An Essential Guide to France's Château La Coste

chateau la coste wine tour

Very few vineyards offer as much as Château La Coste in France ; this place is a destination in its own right – there simply aren’t enough superlatives to describe the place. It’s where you’ll be able to live the lifestyle you dream of, if only for a few hours. It’s easy to spend an entire day here, and we’ll show you how. Here’s our guide on how to make the most of your visit.

Château La Coste is close to the town of Aix en Provence , deep in the heart of southern France. The area is well known for its warm climate, amazing light (the region has attracted numerous painters), tasty food and wonderful wine, all of which this place represents. Here you’ll be able to enjoy great food, look at amazing architecture and view wonderful art – and of course go on one of the wine tours.

Take a guided tour of the architecture

When Château La Coste opened, renowned artists and architects were encouraged to come and design permanent installations in places around the grounds that they loved, and the results are spectacular. The tour is open every day and you can walk around the trail admiring the works of art. Wear comfortable footwear (be warned, the trail isn’t flat) and take lots of water in the summer. Louise Bourgeois’ ‘ Crouching Spider ‘ is the first thing you see upon arrival, and there are permanent works here by, among others, Tracey Emin, Tadao Ando and Frank Gehry .

‘Multiplied Resistance Screened,’ a playful installation by Liam Gillick (installed 2010)

There is now a new installation by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei called ‘Ruyi Path.’ Using stone from the Old Port in Marseille , a new pathway weaves through the trees connecting two ancient paths on the site.

The new installation, Ruyi Path, by artist Ai Weiwei, symbolizes power and good fortune

Eat at one of the amazing restaurants

The landscape designer, Louis Benech, has created an immense state-of-the-art kitchen garden , which grows fresh, seasonal, local vegetables for use in the restaurants. There are two places to eat. The more laid-back Terrace , which serves fresh salads, soups and home-made tarts, is outside and an ideal place to sit and marvel at the gardens. It also has live music in the summer.

Sit at the laid-back Terrace restaurant, enjoying the home-made food, fresh from the kitchen garden

The Tadao Ando restaurant, on the other hand, is more of a spectacle – an eating extravaganza. It manages to serve Provençal and Mediterranean dishes of outstanding quality without being overly stuffy or extremely overpriced, while still happily serving up pasta for the kids. Enjoy the fresh fish, divine pâté , or luscious beef and wash it all down with Château La Coste wines. Make sure to book in advance and go for a table on the terrace if the weather is good (they even bring you blankets or sun hats if necessary). Built by the architect Tadao Ando, it’s surrounded by water and interesting architecture, overlooking the vineyards beyond. Not to be missed. Check out the menu here .

Take a workshop on art and architecture

Château La Coste runs workshops for both adults and children. Grown-ups can learn how to sketch landscape or architecture, and kids can run around the amazing grounds collecting twigs and leaves to turn into beautifully designed living art – while parents can sit in the café appreciating the wine. There’s something for everyone here.

Visit the art gallery and shop

The Japanese architect Tadao Ando conceived the design of the main entrance and arts center . The car park is hidden underground by a large infinity pool (containing the ‘Crouching Spider’ sculpture). It’s a geometric masterpiece that houses the main restaurant and welcome center, complete with an art shop, full of wonderful gems for all ages – kids love the magnets and artistic coloring books, while adults appreciate the books on architecture and painting. An art gallery was recently opened on-site too and offers a chance to view new artists in temporary shows.

The Tadao Ando arts center is the main focus upon arrival, hiding the underground car park with a large infinity pool and housing the restaurant, welcome center and shop

Take a wine tour

It’s easy to forget that this place is beloved for its wine as much as everything else, and it takes its wine seriously and people love the results. Under the guidance of wine-maker Matthieu Cosse , the site has been completely redeveloped since 2006 and is now completely organic. Take a tour around the cutting-edge technology or, if that’s too much actions, take a wine course or a simple wine tasting , before you buy a bottle or two to take home. They even help you carry the wine to your car, and ship worldwide. The service is unpretentious, informative and very friendly.

Leave lots of time to tour the vineyards and taste the wine

Sleep at Villa La Coste

If you can’t bear to leave, the new Villa La Coste will let you stay. Opening in April, the villa has 28 suites, two new restaurants and a spa. This is luxury at its finest. They are open all year round, but hours change from summer to winter (at minimum, 10AM to 5PM), so check online or call first.

