Bill Maher comes to CIBC Theatre for two nights, December 6 th  and December 7 th . The show will be taped for a new HBO comedy special.

Unflinching and unflustered

Bill Maher has set the boundaries of political humor on what is just about allowed on American television, yet still manages to push the envelope on a frequent basis. His combination of unflinching honesty and blunt observations have earned him a staggering 23 Emmy nominations and a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Particularly known for his hugely critical views on religion, Maher's humor squares to the left of center, and has more often than not set his crosshairs on the right-wing political movement (particularly the Tea Party), and shows vociferous support for universal health care, same-sex marriage and environmentalism. However, since the events of 9/11, he has supported racial profiling at transport hubs and is a supporter of gun rights.

As well as his long-running television panel show Real Time With Bill Maher, he is still a keen participant on the political comedy circuit, often performing over 60 dates per year.

REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER continues FRIDAY, MAY 10 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/7:00-8:00 p.m. PT) . Allowing Maher to offer his unique perspective on contemporary issues, the show continues with its opening monologue, one-on-one interviews with notable guests, roundtable discussions with panelists, and its signature “New Rules.” The series airs on HBO and is available to stream on Max.

This week features a one-on-one interview with Eric Schlosser , investigative journalist, author of The New York Times Best Seller “Fast Food Nation,” and stars in the documentary film “Food, Inc.” This week’s panel discussion includes Frank Bruni , contributing writer at The New York Times and best-selling author, whose new book is called “The Age of Grievance”; and Douglas Murray , columnist for the New York Post and author of The New York Times best-selling book “The War on the West.”

Top stand-up comedians coming to Phoenix: Kevin Hart, Matt Rife, Bill Burr, Tom Segura

K evin Hart has announced a Phoenix date on his 2024 Acting My Age stand-up comedy tour, which also feature stops in Seattle, Houston, Oakland, Boston and his hometown, Philadelphia.

The tour brings Hart to Arizona Financial Theatre on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024.

The comedian issued a statement saying “Acting my Age is my ninth tour and I wanted to change things up by creating a more intimate environment. This hour is about connecting with the audience and feeding off the crowd's energy and laughter.”

Tom Segura will bring the second leg of his global stand-up comedy tour, Tom Segura: Come Together, to Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024.

Segura’s much-anticipated new hour of comedy kicked off in Honolulu in December and has been selling out stops across Asia and North America, with more than 20 shows added across North America for 2024.

Produced by Live Nation, the tour kicks off with a performance at the Netflix Is a Joke Comedy Festival on May 2 in Los Angeles, making stops in New York, Atlanta, Toronto and more before wrapping in Chicago on June 21.

This is Barber’s third international tour and second U.S. tour. In a press release, she said she’s “excited to tell some jokes, relive some awkward memories and high kick my way across the stage.” Her last tour culminated in the filming of a Netflix special at the Sydney Opera House.

Produced by Live Nation, the 25-city tour kicks off on Thursday, April 11, in Albany, New York, with stops in Washington, DC, Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles, where Rosenthal’s performance at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel is part of the 2024 Netflix Is A Joke Festival.

Hasan Minhaj is promising a brand new show when his 2024 Off With His Head Tour comes to Arizona Financial Theatre in Phoenix on Friday, May 31.

The tour kicks off Friday, Jan. 12, at the Chicago Theatre, with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Nashville, New York, Atlanta and more before wrapping on Saturday, June 1, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Bill Burr joined Bill Maher ‘s “Club Random” podcast and declared cancel culture is over, while Maher once again doubled down in disbelief about how Louis C.K. remains on the outs in Hollywood. C.K. was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017 and admitted to masturbating in front of several female comics a few weeks later. While C.K. has continued to tour and direct his own projects, he largely operates outside of the Hollywood studio system.

I remember whenever that cancel culture got to the point of where it was, ‘I don’t like some of the topics in your stand up act,’ right? That’s when it got weird. Cancel culture … it’s over. No one cares anymore.”

“That’s so not true,” Maher responded. “Either one of us could get canceled in the next two minutes.”

During an April interview with Katie Couric, Maher also railed against cancel culture as it pertains to filmmaker Woody Allen. Maher said “I don’t think he committed that crime” in reference to Dylan Farrow’s molestation allegation against Allen, adding: “There was two police investigations that exonerated him.”

“There’s these actors who won’t work with him anymore and some of them made movies with him are saying, ‘I regret doing that.’ What a bunch of pussies!” Maher said. “First of all, it’s a very improbable crime that they’re accusing him of. Plainly, the other party had motivation and [was] vindictive.”

