1. Palaui Island

Palaui Island is one of the emerging tourist spots in Cagayan valley. Located off the coast of mainland Luzon, this rustic paradise offers an experience of a lifetime, especially for nature lovers and adventurers.

Pristine rainforests cover most of the island and here, there are monkeys, wild pigs, numerous bird species, and giant Narra trees. Visitors can enjoy exploring the island’s terrestrial ecosystems or plunge into its rejuvenating coastal waters.

On its coasts, you can find white beaches and blue lagoons. It’s the perfect getaway if you prefer less touristy destinations.

2. Northern Sierra Madre National Park          

The park is one of the most underrated beautiful spots in Cagayan Valley. It hosts one of the country’s few remaining primary forests that are home to critically endangered species such as the Philippine Monkey-Eating Eagle.

It is a perfect spot for hiking or mountaineering and much of it remains unexplored. Hiking to the park will therefore lead tourists to rare encounters with the wild.

Caves, waterfalls, and blue lagoons can be found. Its coasts are also lined with pristine beaches. Unfortunately, human encroachments and development are threatening this fragile ecosystem.

3. Callao Cave

Callao Cave is among the most frequented tourist destinations in Cagayan valley. It features a seven-chambered cave with stunning limestone rock formations reminiscent of a cathedral dome.

One of these chambers contains a stone altar illuminated by a natural skylight. That gives the cave an eerie catacomb-like experience.

Then, there’s the cave where millions of bats dwell and another cave that hosts numerous red-billed hornbills. One of the caves here also houses the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat.

4. Pinacanauan River

Pinacanauan River is one of the largest tributaries of the Cagayan River, considered the longest and mightiest river in the Philippines. Its crystal-clear waters come from vast dipterocarp and mossy forests upstream.

Whitewater rafting, boating, and kayaking are among the prime activities done here. It is also home to endemic marine species such as eels. The locals hold a boat rowing race called Bankarera here every April 12.

5. Baggao’s Blue Waterfalls and Caves

Baggao features a series of beautiful cascades with beautiful pools reflecting the blue sky. There are mini-underground rivers here where bats and birds dwell.

Here, you’ll also find different rock formations. It’s best to come here during the summer months of March to April to enjoy the best views. It is one of the best places to go in Cagayan Valley.

6. St. Peter’s Cathedral

Daily masses are celebrated here and every year, thousands of pilgrims visit the church.

7. Calvary Hills

If you’re a Catholic pilgrim, you should not miss visiting this spot. It is one of the most popular religious tourist spots in Cagayan valley. Not only does one experience a spiritual connection but also the natural beauty of the place.

From the hill, you can have a stunning view of the Cagayan River and the lush landscapes and rolling hills in the distant. It’s best to come here during the late afternoon to catch amazing views of the sunset.

There’s also an old church that celebrates masses on Sunday.

8. San Vicente Mangrove Forests

San Vicente’s mangrove forest is one of the most preserved nature tourist spots in Cagayan valley. You’ll get to see them when you ride a Banca (boat) along a narrow water passage.

It’s one of the most pristine beaches in the country. Although it is hard to reach, you’ll get instant relief from gazing at its crystal-clear waters, white sands, and stunning rock and reef formations.

10. Millions of Bat Assembly

Yes, you’ve read that right. The forests and giant caves of Cagayan are home to some of the remaining refugees of endemic bat species.

Known as the Circadian Bat Flight, this phenomenon involves millions of bats going out from the cave and forming spectacular formations as they make their way to forage.

These bats are visible when cruising the Pinacanauan River near Callao Cave.

11. Taggat Lagoon

Taggat Lagoon is not just an ordinary lagoon. It has a mystery of its own but I’ll leave that up to the locals to share. Aside from the breathtaking sea landscape, you can find here two rock formations called Lakay Lakay and Baket Baket.

There’s a reason why they are named as such. That is why there is a sense of enchantment when you visit here.

12. Bagsang Falls

If you’re into chasing waterfalls, don’t miss visiting this spot. Bagsang falls may demand extra effort and time but as soon as you’ll reach it, it’s all worth it!

This small but charming waterfall has cold and crystal-clear waters that can soothe your muscles after the long trek. Then there’s the surrounding forest which teems with flora and fauna species.

