18 Best Travel Backpacks, According to Frequent Flyers

By Gabrielle Porcaro

Best travel backpacks for women collage featuring six different backpacks on black and white background.

As someone who frequently travels, I've slung duffels, totes , and travel purses on my arm, but nothing compares to using the best travel backpacks. Depending on the length of your trip, a suitcase can either be too bulky or not big enough, so you'll need the vital second bag to make sure all your clothes, tech, and gear securely arrive at your destination. Plus, traveling with a backpack can be more supportive for your back, freeing up your arms and hands to pull out directions on your phone or to hold an iced coffee. Backpacks can also be surprisingly roomy, so everything you need (or want) on your trip fits as comfortably as possible. The good news is there are a wide range of excellent options to suit any and all of your needs. Below, we found the most travel-friendly options and tapped Glamour editors and some of our frequent-flier friends to share the best travel backpacks.

What to look for in a travel backpack

When shopping for luggage items like a travel backpack, the comfort and capacity of the bag is key. You want it to feel easy on the body, which means wide straps or a hip belt to distribute weight, which comes in handy if you're running to catch a plane or carrying it through a crowded subway. Bonus points if the straps are they adjustable and padded. Consider the material: Is it lightweight, soft, and made of durable material like water-resistant fabric? As for size, think about the use of the backpack. There are weekender bags and carry-on size options you can use for long weekends or smartly packed weeklong vacations and styles for short day trips, hikes, or shopping excursions.

The neoprene material is strong, soft, and stretchy, which causes the bag to flex to your body and whatever you put inside. It's forgiving, allowing you to fit in and possibly overstuff everything you need for a trip. It always shocks me how much I can fit/shove into the main compartment yet still slide my laptop out of the back sleeve. No matter if it’s filled with a hoodie and various pouches holding makeup, power cords, and snacks; it's easy to access. Best for City Travel : PAK Large Nylon Backpack

PAK Large Nylon Backpack

PAK Large Nylon Backpack

“As a backpack I recently added to my collection, I was impressed by how many features were hidden in what seemed like a pretty basic bag. First, it’s worth noting how seamlessly this slid on and off my back, making it a breeze to sit on the subway or grab my wallet to buy coffee. At first glance, I was confused about the zipper on the bottom of the front pocket, but when I realized it was a coat sling, which, as someone who runs cold and always has an extra layer, is something I will use again and again. Another made-for-me feature is an extra large pocket for water bottles since it’s a personal pet peeve when they aren’t wide enough for standard sizes. Having only worn this around the city for daily life, I appreciate that the shape and look of the pack are city-ready and more polished. When I take this on international trips, I look forward to using the hidden theft-proof compartments,” says Porcaro.

Capacity: 13.5”L x 7” W x 14” H / Waterproof : No

  • Pros: Easy access pocket in the back, Coat sling, Large side pockets

Capacity : 26 L / Waterproof : Water Repellent

  • Pros : Customizable; 100-day trial period; soft material; luggage sleeve

I've Been Living Out of This Backpack For a Year, So You Can Trust When I Say It's Good

lululemon wunderlust backpack review

Backpacks endure a lot in their lifetime — getting dragged through trips, streets, trails, and gym locker rooms and crammed with way too much (sometimes wet, dirty, or stinky) stuff. And considering I've been living out of a carry-on suitcase and backpack for about two years now, I cannot understate the pressure that my backpack is under. My backpack is my bathroom medicine cabinet, my briefcase, my entertainment center, and my bookshelf. It's also my hiking backpack, my gym bag, my personal item , and my lunch bag. This thing has got to do it all — a seemingly impossible task for one bag.

Yet, somehow, I've found one that can take on the task: the Lululemon Wunderlust Backpack ($158).

Main Image

I've had this Lululemon backpack for a little over a year now, and so far, it's been through 13 countries, more than 30 flights, and hikes in every type of weather, from the Arctic Circle in Norway to the "End of the World" in Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina. I've packed and unpacked it too many times to count.

So trust me when I say this backpack is the one. It can stand up to long hikes but also looks polished enough to take to the office. It can fit a hell of a lot of stuff yet still fits under an airplane seat (even when filled to the max). Its classic design means my husband doesn't mind carrying it for a while on long hikes (as you can see in the photos below). And even more importantly: it has a magnificent array of pockets.

If you are an avid traveler, have a lot of active hobbies, or just like a good backpack, keep reading for my take on why the Lululemon Wunderlust Backpack is simply the best.

What I Like About the Lululemon Wunderlust Backpack

Most travel backpacks fall into one of a couple of categories: the super-intense nomad backpacks that look like a veritable turtle shell, cutesy carry-ons that don't fit much and suffice for vacationers only, or super-crunchy outdoor-adventure backpacks that can stand up to multiday backpacking trips. I need something in between, and this backpack fits the bill.

At 25 liters of volume, it can fit a LOT of stuff. For reference, my typical backpack load includes two books, a small notebook, a laptop, a bag of chargers, a case of toiletries, a pouch of miscellaneous personal-care items, a water bottle, an extra jacket, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, and a spare wallet. And because the main compartment closes with a drawstring, you can really push the limits of the amount of stuff you can cram in. For instance, if the gate attendants are being strict about the "two items only" rule, I can still fit my little crossbody purse inside my backpack in a pinch. Because of the drawstring and the adjustable buckles, it can also adjust to smaller loads — so if you're packing light for a day trip, you can physically downsize it versus carry around a big empty shell of a bag.

The trolley-compatible sleeve in the back is beyond helpful for slipping onto the handle of my carry-on so I have the option of either carrying it on my back or rolling it around (a must have for a travel backpack, IMO). And there's a padded zipper laptop pocket that you can access from the side — not through the main compartment. Take it from someone who treats TSA like a competition: this is huge if you are trying to be fast in the security line and don't want to rearrange your whole backpack to take out your laptop. Because it's padded and water repellant, I've also never worried about something happening to my computer while it's inside.

lululemon wunderlust backpack review: on suitcase

While it's not designed to be a hiking backpack first and foremost, the Lululemon Wunderlust Backpack has a lot of the features you need to hit the trail, like a padded back panel and straps, two easy-access water-bottle pockets, and water-repellant fabric. I have thoroughly tested that last feature: after getting caught in a surprise downpour while on top of a mountain in Brasov, Romania, I was soaked — but everything inside my backpack was perfectly dry. After that, I've never been nervous about getting caught in bad weather with this thing on, and it protects my stuff every time. I've comfortably worn this in all-weather hikes, from rain and snow to sweltering heat, and it's held up through it all (and has yet to smell, either).

An unexpectedly useful feature on this backpack are the tiny pockets on the outsides of the water-bottle sleeves. They don't fit much, but they're the perfect size to fit a phone charger for easy access or even to store trash when you're on a hike (remember: leave no trace!).

As for the other pockets, there's a small one inside the back of the main compartment that's perfect for stashing a few extra cards or some cash. (In case you haven't heard this yet: always split up your sources of money, so if you lose your wallet or purse, you don't lose everything . I learned this one the hard way.) There's another small pocket on the top of the backpack that's the perfect size for things like hand sanitizer or keys, and I've found it to be a great spot for sunglasses since they get crushed and will be easy to access when you arrive to your destination. Finally, there's a front envelope-like pocket with a snap closure that's perfect for thinner items like a notebook, passport, or book or even for keeping dirty laundry or a wet swimsuit separate from everything else (speaking from experience).

And despite how heavy I pack this thing (I can't even tell you how many cab drivers, hotel porters, family members, and friends have commented), this backpack shows no sign of tearing on any of the zippers, seams, or straps.

What's Worth Noting About the Lululemon Wunderlust Backpack

One of the only drawbacks I've found in my extensive use of this backpack is that the water-bottle sleeves are quite small. A 16-oz. Corkcicle bottle or Swell bottle will fit inside, but my other favorite water bottles (such as this giant Yeti or popular Hydroflask ) don't.

I also chose the Raw Linen colorway, even though I knew it would get dirty. And it has, though not nearly as much as you might expect from all the travel and outdoor adventuring I've done with it. And that's truly lucky, because this thing is spot-clean only (another drawback).

Who the Lululemon Wunderlust Backpack Is Best For

While my personal needs are quite unique, I think this Lululemon backpack makes the perfect all-in-one backpack for anyone who likes to be active when they travel — someone who might need a backpack for a hike or day outside or even to hit the gym but doesn't want a backpack that screams "crunchy." You could equally use this backpack for day-to-day running around, especially if you need to change outfits a few times or bring a laptop or tablet with you.

Additional Details

  • Color options: Nomad (a camel-ish color), True Navy, Black, and Raw Linen (the one I have).
  • Dimensions: 14.2" x 6.1" x 20.1"
  • Laptop pocket: Fits up to a 16" laptop. I can fit my 13-inch laptop inside with a thin sleeve case on it.

12 Amazing Lululemon Travel Accessories and Essentials For Women That Are Worth The Investment (2024)

best lululemon travel backpack

Updated March 2024

best lululemon travel backpack

Love Crewneck T-Shirt

The Love Crewneck t-shirt from Lululemon has to be one of the best Lululemon travel accessories that I own to date. They’re simple basics made with high quality material and…

  • Designed to be on the go, perfect for travel.
  • Odor-neutral, and sweat-wicking, ideal when you’re traveling through different climates.
  • Classic cut and available in various colors, awesome for versatility, and goes perfect with your capsule wardrobe, whatever it may be!

Are you wondering which Lululemon travel accessories and essentials are actually worth the investment?

Nowadays, there are so many brands that have many options for travelers in terms of clothes and accessories, but where do you start?

At the beginning of my travels, I searched for quality travel essentials for women from clothing to accessories to make my travels simpler and easier.

Searching through different brands, looking through Pinterest and Instagram to find travel outfit inspiration and airport outfit inspiration just to find not only an outfit to get inspired from, but a brand to explore further and see what else I could find to make my travels more comfortable, chic, minimal, and quality.

It wasn’t until I finally decided to bite the bullet and invest in my first Lululemon piece which was their On The Fly pant, which after purchasing and trying on at home, I felt like I could live in!

I love to get inspiration from others on how to look effortlessly chic, and put together the perfect Lululemon travel outfit, without sacrificing comfort and flexibility while traveling.

So in today’s post, I want to share with you some of my favorite travel essentials for women from Lululemon specifically that in my opinion, make the cut for travelers to make the journey smoother, comfortable, while not sacrificing style.

What's Inside This Post:

The Best Travel Essentials For Women From Lululemon – The Best Lululemon Must Haves 2024

Best lululemon travel essential 1: softstreme high-rise pant regular.

best lululemon travel backpack

While leggings have usually been the preferred bottom piece to wear on long-haul flights, they are not the most comfortable or even the healthiest, according to flight experts.

For long-haul flights or even short trips, a bottom piece that is both comfortable, soft, and stretchy is ideal, and for that, the softstreme high-rise pants from Lululemon are the ideal pair to wear.

These pants are comfortable, stylish, and minimalist-looking as they come in a variety of neutral colors and, of course, are quality-made like many other Lululemon products.

Made with a quick-drying material, great stretch, and a soft exterior with a peach fuzz interior, these pants are not only cozy but also very in style, as they drape nicely through the leg.

They are sweat-wicking and designed to be comfortable both in constant movement and sitting down in an 8+ hour flight. They come in different lengths, from short, tall, and regular.

Best lululemon travel essentials 2: swift mid-rise wide-leg pant.

best lululemon travel backpack

If you’re looking for a pant that is both stylish, functional, and lightweight for those warmer destinations, these swift mid-rise wide leg pants are the ones!

Created for warmer climates, the materials of these pants are both sweat-wicking and lightweight, and the looser fit is designed to allow the breeze to keep you cool. Not to mention, the pants are very stylish with the wide leg fit.

The length is designed to puddle at the towards your shoes, but in case they are too long, Lululemon does offer free alterations with their products at all stores, no matter where you are. I’ve gotten my pants hemmed with them, and they’ve always been professional, and quick.

A bonus thing I love about these pants that not many of their pants have is the zippered pockets, which is really nice especially to keep any important items safer, from keys, to airpods, a phone, and more.

Coming in various colors, mostly neutrals, these pants are sure to fit into any capsule wardrobe you’re planning on packing.

best lululemon travel backpack

Here are a few reasons why I love the jackets at Lululemon for travel:

  • They are lightweight and therefore easy to travel with and put in your suitcase or bag
  • They are quality-made
  • They are made with breathable materials
  • They are stylish

When I studied abroad in Greece, I brought along the Lululemon Run Bandit Reflective Jacket which was perfect for 3 months of travel throughout Greece – from sunny and warm climates in the islands to the chillier weather in northern Greece.

Unfortunately, they don’t have that same jacket anymore, however, a great alternative to this essential travel product is the Always Effortless Jacket.

This Lululemon travel jacket is lightweight enough to wear on a day that starts out chilly and progressively gets warmer (you know what I am talking about!) or when you know you need a jacket to take with you, but you don’t want something bulky – this is the one! It’s a great alternative to the Run Bandit Reflective jacket I have and enjoy using.

The Always Effortless Jacket is water-repellent, meaning that the material is designed to withstand rainy conditions without trespassing onto you, which is key to know!

With so many terms used to describe outerwear, like water-proof, water-resistant and water-repellent, it’s so important to be aware of what they all mean so you can purchase the best outerwear like a rain jacket or winter coat for frigid temperatures!

Many people love the length of the jacket because it’s easy to pack, and it’s lightweight for a rain jacket. To read about all the reasons why people rave about this jacket click here ! .

Best lululemon accessories for travel 4: the everywhere belt bag 1l.

black everywhere belt bag with phone hand sanitizer and wallet

This belt bag is a perfect everyday travel bag that you can take with you from a hike to a walk around the city.

Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or a long flight, this essential really makes looking over your important items so much easier.

The reason why I personally love the everywhere belt bag is the fact that it’s small in size, but fits all your essentials, and more!

From your phone to your wallet, hand sanitizer, and so much more! This Lululemon travel bag makes travel easy and honestly so stylish with its many vibrant colors and neutral tones like the one I have.

I have the black color, but honestly, there are many different colors to choose from, that you will find one that matches your style and use. It’s one of my favorite accessories from Lululemon for travel that I think women in travel would really appreciate.

best lululemon travel backpack

A trench-esque jacket is one of those pieces that will both cover you from light rain and offer versatility when it comes to not sacrificing style and your capsule wardrobe.

Lululemon’s Lightweight Oversized Coach Jacket is perfect simply because it’s designed for movement, rain, and looking good no matter the weather.

Especially if you’re traveling to a cooler destination and you don’t want to necessarily wear a rain jacket, this oversized jacket is the perfect look for you!

This product features a water-repellent material, an oversized fit, and an adjustable hem to secure a tighter fit. The jacket also has zippered pockets and interior zippered pockets, perfect for storing your valuables safely as you travel. It’s basically designed for traveling stylishly!

Chic, stylish without much effort, and something that makes you look put together again without thinking too much about it is the ideal travel essential to pack in your suitcase!

girl wearing Lululemon black t-shirt in Seattle, Washington with leather jacket and gray pants

The love crew t-shirt is one of my favorite products from Lululemon that I have simply because of the quality of these otherwise basic-looking t-shirts.

I’ve done my research, and I’ve purchased other basic t-shirts in the past, but none of them ever either retained their colors, the neckline would lose its shape, or the quality just felt cheap to the touch.

The quality that stands out with these Love crew t-shirts is amazing , they stretch and move with your body, without being super tight or super loose on you, they retain their color, and they are super breathable and do not retain odor – which yes, is very important.

Lululemon Athletica makes great sportswear that is actually designed for sweat, wear and tear, and movement, so rest assured that when you’re traveling through all sorts of climates, carrying all sorts of bags, you will feel fresh, and dry in one of these travel essentials for women from Lululemon.

best lululemon travel backpack

Something I love about Lululemon are their designs that are not only trendy and cute, but also made to be functional, sweat-wicking, and extremely good quality to last you throughout your travels, no matter where you go.

That exactly the case for the side-cinch ribbed cardigan , that is made of a soft, ribbed texture, with good stretch, while holding it’s shape, and plus, it’s quick drying.

This lightweight cardigan is the perfect Lululemon travel essential as it can either be worn over a plain t-shirt (like the lovecrew t-shirt) for an added layer of warmth for those in-between weather days, or simply be put on with jeans, shorts, or paired with the Lululemon straight leg pant.

It hits around the waist, so it’s not too cropped, but it’s also not awkwardly long, which is perfect to wear especially with high or mid-rise pants and trousers. Plus with the cinch feature on the sides, you’ll be able to customize the fit even more if you’re looking for a fit or relaxed looked, no matter where you’re going, or what the temperature may be like.

Best lululemon travel essential 8: scuba oversized half-zip hoodie.

girl wearing navy blue Lululemon half zip up cropped sweater

This travel essential is cute, quality, and stylish, but also does the job of keeping you warm while on long flights, sightseeing, and being used as a layering piece, or to go running and keeping active while on your travels.

The Scuba Oversized Half-Zip Hoodie makes for a comfortable travel accessory simply because of its breathable material which makes it perfect to keep up with you as you travel throughout the world.

The hoodie has kangaroo-style big pockets in the front to keep your essentials safe, it’s loose-fitting which means it’s comfortable to wear for long stretches of time on flights and train rides, and it even has an elastic zipper pull that can double as an extra hair tie.

It seems like they really thought of everything with this product, and not to mention, it’s super soft and cozy.

What more would you look for in clothing travel essentials, right?

Best lululemon bags for travel.

When it comes to travel, choosing a bag to accompany you on your journeys, from the airport to the hiking day trips, or a day museum hopping is so important and can influence your travel experience from smooth and pleasant, to difficult and messy.

Let’s go through some of the best Lululemon bags for travel so you can pick which one will match your travel style, functions and purpose, and actual personal style.

Best Lululemon Must Have 9: Wunderlust Backpack 25L

best lululemon travel backpack

Whether you’re looking for a day pack or the perfect carry-on to accompany you on your travels, you need something that is roomy and will fit your items, without being huge.

The Lululemon Wanderlust backpack 25L is the perfect travel backpack, made with movement, adventure, and organization in mind.

Made with water-repellent materials, plenty of interior compartments, including a 16″ laptop compartment, zippered pockets, side pockets, and even a strap in case you want to strap a jacket on it if it gets too hot, or even a yoga mat if you’re traveling with one.

As the name says, it’s a 25 liters size, which for reference, a typical Jansport School backpack is around 26 liters.

What I also love about it is that it’s also trolley compatible, so you can slip the sleeve through the suitcase handle and roll around instead of carrying it on your back.

Lastly, I really love this Lululemon bag for travel because it’s not flashy whatsoever. There are no big logos, and instead, it’s subtle, practical, and to the point.

best lululemon travel backpack

I can’t mention a list of the best Lululemon bags for travel without mentioning the Packable Backpack 32L, which is designed specifically for those who want an extra, small backpack in their suitcase without carrying it.

Packable, yet still with a large capacity at 32 liters, the backpack is rather slim and has a flat structure, that you can do a lot with, and doesn’t cost you much room in your limited space.

The backpack itself measures 12.4″ x 6.7″ x 24″ and has one main storage compartment with zipper. it does have an exterior water bottle holder, and even has a trolley strap.

The small backpack comes in 2 colors, and the material is water-repellent.

If you’re looking for a practical, chic, extra backpack for those day trips, this is the one.

Best lululemon travel must have 11: packable tote bag 32l.

best lululemon travel backpack

For those of you looking for a tote bag to throw in your suitcase for an overnight bag somewhere, to pack snacks for a picnic at the park, or to use as an extra bag to stash away items that don’t fit in your suitcase on your way back home (we’ve all been there!) look into the Packable Tote Bag 32L .

Measuring 18″ x 6.5″ x 15.3″ and available in 2 colors, this large tote bag offers great space in its organized compartments while keeping things light with the lightweight, water-repellent material.

The bag comes with 2 handles to carry it on your forearm or with a longer strap on your shoulder or crossbody. What I love about this bag, in addition to all the other things, is that it is packable. You can take this bag folded up in your suitcase and unfold it to use it when you’re on your way back to hold extra things.

It also has a trolley strap, making it perfect for bringing on as a personal item with your carry-on or checked-in bag.

Want a cross-body bag that fits more than what it looks like on the outside? You can’t go wrong with the Lululemon City Adventurer Crossbody Bag , which has 2 pockets to put your things in (the main one and a second one on the outside), isn’t flashy, and it’s chic and cute enough to wear out as you explore a new city, or even going out at night.

The fabric features a water-repellent material, which is great because you already know how likely accidents can happen, like spilling a drink on your bag when you have it on or dropping food on it.

You can rest assured that you can easily wipe off any dirt, spills, or grime on it, which adds to its practicalness of it.

The bag measure 9.3″ x 1.2″ x 6.9″, and has an additional pocket on the inside of the main pocket. The strap is also adjustable, which is great for personal customization.

Travel can definitely be a sport at times.

It’s not always picture-perfect flowy dresses, and luxurious first-class space to stretch your legs and get the comfort of sleeping horizontally.

It can be, but sometimes it’s cramped seating on a plane for 8 hours, or it’s rushing through a humid airport trying to get to your gate in a panic or sleeping in the airport.

Finding clothing that can move with you, make you feel comfortable, is breathable, and that is also stylish quality, and practical is something to consider. Especially if you’re a frequent traveler.

The best overall travel backpack needs to be sturdy, stylish, and reliable. Our pick for the best overall travel backpack is the adidas Iconic 3-Stripe Backpack. This compact bag features the classic adidas three-stripe design, which arches over the top of the bag. It comes in five modern colors. Some backpacks can look childish, but this backpack is sporty and minimalist. With two large pockets on the front for storing your phone or other miscellaneous items, a built-in laptop sleeve, and a detachable storage pocket for the straps, this has plenty of functionality for your next trip. The padded shoulder straps keep the bag from digging in even when it's packed full. We love the water bottle pocket and the athleisure look of this bag. It is on the small side, but that compactness makes it perfect for stowing under an airplane seat as a personal item on your next flight. Wherever you're going, the adidas Iconic 3-Stripe Backpack will help you get there in style.

The Lululemon Wunderlust 25L backpack is our choice for the best travel backpack for women. This stylish bag is versatile enough to work as a gym bag, a work bag, or an understated, sleek travel bag for your next flight. It has two side pockets for water bottles and a bucket-style drawstring and flap closure. Its built-in laptop sleeve can accommodate laptops up to 16 inches. It also includes an outer elastic strap, which can stretch to carry a pair of shoes, a jacket, or other small items. Best Travel Backpack for Men - Reebok Training Weave Backpack

Reebok Training Weave Backpack

  • Material: Polyester
  • Capacity: 39.75L

If you like the look of the Lululemon Wunderlust backpack but prefer something slightly more masculine, check out the Reebok Training Weave Backpack. Its most eye-catching feature is the black-on-black polyester webbing that covers the front of the backpack. Some users say they use this webbing to pin badges and buttons on their bag, but it's also a dramatic feature left on its own. The rectangular shape of the bag shows off its customizable sizing, with adjustable straps and buckles to slim down the bag when you need less space. This backpack is built to last, made with durable polyester and large enough to carry nearly 40 liters of gear. We love its mesh pocket for storing shoes or dirty clothes. With its generous size and neutral, sleek design, you'll feel comfortable bringing this bag to the gym or on your next long-haul flight.

Best Backpack for Air Travel - Osprey Arcane Tote Pack

Osprey Arcane Tote Pack

  • Capacity: 20L
  • Weight: 1.76 lbs.
  • Size: 18.11" x 14.96" x 9.06"

If you've ever spent far too long waiting in airport security lines, or waiting to board your train or plane, you know that backaches are one of the most irritating drawbacks of travel. You can't beat the convenience of a backpack, especially on hiking trips, but carrying the weight of your luggage on your back all day is exhausting. That's just one reason why we love the Osprey Arcane Tote Pack. This backpack is a beautiful marriage of a tote bag and backpack. You can wear it on your back, on one shoulder, or rest it on top of your rolling suitcase. The top of the bag is extra secure, with a zip top that folds down and clips to the body of the pack. This is a superior feature for any bag you're planning on stowing as your personal item on the plane—and yes, this bag is compact enough to fit there, too.

The bag comes in a variety of gender neutral colors, from heather gray to dark burgundy. Its padded back and comfortable straps make carrying it a breeze, whether you wear it on your back or as a tote. At 20 liters of capacity, it has enough space for most of your airplane carry-on needs. You can't beat the versatility of a bag with two easy, comfortable methods of styling. While we wish this bag came with water bottle pockets, you can't have everything.

  • Tote and backpack straps
  • Top securely zips and folds down
  • Mesh shoulder pockets
  • Gender neutral style
  • No water bottle pockets

Best Business Travel Backpack - Osprey Transporter Duffel 40

Osprey Transporter Duffel 40

  • Capacity: 40L
  • Weight: 2.5 lbs.
  • Size: 21.65" x 14.57" x 10.24"

For business travel, you'll want something large and sturdy, with a nondescript design you can take from the airport to a business meeting without standing out in a bad way. We recommend the Osprey Transporter Duffel 40. Similar to our previously mentioned tote backpack, the Transporter Duffel is a multi-purpose bag. It can be carried on your back with straps as a backpack or you can carry it by your side like a duffel bag. Unlike some of the other bags we've featured, it has hardened sides, so it can handle getting banged up at the airport or in the overhead compartment. It is a better option for transporting fragile work gear such as cameras for this reason; the hard sides offer an extra layer of protection against impact. With a 40 liter capacity, it's large enough to carry clothes for a work trip and the duffle-style opening gives easy access for packing. It's also conveniently weather resistant and comes in a wide variety of colors. While its hard shape is generally an asset when it comes to protecting your belongings, this bag will not flex to fit under an airplane seat the way a soft fabric or canvas bag would. For this reason, we recommend planning to check it or store it in the overhead compartment. Still, features like durability and functionality make this a desirable travel bag for business people of all professions.

  • Hardened sides to protect contents
  • Backpack-duffel bag combo
  • Large capacity
  • Weather resistant
  • Relatively heavy
  • Rigid; won't flex to fit in smaller spaces

Osprey Arcane Duffel Pack

  • Capacity: 30L
  • Weight: 1.89 lbs.
  • Size: 18.5" x 12.2" x 10.63"

If you like the look of the Transporter Duffel but prefer something lighter and more professional-looking, we suggest the Osprey Arcane Duffel Pack. Another dual-function bag, the Arcane Duffel switches easily between backpack and duffel modes. We love how nondescript the style is—it comes in plain black, blue, or green, paired with sleek zipper designs and functional pockets. You could carry this bag into a business meeting and no one would bat an eye. The recycled materials are a plus for the environmentally conscious and its built-in laptop sleeve adds to its functionality for traveling professionals. The Arcane includes a security hook to keep your belongings safe while traveling in unfamiliar areas. It may not have the same capacity as the Transporter duffel, but its softer profile and lowkey design make it a great option for many travelers.

