France's Bouhanni crashes out of the Tour de France

AMIENS, France (Reuters) - France's Nacer Bouhanni abandoned the Tour de France after crashing on Wednesday's fifth stage and being taken away in an ambulance. The sprinter, who was targeting stage wins and possibly the green jersey for the points classification, tangled with three team mates 18 kilometers into the 189.5-km ride from Arras. Bouhanni was the only one who could not resume racing. There were no details on his injuries. He had sustained bruised ribs in a crash at the French national championships 10 days ago, confirming his participation in the Tour in the last minute. The 24-year-old has three Giro d'Italia and two Vuelta stage wins to his name. (Reporting by Julien Pretot, editing by Alan Baldwin)

Bouhanni defies pain at Tour de France

  • Author: SI Staff

UTRECHT, Netherlands (AP) The Tour de France legend feeds itself on stories of pain and courage. Battered and bruised but still up for a fight, Nacer Bouhanni is ready to write another chapter of the race odyssey.

After a high speed crash last week in the finale of the French national championship left him on the tarmac with his ribs damaged, Bouhanni had only a slim chance of being on the starting line in Utrecht, where the Tour begins on Saturday with a 13.8-kilometer time trial.

In the aftermath of the accident, the up-and-coming sprinter posted a picture on Twitter of his bandaged body and wrote: ''Surely out of the Tour. Rib is cracked or broken.''

''That evening, I thought I was out of the Tour,'' said Bouhanni, who rides for Cofidis.

The hard-working Frenchman - also an amateur boxer - headed to the hospital, his morale low. There, X-rays revealed damage to his rib cartilages. But no fracture.

''That changed everything,'' said Cofidis sports director Yvon Sanquer. ''With fractured ribs, you're out for at least two weeks. Knowing his character, I knew it would be possible for him to recover. He is a true sprinter, with such a big heart.''

Bouhanni has been able to ride his bike every day this week and confirmed on Friday after a two-hour training session that he would compete with sprint kings Alexander Kristoff and Mark Cavendish for stage wins.

''I won't try to find excuses, I want to take part in the fight from the very first sprint,'' said Bouhanni, who keeps feeling the pain when taking deep breaths

''The good thing is that my condition is improving every day,'' he said, with a big plaster on his right elbow. ''And I'm mentally ready.''

Bouhanni was not responsible for the accident, which happened when former FDJ teammate Anthony Roux took him down.

Although Roux apologized for the unfortunate move, it was also a reminder of Bouhanni's tense relationship with his former employer.

Bouhanni, who will be riding his second Tour de France after crashing out of the race in 2013, was not selected for the Tour by FDJ last year and left the French outfit in acrimony during the offseason following a dispute with manager Marc Madiot. The two are still at odds and the sprinter said he was upset by Madiot's unsympathetic comments after his crash.

Before moving to Cofidis as their new team leader, Bouhanni had won stages at both the Vuelta and Giro. After struggling earlier this year, he seemed in fine form in the buildup to the Tour, with stages victories at the Criterium du Dauphine and Halle-Ingooigem at the end of June.

''If he wins a stage at the Tour, he will have claimed victories at the three Grands Tours, a feat which is not common among 24-year-old riders,'' Sanquer said.

The competition at the Tour will be much stronger though, and Bouhanni's teammates lack the experience to set him up in perfect conditions in the brutal sprint battles. Kristoff and Cavendish's teams - Katusha and Etixx-Quick-Step - are well-oiled machines, capable of providing efficient lead-out trains for their ace sprinters.

Cavendish's chances of adding to his tally of 25 career Tour wins this year have been boosted by Marcel Kittel's absence after the German did not recover in time from a long virus.

Kristoff and Cavendish have amassed victories this season but the fight for the best sprinter's green jersey should not be limited to a two-way battle, with the likes of John Degenkolb, Andre Greipel, Michael Matthews and Peter Sagan also forces to be reckoned with over the next three weeks.

''There are many of us capable of winning stages, it's good for the fans, and for the show,'' Bouhanni said.

Nacer Bouhanni announces retirement from pro cycling - "I fought body and soul to try to regain my level in vain"

Nacer Bouhanni is retiring from pro cycling . The 33-year old French sprinter has achieved a lot early in his career, but could not return to his level after suffering countless injuries over the past years.

"Dear friends, loved ones, supporters, I announce my retirement after 27 years of competitive cycling. I have been thinking carefully about this decision for several months. I started cycling at the age of 6, it very quickly became a great passion," the Frenchman shared in an Instagram post. "70 victories, ups, downs, beautiful and less beautiful encounters, joys, disappointments, but I will only keep the best."