13. Atulu Pottery Village

If you want to experience pottery or watch how it’s done, then you should see Atulu Pottery Village. The locals here have been making clay pots of different designs and sizes for centuries. They use a rare type of red clay which is found in the area.

14. Nassiping Church Ruins

If you’re fond of historical or cultural treasures, do visit Nassiping Church Ruins. Sitting on a site where both the mighty Chico and Cagayan River meets, this ancient structure was built by the Spaniards.

15 Best CAGAYAN Tourist Spots (Northern Philippines)

Over a decade ago, I was in my mid-20s and working as a TV segment producer on a show for a major TV network. This stint allowed me to travel to some of the best places, including Cagayan, one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in the Philippines. The trip was so memorable for me, I’d always wanted to return. I guess I manifested it because in 2019, I joined a familiarization trip organized by the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority ( CEZA ). I recall thinking that despite the passing years, Cagayan remained pretty much the same, generally unexplored and as splendid as I had remembered it.

Cagayan Province is located in the Cagayan Valley region in the northern part of the Philippines. Its capital is Tuguegarao City . There are different stories as to the etymology of Cagayan. One is from the term “Catagayan,” meaning “the place where tagay grows.” Tagay is a type of plant that is endemic to the northern province. On the other hand, some linguists claim that the province’s name was derived from the local words for “river,” such as karayan , kayan , kayayan , and kalayan .

Cagayanos are mostly of Ilocano descent who migrated from the Ilocos Region. The second largest community is the Ibanag, while the minor population comprises the Malawis, Itawits, Gaddangs, Aetas, and Ibatans. The primary language in Cagayan is Ilocano, followed by Ibanag, Itawit, and Tagalog.

Dubbed the Land of Smiling Beauty, Cagayan is known for its Spanish colonial heritage and Sambali or Piat festival held annually to celebrate the Christianization of the Itawis. Thanks to its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, it’s also a major ecotourism destination, particularly attracting adventure seekers for its majestic caves, fishing expeditions, and hiking trails.

1. Palaui Island

Palaui is a protected island in Santa Ana, Cagayan , covering an area of 7,145 hectares. In 1994, Palaui was declared a National Marine Reserve and was home to 90 migratory birds, 21 commercial species of fish, and about 50 hectares of corals. It gained worldwide popularity after being used as a filming location for two Survivor seasons; Survivor Blood vs. Water and Survivor Cagayan in 2013.

It was one of the places we visited during the familiariazation tour with CEZA. It took about 30 minutes to get to the island via boat from San Vicente Port.

Palaui is an excellent destination if you want to spend a day with nature. Some activities that you can do on the island are hiking, scuba diving, and enjoying the view of the rolling hills. The best attractions in Palaui are Cape Engaño Lighthouse, Anguib beach, Punta Verde, and Crocodile island.

We took a hike to the Cape Engaño Lighthouse (or Faro de Cabo Engaño). The lighthouse is not open to the public, but we were free to roam in the surrounding areas. And the view from that hill is worth the effort. There’s a 360-view of the sea and nearby islands; it was simply breathtaking.

Next we went to Punta Verde located on the other side of Palaui Island. It has an unsullied beach and numerous homesteads that accommodate tourists. If you want to see some props from the Survivor TV show, you can check out some at Punta Verde, specifically at Nature Village, where they were on display.

2. Anguib Beach

I didn’t know that Cagayan was hiding such a pristine beach that when I saw it, I was completely blown away. The beach remains largely unexploited, so ruggedly gorgeous that it can rival the more popular beaches in the Philippines.

If you want to enjoy a beautiful beach away from the crowd, you should visit Anguib. The waters here are clean and filled with marine life making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

3. Callao Cave

Callao Cave is located in Peñablanca, Cagayan, about 24 km from Tuguegarao City. It’s known for the seven-chamber show caves that were first excavated in 1980. It’s part of the Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape (PPLS), a protected area and national park.

Callao Cave is an important site in Cagayan not only for tourism purposes but also for its historical contribution. In 2007, a team of archaeologists excavated fossils of human sub-species called Callao Man or Homo Luzonensis from the late Pleistocene era from this cave. Today, tourists can visit seven chambers inside the cave, including the Chapel. This cave is perfect for beginners as it’s easy to navigate.

4. Pinacanauan River

The Pinacanauan River is a tributary of the Cagayan River that passes through the PPLS. The name means left-most in the local vernacular. It’s known for its fantastic views of karst formations and unspoiled waters.

