Catalina’s Other Side

Located on Catalina’s west end, Two Harbors is a mere 22 miles from the Southern California mainland. This rustic village sits on a narrow strip of land that separates Isthmus Cove on the leeward side of the island from Catalina Harbor on the windward side.

Guests visiting from the mainland typically arrive via high-speed ferry from San Pedro, although many come on private boats and pick up one of more than 700 moorings available for rent in the many protected coves and harbors along the coast.

Guests already on the island can travel down to Two Harbors for the day from Avalon on the  Discover Two Harbors Cyclone Power Boat .

Outdoor Lover’s Paradise

Two Harbors offers a host of activities for outdoor lovers of all kinds. The  Dive & Recreation Center has everything you need to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, camping, kayaking, boating, fishing, snorkeling, and world-class SCUBA diving in crystal clear water.

If you just want a place to relax in the warm sun and cool ocean breeze, head down to  Harbor Sands , where you can enjoy signature food and drinks from  Harbor Reef Restaurant  on our waterfront dining deck, or at your beachside palapa or chaise lounge.

Renowned Hospitality

Accommodations in Two Harbors include historic  Banning House Lodge ,  Villa Santa Cruz  and  Villa Santa Rosa , comfortable  camping cabins , and four of the best  campgrounds  in all of California, each offering unique experiences that make Catalina’s west end the best end.

Dining options include Harbor Reef Restaurant & Saloon ,  West End Galley , and the General Store , where guests can also pick up groceries and supplies, or order them in advance of their arrival.

The friendly staff at  Two Harbors Visitor Services  can help you with transportation, check-in, equipment rental, permits,  event information  and any other needs you may have. The Harbor Department handles our mooring and Shoreboat operations, as well as the Fuel Dock.

Rich Colorful History

American Indians were first to inhabit the Two Harbors area, living off the sea and trading with Indians on the mainland. Spanish explorers, fur traders, and even pirates and smugglers followed. During the Civil War, members of the Union Army were stationed in Two Harbors and today their barracks remain.

Many Hollywood movies were filmed in the Two Harbors area, so many in fact that it was once known as the Isthmus Movie Colony. The American Bison that wander about in the outlying areas were brought here for the filming of "The Vanishing American," a western based on Zane Grey’s novel of the same name.

Unable to round up the small herd after production wrapped, crews left them to fend for themselves. At one point the herd grew to as many as six hundred bison. The Catalina Island Conservancy now monitors and maintains the herd at about 150.

The wnba is investigating whether vegas tourism authority can sponsor aces players for $100k each.

LAS VEGAS – The WNBA is investigating whether the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's $100,000 annual sponsorship to Aces player for this season and next is allowed.

A league spokesperson confirmed Saturday that there is an open investigation looking into the deal. The sponsorship does not violate the WNBA’s salary cap because the Las Vegas authority did not orchestrate it with the club. But other teams likely were raising questions about the fairness of the sponsorship and whether it violates the spirit of the cap rules.

Recommended Videos

“I’ll put it to you real simple. Most of sponsorship people go after the top two people,” Aces coach Becky Hammon said. “This situation from what I understand is, they wanted the whole team. They called individual agents. I don't know the details. I have nothing to do with it. The Aces don't have anything to do with it. That's what happened.”

This isn’t the Aces first run-in with the league over the last few years. Last year, the WNBA suspended Hammon for two games and took away the Aces’ 2025 first-round draft pick because the franchise violated league rules regarding impermissible player benefits and workplace policies.

“Just another day in the life of the Aces. We can't just ever start normal," star A'ja Wilson said. "There's always going to be something and that's OK. When we're talking about growing the game or taking the next step it can't always be investigated. It has to be like we're trying to make things better for franchises, for players for teams.”

The head of the authority feels they did nothing wrong.

“We did this the right way,” authority president and CEO Steve Hill told The Associated Press on Saturday. “We did something that we think works for Las Vegas and I think great for the players. We did this without the team. It was our idea and any questions they ask they’ll find that out.”

