How to visit Australia without flying: Holland America launches new Grand Voyage

cruise from long beach to australia

The long-haul flight can be enough to keep some U.S. travelers from visiting Australia . But a new Holland America Line itinerary will offer an alternate route.

The cruise line’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage will sail round-trip from San Diego, California in 2026, taking guests down under and back over 93 days.

"Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world's most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States," Beth Bodensteiner, the line’s chief commercial officer, said in a news release . "Our team crafted this itinerary to show guests the parts of Australia and New Zealand they expect to visit, but also included frequently asked for, but rarely visited, ports throughout Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands."

When is Holland America’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage?

The cruise will depart on Jan. 4, 2026 aboard the line’s 1,432-guest Zaandam ship.

Where will the cruise sail?

The ship will visit 44 ports in 10 countries. Passengers will make their way to Hawaii first before heading to the South Pacific. The ship will then visit Australia – almost circling the country – and New Zealand, followed by Tonga and French Polynesia on the way back to San Diego.

The itinerary features two days of scenic cruising at the Great Barrier Reef and four late-night departures in Adelaide, Australia and the French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine. Guests will also stay overnight in six ports, including Honolulu, Sydney and Auckland, giving them ample time to explore.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you?

How much does the cruise cost?

The cruise currently starts at $17,699 per person based on double occupancy, according to Holland America’s website . Travelers who book by June 16, 2025 can get perks like a Surf Wi-Fi package, airport transfers in San Diego, a 3% pay-in-full discount and more thrown in (though they vary by stateroom category).

Exciting Cruises to the South Pacific

On a South Pacific cruise with Celebrity, you'll venture to remote ports with thousands of years of history and culture layered into a natural landscape of breathtaking beauty. Travel to pristine beaches with turquoise lagoons, warm white sand, and natural splendor found in very few other places on Earth.

Explore Papeete and its iconic landscape made famous by artists such as Paul Gauguin. In Lautoka, Fiji, take a catamaran to an exquisite South Sea island for a day of snorkeling and exploring pristine beaches. During your stop in Raiatea, explore one of the most sacred sites in Polynesia, Taputapuatea Marae, an ancient temple and one-time site of religious ceremonies. Uncover a world of rich history and natural wonder on a captivating cruise to the South Pacific.

South Pacific Cruise Highlights

It's no secret that the islands of the South Pacific are home to some of the world’s best beaches. On the island of Papeete in Tahiti, you'll find Matavai Bay, where white sand and aquamarine waters make for the perfect place to relax. In Fiji, head to Lautoka's Vunabaka Bay for an unforgettable experience snorkeling over brilliant coral reefs. Raiatea boasts the immaculate, unspoiled beaches of nearby Taha'a, a secluded island just a short boat ride from the port.

Polynesian Culture

One of the most valuable experiences you can have while traveling the South Pacific is to learn about Polynesia’s rich cultures. The isolated position of the islands has given rise to traditions of music, storytelling, dance, and art. In Fiji, visit a typical village, where you’ll be welcomed with a traditional ceremony and kava juice. For a taste of local culture in Noumea, head to the vibrant municipal market, filled with exotic fruit, fragrant flowers, artisanal crafts, and snack bars.

Wildlife enthusiasts will find plenty of animal encounters during a South Pacific cruise, both ashore and in the water. Snorkel from the beaches of Tahiti and you could be swimming among rays, dolphins, black-tipped reef sharks, and sea turtles. While in Fiji, take a nature tour through Colo-i-Suva Forest Park. Stroll past rushing streams and tranquil pools, one with a rope swing, and be on the lookout for dazzling birds like robins, fantails, and the colorful musk parrot.

Featured South Pacific Cruise Ports

Pape'ete, tahiti.

There’s plenty to see in and around Papeete—if you can tear yourself away from Tahiti’s glorious beaches and coral reefs, that is. Visit the house where James Norman Hall lived and shop for juicy tropical fruits at the Papeete Market. Take a 4x4 safari into the lush backcountry, a world of jagged peaks, waterfalls, and dense rainforest. See the bay where Captain James Cook made landfall. Learn more about island crafts, including pareo tying and palm weaving.

Lautoka, Fiji

Lautoka is a laid-back city at the heart of Fiji’s sugar cane industry and is home to the largest sugar mill in the South Pacific. In town, chat with locals at the vibrant Lautoka Market and stroll the pretty botanical garden. Admire the Krishna Kaliya Hindu Temple, brilliant with sculptures and murals. And don’t miss those dazzling beaches; a catamaran will whisk you to a remote atoll of swaying palms, white sands, and sparkling seas for the ultimate South Pacific beach day.