You can go swimming or take a leisurely boat ride on this river. If you’re up for an adventure, you can do water rafting or kayaking, or ask the boatman to take you to Callao Cave where yo can go spelunking or see thousands of bats.

5. Nangaramoan Beach

Nangaramoan beach is located in Sta. Ana and it sits on the same shoreline as the other beaches, Anguib, Puzo, and Mapurao. With white golden sand, clear blue waters, and surrounded with lush greenery and rock formations, it’s no wonder it’s a favorite destination by the locals.

This is one of the beaches that you can visit in Sta. Ana. You can go on a day trip or stay overnight as there several resorts in the area. The shoreline is rocky, and the sand is coarse and filled with crushed corals, so be mindful of where you step. Nevertheless, you will enjoy the serene scenery and the picturesque beach.

6. Baggao’s Bluewater Falls and Cave

Baggao Bluewater Falls and Cave is a natural waterpark in the municipality of Baggao. It’s an underrated destination in Cagayan, where people can enjoy the waterfalls, swim in the natural pools, and explore the caves.

This park should be included in your itinerary if you’re looking for adrenaline-filled activities. Get ready to embark on an adventure where you can go trekking, river crossing, canyoneering, and spelunking.

7. Casagan Bridge & River

Casagan Bridge is located in Sta. Ana and it takes about 15 minutes to get there from the town properly. The bridge was built in 2018 on top of the Casagan Takuli River, which is the residents’ primary source of livelihood thanks to its abundant supply of edible shells and fish.

It’s one of the places we went to during the fam trip with CEZA. The bridge’s structure was made with planks of wood, steel cables, and chicken wire. It’s narrow, but light vehicles like motorbikes and bicycles can pass through it. I was able to walk over the bridge and take some photos; it swayed a little, but the bridge was sturdy, so there was nothing to worry about. This is a nice side trip when you visit Cagayan.

8. Buntun Bridge

Buntun Bridge crosses the Cagayan River from Tuguegararo city to Solana. The bridge was made with 14 Japanese steel spans. It took three administrations to complete the structure, beginning in 1959 under former President Carlos P. Garcia. Constructions continued during the term of former President Diosdado Macapagal, but it wasn’t until 1969 that it was finally finished and officially opened under former President Ferdinand Marcos.

At 1,369 m, it’s the second longest bridge in the Philippines after the San Juanico Bridge and the longest among river bridges in the country.

The bridge is the gateway to Tuguegarao City. It offers an unobstructed view of the Cagayan River; thus, the bridge became a tourist attraction in itself. It’s also a good vantage point for photographing the Sierra Madre and Cordillera mountains and the sunset.

9. Dumasag River

Dumasag River is located in Sitio Limbus, Barangay Rapuli, Sta Ana. The National Irrigation Authority originally intended the river to become a water resource for the rice fields in the area. Later on, it was developed into a tourist attraction due to its natural beauty.

Visit the Dumasag river and experience the slow and chill vibe of the province. You can go swimming here, slide down the makeshift waterslides, rent a tent, relax, and interact with the friendly locals.

If you’re up for some physical challenge in exchange for the breathtaking views of the waterfalls and a refreshing dip in the natural pools, you should visit Bucawag. You will trek through the thick forest, past several rivers and different tiers of waterfalls. The trek is going to be challenging as the rocks are slippery, but there are safety ropes along the trail so you can definitely do it.

12. St. Peter’s Cathedral

St. Peter Metropolitan Cathedral is a Baroque church built in the 18th century. It is also known as Tuguegarao Cathedral, and you can find it at Barangay Centro 10, Tuguegarao City. The church used to be the seat of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, founded by Dominican friars.

Whether religious or not, you will be astonished by the beautiful architectural design of the church. Made with sand, gravel, cement, mortar, steel, and bricks, the church has withstood the test of time, including World War II, where it suffered tremendous damage. It has since been restored and is now considered one of the most important historical landmarks in Tuguegarao city.

13. San Vicente Port (Santa Ana)

San Vicente Fish Port is an anchorage in Dugo, San Vicente Road, in the municipality of Sta Ana. This is the jump point for island-hopping activities, including the boat trip to Palaui Islands.

It stands along Rizal Street, Barangay Centro 10 in Tuguegarao and it was built with the Baroque-style in mind.

