For Collective Soul, they didn't let the pandemic end their 26-year tradition of non-stop touring. That's put them in prime position to return to the road in 2022 without any rust to shed, ready to rock a set full of fan favorites. This comes as the band continues to support their 2019 album, Blood, which is available in both streaming and physical formats. Collective Soul are also selling a collaborative lyrical "tree-shirt" with eco-lifestyle brand One Golden Thread that is available here with a portion of the T-shirt proceeds going to benefit Alzheimer's care, support and research.

Switchfoot, meanwhile, are touring in support of their 12th studio album, Interrobang, which is available to stream or purchase in physical form here .

Collective Soul's Ed Roland says. “It’s always a thrill to go on tour, but this year is going to be so special because we get to be with not only our friends but a great band, Switchfoot! Southern boys meet Southern California boys, which will be a fun time for all!”

Switchfoot singer/guitarist Jon Foreman adds. “Been fans of COLLECTIVE SOUL and their songs from day one. Can’t believe it took this long for us to finally tour together. Psyched it’s finally happening!”

Tickets for the run will go on sale to the general public this Friday (April 1) at 10AM local time. VIP packages for Collective Soul will be available starting today (March 29) at 10AM local time via the group's website .

About Collective Soul:

Coming hot off a triumphant, yearlong celebration of their 25th anniversary in 2019, the very last thing Collective Soul plan on doing in 2022 is rest on their laurels. If anything, these five fiery Georgia-bred rockers are only just getting started with the next phase of a thriving career that has seen them move millions of records and wow multitudes of fans all across the globe.

Thanks to the warm reception of their acclaimed 2019 album release  Blood , Collective Soul are quite galvanized to add as much fresh material into their live sets as they can. “I think  Blood  is the beginning of a lot of good music to come,” observes frontman and chief songwriter E Roland, adding that even more new tunes are already in the works. “We’re doing the best that we can do.  Blood  is an accumulation of all the different styles we’ve used over the years — but it’s still Collective Soul. I think it’s the best we’ve ever done. I know you  should  think that, but I really  do  think it’s the best. It’s a good, consistent record. We’re just so proud of it.”

Collective Soul  absolutely  have a right to be proud of their new music, given that a number of key  Blood  tracks all fit seamlessly into their always dynamic live sets. Indeed, the hardcharging positivity of “Right as Rain,” the deeply introspective “Observation of Thoughts,” the full-throttle insistence of “Over Me,” and the acoustified good vibes of “Porch Swing” all stand tall live alongside such indelibly durable hits like “Shine,” “December,” “The World I Know,” “Gel,” “AYTA,” and “Heavy.”

Such effortless setlist integration really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, considering how smoothly Collective Soul leapt into the national consciousness with the unbridled achievements of their multi-platinum 1993 debut  Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid , a career-making debut album that contains such mega-smash hits like the aforementioned “Shine” and “Breathe.” In one fell swoop,  Hints Allegations  cemented Collective Soul’s status as the jukebox heroes of a new generation.

The special sonic elixir that fuels Collective Soul’s continued success story is a straightforward one: a profound mixture of insightful songwriting and impeccable band chemistry. “So much of what we do is based on the camaraderie-ship of the band,” Roland acknowledges. “The five us continue to work together as a family, and I’ve never been at more ease — and never been more pleased — than going onstage with these guys night after night.”

All of these fine textural nuances add up to a sharply focused and most exciting Collective Soul 2020, with even more invigorating live sets coming, straight ahead. “We want to play the hits as we always do, but we also love sharing new music with our fans,” concludes Roland. His sacred promise to everyone who attends a Collective Soul show: “We’re going at it  hard , everyone! We’re going  hard .”

Heaven has clearly shined its light down on Collective Soul, now entering Year 26 with all cylinders firing, and no end in sight. Come on out and bask in their continual glow.

Collective Soul celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019, releasing their 10th studio album to critical acclaim. Blood debuted at No. 3 on Billboards Alternative Albums chart, helping inject new material into the bands live sets. I think Blood is the beginning of a lot of good music to come, singer and songwriter E Roland said after its release. I think its the best weve ever done. The band had rocketed to fame with the 1993 Shine, the lead single to the multi-platinum album Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid.

Switchfoot has sold nearly 10 million copies worldwide, releasing their 12th full-length album interrobang in August of 2021. The album was recorded in a burst of pent-up mid-pandemic creativity in 2020 and 21. They have performed sold-out tours in front of millions of fans in over 40 countries following their breakthrough 2003 double-platinum album The Beautiful Letdown, which helped launch the band with a string of alternative radio hits. In 2011, Switchfoots seventh studio album Hello Hurricane won the Grammy for Best Rock Gospel Album.

