Get ready for an evening of sidesplitting laughter as Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood, the dynamic duo from TV's "Whose Line is it Anyway?," take the stage in a one-night-only uproarious live show, Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood: Asking for Trouble .     Armed with their lightning-fast wits, Mochrie & Sherwood transform the audience’s suggestions into an unpredictable evening of non-stop comedy gold. No script? No problem! “Asking For Trouble” is a wild rollercoaster ride of hilarity, where two improv legends prove they are still the best in the business.

Hilaritycus smoothius Scotland, that craggy, majestic, malt whiskeyed land, has spawned many myths besides the Loch Ness Monster. One such legend is Colin Mochrie (Hilaritycus smoothius). A migratory creature that left his birthplace for the Great White North (Canada), Colin learned his theatrical craft through repeated behavioral rituals at Studio 58 located in the mountain nestled, sparkling jewel of the Northwest, Vancouver, British Columbia. A hard-working, imaginative mammal, Colin used his chameleon-like skills to blend in with others of his ilk, never being noticed, until noted anthropologists Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson discovered him at the Toronto Second City. Moving him to the Whose Line is it Anyway Institute in historical and damp London, England, Patterson and Leveson slowly groomed Colin till he became international sensation. Working with Drew Carey at the U.S.-based institute of the same name, only increased interest in the reclusive beast.

Cranuis giganticum ‍ As a young hatchling, Brad Sherwood (Cranius gigantum), fled the ice plains of Chicago for the arid expanse of the Rocky Mountains, where he settled at the epicenter of art and coyote sculptures, Santa Fe New, Mexico. Weaned on green chiles and isolation, he became a savant of self-amusement. Years later, he hopped a hobo train to the Pacific Ocean where he searched for people willing to employ someone with an abnormally large skull. Eventually, he was plucked from the Venice Beach Freak Show by a band of improvising gypsies who passed him from troupe to troupe, until he was sold into servitude to some British Choreographer/Pirates. They, in turn, sold him to a British improv TV show, where he was hired to teach Canadians how to be funny. Now, he is ward and caretaker of his least successful pupil, Colin Mochrie. Brad is given a stipend from the Canadian government to keep Colin from hurting himself or livestock. As part of Colin's therapy, Brad tours with him in an improvised stage performance that helps creatively channel Mochrie's delusions.

Colin Mochrie has been a staple of American television comedy for 25 years now as an original cast member on the improvisational series “ Whose Line Is It Anyway? ” Mochrie, Ryan Stiles and Wayne Brady have headlined the show since its 1998 launch on ABC, and they all returned for The CW’s reboot in 2013 after a six-year hiatus. Fans received mix messages last fall when Mochrie tweeted the show would be ending after its upcoming 20th season. The CW called the news “not accurate.” So what is the truth?

Popular on Variety

“Everyone at the show — producers and actors — are calling this the last taping,” Mochrie said. “The short answer is that if it comes back, it probably won’t be with this cast. There is a complicated relationship with the show. The cast loves each other, and the actual shooting is always fun. We are all grateful that the show gave us a showcase and allowed us to be able to tour. The downside is that we never received fair compensation for the success of the show.”

“We provide the content but don’t get paid as ‘writers.’ We never received residuals for a show that’s been shown around the world since its inception,” Mochrie continued. “Seeing announcements about the sale to the show overseas or to  HBO Max  can get irritating… I hope I don’t sound bitter, because I learned long ago that this business is not fair, and being bitter about it gets you nowhere.”

Mochrie also called out the strange lack of promotion the show receives, saying, “I also find it odd that any publicizing of the show comes through our social media. Every day a tweet shows up: ‘You guys should bring that show back!’ Every season for the last nine years we’ve had to remind folks that we are on. So the short answer is, as of now, this is the last season with this cast. The longer, more vague answer is that it’s like the Mafia: It keeps pulling us back, so who knows?”

When The CW relaunched “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” for its ninth season in 2013, original host Drew Carey was replaced by Aisha Tyler. The show has aired 168 episodes so far in its run on The CW.

Colin Mochrie Reflects on Over 30 Years of Whose Line Is It Anyway?

colin mochrie ryan stiles tour

Colin Mochrie was doing improv before it was cool — or maybe, more accurately, before a lot of people even knew what it was. A Toronto Second City alumnus, comedian, and actor, he corralled people off the street into improv theaters and worked on a number of smaller productions before appearing in over 50 episodes of the U.K.’s Whose Line Is It Anyway? from 1991 to 1999. In 1998, he brought improv to an even wider audience as a star in ABC’s American spinoff . On the show, Mochrie, Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady, and a rotating guest performer participated in a variety of improvised scenes for five years alongside host Drew Carey. (From 2005 to 2007, no new episodes were filmed, but previously unaired content was played on ABC Family.)

The show was picked back up by the CW in 2013 with Aisha Tyler at the helm, and Mochrie returned to reprise his role as Captain Hair alongside Brady and Styles. In November, he announced on Twitter that the show will close with its 20th season, which premieres in March. While the CW would not confirm the show’s cancellation, Mochrie said that “everyone at the show — producers and actors — are calling this the last taping. The short answer is that if it comes back, it probably won’t be with this cast.”

With roughly 400 episodes under his belt, Mochrie reflected, during his last days of filming, on Whose Line ’s impact on improv, how the show and comedy changed over time, and his own life: “I’m doing much better than people with hair.”

