Falmouth, Jamaica Cruise Port

falmouth jamaica cruise port

The port in Falmouth is unique in that it was designed as a joint venture between the Port Authority of Jamaica and the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. This design makes the port an entertaining destination in and of itself.

The Historic Falmouth Cruise Port area is gated, and houses many stores, restaurants and bars that are popular with cruise passengers! Outside of the gates, you’ll find Old Town, where you can walk and visit some of the local landmarks.

With only two berths, this port is less busy than the nearby Montego Bay and Ocho Rios ports of call.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About the Falmouth Cruise Port

Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

The country of Jamaica has its own currency, the Jamaican Dollar (abbreviated J$). However, like most Caribbean islands, in the Falmouth port, vendors will accept U.S. dollars as well.

The official language spoken in Jamaica is English, a result of the country’s many years under British rule. However, while English is the official language, don’t be surprised if you hear Jamaican Patois, a local creole language, spoken in informal settings.

The time zone on the island of Jamaica (and in the city of Falmouth) is the Eastern Time Zone. (EST)

The island of Jamaica has a hot and humid tropical climate. The average high temperatures range from 80-86 degrees F with lows between 75-80 degrees F.

Humidity in Falmouth is constantly on the high side, ranging between 75 to 78%.

Getting Around Falmouth, Jamaica

Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

As cruise ship passengers exit the cruise ship into the Falmouth cruise port you’ll enter a gated retail complex. Passengers concerned about safety can feel comfortable within this gated area.

Just outside the gates is the historical town of Falmouth. It’s easy to walk around “Old Town” Falmouth. However, cruise passengers will want to use the usual caution when walking down the streets or alleyways.

To visit beyond the port of Falmouth, it’s best to book shore excursions through your cruise line or a reputable third party tour provider.

The gated retail complex in Falmouth is easy to get around on foot and is also wheelchair accessible.

Public Transit

Just before you exit the main terminal for both piers, you’ll find an information booth and a large lot where you can meet tour buses and vans for shore excursions.

Nearby you will find a fixed-rate taxi stand, with non-haggling rates posted to nearby sites.

You can also catch a bus from Falmouth to Montego Bay on the Montego Bay Metro. The trip will take about an hour, but public transportation should be used cautiously since there are not many buses and departure times available.

The 10 Best Falmouth Shore Excursions

You can experience Jamaica’s unique culture through music, food, and activities in Falmouth. Here are some of the best Falmouth Shore Excursions.

1. Hike the Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios

dunn's river falls, jamaica

The incredible terraced waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and makes for epic photos. The falls at this natural phenomenon are 180 feet high and 600 feet long and takes about an hour and a half to climb to the top.

Tour guides are available to help you climb and document your adventure with photos and videos available for purchase. Be sure to wear a swimsuit and leave your phone/camera in the provided lockers because you are certain to get wet.

Transportation to Dunns River from Falmouth port will take about an hour in each direction, which will be included in your excursion.

2. Bamboo Rafting on Martha Brae River

Jamaica bamboo river rafting

Although the legend of the Martha Brae River includes treasure hunters and a witch, this excursion is more about relaxation than adventure.

A guide with a long pole will direct your bamboo raft in the calm waters of Martha Brae River as you relax on a comfortable seat. Not only will you get to see the lush Jamaican countryside, but you’ll also get to hear entertaining stories, historical information, and possibly a song or two from your guide.

The Martha Brae River is only 6 miles south of Falmouth and is a great place to spend time in Jamaica.

3. Swing into the Blue Hole

This natural wonder is the best place for an adventurous excursion. You’ll hike up to a waterfall that ends in a gorgeous blue pool or “hole.” There are rope swings and cliff diving spots available.

The rocks can be slippery so good closed-toed shoes are a must. The waters are rough so only strong swimmers should attempt to jump in.

Blue Hole is about an hour and a half drive from the Falmouth port.

4. Snorkel at Doctors Cave Beach

Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

Doctor’s Cave Beach is the most popular beach day excursion for cruise travelers! This beautiful beach is about a 45-minute drive from the Falmouth port. If you’re going on a family cruise, this is a great excursion option.

You’ll find calm areas as well as optional beach activities, like water trampolines and kayaks. If you go with an organized day tour, the entry cost is typically included.

However, if you go on your own or with a guide, the entry to Doctors Cave Beach costs $7. There are loungers and umbrellas available to rent as well as snorkeling equipment.