  • Shoulder and backpack carry styles
  • Laptop sleeve
  • Security hook
  • Made with recycled materials
  • Professional style
  • Limited capacity
  • Duffel pocket placement could use adjustments

Best Carry-On Travel Backpack - Lululemon LiftOS Hiking Backpack

Lululemon LiftOS Hiking Backpack

  • Material: Recycled nylon and polyester, polyurethane
  • Size: 13.8" x 8" x 21"

If you're looking for a backpack to use as your carry-on for air travel, look no further than the Lululemon LiftOS Hiking Backpack. This sleek, unisex beauty is functional, organized, and versatile. Lululemon created it as a hiking backpack, so you can be sure it will be durable enough to stand up to being tossed around in the airport. The polyurethane bag body keeps moisture out and the multiple compartments keep your belongings secure and organized. There are many ways to store your clothes and other necessities within this backpack. We especially like the shoe compartment at the base of the bag.

Another bonus is the support features. In addition to a removable chest strap, the LiftOS Hiking Backpack has added back support to evenly distribute the weight of its contents and to protect the most vulnerable areas of your spine. Due to its height, it may not work as well for petite people. Its all-black exterior will quickly absorb heat in the summertime, as well. But as a carry-on item for air travel, it's tough to beat this rugged, versatile backpack.

  • Designed to evenly distribute weight across your back
  • Backpack provides lumbar spine support
  • Chest strap option
  • Pocket for hydration bladder
  • Water repellant
  • Adjustable internal dividers
  • May not fit petite frames well

Best Large Travel Backpack - Osprey Travel Pack 70L

Osprey Travel Pack 70L

  • Capacity: 70L
  • Weight: 5.413 lbs. (men's), 4.5 lbs. (women's)
  • Size: 25.59" x 14.96" x 12.6"

If you want to travel for months out of a single backpack, you're going to need something large. We highly recommend the Osprey Travel Pack. It has a massive capacity of 70 liters. Osprey sells two variations of this bag—the Farpoint bag for men and the Fairview bag for women. The two are nearly identical, the key difference being the support system for weight distribution. In their design, Osprey was mindful of the different physical statures and ratios between men and women and customized these backpacks to suit the needs of each. This bag manages to offer a ton of storage space without being overwhelming. It's relatively lightweight and the removable daypack allows users to take day trips or customize the weight distribution to make their luggage easier to carry.

The daypack is a great backpack in its own right, with plenty of space and mesh water bottle pockets on either side. Users say this combo is unbeatable for traveling. You can even separate the two packs and use one as your carry on and one as your personal item. However you choose to pack it, this bag is both large and comfortable, and it's versatile enough to carry with you all over the world.

  • Detachable daypack for shorter trips
  • Huge capacity without excessive weight
  • Men- and women-specific designs for more comfortable fit
  • Lockable zippers
  • Daypack has water bottle pockets
  • Not great for hiking or backpacking

  • Size: 15.75" x 10.24" x 7.48"

Travel gear can be quite expensive, especially for objects that may get dirty, torn, stolen, or lost as a result of your travels. It's understandable if you want to start with something more affordable, especially if you're a new traveler. Our pick for the best budget travel backpack is the Osprey Remnants Packable Daypack. As the name suggests, this travel backpack collapses down to fit inside one of its internal pockets. It's made almost entirely with ripstop nylon, making it incredibly lightweight—under one pound—and easily foldable to fit in a suitcase, duffel, or purse. Its capacity is limited to just 15 liters, but if you're just venturing out on a day trip or looking for a small, light bag to serve as your personal item on the plane, this will do just fine. Being collapsable, it doesn't have the best back support or most padded shoulder straps. But considering the other advantages in cost, size, weight, and practical application, we think it's well worth the small investment to get your hands on one of these backpacks for your next trip.

  • Super affordable
  • Compact, collapsible, and lightweight
  • Minimalist design
  • Water bottle pockets
  • No chest strap, limited padding
  • Not the best for carrying heavy or large loads

What to Look For in a Travel Backpack

The material of a backpack greatly affects its durability and performance, so it's worth taking note of this factor when shopping. Most backpacks rely on sturdy, water-resistant synthetic fibers such as nylon or rip-stop polyester. Others may use plant fibers such as cotton, hemp, or linen for a more rustic look and less environmental impact.

It's also a good idea to consider the materials that the hardware is made from: Plastic is common, but metal is far sturdier in the long term.

Capacity is the volume a backpack can store. Travel backpacks vary from compact to large enough to live out of for several weeks. Keep in mind that when filled to capacity, these backpacks will weigh more and take up significantly more space.

Lighter backpacks are more practical for trips where you plan to spend a great deal of time on your feet, hauling your luggage on your backpack. The ideal backpack is lightweight without sacrificing on the quality of materials. A lightweight backpack won't do you much good if it breaks or tears while you're in the middle of a trip.

Many of the best travel backpacks can adjust their size depending on how full you pack them. If you plan to take your travel backpack as your personal item, carry-on, or checked bag for a flight, make sure its packed dimensions don't exceed the size limits for your airline.

FAQs About Travel Backpacks

Can a 40l backpack be a personal item.

A personal item is a small bag or purse that an airline allows you to carry on a plane and stow under the seat in front of you. It is not the same as a carry-on, which is a piece of luggage that is generally stowed in a compartment above the seating area on a plane. Carry-on luggage usually allows for larger pieces than personal items. Since you'll have to fit your personal item under the seat in front of you, a 40-liter backpack is probably too large to qualify, unless you don't fill it all the way. The exact maximum dimensions for your personal item will depend on your airline.

Can I carry a backpack and a carry-on?

Exact rules vary based on the airline you're flying with, but generally speaking, you will be able to fly with both a backpack and a carry-on item. In this case your backpack would be your personal item, which means it must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. If you're carrying a larger backpack, consider using that as your carry-on and checking your other bag. You don't want to have your bag unexpectedly checked and potentially need to pay extra fees.

What size backpack can fit under a plane seat?

Again, this depends on the airline. If you want your backpack to be your personal item, try to keep your choices limited to bags that don't exceed 16 by 12 by 6 inches. If you fill your bag less full and therefore can compact your bag to better fit that size, that works too.

Is it better to travel with a backpack or a suitcase?

The best luggage type simply depends on personal preference. A backpack may be preferable if you plan to go hiking, camping, or otherwise plan to spend a significant time outdoors. It may also be a good idea if you're visiting a city with rough, uneven, or unpaved roads. Wheeled suitcases don't do much good in these circumstances.

However, backpacks can be troublesome for those with back pain. A rolled suitcase certainly requires less physical effort to haul around, provided you're in the right environment. The better bag to travel with is the one that best fits your travel plans and needs.

Skip the stress of checking in a bag or lugging a traditional carry-on suitcase around an airport by adding a carry-on backpack to your travel gear. Practical, functional, and hassle-free, a carry-on backpack can fit up to a week’s worth of clothes, depending on your wardrobe and packing prowess. Whether you’re backpacking through Europe or embarking on a weekend getaway, this style helps make your trip as efficient and enjoyable as possible.

We tested dozens of carry-on backpacks and evaluated them based on traits like capacity, comfort, durability, and design. First, we tested the backpacks in our New York City lab and utilized our airplane set complete with row of real plane seats and overhead storage bins. We then took them out into the world for six months to further test each bag on a variety of trips. From rugged to sleek styles, we tested plenty of carry-on backpacks ranging in design and size that impressed us.

Best Overall

Cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5

The backpack has an unstructured style that makes it easy to pack clothing and accessories, plus a plethora of thoughtful features catered to frequent travelers.

There isn’t a designated water bottle holder.

Salt Lake City-based outdoor gear brand Cotopaxi builds brightly colored clothing and accessories to last. The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack earned our top pick as the best carry-on backpack with its perfect performance in all categories of our testing. We loved its high capacity and thought the unstructured style was ideal for wedging clothes into every corner, maximizing packing space in the clamshell-style compartments. The shell is made of a TPU-coated 1000D polyester with a rubbery feel, and although it feels resistant to liquids, the backpack comes with a rain cover to ensure that your belongings stay dry while traveling. Handles on all four sides of the backpack make it easy to carry and lift into an overhead bin from any angle. The only downside to the bag is that it doesn't have a water bottle holder on the sides, so you'll have to carry one or try to fit it in the top pocket in the front.

We think this durable Cotopaxi bag will remain in excellent condition no matter how many times it hits the road, as it was not damaged at all after we repeatedly tossed it onto the ground. The rubber texture also seemed easy to clean and resistant to liquid spills. After six months of regularly using the bag, we found that it's the perfect size for long weekend trips and helps keep all of our items organized and easy to access. Both stylish and functional, this backpack can even be made one-of-a-kind by choosing the surprise colors option when purchased through Cotopaxi’s website.

Best Convertible

Away the outdoor convertible backpack 45l.

  • Design 4.5 /5

We love how comfortable it is on your shoulders and back thanks to the soft materials and cushioned shoulder straps.

At nearly 22 inches tall, this pack may be too long for those with shorter torsos.

You'll be surprised by just how spacious this backpack is. The main compartment opens up like a clam shell for easy access to items that allowed us to fit an entire four-day packing list with ease — plus a few extra items. There are multiple large compartments, compression straps, and a few pockets in this backpack that are ideal for organizing clothes, gear, and accessories. While the 45-liter backpack can grow heavy when completely filled, the padded shoulder straps are supportive and keep you comfortable when walking for long periods of time. Plus, the convenient duffel handles allow you to switch up your carrying style if you do grow fatigued.

This backpack also sports a well-padded laptop sleeve that protected our testing laptop when we threw the fully packed bag off a counter three times. There was also no sign of rips, scuffs, or tears in the bag's fabric after our tests. This water- and abrasion-resistant backpack would be perfect for avid travels who are looking for a sleek backpack to take them from city explorations to camping adventures.

Best Budget

Asenlin 40l travel backpack.

It’s spacious and comes with three packing cubes to stay organized while traveling.

After six months of use, the bag is scuffed up with noticeable scratches.

Perfect for travelers on a budget, the Asenlin 40L Travel Backpack impressed us with its packing features and comfortable fit. We thought the bag provided excellent organization thanks to the interior and exterior compression that provided extra room for packing. The backpack comes with three different packing cubes in small, medium, and large. We also like that this backpack includes both a suitcase strap and a handle to hold it horizontally. The backpack itself also features straps inside and a laptop sleeve to easily hold down items and pack electronics.

The design didn’t blow us away like those from some of the more costly brands, but it does have a laptop sleeve and a water bottle holder. We also liked the flexibility of being able to wear the Asenlin as a backpack, hold it like a briefcase, or use the trolley sleeve to slide it onto a roller suitcase’s handle. However, a bigger adjustment range for the chest strap would have been ideal. During our durability tests, the backpack didn’t scuff or show signs of damage. We think this budget pick is well worth the low price for those looking to get a durable, comfortable, and spacious carry-on backpack.

Best Traditional

Samsonite silhouette 17 backpack.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

Thanks to its clamshell design, it’s like a suitcase without wheels.

Some of the straps weren’t intuitive to use.

The Samsonite Silhouette 17 Backpack is ideal for travelers who like the structure and sleek, minimalist style of a traditional suitcase but want the portability of a backpack. We love that this bag opens like a suitcase, making it easy to access everything inside. There was plenty of space leftover after packing the backpack, and the classic clamshell opening allowed for easy access to items in the compression-strapped main compartment and the zippered pockets on the inside of the front flap. All of the interior and exterior pockets, including the water bottle holder and padded laptop sleeve, are useful for traveling. You can convert the backpack to wear as a duffel bag or a briefcase, and it has a rear strap to place on a rolling suitcase if desired. The straps were easy to adjust, and it felt like the weight was nicely distributed thanks to the structured style of the backpack. There was a small scuff on the bag after we tossed it on the floor during our durability tests, but the contents of the backpack remained unharmed. When flying with the bag during our six-month testing period, we found that it easily fits in airplane overhead bins and under the seat. Overall, it’s a backpack with the features of a well-compartmentalized suitcase and much more.

Best for Photographers

Peak design travel backpack 45l.

  • Value 4.5 /5

You can access the main compartment on the bag from four different exterior zippers.

This is one of the most expensive backpack on our list.

This 45-liter backpack has a main compartment that is spacious enough to fit clothes for at least four days, and its expansive design is helpful for packing bulky items like jackets and shoes. Placing the clothes and shoes into the bag during testing was efficient and simple thanks to a removable divider sleeve and compression straps to hold everything down securely. Designed with photographers in mind, this backpack functions similarly to a camera bag . It can fit camera cubes, and it has four points of entry to the main compartment, allowing travelers to quickly grab clothes or accessories without unzipping the backpack. There is a padded laptop sleeve and stretchy side pockets for water bottles or a camera tripod.

Peak Design didn’t let any space go to waste on its backpack, so even the hip belt has a small pocket on it for storage and can be packed away when you’re not looking for extra support. It’s also easy to adjust all of the straps to prevent weight imbalances and pinching. Made of weatherproof and water-resistant recycled nylon, the bag held up perfectly after we tossed it on the ground, showing no signs of scuffs or damage — exactly what you want in a durable backpack . Although the price of this bag is steep, it comes with plenty of helpful features for travelers, and the stellar performance leads us to believe that it would last a long time.

Tropicfeel shell backpack.

  • Comfort 4 /5

It can be converted from 40 liters for traveling to 22 liters to use as a daypack.

The handle on the top of the bag wasn’t as comfortable to hold onto as we hoped.