You’ve mentioned before that improv “wasn’t a part of mainstream entertainment” when you first became interested in it. When I first started improv, nobody knew what it was. At the theater we were at, when we first started, we were running into the McDonald’s next door, begging people, “Come see our show.” They said, “What’s it about?” And we said, “No, we don’t know. You have to yell at us and then we’ll make up something.”

There are still times I think, How did they pitch the show to a network and have it get picked up? There’s four guys you have never seen before, and we don’t have a show until the end of the taping, and it’s 22 episodes of that. I’m proud that it got improv into the public mind-set. I know there were a lot of people who looked down on Whose Line , which I understand. We never said this is the end-all be-all of improv. I always like to think it’s a gateway to all the different forms there are. But it’s gotten the word out there. And it was a show that families could watch together.

What have you noticed about improv’s growth in the past 30 years? Just the fact that it’s in the public consciousness — and that, I think, is all due to Whose Line , once it became popular. Kids really seemed to be drawn to it, so there were improv clubs starting in college and high school. And then like any other kind of art form, people just kind of played around with it to see what sort of formats could be done — everything from an improvised one-act play to improvised Dungeons & Dragons . I think the surface is still kind of just being scratched.

I’ve been very fortunate for the success of Whose Line that I’ve been able to tour all around the world and work with improvisers from all around the world. I always say the guys on Whose Line are pretty good, but there are fantastic improvisers all around the world who just haven’t had a series showcase them, and they’re constantly finding ways to play with the format and do different things.

How do they “play with the format”? There’s one guy in Ireland, Neil Curran, whose show is to get someone up from the audience, and they become his improv partner for the whole time. I’ve been doing a show with a hypnotist where he hypnotizes people and then I improvise with them. It’s fascinating, because people always say, “Well, how can you improvise? It’s so hard, it’s so difficult,” and it really isn’t. It’s just that we do things onstage that we don’t do in real life, which is listening, accepting people’s ideas, and working with them. And when you’re working with hypnotized people, the part of the brain that deals with self-criticism — that part of the brain that says, “You can’t do this or you’re going to look silly, make a fool of yourself” — that’s gone. So people become true improvisers. They just react to everything that either I or the hypnotist says. It’s been fascinating seeing how, once people get out of their own way, what they can do.

I do think everyone can improvise, but as a lapsed theater kid, there’s definitely a talent involved. Like any muscle, it has to be worked and exercised. Because, I mean, basically, we’re all improvisers. That’s what our lives are. We have sort of a rough framework; we know how it’s going to end. Everything in between now and then is just totally improvised.

Why did you decide to return for the Whose Line reboot in 2013? A big part of it was the people, because I don’t live in the same city as them, so it was a chance to kind of play around with them. Also, it’s for mercenary reasons. Also, it would give publicity to the tour I was doing with Brad Sherwood, and it doesn’t take up a lot of time. We’re doing four tapings and that’s it — from that, they could get 20 shows. I think that’s part of the reason we’ve gone on so long: We work so well together because we don’t spend enough time with each other to get on each other’s nerves.

How does it feel to wrap up filming? It’s kind of bittersweet. It’s been a really good run. My very first Whose Line show, my daughter was two months old, and she just turned 32, so it’s been a big part of my life. Through the show, I met all these great people who have become my best friends, and I managed to make a career out of something that wasn’t a career before that show came along. When all the other successful sitcoms ended, there was a two-hour retrospective of their best moments and interviews with everyone in the cast. We don’t get that.

But at least you won’t have to do any more Hoedowns. I don’t want to jinx it, but we haven’t done a Hoedown yet this season.

Why does the cast hate them so much? Well, they’re horrible! First of all, is it even a song style? It’s like, “Oh, let’s hear the hoedown stylings of …” Who? No one. And there’s no good place to be in line. The first person: You get this suggestion right away, you have no time to think. And then the rest of the time, you’re just hoping no one will take your verse. There’s some topics we think, All I’ve got is one thing. If somebody does that verse … And when they do it right before you? I can’t even describe the feeling. It’s just loss and despair. And the fact that the Hoedown was invented? It’s horrible.

Last year you tweeted that the upcoming Whose Line season would be the final season, but the CW said that’s “not accurate” and that “no decision has been made at this time about next season.” So what did you mean by your tweet? Everyone at the show — producers and actors — are calling this the last taping. The short answer is that if it comes back, it probably won’t be with this cast. There is a complicated relationship with the show. The cast loves each other, and the actual shooting is always fun. We are all grateful that the show gave us a showcase and allowed us to be able to tour. The downside is that we never received fair compensation for the success of the show. We provide the content but don’t get paid as “writers.” We never received residuals for a show that’s been shown around the world since its inception. Seeing announcements about the sale to the show overseas or to HBO Max can get irritating.

I hope I don’t sound bitter, because I learned long ago that this business is not fair, and being bitter about it gets you nowhere. I also find it odd that any publicizing of the show comes through our social media. Every day a tweet shows up: “You guys should bring that show back!” Every season for the last nine years we’ve had to remind folks that we are on. So the short answer is, as of now, this is the last season with this cast. The longer, more vague answer is that it’s like the Mafia: It keeps pulling us back, so who knows?

What more positive memories from the show will stick with you? The beauty and the curse of improv is you forget everything once it’s gone. The sketch with Richard Simmons I think I’ll always remember; people always keep sending it to me, too, so I’ll never forget it. Having Robin Williams do the show was amazing. Sid Caesar — being able to do a scene with someone who I admired as a child. Then there were a couple of scenes I think of where I made Ryan laugh, and that always makes me proud. Everyone’s so jaded. They’ve seen everything. Whenever I could make them break up and lose it — sad, I know — it felt like I’d accomplished something.