Food service is offered on the beach, however, be advised that it is often slow. It’s a good idea to order before you are hungry.

At various times these caves have been known as the Runaway Bay Caves, Rum Caves, and Dairy Caves. They are currently named for the green algae that grow on their walls.

7. Grab a Jamaican Patty at Juici Patties

This local favorite is a must-visit for Jamaican cuisine while you are docked in Falmouth. Ground beef, chicken, shrimp, or vegetables are mixed with spices and cooked inside a flaky pastry shell (like a hand pie).

We can attest to trying these out, and they are good!

8. Try Traditional Jamaican Food at Pepper’s Jerk Center

Kill two Jamaican flavors with one stone at Pepper’s Jerk Center, a short 8-minute walk or 3-minute taxi ride from the Falmouth Port.

The customer service at this restaurant is great and the jerk chicken and rum punch will make you wish you had a longer port stay.

9. Good Hope Plantation/Eco Adventure Outpost

Situated on a 2000-acre former sugar plantation, the Chukka Eco Adventure Outpost at Good Hope will give you a glimpse into Falmouth’s 18th century history and the opportunity to have some adventures.

You can explore the immaculate grounds, tour the Good Hope Great House or participate in zip lining, bamboo rafting, river tubing, waterslides, and rum tasting.

Good Hope is a 25-minute drive from the Falmouth port and is a wonderful place to see the natural beauty of Jamaica.

10. Shop and Sample at the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port

Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

This port was designed to be a destination itself, with a wide open area between brick buildings in the British Georgian architecture style commonly found in Jamaica.

Within the gated area you’ll find live music, food stands, restaurants, bars, arts and crafts vendors, and plenty of souvenirs. Try some famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and Jamaican rum. There are enough stores to keep you busy for several hours in this clean and well-maintained port.

One important thing to note, Margaritaville used to be a popular port attraction in Falmouth. Unfortunately, this location closed permanently in January 2023.

carnival cruise falmouth jamaica excursions

I was talking with Patrice Bailey prior to my landing in Jamaica on a cruise with RC. She recommended me to take the Dunn's Falls tour as my kids are young. We were given instructions what to do when we got off the boat. We found our tour guide Nicole. We read a lot of things about Jamaica on the internet. Its NOT true! Jamaica is the most beautiful lush country you will ever go to. Its absolutely beautiful. the people are wonderful and its safe in Jamaica. I had a 8 year old and 12 year old and no one bugged us. Everyone was so wonderful with my kids, cant say enough good things about the Jamaican people. Our Guide Nicole she knows everything about Jamaica! She lead us to a bus with a nice driver and it was air conditioned. The drive was great, nice and smooth roads. We were offered drinks in the bus which was a nice bonus. The staff from Patrice Bailey really wants you to have a great time. They take what they do so seriously. They make sure you are taken care of and you have a good time. Patrice has amazing staff. We had the worst time on this cruise, Jamaica was the only sunshine of our holiday and we will forever remember this wonderful place and its people. We will definitely be back again to visit! If your going to Jamaica, make arrangements for Patrice Bailey to take care of you, wont be disappointed.

Ultimate excursion, AWESOME experience O'shea, Perry, and others were amazing. This was my first time and I would definitelydo this again. I felt safe and well supported by the crew.

carnival cruise falmouth jamaica excursions

We visited Jamaica this past summer on a Royal Caribbean cruise. We had two excursions planned for the day, one was to the caves and the second was the Dunn's River Falls. The experience at the falls was spectacular and the excursions personnel was always very helpful to our needs.