Sto. Domingo de Guzman Church in Nueva Segovia

This is a colossal church built with red bricks was built back in the late 1500s. Among the three churches that were built in Lal-lo during that time, the Santo Domingo de Guzman Church is the last one. San Jacinto de Polonia Church, Camalaniugan

It was in 1596 when the plans for the church were first drawn up. The church has weathered a lot of challenges because of the fire in 1719 and typhoon in 1845. Travel Itinerary: Cagayan Valley

Suggested 3 Day Itinerary

Cagayan Valley sits in Northeastern Luzon in the Philippines ,  between the Cordilleras and the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. There are several cheap flights to Tuguegarao City offered by budget airlines, and I recommend that you take advantage of it during family holidays or endure that long bus ride (roughly 12 hours from Manila) like what we did!

Cagayan is home to many old Spanish churches , thus a good starting point is a tour of the centuries-old Cathedral of St.Peter and Paul , the biggest Spanish-built church in Cagayan Valley located in the city proper.

For a glimpse of ancient culture, ethnography, artifacts, fossils of animals that once roamed the valley, and liturgical works in the province, head to Cagayan Provincial Museum And Historical Research Center .

Another interesting place to visit is the Basilica Minore of  Our Lady of  Piat, which is significant pilgrimage site of the devotees of the people of Cagayan Valley. You can hire a tricycle to take you there.

Aside from old churches, Cagayan Valley abounds with caves, and your trip  wouldn’t be complete without a visit to  the seven-chambered Callao Cave (entrance fee Php 20 for adults and Php 10 students & children below 12 years old).  It is said that in this cave, a much older version of the Tabon Man was unearthed here by archeologists.  I suggest visiting this place at the height of the sun so you can witness the beam of the sun glowing inside the cave from its hole above.  You can either hire a tricycle to take you to  the famous caves or opt to commute with the locals.  Fom the town proper, take a tricycle and ask the driver to drop you off in the tricycle station bound to Callao or take a jeep from Don Domingo Market . Another must-see cave located in the same area is Sierra Cave where use of  a local guide, hard hats and head lamps is required (can be rented for a minimal fee).

Unknown to many  tourists, Cagayan Valley is blessed with beautiful untouched white beaches. From Tuguegarao City , take a Florida bus or van bound to Sta.Ana, Cagayan .  These public transportation will stop at the market where you can buy food, drinks and booze before heading to  Palaui Island .  Then take a quadcycle (tricycle) to San Vicente port , the jump off point to the island. It is interesting to note that the last kilometer marker (642) up north of  Luzon is found in this port.  There, you can hire a boat to take you to the isle of enchantment – Palaui , a protected landscape and seascape nestled in the northeastern most part of  Luzon in Cagayan, Philippines. If you will only be taken  by the boat to Punta Verde (where the trail jump off to the lighthouse is located),  you need to hire a guide for  another 2-3 hour trek to the old colonial lighthouse of Cape Engaño . The trek to the lighthouse will take you through a coastal community, mangrove forest, inter-tidal zone, agricultural area, forest and some grasslands. You can also rent a boat to take you directly to Cape Engaño lighthouse.

Palaui Island ‘ s seascape and landscape is reminiscent of  Batanes, on the northeast side of the island you can see two islands: t he Dos Hermanas (two sisters). Further away you can also see Camiguin de Babuyanes island. Bring your own snorkeling gear since the waters around Palaui Island is part of a marine reserve and famous for game fishing. There is no resort in the island so it is advisable that you bring your own camping gears, tent and flashlight, and if you decide to stay overnight, do not miss the breathtaking sunrise the next day.

For those who have no camping gears, you can chose to stay in the fishing community of  Punta Verde , ask the locals for rooms for rent and experience life at night in the community. If you’re not comfortable with this idea, you can arrange with your boatman to either wait or pick you up in  Cape Engaño lighthouse and take you back to San Vicente port . Check out Jotay’s Resort or Jerolyn Resort for rooms to stay overnight.

Sta.Ana, Cagayan is home to  Cagayan Special Economic Zone, where you’ll find a casino resort, an 18-hole golf course, a theme park, and other recreational and tourism amenities.