Was the tenor of the reboot at all different, comparing the ’90s with Drew Carey to now with Aisha Tyler? Yeah, and even through the time with Aisha we’ve changed; they’ve gotten a little more lax with censorship. When Brad and I are touring, we say right off the top of the show, “We’re not going to say anything political,” because we found — and this started in the Bush years — if you did something even vaguely political, immediately half your audience was disengaged from you. Our strength is not political satire, it’s just goofy fun. So we made that decision: Let’s not even make a passing remark. Let’s just focus on having fun and making it a night where people can forget about that stuff.

At the same time, you are very , very clear about your stances on social media . Are those parts of your life that you want to keep separate? There are times they sneak out on the show. During the Drew years, we were doing Clinton blowjob jokes, and then it just sort of turned, for some reason, where if you made a joke about the presidents, you were a traitor. Making fun of presidents has been a time-honored tradition — I mean, since there was comedy and presidents, we’ve been making fun of the president. So it was a bit of, Okay, the world seems to be in sort of a knee-jerk mode right now .

And it’s hard on Twitter. I try not to engage for various reasons. When my daughter came out as trans , that was a whole other thing. There’s some people who, when I read their comments, I think, Okay, you know what? I think I can reach them. I think it’s just speaking out of ignorance. Perhaps I can turn them around . My success rate is probably one percent.

For your tour with Brad, how do you keep your energy up for each show? Improv takes so much, and touring can be draining. I’m at an age where things hurt more than they used to. But there’s also a thing called Doctor Theater, where you’re onstage, and all of a sudden you’re a 20-year-old again. So for those two hours, it doesn’t even feel like I’m expending any kind of energy. I’m just having a lot of fun. Before and after the show: different things.

Anything else in the works? I’ve been attached to like 15 different projects that’ll probably never see the light of day. And if you followed my career, you can see there’s no game plan. There’s no sense to it or logic. It’s just something will come up, and I go, “Oh, I’ll do that.” This show with the hypnotist, he contacted me and I thought, Oh, that sounds interesting . And it’s also a little scary. It’s outside my comfort zone.

I always look for things that make me uncomfortable, and I find that’s when I do my best work. That’s when I step up to the plate and at least hit a single — not always a homer. I’m open to anything. I often get offers where they always start with “We have no money.” And those are the things I find the most interesting.

Whose Line Is It Anyway? to end after 12 seasons on the CW, star Colin Mochrie says

"In January, we shoot our final season. Thank you all for the support over the years."

Emlyn Travis is a news writer at  Entertainment Weekly  with over five years of experience covering the latest in entertainment. A proud Kingston University alum, Emlyn has written about music, fandom, film, television, and awards for multiple outlets including MTV News,  Teen Vogue , Bustle, BuzzFeed,  Paper Magazine , Dazed, and NME. She joined EW in August 2022.

The cast of Whose Line Is It Anyway? will soon deliver their final one-liners.

The beloved improvisational comedy show — where everything is made up and the points don't matter — will end on the CW after filming its upcoming 12th season, master improviser Colin Mochrie said Friday.

"Hey everyone. Hope you are enjoying the current season of Whose Line ," he tweeted. "In January, we shoot our final season. Thank you all for the support over the years."

Representatives for the CW declined to comment on the show's cancelation, and Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

The long-running comedy series, which was an adaptation of the 1988 British show of the same name, first aired on ABC from 1998 to 2004 before pivoting to ABC Family from 2005 to 2007.

Hosted by Drew Carey , it featured Mochrie, Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady , and another guest comedian putting their quick-thinking skills to the test as they finagled their way through a bunch of delightfully absurd comedy and musical sketches for points. Carey crowned a winner, seemingly at random, at the conclusion of each episode.

Back in 2013, six years after Whose Line had ended, Mochrie was the first to share the news that the legendary series would officially return to television once again . "Oh, by the way, Whose Line is coming back," he tweeted at the time. "More details later."

On the same day, the CW confirmed that a revival of the show, this time hosted by Aisha Taylor, had been picked up. Brady, Mochrie, and Stiles all returned for it, and were joined by recurring guest stars Jeff B. Davis, Gary Anthony Williams, Greg Proops, Brad Sherwood, Charles Esten, and Keegan-Michael Key .

Colin Mochrie credits success of ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’ to lack of script

The success of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” was like improv action, unexpected. “I never thought ‘Whose Line’ would become this enduring show,” the “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” lifer Colin Mochrie said while calling from his Toronto home. “I didn’t think the odds were with us.”

“Whose Line” is adapted from a 1988 British TV show of the same title and has been canceled on a number of occasions, but like a zombie of a TV show, it always re-emerged. First airing on ABC from 1998-2004, then ABC Family from 2005-2007, the show was picked up by the CW Network in 2013.

“I think part of the reason people love it so much is that there is no script,” Mochrie said. “So obviously anything can happen. We ask the audience questions, like ‘What scares you?’ and we take it from there. The audience starts us off and so because of that, they don’t root against us. They’re part of the show.”

Every night, Mochrie and his “Whose Line” mates, longtime cast members Wayne Brady and Ryan Stiles, walk the equivalent of a high wire without a net. The extemporaneous performers routinely score bigger laughs than those who work with prepared material because it’s happening in front of an audience.

“I think you’re right about that,” Mochrie said. “When something happens in the ether, it generally hits the audience harder than prepared material. But we’re the opposite of stand-up. It’s fun working without a script. Audiences appreciate our effort. That’s so live and on television.