I can not say enough good things about Patrice Bailey and her staff. The first time we had Kay as our guide but this this time we had Ken as our driver and I do not recall the name of our guide. We disembarked the ship (Disney Fantasy) first thing in the morning and went straight to the tent in the parking lot. Our guide and driver met us by name and were immediately ready for us. We had 26 people in our party and thought we would be in two vehicles but were pleasantly surprised to find out they had a bus big enough for all of us. We had plenty of water for the kids and red stripe for the adults. It was about 1 1/2 hours to get to Blue Hole and the guide we requested was waiting for us. His name is Ken with help from Andre as well from Island Gully Falls. He is AMAZING!!! We specifically requested Glen for our group because he is great with the smaller kids. On our first trip my youngest was only 2 and he jumped all day with Glen. He carried him up and down the falls and my son was so comfortable with him it was incredible. I was extremely happy to see we were able to have him again. With a group of our size we did let smaller groups get ahead of us and we spent about 2 1/2 hours at the falls. It was just as amazing as I remembered the first time and again, Glen had my youngest with him the whole time. It was comforting knowing that Glen was encouraging us to take our time and not rush so no one was injured. After our time at Blue Hole it took us about 45 minutes to get to our lunch destination. Our guide was able to call our order in ahead and it was waiting for us when we arrived. Scotchies is such an interesting and authentic place for lunch and has been featured in Food and Wine magazine. We sat outside under a beautiful tree and enjoyed our Jamacian Jerk. We had a variety of food from chicken, sausage, pork, corn on the cob, vegetables and the best festival (like corn bread, breadsticks). Everyone found something they enjoyed. After lunch we loaded back up again for another 45 minutes back to port. This portion seemed to fly by as most of our party slept the rest of the way back. I will admit I was worried because I had planned this for only 10 people last time and having 26 people I was concerned that some people would not enjoy it as much as we did. I am happy to say, I think everyone had an amazing time. When we return to Jamaica I am 100% sure we will be booking with Patrice Bailey again. Everything was exactly what we wanted and we could not have been more pleased!

Since the re-opening of this historic cruise port in 2011, Falmouth Jamaica has become a popular, year-round destination and port of call for many large cruise vessels.  Royal Caribbean International funded the pier construction for the Falmouth cruise port but the port is also used by other cruise lines including Holland America, Disney, Princess, Norwegian, and MSC.

The Falmouth Cruise Port

Many visitors won’t have to look much further for something to do than the port itself. Part of the ports redevelopment was to include themed retail shopping, restaurants, recreation, and more, all within the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port.

Enjoy shopping along 120,000 square feet of retail space full of shops, restaurants, and more, all ready to serve you. Before you go, download this map of the Port of Falmouth . It shows you where the shops are, and where to find other things like the ship terminal, trolley station, taxi shelter, and more.

Must-Try Local Restaurants

Visiting Jamaica isn’t complete if you don’t take the opportunity to sample some of the local fare. Here are some must-try restaurants in Falmouth that we highly recommend.

1. Donna’s Caribbean Restaurant

Originally the home of Club Nazz, this restaurant has been taken over with new management by the restaurant chain most popular for their Jamaican food in Southern Florida, Donna’s Caribbean Restaurant . Falmouth is currently the only Jamaican location for this restaurant. The food and service here is delicious. You’ll find plenty of favorite Jamaican dishes served here, and they even have free Wi-Fi.

2. Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville

Visit a little paradise created just for cruise passengers to enjoy in Falmouth: Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville .

Channel your inner pirate in Margaritaville as you visit the Pirate Bar, eat some deliciously spicy Jamaican food that is out of this world, lounge in the margarita-shaped pool or get a drink at the swim-up bar. You can also get your own custom souvenirs and shop at the retail store for more.

The possibilities are endless here in Margaritaville. Warning, though: you may not want to ever leave.

3. Pepper’s Jerk Center

For some of the best authentic Jamaican food located within walking distance of the Port of Falmouth, be sure to visit Pepper’s Jerk Center .

Located inside what used to be slave quarters, the owner, Clint ‘Top Man’ Rennie has made this restaurant the top place to go to in Falmouth for jerk chicken and pork. Locals and visitors alike swarm to this restaurant every day to enjoy the best Jamaican food and atmosphere around.

4. Leon’s Lobster Hut

Leon’s Lobster Hut offers the best and freshest lobster, caught locally off the Jamaican coast. The restaurant is just steps away from the white sands of Royalton Beach, offering wonderful panoramic views of the ocean in all it’s beauty.

5. Glistening Waters Restaurant

The Glistening Waters Resort and Restaurant , named so for the Luminous Lagoon that surrounds them both, provides both a wonderful place to stay in Jamaica, and a great place to eat. If, by chance, your stay in Falmouth is overnight, book your overnight stay at Glistening Waters for a once in a lifetime experience.

Be sure to come to the restaurant for a delicious Jamaican dinner, followed by an evening tour of the luminous lagoon, which is beautifully lit by the bio-luminescent micro-organisms found in the water. It is a sight to behold, and can only be truly appreciated in person.

