For a variety of reasons, some travelers are interested in cruising within the U.S. rather than hitting overseas ports. One reader asked simply:

“Except for Hawaii, I can’t seem to find any cruises that stay entirely within the U.S. Why is that?”

The short answer to the “why” part is easy: “Because some longstanding laws, designed to protect U.S. shipbuilding and cruising, had the unintended (but entirely expectable) consequence of virtually destroying them.” Specifically, any ship cruising only between U.S. ports must employ an almost totally U.S. crew. Hence the foreign registries (and foreign labor laws) applying to virtually all the big cuise ships. Until recently, U.S. laws also required use of U.S.-built ships, but some cruiselines have apparently been given a pass on that part. Still, these chauvinistic requirements have discouraged the mass-market lines from all-U.S. cruisers.

For whatever reason, if you want to cruise entirely within the U.S., you have only a few options. However, several cruiselines offer mainly-U.S. itineraries, stopping in a foreign country to satisfy the law.

Big-Ship Cruises

As far as I can tell, only one big-ship company, Norwegian Cruise Line , operates cruises entirely within the U.S. One ship—the Pride of America —cruises entirely within the Hawaiian Islands, with a crew that complies with U.S. citizenship requirements. Unfortunately, the several other U.S.-based companies that previously operated in this area have gone out of business.

Several big-ship cruise lines offer mainly-Hawaii cruises that get around the citizenship requirement by stopping in Ensenada or Vancouver/Victoria on trips between the Islands and the mainland, or detouring to Micronesia (about 1200 miles south of Hawaii) on cruises that don’t reach the mainland. You’ll find quite a few options with these itineraries. And most of the stops on the typical Alaska Inside Passage cruise itineraries are at U.S. ports—with, of course, the obligatory Canadian stops in Prince Rupert or Vancouver.

Over the last few years, New England-Canada cruises have become quite popular for the big-ship lines. Typical itineraries include some combination of New York, Boston, Portland, Halifax, Charlottetown, Quebec, and Montreal. And big-ship lines also now offer a few itineraries up and down the West Coast that call at some combination of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria. Any good cruise agency will have full particulars on these trips.

The Great Lakes

Given the size and diversity of the U.S.-Canadian Great Lakes system, I find it surprising that so few cruiselines cater to this region. Ships must be necessarily smaller than today’s mass-market megaships in order to transit two systems of tight locks—the Soo Canals between Superior and Michigan and the Welland Canal bypassing Niagara Falls—but in the recent past ships as large as 400 passengers have cruised these inland shores. For now, however, I found only two small-ship cruises currently operating, both stopping in Canada as well as the U.S.:

  • Travel Dynamics International runs a several-month program of Great Lakes cruises between Toronto and Duluth in the 110-passenger Celia II .
  • Peral Seas Cruises will operate one Toronto-Chicago round-trip next summer in its 210-passenger Pearl Seas Mist flagship.

A few years ago, Hapag-Lloyd operated several summer-season Great Lakes cruises in its luxury 410-passenger Columbus. This year, however, Columbus operated in other areas, and no Great Lakes itinerary is planned for 2010.

Rivers, Canals, and Waterways

A few operators run cruises on U.S. rivers, canals, and inland waterways. Because these trips involve so many waterways, the ships are typical river ships: shallow draft, only two or three decks to allow transit under bridges, and such.

  • American Canadian Caribbean Line , for now, appears to be the biggest player in this market. It operates a variety of river and lake cruises in North America in two 100-passenger riverboat-type ships: Grand Caribe and Grand Mariner . Main cruising areas include Chesapeake Bay, the Erie Canal, the New England Islands, and the St Lawrence, Hudson, and Sauguenay Rivers, plus seasonal positioning cruises through the Intracoastal Waterway between Rhode Island and Florida. The 84-passenger Niagara Prince operates several river-cruise links between Chicago and New Orleans on the Mississippi, Tennessee, and Illinois Rivers, plus some of the same destinations as the other ships.
  • CruiseWest will operate a full 2010 summer season of cruises on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest in the 96-passenger Spirit of ’98 and the 84-passenger Spirit of Discovery .