“We have a high success rate,” he said. “But what’s great about what we do is that things can go really awry. What’s wonderful about improv is that you move on immediately after something flops, and you forget about it. You just try something else. Something will work. It usually does. That’s why we can still do this.”

Improv changed Mochrie’s life. He embraced improv and focused less on acting. “Whose Line” host Drew Carey was a stand-up but enjoyed improv so much that he left joke-telling behind.

“It’s too much heavy lifting,” Carey said when asked why he no longer does stand-up.

Carey became the host of “The Price is Right,” and fellow “Whose Line” alum Brady is the host of “Let’s Make a Deal.”

“Everything has worked out well for everyone that’s been part of this show,” Mochrie said. “I have no regrets about it. It’s just amazing that after all of these years, ‘Whose Line’ is still part of entertainment and pop culture. We found our little niche. If you told me that would be so when we started I would have laughed. There’s just no way that was going to be possible, but you never know what can happen when you put something in play.”

Did The Whose Line Is It Anyway Cast Actually Get Along Between Commercial Breaks?

  • The stars of Whose Line Is It Anyway? have developed a strong friendship off-screen, with Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie remaining friends since their early days at The Second City.
  • Colin Mochrie has described his Whose Line co-stars as his best friends and has shared how much working with Ryan Stiles means to him, highlighting their easy camaraderie.
  • Wayne Brady has also spoken about the close bonds he has developed with his co-stars, particularly praising Colin Mochrie for always making him laugh and considering him a close friend and idol from his early days.

When viewers tune into their favorite shows, they'd like to think all the actors get along and fortunately, some co-stars are good friends including Modern Family's stars . On the other hand, there are some infamous examples of co-stars not getting along including the Sex and the City cast . On top of that, Jason Alexander memorably had trouble working with one of his Seinfeld co-stars .

While Whose Line Is It Anyway? isn't a typical show, it features several performers who work together regularly. With that in mind, it begs an obvious question, are the stars of Whose Line Is It Anyway friends when they aren't being recorded?

Who Are The Stars Of Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Many people who enjoy Whose Line Is It Anyway? have no idea about the show's lengthy history. First introduced in The U.K., the original version of the show premiered back in 1988 and remained on the air until 1999. In America, Whose Line Is It Anyway? has been produced off and on since 1998 and is set to return for a 21st season in the future.

When it comes to the American version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, it has been hosted by two people over the years. For the first several years, it was Drew Carey that presented the show until he left for his day job and Aisha Tyler took over.

While the show's host has an impact on how good Whose Line Is It Anyway? is, the main performers obviously matter more. Over the many years and different versions of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, many performers have come and gone including some celebrity guests. That said, four performers have become mainstays.

In 1989, Ryan Stiles made his debut on Whose Line Is It Anyway? as part of The U.K.'s version of the show. After appearing in 76 episodes of The U.K. show, Stiles went on to star in the American adaptation from the beginning.

Related: How Much Were Colin Mochrie And The Cast Of Whose Line Is It Anyway Actually Paid Throughout Its 20 Seasons?

While Greg Proops hasn't appeared in as many Whose Line Is It Anyway? episodes as the show's other main performers, he has become a regular as well. Just like Stiles, Proops made his U.K. debut in 1989 and appeared in 50 episodes of that version of the show. Proops has then gone on to appear in 78 episodes of the American adaptation to date.

A couple of years after Stiles and Proops, Colin Mochrie debuted on The U.K.'s version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? in 1991. After becoming a regular part of that version of the show, Mochrie brought his talents to America's adaptation.

After appearing in only three episodes of The U.K.'s Whose Line It Is Anyway?, Wayne Brady still managed to show how incredibly talented he is. As a result, Brady was able to become a huge part of the American adaptation over time, and now it would feel wrong for there to be an episode without him. Brady has also notably become an executive producer on the show since the ninth season.

Are The Stars Of Whose Line Is It Anyway Friends?

When fans tune into episodes of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, it doesn't take long for it to become clear how much comedy chemistry the show's stars share. Absolutely hilarious together, the show's stars are extremely comfortable making people laugh as a group.

Of course, just because the stars of Whose Line Is It Anyway? have learned to depend on each other comedically doesn't mean they necessarily like each other. Thankfully for anyone who hopes that the show's stars are pals in real life, however, it certainly seems like they all get along well.

Before Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie starred in Whose Line Is It Anyway? the two performers began working together as a part of The Second City. On top of collaborating ever since, Stiles and Mochrie have remained friends.

In March 2021, Mochrie was interviewed for a video that was uploaded to Cassius Morris' YouTube channel. During the resulting conversation, Mochrie talked about how he and Stiles have the kind of friendship where they can go without talking for a while and then instantly pick up where they left off.

"What I love about him is we can go years without talking and then immediately it's like I just saw you yesterday. It has that, it's a really easy feeling."

During a separate interview with Vulture from 2022, Mochrie spoke about the friendships he has made because of Whose Line Is It Anyway? . Early on during his conversation with Vulture, Mochrie stated that he has become very close with his long-time co-stars.

"Through the show, I met all these great people who have become my best friends" Also during the same interview, Mochrie was asked what Whose Line Is It Anyway? moments will stick with him once he walks away. After listing getting to work with legends like Sid Caesar and Robin Williams, Mochrie said something that reveals how much Stiles means to him. "

"Then there were a couple of scenes I think of where I made Ryan laugh, and that always makes me proud."