When you begin to crave something sweet, head on over to Tortuga , the best dessert and sweet spot in all of Falmouth. Well known for their rum cakes, they serve about a dozen different kinds, along with various coffees, chocolates, and more.

Be sure to buy extras to take with you, or go online and order some to be shipped to your home. That way, once your cruise is over, you’ll have some tasty cakes and sweets waiting for you at home!

Great Houses and Estates

7. rose hall plantation.

The gorgeous Rose Hall Plantation is among one of the best things to do when you come into the Falmouth cruise port. It’s located in Montego Bay about a 30 minute drive west of the port and sits on a 6,600 acre plantation.

This estate was once home to Annie Palmer, who the Jamaicans nicknamed “The White Witch of Rose Hall”. Rumored to have been steeped in black magic and witchcraft, and used such to kill dozens of lovers, it is believed that she still haunts the estate to this day.

You can visit just for the tours, golfing, shopping, and restaurant, or book an overnight stay (if you are able) at the all-inclusive resort. Will you see the White Witch? Who knows?

8. Good Hope Estate

Not to be outdone by the wonders of the Rose Hill Plantation, Good Hope Estate should also be at the top of anyone’s list while in Falmouth, especially adventure seekers .

Good Hope Estate was once owned by sugarcane farmer and slave trader, John Tharp. Today, it is a thriving citrus farm and park for anyone to visit and enjoy. Visitors can enjoy a historical tour of the estate, go zip lining through the trees, or drive ATVs all over the property.

Photography enthusiasts will love the panoramic views that the estate offers of Queen of Spain Valley, the Cockpit Mountains, and more.

Various Falmouth Excursions and Attractions

9. mystic mountain.

Mystic Mountain is one of the most cruise friendly places to visit during your port of call visit to Falmouth Jamaica. They will help you have the most fun ever and still get you back to your boat on time.

Go bobsledding, ziplining, hiking, or take a tour of the Dunn’s River Falls. You can also visit the Lookout Tower, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, nature trails, and more. You can even book combo tours that take you to various places at once, and will still allow you to get back to your cruise before it ships off again.

10. Dunn’s River Falls

dunn river falls in ocho rios

Speaking of Dunn’s River Falls, this is one of the most popular shore excursions when visiting Falmouth. The waterfalls are about 180ft high and 600ft long, and if you take a tour of the falls, you will ascend the falls, made up of natural stone steps, as a group. It’s recommended that you wear water shoes or water sneakers for this excursion, as the falls can be rather slippery.

If climbing the falls isn’t for you, enjoy a relaxing swim in the natural pools at the base of the falls, and just have some fun.

11. Rio Bueno River

Take a short trip to the Rio Bueno River, right between Trelawney and Montego Bay. You can book either a rafting or tubing excursion, which is where the adventure begins.

There will be many photographic opportunities as you make your way down the river, so make sure to have your (hopefully waterproof) camera at the ready. You’ll pass under the Old Colonial Bridge, the Bengal Beach, and various other sights. When the tour is over, you’ll be dropped off at Bengal Beach where you can hang out, go for a swim, or get something to eat.

12. Martha Brae

For another amazing rafting adventure, you can go to Martha Brae for an hour long rafting experience with the entire family. This one is located a little closer to the cruise port, so if your visit to Falmouth is short, this would be a great way to experience Jamaica, maybe stop somewhere to eat afterwards, then get back to your ship on time.

This rafting tour is a little more laid back than others, and the rafts are stable enough for those who can’t swim to enjoy. You’ll also be able to visit Miss Martha’s Herb Garden during your trip and receive a handcrafted souvenir from the Rafter’s Village before you have to go back to your ship.

13. Green Grotto Caves

The Green Grotto Caves once served as a hideout for slaves, as well as a place to store barrels of rum during World War II. Now, the underground waters and tunnels, filled with miles of limestone formations, stalagmites, and stalactites is one of the most popular attractions in Ochos Rios.

The tour only takes an hour, leaving you with plenty of time to do something else before your ship leaves.

14. Swamp Safari

Swamp Safari is a must-visit for any animal lovers, or fans of the James Bond movie “Live and Let Die”.

Just a short walk from the cruise pier is the Charles Swaby’s Swamp Safari and Crocodile Farm. Over 80 crocodiles live there, bred and raised by Charles Swaby. When you visit, you can take a tour of the farm, watch feedings, hold a baby crocodile, and even become friends with a boa constrictor.

