Kalahari Anib Lodge

Botswana is a fascinating world that is defined by its diverse landscape of desert, grasslands, and waterways. Botswana offers an unforgettable safari experience in some of Africa’s most pristine and remote game areas. It’s renowned for its migrating mammals, endangered wild dog and rhino, and some unique species of antelope. The Okavango Delta affords travelers the opportunity to experience unparalleled game viewing in a hot air balloon, motorized boat and mokoro (traditional dugout canoe). From a water wonderland to the sand dunes of the Kalahari, one can view century-old Baobabs, interact with San Bushmen to discover incredible survival secrets, and turn into a land post for a family of habituated meerkats that are scouting the area for predators.

Botswana promises a safari unlike anything else you could have imagined.

The best time to travel to Botswana depends on what you wish to experience.

The cooler, drier winter months from May to October are excellent for game-viewing as herds of animals flock to decreasing water sources and the vegetation thins out. Days are warm; nights can be cold, especially in the desert. This is also the period when floodwaters reach the Delta making for excellent water-based activities such as boating and mokoro rides.

The hot, wet summer months from November to March are good for bird watching when migrants abound. Although game viewing is more challenging, these months draw fewer crowds and have plenty to offer. Many reserves are at their most beautiful, as the vegetation is lush and green, providing an ideal background for wildlife photography. This is also the animals’ calving season, so it’s perfect for seeing gamboling babies.

Chobe National Park

This is an integral part of the Botswana safari experience. Chobe National Park takes its name from the Chobe River which forms the northern boundary of the park and a river safari - or cruise - is one of the best options to explore the area.  It's known for its large herds of elephants and Cape buffalo, which converge along the Chobe Riverfront in the dry months. Lions, antelopes, and hippos inhabit the woods and lagoons around the Linyanti Marsh. The floodable grasslands of the Savuti Marsh attract numerous bird species, plus migrating zebras.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland river delta located in northern Botswana. It's known for its sprawling grassy plains, which flood seasonally, becoming a lush animal habitat. The Moremi Game Reserve occupies the east and central areas of the region. Here, dugout canoes are used to navigate past hippos, elephants and crocodiles. On dry land, game drives allow you to explore the pristine wilderness and experience Africa’s wildlife, including lions, leopards, giraffes and rhinos.

Linyanti, Selinda & Kwando

The vast open plains of northern Botswana teem with predators, elephants and buffalos and with very few lodges in the large private concessions of Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando – the result is an extremely private safari experience. The area is fed by the Kwando and Linyanti Rivers, which converge into the Selinda Spillway.

Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert is a large semi-arid sandy savanna in Southern Africa extending for 900,000 square kilometers (350,000 square miles), covering much of Botswana, parts of Namibia and regions of South Africa. Activities in the Kalahari Desert includes game drives, Kalahari Desert walking safaris, cultural tours and much more.

Tsodilo Hills

The Tsodilo Hills has a special significance to the Bushmen who have been living there for thousands of years. The Tsodilo Hills consist of four large pieces of rock, rising unexpectedly from the dry expanse of desert. The Bushmen referred to the bigger rock as the 'male', the smaller one was known as the 'female', and the smallest one was the 'child'. There is a small Bushmen habitat nearby as well as a village inhabited by the Hambukushu people. The thousands of rock paintings can be found by following different trails leading to over 350 sites.

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

With an area of 3 900 sq. km, Makgadikgadi is situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. It is one of the largest salt flats in the world. Among the many things to do in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park are safari rides, game drives, bird watching, a tour of the Gweta, and bush walks. Wildlife includes eland, lions, zebras, cheetah, gemsbok, springbok, red hartebeest, bushbuck, giraffe, steenbok, elephants and many more.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a vast wildlife preserve in the Kalahari Desert region of Botswana and South Africa, bordering Namibia to the west. It’s characterized by red dunes and dry rivers. Wildlife includes migrating herds of wildebeest and springbok, plus predators like raptors and black-maned Kalahari lions. Various lodges and wilderness camps offer game-viewing drives and guided walks with park rangers.

Known as “the land of the giants”, the 12 000 hectare Tuli Block is a narrow fringe of land at Botswana's eastern border. Tuli Block is set in a landscape of enormous trees on the banks of the Limpopo River, beautiful riverine forests of lime-green fever trees, and rocky landscapes carved from ancient granite and basalt rocks over millions of years. A variety of activities offer an all-rounded experience including fantastic game viewing opportunities, spectacular bird watching, and the famous leopards of Tuli.

Delta & Falls Westbound: Natural Wonders & Wildlife

The included food was a bit disappointing. I am vegetarian and informed the company well in advance however, some evenings I would receive just vegetables whilst other got steaks and vegetables. There were a lot of hidden costs with the trip. Some meals are not included, which is fine, but the itinerary says that some meals are not included to allow us to try local food. The days that we had to buy our own food, there were no local options and the only options were quite expensive and we had no choice but to buy it. Another hidden cost was the compulsory 'tip' for camping in the delta, the guide called this a tip when in fact it was just the cost of the transport & overnight stay, and it was not listed on the itinerary. Our driver Mike was great, he was welcoming and friendly and gave us lots of local information. Our guide Shadwell was nice but did the bare minimum, he was less sociable than Mike and could be rude at times. The tour/ itinerary was more structured than advertised. Several mornings we were gotten up very early to drive to a new location but when we arrived we'd sit around with nothing to do for hours. The set tasks that everyone had to do felt like we were in school, everyone on the trip is an adult and can and should volunteer to help. Overall we enjoyed the trip, we liked the lando, camping and activities, but we don't feel we got great value for money and would be hesitant to choose another tour.