"I want to dedicate this victory to the people who continued to believe in me" - Wout van Aert benefits from Jumbo-Visma's power towards Coppa Bernocchi triumph

Bouhanni turned pro in 2011 with FDJ together with Arnaud Démare, both risen to the top of the sprinter world and then had an internal rivalry within the team. In 2015, after taking stage wins at the Vuelta a Espana and Giro d'Italia - alongside the points classification - he left for Cofidis. In 2018 he still won a sprint stage at the Vuelta, but his success diminished as new generations of sprinters emerged. Multiple altercations with other riders, team staff and hotel guests also put a dark shade in his stint in the spot.

However the injuries cost him the most. Time and time again the Frenchman had to endure unexpected dips in his health. In April of 2022 he hit a pedestrian at the Tour of Turkey that crossed the road ahead of the peloton and suffered serious injuries. "After my serious accident last year which cost me a serious cervical fracture and a very long rehabilitation, I had become a shadow of myself. I fought body and soul to try to regain my level in vain."

PREVIEW | Tre Valli Varesine 2023: The last test for Roglic, Pogacar and company before Il Lombardia

After 9 months sidelined he crashed again in his return to racing in 2023, he crashed on other occasions throughout the year. Ultimately, his level was far from what he had shown in the past this season. With Arnaud Démare coming in to lead the team and other sprinters filling the remaining leading spots, there was no place for Bouhanni in Arkéa Samsic anymore, and his fight to return to his best level ends.

"Life has decided otherwise. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love and support. I have some great projects coming up that are also exciting," he concluded, hinting at a possible documentary related to his career.

“He has received a huge offer beyond all expectations" - More details on Primoz Roglic's Jumbo-Visma departure

"there is already a contract for evenepoel with ineos. the deal between him and the british team will be completed" - reports say there's no chance of evenepoel riding for visma-soudal merger.

Bouhanni out of Tour after stage five crash

The tour de france has come to an early end for nacer bouhanni after a stage-five crash..

Nacer Bouhanni has withdrawn from the Tour de France following a crash on stage five.

The Cofidis sprinter was viewed as one of the main challengers for the green points jersey after overcoming a rib injury sustained in a crash in the French national road race.

But Bouhanni suffered more misfortune on the 189.5-kilometre route from Arras to Amiens Metropole on Wednesday as he was involved in a crash in the peloton involving multiple Cofidis riders after 12km.

All of the other riders involved were able to get back on their bikes, but Bouhanni was taken away by ambulance as his Tour was brought to an early end.

Frenchman Nacer Bouhanni wins stage 4 of Paris-Nice race

  • Copy Link copied

ROMANS-SUR-ISERE, France (AP) — French rider Nacer Bouhanni outpaced his rivals in a sprint finish to win the fourth stage of the Paris-Nice race on Thursday, while Australian Michael Matthews retained the overall lead.

Matthews beat Bouhanni in controversial circumstances on Tuesday’s second stage when Bouhanni was penalized for deviating from his line in the final sprint.

“This time there’s no controversy, I won,” Bouhanni said. “Of course I was a bit revengeful, what happened in Tuesday’s sprint upset me, and I slept badly that night. It consumed a lot of my energy and I wanted this win to forget all of that.”

Bouhanni held off Belgian rider Edward Theuns and Andre Greipel of Germany to win the 195.5-kilometer (121-mile) trek from Julienas to Romans-sur-Isere at the foot of the Vercors mountain range in the Alps of southeastern France.

Matthews leads Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands by 14 seconds overall, with Patrick Bevin of New Zealand 19 seconds back in third place.

The standings are set for a shakeup on Friday, when Stage 5 takes the peloton up the famed Mont Ventoux, one of the most feared climbs on the Tour de France.

Race facing €6.9 million lawsuit after crash that shortened Nacer Bouhanni's career

Arkéa-B&B Hotels and Nacer Bouhanni have filed against the Tour of Turkey after crash with spectator

Nacer Bouhanni at the Region Pays de la Loire Tour 2023

Nacer Bouhanni and his former Arkéa-B&B Hotels team are demanding €6.9 million in damages from the Tour of Turkey, following the French sprinter's 2022 crash with a spectator that saw him break his neck.

The incident took place on stage two of the eight-stage UCI 2.Pro-ranked event, when the bunch careered into an unsuspecting spectator who was walking in the road.

Despite the crash taking place relatively early in the season, Frenchman Bouhanni did not race again in 2022. He returned in 2023, but with neck issues still plaguing him, he did not recover winning form, only managing four top-10s during the whole season. He retired at the end of 2023, aged 33.

Bouhanni has told French sports outlet L'Equipe that he still has physio on his neck every week and that he estimated the crash had shortened his career by three years.