The authority posted a video on X of Hill telling the players in the locker room the news on Friday.

“We have 100 influencers we pay to represent Las Vegas,” Hill told the AP. “This isn’t any different then that. All of these ladies are completely eligible to have sponsorships. We are just asking them to represent Vegas.”

The players were thrilled by the move.

“The city of Vegas I’ve always said, it’s a big small town and they just want the best for the people here,” point guard Chelsea Gray said before the Aces' home game Saturday against the Los Angeles Sparks. "They’re investing in us and so they put their money where their mouth is. We’ve done so much for the city and having fun doing it.

“It was a great moment for me and my teammates, of somebody actually putting funds behind, saying that they’re supporting and they want to have our back.”

According to the website Spotrac, which tracks player salaries, the sponsorship is higher than the earnings of six Aces players.

“Definitely more than my salary,” said rookie Kate Martin, who makes $67,249, according to the website. “I’m super thankful. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming, but this is very much real life and that is what all these players deserve. I wouldn’t be getting this crazy bonus if it weren’t for how great all of these players have played in the last few years.”

The $100,000 also is a big addition even to what the top players make. A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum are the highest-paid Aces at $200,000 each and Gray is right behind at $196,267.

“(For) the LVCVA to see our value and to help close that pay gap, it says a lot about the character of the people that are there,” said Alysha Clark, whose salary is listed at $110,000. “So I’m extremely grateful. I’m honored to be able to represent this organization and this city and be able to put on for the city, give back to this city and pour into the community, and that’s what they did for us. It was really, really special.”

Guide to Cabana Bay Beach Resort at Universal Orlando Resort

A man and woman on a bed laughing and a kid sitting on the floor in a tube.

Nostalgia has always been part of my personal brand. I can’t help it. A known sentimentalist who frequently uses storytelling as an escape, I find it very easy to dwell in the feeling of another time. And when that reminiscence can be taken beyond imagining and into the realm of the tangible and physical, that’s when I’m really in my element.

Lucky for me, one of the most transporting examples of the vintage charm I cherish lies a short walk away from the theme parks of Universal Orlando Resort at Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort . But that’s not all this hotel has going for it… So sit back, turn on some old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, and let me tell you all you need to know!

ABOUT THE HOTEL

A lobby with bright orange chairs and a family walking.

Brilliantly designed for fun and affordability, you’ll find everything you need for a memorable vacation right here.

Price Range: $$

Perfect for: Families and groups on a budget who want to stay close to the action, but still have room to spread out; fans of Universal Volcano Bay .

Theming: The clock starts to rewind right as you pull up to Cabana Bay Beach Resort, where there are classic cars lining the outside of the lobby and a sign that says you’re in for “COLOR TV” and “COLD AIR.” But the real immersion happens when you step out of the present and into a Floridian beach resort circa the 1950s and 60s. Retro tunes fill your ears as you take in the colorful, pop-art-inspired atmosphere. Heading into the courtyard, you’ll notice buildings accompanied by giant names written with midcentury flare: “Starlight,” “Thunderbird,” “Castaway.” Welcome to the picture-perfect past! Your stay has begun.

Rooms: After you check in, you’ll quickly find the decor doesn’t stop in the lobby. Every room is decked out with vibrant shapes, clean lines, and fun details. Let’s take a look at some options!

  • Standard Room: 2 queen beds, a flat screen TV, and a mini-fridge — who knew the basics could be this stylish?
  • Family Suite: 2 queen beds in the bedroom, a pull-out sofa in the living room, 2 flat screen TVs, plus a kitchenette with a mini-fridge, microwave, and sink — perfect for larger groups.
  • Volcano View: With truly stunning views of the mighty Krakatau at Volcano Bay, these are some of the most coveted rooms in all of Universal Orlando Resort!
  • Pool View: Cabana Bay is home to two tropical pools, the Cabana Courtyard And Pool and the Lazy River Courtyard And Pool, both of which are a sight to behold. (Keep reading for more deets on these!
  • Mobility and Hearing Accessible Rooms: All the appeal of the rooms listed above, but with features like a tub with grab bars, wider door openings, and visual alarms and doorbells — making the fun accessible to all.