We love this backpack’s thoughtful features geared toward all types of travelers. The Tropicfeel Shell Backpack has the ability to store up to 42 liters worth of clothing for a weekend or week-long trip, but you can also use it as a 20-liter backpack for day trips, sightseeing, and everyday use. After regularly using the bag for six months, we found it to be incredibly sturdy and durable. We had no issues fitting our full packing list and found that there was plenty more room thanks to the variety of buckled straps that allow you to adjust the size of the bag. You can loosen the front buckle to allow the roll-up opening flap to expand to fit more items, and there is a kangaroo pouch at the bottom of the backpack that provides an additional six liters of space for shoes or other items you want to keep separate. There’s also a padded compartment in the back of the backpack that can fit laptops up to 17 inches long. We thought the backpack was comfortable to wear after adjusting the shoulder and waist straps, but we found that it might take some effort to get the buckles into your desired setting.

The Shell Backpack didn’t show any signs of damage throughout testing, and the material is weather-proof. For travelers looking to add upgrades to their backpack, the brand has an organization system and accessory pouches that you can add on for additional fees. If you need an all-in-one backpack, we think this backpack’s versatility makes it well worth the higher cost.

There are tons of pockets and a laptop compartment to help you organize your belongings.

After six months of use, we noticed the bag can feel quite heavy if packed full.

Packing for a trip can often feel tedious, but the Topo Designs Global Travel Bag 30L helps make it easy and efficient. We loved how convenient it is to store a laptop up to 15 inches in the padded compartment in the back of the bag, and there are two front pockets for easy access to a tablet or phone charger. There are a ton of compartments and pockets that offer plenty of options for staying organized with small or loose items in the absence of packing cubes, with places to stash cords, travel documents, electronics, water bottles, and more.

The adjustable shoulder straps and straps that go across the chest and waist help evenly distribute the backpack's weight, making it more comfortable to carry around, although we noticed during our long-term testing that the bag can still feel heavy if you pack it completely full. The 100 percent recycled nylon material felt durable and would likely stay in good condition over time.

The laptop sleeve isn’t padded.

Customized luggage can be hard to come by, but Roam’s The Continental backpack makes it easier than ever to build the carry-on backpack of your dreams. The front, back, sides, and straps of the bag can be red, green, black, or blue, or you can keep the backpack all one color for a monochromatic look. We were a bit worried about the light colors when we first got our hands on this bag, but after four months of traveling, is has no signs of wear and tear, there are no stains or loose threads, and everything is still in good shape. We were also impressed by the exterior pockets to stash headphones, snacks, chargers, water bottles, or anything else you could need whether lounging in the airport or mid-flight. The bag is made with a lightweight, water-repellent fabric and YKK zippers so it easily handles temperamental weather while traveling. Spacious and easy to access, the front flap opens wide so packing the bag with clothes and shoes was a breeze, too. The laptop pocket in the back could easily fit a 17-inch device, but it isn’t padded, so you may want to store your computer in a case to be on the safe side.

The expandable zippers add an extra 3.5 inches of space which increases the capacity to 30 liters.

Some of the pockets feel unnecessary.

The Nomatic Travel Pack is the ultimate versatile carry-on backpack thanks to its expandable zippers that add an extra 10 liters of space. Ideal for an overnight trip or a long weekend getaway, the bag has a variety of pockets and compartments to efficiently organize shoes, clothes, accessories, and technology. While the number of pockets on the interior was a bit overwhelming at first, travelers who like to be extra organized will appreciate the designated padded laptop sleeve, sunglasses case, discrete passport pocket, and plethora of slip and zippered pockets in the main compartment. The handles and padded shoulder straps are comfortable for carrying the bag, and the small-to-medium size of the backpack makes it super comfortable to carry since it doesn’t feel bulky or heavy. We used this bag on a variety of international trips throughout four months of testing, and it still looks new, despite rough handling and being shoved under airplane seats.

Matein Travel Backpack

  • Durability 4.3 /5

It has several compartments for keeping clothing, shoes, tech, and accessories organized.

The materials feel a little lower in quality than other backpacks we tried.

If you’re not ready to invest in a pricier carry-on backpack, you can always dip your toes with this functional and spacious one for under $60. This 40-liter backpack has one large main compartment that can fit several tops, bottoms, and a toiletry case without any issues. We particularly love the separate footwear compartment to prevent the bottom of your shoes from coming into contact with clean clothes and that storage can even fit pairs up to size 12. In addition, there is a laptop pocket and a large front pocket with spots to put items like phone chargers, headphones, and other small accessories that could get lost easily. Compared to the pricier bags we tried, this one feels a bit lower in quality, but none of the nylon fabric tore and scuffed during our durability tests, so we still think this bag has a good lifespan ahead of it.

Best for Hiking

Kühl eskape 25.

The 25-liter capacity makes this backpack versatile for an airplane or the great outdoors.

It takes some adjustments to get it to fit comfortably on the back.

This rugged carry-on backpack from Kühl is the perfect option for travelers embarking on an outdoor adventure. The smaller size of this bag is its greatest strength since it can easily fit enough clothes for a weekend trip, or you can use it as an adventure pack for day hikes or camping trips. There are a variety of thoughtful features for hikers including a stowaway hip belt for extra support while trekking, load-lifting shoulder straps, and the bag is made with durable TPU-laminated nylon. Plus, the chest strap slides up and down the shoulder straps so travelers can get the most comfortable fit for their upper body. We found that it takes some extra effort to adjust all of the straps for the right fit, but once you do, the bag is comfortable to carry for long periods of time. For even more versatility, the bag has a padded laptop pocket and a variety of other small and large zippered pockets to stay organized if you’re commuting or traveling for work.

Tortuga travel backpack.

The bag can feel a bit heavy to carry when it’s fully packed.

If you’re traveling somewhere with a rainy climate, you’ll want a carry-on backpack like this one from Tortuga that can ward off the elements. It’s made with the brand’s 100 percent recycled and waterproof Shell200 or “sailcloth” material to protect your belongings and prevent bad weather from putting a serious damper on your trip. During a rainy overnight camping trip, the Tortuga Travel Backpack essentially sat in a puddle for hours, yet none of our gear or clothing inside got wet at all, and the bag was easy to clean with just a wet cloth.

This is a seriously spacious bag at 40 liters, so we found that you can seamlessly fit a week’s worth of clothing (or more) between the two clamshell compartments. Because of the split style of the bag, packing it up is hassle-free since it’s easy to see exactly how much space is left on each side. And if you run out of space in the main compartments, there are top, front, and side exterior pockets to store a laptop, accessories, water bottles, and more items that you’ll want to have handy while traveling.

Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack

This lightweight backpack has a sleek and contemporary design that comes in several earthy colors.

It has a smaller capacity than many backpacks and can only fit a day or two of clothes.

If you’re looking to travel in style, Everlane’s The ReNew Transit Backpack is the perfect fit. Functional and contemporary, we found it to be best suited for weekend trips because of its smaller capacity. The bag fit all of the packing items during testing, but it would be difficult to fit much more in the main compartment. The ReNew Transit was comfortable to wear thanks to its lightweight polyester material and compact build. The front flap of the backpack has an external pocket for smaller items, and it folds over to attach magnetically to the front of the backpack. During our durability tests, the front magnets stayed securely together, and the body of the backpack didn’t get crushed or damaged. We liked how it can fit under an airplane seat, making it a versatile backpack for traveling with or without other pieces of luggage. There is a laptop sleeve in the back of the bag as well as a water bottle holder on the side and a front zippered pocket below the folding magnetic lock. With four earthy tones to choose from, this is a bag to fit all travel style preferences.

Best for Foot Travel

Osprey fairview 40.

The compartments and various straps made packing effortless.

It’s a large bag, but it wasn’t so heavy that it was uncomfortable to wear.

For travelers journeying on foot, the Osprey Fairview wowed us with its spacious interior and comfortable fit. The straps for walking longer distances are really the best part — making your bag feel like you're carrying less since the weight is so well distributed. The bags have the same storage capacity and general style, but Osprey’s women’s backpacks are designed to fit a smaller torso with waist and chest harnesses that sit upward and outward for a more comfortable carry. In testing, the main compartment and mesh zippered pouch on the front flap proved to be spacious. There are two internal compression straps and one external strap that kept belongings secure through our rough handling, so we think the bag would provide sufficient protection if you do need to check it in for a flight.

We appreciated the padded shoulder straps and back that made wearing the backpack comfortable, despite the weight of its contents. The Osprey Fairview bags have an internal suspension the brand calls “LightWire” that distributes the weight from the harness to the hip belt, and our shoulders didn’t hurt after carrying the backpack since most of the weight shifted to the lower body.

Other Carry-on Backpacks We Liked

While we tested plenty of high-scoring carry-on backpacks, there were some that almost made our list but didn’t quite make the cut due to several weaknesses revealed during testing.

Bellroy Transit Backpack Plus : We loved the adjustable sternum and waist straps that you can tuck into the bag when not in use, but we think there are better bags out there for a fraction of the price.

AmazonBasics Carry-on Travel Backpack : It had plenty of compartments for staying organized and the material felt durable, but there weren’t any standout features that made it a must-have backpack.

Vancropak Carry-on Backpack, Extra Large 40L : This backpack fits all of the packing items, and it even fits under an airplane seat, but our budget pick performed slightly better and it costs less.

On two separate occasions, we tested carry-on backpacks in our New York City lab to make sure we were creating this list with the best options from trusted luggage brands. For our latest tests, we built a specially designed airplane set that includes a row of real airplane seats and an overhead storage bin. To date, we've put over 34 carry-on backpacks through a series of trials that compared capacity, design, comfort, durability, and overall value. After completing our in-house testing, we sent the backpacks out with our Travel + Leisure editors to give us insight on how they fared during real-world travel. We have been updating this article with long-term testing insights as soon as they become available.

To test for capacity, we began by packing the bags with three shirts, two pairs of pants, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a toiletry bag. We noted if any space was leftover as well as how functional the compartments were for organizing the contents packed. We evaluated the overall design of the bags by paying attention to how they fold out, how well the zippers and buckles work, and the functionality of each pocket or compartment.

Next, we put on the backpacks and walked around for 10 minutes to rate comfortability. The highest scoring backpacks were exceptionally enjoyable to wear with the weight evenly distributed on the shoulders or hips.

Then, we threw the backpacks a few feet or off a countertop to test for durability. The highest-rated bags had no scuffs or tears after rough handling, and the packed items inside remained unharmed as well.

Our testers had no previous knowledge of the cost of each backpack until after testing was completed. This allowed us to give an unbiased rating of overall values, where the top bags were determined to be fairly priced based on a high-quality performance, especially for the pricier bags. After our lab tests, the backpacks were sent out for real-world testing for up to six months.

Tips for Buying a Carry-on Backpack

Consider under-the-seat versus carry-on bags.

Not all carry-on backpacks will fit under the seat of an airplane, but if that’s your intended use, we recommend checking an airline’s underseat dimensions before heading to the airport. Similarly, with a carry-on backpack for the overhead bin, you’ll want to double-check the airline’s carry-on size restrictions to avoid paying unwanted fees if the bag is stuffed full of clothes.

Keep in mind what the bag will be used for

For those traveling by foot, a smaller, lightweight backpack would be better for portability and comfort. For those traveling by air, a compression bag or backpack that has plentiful organization could be a better choice so you get the most out of the limited airline baggage space. When traveling by air, you might also want to consider an option with wheels for added convenience, like a rolling backpack, weekender, or duffel bag .

Frequently Asked Questions

During our test, we packed three shirts, two pants, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a toiletry bag into each bag and often had extra space for more clothes. Many backpacks come with a laptop compartment , but you’ll want to make sure that feature is included before purchasing yours.

Carry-on size restrictions vary by airline, and it’s possible for a carry-on backpack to not fit within some limits. Most bags will have a product details section highlighting the dimensions of the backpack. If you’re looking to fit the bag solely under the seat , you should check to make sure the bag fits the dimensions while it’s packed.

Really well made, and the leather is so beautiful. Very happy with my purchase!” Price upon publish date of this article:  $173.60

What to Look For In a Stylish Backpack for Women

  • Support and comfort: Backpacks are all about ease, and comfort is a top consideration when choosing the best one for you. “Unlike a heavy purse, a backpack gives you a lot better posture. It also divvies out the weight of whatever’s in the contents of the bag, as it’s thrown on the whole body rather than just one side,” says Wark. “It’s smart for those who are on-the-go a lot, especially when you’re on your feet.” Pay close attention to the size and material of the shoulder straps, and go for adjustable styles to personalize your needs.
  • Materials: From casual canvas totes to sleek leather backpacks, there are a variety of materials to choose from when searching for your next go-to bag. Opt for water-repellent fabrics like nylon when looking for something to take you outdoors (it’s also easiest to clean), try out a casual-chic look with faux-leather or polyester, or take it luxury with 100 percent leather for the ultimate elevated feel. “You don’t want to spend like $10 on the backpack, because it’s not going to have the proper comfort and material that a more expensive one would have,” Wark explains. “That doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune, but a backpack is something you want to invest in, much like you would a good handbag.”
  • Style: There are a variety of silhouettes and colors on the market when it comes to backpacks. “First, you want to look for something in a neutral color palette, something really sleek and classic,” Wark advises, “even if it’s a black or a brown, or maybe a cream that you can easily work into your existing wardrobe.” Try out a more traditionally rectangular backpack for campus, roomy pack for hiking, or a mini backpack purse to replace a top handle purse. There are also great, sleek options for both work and travel in modern shapes and varying sizes.
  • Size: When selecting the size of a backpack, first determine what you will carry in the bag. “Consider what kind of compartments you would need,” says Wark. “The more storage solutions inside the backpack, the better. If you just have one open space, it’s going to be incredibly frustrating.” For instance, perhaps a laptop sleeve is a necessity for work (don’t forget to double check dimensions!), or an exterior compartment is key for your water bottle. Smaller backpacks are great for single-use occasions like running to the gym, while larger ones with both interior and exterior pockets are fit for long days at the office, hauling baby gear, and overnight vacays.