Over the years, Wayne Brady has also spoken about becoming friends with his co-stars. For example, back when he was still hosting The Wayne Brady Show, he had Mochrie on as a guest and both of them spoke about their friendship .

First off, Brady outright said "I'm your friend" to Mochrie. As the interview proceeded, Mochrie described working on Whose Line Is It Anyway? as "playing with your friends". Mochrie later said, "The beauty of Whose Line is that you are out there with such great people".

In 2021, Brady was a guest on The Rich Eisen Show. During the conversation, Brady heaped praise on Stiles, Mochrie, and Proops and called all three men geniuses. By the tenor of the entire conversation, it came across that Brady greatly valued getting to work with those three men, Drew Carey, and Aisha Tyler.

Most specifically, Brady went out of his way to talk about what a joy it is for him to work with Mochrie . Initially, Brady made it clear that Mochrie makes him laugh anytime they are together including in between the scenes they film together.

"Colin Mochrie always makes me laugh, even when, even between the scenes. We have a great chemistry together." More importantly, Brady then went on to talk about admiring Mochrie before they met and the close bond they've built after working together for years.

"He always makes me happy. And I think part of that is because he was my, he was one of my idols when I was coming up and watching Whose Line on Comedy Central. Just thinking, 'Wow, how cool would it would be to one day get to work with this guy.' And then years later, I get to work with him and I call him a close friend."

If ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ Returns, It Won’t Be with Original Cast: ‘We Never Received Fair Compensation’

The cast of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” is asking a more important question: Where are the paychecks?

Original star Colin Mochrie, who appeared in over 50 episodes of the U.K.’s debut sketch improv series before founding the U.S. version along with Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady, and host Drew Carey, revealed that the actors “never received residuals” from the long-running series.

Mochrie’s U.K. appearances ran from 1991 to 1999; the American spin-off began in 1998 and lasted five years. From 2005 to 2007, previously unaired content was played on ABC Family despite no new episodes being filmed. “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” was picked up by The CW in 2013 with Aisha Tyler hosting. Mochrie tweeted that the show will end with its 20th season this year, despite The CW calling the announcement “not accurate.”

“Everyone at the show — producers and actors — are calling this the last taping,” Mochrie clarified to Vulture .

Mochrie continued, “We provide the content but don’t get paid as ‘writers.’ We never received residuals for a show that’s been shown around the world since its inception. Seeing announcements about the sale to the show overseas or to HBO Max can get irritating.”

The comedian added, “I hope I don’t sound bitter, because I learned long ago that this business is not fair, and being bitter about it gets you nowhere. I also find it odd that any publicizing of the show comes through our social media.

Mochrie quipped, “I often get offers where they always start with ‘We have no money.’ And those are the things I find the most interesting.”

Mochrie also tweeted in November 2022 that “Whose Line” could continue on since there is “always an option for a new cast” while the original stars tour in “various incarnations .”

‘Whose Line is it Anyway?’ stars are ‘Scared Scriptless’ at Strathmore

For decades, they’ve made audiences laugh on the improv comedy TV series “Whose Line is it Anyway?”

This Saturday, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood are “Scared Scriptless” at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland — what Mochrie called a “totally improvised” performance.

“Everything starts with a suggestion from the audience,” Mochrie told WTOP. “We have many games where the audience is on stage with us, providing sound effects in a ‘Whose Line’ favorite, the ‘Sound Effects’ game.”

Mochrie added, “It’s basically Brad and I doing a version of ‘Whose Line’ without the dead weight, as we like to call [Ryan] Stiles and [Wayne] Brady. I don’t think they understand what dead weight means — they’re not the brightest.”

In all seriousness, he actually adores his TV co-stars and loves giving them a hard time.

“Wayne is basically just raw talent, he can do everything, he can sing, dance, impressions, he’s funny,” Mochrie said. “I grew up with Ryan, so I’ve known Ryan for almost 50 years now and he’s never at a loss, he always knows how to make the funniest line, he’s incredibly generous as an improviser.

Mochrie said Stiles “gets as much enjoyment out of setting you up for a joke and seeing you crush it as he does getting the punchline himself.”

As for his touring co-star Sherwood, what would the label read if he bottled up his energy?

“It would just say ‘Major Irritant,’ because that’s kind of what he is,” Mochrie said. “We have sort of a sibling relationship where he’s like the younger brother who’s constantly finding ways to irritate me and bug me.”

Mochrie on his co-star’s talent: “He’s an incredible wordsmith, he loves words and plays-on-words, so he’s a great verbal comedian and that’s really his strength.

What would Sherwood label Mochrie’s bottle? Mochrie thinks, “‘Meal Ticket,’ because, let’s face it, I’m giving him a career.”

Born in Scotland in 1957, Mochrie’s family moved to Montreal and Vancouver, so he mostly grew up in Canada. In 1987, he cut his comedy teeth in Toronto’s Second City comedy troupe, originally from Chicago.

“Ryan had just left to go to L.A., we were at Second City together, and the ‘Whose Line’ producers, Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson, were doing a cross-North America audition tour,” Mochrie said. “They saw our show and loved it, then auditioned us at 8 a.m., which is a horrible time for comedians to audition for anything. We auditioned as a cast and did that thing that casts do, everybody was very supportive of each other, so nobody really stood out.”

He auditioned again the following year, this time with a bunch of people he didn’t know, and stood out enough to land a spot on the original British version of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” (1988-1999) hosted by Clive Anderson, who Mochrie said is “incredibly smart” and “the epitome of what you’d think a British person would be: uptight but still very funny.”