CONCERT REVIEW: COLLECTIVE SOUL and SWITCHFOOT Take Pompano Beach on a Trip Down Memory Lane to the 90s (September 16th, 2022)

collective soul switchfoot tour

Photos by Joel Barrios

If one were to have taken a survey of Generation X trustees of the 90s alternative rock craze on their thoughts regarding a time when said music would pass into classic rock status, most might have laughed at the very suggestion. But now with nearly 3 decades having passed since the rise and fall of the Seattle grunge scene and the subsequent rise of post-grunge, many of those same rebellious youths whom originally staked their claim on the rock genre would be introducing their families to the same bands now in the throes of middle age. Yet when putting aside the advancing years of the musicians whom helped forge the sound most readily associated with the 1990s, there is little wanting in the way of energy and creativity for those still actively in the game, and this goes doubly so for one of the earliest offshoots of the sound pioneered by the likes of P earl Jam and Soundgarden , namely Atlanta, Georgia’s own Collective Soul . This is a fact that scores upon scores of concertgoers in Pompano Beach, Florida would learn firsthand on September 16 th , 2022 as said southern icons and their younger California-born squires and eclectic masters in their own rite Switchfoot rolled into town.

The pairing of these two bands in a touring capacity makes a great deal of sense given the general positive energy that they bring to the table, with Switchfoot having an early connection to the Christian rock scene, whereas Collective Soul was tangentially tied to it via the entertainment media due to the inspirational lyrical content. Nevertheless, when the former took the stage, this positive energy was coupled with a level of force and heaviness that was quite intense compared to their studio output. Whether one credits it to the largess of the stage they occupied, or the kinetic energy that the crowd transmitted to the bad with their avid applause, Switchfoot would be in the zone for their entire performance. Lead vocalist Jon Foreman would prove both a highly charismatic performer and also a witty orator between songs, frequently making quips about the band’s highly varied repertoire, and often capitalizing on the air of nostalgia that hung in the air with a number of asides about coming up in the 90s, not the least auspicious being a highly complementary nod to the Collective Soul . Bassist Tim Foreman and guitarist Jerome Fontamillas were bundles of energy, freely frolicking and head-banging about the stage, though Jon would largely steal the show with his even more involved stage activities.

The resulting set that would see this animated quartet bringing the thunder down upon South Florida would underscore both Switchfoot ’s dedication to stylistic variation and driving down 90s rock memory lane. Things started off with a resounding bang via the funky yet fierce “Take My Fire”, one of their newer entries off 2019’s “ Native Tongue,” and the heavier tone of the arrangement made for an interesting contrast with the fuzzier quality of the original studio version of the song. On the other hand, the generally driving and hard rocking banger in 2005’s “Stars” that followed would fit the 90s motif a bit more consistently, and would provide the perfect segue into a set that would split equal time between exploring this outfit’s expansive back catalog and also covering a number of seminal classics from the 90s. True to form, a raucous rendition of Beastie Boys classic “Sabotage”, complete with a perfect imitation of Ad-Rock’s boisterous timbre courtesy of Jon Foreman , would find said front man jumping the barricade and proceeding to complete the song and two more originals from amongst the crowd. Upon things setting down, a riveting acoustic medley of several familiar classics, including by not limited to Ray Charles ’ “Hit The Road Jack”, Lynyrd Skynyrd ’s “Free Bird” and Tom Petty ’s “Free Fallin’” would stand between the aforementioned pandemonium and an equally energetic set of six more Switchfoot anthems, with the hard rocking beast “Meant To Live” drawing the loudest response from the crowd.

SWITCHFOOT Photo Gallery:

collective soul switchfoot tour

With such a high bar having been set, expectations would normally have worked against any band seeking to take the stage, but Collective Soul is not a band that lives in a world where things go normally. Those old enough to remember the days when this outfit was coming up in the recent aftermath of the grunge explosion might well remember a larger than life stage persona being exhibited by front man Ed Roland via the music videos of noted singles such as “Breathe” and “Gel” , but the flamboyantly colorful getup he would sport against the plainer clothes of the rest of the band alone rose to a new level of auspiciousness, with the massive hat and glasses on his head being all but pure gravy. Yet when the rubber hit the road, this southern quintet’s unique visual presentation was a small detail alongside the stellar musical performance turned in by all involved, with the highly dynamic yet almost nonchalant quality of Roland ’s larger-than-life baritone standing in front of a dense foundation provided by bassist Will Turpin and drummer Johnny Rabb , with the solid riff work of brother Dean Roland and the vintage shredding solo work of lead guitarist Jesse Triplett rounding out a sound that rivaled a studio recording in terms of polish and precision.