30+ last-minute Victoria Day deals to shop this May long weekend — up to 70% off Amazon, Best Buy, Lululemon & more

We've rounded up the best deals, from tech to fashion — but hurry!

Lululemon shoppers say this is the 'perfect lightweight travel bag' — why they 'prefer it over the belt bag'

We're calling it: this will be summer's "it" bag..

New bag alert! If you're looking for a new everyday purse for spring and summer that checks the important boxes: practical and trendy, Lululemon's new Multi-Pocket Crossbody Bag 2.5L is no exception. Some shoppers say they like it even more than Lulu's viral belt bag — and we can see why. It's cute and compact and has enough space to stash all your necessities, plus a few extras. It doesn't get too heavy or bulky, either, making it perfect for everyday wear.

Scroll on to find out why we believe this is the new summer "it" bag and why you might want to get your hands on this hot item.

Lululemon Multi-Pocket Crossbody Bag 2.5L

Lululemon Multi-Pocket Crossbody Bag 2.5L in Cascadia Green.

The details

Casual and compact, the new bag from Lululemon is a smart wardrobe addition for all-day outings where you don’t want to lug around a ton of stuff.

With 2.5 total litres of carrying volume, it has a zippered main compartment, as well as interior pockets for holding all your essentials: phone, keys, wallet, hand sanitizer, earphones , lip balm and a small book or notebook. Plus, it has multiple exterior pockets for easy access.

There’s even a D-ring on the outside—designed to attach a nano pouch or keychain .

The bag measures 10" x 1.6" x 5.1" (25.5cm x 4cm x 13cm). The strap is 55.1" (140cm) when fully extended. However, it’s adjustable, so you can wear it at the length you prefer.

Lululemon Multi-Pocket Crossbody Bag 2.5L in Vapor.

Like most other water-repellent bags from Lululemon, this style has a body made from 100 per cent nylon with a 100 per cent recycled polyester lining and mesh.

Don’t throw it in the washer or dryer, and stay away from the dry cleaner, too. Instead, spot-clean it as necessary. It’s easy to wipe down!

Take your pick of three colours: versatile Black, Vapor (a soft white) or Cascadia Green (a version of classic Kelly Green), which is pretty for spring and summer.

What shoppers are saying

The Multi-Pocket Crossbody Bag 2.5L is a hot new item, but people are already comparing it to the Everywhere Belt Bag.

"I prefer this one over the belt bags," writes one reviewer. They continued to say it has "more functional pockets" and "can fit a lot more things" despite being "a little narrower."

Another person called it the "perfect lightweight travel bag" and said they love how the pockets "keep everything organized."

Lululemon Multi-Pocket Crossbody Bag 2.5L in Black.

While one person said it's a "pretty cute bag," they said they ordered the white bag but said it was more of a "grey colour."

Another shopper shared that they wished the strap was "a tiny bit wider."

The verdict

The fabulous new Lululemon Multi-Pocket Crossbody Bag 2.5L is a versatile choice with plenty of compartments for organization. Plus, the long, adjustable strap makes it work for more heights, body types and style preferences.

Will it replace the Everywhere Belt Bag as Lulu’s new “it” style? It seems it already has for some. However, keep in mind that it's a bit narrow, and the strap isn't as thick as others.

Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Is a Misogynistic, Racist, Retrograde Mess

Cannes Film FestivalEarly on into the three hours of viewing Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 I thought back to last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where I saw Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon for the first time. That brilliant movie is a full throated condemnation of the genocide of Native Americans by white people who claim the U.S. as their own. Horizon is not that.Instead, one of the inciting incidents in the unwieldy film that Costner directs is a violent Apac

The 8 Best Carry-On Backpacks

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

In this article

  • Best overall
  • Best duffel-backpack
  • Best for business travel
  • Best for lumbar support
  • Best for long trips
  • Best for short trips
  • Best for rugged trips

Even though much of my job as a travel writer involves testing suitcases , I usually prefer to fly with a carry-on backpack when I have the choice. You just can’t beat the sense of freedom that comes with strapping your possessions to your shoulders and heading to the airport — to me, a suitcase says “business trip” whereas a backpack says “adventure.” Not to mention the fact that backpack wearers are almost never singled out at the gate to check their luggage.

As backpack reviewer Geoff Grisdale of One Bag Travels explains, a carry-on backpack means “you can move around a lot quicker — it’s a lot easier to travel around cities with one.” Suitcases become cumbersome as soon as you’re confronted with cobblestone streets or multiple flights of stairs, adds freelance backpack designer Jeff Mullins. “And you have to have room to store them when you get home, whereas a backpack can be compressed.” Below, you’ll find the best carry-on backpacks for different sorts of trips, as tested by myself and other globetrotting experts. While you’re here, I’ve also written guides to the best travel pillows and the best toiletry bottles .

What we’re looking for

For trips longer than a weekend, you’ll require a carry-on backpack with a capacity of at least 28 liters, says Grisdale. From there, the size you choose will depend on your packing style, how long the trip is, and whether you need room for warm layers or extra shoes. Most of the experts I spoke with agreed that the sweet spot is somewhere between 28 and 35 liters.

Some carry-on backpacks can be as large as 45 liters, which is actually five liters more volume than an Away carry-on suitcase . While this size of backpack can be useful for long-haul trips, just note that it will be “really big and heavy — and you lose a lot of the mobility you’d get when carrying a smaller backpack,” says Grisdale. Mullins agrees: “If you’re a smaller woman, for example, I don’t think you should go over 35 liters.” Even though I’ll happily hike with an ultralight 55 liter backpack, I’m not a fan of wearing carry-on bags larger than 40 liters — they’re significantly bulkier, and the back pain afterwards just isn’t worth it.

Packing style

The best carry-on backpacks are designed for ease of packing. Rather than unzipping at the top, they’ll either open up like a clamshell (with separate zippered compartments on either side), or like a duffel bag (with one big compartment that’s accessible from the front of the bag). If you’re an intentional packer who likes to keep organized on the road, the former option is likely best. But Grisdale notes that duffel-style bags are usually quicker and easier to pack because “you can just stuff your gear in there and off you go.”

Your backpack will be crammed into overhead bins or underneath aircraft seats, so look for one that’s fairly rectangular in shape, with straps and a hip belt that can be removed or tucked away. “Anything that dangles has to be gone,” says Mullins. He also notes that there should be a handle on pretty much every side of the bag, so you can grab it from whichever space it’s wedged.

Organizational features

A nice thing about living out of a backpack as opposed to a suitcase is that exterior pockets provide easy access to small items like wallets and passports. I also love that backpacks typically have loops or straps on the outside to which you can attach carabiners and clips. A good backpack will enable you to “get to all your small stuff without fully opening it,” says Mullins. “Whether that’s your phone, earbuds, book, glasses, or food.” You still don’t want a backpack with too many pockets, as these will steal real estate from the main compartment inside. “I like enough exterior pockets to be able to hold gear but not so many pockets that they take up a lot of room in the bag,” says Grisdale.

Best carry-on backpack overall

Cotopaxi Allpa 35 L Travel Pack

Capacity: 35 liters | Packing style: Clamshell, tuckaway straps, removable waist belt | Organizational features: External laptop sleeve, top pocket, carabiner loops

The Cotopaxi Allpa is truly a backpack for suitcase people. Its clamshell design unzips fully to reveal a large mesh compartment on the right-hand side and three smaller ones on the left, mimicking the layout of rolling luggage. It also has a hidden laptop sleeve in the back that’s generously padded (I once checked my Allpa with a MacBook inside and the laptop survived unscathed), as well as an easy-access storage compartment on top that can fit snacks, a book, and your passport. The bag is comfortable to carry, with a sternum strap and removable waist belt for extra support. It comes in three different sizes, but this 35-liter version will be the best for most people — it’s big enough for a week’s worth of clothes but small enough that you can use it as an airline personal item or large daypack. (Strategist contributing writer Margaret Eby took one on a flight to Italy in addition to a rolling suitcase, and says the tuckaway straps helped her squish it under the seat in front of her.) One gripe: There’s no external water-bottle holder on the Allpa 35, although you could easily attach a carabiner to any of its handles or lash loops.

The best carry-on duffel backpack

Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC

Capacity: 30 liters | Packing style: Duffel, tuckaway straps, tuckaway waist belt, convertible shoulder strap, trolley sleeve | Organizational features: External laptop compartment, top pocket, water bottle holder

Patagonia’s Mini MLC is constantly sold out, and for good reason. This is an unusually roomy and rugged bag that can be used as your main piece of carry-on luggage (it’s available in a 45-liter version as well, if you prefer to overpack) or as a personal item that sits atop your wheeled carry-on. (Former Strategist associate editor Louis Cheslaw refers to his as a “ secret second suitcase ,” because it lets him pack heavy without checking a bag.) Unlike the Allpa, the Mini MLC opens duffel-style, revealing a deep interior compartment that can fit several outfits and a pair of extra shoes. There’s also a laptop compartment, small stash pocket on top of the bag that’s big enough for a passport or wallet, and stretchy water-bottle holder.

The best (less-expensive) carry-on backpack

TomToc Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack

Capacity: 40 liters | Packing style: Duffel opening, compression straps | Organizational features: External laptop compartment, water bottle holder, quick-access front pocket

At less than half the price of the Allpa or Mini MLC, TomToc’s Navigator is a thoughtfully designed carry-on backpack with a large capacity and helpful organizational features. It zips open at the front to reveal a generous duffel compartment that can be filled with several outfits, whether or not you’re using packing cubes . There’s also a front pocket that’s big enough for a book, as well as a laptop sleeve in the back that can be fully unzipped, revealing extra storage space for documents, cables, and stationery. It’s an excellent affordable option, according to Grisdale.

The best carry-on backpack for business travel

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro

Capacity: 30 liters | Packing style: Clamshell, removable waist belt | Organizational features: External laptop compartment, top pocket, front pocket, water bottle holders

Tortuga’s backpack designs are highly respected among gear reviewers across the internet. I’ve been testing out its very professional-looking Travel Backpack Pro, which opens clamshell-style to reveal two suitcase-style compartments and also features a nicely padded laptop sleeve with a false bottom for extra protection. The sternum straps are extremely comfortable and can be tucked away when not in use, the bag’s rectangular shape means it slots easily into overhead lockers (as well as airline baggage sizers — mine recently passed the Spirit Airlines personal item test with flying colors), and I like that the exterior fabric is highly waterproof and easy to wipe down. It’s also much more anonymous-looking than Cotopaxi’s colorful Allpa or Patagonia’s gorp-y Mini MLC, which makes it ideal for business travelers and digital nomads.

The best carry-on backpack with lumbar support

Osprey Fairview 40 Travel Backpack

Capacity: 40 liters | Packing style: Duffel, adjustable tuckaway hip belt and harness | Organizational features: External laptop sleeve, external toiletries pocket

When spending her year abroad as the inaugural New York Times 52 Places traveler, journalist Jada Yuan learned the hard way that rolling luggage is terrible for long-haul travel. “I don’t know how I got through 16 stops of my trip before buying the Osprey Fairview,” she recalls. “My back and shoulders hurt all the time. I needed something with strong lumbar support, a waist belt, and a chest strap so that I could make it through the trip without getting crippled.” The Fairview’s packing style she says, is perfectly bare-bones: “Just one giant cavity, plus a zippered section for your laptop and a bunch of straps on the outside for carrying, say, a bulky jacket.” It’s definitely the most comfortable backpack on this list, says Grisdale: “Osprey’s packs are good because they have a lot of padding, they’re really thick, and they’re also adjustable. So if it doesn’t fit you right out of the box, you can move things around.”

Best carry-on duffel backpack for long trips

Away The Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L

Capacity: 45 liter | Packing style: Duffel, compression straps, removable shoulder straps, trolley sleeve | Organizational features: External laptop compartment, hidden top pocket for valuables

Away is best known for its hard luggage, but the DTC brand’s outdoor gear shouldn’t be overlooked. Brand marketing consultant Jennifer Olson came across this big duffel-backpack while gearing up for an eight-month road trip through South America with her partner. “We’d be living in a converted Land Cruiser and needed baggage soft and malleable enough to be thrown around the back of a truck and wedged into small spaces,” she explains. “Though we’d be hiking here and there, we weren’t doing any hardcore treks, so we didn’t need a traditional trekking backpack — but rather something in between.” True to Away’s suitcase-y roots, the bag’s internal storage compartment features compression straps that are designed to secure a set of packing cubes , which Olson says really helped keep things organized on her big trip. And the convertible straps have come in handy now that she’s returned home: “I usually use it as a duffle when I’m on weekend trips or using it as a carry on, and when the bag is a little more loaded with my things, I use it in backpack mode to disperse the weight.”

The best carry-on backpack for short trips

ULA Ultra Dragonfly

Capacity: 30 liters | Packing style: Duffel, compression straps | Organizational features: Internal laptop sleeve, stretchy side and front pockets, front bungee elastic

I first heard about the ULA Ultra Dragonfly when lurking on the 729,000-member-strong sub-Reddit r/OneBag , which has popularized the idea of bringing no more than one smallish bag on trips and vacations. And while many One Baggers own Allpas and MLCs, this is the bag they covet most. It unzips duffel-style, with a Goldilocks-size 30-liter capacity that means it can hold a decent amount of stuff but still slide underneath a plane seat if needed. There’s no hip belt, but uniquely shaped shoulder straps are designed to be worn for hours at a time without discomfort. There’s a laptop sleeve for digital nomads, and the Ultra fabric is slightly stretchy (allowing for a bit of overpacking), unusually durable (similar to ripstop nylon), and highly waterproof (which makes it appropriate for treks and other more rugged adventures). There’s just one catch: Due to stock issues, you can only purchase the Dragonfly Ultra once a week on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. ET. Within a couple of hours, the bag sells out and its buy button disappears for another seven days.