Botswana Safari Packages

Botswana Safari Packages

Botswana is by far one of the best countries in Africa that is rich in wildlife, desert plains and vast wilderness that is unspoilt and untouched by man. It offers the most exciting Botswana Safari Packages in the world both land and water safaris.

Botswana is such a unique country with incredible game viewing opportunities with everything from lions, cheetahs, wilder beats, giraffes, sables, antelopes and so much more. In fact, it is commonly referred to as the “Land of the Giants” because of its large herds of elephants that roam freely throughout the country and the large ancient baobab trees.

Game drives, like any other safari on the African continent, are one of the most exciting aspects of Botswana Safaris . Walking safaris, on the other hand, are becoming increasingly popular. The good thing is that your safaris will be tailor made to suit your needs and budget. You can stay in a ridiculously luxurious safari lodge or keep it simple with a cosy tented camp. That is where the beauty of a Botswana Safari lies.

Botswana Safari Packages

All the nature lovers gather up, this is something you surely wouldn’t want to miss. Botswana prides itself on having vast plains of wilderness and wildlife that can be enjoyed in placidity and calmness without the presence of humans.

The country praises itself for its exclusivity and tries by all means to preserve its nature and wildlife in a way that ensures no human interference so that you can enjoy everything in its natural form. You can expect to see a high population of big cats, like the lions and cheetahs and even packs of hyenas throughout the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta . Expect to see birds swooping above the tall trees, spectacular views of the desert valley, salt pans to dried-up rivers beds all rich in fossilised plants and minute ancient animal species.

Best Places To Go On A Safari In Botswana

Botswana is one of the most unique places among African Safari Destinations . Along with abundant wildlife and, of course, the Big Five, the country's diversity of landscapes distinguishes it and sets it above the rest.

Botswana is a virtually unexplored wilderness where adventurous and travellers at large can enjoy safaris with a sense of exclusivity. So, if you're thinking about going on a Safari in Botswana , here are our best locations to go.

Along the Chobe River is where you'll find the Chobe National Park . Some of Southern Africa's most incredible opportunities for game viewing may be found in this park. You have a choice of staying in a tented camp, houseboat, or opulent lodge at the Chobe National Park.

There are twice-daily wildlife drives (in the morning and in the afternoon), river cruises, and eating in the golden grasslands available at Chobe National Park. You will have a safari unlike any other in this park; therefore it is certainly worth the trip.

Located on the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve was one of the first wilderness areas to be protected. You have come to the right place if you're hoping to go on a luxurious safari in Botswana.

There are deals on some of the hotels at the Moremi Game Reserve if you stay for three nights or longer, so visiting the reserve won’t have to break the budget. Tented camps and luxurious lodges with private plunge pools are both available for accommodation in this area. With a genuinely authentic Botswana Safari Experience , visit the Moremi Game Reserve and discover the Okavango delta in all its splendour.

In the Okavango Delta along the banks of a river, you will find the beautiful Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge . This is one of the few lodges in the country where you can do a guided walk with a travel specialist.

There are three daily game drives from which you can choose, morning, afternoon, and early evening. Unfortunately there are no night drives that are available at this particular lodge. You can expect to see elephants, semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope and many more at this top-class lodge on the Okavango Delta.

If you are looking to get away from all the hustle and bustle then consider the Kalahari. The Kalahari Desert is a semi-arid wilderness filled with sprawling plains that extend across southern Africa. It stands to this day as one of the world’s least inhabited areas and the only people found here are the San Bushmen.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve experiences shocking landscape transformations which are quite the spectacle due to the rains. Temporary lakes are formed in the desert which draws animals into the area like the legendary black-maned lions and cheetahs as well as the large herds of impala, Oryx and zebra.

The Makgadikgadi Pans offer a whole other different experience. Millions of years ago there was a large lake that covered the Kalahari, and today the salt pans that remain are considered the largest in the world.

The pans give you the widespread view of salt as it glistens and shimmers in the sun. The area has much history to it from Stone Age ruins, prehistoric beaches, fossils and ancient baobab trees. The large vultures in the area add just a touch of mystery. The wildlife is nomadic and you get to see rare desert animals such as the aardvark, aardwolf, brown hyenas and meerkats. Hippos are also common in the shallow pools and one of the real shows is from the pink swathes of flamingos that fill the area as the rains come.

Various Botswana Safaris For Travellers

Botswana Safari Packages

There are so many ways in which you can enjoy a Botswana Safari . There are different Botswana Safari Packages available depending on what you want out of your safari, below are some of the best safari packages you can plan and choose from.

The Classic Botswana Safaris is the traditional style of "being on safari”, it is simple and offers more of a bush experience. It is one of the most affordable safaris and can be greatly recommended for those on their first time in Botswana.

Classic Botswana Safari Packages are among the most cost-effective Botswana safari options. You'll be staying in comfortable tented camps with en-suite bathrooms. These permanent tents are set on raised wooden decks and provide a more intimate experience than our Luxury Safari Packages while still providing all of the amenities of home.

As the name already gives it away, this is a safari that you can enjoy luxuriously. Luxury Botswana Safari Packages allow you to enjoy the wilderness in style while encountering unforgettable wildlife.

Our premium Botswana Safari Packages provide a more elegant safari experience. The camps are more luxuriously finished and provide more safari activities. These Luxury Botswana Safari Packages take you to distant and unexplored areas, allowing you to enjoy your safari in fashion.

