Your Hawaii Island tour is split into two halves, as there’s just so much on the island to see! The first half begins outside the quaint town of Kailua-Kona, where you’ll see the historic Hulihe’e Palace, once the vacation home of the island’s royalty. You’ll then continue south to Magic Beach, where the sand sometimes simply disappears.

After that is Kahalu’u Beach, a perfect place for snorkelers, followed by the sacred Lekeleke Burial Grounds. Next, you’ll pass the remnants of Hikiau Heiau, an important religious site in ancient Hawaii. Past that is the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park for those looking to learn more about the island’s history.

Then you’ll see the Honaunau Rodeo Arena and learn all about Hawaii’s cowboys. Next up is Pebble Beach, where you’ll get to know the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele. You’ll also have the option to check out the Kula Kai Caverns, left by ancient volcanic activity.

Continuing on, you’ll reach the startling Punalu’u Beach, which features totally black sand! The route then passes an old sugar plantation, followed by the huge volcanoes Kilauea and Mauna Loa. This half of the tour concludes by Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can explore the island’s volcanoes up close.

The second half of the tour picks up farther to the east, in the picturesque town of Hilo. Then, cruise through the almost impossibly scenic Liliuokalani Park and Gardens.

Looking for surfers? You’ll find them catching waves next at Honoli’i Beach. After that is Onomea Bay, featuring a spectacular hiking trail with views that can’t be beaten. Then, admire the astonishing flora at the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden. Continuing on, you’ll arrive at the surprising sight of the Honohina Hongwanji Mission, a historic Buddhist temple.

You’ll then pass the Laupahoehoe Train Museum before reaching Laupahoehoe Point, a spectacular ocean vista. Don’t forget to snap some photos! Anyone hankering for a snack will definitely want to stop at the Hamakua Harvest Farmers Market before continuing on to the cowboy town of Waimea.

Up next on the Hawaii Island tour are a pair of great beaches: Hapuna Beach is the largest white sand beach on the island and Beach 69 is beloved by locals, so take your pick! Then you’ll arrive at the Kings Highway Foot Trail, where you’ll have the chance to see the ancient Waikoloa Petroglyphs. After that are another few scenic overlooks, followed by the beautiful Kekaha Kai State Park. Your tour concludes here, just north of where the first half began.

Coffee lovers rejoice because South Kona is renowned for growing some of the most expensive coffee in the world. As you head south out of Kailua-Kona, you’ll head to a higher elevation which is perfect for farming not only coffee but delicious tropical delicacies like passion fruit, guavas, Kona oranges, and macadamia nuts. Stop by the Kona Coffee Living History Farm just outside Captain Cook at mile marker 110 and learn about how the rare beans are grown and enjoy some tasty samples as well. Afterward, turn down Napoʻopoʻo Road toward Kealakekua Bay/Captain Cook’s Monument and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Park to take in a plethora of historical and culturally significant sites.

Pololu Valley Lookout

big island driving tours

From Kona, drive north on the main highway toward the Kohala Coast where you’ll take Highway 270 north toward the little town of Hawi. The black lava fields will evolve into the rolling, lush pasturelands of North Kohala. Keep going until the road ends – you won’t be disappointed! When you turn that last corner, be ready for the eye candy of a lifetime as you soak up the indescribable, dramatic view at Pololū Valley Overlook. It is without a doubt one of the most magnificent, awe-inspiring views on the island.

Waipio Valley Lookout

big island driving tours

Sacred Waipiʻo Valley is located on the northern Hāmākua Coastline. Called “The Valley of the Kings,” Waipiʻo is not only dramatically breathtaking but is also an important historical and cultural site on the Big Island. Over five miles deep with cliffs reaching up to 2,000 feet high, Waipiʻo Valley is home to the island’s tallest waterfall, Hiʻilawe, which tumbles 1,300 feet to the valley’s floor. Take in the views from the overlook at the end of Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive. Driving down isn’t recommended, as the road is extremely steep and is prohibited by most rental car companies. To get to Waipiʻo Valley, turn off of the Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Highway 19) onto Highway 240 at the town of Honokaʻa. Follow Highway 240 for about 9.5 miles where it dead-ends at the valley’s lookout point.