The best carry-on backpack for rugged trips

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel

Capacity: 45 liters | Packing style: Duffel, tuckaway shoulder straps, compression straps | Organizational features: External shoe compartments, external laptop sleeve, passport pocket

More duffel-shaped than some of the very suitcase-y backpacks on this list, Timbuk2’s unique carry-on has zip-up shoe pockets at each end, allowing you to separate dirty footwear from the rest of your stuff — an especially nice feature for anyone packing a pair of hiking shoes . I also like how waterproof this bag is. All of the fabric is easy to wipe down, and the bottom of the bag has an extra protective “boot” which means you can plonk it down anywhere without worrying about it getting muddy. “The very considered design is ideal for someone who is most at home hopping on and off planes and trains,” says Andrew Barker, the former chief content officer of the travelers club, PRIOR . He appreciates the TSA-friendly slip pockets, which give easy access to your laptop and passport.

The Best Backpacks for College and High School Students

Our five picks for best backpack for college and high school students, shown in a row.

By Zoe Vanderweide

Zoe Vanderweide is a writer focused on style and accessories. She has personally tested nearly 300 bags, jeans, bras, shoes, and more.

A great school backpack is a constant companion, carrying all the essentials for a long day of classes, clubs, sports, internships, and more. But it’s not just for toting gear—it’s a wardrobe staple and an opportunity for students to express their personal style. So it’s important to find one that’s versatile, good-looking, comfy, and durable enough to stand up to plenty of wear.

Since our first round of testing in 2015, we’ve tried dozens of backpacks in a variety of styles. The five we recommend are the best we’ve found for high school and college students: an ergonomically pleasing pack , a nostalgic bag with timeless appeal , a versatile yet polished workhorse , a roomy and classic school backpack , and a well-organized pack with streetwear cred .

Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L

The research

A sporty pack for all-day comfort: patagonia refugio daypack 26l, a nostalgic school bag: fjällräven kånken laptop, a contemporary and versatile backpack: everlane the renew transit backpack, a campus classic: herschel classic backpack xl, street style, sized up for school: eastpak padded double, why you should trust us, how we picked and tested, other good backpacks, the competition.

Our pick for best backpack for all-day comfort, the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L.

Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L

Ergonomic hero.

With its padded mesh straps and back panels, this sporty-looking pack makes carrying heavy loads lighter and comfier. It also has the easiest-to-use water-bottle pockets of any bag we’ve tested, as well as a removable laptop sleeve—but it could use more interior organization.

Buying Options

If you have lots of stuff to haul around—big textbooks, a large water bottle, or bulky gym gear—the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L is a friend in need. The bag’s ergonomic and comfort features keep heavy loads feeling light. Plus, it has a sleek, sporty design and is available in lots of appealing colorways that feel at home on any college or high school campus.

It’s the comfiest, most ergonomic backpack we tested. Of all the bags we wore, the Refugio was the best at distributing weight. Its adjustable, contoured shoulder straps and generously padded back panels are composed of a breathable recycled polyester mesh, making even a fully loaded pack feel light and cool. And a removable sternum strap helps to stabilize the bag on your body, taking pressure off your spine.

It’s packed with thoughtful features. There’s a roomy pocket on the face of the pack that opens via a vertically oriented zipper, allowing easy top-to-bottom access to smaller items, while the large main compartment is ideal for bulkier stuff like clothing and shoes. A separate padded laptop compartment keeps your computer and textbooks contained snugly against your back; tucked inside, you’ll find a removable padded 15-inch laptop sleeve with a zippered mesh pocket for storing chargers and school supplies.

We especially love that the Refugio has two side water bottle pockets, which are constructed of a stretchy mesh material that makes it easy to slide large bottles in and out, even when you’re wearing the pack. Compression straps, located on the sides of the pack above the water bottle pockets, can be used to keep taller bottles extra secure. After a year of use, one Wirecutter staffer who has this pack confirms that the pockets have retained their shape and stretchiness.

A person wearing the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L backpack while walking in a park on a sunny day.

It’s tough and water-repellant. The Refugio’s outer body, constructed from abrasion-resistant recycled polyester, repels water and keeps your gear dry thanks to a PFAS -free DWR (durable water repellent) finish. All of its components—from the buckles to the sliders to the zippers—are of high quality and function just as they should.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • This pack doesn’t have much internal organization. While the removable tech caddy has organizational pockets, there aren’t any smaller pockets within the bag’s various compartments.

Dimensions: 19 by 12 by 6.5 inches

Weight: 1.75 pounds

Warranty: The Refugio is backed by what Patagonia calls its Ironclad Guarantee , which promises to repair, replace, or refund any item you’re not happy with, at any point. For normal wear and tear, the company will fix damage and charge you based on the extent of the repair.

Our pick for best backpack for college with a nostalgic school bag look, the Fjällräven Kånken Laptop 15-inch.

Fjällräven Kånken Laptop

Schoolyard style.

This compact, durable backpack is big on nostalgia and aesthetic appeal. But while its straps are lightly padded—a significant upgrade from the original Kånken—it still isn’t ideal for carrying extra-heavy loads.

The Fjällräven Kånken Laptop is a vintage-influenced pack, beloved by many a hip kid. It’s the knapsack that you (or your parents!) might have carried in elementary school, only more sensible and grown-up with the welcome addition of lightly padded straps and a protective laptop compartment.

It has an iconic look, with clever updates. The original Kånken pack was designed for Swedish schoolchildren back in 1977 and continues to draw a devoted following among kids and adults alike. The updated Kånken Laptop retains the youthful, stylish charm of its predecessor—available in the familiar Fjällräven array of colors, from muted grays to splashier shades of orange, blue, and mustard—while adding useful features such as a padded laptop compartment and cushioning on the straps. (The first iteration has just plain webbing.)

It’s ideal for midsize loads. I carried the Kånken Laptop—loaded up with a laptop, a change of clothes, a toiletry bag, a notebook, a water bottle, chargers, and other odds and ends—for a full 12-hour day on my feet, and it was so comfortable that I nearly forgot I was wearing it. But the lightly padded straps aren’t meant for shouldering heavier gear (think multiple large textbooks).

With an 18-liter capacity, this is the smallest backpack we recommend. But thanks to its deep, boxy shape and clamshell opening, it somehow manages to feel bigger on the inside (could this be the Tardis of backpacks?).

It provides easy access to your essentials. The Kånken Laptop’s main compartment is roomy and deep, with one slip pocket for stowing a notebook or textbook. A zipper runs around three sides of the backpack, allowing the pack to open like a suitcase—a feature that one tester appreciated when using the Kånken Laptop as an overnight travel bag.

The laptop compartment fits computers up to 15 inches and has a separate zipper, so you don’t have to dig through the main compartment to grab your laptop. (The Kånken Laptop also comes in versions made for 13- and 17-inch laptops, so you can choose the size that best suits your needs.) A zippered pouch on the front is the perfect spot for smaller items you need to access quickly, such as a wallet, keys, or a phone charger.

Its double top handles come in handy for carrying and hanging the pack. This is the only bag we tested with this extra-versatile feature. One Wirecutter staffer who owns the Kånken Laptop told us that being able to comfortably switch between wearing the bag on her back and carrying it by its top handles makes navigating buses and other crowded spaces much easier. Plus, the handles help the bag stay securely put on the hook of a bathroom stall.

Someone wearing the Fjällräven Kånken backpack.

Its material is strong and water resistant and ages uniquely. The Kånken Laptop is constructed from Vinylon F, a durable synthetic fabric that’s water resistant without the use of any chemical coating. I was caught in a downpour with this backpack and am happy to report that its contents remained dry.

One long-term tester says that after five years of regular use, the Kånken Laptop is still sturdy, without any ripping at the seams. Although its material can feel a bit stiff straight out of the box, it softens up after a few months of wear and develops a unique weathered patina over time.

  • The Kånken Laptop’s lightly padded straps are comfortable for carrying light to medium loads, but less than ideal for toting multiple textbooks and other heavy gear.
  • The pockets lack internal organization features (save for a simple slip pocket in the main compartment).
  • The non-elasticized twin bottle pockets (one on either side of the bag) are a bit narrow—a 27-fluid-ounce water bottle fits, but a 1-liter bottle doesn’t.

Dimensions: 15.7 by 11 by 6.3 inches

Weight: 1 pound

Warranty: The Kånken Laptop is covered by a limited lifetime warranty that offers repair or replacement for products purchased from authorized sellers. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear.

One of our picks, the Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack.

Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack

Modern and functional.

A sleek design and utilitarian features (such as a luggage pass-through and magnetic top closure) make this sophisticated bag feel pricier than it is. But unlike our other picks, it isn’t backed by a warranty.

Everlane’s The ReNew Transit Backpack is a versatile, feature-packed bag that delivers on both form and function. It’s ideal if you’re looking for an understated pack that easily transitions from campus to the office to the airport and beyond. And its polished appearance belies its sub-$100 price.

It has a clean, wear-anywhere aesthetic. The Transit’s sleek, contemporary aesthetic makes it appropriate for nearly any setting; it functions just as seamlessly as a mature professional bag as a student backpack. The recycled-polyester exterior comes in a pleasing array of muted hues, and you can choose between a labeled or logo-less version (we tested the label-free style).

It’s light and adjustable. Featuring an ultra-lightweight build and padded, subtly contoured straps, this 27-liter pack was comfortable for carrying medium-size loads in our tests. We found it easy to adjust the straps to get the perfect fit.

It has smart internal organization and extra features that make life easier. A spacious front zip pocket affords quick access to on-the-go essentials, so you don’t need to take the bag off every time you flash your ID or swipe a transit card. The bag’s fold-over top has another roomy zip pocket, and is secured with a convenient magnetic closure—a favorite feature among all of our testers, and a plus if you have reduced manual dexterity.

The Transit’s main compartment has two slip pockets for notebooks or folders and an interior water-bottle pocket, while a second, exterior water-bottle pocket on the opposite side offers added versatility. A zipper along the side of the bag opens to a separate, lightly padded laptop pocket that can accommodate computers up to 15 inches.

Notably, this is our only school backpack pick that’s equipped with a luggage pass-through strap, which allows you to attach the bag to the handle of a rolling suitcase when you’re on the go; it’s a handy feature.

Someone wearing the Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack.

It feels sturdy and well-made. Though its materials aren’t quite as hard-wearing as those of our picks from Patagonia and Fjällräven (and it’s not backed by a warranty), we still think the Transit will hold up nicely over time. The bag’s water-resistant exterior is made from a sturdy recycled polyester, and the all-metal hardware feels durable. One tester, who’s been using the Transit regularly for a year and counting, reports that her bag isn’t showing a single sign of wear.

  • Accessing the laptop compartment of the ReNew Transit can be a little fiddly: The bottom of the shoulder strap attaches just outside the compartment’s zipper opening and can get in the way of sliding a laptop in and out, so you’ll have to insert and remove your computer at an angle. The side zipper is also oriented in a way that favors right-handed people.
  • The Transit’s lightly padded shoulder straps are not as comfortable or effective when the backpack is heavily weighed down.
  • This is the only bag we recommend that isn’t backed by a warranty.
  • Due to the popularity of this bag, there can be stock and availability issues.

One of our picks, the Herschel Classic Backpack XL.

Herschel Classic Backpack XL

Traditional with a twist.

Simplicity is what makes this bag cool—and it comes in a plethora of colors and patterns, whether you’re looking to stand out or blend in. You won’t find any fancy laptop protection or organizational features inside this pack, though.

An unfussy, functional bag with retro-inspired styling, the Herschel Classic Backpack XL has earned a dedicated fan base among cool kids of all ages. Plus, it’s spacious enough to take you all the way from a 7 a.m. sports practice to a midnight study session.

It has traditional school bag styling—in a good way. Charmingly simple? Yes. But the Herschel Classic has enough special signature details to keep it from being dull. The basic silhouette gets a dose of personality from its red and white striped lining, corded zipper pulls, and instantly recognizable front pocket branding. It also comes in more than two dozen colors and patterns, from basic blacks and grays to floral prints and camos.

It’s extra-roomy. With a 30-liter capacity, this pack is the most spacious of any of our picks. Inside the large main compartment you’ll find an elasticized laptop sleeve that can accommodate computers up to 15 inches; you could also use it to store notebooks or a textbook. The Classic’s front zip pocket is ideal for carrying smaller items like earbuds , pens , and a wallet , and it includes a clip for securing your keys.

Unlike smaller versions of the Herschel Classic, the XL size is equipped with two side water-bottle pockets that can each comfortably fit a 24-ounce Takeya water bottle .

The straps work well. The Classic’s straps are flexible, nicely padded, and easy to adjust. And one particularly thoughtful feature helps tame whatever webbing remains dangling after you’ve adjusted them: elastic loops for tucking in any excess.

Someone wearing the Herschel Classic Backpack XL.

The fabric is sturdy. The Classic’s durable body is made from recycled post-consumer water bottles. And though we wouldn’t want to get caught in torrential rain with our laptop inside, it’s inherently somewhat water resistant.

For $30 more, you can purchase the Classic Backpack XL in a weather-resistant fabric , but we didn’t test that version.