Luxury Botswana Safari Lodges offer an extravagant base with all the creature comforts and amenities you'd expect from a five-star establishment. Following an exciting day on safari, you will return to a luxurious suite to relax and take in the beauty of the surrounding wilderness. While dining under the stars, you can enjoy superb cuisine as well as fine wines.

The Botswana Honeymoon Safaris offer some of Botswana's finest and romantic safari lodges accompanied by an unforgettable wilderness experience that suits every style and taste. You get to enjoy a romantic honeymoon holiday in the pristine wilderness away from the hustle and bustle of town where it’s peaceful. This is a good way to relax or perhaps go on a river cruise, or enjoy an intimate candlelight dinner under the bright African stars.

This Chobe River Houseboat Safari Package is the ideal way to begin or end your Botswana vacation. You have the ultimate chance to enjoy a leisurely cruise along the Chobe River as you witness the beauty of the ever-changing landscapes. You can see elephant herds, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of other Botswana wildlife as you cruise along.

You can catch-and-release tiger and bream as you enjoy fishing on the Chobe. There is also the incredible opportunity for bird watching in the early mornings as you enjoy the sunrise. You can also enjoy cultural village walks on Impalila Island. While lying in bed on your well-deserved Botswana vacation, you will be enthralled by night sounds such as the lapping of water and the call of nocturnal creatures.

Recommended Botswana Safaris Tours

Botswana Safari Packages

Many people when they hear of a safari tour, they only think of the classic game drive on a 4x4 vehicle which is very nice but did you know there’s actually a lot of ways in which you can enjoy your safari and below we’ve listed some of them for you.

Walking Safaris In Botswana provide a distinct way to discover the Okavango Delta for those seeking an intimate experience. While walking safaris are permitted at most camps outside of National Parks and Game Reserves, a few operators partake in Botswana Walking Safaris . These specialised programs, which take place in genuine safari camps, offer a unique perspective of the delta and are ideal for families or small groups of friends. Walking in the wilderness is part of a 'true' safari experience.

Self-Drive Safaris In Botswana through wide and complex landscapes are an unmatched experience, especially when combined with a breath-taking wildlife spectacle. From the rough Kalahari Desert and the enormous Makgadikgadi salt pans to the riverbanks of Chobe National Park, nature lovers will be spoiled for choice.

Botswana's national parks have excellent protection. They only allow for a limited number of lodges, tented camps, and campsites. Because there is a high demand for a limited number of properties, you must book early to safeguard your ideal properties – we recommend booking a year in advance if possible. Prepare to be amazed, whether you're camping under the stars in your vehicle or trying to explore the Okavango Delta's floodplains.

One of the most recommended ways to enjoy a safari is by going on a balloon safari. You will get to see breath-taking views of the beautiful Botswana landscapes and beyond from up above where the view is to die for. The experience is like no other and you get to experience Botswana in a totally unique way.

This is a unique and interesting safari that brings thrills across your spine. It takes you to see the wild not by car, not in a balloon or walking but on horseback. Follow animal trails and tracks in a way that is more adventures. Move across streams and straddle through the African plains with the wind on your face on a riding safari.

In comparison to other African nations, Botswana has a consistent income due to its on-going GDP growth. The nation devotes a lot of effort to ensuring that tourists have an enjoyable and economical Botswana Safari Holiday . The Botswana Safari Cost will depend on a variety of variables.

The Seasons Have the Most Influence on Botswana Safari Package Prices. Peak season lasts from April through October, during the dry seasons. Because of the sparse vegetation and the tendency of wild animals to congregate in big numbers around water sources during these periods, it is simpler to identify huge game animals (like an elephant). From November to March are the wet season and also the hottest time which involves less game viewing but more abundant bird life.

Safari Package Prices also depend on what kind of safari you choose, is it a classic safari? Is it a luxury safari or a honeymoon safari? Your needs and what kind of safari you want will ultimately determine whether or not you will be spending a little extra or not on your trip.

How Long Should You Stay On A Botswana Safaris ?

For the ultimate Botswana Safaris we think that five to ten days is the ideal amount of time to fully enjoy and experience what the country has to offer. A brief visit of about 2 days might be overall expensive when we include flights and other expenses. The more days you spend the more you get to see, do and the more you appreciate. The advantage is, it allows you to visit more than one Game Park or reserve. It allows you to even see other nearby places as well.

You can plan your safari and include a three-night stay in the Chobe area, followed by five days of exploring the Okavango Delta or even squeeze in some time to go to Moremi Game Reserve. Some visitors can spend less time in Botswana and combine their safari with visits to neighbouring countries like Namibia, South Africa, or Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Botswana is a beautiful country to explore and enjoy the wonders of Africa, let us be your guide as Falcon Safaris to your best adventure yet.

Our Travelers Say

Icon

We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more. We visited the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, the Victoria Falls and a number of national parks in both countries. Rhino tracking was a real adventure! We had tremendous further game drives and saw very many animals - we did the Big Five. We had much more activities than planned and enjoyed very much.We strongly recommend Falcon Safaris to everyone planning a trip to Southern Africa and East Africa.

Wonderful trip to Zimbabwe and Botswana with excellent organization and very competent guides

Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.

Exceptional!