“Do you think he’s the only guy who likes that? Really?” Maher questioned. “Do you think he’s the first guy who wanted his girlfriend to dress in anklets and baby doll [dresses]? That’s what we grew up on, that’s what we find sexy … that doesn’t make you a pervert.”

Tony-nominee Sarah Paulson: "If this is a dream, I don't wanna wake up"

If you happen into New York's Belasco Theatre in the next few weeks, you might be on familiar ground: a family reunion, at full volume. The play is Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Tony-nominated "Appropriate," and the human volcano on stage is Sarah Paulson.

The play is about siblings coming together after their father dies: secrets get revealed, feelings get hurt, and very little is left unsaid. As the older sister, Toni, Paulson is in her element, creating a character who's both powerful and vulnerable (if a bit unlikeable).

Asked if she does not have a need to be liked, Paulson said, "As a person I'm like, Please like me. Please! I'm begging you! I'm like a puppy dog that way. I mean, of course I wanna be liked. But as an actor, I feel like I don't think about it at all."

And she still can't believe it's her name above the title on the marquee. She says seeing it for the first time was a shock: "I did cry. Because I thought, This is something I never could've imagined . I mean, my mother spent a lot of time taking me to the theater when I was younger, because she was a good mom, who knew that it was really a passion of mine."

Her mom, Catharine Gordon, understood it all. She wanted to write, and when she and Sarah's dad divorced, she moved her two daughters from Florida to New York City in search of a dream. And in what turned out to be the omen of a lifetime, she found work as a waitress at the legendary Sardi's Restaurant on 44th Street, the very epicenter of Broadway.

Sarah wound up at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, where she did her best to stand out. "We had kids whose names were, like, Linnea and Romi and Suna and Soren. And I was like, 'My name is Sarah.'" What to do? "I had everyone call me Saarah ."

And after graduating in 1994 she was really serious about finding work. She skipped college and went to Broadway, and before long she went from on-stage to on-screen, playing everything from a sketch comic opposite Matthew Perry (in "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip"), to an especially cruel slave owner in "12 Years a Slave."

And then, she really got busy. In the series "American Crime Story," she was unforgettable as prosecutor Marcia Clark in "The People vs. O.J. Simpson."  That role launched her to the next level, but she still has yet to watch it … or anything she's done since. "I've never watched 'The People vs. O.J.,'" she said. "Sterling K. Brown is always like, 'Mama, you might wanna check it out.' I'm like, 'Maybe I do.' He's like, 'It's pretty good!' And I just know I will pick it apart."

Paulson's just as clear-eyed about her personal life. She and actor Holland Taylor, who is three decades her senior, have been together since 2015, though at the moment they're working on opposite sides of the country.

"Holland and I live separately," said Paulson. "I don't know if you know this, but Holland is a good bit older than I am. And she lived a lot of her life on her own. And I lived a lot of my life on my own. And I think we both sort of arrived at this relationship sort of recognizing that we both wanted to maintain some of that. And we were both sort of adult enough, I think, to say, 'I don't wanna give this up, and I don't wanna give this up, so let's be together but let's also be separate.' Which is lovely, I have to say."

Do you miss her? "Oh God, yes," said Paulson, adding, "We get along great on the Facetime."

Still, some things happen only in New York, like the event last week when Paulson had her portrait added to the caricatures of immortals that for generations have adorned the walls of Sardi's – the very place where her mom once worked.

At the unveiling Paulson said, "You're also honoring my mother, who was brave enough to move to Manhattan to follow her dream and thereby give me a giant springboard towards my own."

It's hard to describe the feeling in the room, but you can see it all in the face of a former Sardi's employee. How proud is she of her daughter? "Oh, I've been proud of Sarah since the day she was born," said Catharine Gordon. "It feels happy. And it's gonna make me cry, so let's not go any further with that one."

Not only is Sarah Paulson now a Sardi's laureate; she's been nominated for a Tony for her role in "Appropriate."

Gordon said, "Sarah's a fabulous actress, and I know that. And I think she's gonna win!"

"Mom!!" Paulson laughed.

All those seeds that were planted in her early days in New York, now are in full bloom.

"Pinch me, is what I feel," said Paulson. "Pinch me. And if this is a dream, I don't wanna wake up. We all have dreams as children, right? And some of us get to experience them. And I feel like I'm getting to experience it, and it's really special."