Chateau La Coste

WINE, WINE SHOP, WINE TASTING, THE ART OF WINE MAKING & APPRECIATON, BOOKSHOP, RESTAURANT, CAFE, ART & ARCHITECTURE WALK

Adhering to biodynamic principles, Château la Coste strives to preserve the terroir, protecting its fertility, safeguarding the essence of the soil. The alchemy of blending lives on in a state of the art ‘cuverie’ designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and inaugurated with the grape harvest of 2008. This latest technology ensures the natural expression of the wine and brings new life to a long tradition. In 2009 our wines were given the French organic label “AB” in recognition of the respect shown to the land along with the methods used which are in perfect harmony with nature.

THE WINE SHOP

Housed in a 19th-century farmhouse, the Wineshop of Château La Coste invites you to discover the different ranges of red, white and rosé wines produced on the domain. Share a convivial moment and enliven your senses with a wine tasting, accompanied by local delicacies. Throughout the day, our team is at the ready to answer your questions and give advice on food and wine pairings. In season, our olive oil and honey can also be tasted. The wineshop offers an original selection of products for the wine enthusiast as well as tableware, glassware and books on wine.

THE ART OF WINE MAKING AND WINE APPRECIATION

La Revue des Vins de France awarded Château La Coste the prize of Best Wine Destination in France 2015. Our team of wine experts offers you the chance to deepen your knowledge of wine-making and wine-appreciation. With a visit to the Chai de vinification of Jean Nouvel, visitors will gain a preliminary introduction to the winemaking process at Château la Coste. Also on offer are sensory workshops and in-depth courses on winemaking and wine-tasting.

THE BOOKSHOP

The bookshop offers specialist works on each of the artists and architects whose installations are on the Domain. Academic books, monographs, essays and DVD’s on principal figures and movements in contemporary art and architecture are also available. Volumes on wine, gastronomy and Provencal garden design are included as well as a selection of creative books for children. We are proud to propose a range of rare titles which will appeal to those looking for a more in-depth knowledge.

THE TADAO ANDO RESTAURANT

The team in the Tadao Ando Art Centre restaurant welcomes you every day. In this wide open luminous space, enjoy lunch at the water’s edge accompanied by Château La Coste wines, or sit on the terrace in the late afternoon with a cup of genmaicha tea and watch the sun go down across the vines.

The in-house menu highlights seasonal produce from the organic vegetable garden specially designed by Louis Benech. Provençal and Mediterranean dishes are freshly prepared in our kitchen and served throughout the day.

THE TERRACE

“La Terrasse” is our outdoor café situated in the heart of the old domain. Using ingredients from the kitchen garden, “La Terrasse” offers fresh salads, chilled soups, home-made tarts, farmers cheeses and organic charcuterie, accompanied by the wines of the domain.

With live music throughout the summer, “La Terrasse” is a little bit of Provence to be enjoyed in the company of friends or family.

ART & ARCHITECTURE WALK

Château La Coste is a vineyard where Wine, Art & Architecture live in harmony. Artists and architects were invited to visit the Domain and discover the beauty of Provence. In turn, they were encouraged to choose a place in the landscape that spoke directly to them and were given the freedom to create a work that would live there. Château La Coste will continue to evolve as new projects and installations are developed.

Walk at your leisure through wooded hilltops and valleys, alongside olive groves and vine fields, discovering the many installations of contemporary art on your way.

THE ART CENTRE Tadao Ando conceived the Art Centre for Château La Coste. The building adopts many of the Japanese master’s signature elements to create an extraordinary experience of light and space in nature. A vast infinity pool of water hides an underground car park and provides a spectacular stage for an upper level that is laid out on a V-shaped plan. Flanked by entire elevations of glass, one wing of this ‘V’ houses our welcome desk and bookshop, while the other wing includes a restaurant which overlooks the water and vines. Tadao Ando’s uniquely smooth concrete walls are marked by a series of conical points and are organised into tatami proportions. His sculptural use of this medium creates strong geometric lines, framed points of view and a variety of reflections throughout the day. The interplay between interior and exterior spaces is seen everywhere in the building and this integration into the landscape is perfectly highlighted by the colonnade that disappears beyond the building into the vines. “What I tried to do here, because of the presence of Cézanne in Aix, is create new works close to nature.” Tadao Ando says. “I wanted to capture the same, very humble spirit of a Cézanne painting.”