We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana. Our lodgings at River View Lodge were just as described- very comfortable and excellent food. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful. If I had to do it again I would arrange a morning boat ride as well. We only did the sunset boat rides and they were the high point of our entire trip- we saw so many animals and our guide was very knowledgeable. Just a great experience. Our lodgings at Oddball's Enclave was rustic and we loved it. So great to disconnect from the world for a bit. Leo, our guide, was the best - got us out and about, saw fantastic wildlife and got back to camp safely each time. Doc manages the camp so well. This whole trip was planned and organized by Falcon Safaris and we could not have been happier.

Fabulous, well planned trip

Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure. I do realize its not within your controle but with limit alternatives and a group of 14 people it becomes an issue to find alternative accomodation if the booking was cancelled.

Highlights of a Safari to Botswana

A Botswana safari package offers travellers the opportunity to experience a magical African adventure on a grand scale as this landlocked country is home to a variety of natural wonders, endless landscapes and iconic species. From the vast expanse of the Kalahari and the magnitude of the Okavango Delta to the wildlife wonders of Chobe, Moremi, and Khwai River, this wonderful part of the world is inviting discovery.

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is an ecological wonder of meandering waterways surrounded by the Kalahari. Both of these distinct ecosystems in Botswana support a diverse array of plant and animal life. Quilted with wetlands, forests, floodplains and open grassland, Moremi Game Reserve is one of Africa’s most beautiful conservation areas and a perfect stop on your Botswana safari.

Chobe National Park is known as ‘the Land of Giants’ due to its large elephant population. In between these two wildlife havens, lies the Khwai River, a scenic pearl teaming with an abundance of species.

Dotting the rest of the landscape, are breathtaking spots like Mashatu Game Reserve with its impressive baobabs, the Tuli Block where the rare black-maned lions are a key attraction, Linyanti Game Reserve which is one of the best places to see wild dogs, and the Caprivi that overflows with the life-affirming waters of the Linyanti, Chobe, Cuando and Zambezi Rivers.

Public transport in Botswana is geared towards the needs of the local populace and is confined to main roads between major population centres. Although cheap and reliable, it is of little use to the traveller as most of Botswana’s tourist attractions lie off the beaten track.

Driving off the main roads in Botswana is only recommended to expects in 4×4 vehicles, that are equipped correctly. Most lodges offer transfers or they can be arranged.

There are major airports in Maun, Kasane and Gaborone, while smaller charter flights are used to get to the other top attractions and camps.

Botswana’s currency is Pula (which means ‘rain’ in Setswana). It is divided into 100 thebe (which means ‘shield’ in Setswana). Travellers’ cheques and foreign currency may be changed at banks, bureaux de change and authorised hotels.

USD, Euros, British Pound and the South African Rand are the most easily convertible currencies (and accepted by some establishments – but, generally, then an inflated rate of exchange will be applied).

Seven main commercial banks, as well as a number of foreign exchange bureaux, operate in Botswana. Operating hours are Monday to Friday 08h30 to 15h30 and Saturday 08h30 to 10h45.

Full banking services are available in major towns, although ATMs are sprouting up all over the country. Most credit cards are accepted at hotels and restaurants. Cultural sites and community art and craft outlets usually only accept cash.

Safari lodges and camps serve international-style cuisine, generally of an extremely high standard, along with local beer and imported wine and spirits. Good restaurants and bars can be found in main towns, often within hotels. Elsewhere, food is more basic: millet and sorghum porridge are the local staples.

Tap water is considered safe to drink, although outside main cities and towns, visitors are advised to check first and sterilise water if in any doubt. Bottled water is available in most lodges. Milk is pasteurised, and dairy products, local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables are generally safe.

According to our Botswana travel advice in 2022, a discretionary ten percent tip is typical for restaurant bills. In many places, a service charge is automatically added. It is customary to tip the game guide and lodge staff while on safari.

Botswana’s climatic pattern is typical of southern Africa, although its rainfall is less than countries further east. The rains in Botswana come mostly between December and March when average minimum temperatures are in the low 20°s. Some days will be bright and sunny, some will have afternoon thunderstorms, and some will just be grey.

April and May in Botswana are generally lovely, with the sky clear and the landscape green. Night temperatures start to drop during these months, especially in the Kalahari. Note that places in and around the Okavango tend to have less extreme, more moderate temperatures than the drier areas of the Kalahari.

From June to August the night-time temperatures in drier areas can be close to freezing, but it warms up rapidly during the day when the sky is usually clear and blue. It’s now very much ‘peak season’ for most safari areas: the land is dry in most areas so the animals congregate around the few available water sources.

This continues into September and October, when temperatures climb again, drying the landscapes and concentrating the game even more. This is the best time for big game safaris – although October can feel very hot, with maximum temperatures sometimes approaching 40°C.

November is difficult to predict, as it can sometimes be a continuation of October’s heat, whilst sometimes it’s cooled by the first rains; it’s always an interesting month.

In summer, lightweight, light-coloured cotton is preferable. Avoid synthetic materials and black clothing, as they increase perspiration and discomfort. In winter, wear trousers, long sleeve shirts/blouses and jerseys. From May-August, night temperatures can fall below zero degrees celsius, so warm jerseys and jackets are vital, especially on morning and evening game drives. Garments of neutral colours that blend with the bush and forest are advisable for safaris and game viewing. Bring a light jacket and/or jersey for unexpected temperature changes or rain. Closed, comfortable walking shoes are a must in all seasons. Special attention should be given to protection from the sun. Bring a sunhat, good quality sunscreen, sun lotion and polarised sunglasses. Wide-brimmed sun hats are essential.

Some hotels, lodges and guest houses offer internet access or WiFi (free or paid), and there are internet cafes in Gaborone and Maun. Internet access in more remote rural areas is often hard to come by.