For those Bond movie lovers, at the end of the tour you’ll be able to watch a reenactment of a scene from the movie, a scene which was originally shot there.

15. Windsor Caves & Research Center

The same man who owned the sugar fields of Good Hope Estate also owned the Windsor Estate, which was a cattle farm back in the 1700s.

The Windsor Caves, though beautiful to behold, are currently inaccessible to visitors due to the large amount of bat guano that collects on the cave floor. The cave also has the protentional to transmit potentially fatal disease to visitors called histoplasmosis, so entrance is reserved for researchers and licensed spelunkers.

You can, however, visit the research center , and even dine with the biologists who study there during a “Meet the Biologists” dinner they have at Windsor. This would be a great experience for aspiring scientists to enjoy and learn from. Learn about what research is currently being done and what they are doing to help conserve the nature around them.

16. Paintball Jamaica

For families who love a little bit of adventure and competition, you must book a visit to Paintball Jamaica , the best and only paintball experience you’ll find in Jamaica.

They offer a variety of experience packages for kids, families, and for large groups. Splatmaster is a low-impact paintball game for kids ages 8-13, or you can play as a family on one of the adult fields. This is a great team-building exercise, which is why it’s great for families to participate.

If you only have a few hours to explore and visit when arriving in Falmouth, your best option is to go on a tour around the town or at one of the many attractions.

We’ve already mentioned a few tours you can take, but those are not the only options. There’s history tours, culinary tours, trolley tours, and so much more.

Here’s a list of tours that you should check into and participate in. Many range from an hour to about three hours, so decide which would best fit your time frame so you don’t miss your ship leaving.

17. Heritage (or Historic) Tours

For those lovers of history, if you have a short time to spare, going on a historic or heritage tour around Falmouth is probably the best way to get to know the area and maybe even do a little shopping.

You can book a guided walking tour, or get a map and take a self-tour around Falmouth. There is so much history and architecture to view and enjoy. You’ll want to have your camera with you (as well as some good walking shoes) so you don’t forget anything you’ve seen and experienced.

If you’d rather not walk, there’s a heritage tour you can book directly from the port and will take you around historic Falmouth by trolley. This 60-minute tour picks you up at the port. During the tour you will see the Phoenix Foundry, William Knibb Baptist Church, an old Jewish Cemetery, famous residences once owned by well known citizens of Falmouth, and much more.

18. Jamaica Culinary Tours

These food tours are a collaboration with the historic walking tours you can take around town. Jamaica Culinary Tours last about two and a half hours, along which you’ll be able to sample all kinds of local cuisine, learn about plantation life, discover the various cooking methods that Jamaicans use, and more. All while learning about the history behind Falmouth and it’s cuisine.

They are able to make accommodations for any vegetarians in your group, but unfortunately there are no substitutions for vegans, or those with restrictive food allergies like gluten or dairy-free.

These food tours run every week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. If you’re ship comes in on a day they don’t normally operate don’t worry, because they do offer tours on cruise days.  Price is $55 per person, $35 for kids 12 and under.

19. Bob Marley Tour

Bob Marley fans will want to take the opportunity to learn about your favorite reggae musician while in Falmouth. First, you can go on a one and a half hour drive to the mountain village Nine Miles, where bob Marley was born and raised. See where he lived and died, and hear all kinds of stories about his life and music.

After the tour, drive over to the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, where you can take yet another tour (75 minutes for this one). Here there are exhibitions, a theater, a gift shop, and a café where you can stop to eat before heading back to the ship.

20. Hampden Estate Rum Tour

The Hampden Estate is another large estate in the Falmouth region that holds a lot of history for the area. Originally founded in 1753 it is one of the oldest rum manufacturing estates in town.

The estate offers a two hour tour, including lunch, where you can learn about the history of rum, the history of the estate, and how rum is made. You will be able to sample the rum made there at the end of the tour. As such, only those 18 years or older will be able to participate

21.  Rois Lagoon Kayak Tour

Nature and water lovers will enjoy taking a tour around Rois Lagoon in Falmouth by kayak. After a brief safety orientation on how to use the kayak, you’ll go on a journey like none other through the wetlands of Falmouth and learn some of nature’s secrets.