Along Maharlika highway back to Tuguegarao City , you can get off the van or bus to the towns with old Spanish churches and do your own Visita Iglesia tour .  Camalaniugan is home to the Old Bell in the Far East, and in the town of  Lal-lo, Cagayan you’ll find another old structure- St. Dominic de Guzman Parish.  St. Philomene Church is located just along the highway in the town of  Alcala. There’s actually more Spanish churches in Cagayan which could take one day of your itinerary.  End your CagayanValley tour in the town of  Iguig (just one jeep ride away from Tuguegarao Airport ) where the Church of San Antonio de Galicia is located, the only church in the Philippines to have traditional flying buttresses.  Walk towards the side of the church in the hill where you can meditate at the serene and scenic Iguig  Calvary Hills, well-known for its massive life-size statues of  14 Stations of the Cross in a sprawling rolling hills overlooking the Cagayan River or Rio Grande de Cagayan , the longest and widest river in the Philippines, a  relaxing way to end your Cagayan Valley experience .

Pancit Batil Patong originated in Tuguegarao , Cagayan is a stir fried noodles mixed with vegetables, crushed chicharon and sunny side up egg.

Pansit Cabagan originated in Cabagan,Isabela but can be found in pansiteria in Cagayan Valley .  It’s a stir fried noodles with heavy sauce mixed with crushed chicharon and vegetables and topped with quail egg and crispy lechong kawali .

Tinubong is a cooked sticky rice cake in bamboo with coconut milk.

Pawa is a milled  galapong (a dough made with ground rice and left standing overnight to partially ferment) with sweetened ground peanut filling inside. (variants sold by vendors in Basilica Minore of  Our Lady of  Piat)

The food locals love to eat and share are just as inviting as the region’s many attractions.

Here are all the dishes and snacks you should sample when in Cagayan Valley.

At Bannawag Norte in Santiago, Isabela, a humble roadside shop called Bretania Organic Food Products sells a merienda favorite among locals— patupat .

Its owner, Jocelyn Bretania, wraps the glutinous rice in buri leaves, soaks it in water overnight, and cooks it in sugarcane juice to produce a naturally-sweetened snack.

Though the kakanin delicacy has different iterations in the northern region of the country, Bretania’s take on the rice-based delicacy guarantees the use of fresh sugarcane juice as the store is situated near a plantation.

“ I, myself, used to plant sugarcane before ,” Bretania says. “ In 2006, however, I learned how to make patupat and began selling it .”

A bundle of 13 pieces of patupat retails for Php110.

Pancit Batil Patung

“You’ve never really traveled to Tuguegarao if you’ve never had pancit batil patung ,” says Eric Lim, owner of Lokal Kanan + Pasalubong, a restaurant serving local dishes. “It’s easily the most iconic dish of the city.”

A spin on a Filipino food favorite, pancit batil patung features miki noodles with ground carabao beef or cara-beef, fried egg and other toppings, as well as a serving of  beaten egg dropped in beef broth called kaldo, hence the words patung (topping) and batil (to beat) in its name.

Both components of the dish should be present for optimal flavor, along with a side of chopped onions, soy sauce, chili, and vinegar sauce or calamansi to taste.

Panciterias often get experimental with the toppings to distinguish their version from others. They put any topping imaginable in what locals consume as a daily staple: balut or fertilized duck egg, chicharon bulaklak or crispy pork intestine, carajay or deep-fried pork belly slices, among many others.

Depending on the panciteria and choice of toppings, prices range from Php60 to Php150.

As the unofficial pancit capital of Cagayan, it’s no surprise that Tuguegarao cooks more variety of the dish than anywhere in the province. Apart from pancit batil patung , they also have what is called sinanta .

The first to offer it on a daily basis, serving it just like any other local dish is, according to Lim, is Lokal Kanan + Pasalubong’s claim to fame.

“Its origins go way back, probably even before pancit batil patung but they don’t serve it at restaurants,” he says. “It’s because it’s typically eaten during wakes or funerals.”

The noodle soup dish features flat noodles, rice vermicelli noodles, dried shrimps, clams, and atsuete or annatto. According to Lim, it’s important that the two types of noodle be present in the dish because if not, “it’s not sinanta .”

“I would liken it to laksa ,” he says. “It looks like laksa but instead of the soup being coconut milk-based, this one gets its flavor from seafood and its color from atsuete [or annatto].”

A bowl good for one person costs Php100.

The municipality of Piat in Cagayan may be famous among pilgrims for the century-old church and holy image of Our Lady of Piat, but it’s also home to an equally popular snack called pawa .

