Technology | paul pelosi attacker sentenced to 30 years in prison, technology | gm’s cruise pays more than $8 million to san francisco pedestrian run over and dragged by its robotaxi.

brunch cruise alameda

General Motors Co.’s autonomous taxi unit has reached an $8 million to $12 million settlement with a pedestrian who was dragged by one of its self-driving vehicles in San Francisco, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The settlement was struck earlier this year and the woman is out of the hospital, said the person, who declined to be identified discussing a private matter.

In the October incident, a pedestrian crossing the road was struck by another vehicle before landing in front of the Cruise taxi. The robotaxi braked hard but ran over the person. It then tried to pull over as a safety maneuver but continued driving for 20 feet at a speed of up to seven miles per hour with the pedestrian still under the car.

Cruise subsequently grounded its entire US fleet after its license was suspended by California. Former Chief Executive Officer Kyle Vogt resigned, nine executives were fired and about a quarter of the workforce let go.

Last month, Cruise said it was preparing to resume testing its robotaxis with safety drivers in Phoenix, an important step in its attempts to restart services.

The settlement was earlier reported by Fortune.

Advice | paul pelosi attacker sentenced to 30 years in prison, advice | ask amy: i fled the gym and left her with the creepy man, i feel bad about the other woman. what should i have done.

Author

I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t know what to do. I was so uncomfortable, I finished up and left the gym.

I guess I’m wondering what you think I could have — or should have — done to help her out.

— Disturbed

Dear Disturbed : You could (and should) have gone to the front desk to let them know what you were witnessing. Gym personnel should intervene.

Another technique that women can try to slyly help one another out in the moment is what I’d describe as a “faux friend intervention.” You could approach her, make eye contact as if you are friends and say, “Hey, I’m finishing up now. Are you ready to go get coffee?”

Dear Amy: My husband and I, along with a lot of other people our age, have not been able to recover from the pandemic.

We are both active 75-year-olds and have been married 55 years.

It seems like everyone’s forgotten that most people over 65 are retired and have no young children. They don’t have jobs and colleagues to return to. They don’t have young children to keep them busy through school and extracurriculars. So many of the activities they used to participate in have been shut down.

Volunteer opportunities and senior lunches have been discontinued. Our church has done away with its coffee hour that was the main way to keep up with members. Cruise ships, which are an easier way for older people to travel, now depart from port cities that are difficult to fly to. We can’t even go to the movie theater because they blast the sound so loudly that it hurts.

With no outlets for socialization, my husband and I spend 24 hours a day together. Although we have hobbies that have kept us busy, the lack of outside human contact makes us unhappy. With no control over all we’ve lost, we are bad-tempered and argue. We see no future.

While we know that everyone — especially our children — needs special attention recovering from the isolation of COVID-19, it seems as if America has forgotten its seniors entirely. Can you suggest any groups inviting older people back “to life” post-pandemic?

— Still Isolated in Chicago

Dear Still Isolated : I appreciate your perspective about the continued isolation you’re experiencing as a result of the pandemic. As you know, isolation is bad for both your mental and physical health.

But you live in Chicago (lucky you), which is an extremely social city with short but glorious summers. Now is the perfect time to climb out of your isolation and look around.

The experiences you had grown accustomed to have changed. You are going to have to change, too, and make a very real effort to create new experiences and meet new people.

My first suggestion is that you should see if you and your husband can revive your church’s coffee hour. Are volunteers needed to coordinate? If so, you should step up and see how you can be helpful.

Museums and galleries offer special events for seniors. Your local public library (and especially the Harold Washington Library, downtown) will offer book discussion groups and other free events. The Chicago Ornithological Society sponsors bird watching events and field trips — and includes beginners (chicagobirder.org).

Meetup.com is an online site helping people to meet one another along specific lines of interest. Type in “Chicago seniors social” and you can browse through dozens of offerings for elders, ranging from Karaoke and trivia outings to nature walks, according to neighborhoods.

Plus, the baseball season is young, which means that the Cubs are still in the running. If you’re able, a visit to Wrigley Field should boost your spirits.

Dear Amy : “Worried Parents” were upset that their young child had cut her own hair (and then lied about it).