The rider is seeking €2.7 million in damages from the Tour of Turkey's organisers, the Turkiye Bisiklet Feradasyonu (Turkish Cycling Federation), while the Arkéa team wants €4.2 million to make up for what it says is loss of income.

Bouhanni's lawyer argues that the accident would not have happened if the race organisation had adhered to the UCI's standards, while Arkéa team manager Emanuel Hubert said that the team had “lost a lot of points because Nacer was out for so long”.

Bouhanni turned pro with the French FDJ team in 2011, having completed a stint with the team as a stagiaire the year before, and started winning almost immediately, picking up a stage victory in the Tropicale Amissa Bongo in the January.

He had arguably the best year of his career in 2014, when he won stages in the Vuelta a España and the Giro d'Italia , and also picked up the Giro points jersey.

But Bouhanni's tangles with controversy made as many headlines as his wins, with much made of his lifelong practice of boxing. In 2016 he missed the Tour de France after breaking a bone in his hand during a fight with drunken revellers at a hotel, while his no-holds-barred sprinting style proved frequently problematic – in 2021, for example, he was disqualified and suspended for two months for pushing Jake Stewart into the barriers at Cholet-Pays de Loire, while at the Tour de France in 2017, FDJ rider Jacopo Guarnieri was moved to say: "He's a d**k, he's always making people crash. We know he's like that. He's probably upset with us because he always loses."

Bouhanni has also suffered his share of wrongs – he was subjected to "hundreds" of racist messages after the Jake Stewart incident and had to withdraw from the Scheldeprijs one-day race as a result.

Bouhanni racing to save his Tour de France spot

Cofidis could end rider’s contract a year early if form continues to drop

Cofidis ’ patience is wearing thin with Nacer Bouhanni , with team manager Cedric Vasseur telling Cyclingnews that bringing an out of form leader to the Tour de France would be ‘the worst situation for us’.

Vasseur: There's no pressure on Bouhanni

Bouhanni: It will take time to adapt to a new way of working

Nacer Bouhanni withdraws from Paris-Nice due to illness

Nacer Bouhanni ruled out of Milan-San Remo due to bronchitis

Bouhanni quits Volta a Catalunya

Bouhanni has endured a dreadful start to the 2018 season and has not scored a victory since last summer. At the Eschborn-Frankfurt last weekend matters came to a head with the sprinter rowing with senior sports directeur, Roberto Damiani. L’Equipe reported that the quarrel became physical, with both men disagreeing over Cofidis’ tactics and the decision to not wait for Bouhanni after he was dropped. According to Vasseur, the matter has now been resolved but the former rider-turned team manager has stated that unless Bouhanni finds his form in the next two months then his Tour de France spot could be under serious threat.

Of greater concern for Bouhanni could be Vasseur’s stance over the rider’s long-term future at the team. While Vasseur believes that Bouhanni is showing signs of progress, he admits that if Bouhanni’s winless run continues beyond July then the rider could be faced with talks over his contract. The Frenchman has a deal with Cofidis for the 2019 season, and earns a reported salary of €1.3 million a year.

“We want to take him to the Tour, of course we do. But we took him out of Milan-San Remo because if you want to race 300km then you need to be at the top level. If you’re not at the top level then you have nothing to really offer. We want to take Nacer to the Tour, but I’m expecting an improvement in his form,” Vasseur told Cyclingnews on Tuesday evening, after Bouhanni had finished ninth in the first stage of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque.

“I want him to show us mental and physical improvements. He needs to show he’s going in the right way because the Tour de France is a three-week race. It’s the most difficult race of the year, the tension is high, it’s always fast, and it takes all your energy. If you start the Tour without a full tank of energy then you can’t succeed. It’s important to have a leader at the Tour de France, but what’s more important is that he’s riding well. If you have a losing leader then it doesn’t help the team. We need to help him find his way back. We won’t make a decision until after the French championships but I think that it would be the worst situation for us if we took a leader to the Tour who had gone through six months of a bad season. He has to win before the Tour de France, that we agree on and what would be perfect would be a win in Dunkerque.”

Vasseur took over from Yvon Sanquer at the end of 2017 with Cofidis in disarray. The team had stagnated and Bouhanni had gone another season without winning a Tour de France stage. Restoring order and discipline, while fostering a mentality of aggressive racing were all desperately needed, and Vasseur looked to experienced directeur Damiani to rescue the French squad. At the start of the year Vasseur talked about Bouhanni needing guidance as much off the bike as on it, but the sprinter appears to have clashed with Damiani’s style of management. The issues at Cofidis lie much deeper than with just one rider, but the former Vuelta and Giro stage winner shoulders the majority of the responsibility, given that he is the team’s main focal point.

“I think that in the past Nacer used to take the decisions for other people. But he has to behave according to his own role in the team,” Vasseur told Cyclingnews .