Its origins are unknown, but the root word of pawa is pau or bao in Chinese, which means “to wrap.”

True enough, the coin-sized sticky rice delicacy—typically consumed as a dessert or snack—hides sweetened peanuts inside. Its softness can be likened to mochi when still warm. To prepare, it is rolled into a ball, filled with sweet ground peanuts then steamed.

Pawa retails for Php 50 per 9-10 pieces and is taken home as pasalubong after a pilgrimage visit.

It’s called numerous names like bunog, talimuska, bukto, palileng, mori, udinga , or ipusan , but birut , as Tuguegarao locals call the goby fish, is another must-try when in Cagayan.

The small freshwater fish is black in color and can be cooked in a variety of ways: stewed in tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger and some vinegar; wrapped in banana leaves and steamed; or dipped in spiced flour and deep fried to a crunchy treat.

This dish is served for a limited time only, though. The best chance to try this is when it’s in season during the summer.

A serving good for two retails for Php 250.

LSB Buko Pie

While buko pie is not necessarily unique to Cagayan Valley, there’s a Nueva Vizcaya-based maker of this merienda favorite that’s worth trying.

LSB Restaurant and Buko Pie, located in Tuao North in the municipality of Bagabag, has a special take on the delicacy courtesy of a secret ingredient.

“ The clue is in the milk ,” says Menchie Dacanay, the restaurant’s owner. “ There are different types of milk but there’s one that’s best for buko pie .”

Much of the coconut they use is also harvested in the provincial capital, Bayombong.

Each box containing a 400-gram buko pie retails for Php 100.

“This is an iconic Vizcayano dish,” says Jehan Damasco, head chef and co-owner of Nueva Vizcaya-based restaurant, Mrs. Baker’s, on inabraw . “Everybody here knows it and eats it.”

Also called dinengdeng or bulanglang in other parts of the country, inabraw is a vegetable soup dish with string beans, eggplant, okra, jute leaves and bitter gourd, flavored with fermented fish sauce then served with fried fish.

But ingredients for inabraw can be whatever vegetable is available.

“ Whatever they want to put in the soup dish, they can. Locals have their own versions ,” Damasco says. “ Whatever was bought from the market or harvested from their backyard can be included .”

For every inabraw, bagoong or fermented fish sauce is key. At Mrs. Baker’s, Damasco and the rest of the kitchen staff make it more special than usual.

“What made our version special is we simmer our bagoong in fish bones, either fried or grilled, to give it a depth of flavor,” she explains. “ It’s like when you eat it in our restaurant, you will think that it’s your mom’s cooking .”

Each serving good for two to three diners cost Php190.

Bennek and Bildat 

Though Mrs. Baker’s offers a variety of food, from pizzas to cakes, the Nueva Vizcaya-based restaurant still serves food locals love to enjoy.

“There’s always a touch of Vizcaya in everything we serve,” Damasco says.

Native clams like bennek and bildat , for instance, are available when both are in season. Damasco and the rest of the team cooks the clams in two ways: kinilaw or raw with vinegar-based dressing, much like a Latin American ceviche , and inuram or cooked over fire.

These freshwater clams are part of what the restaurant calls the Chef’s Table, a fine dining service featuring a custom menu. The rates differ for every Chef’s Table, so it’s best to ask the staff ahead of time through their Facebook page or landline at (078) 805 3500.

Who would’ve thought that combining three native delicacies is a good idea? Apparently, the people of Diffun in Quirino did.

Putting together tupig , bibingka , and tikoy , the result is tubikoy . It’s made out of flour, ground glutinous rice, brown sugar, margarine, coconut, milk, and cheese. The result is a unique rice cake that’s just as delightful as the three delicacies individually.

A box of tubikoy retails for Php 65.

Chicharabao

Believe it or not, carabao skin, just like pork skin, can be fried into chicharon goodness. Instead of curling into crunchy morsels, fried carabao skin puffs into crisp and airy balls.

It’s enjoyable enough seasoned with salt and pepper. However, Lighthouse Cooperative, a local maker and seller of the snack, began offering it in three different flavors: garlic, onion and vinegar, and hot and spicy. It even gave its now well-known name, chicharabao , which is a portmanteau of chicharon and carabao.

Abundant in Tuguegarao and pasalubong centers all over the region, an 80-gram pack of any flavor retails for Php 40.