In contrast to the often funky and occasionally pop/hip-hop trappings accompanying Switchfoot ’s original offerings to the table, Collective Soul would present more of a standard hard rock-grounded repertoire, though they wouldn’t be fully averse to throwing in a few curveballs. High-octane cruiser and recent release “Cut The Cord” would set the tone on a decidedly hard and heavy note, and the subsequent performances of older bangers “Heavy” and infectious new entry “All Our Pieces” maintain the same level of energy and flair as Will Turpin attempted to match Roland ’s flamboyance with his own on stage high-jinks, including some well-timed leaps from the drum risers. But it would be with the entry of seminal classic and mid-90s post-grunge smash “Shine” that the audience would go into full frenzy mode, never letting up even when mellower classics like “The World I Know” and “December” came to the fore, with Ed donning an acoustic guitar alongside brother Dean and virtuoso Jesse in a manner reminiscent of Boston . Holding firm to the 90s nostalgia factor, they’d also offer a killer rendition of R.E.M. ’s “The One I Love” and also reached further back with a homage to the original singer-songwriter in “Bob Dylan Where Are You Today”, also proving to be a highlight moment of crowd interaction as Ed recounted the inspiration for the song in a manner that was both poignant and humorous.

Rarely does it occur that a pair of bands so totally live up to their names, as the spectacle that unfolded on Pompano Beach was an exercise in shifting gears rapidly while both getting on the good foot and coming together in one celebratory spirit. Often the 90s are remembered as a time of generational resentment and socio-political disquiet, but the picture that was painted here betrayed a level of optimism and joy that was more comparable to that of the rocking 70s. To be fair, both Switchfoot and Collective Soul were not averse to exploring serious territory and even adding a touch of melancholy into the auditory canvass, but the level of elation and camaraderie that was inspired definitely spoke to a spirit of optimism that generally typified the decade once the alternative rock scene branched out beyond the Pacific Northwest. It was a grand occasion that spoke to a very specific time and generation, yet was equally accessible to those who were too young to have originally lived it.

Relive the Utah Concert Experience!

Collective Soul & Switchfoot

Collective Soul and Switchfoot w/ Jade Jackson• August 15, 2022• Sandy Amphitheater

Reviewed and Photographed by Justin Lagman

There is something special about concerts on a warm beautiful summer night. It was even more special for rock music fans. They got not 1, but 2 well known alt-rock bands that have been at the forefront of rock music for a very long time now. Collective Soul is celebrating their 30th anniversary with an extended tour featuring San Diego-based Grammy winners, Switchfoot. It seems like summer has flown by. We’ re trying to squeeze in all the summer activities before the weather cools down. This is my first time photographing a concert at Sandy Amphitheater. There is always something special about checking off another box on my list of Utah concert venues.

It was a beautiful Monday night. The crowd was filled to the very top. The lawn areas started to fill up with chairs and blankets. The merchandise line started from the bottom all the way to the very top of the amphitheater.

Jade Jackson

Starting off the night was Jade Jackson. An American Country musician born and raised in California. I thought she was the perfect opener for a band heavy night of music. She performed an acoustic solo set. It was absolutely stunning. Her voice didn’t have much of a country twang, but more soulful. She covered the classic Bruce Springsteen song “Dancing In The Dark”. It was beautiful to see some of the crowd sing along. You could see nostalgia in people’s eyes and it felt like they were taken back to a couple decades ago.

Even though Jade only performed 5 songs, the crowd definitely loved her. And they have found a new artist to look forward to seeing again. Jade is busy touring with Collective Soul and Switchfoot. But she did release her second full album titled Wilderness in 2019. The album features her songwriting improvements and storytelling about her personal life experiences.

Moving right into the co-headliners was a band I’ve heard of, but I’ve never fully paid attention. Switchfoot is a band name I consistently saw at karaoke bars. Which means, they have a long list of classic hits. As soon as the band stepped on stage, the crowd was electric. You could see a majority of the crowd wearing Switchfoot’s current merch and from years ago. Lead singer Jon Foreman jumped around the stage and turned up the electricity of the crowd. For a man that is in his 40s, he looks extremely youthful. This guy has been in the music business for decades. Yet he shows so much energy and excitement for the Salt Lake City crowd.

The whole band was fireworks right from the beginning. A beautiful moment that really stood out for me was a lady in the crowd with a huge sign that said “Happy Birthday Tim.” Tim is the brother of lead singer Jon and he is also the bassist of the band. Jon stopped the show to take the time and bring the poster on stage.

Switchfoot covered the legendary Beastie Boys with the song, “Sabotage.” As soon as this song finished, Jon decided to jump off the stage and join the crowd. He made his way above the soundboard and performed for the upper level crowd. I have never seen a performer like this. It was absolutely an amazing scene. The fans would swarm Jon and take selfies, but some just wanted to sing and dance along. I couldn’t believe that he stayed up there for 3 songs. He really took the time to interact with all his fans.