The value of a Universal hotel extends way beyond themes and amenities. Every day in the parks (valid theme park admission required) is made easier by the advantages offered with your stay.

  • Early Park Admission to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter : Enter the park up to one hour before it opens and knock out some of the most popular rides and attractions before the crowds.
  • Walking Path to Volcano Bay : Cabana Bay Beach Resort is literal steps away from a tropical oasis. You won’t have to deal with buses or other forms of transportation. Just whisk yourself down the path to paradise!
  • Transportation to Universal Studios Florida , Universal Islands of Adventure , and Universal CityWalk : Complimentary shuttle buses offer a quick hop on/hop off solution for getting to the action.
  • Room Key Charging: You can easily charge purchases to your room resort-wide (in the theme parks and at Universal CityWalk)… all you need is your room key!
  • Complimentary Purchase Delivery: Speaking of shopping, select stores throughout the resort will deliver your purchases directly to your hotel, keeping your hands free.

While the theme parks are just minutes away from your doorstep, it’s also possible to have a fully eventful or relaxing day and never leave Cabana Bay Beach Resort. In fact, I would encourage it when planning your Orlando vacation.

5 ladies laughing in a pool.

My first stop after checking into any hotel is the pool area. I need to know what my lounging afternoons are going to look like, after all. Here, I’m never disappointed.

There are two pools to choose from:

  • Cabana Courtyard and Pool: On one side, you have a dive-tower themed water slide, cabanas for rent, fire pits, and the Atomic Tonic bar for all your food and drink needs.
  • Lazy River Courtyard and Pool: On the other, a pool with its very own winding river and sand beach, in addition to fire pits and the Hideaway Bar & Grill . Let me say that again: A lazy river right in your hotel, with amazing views of the Krakatau, the mighty volcano of Volcano Bay!

Personally, I’m headed straight for an inner tube where you can find me floating to my hearts’ content… at least until I’m in need of a cocktail.

Galaxy Bowl

A family laughing and a man and girl high-fiving.

Straight out of every beloved 50s-inspired movie, you’ll find 10 lanes of fun for the whole family at the heart of Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Retro style blends seamlessly with modern technology as you record a strike and enjoy a table service restaurant with sandwiches, hamburgers, pizzas and a fully stocked bar.

I find this to be one of the real hidden gems of Universal Orlando Resort as a whole. It’s not something you think to look for, and yet, you could spend an entire afternoon here easily.

Jack LaLanne Physical Fitness Studio

An ode to the “Godfather of Fitness,” this gym is complimentary for guests and will keep you in tip top shape on vacation. It even contains décor and artifacts from the home of Jack LaLanne, himself!

Ace the Arcade

Your kids (and kids at heart) will stay occupied all day long exploring this haven of arcade classics and modern video game favorites.

WHAT TO EAT & DRINK

Two men eating breakfast.

I keep dwelling on the hotel’s immersive qualities — the architecture, the furnishing, the music. Well, add food to that list because dining here is immersive in its own right.

Shakes Malt Shoppe

No visit to the midcentury is complete without sitting on a stool and casually sipping a delicious milkshake. Harkening back to the soda counters of old, this place deserves a stop any time of the day. Serving breakfast, as well as a mouthwatering array of ice cream-based goods, you’ll probably find a reason to return tomorrow, too.

For those 21 and older, I suggest the Chocolate Peanut Butter shake from the “Grown-Up” list with peanut butter ice cream, peanut butter whisky, and whipped cream.

Bayliner Diner

Centrally located, this large food court contains everything you need to feed your family breakfast, lunch, and dinner. With stations specializing in sandwiches, pizzas, burgers, salads, desserts, and grab-and-go options, everyone will find what they’re craving. But perhaps the best detail lies in the entertainment: Throughout the dining area, you’ll see large screens broadcasting nostalgic commercials, completely enveloping you in the origins of the TV dinner era.