  • It’s the simplest bag we recommend, with the least internal organization.
  • The laptop sleeve sits inside the main compartment, so it’s not as easy to quickly retrieve your computer from this backpack as it is from our picks with dedicated laptop compartments.
  • The laptop sleeve, which is just a plain fabric slip pocket with elastic at the top, offers minimal protection: The bag’s lightly padded back panel is the only thing cushioning your computer.
  • While it’s comfy, this backpack could be more ergonomic. Its shoulder straps are straight rather than contoured, and it lacks a sternum strap and a breathable back panel.

Dimensions: 17.5 by 12.5 by 6 inches

Weight: 1.6 pounds

Warranty: The bag is backed by Herschel’s limited lifetime warranty , which covers any bag purchased from an authorized retailer against material and manufacturing defects. It does not cover loss, damage, or general wear and tear.

One of our picks, the Eastpak Padded Double backpack.

Eastpak Padded Double

Form and function from a streetwear fave.

As sensible as it is stylish, this durable polyester pack has plenty of cool storage options. But if you carry a big water bottle, this bag’s single, small-ish side pocket might not be practical.

If you’re looking for a cool, casual backpack from a brand with recognizable street-style chops, the Eastpak Padded Double is the answer. It’s a more practical and functional—yet still fab—twist on the brand’s best-known backpack, the Padded Pak’r . The Padded Double retains the same general vibe and swagger as the original, except it has been elongated by about three inches, which confers some advantages: a pair of handy front pockets, a generous 28-liter capacity, and what we consider to be an even more attractive, well-proportioned silhouette.

It offers great organizational extras. The Padded Double has a large main compartment, with an elasticized slip pocket that fits most 13-inch laptops (it can also be used to keep a textbook or notebooks secured close to your back). Two large front zip pockets offer added versatility for wrangling smaller items that you need to access quickly.

A discreet third pocket at the top of the bag unzips to reveal one of our favorite design elements, a phone (or sunglasses) pouch with a delightful, minky-soft lining. A hidden stash pocket on the back panel is great for securely storing important items such as passports and credit cards, especially if you plan to use the bag when traveling.

The bag has only one smallish water bottle pocket, on the left side—so it’s harder to balance out the pack’s weight on the right, and it’s not ideal if you carry a wide bottle.

Its straps are a pleasure to wear. We were impressed with the Padded Double’s gently contoured, cushioned shoulder straps. Unlike the stiff, scratchy straps on other models we tested from Eastpak and JanSport , the Padded Double’s soft, subtly curved straps were well-constructed and comfy.

Someone wearing the Eastpak Padded Double backpack.

It feels substantial, but not overly stiff. The Padded Double’s polyester fabric is sturdier than the thin nylon exterior of Eastpak’s Padded Pak’r and Padded Zippl’r models, and less stiff than the material of our Herschel pick . Polyester is also inherently water resistant, offering some protection for your gear in inclement weather, even without a water-repellent surface coating.

All the details on this pack feel high quality. The zippers are outfitted with long pulls that make opening and closing the various pockets and compartments a breeze, and the bottom of the bag is padded and reinforced.

  • The Padded Double’s laptop pocket is located in the main compartment (not in a separate compartment), making computer retrieval a bit more cumbersome than if it were on its own.
  • It has only one small-ish water-bottle pocket, located on the left side (it fits a 24-ounce Takeya water bottle, but only just)—so it’s harder to distribute weight evenly.
  • Due to the popularity of this bag, it’s frequently out of stock.

Dimensions: 18.5 by 11.2 by 8.3 inches

Weight: 1.18 pounds

Warranty: The Padded Double is backed by Eastpak’s 30-year warranty , which covers damage to zip pulls, sliders, seams, and some fabrics. Discoloration and damage to the buckles, zipper tape, and inside coatings are covered during the first two years of the warranty period. The warranty does not extend to holes, cuts, tears, or self-repairs.

We’ve been reviewing backpacks at Wirecutter since 2015, scrutinizing hundreds of them online and evaluating scores in person across a range of styles and situations. We also consulted with Sarah Lloyd, a physical therapist and director of clinical education at Spear Physical Therapy , for expert advice on how to choose a comfortable backpack and wear it ergonomically .

To choose the best backpacks for high school and college students, we focused on the following criteria:

  • Comfort and ergonomics: Features such as contoured, easy-to-adjust shoulder straps, breathable padding on straps and back panels, and adjustable-height sternum straps (a horizontal strap that goes across the wearer’s chest) can all encourage correct ergonomic wear and enhance a bag’s comfort.
  • Organizational features: At minimum, a bag should have an easily accessible front pocket in addition to its main compartment, as well as a place to stash a water bottle. A secure laptop compartment or pocket is also essential, both for protecting a computer and for holding its weight close to your body.
  • Durability: A good school backpack should be durable enough to survive the wear and tear of at least four years of education, as well as weekend getaways and trips back home. To assess durability, we looked for sturdy, weather-resistant materials and quality construction, as well as generous warranties.
  • Price: We focused on options that cost $150 or less. We considered some cheaper bags (around $30) but found that their quality and craftsmanship were lacking; in our experience, it’s worth it to spend a bit more for something that a student will carry every day and likely use longer.
  • Aesthetics: The backpacks we considered vary in style from rectangular campus mainstays to sporty daypacks to bags polished enough for office internships. All of our picks are good-looking backpacks that our testers felt confident wearing.

Three people walking in a park talking, each one wearing one of our picks for best backpack for college and high school.

Bags that measured up to our initial criteria underwent real-world testing. After loading them up with laptops , water bottles , running shoes , textbooks, groceries, gym clothes, and toiletries, we wore the backpacks in a Seussian variety of situations (on a train! on a bike! in the rain! on a hike!), assessing each model for its comfort and ease of use.

We also asked a panel of testers, representing a diverse range of heights and body sizes, to examine the finalists, and they looked more closely at each bag’s fit, style, and organizational features, as well as its materials and construction.

If you can spend a bit more on a backpack that’ll last long past school: The Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe is pricier than our other picks, at around $160—but it will last a long time, and it’s backed by Timbuk2’s lifetime warranty . The bag’s clean, utilitarian vibe can easily transition to life after college, its durable polyester exterior and waterproof reinforced bottom are extra tough, and its dedicated 17-inch laptop compartment is well-padded. It’s also seriously organized: Equipped with numerous pockets and a well-designed internal organizer, the Timbuk2 Authority Laptop is especially handy for wrangling supplies, cords, chargers, and other tech. It’s comfortable, too—like our Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L pick, it has cool-wearing padded shoulder straps and back panels, as well as a removable sternum strap for added stability.

If you’d like a pack that fits all your gym gear: The San Francisco–based brand Aer makes excellent gym-ready backpacks that we recommend in our guide to laptop backpacks . We especially like the 19-liter Aer Fit Pack 3 and the 21-liter Aer Duffel Pack 3 for their combination of comfort, quality materials, and cool, vaguely futuristic design. At around $150 and $180, respectively, these Aer packs are more expensive than other bags we recommend for college and high school students, but if you can swing it, these backpacks are built to last and backed by Aer’s lifetime warranty . Both bags feature an ultra-durable Cordura ballistic-nylon exterior, YKK zippers, Duraflex plastic hardware, and an interior liner treated with an antimicrobial coating to ward off icky bacterial growth from sweaty gear. Other features include a ventilated shoe compartment, a luggage pass-through, padded mesh shoulder straps and a padded back panel, and a sternum strap.

The bargain-priced Amazon Basics Laptop Backpack has good reviews, but we found it alarmingly ugly, and it was out of stock at the time of our testing.

The straps on the Eastpak Padded Zippl’r , JanSport Main Campus , and JanSport SuperBreak Plus were awkwardly stiff, and their material felt thin and scratchy in comparison with that of our picks.

The Hakuba from Lo & Sons is an extra large gym-ready bag, but it doesn’t have a padded mesh back panel, so it feels hot to wear. The 35-liter capacity also makes it easy to overload, and it doesn’t have a sternum strap. Plus, it’s much more expensive than our picks.

The small, stylish Rains Backpack Mini isn’t functional enough to recommend as a school bag—it’s better suited as a fashion backpack or purse alternative. The unpadded straps are difficult to adjust, and it doesn’t fit much or offer internal organization.

The Topo Rover Pack has a cute campground aesthetic, and it’s well-made and comfortable. But its tall and narrow shape restricts the amount of stuff you can pack, and we found the double-buckle closure annoying.

Mini Shoulder Bag 4L

The Mini Shoulder Bag comes with a crescent moon-shaped body and adjustable strap that you can lengthen or shorten to your liking. Inside, find various mesh pockets and slots to store your phone, wallet, keys and other travel necessities with ease. While the Mini Shoulder Bag shows off a trendy moon-inspired shape, its most notable feature is its water-repellent material that’ll rest comfortably on your shoulder or elbow while keeping your travel essentials safe and dry. The body, lining and mesh fabrics are all designed from 100% recycled materials making it both vegan and sustainable.

Lululemon reviewers can’t get over how “stylish” and “chic” the bag looks. One shopper even said it was better than a luxury designer bag, opting for the Lululemon as their everyday pick.

“Best bag ever!” they wrote. “I was carrying the Marc Jacobs tote bag , but it faded and got dirty. I decided to get this one and I love it more! Fits everything you need, looks sleek, clean and sits perfectly on your shoulder.”

While the purse comes in three colors: white, black and green, the white shade is already sold out and the other colors aren’t too far behind. It even comes with a price tag of only $68, making it more affordable than the Taylor Swift-worn Aupen bag . Pick up the Lululemon purse here .

The Best Gym Bags Are the Best Bags, Period

By Avidan Grossman , Jake Woolf , and Will Porter

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The best gym bags are built for more than just the gym. Sure, they come with the product specs you'd expect from a bag designed to store your sweaty workout gear —water-resistant fabrics, adjustable shoulder straps, ample shoe compartments—but these aren't bags made exclusively for exercising.

Functionality is paramount, but so is form (kind of like, uh, going to the gym ). And now that you're hitting the gym again with some regularity—or swear this is the week you're going to start!—you'll need a bag up to the task. A tote bag won't do the job. A backpack feels inadequate. But a specialty gym bag (a.k.a. a duffle bag—or “duffel bag,” depending on your preference) with a generous main compartment to keep those filthy gym clothes separated from the chinos and button-up you'll be changing into post-shower? That's just what the doctor ordered. Especially when said gym bag comes with an abrasion-resistant laptop sleeve so you can bring your work with you wherever you go, you sick puppy, you.

The Best Gym Bags Shopping Guide

  • The Best Gym Bag, Overall: Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L , $159
  • The Best Gym Bag With Shoe Compartment : Tracksmith Weekend Duffel , $190
  • The Best Gym Bag on Amazon : Peak Design Travel Duffel , $140
  • The Best Gym Bag With Laptop Compartment: Lululemon City Adventurer Large Duffle Bag , $168
  • The Best Gym Backpack: Aer Fit Pack 3 , $149
  • The Best Waterproof Gym Bag: Rains Gym Bag , $95
  • The Best Retro Gym Bag: L.L.Bean Waxed Canvas Duffel , $159
  • The Best Budget Gym Bag: Nike "Brasilia" Training Duffle Bag , $52 $46
  • The Need-for-Speed Gym Bag: Red Canoe Boeing Stow Duffle Bag , $109
  • The C-Suite Gym Bag: Bennett Winch Weekender Holdall , $1,300
  • The Best Gym Bag for Bougie Bodybuilders: Saint Laurent Ripstop Duffel Bag , $1,250
  • The Best Gym Bag for Traveling : Matador Freefly Packable Duffel Bag , $85

And don't forget: Even the most technical gym bag can double as a slick weekender on a last-minute summer getaway or a lightweight carry-on for your first airplane trip in months—provided, of course, you invest in a style with the right accoutrement. Durability is a must, as is an easy-access side pocket to store your water bottle. A few carefully placed external pockets to hold all your small items never hurt, either. So even if you're an expert gym-goer getting reacquainted with the day-to-day grind, it's worth reminding yourself what a game-changer a high quality gym duffle can be, and then tracking down the best one for your routine.

Luckily, GQ Recommends unearthed 11 of the absolute best gym bags on the market right now, so you can hit your PRs—or just hop on the Hampton Jitney—in style.

The Best Gym Bag, Overall: Patagonia Black Hole

best lululemon travel backpack

Black Hole Duffel Bag, 40L

Patagonia Black Hole duffel bag tested and reviewed by Timothy Beck Werth

Patagonia Black Hole duffel bag, tested and reviewed by Timothy Beck Werth

Patagonia Black Hole duffel bag tested and reviewed by Timothy Beck Werth

Is there anything Patagonia's legendary Black Hole bags can't handle? In tote or dopp form, the waterproof 14-ounce 900 Denier nylon fabric works like an impenetrable forcefield, repelling whatever the world throws at it (and looks way better for the wear, though you can always hose it down for a makeshift factory reset). Its duffel, though, remains a standout, thanks to features like daisy chains for you to hook on an extra pair of climbing shoes or a portable speaker for your bike commute to and from the gym. The cavernous 40-liter main compartment is enough to house a weekend's worth of outfits, and features a separate mesh pocket that's great for keeping your sweaty gear far away from your crisp 9-to-5 standbys. Plus, its handles and straps mean you can carry it however you prefer—no more straining your biceps with extra work after a gnarly arms day.

The Best Gym Bag With a Shoe Compartment: Tracksmith Weekend Duffel

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, Tote Bag, and Baggage

Weekend Duffel

Tracksmith Weekend Duffel tested and reviewed by Will Porter

Boston’s Tracksmith needs no introduction by this point—they’ve been crafting some of the best heritage-inspired performance running gear for a decade now, not to mention whipping up dope collaborations with brands like District Vision and Brendon Babenzien’s new-look J.Crew. The Tracksmith Weekend Duffel is a mainstay in our rotation, even if we’re not headed out of town for race weekend. The bag is extremely well made and is built to last, much like the vintage pieces it draws inspiration from. It’s outfitted with a roomy shoe compartment for your stinky kicks or gym clothes, plus comes with a super handy nylon blanket to spread out on race day or in the park on a weeknight.