Akaka Falls

Located along the northeastern Hāmākua Coast, ʻAkaka Falls State Park is home to two beautiful waterfalls. A casual, 0.4-mile hike takes you strolling through an orchid-filled rainforest filled with lush ferns and bamboo trees. The paved footpath winds through this tropical haven toward the Big Island’s most famous waterfall, ʻAkaka Falls, which descends almost 450 feet into the stream below. To get to Akaka Falls, take Hwy 19 north from Hilo for about 20 minutes to the turnoff for Hwy 220 (west). The Hwy 220 turnoff is between the 13-mile and 14-mile posts. Antique Shops & Paniolo Culture

Explore a town rich in paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture and Hawaii state history. Honoka’a is a great stop on your way down the Hamakua Coast or on your way to or from Waipi'o Valley Lookout . The cattle on Hawaii’s Big Island was originally gifted to King Kamehameha in the late 1700s, he let the cattle herd roam, reproduce and become feral for the next twenty years, which devastated local agriculture. In 1812, the King began allowing hunting of the cattle and in the 1830s, he returned from Mexico with three vaqueros (Mexican cowboys), and thus, Paniolo Culture was born in Hawaii. The sugar industry later brought with it, immigration of many Portuguese cowboys, as well. After the sugar industry dissolved throughout the state, these Portuguese cowboys continued to utilize their previous dairy experience on their land in Hamakua. Many of these same ranches have been passed down through generations and continue to be working ranches throughout the area today.

With a town rich in history, you can also visit, Buddhist temples, some of the oldest Japanese cemeteries in Hawaii and a great collection of Antique Shops. Take a step back in time at Gramma’s kitchen for breakfast or lunch, don’t miss trying some amazing fudge and have fun finding all of the historical murals through town that celebrate this rich, living history and culture.

Big Island of Hawaii

Road Trip: The Big Island of Hawaii

Warm beaches, cool highlands, active lava flows, and lush jungles await.

The best way to see Hawaii's Big Island is to drive around it. You'll soon be immersed in a varied landscape unlike any other in the United States. You'll encounter lava desert, jungle, farmland, active lava flows, warm beaches, cool highlands, and views of soaring mountains and plunging valleys. And everywhere, you'll feel the aura of the mysterious Polynesians who landed here more than a thousand years ago and named the island Hawaii.

"The Big Island has it all," says Corky Bryan, a career paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, who's now a vice president at the island's 150,000-acre (60,702-hectare) Parker Ranch. He's right. This island is larger than all the other Hawaiian Islands combined; it's the only one still volcanically active; and it has rich evidence of native culture. The Big Island, where Kamehameha the Great established his kingdom, was the first Hawaii. To many, it's still the real Hawaii.

Begin in Kailua-Kona

In Kailua-Kona, American missionaries started the first Christian church in Hawaii in 1820. Today, the Mokuaikaua Church (75-5713 Alii Dr.; 1 808 329 0655; www.mokuaikaua.org ), which was rebuilt in 1837 of crushed coral and lava rock, is still a quiet sanctuary. Step across the street to the two-story, palm-shaded 1838 Hulihee Palace (75-5718 Alii Dr.; 1 808 329 1877; http://www.huliheepalace.net/ ), now a museum. Check out the enormous koa wood chair specially built to accommodate Princess Ruth, who measured over six feet tall and weighed over 400 pounds (181 kilograms).

Ahuena Heiau

Nearby, along the shore, is the reconstructed Ahuena Heiau (75-5660 Palani Rd.; 1 808 327 0123; www.kulana.hawaiiweb.org ). Heiaus are ceremonial stone structures usually built on a platform (as in this case). Using Ahuena as his headquarters, Kamehameha conquered and unified the Hawaiian Islands in the early 19th century. The surrounding village remained the capital of all the Hawaiian Islands until 1821. "For some of us, it still is the capital," says Kaleookalani Nakoa, a native Hawaiian and one of the official guardians of the heiau.

Kona Coffee Living History Farm

Continuing south along the scenic two-laner, you're soon high above the ocean, fields of bushes and berries indicating that this is coffee country. For a taste of the plantation lifestyle established over the past century, pull into the Kona Coffee Living History Farm just before the village of Captain Cook (mile marker 110; 1 808 323 2006; www.konahistorical.org ). You'll learn not just about locally grown coffee but also sample the luscious fruits that abound in Hawaii, such as Kona oranges, passion fruit, and guavas, among others.