Mochrie said, “A few years ago, it was the 30th anniversary of the British ‘Whose Line’ and we did four live shows at Royal Albert Hall, so Clive was hosting … and it was like no time had changed. Everybody was still fun. Clive is the master of a sarcastic dig and does it so well and still hasn’t lost a beat.”

It was adapted into an American series with ABCs “Whose Line is it Anyway?” (1998-2007) as host Drew Carey reminded us that “everything is made up and the points don’t matter,” then cracked up with his buzzer at the desk.

“Drew was one of the biggest fans of the show,” Mochrie said. “I cannot say enough lovely things about him. Every year, he would take the cast and crew of not only ‘Whose Line’ but ‘The Drew Carey Show’ on a trip somewhere. He was very appreciative. … He realized how integral we were to his success and, of course, he was a big part of the success of ‘Whose Line.’ He was the audience’s representative. People loved watching him cry with laughter.”

Two of the most sidesplitting episodes came from guest performers Robin Williams and Richard Simmons.

“Robin was a dream for all of us,” Mochrie said. “When he joined us, he was an Oscar winner who was doing our little show and he was so in the spirit of improv, just one of the guys.”

Mochrie on Simmons: “God bless him, just so committed to it and was there to have fun. I think that scene was one of the funniest scenes ever on television … Whenever people come up and talk about how much they enjoy ‘Whose Line,’ it’s always that scene.”

Of all of the televised improvisation games — “Scenes from a Hat,” “Props,” “Party Quirks,” “Greatest Hist,” “Infomercials,” “Irish Drinking Song,” “Hoedown” — what was his personal favorite game to play?

“Let me just say: it will never be ‘Hoedown.’ ‘Hoedown’ was the most reviled [game] in the history of that show, nobody loved it,” Mochrie said. “For me, I think ‘Greatest Hits’ was consistently my favorite.”

He went on, “First of all, I got to sit down, which was always nice, then it was Ryan and I goofing around for a while then handing it off to these amazing singer improvisers, so it was perfect in that I got to be a participant, then I also got to be a viewer.”

Most recently, the show was revived with host Aisha Tyler on The CW network, starting in 2013.

“When I heard Aisha was hosting, I thought, ‘Oh great,’ because I knew her of course from all she’s done, but I thought, ‘How are we gonna make fun of this beautiful, strong, Black woman with a great sense of humor?’ — but luckily we found a way,” Mochrie said.

Mochrie on Tyler: “She just loves to get in there and mix it up, she’s great at the insults, which spurs us on, so she’s a great addition. I love that each host has stamped it with their own original style.”

Today, the show’s future remains uncertain due to the Writers’ and Actors’ Strikes. Last fall, there were rumors that the 20th season would be its last, but it was just renewed for its 21st season in May before the strikes.

“This is a show that’s given us all a career, so it’s hard to be bitter,” Mochrie said. “I don’t think anyone feels they’ve been compensated fairly because we come up with the content. There’s nothing in contracts that deal with improv. We are the ‘writers’ of the show. … We saw the show was being sold to stations in Britain, it was sold to HBO Max, then a new streaming service … and we don’t get a piece of that, so we feel there should be some compensation.”

Mochrie in November tweeted they were set to begin shooting what he believes is the 12th and final season in January. Currently in its 11th season, the improvisational comedy show is an adaptation of the British show of the same name. It originally aired on ABC and ABC Family from 1998 to 2007 before a revival was picked up by the CW and began airing in 2013.

Deadline has confirmed that no final decision has been made on the show that stars Mochrie, Wayne Brady, Ryan Stiles and Aisha Tyler and is executive produced by Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson. It’s from Hat Trick Prods. and Warner Bros. TV.

“Everyone at the show — producers and actors — are calling this the last taping,” Mochrie told Vulture. “The short answer is that if it comes back, it probably won’t be with this cast.”

How Much Were Colin Mochrie And The Cast Of Whose Line Is It Anyway Actually Paid Throughout Its 20 Seasons?

The beloved stars of Whose Line Is It Anyway were not paid as well as they thought they should be through the show's lengthy run.

Throughout the history of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, some truly amazing celebrity guest stars appeared in episodes . Still, there is no doubt that fans tuned in to watch Colin Mochrie, Ryan Stiles, and Wayne Brady.

Given that Whose Line Is It Anyway?'s producers have relied on Mochrie, Stiles, and Brady so much, you'd probably think they would bend over backward to make them happy. Fortunately, it seems pretty clear the three men were happy with many aspects of their time on the show. After all, it is well-documented that the stars got along well with each other .

As nice as it is that Whose Line Is It Anyways?'s stars got along so well and they seemed to have a lot of fun together, at the end of the day they are professionals. For that reason, one of the biggest questions has to be how much were the stars of Whose Line Is It Anyway? paid to star in the show?

How Much Did The Cast Of Whose Line Is It Anyway Make?

When the American version of Whose Line It Is Anyway?'s first episode aired in 1998, many viewers instantly became big fans of the show's format and stars. As a result, it took many fans by surprise when ABC canceled the show in 2007.

Whose Line Is It Anyway?'s stars onstage

Fortunately for everyone who couldn't get enough of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, the show made its return to television when new episodes started to air on The CW in 2013. In the years that followed, the show continued to air until fans came to believe that 2023 likely would mark the end of the revival.