Power plugs and electrical sockets (outlets) in Botswana are type D, G, and M.If your appliance’s plug doesn’t match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Travel plug adapters simply change the shape of your appliance’s plug to match whatever type of socket you need to plug into.

Electrical sockets (outlets) in Botswana usually supply electricity at between 220 and 240 volts AC. If you’re plugging in an appliance that was built for 220-240 volt electrical input, or an appliance that is compatible with multiple voltages, then an adapter is all you need. But travel plug adapters do not change the voltage, so the electricity coming through the adapter will still be the same 220-240 volts the socket is supplying. If you need to use appliances that are not compatible with 220-240 volt electrical input, you will need a voltage converter.

The best time for your Botswana safari will depend on your preferred activities or special interests. The country is regarded as a destination that can be visited throughout the year, with three main seasons characterised by distinct weather patterns.

Green Season: November to March Shoulder Season: April to May Dry Season (Peak): June to October

Green Season in Botswana

The green safari season in Botswana, which is the summer season, stretches from November to March, with hot and humid weather as well as countless thunderstorms at the order of the day. These thunderstorms are not just a spectacular Botswana experience but are life-giving and transform the dry landscape into a green oasis, teeming with new life. For avid birders, there is no better time to travel than during the Botswana green season. Birders will delight in the myriad of breeding pairs and migratory species seeking these greener pastures. If you have always wanted to glide through the Botswana delta waterways in a Mokoro, the best time to book your Botswana safari is during the green season in Botswana.

Shoulder Season in Botswana

Opt for a mid-season break to Botswana between April and May if you prefer milder daytime and cooler nighttime temperatures. During autumn, the rains have largely dissipated, driving the wildlife to other water sources and making game viewing an adventurous affair.

Dry Season in Botswana

For the ultimate wildlife experience, schedule your Botswana holiday safari for the dry season between June and October. The Botswana bush has thinned out extensively, making for exceptional game viewing and easy spotting of iconic species like elephants, buffalo and also predators like lions and wild dogs. The impressive Okavango River is in full flood and animals congregate in great numbers, a photographers dream on a Botswana safari holiday of a lifetime

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Johannesburg! You’ll be met at the door of your aircraft with your name on a paging board and assisted through immigration, baggage collection, and customs. Your journey continues with a shared transfer flight from the lodge to Kasane Airport. Upon your arrival, your driver will transfer you to your luxurious accommodations at Chobe Game Lodge, the only safari lodge situated within Chobe National Park. Located directly on the game rich Chobe River, the lodge boasts unhindered views of the river and beyond, to the Caprivi floodplains of Namibia. Chobe Game Lodge

Day 2 Today is yours for the taking. Chobe National Park is one of the richest game reserves in Africa and is known for its magnificent elephant population. Take advantage of the lodge’s unlimited land- and water-based game viewing activities to see these wonderful creatures for yourself. Later, relax in your spacious suite and lounge deck overlooking your beautiful natural surroundings. Chobe Game Lodge

Day 3 After breakfast, you will be transferred the Kasane Airport for your flight to Savute. Stretching from the Linyanti River all the way to Savute Marsh, the winding waterways of the Savute Channel have pumped life into the western section of Chobe National Park for many thousands of generations. Sink into one of the numerous comfortable leather, wood or wicker sofas in the lounge – and library – or sip a cocktail in the stylish bar. All these facilities are situated in a beautiful two-storey thatch-and-timber main building. Savute Safari Lodge offers a shaded viewing deck, an al fresco dining area and swimming pool with spectacular pool loungers – ideal for watching the varied wildlife – including the resident Elephants – as they make their way to the Channel to drink, bathe and play. Savute Safari Lodg e

Day 4 Today you are off to witness of the magic of the local wildlife. Activities are organised around game drives throughout the Savute area in open 4×4 safari vehicles. You will incorporate a visit to the Savute Marsh to give you a chance to see the historic presence of the Savute Channel at the marsh against a backdrop of teeming wildlife. You can also enjoy a visit to the ancient San rock paintings at Gubatsa Hills – a small hilly outcrop which forms a prominent landmark in the otherwise flat landscape. Savute Safari Lodge

Day 5 Time to move to your next stop in Botswana. Enjoy a short bush plane flight to the Moremi area of the Okavango Delta. Camp Moremi has a well-deserved legacy in the Botswana tourism industry for being able to deliver the classic African safari experience. Completely rebuilt in 2018 as a modern luxury safari lodge, Camp Moremi is located within the world-renowned Moremi Game Reserve. Camp Moremi’s communal areas include a sunken bar, masterfully built around a large termite mound and ebony tree, an expansive lounge area with a beautiful brass and soft finishes, leading towards an extended library and private deck.  Camp Moremi

Days 6-7 Your activities include a choice of morning and afternoon game drives throughout the many different ecosystems that the Moremi Game Reserve has to offer or the possibility to explore the Xakanaxa Lagoon and its surrounding channels by boat. This blend of activities allows for access to incredible landscapes, impressive wildlife as well as the opportunity to enjoy the picturesque waters of the Okavango Delta. Camp Moremi