Château La Coste and the New Arms Race for Destination Vineyards

Wineries today are design meccas commissioned by one-percent connoisseurs and conceived by the world’s most discerning oenophiles: architects. A Pritzker to pair with your rosé? Only in Provence!

At a 500-acre vineyard near Aix-en-Provence, a pregnant woman made out of brick and black-pigmented concrete rose from the ground this spring. She is Mater Earth , a large-scale sculpture by the French artist Prune Nourry that is the latest artwork at the estate of the Irish property developer Patrick “Paddy” McKillen, who was best known until recently for his stewardship of Maybourne Hotels, including Claridge’s in London, and the epic battle that followed for control of that hotel.

“We want La Coste to be a happy place,” says McKillen, whose plans include an affordable farm-style hotel (currently the property has 28 villas) and a new cellar for red wine production—with a tasting room. “We want our guests to leave feeling energized and wishing to come back.”

The architect Stephanie Goto, a friend of McKillen’s who recently completed a restaurant for the Shinmonzen, a new sister hotel property in Kyoto, has been to La Coste three times. “It was so rich,” she recalls of her first visit. “I was at a loss for words, in the sense of just being very, very satiated.” Kristina O’Neal, a partner in the design firm AvroKO who visited for the first time last year, adds, “There’s no place I’ve been where the connection between art, food, design, and wine has been better planned, executed, and soulfully sewn together.”

La Coste may have an edge in the soul department, but it’s not the only winery that brings together art, architecture, and landscape to potent effect. The 540,000-square-foot headquarters of Marchesi Antinori , a family-run winery designed by Marco Casamonti (a founding partner of the Florence-based firm Archea), juts out from a hill in the Chianti region, where, as the New York Times architecture critic Michael Kimmelman pointed out , it has managed to highlight the landscape. Alessia Antinori, the winery’s vice president, sees the design not as a part of a fad but as a natural progression in her family’s six-century, 26-generation operation. Inside, a museum showcases the family’s vast art collection, and contemporary artists including Tomás Saraceno, Sam Falls, and the late Yona Friedman have created site-specific installations since the building opened in 2012. “Our DNA is really the land,” Antinori says.

g33mja marchesi antinori winery in tenuta bargino, created by studio archea associati , san casciano val di pesa, florence, italy, gen

Château La Coste and Marchesi Antinori are at the pinnacle of what has become, since the 1980s, a long list of wineries outdoing and one-upping one another. Around the world, deep-pocketed vineyard owners are undeniably in an art and architecture race. (McKillen’s net worth as of 2020 was reported to be around $450 million. The Antinori business had more than $250 million in turnover in 2021 alone.) At long last we’ve arrived at the age of the megawinery.

Other standouts include Le Dôme , a Bordeaux estate that is now home to a circular, timber-covered building designed by Foster + Partners (2021), and Belgium’s VV winery , which features minimalist farmhouse structures by Vincent Van Duysen (2020). The Donum Estate , a Sonoma winery, was already an art collecting enterprise that featured commissions from such blue chip artists as Doug Aitken, El Anatsui, and Anselm Kiefer; last summer saw the completion of a kaleidoscopic wine-tasting pavilion by artist Olafur Eliasson and architect Sebastian Behmann. Even Brad Pitt, whose 2,200-acre Château Miraval estate has been a source of legal strife in his ongoing divorce from Angelina Jolie, has gotten in on the action. The actor recently overhauled a famed recording studio there with the French producer Damien Quintard.

This phenomenon hasn’t happened in a vacuum. Architecture, art, and wineries have been bedfellows since at least 1880, when Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain and wine connoisseur, acquired a property in Rutherford, California, called Inglenook . (It is now owned by Francis Ford Coppola.) Hamden McIntyre, who was asked by Niebaum to oversee Inglenook’s design, went on to create more than a dozen Napa Valley winery buildings. Then, at the turn of the 20th century, the Spanish winery Codorníu tapped Josep Puig i Cadafalch, a Catalan contemporary of Antoni Gaudí, to design its elegant barrel-vaulted cellars. The iconic structure was declared a national monument in 1976. This lineage also includes Bordeaux’s Château Mouton Rothschild , which in 1945 began commissioning an artist every year to create a label for each vintage, working with the likes of Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol.