Between ABC and The CW's versions of the beloved sketch comedy show, twenty different seasons of Whose Line Is It Anyway aired on American television between 1998 and 2023. Given how rare it is for any entertainment franchise to last that long, it is an amazing achievement for everyone involved that the show was such a success.

Related: What Happened To The Cast Of ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’

Throughout Whose Line Is It Anyway?'s run on American television, many different people played a role in the show's success. After all, the show couldn't have succeeded without supportive fans in the audience, its producers, and hosts Drew Carey and Aisha Tyler.

Still, anyone who has seen an episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway? will likely agree that Colin Mochrie, Wayne Brady, and Ryan Stiles carried the show on their shoulders. With that in mind and the fact that networks have valued the show enough to air twenty seasons, it seems like those three men should have gotten rich.

Of course, no matter if it seems like Brady, Stiles, and Mochrie should be wealthy, the truth is that networks play stars as little as they can get away with.

Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles side by side

While there is no doubt that Whose Line Is It Anyway? has been a very successful show, it never became one of the top-rated shows on television. As a result, there haven't been too many reports about what goes on behind the scenes of the popular show.

Given the lack of coverage about how the show was made, there is no way for fans to know for sure how much the stars of Whose Line Is It Anyway? get paid. That said, based on the available information, it seems very clear that the people who headline the sketch comedy show were paid a lot less than many fans may think.

Related: Are Ryan Stiles And Drew Carey Still Friends Today?

According to Wikipedia, almost 400 episodes of Whose Line Is It Anyway? have aired to date. On top of that, the twentieth season of the show is airing as of this writing which will take the show past that threshold.

At this point, it is clear that the show's 20th season was filmed some time ago and that Colin Mochrie has appeared in almost every episode. With that in mind, it is known that Mochrie has filmed more than 400 episodes of a show that aired on American network television.

Wayne Brady with a big smile

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Mochrie has a $1 million fortune as of the time of this writing. Since 1 million divided by 400 is just 2,500 that points to Mochrie being paid very little for his Whose Line Is It Anyway? tenure.

Since Celebrity Net Worth is considered to be a more credible website, it makes sense to take their reporting seriously. Still, the website could be way off and maybe Mochrie's fortune is closer to $8 million as the website reports Ryan Stiles is worth .

Even if Mochrie was worth $8 million, and he got every penny from Whose Line Is It Anyway?, that would mean he was only paid $20,000 for each episode of the show. Considering how successful the sketch comedy show has been, even being paid $20,000 per episode seems like very little.

What Does Colin Mochrie Think About His Whose Line Is It Anyway Salary?

When it comes to Colin Mochrie, Wayne Brady, and Ryan Stiles, Whose Line Is It Anyway?'s format seems perfect for their skills. Still, that doesn't mean that they can't use their abilities to be successful in other ways. After all, Brady won a season of The Masked Singer and has been busy since then .

Related: Does Drew Carey's $165 Million Net Worth Make Him The Richest Game Show Host?

Given that Mochrie is talented enough to find success with other projects, it seems like there is a very good chance he will continue to make money from other projects.

That said, it makes sense that when Mochrie was interviewed by Vulture in 2023, he complained about his Whose Line Is It Anyway? salary and not getting paid residuals.

Aisha Tyler, Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady, and Colin Mochrie photoshoot

“We provide the content but don’t get paid as ‘writers.’ We never received residuals for a show that’s been shown around the world since its inception. Seeing announcements about the sale to the show overseas or to HBO Max can get irritating… I hope I don’t sound bitter, because I learned long ago that this business is not fair, and being bitter about it gets you nowhere.”

Colin Mochrie smirking

On top of what Mochrie said about not getting paid enough for the work he did on Whose Line Is It Anyway, he had other complaints about how the network handled the show. Most notably, Mochrie made it clear he was baffled the show wasn't promoted better.

"I also find it odd that any publicizing of the show comes through our social media. Every day a tweet shows up: ‘You guys should bring that show back!’ Every season for the last nine years we’ve had to remind folks that we are on."

Given what Mochrie said about the show while talking to Vulture, it makes sense he told the magazine that he believes he likely is done.

"So the short answer is, as of now, this is the last season with this cast. The longer, more vague answer is that it’s like the Mafia: It keeps pulling us back, so who knows?”

Colin Mochrie is an award-winning Canadian comedian, best known for his role in the hit improvisational comedy TV series  Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Who is Colin Mochrie?

Colin Mochrie is a Scottish-born Canadian actor, writer, and improvisational comedian who originally wanted to become a marine biologist. His career took a u-turn when he accepted the challenge from his high school friend to audition for the play  The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch , in which he portrayed the undertaker. He later took professional theatre training at Studio 58 theatre school in Vancouver before starting to perform at Vancouver Theatresports League in 1986.

In 1986, he moved to Toronto and joined an improvisational comedy enterprise, The Second City. He also spent his time touring with the National Touring Company. But his real breakthrough came when he became a part of the British improvisational comedy show  Whose Line Is It Anyway?  (1988). The show was a big hit in Britain, and soon the American version started in 1998. Mochrie also got his part to play in the latter show.

How Old Is Colin Mochrie?

Colin Andrew Mochrie was born in an Irish Catholic family on 30 November 1957, in Kilmarnock, Scotland, UK. His father was an airline maintenance executive. His family emigrated to a small city Quebec, in Montreal, Canada, when he was seven years old. Five years later, they again relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1969. He has said that he was a shy kid whose neighbor would tell that he "watched way too much television."

Mochrie did his schooling in Killarney Secondary School in Vancouver and took Science to become a marine biologist.