The Best Gym Bag on Amazon: Peak Design Travel Duffel

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, Tote Bag, and Baggage

Peak Design

Travel Duffel 35L

Peak Design Travel Duffel tested and reviewed by Tyler Chin

Sure, we already featured some other bags that you can buy on Amazon, but few are as high quality as the Peak Design Travel Duffel. Like all of the brand’s gear, it’s centered around photography and travel, but we absolutely love the 35-liter model for the gym. It has an extra long zipper that makes it easy to rummage around in, is made from heavy duty nylon that can stand up to a beating, and, maybe most importantly, is guaranteed for life against manufacturing defects and any failure that renders the bag unusable. It’s not hard to trust a product that is backed with that kind of confidence.

The Best Gym Bag With Laptop Compartment: Lululemon City Adventurer

best lululemon travel backpack

City Adventurer Large Duffle Bag

If you tend to book it to the gym as soon as you log off, you need a bag that can hold your workout duds and your office essentials—and won't look out of place at either. The City Adventurer is the best gym bag from Lululemon if only because it comes with plenty of storage for your sweat-wicking, four-way stretch gear along with a padded sleeve for laptops up to 16" (you know, in case you need to bang out some emails while you wait for the bench to free up). It's cut from a lightweight waterproof fabric and tricked out with handles, a cross-body strap, and exterior pockets, including an expandable option specifically for your sweat-soaked garms. We're also giving it bonus points because it's shaped like a bowling bag, which you should definitely use it for if this guy's energy matches your own.

The Best Waterproof Gym Bag: Rains Gym Bag

best lululemon travel backpack

Rains Gym Bag

Bloomingdale's

Rains is famous for outerwear that laughs in the face of inclement weather. Its duffle bag harnesses the brand's trademark waterproof tech to protect your workout gear from the worst of the elements, whether it's raining cats and dogs or you're the bedraggled owner of a pet insistent on slobbering all over your gym shoes.

The Best Budget Gym Back: Nike Brasilia

best lululemon travel backpack

Brasilia Training Duffle Bag

This one's a no-brainer. The Brasilia is one of the most popular gym bags in Nike's arsenal, and if you can't trust the Swoosh to provide a spacious, heavily-zippered duffle to store all your swoosh-emblazoned gear, who can you turn to? It's got easy-access exterior pockets for small valuables like your phone and earbuds as well as ventilated mesh side pockets to keep your sweaty clothes and dirty shoes from stinking up the main compartment. And with a durable coated bottom, you won't have to worry about scuffs and tears.

The Best Retro Gym Bag: L.L. Bean Waxed Canvas

best lululemon travel backpack

Waxed Canvas Duffle

Not everyone is into the newfangled waterproof, anti-odor, solar-powered BS that gym bags have become. What happened to a good ol' fashioned duffel bag? Well, L.L.Bean's timeless duffle bag has been around for decades and isn't showing any signs of going away. Sure, the recipe has changed a bit over several decades, but the vintage specimens that menswear geeks drool over aren't all that different from today's version. It's made with full-grain leather handles and all-cotton waxed canvas that'll repel water and look better with age (something none of the synthetic bags can say). Add to that detachable shoulder straps, convenient exterior zip pockets, a reinforced bottom, and a rugged heritage look that'll outlast any trend and you've got yourself a bag that'll see you pumping iron well into retirement.

The Best Gym Backpack: Aer Fit Pack 3

best lululemon travel backpack

Okay, yes—Aer's Fit Pack 3 is technically a backpack. But its fan-favorite style comes chock full of the type of product details you'd expect to see in a next-level duffle designed for heavy-duty wear and tear. Its exterior is made out of abrasion-resistant 840D nylon with Cordura side paneling, and a padded interior ensures your laptop stays secure no matter how many dirty socks you've wedged in there. Factor in an easy-access water bottle pocket and Duraflex hardware, and you're looking at a formidable gym bag alternative that might convert even the staunchest duffle devotee.

The C-Suite Gym Bag: Bennett Winch Weekender

best lululemon travel backpack

Bennett Winch

Weekender Holdall

Todd Snyder

If you’re hunting for a gym bag that doesn’t look out of place in a corner office, Bennett Winch’s luxe bag is the solution. It brings the clean lines of a weekender, the functionality of a gym duffel, and craftsmanship of the tailor who makes your bespoke suits. Hand-crafted in England using top-shelf materials (full-grain leather for the handles and reinforcement areas, heavy-duty brass for the zippered pockets, and water-repellent-bonded cotton), Bennett Winch's Weekender is all about subtle opulence. The roomy main compartment has a padded laptop sleeve and enough space for at least two outfits. Plus, the bag comes with two separate waterproof compartments—one on either end—to keep stanky shoes and sweaty clothes away from your suit and tie.

The Best Gym Bag for Bougie Bodybuilders: Saint Laurent Ripstop Duffel Bag

best lululemon travel backpack

Saint Laurent

Ripstop Duffel Bag

They say that showing up to the gym is half the battle, but for plenty of folks, it's more like all-out war. That's why you pay thousands of dollars a year to go to a gym jam-packed with amenities like a juice bar and a day spa—storming the beaches, or, in this case, hauling your ass to the gym, feels like way less of a struggle when you're not slumming it to your local NYSC. Enter Saint Laurent's ripstop bag, which took home top honors in this year's Fitness Awards for its ability to transform your workouts into bona fide fashion moments. You’ll never have to worry about ID'ing it in the locker room, but don’t blame us if someone “accidentally” walks off with it while you’re on the treadmill. All's fair in love, war, and lifting.

The Best Gym Bag for Traveling: Matador Freefly Packable Duffel Bag

best lululemon travel backpack

Freefly Packable Duffel Bag

Meet your secret to keeping up your workout even on vacation. The Matador Freefly features all the crucial gym bag amenities like water-resistant materials and dedicated compartments for large and small goods—with a superpower. The duffel rolls up into itself until it’s the size of a hamburger (and not even one of those giant restaurant monstrosities). Toss it into your luggage and you won’t have to juggle your gear on the way to the hotel gym again.

What to Look for in a Gym Bag

Materials: These days, most gym bags are made from some form of nylon, but some of our favorites incorporate leather and canvas, too. Nylon is easiest to clean and resists odors better than other materials, but if you’re looking for something that’s going to last, make sure you figure out how thick the material is. For example, some cheaper nylon bags may end up being quite flimsy, while other bags, like the Peak Design bag we mentioned, is made from bulletproof 600D nylon that could probably be dragged behind a car without busting. Make sure you also consider the zippers—nothing is worse than a faulty zipper that stops working after a few uses.

Type of bag: Yes, this story is specifically geared toward gym bags, but as you may have noticed, many of the bags on our list are intended for travel, weekends away, or commuting. Any bag can be a gym bag if you want it to be! Don’t worry so much about the name of the bag or what the brand states as the bag’s main purpose, just make sure it has what you want. Sometimes that’s a shoe compartment, sometimes that means finding a bag that can be carried by hand or slung over your shoulder, and sometimes you just want something cheap to tote a towel and fresh pair of boxers. In the end, this is up to you, so read the details, look at the images, and if you decide you like a bag, make it your go-to.

Size : There's no reason to drag a bag the size of your checked suitcase to the gym. If you're only bringing a change of clothes and a pair of shoes, you'll want a bag that's just big enough to carry all of that because your workout shouldn't be the commute to the gym itself. Also, take into consideration the size of your gym's lockers—if you get a bag too big, you'll have to leave your gear out in the open, just asking to be stolen.

How We Tested

Not only is our team here at GQ obsessed with bags, but we’re also a pretty sporty bunch. We are just as dedicated to spending time at the Park Slope YMCA or LES Equinox as we are to keeping our finger on the pulse of the latest style trends. This means that we definitely use the things we talk about. A web-based image is no good to us, and it shouldn’t be enough for you. So we test bags constantly, hauling our workout gear all over the place, looking for the best of the best to then recommend our favorites to you.

Our group of editors and writers includes marathon runners, road cyclists, rec league soccer players, and Barry’s die-hards, so you can be sure that each bag we recommend has been put through its paces.

The Best Men's Vacation Shirts to Pack This Summer

By Matt Ortile

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

For some, the thrill of travel comes not from visiting exciting places or even scoring the next flight deal—it’s planning the outfits. The best vacation shirts for men (really, the best menswear shirts that anyone can pack in their suitcase) work for a variety of occasions, from hanging out at the beach in Miami to shopping in local artsy neighborhoods of Mexico City to dining at elegant restaurants at the resorts of Amalfi . To help you get ready for your next sun-soaked trip, here are 43 options for some of the best shirts to pack for a summer vacation.

Below are five types of shirts to bring on vacation that can work for a multitude of settings and situations: printed shirts, linen button-downs, knit polos, athleisure tops, and classic white T-shirts. If you’re packing light , it’s all the more important to make sure that what you bring works with other pieces that make it into your bags; even better if they’re easy to wash in case you’re going on a longer trip. If you’re flying, pack one or two of these shirts in your carry-on in case you lose your checked luggage . The selections here come in at multiple price points, and one or two of each—plus a short, a trouser, shoes, and some underwear—will make for a flexible capsule wardrobe fit for most summer vacation plans.

Keep scrolling to see our hit-list of top picks for the best vacation shirts for men, or to jump right to the menswear shirt style you prefer.

Our top picks:

  • For all-day sightseeing in the city: Todd Snyder Silk Cotton Ribbed Polo
  • For dining at the Michelin-starred restaurant: Ralph Lauren Lightweight Linen Shirt
  • For partying out in town with the locals: Banana Republic Lyam Silk Resort Shirt
  • For going from the morning hike straight to brunch: AG Jeans Ace Active Performance Polo
  • For sitting on the plane for a red-eye flight: Rhone Session Quarter Zip
  • For everything else in between: Banana Republic Linen-Cotton Crewneck T-Shirt

Shop men's vacation shirts by style:

Linen button-downs, printed shirts, athleisure tops.

A good linen shirt will take you anywhere from Thailand to Punta Cana and from Palermo to Cuba. Wear it open with shorts and a tank-top and you’re ready for the boardwalk; tuck it into a pair of trousers to dine at the candle-lit restaurant at the resort where you’re staying. Linen is perfect for summer vacations because it’s light and breathable; the weave of the fabric keeps it from sticking to your sweaty skin. And if the fabric feels a little bit rough, good linen softens with repeated wearing and washing (read the care label; most linen shirts are best in cool water and dried on a line in the shade). Nothing says easy breezy vibes like classic white linen, but color on vacation is always a good idea.

Remember “going out” tops? Those weirdly business-casual outfits you wore to the club (or the pre-game at senior housing in college)? It seems like this decade’s equivalent are printed vacation tops—flowy or loudly graphic shirts that scream “I’m going to Puerto Rico !” They evoke good times and irreverence, a mood that matches the elation when the group chat finally makes the long-talked-about trip into a reality. Here are a number of options as far as printed shirts for vacation go, from sumptuously silky, to bold and bright, to almost comically themed. (Nautical print? On a yacht ? Groundbreaking.) Prints should be fun and exciting, but just remember the cardinal rule of shopping for vacation: Be sure you’d actually wear the item when you’re at home, even if it’s just to feel like you’re on holiday.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shirt, Beachwear, Sleeve, T-Shirt, and Coat

If you’ve opened a social media app in the last six months, you’ve probably been served an ad for knit polos—alternately called “sweater polos,” given that they can feel as soft as your favorite merino wool or cashmere sweater. It must have something to do with a wave of celebs casually hitting the red carpet in one of these bad boys—and it’s easy to see why. There’s something delightfully mid-century classic about the look of a knitted polo, and the texture of the knit lends a touch of dashing elegance to your outfit while being comfy enough for a long day walking around sunny Rome or waiting in line for Broadway rush tickets in New York’s Times Square . Pack a long-sleeve variation if you’re going to any relaxing body of water; it’ll be perfect for those chilly beachside or lakeside evenings.

Image may contain: Clothing, T-Shirt, Shirt, Knitwear, Sweater, and Sleeve

It may seem incredibly basic to put a, well, basic like this on a list of the best vacation shirts for men, but who’s going to argue that a classic white T-shirt doesn’t belong in anyone’s suitcase? It’s perfect for travel days , workouts at the hotel gym , and even underneath a suit jacket, if the setting is casual enough. ( GQ can fight me on this; white shirts and suits still work!) Plus, it can be extremely easy to clean at a laundromat—or the sink—for longer trips. Depending on what kind of tee you’re looking for, a good ol’ three-pack from Hanes might do the trick, but there’s a wide world of white T-shirts out there for everyone, from cotton-linen blends to pocket tees to crewnecks made entirely of cashmere. OK, maybe don’t toss that last one into the spin cycle.

Image may contain: Person, Sitting, Pain, Adult, Clothing, Sleeve, Face, Head, Arm, and Body Part

Good activewear is like mana from heaven for travelers. They’re great for coffee runs or training sessions, hitting the rides at Disney parks , or even hiking in national and state parks . These athleisure tops are well suited to days of high-performance activity (sweat-wicking, odor-resistant), while also refined enough that they can take you from the trail in the morning to brunch and cocktails at noon. Bonus: This kind of gear is perfect for travel days, too. You’ll be comfortable for long plane rides while looking put-together enough that someone might see you and decide you’re their airport crush for the trip. (Yes, it’s a thing .)