As a parent and a barber I thought I would give you my perspective on young kids cutting their own hair (or that of a sibling).

I follow up by telling them that I make my living cutting hair — so don’t take away my job!

— Vern

Dear Vern : You’re a treasure.

You can email Amy Dickinson at [email protected] or send a letter to Ask Amy, P.O. Box 194, Freeville, NY 13068. You can also follow her on Twitter @askingamy or Facebook.

Carnival Cruise Lines treats 100 military women to brunch during Fleet Week

By Marybel Rodriguez

May 10, 2024 / 6:03 PM EDT / CBS Miami

MIAMI - Just ahead of Mother's Day and in honor of Fleet Week Miami and Military Appreciation Month, Carnival Cruise Lines wanted to do something special for the women in the military.

Carnival Cruise Lines is saying thank you and honoring the brave women in the military.

"This is a celebration of our women in the military, and it is a great way to showcase the services. The Navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard, and a phenomenal woman that we have that work every day, extremely hard to protect this country and protect our citizens," said Admiral Benjamin Nicholson, with the US Marines.

During Fleet Week Miami and just before Mother's Day, Carnival held a brunch for more than 100 military members in appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

"I'm having a wonderful time I love the city of Miami very cool to be on the cruise ship," said Virginia Brodie Marines.

And believe it or not, for many of these military members who spend days out at sea, this is actually their first time on a cruise ship.

"It's nice to see everyone out here and they are beautiful uniforms coming out here, together, integrated. It's great,"   said Claudia Camacho of the US Navy.

Claudia Camacho has been with the Navy for more than a decade it is a job she takes pride in but says being a mother is what fills her heart.

"I love being a mom. It's definitely the best job I've ever had. I have two daughters. I've been in the Navy for 13 years. Definitely hard when I have to leave, but my kids are very resilient military children are a different breed, they have to be. I love them. They're my whole life,"  said Camacho.

Carnival Cruise Lines has been having appreciation events for the military since 2016 and they hope to do so on every cruise that sails. We want to thank all military members for their service. We do hope they are enjoying their time in Miami and wish all the moms a happy Mother's Day.

Bloody-Faced Woman Crashes Into Oncoming L.A. Freeway Traffic in Police Chase

Colorado driver cruises through fireball after tanker crash on dashcam video, colorado i-70 crash driver cruises through fireball after tanker truck explodes.

A tanker truck went up in flames on a Colorado freeway that left one person dead -- and TMZ has footage of the moment it happened ... including somebody driving through the fire.

Check out this wild video we obtained that captures the immediate aftermath of a fiery wreck along I-70 just outside of Denver Thursday morning -- where a tanker got slammed into by another driver on the road after it'd pulled over when it started to overheat.

Per state officials, another person who was behind the tanker somehow managed to slam right into it ... causing the entire vehicle to ignite and explode, with fire going everywhere.

That's where our video picks up ... seconds after the crash, and just moments before the flames shoot out onto the rest of the freeway ... with oncoming traffic not able to dodge it. The driver from this dashcam footage actually cruises right through ... but was freaked out.

You can tell the entire scary scene crept up on him out of nowhere ... and before he had time to react or swerve to avoid it -- he was right in the thick of the massive blaze.

Fortunately for him, he came out on the other side alright ... but it looks like the car in front of him -- which also went through the inferno -- had some lingering fire hanging on the tire.

Developing: @csp_golden confirms at least one person was killed in this fiery crash. What we know: 📍I-70 is closed near Morrison for a crash involving a vehicle and a tanker that was broken down on the WB shoulder. 📍 The driver of the car slammed into the back of the tanker pic.twitter.com/ImZBRtImHL — Briana Fernandez (@BrianaFernNews) May 16, 2024 @BrianaFernNews

Other videos of the accident circulated as the fire grew larger -- spreading to grassy areas on the side of the freeway and sending up plumes of smoke high into the sky -- and you can see just how big it was ... ultimately, parts of I-70 had to be closed off for much of Thursday.

Sadly, the person who rammed into the truck died ... and the tanker driver was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. No word on what exactly may have caused the crash.

Officials are investigating ... and a cleanup process was underway well into the afternoon.