Day 8 And you are on the move again, this time to a beautiful private island, Nxamaseri Island. The lodge is a unique African experience on the permanent waters of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. A small, exclusive lodge, it is one of the oldest in the Okavango Delta. The distinct style of Nxamaseri Island Lodge showcases the beauty of the permanent swamp that is it’s home and subtly expresses the rich vibrance of the indigenous people. Nxamaseri Island Lodge is one of the oldest camps in the Okavango Delta. It was established in the early 1980s by PJ and Barney Bestelink. PJ, an experienced guide, spent months exploring the permanent water channels of the delta in search of a perfect location for his home and camp. He favoured the Nxamaseri Channel for its beauty and seclusion, and eventually elected to build his lodge on a large shady island hidden in the Nxamaseri waterways. Locally inspired, Nxamaseri Island Lodge celebrates the colourful vibrance of the Botswana culture. Enjoy incredible views of the panhandle from the lounge area which has comfortable seating and plenty of good books to browse. Nxamaseri Island Lodge

Day 9 Today, you can choose a guided walk on a nearby island, accessed by boat or mokoro, giving you the opportunity to experience the intimacy and piece of unspoiled Africa. Exploring the islands on foot is an effective way of relaxing and finding the more timid, forest-dwelling birds. Or you can enjoy a safari by mokoro (dug-out canoe). There is no better way to experience the stillness and beauty of the Okavango Delta than to be poled on the water silently, gliding just inches above the crystal clear surface, eye-level with dragon flies, reed frogs and water lilies and within touching distance of the myriad of colourful fish that swim just below the surface. Or simply relax and take in the beautiful island. Nxamaseri Island Lodge

Day 10 Next, board your onward flight to your wonderful accommodations at Leroo La Tau. Built on cliffs over 10 meters high, Leroo La Tau offers unsurpassed views of the Boteti River and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Leroo La Tau is situated on the western bank of the Boteti River, which forms the boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The Boteti River provides a lifeline for the wildlife which inhabit the arid national park and is a critical link in the annual zebra migration. Botswana Budget Safari Tours

Finding a Botswana budget safari can be a challenge. This is a country that has very much aimed its tours, or safari pitch, at a high-end market. But don’t let that put you off. Botswana is a fabulous destination for a wildlife trip. A number of operators offer budget safari packages that can take you deep into some of the best wildlife-viewing country in southern Africa. The Okavango Delta is a possibility, particularly in the Moremi Game Reserve or in the west, although the Delta’s northern reaches are dominated by private, luxury concessions. Chobe National Park, including the Savuti region, is a highlight, as are the options within the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Tuli Block.

6 Questions About Botswana Budget Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

botswana safari packages

Why should I choose Botswana for a budget trip?

“Botswana is a brilliant choice for a budget safari because the wildlife is world-class, and facilities such as budget accommodation or safari campsites are rarely crowded. Low visitor numbers and the relatively small market for budget safaris mean that once you get beyond the larger towns, a sense of wilderness is easily found. Much of this wilderness is accessible to those on a budget holiday. It’s actually far better here than in other countries where budget accommodation and campsites can be crowded, and multiple vehicles gather around wildlife sightings. Botswana also has one of the most professional safari industries in Africa, and these high standards very much include budget operators. Once you’re here, expect big cats, elephants and abundant birdlife.”

What is included in a Botswana budget safari?

“Meals, accommodation and transport are usually included in the cost of your budget safari in Botswana. Depending on the operator, you may be expected to help in setting up the tents each night. And to participate in the more mundane aspects of camp life: cooking, washing up, and gathering firewood. Most safaris in Botswana begin and end in one of the gateway towns for the parks and protected reserves. For example, Maun (for Moremi and the Okavango Delta), Kasane (for Chobe National Park) and Gweta (for the Makgadikgadi Pans and Central Kalahari Game Reserve) all have simple but atmospheric budget lodgings. Beyond the towns, travel will be by a mixture of 4x4 and boat. The ‘mokoro’ (wooden dugout canoe) is a classic Delta experience that is at once cheap and environmentally friendly. It enables you to get a feel for the intricate tangle of waterways that define the Delta at the speed of a slow-moving river. Always ask your operator what is included and what will be expected of you out in the bush, before making your final reservation.”

What are the pros and cons of a self-drive budget safari?

“Taking a self-drive budget safari has the advantage of including almost all of your expenses in one fee. Once your vehicle is paid for, campsite fees and food are both extremely cheap in Botswana. Petrol can, however, be expensive, as can the overall cost of rental vehicles. Whether it works out to be more expensive to take a self-drive safari, or go on an organized budget safari, will depend on how many of you are in the vehicle. These pros and cons can be added to the more general advantages of the self-drive safari in Botswana. The most obvious of these is the freedom it gives. Unlike on an organized tour, you decide how long you stay at each wildlife sighting. You also decide where to go and when. However, many campsites are so popular that you’ll need to reserve these sites through your operator well in advance of your visit. While it can be a little nerve-wracking to set out alone into the bush, trails are generally easy to follow and excellent GPS programs help to guide your way. You’re also never too far from help if you take the necessary precaution of carrying a satellite phone. The result is a deep-Africa experience that simply cannot be replicated by any other means.”

Can you describe a typical day on a Botswana budget safari?