Sadly, as far as I can tell, the old-time (or fake old-time) riverboat liners Delta Queen, American Queen, and Mississippi Queen do not operate this year. In fact, Majestic America Line —parent of Delta Queen and American West Steamboat companies—is dormant and trying to find a buyer. Given today’s financial climate, I wouldn’t expect anything for 2010, either.

I suppose you might count the longer Alaska Ferry trips as “cruises,” in that the full-length trips last as long as some conventional cruises and the big ferries offer overnight cabin accommodations. However, the experience is completely different from a conventional cruise: no fancy meals, no variety of shipboard activities, and port stops too short (and often at odd hours) for any real touring. Moreover, if you buy cabin accommodations and onboard meals, ferry trips aren’t even less expensive than low-end cabins on big cruiseships.

Arranging the Deal

You can book all of the big-ship cruises through the “usual suspects” cruise agencies. Typically, the best rates are for last-minute options.

The big online sites, however, don’t cover small-ship cruises as well as they might. Consider going directly to the cruiselines or through specialist agencies such as Small Ship Cruises and Great Lakes Cruise Company . Wherever you buy, however, you can expect to pay a lot more, per day, than the “from” price for a megaship cruise on one of the mass-market lines.

6 Most Visited Cruise Destinations in the US Territories

Picture of Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • May 16, 2022

Cruises offer fantastic resort-style facilities. No flights, taxi cabs, or hotel check-ins are needed.

Planning your next vacation on a cruise?

To help you with your next fun-filled vacation, we compiled this list of the 6 most visited cruise destinations in the US territories.

1. St. Thomas, The US Virgin Islands

There are different cruise ship types, each offering a unique experience.

If you are a US citizen who loves to cruise without the bother of a passport, there are several options for you. One such option is St.Thomas of the US Virgin Islands .

Magens Bay, St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands are a group of Caribbean islands and an unincorporated territory of the United States. These islands have a tropical climate and minimal seasonal variation throughout the year.

St. Thomas, the most beautiful of them all, is a popular island cruise destination. If you have never been on an ocean cruise, you need to add this to your bucket list.

2. Nassau, The Bahamas

The Bahamas is made up of a string of 700 islands that connect the US with the Caribbean.

Nassau, The Bahamas’ capital, is a popular cruise destination with one of the region’s busiest ports. This jewel in the Caribbean has much to offer, and once you’ve disembarked for some sightseeing, you’ll be astounded by the natural beauty of these islands.

Beaches in Nassau, Bahamas.

Nassau is a mecca for sailing enthusiasts, beachgoers, and water sports enthusiasts. Here, you can have fantastic diving and snorkeling opportunities and a variety of excursions led by tour guides.

What’s more, you can do island-hopping and get to know the territory at your own pace. And if you’d like to explore, a Caribbean catamaran charter is the way to go.

3. Grand Cayman, The Cayman Islands

A world favorite among cruise destinations, the Cayman Islands is another excellent choice for you to consider.

The Cayman Islands is a 102-square-mile self-governing British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea. The Caymans comprise three islands: Cayman Brac, Little Cayman, and Grand Cayman.

Grand Cayman, the most populous of the three islands, offers the region’s best scuba diving and snorkeling. Though a cruise to the Caymans usually is only for a day, visiting The Cayman Islands will surely be the best day of your life.

4. Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea, off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. This island has been developed into a thriving resort island and cruise destination with all the entertainment you’d expect from an island holiday.

What’s even more interesting is Cozumel is a dream destination for those into the cultural heritage and ancient history.

Beach in Cozumel

5. Glacier Bay, Alaska

Alaska might be one of the most remote destinations in the US, but don’t disregard it when planning your next vacation, as Glacier Bay in Alaska has been a popular cruise destination for many years.

Stunning view of Glacier Bay, Alaska

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is part of a Unesco World Heritage Site, and a cruise is the best way to explore the area, as ground transportation is limited here.