PRO TIP: This is also where you can grab a s’mores kit to take out to those poolside fire pits I mentioned for a real treat!

Swizzle Lounge

Those of drinking age will find this swanky watering hole not too far from the lobby. Try the signature Swizzle Rum Punch or opt for one of many other creative cocktails. With a full set of barstools and colorful arrays of armchairs, you’ll find the perfect seat to let the atmosphere sweep you into a bygone age.

Atomic Tonic & Hideaway Bar & Grill

A man and a woman in swimsuits holding food.

You don’t have to leave the pool areas when you get hungry. These hot spots are perfect for lunch and dinner with grilled options, sandwiches, pizza, salads, and beverages to keep you cool. Note the out of this world details of Atomic Tonic that harken back to the glory days of the space coast — a great touch!

Delizioso Pizza

Two words: room delivery. After a full day exploring the parks, you collapse in bed and decide you really don’t want to move again to get food. Perhaps the best news you’ve heard all day is that the food can come to you! Soon, you’re enjoying the cheesy goodness of a pizza with salad and dessert on the side.

You undoubtedly need some fuel before you take advantage of that Early Park Admission we discussed, and the lobby has you covered. Get caffeinated with your routine order and feel ready to go by the time the shuttle arrives.

WHERE TO SHOP

Two mannequins in a gift shop.

Taking a piece of my temporary home back to my permanent home is always something I treasure about vacations. There are plenty of keepsakes to be found here!

Universal Studios Store

The perfect stop for a souvenir run or for last-minute toiletry needs, you’ll undoubtedly end up frequenting this central market. Stock up on mementos branded with beloved characters you’ve enjoyed in the parks. What I love most, though, are the items you can’t get in any other store: T-shirts, bathrobes, and other home goods with the Cabana Bay logo. For years to come, you’ll be able to look at that retro emblem, smile, and remember your trip back in time.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Certain times of year call for a little something extra when it comes to hotel décor…

Halloween Horror Nights

Every year when fall rolls around, the fog creeps into Universal Studios Florida and nights are suddenly filled with the screams of Halloween Horror Nights . Fright fans will definitely want to consider a stay at Cabana Bay Beach Resort because the festivities often extend to the hotel. In the past, we’ve seen fun photo ops and special food offerings. Plus, resort guests can arrive at the separately ticketed event via a resort-dedicated entrance by presenting their room key, allowing for more time in the thick of the terror.

In the winter, ‘tis the season for trees topped with tinsel! Cheery adornments pop up all over the lobby, perfect for your family’s celebration and even a photo op for a holiday card.

La Cabana Resort Invests $28 Million in Renovation and Expansion, Demonstrates Confidence in Aruba’s Tourism Future

cabana tourist center 2

ORANJESTAD – On Wednesday morning, the Minister of Tourism and Public Health, Mr. Dangui Oduber, paid a visit to La Cabana Beach Resort & Casino. Here, he was warmly received by the General Manager, Mr. Joe Najjar, as well as the staff. An extensive presentation was given about the ongoing developments at the resort, including hotel figures, plans, and ongoing investments.

Minister Oduber was deeply impressed by the improvement and renovation plans that La Cabana has to enhance their offerings to guests. They have started implementing a master plan for the renovation of all their rooms. A new pool exclusively for adults will be constructed, along with a new activity center with a children’s pool. They will also renovate and reorganize their restaurants.

La Cabana has made a significant investment of $28 million, clearly demonstrating the resort’s confidence in Aruba’s vision, management, economy, and product. They are using local contractors and have mainly local employees. La Cabana is a timeshare hotel, and the majority of their staff consists of locals.

Finally, the minister thanked Mr. Najjar, General Manager of La Cabana, as well as the staff, for a very welcoming morning.

It was once a center of Islamic learning. Now Mali’s historic city of Djenné mourns lack of visitors

Djenne’s mosque in Mali has been on the World Heritage in Danger list since 2016 due to the ongoing conflict in the region. It requires a new layer of mud each year before the rainy season starts, or it will fall into disrepair. Women are responsible for bringing water from the nearby river to mix with clay and rice hulls in order to make the mud used to plaster the mosque, while the act of adding the new layer of mud is reserved for men.