Visit the Pirates Cover, have some delicious jerk chicken, see some amazing art at the art gallery and gift shop. Learn about mangroves, raid the pirate’s treasure in the cove, and be entertained by the flying fish.

There is so much more you’ll get to see and do on this kayak tour, so you certainly don’t want to miss out.

22. Burwood Beach

Burwood Beach is probably the only public beach available right now in Falmouth. It’s about ten minutes from the port close to the Blue Waters Beach Club .

Access to the beach is only $5 per person, and they have bathrooms, showers, and a place to change clothes available. Just take a few hours to relax on the beautiful white beach sands while you listen to the waves. Don’t forget to bring your sunblock and an umbrella, as it can get very hot there.

23. Doctor’s Cave

Doctors Cave Beach jamaica

If you don’t mind spending a little extra money and going out a bit further, book an excursion out to Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay. General admission is $6 per person, $3 for children under 12 years old.

At Doctor’s Cave you’ll find a restaurant and bar, bathrooms and showers, umbrellas you can rent, and even a Starbucks coffee shop.

If you wish to use the clubhouse on the beach, they charge $150 a year for an individual membership, and $250 a year for a family membership. Memberships also include use of the indoor gym. These would be great if you make frequent trips to Falmouth and Jamaica throughout the year.

24. Jacob Taylor Beach

For a truly Jamaican beach experience, be sure to visit the Jacob Taylor Beach , just before the Silver Sands Community. There is also a fisherman village nearby, so while you’re there, you can watch the fisherman as they head out on their boats to catch fish for the day.

You can take your time here and relax as you watch the fishermen. Get a snack, get something to drink, and maybe even have the wood carver make something for you. There’s plenty to see and do at the Jacob Taylor Beach that will be truly unforgettable.

Whether you’ll only be in port for a few hours, or you get to stay overnight, there are plenty of things for you to see and do while in Falmouth. You can hang out right at the port and not go anywhere else, if your wish. Or you can venture out and take a tour of Falmouth, visit one of the great estates, go fishing, kayaking, tubing, or just chill at the beach.

Thrill seekers can go on ATV rides, zip lining, or bobsledding through the rain forests of Falmouth. Witness a haunting at Rose Hill, or visit the birthplace of the King of Reggae.

Don’t forget to get something to eat and taste some really amazing authentic Jamaican food. Go shopping for souvenirs to bring back home for yourself and your loved ones. Some of the tours in Falmouth even offer customized souvenirs.

You don’t want to miss out on what the most popular port city in all of Jamaica has to offer, so take the chance to explore it while you can.

Falmouth (Jamaica) Cruise Port Guide and Review (2023)

Cruise ships docked in Nassau cruise port

Basic guide to Falmouth cruise port in Jamaica: must-know, where is the port, what's at the cruise terminal, how to get around, and what's within walking distance. Local flavors, quick bites, and dining.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 30, 2023

Unlike what you may read in many blogs and reviews, the cruise port in Falmouth is the safest and more hospitable to explore on your own in all of Jamaica. And with the best location to explore the island.

Cruise passengers that have never been to a far from an affluent Caribbean island may feel intimidated and not comfortable walking around by themselves. But, as you can see in the photo below, no one will bother you.

Falmouth Cruise Port Must-Know

For decades, Jamaica - and its cruise ports in particular - has been having a very bad reputation for aggressive, pushing and even harassing local population trying to sell any and everything - tours, taxi rides to the beach, guide walking along you, take you to taste jerk chicken or red strip beer and, of course, offering all types of drugs (specially ganja as marijuana is called in Jamaica).

Old Town, Falmouth Port

It is true that a handful of Jamaicans hanging around the port areas in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, display this type of aggressive, pushy attitude and that, sometimes, individual characters can become a difficult plaster to get rid of. It is known that such attitude has spoiled many cruisers' unique day in Jamaica and deterred many from exploring the port on their own. However , and surprisingly for many, this is NOT a reality when docking at Falmouth Cruise Port.

Many savvy cruisers that have been in other Jamaican ports always find it surprising how 'normal' the local population is in Falmouth and believe that the population has been 'instructed' to leave cruise travelers alone. The Editor - who lived in Jamaica in the 1990's - still finds surprising how civil and hospitable the local population is in Falmouth by comparison with the other Jamaican ports. And how enjoyable it is to be able to walk around the historical town.