Kealakekua Bay

A side road leads to Kealakekua Bay, from which you can see a monument marking the place where British explorer James Cook was stabbed to death by the natives in 1779. This happened just a year after he and his crew became the first Europeans to set foot on what he dubbed the "Sandwich Islands."

Coffee Shack

Back on the main road, stop at the mountainside Coffee Shack (after mile marker 108; 1 808 328 9555; www.coffeeshack.com ), built on a coffee plantation. Besides Kona coffee, lunch, and breakfast—try the eggs Benedict—the lanai, or porch, has views of 26 miles (41 kilometers) of coastline far below.

St. Benedict's

In the same area, don't miss St. Benedict's, better known as the Painted Church (84-5140 Painted Church Rd., Captain Cook; 1 808 328 2227; www.thepaintedchurch.org/history.asp ). To give his congregants the illusion of being in a European cathedral, its Belgian priest painted the interior with a simple trompe l'oeil technique in the early 1900s. Also nearby, look for the 180-acre (73-hectare) Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, preserving what's left of an ancient Hawaiian royal residence, a sacred place of refuge, and a heiau. Among the original artifacts on the site are petroglyphs and a 16th-century wall.

Lava Fields and Forests

For the next 40 miles (64 kilometers), the road traverses, alternately, old lava fields and Eden-like forests with flowering multicolored bougainvillea and hibiscus along the side of the road. Also look for tropical trees like the wide-spreading monkeypod and ohia trees with feathery red blossoms.

At Naalehu, stop at the Punalu'u Bake Shop (95-3642 Hamalahoa Hwy.; 1 808 929 7343; www.bakeshophawaii.com ), famed for Portuguese sweet bread and malasadas (doughnuts). Box up an assortment to eat later in the car.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Soon the Belt Road rises in altitude and lowers in temperature until reaching Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (1 808 985 6000; www.nps.gov/havo ). Stop at Kilauea Visitor Center to get maps and current advice on how to safely view active lava flows in the park. A good bet is a ranger-led hike.

Consider overnighting on the rim of the park's Kilauea Caldera at the Volcano House (Currently undergoing renovations; 1 Crater Rim Dr.; 1 808 967 7321; www.volcanohousehotel.com ). Another lodging, in the town of Hilo, is the 1899 Shipman House (131 Kaiulani St.; 1 808 934 8002; www.hilo-hawaii.com ), a Victorian mansion where author Jack London and his wife, Charmian, stayed during their 1907 visit.

North from Hilo, take a turnoff to the old village of Honomu, whose funky false-front businesses include an antique bottle shop. Honomu exists mainly because it's on the way to Akaka Falls State Park (1 808 974 6200; www.hawaiistateparks.org/parks/hawaii/Index.cfm?park_id=2 ), known for its 442-foot (135-meter) falls and lush rain forest surroundings.

Leave the main highway again at Honokaa to reach the viewpoint overlooking the nearly deserted Waipio Valley, 850 feet (250 meter) below. It's one of the premier panoramas in the state. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed to drive down the steep road to the valley floor and its black-sand beach.

Continuing toward the village of Waimea (also called Kamuela), along rolling hills of bright green grass, you'll enter ranch country, marked by billowing mist and lowing Angus cattle. Stop at the Parker Ranch Museum (67-1435 Mamalahoa Hwy.; 1 808 885 7655; www.parkerranch.com ) to learn about the ranch's long history. It was founded by American sailor John Parker, who arrived in Hawaii in 1809, worked for King Kamehameha, and eventually bought land.

Jacaranda Inn

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

On the ranch, you can stay in a garden cottage at the historic Jacaranda Inn (65-1444 Kawaihae Rd.; 1 808 885 8813; www.jacarandainn.com ), with a sumptuously remodeled ranch house and bunkhouses. It's a favorite of astronomers visiting the observatories atop Mauna Kea, the island's tallest peak at 13,796 feet (4,205 meters). For breakfast, try the French toast made with Portuguese sweet bread.

From Waimea, leave the Belt Road to take the winding Kohala Mountain Road to Hawi. Hard-hit by the decline of the sugar industry, Hawi has recently revived. Besides the rustic Bamboo Restaurant (55-3415 Akoni Pule Hwy.; 1 808 889 5555; www.bamboorestaurant.info ), look for Kohala Winds of Change (55-3435 Akoni Pule Hwy.; 1 808 889 0809; kohalawindsofchange.com ), which imports and sells scores of organic Chinese teas.