“A typical day on a budget safari involves a mix of helping out around camp and being out on the trails looking for wildlife. On a budget safari, you’re usually expected to help pack up the campsite in the morning and generally help to keep the camp clean. If you’re moving on to a new campsite, this may mean packing up the tents, as well as helping with the breakfast and washing up. If you’re remaining at the same campsite for a number of days, breakfast and daily cleaning-up duties may happen after you return from an early morning game drive. If you are expected to help with camp chores, you will assist in setting up camp upon arrival at each new campsite. This may include everything from putting up tents to preparing meals. Typically, lunch on a budget safari is a simple affair, a light meal or picnic taken in the shade. Activities during the heat of the day vary from one budget safari to the next. Some days you’ll rest in camp while at other times you’ll be out looking for wildlife, taking advantage of every minute out on safari. Sometimes you’ll be traveling from one campsite to the next, usually with some wildlife viewing en route. Dinner is usually the main meal of the day, followed by stories and (perhaps) singing around the campfire until everyone drifts off to bed.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“There are a few budget lodges and permanent tented camps scattered throughout the country’s north. Most often your accommodation will consist of a simple canvas tent with bedding usually provided. Some of these are simple dome tents that you take with you from one site to another. Other tents have a semi-permanent location on elevated wooden platforms that serve as bases for exploring the surrounding area for a few days. Larger, and generally more expensive, are the safari tents that, as a minimum, consist of canvas floors, beds and either en suite toilets or a nearby shared ablutions tent or block with showers. The fancier of these tents might include a desk, wooden chest and shaded deck at the front, but most of these are associated with an increase in price.”

How much will this safari cost?

“Per-person per-day prices for a cheap Botswana safari start at around US$165. This is based on a twin-share safari package. Individual or solo travelers can expect their costs to start at around US$220 to US$275, once the single supplement is added. Prices are, of course, highly variable, with rates depending on, for example, the number of people in a traveling party, the type of accommodation and the season. Transport can be another varying factor. The isolation of many Delta camps means that if you have to fly into your location in the Delta, costs rise significantly. Always ask if any flights are included in the cost.”

This 7-night Safari in Botswana Is All About Wildlife, Water, and Sustainability — Here's What It Was Like to Visit

The Okavango Delta creates a safari landscape like no other.

botswana safari packages

Courtesy of Wilderness Safaris

Less than an hour after landing at a remote airstrip, we're having sundowners en route to the lodge. A troop of dozens — perhaps a hundred — baboons returns to the trees around us to roost for the night. A nosy kudu slowly circles our makeshift camp. Chatty squirrels chitter away in the branches above our heads. We sip our gin and tonics and watch as the Okavango Delta settles into dusk. So it goes on safari in Botswana.

We hop back into the jeep and make for Vumbura Plains, our home for the next few nights, passing elephants under trees and lechwe antelope spread across the flooded plains. But interestingly, it's not the wildlife that captivates me on the ride. It's the water.

The Okavango Delta is a sprawling inland delta, and each winter, floodwaters from the Okavango River inundate some three million acres of grassland and desert. It creates a vast waterscape that not only draws human visitors like me but plenty of animal ones, too. So as we're driving to the lodge, my heart stops as the road disappears into the waters — and I hold my breath as we plunge right in. "You might want to pick up that bag," our Wilderness guide Dave Luck says to me as the water gurgles beneath the floor of the jeep, seeping in through the crevices.

The floodwaters aren't very deep, though, and the local guides know where the roads twist and turn, even if I can't see anything through the murk. It's a surreal feeling to be navigating these waters in a jeep rather than on a boat.

We arrive at Vumbura Plains , and there's plenty more water to be found here. The camp was newly rebuilt in 2022 and now has a series of 14 open-air suites connected by elevated wooden walkways. I sit in my sunken living room adorned with water-lily motifs, and even though it's after dark, I can hear wildlife wading through the water all around me.

The water remains a source of intrigue for me during our stay at Vumbura Plains, perhaps even more so as we take to the skies in a helicopter. From our aerial vantage point, I can see just how expansive the floodwaters are — and how filled they are with wildlife. Water-loving hippos and crocodiles are spread across the saturated plains, while elephants march single-file through the reeds, creating meandering pathways visible from the air.

Our next adventure takes us away from the floods, in the Linyanti Concession, where the eight-room DumaTau camp becomes our next home. There is water here, too, as the lodge sits on a riverfront that's very popular with elephants. In fact, one waltzes right past my tented suite as I'm reclining for an afternoon nap.

On one of our game drives across the dry terrain, we see dozens of vultures perched on every tree within eyesight. And that means one thing: dinner is served. (Not ours, of course, but lions'.)

As we make our way through the tall, rustling grass, we spot a few lounging lionesses and their playful cubs. Then the smell hits us: it's a slightly putrid buffalo, one that the lions have been feasting on for some time. One lioness is polishing off its exposed ribs, her strong teeth tearing into the flesh and peeling it straight off the bone. Dave hands me a small tin filled with a fragrant salve. "For the smell," he notes, rubbing some under his nose. The trick works wonders, and we continue our observations of the feast.

You might think such a sight (and odor) might deter us from our own dinner back at DumaTau, but the cuisine at this camp is too delectable to pass up. The food system, as the printed menu tells me, is responsible for some 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. So Wilderness designs "mindful menus" here, incorporating locally sourced, sustainable ingredients into its dishes to reduce its "foodprint." What's more, food waste is minimized by the kitchen's upcycling team, which turns scraps into preserves, pickles, and stocks. Nothing goes to waste in nature, and so it shall be at Wilderness camps, too.

Our final leg of the safari takes us back to the Okavango Delta, this time to the camp Jao. And here, I'm awestruck at the architecture. Jao feels like a movie set. It's a series of striking, modern tree houses that blend natural elements with high design and sustainable engineering. (The thatch, for instance, is actually made from recycled plastic.)

The room that really takes my breath away is the double-height library and wine room, at the center of which is a giraffe skeleton. Jao is equal parts futuristic and classic safari, and it's certainly a feast for the eyes.