As for the current building boom, it was arguably jump-started in 1984, when the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art put out an unusual call for the design of a Napa Valley winery. The client, Jan Shrem, an art collector, had recently moved to California from France and was looking for an “epoch-making design.” Ninety-six entries poured in, five finalists were chosen, and the architect Michael Graves was eventually declared the winner.

The resulting design for Shrem’s Clos Pegase winery, which opened in 1987, comprises a collection of ocher-colored, Tuscan-inspired structures bedecked with Graves’s signature Postmodernist touches. The estate includes 20,000 square feet of “caves,” a small theater, a tasting room, and a private residence atop a knoll. The impact was immediate. It inspired the 1988 Pompidou Center exhibition “Châteaux Bordeaux,” and one of the competition’s jurors, the winemaker Robert Mondavi, noted, “I believe this project will set the tone and pace for winery developments to come.” He was spot-on.

Karen Nichols, a principal at Michael Graves Architecture who worked on Clos Pegase, notes that for any winery building to last, “character and context” are essential. “The combination of the two is what, I argue, makes this terroir,” she says.

Over the three decades since, winery architecture—and the wine industry at large—has been robust, with eminent architects creating bold-faced projects around the world, from Herzog & de Meuron’s basalt-flanked Dominus Winery in Napa Valley (1997), to Norman Foster’s trefoil-shaped Bodegas Portia in Spain’s Ribera del Duero region (2010), to Smiljan Radic’s serene, sunken VIK Winery in San Vicente, Chile (2014). “Pritzker bait” is how these exquisite edifices are described by architecture critic Martin Filler, who notes that the rise of megawineries is similar to, and in certain ways connected to, the rise of boutique hotels, which was ignited in the 1980s by hospitality impresario Ian Schrager. It also coincided with the global explosion of luxury retail, John Pawson’s 1995 Calvin Klein and Peter Marino’s 1996 Armani flagships in New York being key early examples. Disneyfication contributed too: In 1972 Napa Valley’s Sterling Vineyards installed an aerial tram that whisks guests to its hilltop facilities.

Then there was the Robert Parkerization of wine. In the 1990s and 2000s, Parker’s 100-point rating system, which favored fruity, full-bodied, flavor-forward wines, took over. Striking, showy wines, it seemed, called for striking, showy buildings.

Another impact on this evolution was the “Bilbao effect,” so named for the increased investment in world class cultural institutions following the 1997 opening of Frank Gehry’s gleaming, voluptuous Guggenheim Bilbao museum. Over the next few years architects including Santiago Calatrava (2001, in La Rioja), Tom Kundig (2002, in British Columbia), Steven Holl (2003, in Austria), Mario Botta (2003, in Tuscany), and Glenn Murcutt (2003, in Australia) created “destination” facilities.

ysios wine cellar

To Filler, many of the latest winery buildings aren’t all that different from “condos near the High Line, Brickell in Miami, or boutiques for LVMH. They think the imprimatur of an architect equals quality.” Sometimes, as with Gehry’s rosé-ribboned hotel for the Marqués de Riscal winery in Spain, completed in 2006, they appear to be simply plunked down, with no relation to their surroundings. Foster’s Bodegas Portia looks more like a space shuttle launch pad than a winery. Designer-provocateur Philippe Starck and architect Luc Arsène-Henry’s moat-surrounded cellar for Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion in Bordeaux, unveiled in 2016, resembles a megayacht.

“To me it’s the circus tent: Set up your architecture here. It could be anywhere,” says architect Brad Cloepfil of the flashier side of winery design, though he is biased. Known for his artfully crafted constructions, Cloepfil designed an intimate, cedar-lined tasting room nestled into a hilltop at Oregon’s Sokol Blosser winery. Opened in 2013, it’s a humble, refreshingly contextual example within the larger trend.

While few if any winemakers will ever execute something at the exemplary level of Château La Coste—which is more in the vein of an art compound—doubtless many will make grand architectural gestures. Such projects suggest that, as time goes on, more winemakers are beginning to understand the value of subtler, more integrated design notes. As with winemaking, architecture need not be big and brawny; it requires balance and finesse. And piles and piles of cash. Meanwhile, Mater Earth idles in Provence, as if bathing in a literal garden of earthly delights.