Puukohola Heiau

Now head south on the warmer and drier low road, stopping for a history lesson at the windswept ruins of the Puukohola Heiau (1 808 882 7218; www.nps.gov/puhe ). In 1791 King Kamehameha completed his conquest of the Big Island.

Finish Back at the Airport

From here, it's almost a straight shot back to the airport. Side roads lead to luxury resorts with sandy beaches and green golf courses. Also watch for signs to petroglyph fields that have primitive figures—of turtles, fish, and canoes—carved into the lava flows. They represent the native culture of old Hawaii that still survives on the Big Island.

Hawaii is a year-round attraction, but if you visit at Easter (March/April) you can see the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, a weeklong hula extravaganza that sells out months in advance ( www.merriemonarchfestival.org/about_merrie_monarch_festival.html ). See www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl for local weather conditions. For more on Big Island must-sees, lodgings, and eateries, see www.bigisland.org , www.kona-kohala.com , Downtown Hilo , and www.kamuela.com . The area code for Hawaii is 808. The attractions above fall along the 221-mile (355-kilometer) Hawaii Belt Road, driving counterclockwise from Kona International Airport, on the western shore, south to Naalehu, northeast to Hilo, northwest to Hawi, and south to the airport. Allow three days, including side trips.

What to Expect

The Big Island is exactly that – big! It can be overwhelming to work out what areas to visit together and how much time everything is going to take to see. With so many choices, you will need a plan!

Below, we have divided the island into 4 areas to explore that range from half day to full day. These provide a logical way to explore all of the best things to see and do all over the island.

Most visitors stay on the Kona side of the island and join the tour by driving on Hwy 19 or 11. Or From Hilo, drive north or south on 19.

Includes: 4 suggested itineraries to explore across the Big Island;

The Big Island’s most famous and popular place to visit is Volcanoes National Park .

Allow a  full day and head to the most active volcano on the planet. From the Kona side of the island, we follow around the bottom of the island along Highway 11 all the way to the Park. We’ll have time to review the volcanic forces at work behind the creation of the Hawaiian Islands, or you may prefer to embrace the Hawaiian legends version as it takes approximately 2.5 hours to arrive.

You can also tour directly from Hilo on Hwy 11.

Inside the park, the commentary continues on all park roads, from Halema’uma’u down to the ocean and back. There are many amazing formations created by eruptions spread over hundreds and thousands of years. There are 2 driving routes in the Park and expect to spend minimum 2-3 hours exploring.

Please note: after the volcanic events of 2018, the Park is reopening in phases. Best to check for latest status and updates with the NPS link in FAQ below.

For the true adventurers, a full  Island Circle itinerary adds touring to the green or east side of the Island.  From the panoramic views along the Hamakua Coast  and the 442ft   Akaka Falls State Park   to peeks into the lush  Waipio Valley .   Not much has changed since its plantation days, though you won’t see donkeys plodding down to the shore with sugar bags strapped either side anymore.

Plan for time in and around  Hilo  with its Liliuokalani Gardens, and follow the Hilo loop tour route for nearby  waterfalls and lava tube caves.

Don’t try to include Volcanoes National Park to this day, there is just too much to see and do and you’ll run out of daylight hours.

Driving from Kona to Hawi is an amazing journey with beaches, a surprisingly arid coast at times, views to Maui, black sand beaches from cliff viewpoints and driving over an old volcanic mountain makes for an excellent 1/2 day or longer of sightseeing. Follow the tour as it drives a loop itinerary that gives us a fantastic sample of old Hawaii, modern Hawaii, awesome beaches and huge ranches.

Relax at the end of the road at the  Pololu Valley lookout,  and spot the black sand beach way below.  On the return drive, as we climb over the Kohala Mountain, you’ll discover Hawaii’s wild wild west and the Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) around the rural and ranching areas of Waimea  before connecting back to the coast.

Pack your swimsuit and snorkeling gear for another  half day itinerary , this time driving south of Kona.

Kailua-Kona is the active hub of the western side of Hawaii and features energetic shopping and dining choices, mixed with historic landmarks and fun beaches like Magic Sands . Follow the road that heads south along the coast to tour through this vibrant area.

But then, we’ll quickly transition to areas of incredible Hawaiian cultural importance and sites that have been preserved for prosperity. Bring your snorkel gear for some excellent places to get close to fish and turtles too, especially at 2 Step .