We return to watery adventures in the delta, but not in jeeps. One afternoon, we take a more traditional form of transportation: a hand-carved mokoro canoe. Skilled gondoliers use long poles to propel us through the floodwaters, pausing at points to teach us about the flora of the region. We make necklaces out of water lilies and wear them proudly as we glide through the reeds.

On our last night in Botswana, the staff prepares us a beautiful sundowner send-off — a massive spread arranged on my suite's terrace surrounding a fire pit. As we watch the light fade over the water, we once more sip on our gin and tonics, the sights and sounds of our trip shining brightly in our memories.

Testimonials

Everything was put together beautifully and we saw so many animals. Hippos and elephants (safely) right outside our room...heard them at night from our tent.

We visited three camps in Botswana and Gomoti Plains was our favorite. The setting is beautiful, the activities are varied (game drives, mokoro canoeing, motorboat and helicopter ride.

The tent exceeded our expectations. The view from the tent was exquisite. We watched hippos and elephants in the river right from the comfort of our sitting area out of front.

Why Travel to Botswana ? by Luke Hardiman

Botswana is one of Africa’s top game viewing destinations and with good reason given its expansive game parks, high concentration of game and unspoilt natural wonders. An African success story, Botswana is a politically and economically stable country adding to its allure as an ideal destination for the African safari adventure of a lifetime.

Nearly three-quarters of this prosperous landlocked country is covered by the Kalahari Desert, into which the Okavango River flows in the north forming the world largest inland delta, the lush Okavango Delta.

Botswana owes its strong economic position to its diamond industry, service sector, tourism and manufacturing. The major tourist attraction in Botswana is its game parks, which are home to some of the most pristine game reserves in Africa. This country of contrasting landscapes, from desert to delta and woodlands, covers an area of 600 370 sq km. The sheer size of Botswana, about the size of France, has resulted in large areas of land not having roads and therefore remaining unspoilt by mass tourism. The game reserves of Botswana allow for secluded safari experiences, where you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle.

Botswana Travel Highlights

The okavango delta - botswana's jewel.

The Okavango Delta is a lush oasis of permanent and seasonal waterways and lagoons inhabited by an abundance of birds and other wildlife, such as hippos, giraffes, elephants, buffalo and crocodiles. Other wildlife includes wildebeest, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena rhinoceros, zebra and various antelope species. The delta also boasts one of Africa’s highest-density populations of the endangered African Wild Dog. The Okavango Delta is home to more than 400 bird species among them the Crested Crane, Hammerkop, African Fish Eagle, Sacred Ibid and ostrich.

The winding channels of this unique delta are best explored by traditional dug-out canoes, known as Mokoros. A popular activity is a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta water system, which can be easily arranged. The wildlife-rich gem of Botswana, the Okavango Delta is a must-see visual feast consisting of crystal clear waterways dotted with remote islands of thick vegetation.

Moremi Game Reserve - Beautiful Wilderness Area

Moremi, one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in the world, covers much of the eastern side of the Okavango Delta. This game reserve consists of a wide variety of habitats that support one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of wildlife including one of the largest populations of the endangered wild dogs in Africa. The park offers stark contrasts in its landscapes consisting of permanent waters, thick mopane woodlands and dry floodplains. Chiefs Island and the Moremi Tongue are the two most prominent land features lying within the waterways of Moremi.

The Moremi Game Reserve is teeming with wildlife, including lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and jackal, as well as buffalo and giraffe. Antelopes such as impala and red lechwe can also be found in Moremi and an African Wild Dog research project is centred in the park. Almost 500 bird species can be found in the reserve, ranging from forest to water birds, with the lagoons being excellent sites for bird watching. In addition to the wide variety of lush and watery ecosystems, Moremi also offers superb 4x4 game viewing on its open savannahs.

Chobe National Park – Elephant Country

Chobe National Park, considered the most diverse Botswana safari park is famous for its large population of African elephants, boasting the highest concentration of African elephants in the world.

The park stretches from the Chobe River to the Savute Channel and onto the borders of Moremi Game Reserve on the Okavango Delta, covering about 10 566 sq km’s. Botswana’s first national park, Chobe is home to huge herds of buffalo and zebras, as well as a variety of antelopes and predators. Lion, leopard, lechwe, Chobe bushbuck, hyena and cheetah are also found in Chobe National Park. Chobe is also an excellent birding destination with about 350 bird species, including Pel's Fishing Owl and the African Skimmer.

The park can be divided into three ecosystems, namely the Serondela area in the northeast on the Chobe Riverfront; the Savuti Marsh area in the west and the Linyanti Marsh in the north-west the hot dry hinterland lying between the Linyanti and Savuti Marshes. These areas differ in vegetation and water availability attracting different wildlife species, which allows for different game viewing opportunities from season to season as well as between the different sections of the diverse Chobe Park.

Kalahari Desert & Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

The flat plain of the Kalahari Desert stretches north from South Africa through Namibia to Angola and Zambia, covering almost 70% of Botswana, in what is one of the most extensive sand basins in the world. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) in Botswana’s Kalahari is the world’s largest game reserve.

The name Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word "Kgalagadi", which means "the great thirst". The Kalahari is famous for the San Bushman people, traditional hunter-gatherers, living in this challenging terrain. The vast open spaces and arid beauty of the Kalahari make this semi-desert a fascinating and unforgettable safari destination. The Kalahari isn’t a true desert as it does receive rainfall and is well vegetated, particularly in Botswana where grass, trees and scrub grow. Parts of the Kalahari are mostly very dry, such as the extensive salt pans of the Makgadikgadi Pan in northern Botswana.