Street, Falmouth Old Town

This said, cruise travelers should understand, when visiting Falmouth, that Jamaica is not Grand Cayman or St. Martin, where you have great public transportation, it is easy to explore on your own and go pretty much anywhere hassle-free with friends or family. To explore Jamaica beyond the Falmouth Terminal and the Historical Town is not as easy. Unless you have been in Jamaica before and are familiar with local culture, it is advisable to explore the main attractions either on a tour (booked onboard or online) or with a certified taxi driver that you can get at the terminal.

The port and what's at the cruise terminal

When docking in Falmouth, the port area/terminal is one of the main attractions for the day and many a cruiser doesn't venture much farther or exit the port gates to explore the Old Town, which is easy to do on your own and, above all, safer than other Jamaican ports.

After a major redevelopment in 2011, the old docking area was officially renamed Historic Falmouth Cruise Port and is now a large retail shopping complex. The port has a triangular shape with two piers at an angle, the exit for both at one end and the exit to the town at the southern side. The area between the piers has a very nice ambiance with large squares, shaded arcades, shops (and more shops), a few places to enjoy a quick bite and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville with its typical bar, restaurant, pool, and shop. All these are housed in brick buildings designed in the style of British Georgian architecture that recreate the Colonial ambiance found in the Town just outside the gates.

Photo of Shop at Falmouth Port, Jamaica

Shop, Cruise Terminal

A large part of this area of the Terminal is occupied by the shops that can be found in most Caribbean ports - the typical international brands , fine jewelry, designer boutiques, duty free shops, and gift shops like Diamonds International and Tanzanite, Breitling, Colombian Emeralds, Cariloha, Pirana Joe or Del Sol. The cruise traveler will also find a few local shops , kiosks and stalls with exclusively Jamaican souvenirs. You may find a few crafts in these shops but if you like genuine, handcrafted works, the best will be found at the Crafts Market (close by Margaritaville) or in Town.

How to get around in Falmouth

One of the best characteristics of the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port is the convenience and offer of a good number of services to help the traveler to explore the Town and all top attractions close by and as far as Ocho Rios or Negril.

Photo of Information Desk Cruise Port Falmouth, Jamaica

Information Desk, Cruise Terminal

Just before you exit the main terminal building for both piers, there is an Information Desk with an official representative to provide all info you may need and also with maps and brochures - this is the place to get the self-guided Walking Tour Map , clearly highlighting the path and major landmarks. Naturally, there is a large lot for tour buses and vans next to a meeting point for all booked on shore excursions . This meeting point is on the left side, opposite Margaritaville, and is where tours are dispatched by onboard staff and tour operators.

For those that prefer to explore on your own, there are some good alternatives. Close to the Shorex Meeting point, you will find a Taxi Stand , with Fixed Rates, and also a Bus Service to Montego Bay with stops next to the Craft Market, the Beach, the Hip Strip and Rose Hall (shops). The bus fare is per person - $ 20 Round Trip . The Taxi Fares are per car (1 to 4 pax) with an extra for each additional passenger. Don't think about haggling prices with these authorized/certified taxi drivers as the Fares are Fixed and clearly displayed.

Photo of Trolley Tour in Falmouth, Jamaica

Trolley Tour, Cruise Terminal

It is also in this area that you can buy your ticket and get on the Trolley Tour of Falmouth - a great way to discover the Old Town's Landmarks. This 1-hour guided tour ($25 per person) allows the visitor to literally see and learn about Falmouth's rich historical heritage with a stop to visit the St. Peter’s Anglican Church .

If you prefer a less modern transportation, there is also a Horse Drawn Buggy Tour . Two other interesting guided tours are likewise available: the Falmouth Food Tour and a visit to the Jewish Cemetery.

Local flavors and dining

Although most cruise travelers prefer to have food and drinks onboard - after all it is paid for - Jamaica's cuisine is well known for its unique flavors and at the Terminal there are a few places where you can taste some exclusive specialties of the Island.

Photo of Appleton Rum Bar in Falmouth, Jamaica

Island Brew Cafe, Cruise Terminal

If you never tasted a genuine Jamaica Pattie this is an opportunity not to be missed - these are available at a couple of kiosks and also at Nathan's Famous and Tastee Patties. Naturally, Margaritaville also serves Jamaican food and so do a few other nice spots like Quiznos. A real Jamaican flavor tasting has to include the Editor's top choices - rum and coffee . Both have wonderful spots to be enjoyed on your return to the ships or if you prefer to stay inside the gated area. The Appleton Rum Estate has a very nice seating area where patrons can enjoy a handful of different flavors of Rum from the most famous Jamaican distillery.