We might enjoy a jolt of world famous Kona coffee right from a plantation before we connect with some of Hawaii’s significant cultural sites, the sanctuary at the Place of Refuge   and at  Kealakekua Bay . Then we’ll use Hwy 11 to circle back to Kailua-Kona.

Suggested Start Location

Kohala, Kailua Kona or Hilo – join anywhere along the route.

Suggested Time

Volcanoes National Park – Full Day

Island Circle – Full Day

Kohala North Loop  – 1/2 Day

Kona Coffee Coast – 1/2 Day

Driving Distance

The island is very large!  There’s more than 350 miles of driving to explore.

WHAT IS THE BIG ISLAND KNOWN FOR?

The Island of Hawaii, often simply referred to as the Big Island due to its size, is famous for its incredible natural attractions, including massive volcanoes, black-sand beaches and lush valleys.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT THE BIG ISLAND?

There really isn’t a ‘bad’ time to visit the Big Island , with relatively consistently warm temperatures year round. There’s really only two seasons in Hawaii: summer from May to October and winter from November to April. The off-peak, shoulder seasons of April to May and September to mid-December are when you’ll find the best value.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED ON THE BIG ISLAND?

If you really want to enjoy even a fraction of what it has to offer, you should plan on staying on the Big Island for at least four days , and ideally one week. You’ll want a full day in Volcanoes National Park and to drive the Island Circle, plus half days exploring the Kohala North Loop and Kona Coffee Coast.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO VISIT VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK?

Ideally you’ll want to spend a full day visiting Volcanoes National Park . Most visitors spend 2-3 hours minimum inside the park and you will most likely run out of daylight before you get to see everything on another part of the island.

HOW MANY VOLCANOES ARE IN VOLCANOS NATIONAL PARK?

Volcanoes National Park is home to two active volcanoes : Mauna Loa, which last erupted in 2022, and Kilauea which saw its last eruption in 2023.

WHERE CAN I SEE LAVA ON BIG ISLAND?

Volcanoes are unpredictable, and this can change at any time. Please visit the National Park Service for the current status.

Trip Planning

Waipio valley access closure.

As of 25 February 2022, the County of Hawaii has closed the Waipio Valley Road to all visitors until further notice, including pedestrians, due to rockfall and landslide risks. Hiking trails in Waipio Valley are also closed, and the best way for visitors to currently see Waipio Valley is from the Waipio Valley Overlook .

Note: Keck Observatory is Temporarily closed until further notice.

The Keck Observatory has a small visitor’s center with models and images from their highly successful telescopes on Mauna Kea. They are open from 10 am – 2pm Monday through Friday; admission is free.

Guests are invited with the aloha spirit and will discover captivating photos, railroad ancient rarities and memorabilia from days passed by. The volunteers have spent their lives in the village, and are pleased to "talk story" with guests. The exhibition hall grounds are planted with tropical trees and ornamentals and make a dazzling spot to walk, have a picnic or unwind.

Despite the fact that the exhibition hall is one of the littlest in the state, the community-run office on the Hamakua Heritage Coast still observes in excess of 5,000 guests per year from everywhere throughout the world. It is situated in the old station agent’s home and outfitted as it would have been in the mid 1900s on account of network occupants who reestablished and outfitted the home themselves.

Hours: The museum is open most weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Admission: $10/adult, $5/student, and $25/family

The summit of Mount Everest is higher above sea level than the summit of any other mountain, but Mauna Kea is the tallest when measured from base to summit. Astronomers from around the world explore the universe from its peak, and Hawaiians have many ancient spiritual connections to this special site. For visitors, it is one of the clearest places on the planet for viewing the night sky and offers a rare opportunity to experience the polar tundra in Hawai'i.

The Visitor Information Station (VIS) sits at 9,200 feet above sea level and is the best spot to view the night sky. ( We do not recommend you drive past the visitor center to the summit. The road is very steep and rough and only suitable for four-wheel drive vehicles.)

The VIS also features a gift shop, restrooms and knowledgeable staff to answer your questions.

Call (808) 935-6268 get weather conditions on a recorded phone line.

Visitor Information Station (VIS) Hours: Daily  9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

VIS Phone: (808) 934-4550

The ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center is part of the University of Hawaii at Hilo and is a gathering place that integrates science and Native Hawaiian culture. They have a visitor center with wonderful exhibits, programs and events. Since Hawaiian society was built on exploration and observation, Hawaiian cultural practices have become an important part of ‘Imiloa’s exhibits.