You’ll be awe-struck by the sheer magnificence of the arctic rainforest, icy fjords, and glacial walls of white. Here, you can also enjoy whale watching.

6. St. Martin

Despite its small size, this French/Dutch-owned island is an extremely popular cruise ship destination.  Unbelievably, this area of less than 40 square miles is home to 120 nationalities with over 80 languages.

Here, you’ll have plenty more to do than just the usual sightseeing and duty-free shopping. You may explore ancient ruins, stroll through verdant tropical forests, relax on the pristine beach, or go ziplining.

The island also has a buzzing nightlife and eateries to cater to every taste. So treat your tastebuds and indulge in some of the island’s sumptuous cuisine.

The Best U.S. Cruises in 2023

By Janice Wald Henderson

This image may contain Outdoors Nature Land Ocean Sea Water Shoreline Coast Beach Island and Atoll

Could close-to-home U.S. cruises satisfy that out-to-sea itch? An ever-growing group of voyagers emphatically say yes. The memories of the challenges European cruisers faced last year surely contribute to U.S. cruises’ popularity boost. Besides, it’s so much easier (and far less costly) to find ports to drive to, or only require a short flight. Most American cruises possess the added allure of international flair, visiting the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada . Nearby waters deliver breathtaking natural beauty, adventurous shore excursions, and ship vibes that range from nonstop high-energy to pampering luxury. Here, several upcoming voyages sailing from American ports that rival any cruise in far-flung locales.

Booking tips for U.S. cruises

Where can you cruise in the united states.

American-flagged carriers like UnCruise Adventures offer Alaska, Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii cruises. American Cruise Lines counts the coastal Southeast, Alaska, Puget Sound, and New England among its itineraries. NLC America, a Norwegian Cruise Lines division, features the American-flagged  Pride of America sailing the Hawaiian islands. Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic cruise line possesses four American-flagged ships that cruise Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

Are there any cruises that stay in the United States?

Only American-flagged cruise lines can sail solely in the United States. Most popular cruise companies sailing multiple ships are foreign-flagged and must abide by laws requiring at least one foreign port stop. That’s why so many close-to-home cruises include Canada, the Caribbean, or Mexico. American-flagged cruise lines that can sail solely in U.S. waters include American Cruise Lines, UnCruise Adventures, and Lindblad Expeditions.

What is the most popular cruise line in America?

Families love Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean International for an abundance of amenities befitting multi-generations. Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Cruises are extremely popular for U.S. cruises , too.

How much does a cruise cost in the United States?

Prices vary widely depending upon the ship category. Contemporary lines are the most economical, premium fall in the middle, and luxury cruises are the priciest. You can find weeklong cruises that cost under $100 per person per day—talk about a deal.

The 7 best U.S. cruises 2023

Celebrity cruises: an inaugural voyage through the eastern caribbean.

The fourth ship in this line’s game-changing Edge series, the 3,260-passenger  Celebrity Ascent  makes its inaugural eight-day sail round trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023. This sunshine-blanketed itinerary promises four charming Caribbean ports including Philipsburg, St. Maarten, and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and three blissful sea days. You’ll want those onboard days to never end, with the ship providing so much outdoor space to soak up the balmy Caribbean sun and soft ocean breezes. A buzzy casino and 32 eateries, bars, and lounges are big-time lures, too. Shore excursions—chilling on powdery white sand beaches, snorkeling turquoise waters teeming with colorful coral and tropical fish, and sipping champagne on catamaran sunset sails—are mesmerizing.

Departs December 3, 2023; fares begin at $1,299 per person.

Cunard: Independence Day celebration on an iconic ship

What better way to cruise in the U.S. than to celebrate July 4 th in Boston, sailing 2,691-passenger Cunard flagship  Queen Mary 2 round trip New York? How fitting to walk the historic Freedom Trail and tour the Boston Tea Party ship on this holiday. The eight-day voyage also includes stops in Newport, Rhode Island (be sure to ogle those Gilded Age mansions), and Halifax, Canada, where passengers can stroll breathtaking public gardens and take an emotional moment to behold the single Titanic deck chair at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.  Queen Mary 2 , widely hailed for its transatlantic crossings, is a wonderful ship to call home. On board, elegance prevails, with a formal evening dress code reflecting Cunard’s sense of occasion. Afternoon tea, a humongous library, ballroom dancing, and a planetarium are among numerous onboard activities keeping passengers engaged. If in the budget, book a Princess Grill Suite; less costly than the Queens Grill, it’s still awash in extra amenities (such as an exclusive private restaurant) and especially attentive service.