Noumea, New Caledonia

Capital of the French territory of New Caledonia, Nouméa has both French and Polynesian influences. Visit St. Joseph’s Cathedral and the City of Nouméa Museum to learn about the history of the island. Head for the bustling market to sample bougna, chicken or fish slow-cooked in banana leaves with yam, sweet potato, and banana. Relax on exquisite coral sand beaches and snorkel over vibrant reefs in the sapphire Pacific.

Why Go On a Transpacific Cruise?

The best cruise experiences are those that combine fun family activities with relaxing me-time. Keep your finger on the pulse of all onboard happenings with the Cruise Planner, the ultimate guide to managing your cruise.

You are travelling to some of the most picturesque places on earth – islands made for on-foot exploration! Be sure to bring comfortable, closed shoes for jungle treks and mesh water shoes for any pebbly beaches.

Once you book a cruise, start planning your experiences. Many, like speciality dining, require reservations, which you can make online. But for the children’s programmes, the kiddos must be signed on the day of embarkation – and space is limited!

FOR THE FOODIES Palate-Pleasing South Pacific Plates

Gastronomy ranks high on the best cruise adventures – and you’re in for taste-bud-tempting treats! You’ll savour delicious fusions, such as the flavours of France and Polynesia, and freshness beyond compare.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia, Tuna Salad

Fork Up Poisson Cru

Poisson Cru, Tahiti’s national dish, is an unforgettable taste of Polynesian heaven. A type of ceviche, Poisson Cru combines sushi-grade tuna, fresh vegetables, lime juice and coconut milk. For some of the best to be had, along with spectacular sunsets, The Roulottes – Papeete’s waterfront food trucks – are not to be missed.

French_Baquette

Bite into a Crusty Baguette

It has been said that the French baguette should be a Polynesian food group! This delicious bread, with its crisp golden-brown crust and soft airy interior, shows up in the most unexpected places, such as sweet-and-sour chow mein sandwiches. For breakfast, enjoy a warm, just-out-of-the-oven slab slathered with mango spread. Yum!

New Zealand Maori Food

Try Hāngī-Cooked Foods

A traditional Māori method, New Zealand’s hāngī cooking uses heated rocks buried in an umu or pit oven. Chicken, pork, lamb, pumpkin, sweet potatoes – even a hāngī-steamed dessert pudding! – are some of the delicious offerings you can enjoy. When in Auckland, tuck into these delicacies at the centrally-located (and delicious!) Māori Kitchen.

Aurora australis visible in southerly areas of Australia in 2022

Spectacular southern lights seen across Australia after ‘extreme’ solar storm

Aurora australis has lit up skies across southern Australia after an “extreme” geomagnetic solar storm.

Social media users in posted pictures of brightly coloured skies in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and across the Tasman in New Zealand.

However, much of New South Wales missed out on the spectacle due to heavy cloud and rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned the storm that creates the beautiful auroras could also threaten infrastructure and essential services, including power supply.

Sign up for Guardian Australia’s free morning and afternoon email newsletters for your daily news roundup

The BoM’s space weather forecasting centre said the storm’s effects reached Earth on Friday night and would continue to Sunday morning.

The BoM said the best time to see the aurora australis was between Saturday 10pm and Sunday 2am, from a dark spot with unobstructed views south.

Absolutely biblical skies in Tasmania at 4am this morning. I’m leaving today and knew I could not pass up this opportunity for such a large solar storm. Here’s the image. I actually had to de-saturate the colours. Clouds glowing red. Insane. Shot on Nikon. Rt appreciated pic.twitter.com/210hlkmoeg — Sean O' Riordan (@seanorphoto) May 10, 2024

On Wednesday and Thursday, there were four coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun, meaning highly charged plasma erupted and streamed into space. When those charged particles, known as the solar wind, hit the Earth’s magnetic field, they create the stunning visual displays known as auroras.

“The last time a G5 geomagnetic storm was observed was in 2003,” the BoM said in a statement.

“The warning issued for this event informs government and critical infrastructure operators so they can take action to mitigate potential impacts on infrastructure and essential services.

“The bureau continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates of significant changes.”

Auroras were visible across Tasmania and South Australia on Saturday morning, along with other parts of the southern hemisphere.

“When G5 geomagnetic conditions occur, bright auroras will be visible at unusually low latitudes, including dark-sky locations near Sydney and Perth,” the BoM said.

“Auroras may also be visible from as far north as southern Queensland and other low-latitude locations.”