DJENNE, Mali (AP) — Kola Bah used to earn a living as a tour guide in Mali’s historic city of Djenné, once a center of Islamic learning known for the sprawling mud-brick mosque that has been on the UNESCO World Heritage in Danger list since 2016.

The Grand Mosque of Djenné — the world’s largest mud-brick building — used to draw tens of thousands of tourists to central Mali every year. Now it’s threatened by conflict between jihadi rebels , government forces and other groups.

Bah says his income was enough to support his family, which now numbers nine children, and to pay for a small herd of cattle. But these days, few visitors come to the city, and he has been largely out of work. When he needs cash, he sells some of his cattle.

Speaking to The Associated Press outside his home in Djenné's old town, Bah said locals believed the crisis would come to an end eventually, and that business would pick up as before.

“But the more time passed, the more this dream proved illusory,” he said. “Things are really difficult now.”

Djenné is one of the oldest towns in sub-Saharan Africa and served as a market center and an important link in the trans-Saharan gold trade. Almost 2,000 of its traditional houses still survive in the old town.

Malians take part in the annual replastering of the world's largest mud-brick building, the Great Mosque of Djenne, Mali, Sunday, May 12, 2024. The Grand Mosque, built in 1907 on the site of an older mosque dating back to the 13th century, is re-plastered every year by local residents in a ritual that brings together the entire city. The towering, earth-colored structure requires a new layer of mud before the rainy season starts, or it would fall into disrepair.

Women are responsible for carrying water from the nearby river to mix with clay and rice hulls to make the mud used to plaster the mosque. Adding the new layer of mud is a job reserved for men. The joyful ritual is a source of pride for a city that has fallen on hard times, uniting people of all ages.

Bamouyi Trao Traoré, one of Djenné’s lead masons, says they work as a team from the very start. This year’s replastering took place earlier this month.

“Each one of us goes to a certain spot to supervise,” he said. “This is how we do it until the whole thing is done. We organize ourselves, we supervise the younger ones.”

Mali’s conflict erupted following a coup in 2012 that created a power vacuum, allowing jihadi groups to seize control of key northern cities. A French-led military operation pushed them out of the urban centers the following year, but the success was short-lived.

The jihadis regrouped and launched relentless attacks on the Malian military, as well as the United Nations, French and regional forces in the country. The militants proclaimed allegiance to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group .

Sidi Keita, the director of Mali’s national tourism agency in the capital of Bamako, says the drop in tourism was sharp following the violence.

“It was really a popular destination,” he said, describing tens of thousands of visitors a year and adding that today, tourists are “virtually absent from Mali.”.

Despite being one of Africa’s top gold producers, Mali ranks among the least developed nations in the world, with almost half of its 22 million people living below the national poverty line. With the tourism industry all but gone, there are ever fewer means for Malians to make a living.

Anger and frustration over what many Malians call “the crisis” is rising. The country also saw two more coups since 2020, during a wave of political instability in West and Central Africa.

Col. Assimi Goita, who took charge in Mali after a second coup in 2021, expelled French forces the following year, and turned to Russia’s mercenary units for security assistance . He also ordered the U.N. to ended its 10-year peacekeeping mission in Mali the following year.

Goita has promised to beat back the armed groups, but the U.N. and other analysts say the government is rapidly losing ground to militants . With Mali’s dire economic situation getting worse, Goita’s ruling junta ordered all political activities to stop last month, and the following day barred the media from reporting on political activities .

Moussa Moriba Diakité, head of Djenne’s cultural mission which strives to preserve the city’s heritage, said there are other challenges beyond security — including illegal excavations and trash disposal in the city.

The mission is trying to promote the message that security isn’t as bad is it seems, he said, and also get more young people involved in the replastering ritual , to help the new generation recognize its importance.

“It’s not easy to get people to understand the benefits of preserving cultural heritage right away,” he said.