Getting Into The Industry

During his high school, upon his friend's dare, Mochrie tried out for a play titled  The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch . He landed an undertaker's role and received his first laughs on stage, which encouraged him to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. He grew up watching television and loved old movies. It was also one of the inspirations to get into the entertainment industry.

"I was not the class clown," Mochrie said. "When I was growing up I never thought of becoming a comedian. I was very serious, a bookworm. I loved reading. And I loved old movies. Maybe that's where my interest in entertainment comes from," he added.

In 1971, he graduated from high school as valedictorian and pursued a four-year course at a professional theatre training school Langara College's Studio 58, in Vancouver.

Shortly after graduating from Studio 58, he joined an improv theatre Vancouver TheatreSports League; the stint would be his full-time job for a long time as he previously only had parts in plays. Mochrie has said that he "literally had to pull people out of McDonald's to come to see the shows" in the beginning.

During this time, he met Ryan Stiles through a mutual friend Jim McLarty. Stiles later became his long-time best friend and a fellow improviser. Stiles was then involved with Punchline Comedy Club, where he would do comedy. Stiles and Mochrie began working at TheatreSports together.

"Actually, through a mutual friend. My best friend, who I was just visiting in New Zealand, was part of the TheatreSports group and he had been hired by Punchlines to start an improv group there. And Ryan was doing stand-up at Punchlines and got involved and through my friend Jim we met and started working at TheatreSports together.," Mochrie shared.

Later, upon Stiles' recommendation, Mochrie moved to Toronto in 1986 and auditioned at The Second City comedy troupe, where Stiles was working. He also co-wrote and performed in three Second City productions. When he was performing with The Second City National touring company, Mochrie met comedy actress and the company's director Canadian Debra McGrath, who would later become his life partner. She hired him for Second City's National Touring Company, wherein he ended up directing for three seasons and starring and co-writing in three productions.

'Whose Line Is It Anyway?'

After completing his stint with The Second City, Mochrie relocated to Los Angeles. In 1989, he auditioned for the British comedy improv show  Whose Line is it Anyway?  He could not earn a role two times but got a regular spot on the show in the third effort. It aired on British Channel 4, and Mochrie remained a cast member for nine years until the show concluded in 1998.

After the British version of the show, Mochrie was hired for the American version of  Whose Line Is It Anyway?  that broadcasted on ABC. The four members of the previous show (Drew Carey, Wayde Brady, Colin Mochrie, and Ryan Stiles) were also hired as regular cast comedians to perform various comic games and sketches with other comedians and celebrities. Drew Carey hosted the American version of the show, and Ryan Stiles was also the executive producer. The show concluded after eight successful seasons in 2007.

On the revival of the show on the CW Network in 2013, Mochrie, along with his co-stars Stiles and Brady, returned to join the new season of  Whose Is It Anyway?.

Later Career

In addition to his portrayal on  Whose Is It Anyway?,  Mochrie appeared in numerous other TV series, stage productions, and films. The television series he appeared, include  The Campbell  (1986),  Kung Fu: The Legend Continues  (1995),  Goosebumps  (1996), and  Once a Thief  (1998).

'Getting Along Famously'

Mochrie starred in the TV movie  Getting Along Famously  in 2005, portraying the character Kip Delaney. He also reprised the role in a series version of the same show under the same name but released a year later in 2006.

Getting Along Famously , as a movie, was set in Toronto with a 1964 setting and revolved around a CBC variety program,  It's Ruby and Kip . The program featured Colin Mochrie and Debra McGrath, a real-life couple, as a married/divorced/remarried TV pair, Kip Delaney and Ruby Kendall.  Getting Along Famously , as a series, was a spin-off of the given movie encompassing the same but extended plotline; bickers and feuds between Kip and Ruby.

Besides starring in both the movie and series adaptation of  Getting Along Famously , the real-life couple Colin Mochrie and Debra McGrath created and wrote its concept and script.

"It's great to see something you put to paper and suddenly you are responsible to employ the cast and crews and the executives so there is that excitement," Mochrie said in a 2020 YouTube Live stream by Nemrocomedy about his creating and writing experience for  Getting Along Famously .

"We hired all our friends because they were great actors and funny people and we wanted it to be a set where everyone could relax and do the best work they can and feel free to add anything. So, there was a really collaborative effort," he added.

Documentary

Mochrie has also worked on a few documentaries. He was a cast member of the 11 minutes documentary,  Intangible Adorations: Experience the Icon  in 2019. The documentary featured accomplished black celebrities from Hollywood films, television, comedy, and sports.

Similarly, he was also a part of the 2021 documentary  Act Social . The documentary focused on dwindling civic conversation from modern society. Moreover, it used the style of improv comedy to settle disputes. For instance, Karl Rove, a Republican, did improv with Colin Mochrie and enticed a Democratic-dominated group. To improve listening skills, police officers did improv with local children. Likewise, using improvisation, Dr. Daniel J. Wiener saved couples from divorce. Additionally, Second City improv comedians were put in a functional MRI machine by Dr. Charles Limb in the show to study the occurrences in the brain when we improvise.

Mochrie holds the credit for the production of a few TV shows. He was an executive producer on the 2005 film  Getting Along Famously  and its television series adaptation (2006). It also took time for Mochrie to adjust to calling her by the name Kinley. He said in an interview, "We knew Luke for 26 years so it was very hard to quickly change that. And even now, there are still times when we slip. We're certainly a lot better," he said at the time. "So we now have a Kinley."