The bigger the storm, the closer to the equator the lights – normally only visible closer to Earth’s poles – appear.

The northern lights, aurora borealis, were also visible across large parts of Europe, including in the UK , on Saturday morning their time.

However, solar storms can also hit power grids, causing outages, and disrupt satellite services used for communications, global positioning, navigation, and timing services as well as high frequency radio waves.

The bureau forecast a G4 (severe) level event, a measure of global activity that refers to fluctuations in Earth’s magnetic field and ranges from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme). According to the BoM’s website, the level hit G5 on Saturday morning, but could reduce to a G3 by Sunday.

“The solar wind environment is currently very enhanced. The solar wind speed is expected to be very strong,” the BoM’s website said. “There is currently a sequence of CMEs heading toward the Earth and further CME arrivals are expected.

“HF radio communication conditions are expected to be very poor.”

Tom Cruise goes shirtless at beach in Spain on break from filming ‘Mission: Impossible 8’

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Tom Cruise showed off his chiseled physique while enjoying some much-needed downtime at Mallorca’s Formentor Beach in Spain over the weekend.

Cruise, 61, appeared to be in great spirits as he took a dip in the water alongside filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, whom he is collaborating with on an upcoming project.

Tom Cruise

The “Mission: Impossible 8” star rocked a pair of navy swim trunks while putting his enviable abs on full display.

Earlier in the day, Cruise was spotted wearing a gray V-neck, a tan fedora and chunky white sneakers as he boarded a small boat with Iñarritu.

The duo looked deep in conversation as they took the dinghy out to a massive sailboat for the day.

Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu and Tom Cruise

The pair are in the early stages of creating the Mexican-born director’s first English-language film since his 2015 hit, “The Revenant.”

While the film will be produced and directed by Iñarritu, Cruise will play the lead role. However, the plot details have been kept under wraps.

Meanwhile, Cruise has been busy filming the new “Mission: Impossible” across Europe — including in the United Kingdom and Norway.

The actor flocked to the slightly warmer destination of Mallorca while the cast and crew are on a break from shooting.

While it’s unclear when Cruise will be heading back up north to resume filming, he likely won’t be seeing ex-girlfriend Elsina Khayrova while in town.

Earlier this year, sources told Page Six the former couple met at one of the actor’s “top secret” Sunday tea parties at his Hyde Park penthouse.

“Tom has been having tea parties on Sundays in London,” a source told us in February. “He’s much more comfortable in London than in LA. He has butlers and homemade cakes and it’s all very British. Someone brought her.”

Khayrova was formerly married to Russian oligarch Dimitry Tsvetkov.

In an interview with the Daily Mail , the international diamond trader claimed their years-long divorce battle cost him over $180 million. He also claimed the socialite spent nearly $15 million on designer clothes and handbags during their 11-year marriage.

“Irrespective of whoever she’s with, Tom Cruise or anybody else, they should be aware that she likes the finer things in life and has expensive and luxurious taste,” he told the outlet. “Tom should keep his eyes and wallet wide open.”

Tom Cruise

Cruise split from the millionaire divorcee after less than four months of dating due to her ex-husband’s remarks in the media .

Sources told us in March that the “Top Gun: Maverick” star broke up with Khayrova to avoid issues with her outspoken ex.

“He’s filming and can’t be shooting and have her husband saying stuff every time he is mentioned in the press,” an insider told us. “They just didn’t want to deal with the ex husband coming up with something nasty to say every few weeks.”

Florence in California: Carnival launches new Italian-style cruise ship

cruise from long beach to australia

Carnival Cruise Line is bringing a touch of Italy to Southern California.

The line launched Carnival Firenze, inspired by its namesake city, this week. The vessel sailed its maiden voyage from its Long Beach homeport on Thursday.

“We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now this ship is giving us the opportunity to offer more fun to more people sailing from Long Beach,” Christine Duffy, the line’s president, said in a news release . “The recipe combining this ship’s beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team’s hospitality is, in a word, perfecto!”

The ship is the second in the Carnival Fun Italian Style concept after sister ship Carnival Venezia joined the fleet last summer. Both were originally part of Costa Cruises – also owned by parent company Carnival Corp. – before being rehomed.

Where will Carnival Firenze sail?

The roughly 5,000-guest ship will offer Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera cruises ranging from three to seven days. Stops include destinations like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Catalina Island.

What can guests expect ?

Built in 2020, Firenze was refurbished this year to add Carnival-specific touches. Those include staple venues like the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse and JavaBlue Cafe.