Photo of Jablue Cafe Falmouth, Jamaica

Jablue Cafe, Cruise Terminal

Not far from this, Blue Mountain coffee is served in a shaded area under the arcades - Jablue is one of the best brands of this unique coffee and, besides enjoying a cup, you can buy in the shop Blue Mountain coffee considered by many as the Beluga of all coffees. If you just want to quick taste of Blue Mountain Coffee, the Island Brew Cafe is a good place to go. There are a few other places close by where genuine Jamaican food can be savored - like Nazz Club and Restaurant in Town or, just a few miles away, the Restaurant at Glistening Waters - but for Rum and Coffee the Terminal has great offers.

Walking to Falmouth Town from the Terminal

Photo of Policemen in Falmouth, Jamaica

Policemen, Old Town

If planning to explore Falmouth on your own, do not miss on the way to the exiting gates the panels with some interesting historical facts - it was here that the Editor discovered that Usain Bolt was born in Falmouth or that the infamous Welsh pirate Henry Morgan become a gentrified Governor of Jamaica. Once outside the port gates, with security reminding that you need to have your ship card to re-enter, the cruise traveler will be on Seaboard Street and it will not be usual to see local police in their dapper uniforms. Right away, you will also come across vendors offering souvenirs, crafts and colorful clothing for adults and children. The street right in front of the exit gate (Falmouth St.) will take you straight to the heart of the Historical Town - in less than a 5-minute walk you will be on Water Square .

MSC Grandiosa will begin seven-night Caribbean itineraries in December 2025 for the winter sailing season while MSC Seashore remains, but sailing short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings to Nassau and the cruise line’s private island Ocean Cay.

It’s the largest MSC ship yet to sail from the port. The Meraviglia Plus-class vessel is among the top 20 largest cruise ships worldwide at 181,541 gross tons and a maximum passenger capacity of 6,334. It debuted in 2019 and features a water park, five pools, nine hot tubs, spa, the MSC Yacht Club exclusive area and a Lego partnership in its kids clubs.

One of the more dramatic features is the 323-foot-long Galleria Grandiosa promenade with an LED projection screen over the length of the walkway. The ship features 10 restaurants including the Butcher’s Cut steakhouse, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Kaito Sushi, Kaito Tepanyaki and L’Atelier Bistrot.

This is its first time taking on North American duties, and its arrival coincides with the debut out of PortMiami of the MSC World America, which will be even larger.

“The Winter 2025-2026 season will mark our largest presence in the U.S. to date, and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that,” said MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez in a press release. “We know people sailing from Central Florida want options, and we’re delighted to offer them two of our most modern and glamorous ships with itineraries that will appeal to everyone from first-time to seasoned cruisers.”

MSC first began sailing from the port in 2021, joining mainstays Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. It has shuffled several ships for short runs for what Rodríguez said was a taste of what MSC has to offer. That has included MSC Divina, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seashore.

The family-owned cruise line has its roots in Europe, so the line plays up its “unique international flavor” compared with the other lines, while also touting its environmental efforts such as can be found on the private Bahamas island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. It is undergoing a major expansion effort to support excursions and on-island activities.

MSC Grandiosa will trade off alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries. Eastern trips will visit Nassau and Ocean Cay, Bahamas; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands. Western trips will visit Nassau; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; George Town, Cayman Islands; Montego Bay and Falmouth, Jamaica; and Belize City, Belize.

“We are honored that MSC Cruises chose Port Canaveral for the North American debut of their magnificent MSC Grandiosa,” said Port Canaveral CEO John Murray in the release. “Expanding their homeport fleet at Port Canaveral underscores their confidence in our partnership and shared commitment to success.”

The growing port for a time took on the title of world’s busiest cruise port after the pandemic, and while PortMiami has since retaken that title, Port Canaveral continues to expand its ship offerings.

The last sailing season saw 16 ships that either homeported year-round or sailed seasonally, and it expects that number to grow to 19 for the 2024-2025 sailing season, including the debuts of Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises this fall.