Hours: Tuesday-Sunday from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Visit their website for current admission options and prices.

Learn about the first lady of racing, Anna Lindsey Perry-Fiske at this historic site that’s dedicated to the rancher. The home is filled with family stories spanning five generations!

Tours are offered twice a day on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Advance reservations required.

In 1946 there was a devastating tsunami in this area that killed over 150 people, many of them being school children. During the tour you’ll hear the story of this tragic day and learn about a few brave survivors. At the beach park, you can pay tribute at a memorial that honors the lives lost that day. This is also a great viewpoint of the ocean coastline.

IMPORTANT NOTE : The road leading into the valley is closed indefinitely to both vehicles and hikers.

Waipi'o Valley is one of the most storied valleys in Hawaii. According to legends, the gods lived in Waipi'o in ancient days. It was also the royal center for many ancient rulers on the Big Island, including Kamehameha. There’s a stunning view of the valley just from the lookout area.

View the beautiful Umauma Falls and tropical garden at The Umauma Experience. There's a paved road right up to the falls where you can soak in the views of this stunning three-tier waterfall. There is a minimal entry fee that includes a self-guided tour of the falls and garden.

If you'd like to splurge on your vacation, then consider booking one of their amazing outdoor adventures. The Umauma Experience features a 9-line zipline tour, a deluxe ATV tour, a Zip N Dip combo, a swim & kayak experience, horseback riding, and a waterfall rappel and river tour. Check their website for details.

If you’re pressed for time, we recommend you skip this spot.

Hours: The last entry to see the falls is 4:30 p.m.

Note: There is a $5 per person fee. Drive-ups welcome. No pre-booking required.

Located just a short drive from Downtown Hilo is Rainbow Falls. On sunny days, rainbows appear in the midst of the 80-foot falls, making for some pretty magical views. The broad waterfall - nearly 100 feet in diameter - plunges over a natural lava cave and into the river below.

Kaumana Caves is a massive cave that is part of a 25-mile long network of lava tubes created by the Mauna Loa lava flow of 1880. The public part of the cave stretches about 2 miles and quickly goes pitch black as soon as you enter. Be sure to bring a flashlight if you plan to do some exploring. Shoes are recommended as the cave floor is slippery.

Sadly, some visitors have vandalized the cave by carving their initials into the walls or breaking off pieces of lava rock. We ask that you please travel pono --or with care--and leave no trace as you visit one of Hawai'i natural wonders.

Pro Tip! If you didn't bring a headlamp or flashlight with you, Costco sometimes carries an inexpensive three-pack of headlamps that you can pick up before heading to the caves.

Note: There is a $10 per vehicle parking fee, and a $5 entry fee per person.

Arguably one of the most famous waterfalls on Big Island, you can take the half-mile stroll on a paved path through lush rain forest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns to get a glimpse of this iconic natural wonder. The accessible portion of the park lies high on the right shoulder of the deep gorge into which the waterfall plunges, and the falls can be viewed from several points along a loop trail through the park.

Onomea Trail, or donkey trail, is an easy hike that runs along a breathtaking section of coastline that gives you 180-degree views of Onomea Bay. It’s worth it for the photo opportunities alone! Being on the wet side of the island, there are a lot of streams running through the trail as well as a small waterfall and a swimming hole.

If you want a more leisurely stroll through a manicured garden with roughly 2,000 plant species opt to visit Hawai'i Tropical Botanical Garden instead of hiking Onomea Trail. The garden is actually more of a nature reserve where scientists study the unique and endangered plants of the rain forests. The garden features a canopy of trees that include 100-foot tall mango trees from the 1800’s and one-hundred-year-old breadfruit trees as well. While you’re there, take the paved garden walk. It’s just over a mile and runs parallel to the Onomea Trail.

Note: The e ntrance fee to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is $30 for adults and $22 for children 6-15.

Located in Honoka'a, TEX Drive In is a favorite spot with hearty local-style plate lunches that will keep you fueled and ready to go for the rest of your journey.

Pro Tip! Be sure to try one of their hot malasadas. Malasadas are delicious Portuguese fried donuts dusted with sugar. TEX Drive In has some of the best in Hawai'i!

As you travel off the main road through this area in Hamakua towards Waimea, you’ll be driving above a network of underground lava tubes. We'll point out the entrances to three caves as you drive by.