But the line leans into the ship’s Italian motif. The ship’s atrium was designed with Florence’s Piazza del Duomo in mind, and the Lido deck takes influence from the Italian Riviera. There’s even a replica of Michelangelo’s David on board that used to be on Carnival Pride (the real sculpture is in Florence’s Accademia Gallery).

The theme extends to the food and drink options, with eateries like Italian specialty restaurant Il Viaggio, Mexican-Italian fusion venue Tomodoro and La Strada Grill serving Italian street food. Frizzante specializes in bubbly drinks, and passengers can sip craft cocktails and Italian coffee at Amari.

Other features include the WaterWorks water park and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

How long should I take a cruise?: Here's how short and long cruises compare

How much does Carnival Firenze cost?

Prices vary based on sailing date and other factors, but a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise departing on May 30 now starts at $409 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival’s website . The fare includes much of the food on the ship, drinks like regular coffee and iced tea and more.

In our small outback town, my friends and I square off in a month-long game of tag

A woman in a red jumper and blue jeans, holding a basket, tries to avoid being 'tagged' by another woman in a supermarket.

For a couple of years, a group of friends in my hometown of Longreach have been playing an annual month-long game of tag.

The rules are simple. You can't get the "butcher back" — meaning you can't re-tag the person who has tagged you — and you can't tag your spouse or partner.

There's a group chat where tags are posted, sometimes with a video so everyone knows who is "it".

The person who is "it" on the last day of the month at 11:59pm loses the game. Other than that, it's open slather and sometimes things get a little out of hand.

Some of the more epic tags include:

  • A player being tagged while waiting in emergency with a bad back (he was tagged lightly and took it in good humour);
  • A family whose electricity was turned off at the switchbox so the tagger could sneak into the house under the cover of darkness;
  • A prospective target running out of a restaurant mid-meal, never to return, and
  • Someone hiding in a friend's ensuite for hours until they returned home from work.

People also get chased out of the town's supermarket and a junior sporting referee was also interrupted mid-match — all in pursuit of a tag.

It's worth noting that no one has been harmed in this game of tag that's arguably gotten well out of hand.

And a disclaimer here: in our small town, where the tag players are all friends, hiding in an ensuite for someone to return home is not nearly as disturbing as it sounds, and everyone has taken it in good humour. I promise!

ABC reporter Nicole bond hides in a bush.

I joined the game after a trip to the doctor

For whatever reason, I'd never joined in the tag game. But during last year's game, under doctors' orders, I decided to play.

I was sitting in my GP's office when I was confronted with a shocking realisation.

The usual questions were asked, exercise, diet, alcohol consumption — too much of some, not enough of the other.

Then, one I didn't expect: "What do you do for fun?"

Simple question, but at this stage of life looking up out of my rut, I couldn't answer it. Could you?

I live a very conventional life — I'm a middle-aged, mid-career mother of three living in middle Australia. While I know I'm exceptionally fortunate, sometimes it can all feel a little, well, to use a term my tweens use … "meh".

The relentless routine of work, school drop-offs, grocery shopping, budgeting, homework, housework, yard work, getting the dog to the vet, selling fundraising raffle tickets and baking contributions for the cake stall can understandably run the best of us into a rut.

After a bit of navel-gazing, I decided I should at least try to take fun seriously and inject some into my already "bursting at the seams with obligations" life.

How do you do that in a small rural outback town in Queensland? In my case, you play tag.

Why others play the game

Lou Seccombe drove 27 kilometres out of town at 11pm at night, then walked five kilometres from the highway to a homestead and climbed through a window to tag her target while in bed.

Another time, she drove 1,200 kilometres to tag a player who had moved from Longreach.

She explains she does it to make memories and show her children fun is important.

"All parents are worried they are working too hard, so I'm hoping when they look back at their childhood that they remember we had time to have fun," she says.

It's good, clean, honest, cheap, fun, she says. But it has its costs.

"We did actually replace the locks on the windows," she says.

Good fun is good for your health

Dr Tim Driscoll is a mental health specialist with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

He says finding moments of connection and fun are critical to maintaining good mental health.

He and his clinicians use "behavioural activation" as therapy when it's beneficial.

"Fun is key to our wellbeing, whether it's a distraction or the connection element, it has so many things that are important for our mental health," he says.

Dr Driscoll says play is as important for adults as it is for children.

"It's one of the best ways you can engage with life".

So now, when I'm asked what I do for fun?

I tell them say hide in bushes, chase friends down the street, trespass and enter my friends' homes, recruit their children to betray them and for one month a year let my inner child play.