When he came back on stage, they brought out Jade Jackson for a duet on “I Won’t Let You Go”. It was a nice switch from the rock songs to a more ballad style song. I don’t often review rock bands, but I’m a huge fan. Switchfoot has to be one of the best performers I’ve ever seen. I would love to watch them again in the future.

Chatting With Fans

The sunset started rolling in and there was already quite a breeze coming in. Which shows you that summer concerts are coming to an end in a couple of weeks! Fans hit the concessions and refreshed their snacks before the main show. I was able to chat with a couple fans and they were asking me if I knew about Collective Soul. Unfortunately, I hadn’t heard of the band before. But there is something so special about learning about a new artist while you’re at their concert. I was told that “you’ll know their songs when you hear them.”

Collective Soul

Collective Soul didn’t waste any time and they stepped up on stage and lit up the crowd. Everyone was on their feet and it was a sight to see. From me, who’s never heard of this band to seeing dedicated fans who are young and old. The lead singer, Ed Roland, donned a floral suit and pant combo which reminded me of Wrestling legend, Ric Flair. Ed had a youthful energy to him. Age didn’t matter and he is going to do what he does best and that is Rock n roll. He danced and played with the mic stand and showed pure showmanship. The song that really stood out for me was “Shine”. I knew it right away when the instruments came in and the band played.

This is the sign of a legendary band. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know them, but you’ve definitely heard of this song. It is a classic. The passion from the fans singing every word of the song is what music is all about.

It has been a while since I’ve photographed and reviewed a concert. But this was a perfect show to be back for. The band made me feel like I’ve been watching them for many years now. The energy of the crowd didn’t level down at all. The older generation bringing their kids here is also an awesome scene. The music taste of the future destination is in good hands if they all have a little old soul in them. Music has definitely changed in recent times. But bands like Collective Soul and Switchfoot have rode the wave and stayed relevant today. If you can get a chance to see Collective Soul during their summer tour, you should immediately do it. If you go in there like me who had no idea about their music and legacy. I suggest you see them if you could.

Collective Soul and Switchfoot Ensured the Wait for This Tour was Worth it With Vibrant Show Sunday in Saint Louis

collective soul switchfoot tour

–by Sean Derrick

It’s hard to believe Collective Soul has been together for 30 years now. It’s almost harder to believe their live show has gotten better over the years. But that was the case Sunday night at St. Louis Music Park in Maryland Heights as Collective Soul co-headlined a show with Switchfoot for a memorable evening.

I first saw Collective Soul play a powerful show back on July 21 1995 at Mississippi Nights. Fast forward 27 years later and they have grown so much as a live band.

Lead singer Ed Roland’s transformation in stage presence alone could be a subject of a TED Talk, but also his vocal strength and banter back and forth with the audience also has aged like a fine wine.

The rest of the band (founding members bassist Will Turpin and guitarist Dean Roland, along with drummer Johnny Rabb and lead guitarist Jesse Triplett) have found a chemistry that, for lack of a more appropriate term, just fits and produces a vivid live experience.

They kicked off their set with “Precious Declaration” from 1997’s “Disciplined Breakdown” before performing a new track, and their latest single “All Our Pieces” from their upcoming album

Vibrating drops August 12 from Fuzze-Flex Records. Roland made sure the crowd remembered that date with some witty interaction throughout the evening.

Roland, replete in a patterned pink suit, talked openly about his situation that gave light to, what he calls, the greatest divorce song ever in “Better Now” with lessons learned from living in his parent’s basement afterwards that helped shape him in the uplifting direction he has taken since then. It was a life lesson well learned that has flowed over into his live shows and the fans thank you for that.

Co-headliner Switchfoot had the difficult job of following a moving solo set from Jade Jackson, but did a magnificent job of getting the crowd up and lively from the start with “If the House Burns Down Tonight”, “Stars” and the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” where lead singer Jon Foreman racing into the crowd at the end of the song.

But he didn’t just go into the first few rows, no. He made his way straight to very back of the risers as the band played “Bull in a China Shop”.

The band (including bassist Tim Foreman, drummer Chad Butler, keyboardist/guitarist Jerome Fontamillas, and guitarist Boaz Roberts) thrilled the audience with “Dare You to Move”, “Meant to Live” and “Dark Horses”. “Dark Horses” has a special place in St. Louis fan’s hearts as it was the song associated with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team’s improbable run to the 2011 World Series title in 2011.

Foreman gushed about how much of an influence Collective Soul had on him getting started. He told stories about his friendship with Ed Roland and his generosity towards Jon. The tour had been in the works for 3 years but had to be pushed back to 2022 (Thanks Covid). Better late than never.