IMPORTANT NOTE : The caves are no longer safe to enter. Please do NOT go inside.

Waimea Town, located in the heart of Paniolo Country, is an artsy ranching town known for its quaint bed and breakfasts and cowboy history. Waimea also has lots of amazing restaurants, a theatre, art exhibits, historic ranches and an astronomy center. It's a great place to stop to grab a bite or explore.

The name of this park is Ulu la’au which means ‘circle of trees’ in Hawaiian. It’s a great place for a stroll or a picnic to relax next to a flowing stream

The Parker Ranch Headquarers in Waimea offers self-guided tours of their historic homes and grounds.  Built in the 1800’s, the houses are packed with art, antiques and other historic relics that help tell the story of the Parker Ranch. It’s a great way to experience what life was like on this iconic ranch throughout the years.

Note: Self-guided tours are offered three days a week and require paid advance reservations. See their website for availability and admission fees.

The Saddle Road, officially named the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, is the main thoroughfare on the Big Island that connects Kona in the west with Hilo in the east. This 50-minute drive has  three optional stops:

1) A rest stop, which we’ll point on the tour; 2) A cinder cone where you can get acclimated to the altitude if you’re embarking on a journey to Mauna Kea; and 3) Mauna Kea, Hawaii’s tallest mountain.

If you’re not planning on visiting any of these places you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the drive.

Note: Keep an eye on your speed! Police monitor this highway closely and frequently hand out tickets to speeding drivers.

Before turning for Mauna Kea, there is a cinder cone you can pull off to on Saddle Road. Might be a good place to stop for some fresh air and just to get your legs moving before ascending Mauna Kea.

Here you will see many historic stores and buildings from quaint boutiques to fine restaurants and galleries. Most of the buildings were built in the early 1900’s but over the years have been remodeled and are still in use today.

Pro Tip! If you're pressed for time and want to see Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots before the gates close at 6:00 p.m. -- skip Downtown Hilo for now and come back for dinner.

This is a nice place to take a relaxing stroll next to the beach and hear an interesting story about the Hawaiian fishponds in ancient times.

Coconut Island is a small beach park in Hilo accessed by a small bridge. This island is also called Moku Ola, which means 'healing island' or 'island of life', and it used to be the home of an ancient temple that was dedicated to healing. Legend has it that swimming around the island three times would heal any ailments or ill feelings. Go for a quick stroll around the island, jump in the water for a swim, or bring some treats for a picnic.

Queen Lili'uokalani Park is one of the gems of Hilo Town. This park is known as the biggest edo-style garden outside of Japan! In this serene park you’ll find majestic red bridges over Koi ponds, statues and pagodas, along with stone lanterns lining the pathways.

A few minutes down the road you’ll find Boiling Pots, a chain of overflowing waterfalls that looks like boiling pots of water after it rains.

Pull over at the Hilo public library and take a look at the Naha Stone on the grass outside. In ancient times the Naha Stone was believed to have spiritual powers and that whoever could lift this 5,000 pound rock would become the Hawaiian King. Legend has it that at the age of 30, King Kamehameha successfully lifted the stone and overturned it.

We used 2 tours for the Big Island and were blown away. The Volcanoes National Park tour was more than we ever could have explored on our own. I can't wait to do more tours....here and on the mainland.

Awesome App!

This app made our day at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park so terrific! We learned tons of facts we wouldn’t have known, and the gps worked great to point out relevant sites.

  • Jessica Macdonald

Used their guides for Road to Hana and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park tour, thought they were both great and loved the audio & that they included the history for so much of the tour.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019
  • IrishCueTravel 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles SLO Motion Not all their fault , but if you plan on trying this Attraction be patient! Traffic is a big problem first and foremost. But to add additional unnecessary delays; the bus stops at each site for 15 minutes at a time or More ! I gave up half way through ( 45 minutes) ; and walked back to the starting point in 10 minutes! • michael g 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst hop on/hop off EVER Waited for 40 minutes in the cold rain for a bus that never came... unacceptable. Traffic is so bad that when on a bus the previos day it was barely moving. My advice-get a subway pass and a good travel guide book and do sightseeing on your own! Read more Written October 24, 2018
  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018
  • Bernardo P 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat Trips Moscow, Russia Yesterday, I booked a boat trip with the GetYourGuide.com web page and was totally horrible, didn’t have audio guide as it shows on the picture-Nobody Talk-. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