“If you’re a rider you need to focus on the race and do your job. You don’t need to take the decisions for a sports directeur. If a rider is taking decisions on races they choose to go to, or whether they pull on the front, then it’s no longer a team. For me, wearing the same jersey is not enough. You have to sweat, think and enjoy the race together. It’s not just a jersey that makes a team.”

During last week’s race in Frankurt, the situation between Damiani and Bouhanni flared up after the Frenchman was dropped. According to Vasseur, the rider expected full team support, and for the three Cofidis riders in the lead group to sit up and pace him back to the main field. However, with the gap between the field and Bouhanni at two minutes Damiani refused to sacrifice further riders for the sprinter’s cause, leading to an argument - first on the road, and then on the team bus after the race.

“Roberto is a leader and he’s expecting a lot from the riders, and he’s not on the road to be the riders’ friend. When I brought him to the team it was so he could be really strict with the strategy in the team. Of course, when you tell riders that they have to pull and there’s still 150 km to go, then they’re not going to be happy but you have to take that decision as a directeur. It’s the role of the directeur to take decisions. I’ve asked Roberto not to be flexible because we’re not in a position to be flexible. We expect a lot from the riders and some of them are used to having bad habits. If you want to be able to compete at the highest level you need the maximum from everyone, riders and staff. That’s what Roberto is asking for and expecting.

“At Frankfurt Nacer was dropped and lost two minutes to the front riders. He asked Roberto for help from other riders but you can’t close a gap of two minutes to a group that has riders like Kristoff and Gaviria. At that point, he was a little bit pissed but Roberto drove him back after and it was fine. Sometimes in races, when things are not going for you, you can lose your head a little bit. But that’s the past now. With Roberto and Nacer they had a good discussion after the race and Nacer understood that it wasn’t right to wait for him. Two minutes was too much to make up.”

Bouhanni’s best result this year was second on a stage of the Dubai Tour, back in February. Illness and a disrupted training schedule have played their parts, and Vasseur, despite the criticism, is determined to help his star rider return to his best form. A successful and winning Bouhanni is still a huge asset for any team. However, for Vasseur, the improvements needed are not just physical and stem from the rider’s attitude.

Earning respect

“My advice, and I already spoke to him back in December, is that if you want riders to work 100 per cent for you then you need to earn their respect. That’s part of being a leader. Being a leader isn’t just about having the biggest salary on the team. It’s a lot more than that. I honestly think that Nacer is trying his best but the new methods need time to work. Once they do, I really think he’ll find long-term stability.

“The beginning of the season wasn’t what we were expecting. The first part of the year was bad for him because he couldn’t reach a very high level. Of course, there were some special circumstances because he was sick at Paris-Nice and then we had really bad weather which disrupted his preparation. I think he’s coming back to the right level but as I said, we expected more from him and some victories in the first part of the year.”

Vasseur remains positive, and believes that a slow start to this campaign could help Bouhanni peak later in the season.

“When a rider isn’t in top shape at the start of the year then he should be fresh for the Tour de France. All that energy saved, it might save his year during July. He still has to work and he still needs to find a way to win again. For me, that’s the most important thing.”

While Vasseur remains supportive, the reality is that Bouhanni needs to rediscover his best form in the next few months. Missing the Tour would be a huge blow for both him and the team’s sponsors. The long-term ramifications are clear, too.

“If Nacer wants to leave the team then we can discuss that. We don’t expect that. We expect him to win races. Cofidis bet on Nacer and gave him an important role. I hope that the point doesn’t come, and that after the Tour he’s not still looking for a win. Then for sure, we’ll have to ask if we’re going the wrong way both for him and the team.”

June 27, 2016 – French rider Nacer Bouhanni was named Monday as team leader of Cofidis for the Tour de France.

AFP/Yuzuru Sunada

The announcement comes a day after Bouhanni was forced to pull out of the French national championships after injuring his hand in a fight the night before.

Bouhanni’s Cofidis team said in a statement afterwards that the 25-year-old had been “assaulted by drunken people”. The 2012 French champion was visibly struggling with his hand injury but Cofidis said his Tour de France participation was not in doubt.

The Grand Boucle begins on Saturday at Mont St Michel with a flat stage expected to end in a bunch sprint, in which Bouhanni would be one of the favourites. It will be a third Tour de France for Bouhanni after 2013 and 2015, as he bids for a first stage win in the race.

Cofidis team for Tour de France: Nacer Bouhanni (FRA) Borut Bozic (SLO) Jerome Cousin (FRA) Arnold Jeannesson (FRA) Christophe Laporte (FRA) Cyril Lemoine (FRA) Luis Angel Mate (ESP) Daniel Navarro (ESP) Geoffrey Soupe (FRA)