Departs June 30, 2023; fares begin at $799 per person.

Holland America Line: 10-day voyage through the Mexican Riviera and Sea of Cortez

Revel in the Mexican Riviera’s splendor visiting ports like Loreto and Mazatlán when sailing round trip from San Diego on 2,650-passenger  Koningsdam . Dive, snorkel, jet ski, or kayak in pristine warm waters, gaze at UNESCO World Heritage Site cave paintings from pre-colonial indigenous peoples, or wander museums devoted to whales or archeology. Other port activities include ziplining, golfing, and sampling agave-based spirits. Onboard the ship, there are blues and rock-and-roll clubs that come alive at nightfall. Count on varied dining choices: New York-style pizzas, oysters on the half-shell, or juicy prime steaks, anyone?

Departs November 25, 2023; fares begin at $849 per person.

Norwegian Cruise Line: Explore Belize, Mexico, and Honduras

Some of the most popular ports for American cruises are in Florida. How simple to sail round trip from Miami for seven days on the 3,804-passenger  Norwegian Joy  and kick up the adrenaline in three Central American countries: Mexico, Honduras, and Belize. In Roatán, Honduras, embark on an eco-adventure, interacting with capuchin monkeys and sloths, and bouncing on an all-terrain buggy through an impossibly lush jungle. Costa Maya, Mexico, lures ocean-lovers with snorkeling in the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef in the world, teeming with marine life. Or, maybe your passion lies in exploring Tulum’s Mayan ruins. Parasail or zipline in Harvest Caye, Belize—Norwegian’s 75-acre resort-style island in southern Belize. Onboard the recently remodeled ship, indulge in 15 dining venues including specialty restaurants like Cagney’s Steakhouse and three main dining rooms, party at nightclubs, try driving a race car on a two-level track or seek Lady Luck at the casino, revel in Broadway and Vegas-style shows. Feeling brave? Swirl down a double-loop waterslide over the ship’s side. For an exclusive ultra-chill retreat post-activities, book accommodations in the Haven, with its own restaurant, pool, and butler service.

Multiple departures from March to April and October to December 2023; fares begin at $829 per person.

Royal Princess Leaving Southampton 9th June 2013

Royal Princess ' sailing along the California coast is one of the best U.S. cruises.

Princess Cruises: Seven-day classic California coast

Celebrate spring in California sailing round trip from San Francisco, with ports like Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Ensenada, Mexico. The cruise unfolds on 3,560-passenger  Royal Princess , a most pleasing ship with a tranquil adults-only Sanctuary, and some compelling family lures such as high-caliber Broadway-style entertainment, the piazza-like Atrium, glass-floored SeaWalk, and a light and water show. In Santa Barbara, a notable curated outing promises a delicious meal at a leading local restaurant and a visit to a family-owned farm and “ground to glass” winery. Live it up at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, or admire the stunning art collection and striking modern architecture at Getty Center museum. The San Diego Zoo is a must, as is desert ziplining in Baja—although driving an ATV through Guadalupe Valley’s wine country is pretty darn cool, too.

More Aleutian explorations lead to jaw-droppers like pristine glaciers, fossilized forests, hot springs, and waterfalls, and wildlife sightings such as bald eagles, orcas, and blue foxes.

Departs September 14, 2023; fares begin at $12,450 per person.

Viking: Canada and the Atlantic coastline

Spring and autumn are primetime for 16-day U.S. cruises between Fort Lauderdale and Toronto, Canada on 378-passenger expedition ship  Viking Octantis. This voyage features many inclusions, such as an enthusiastic expedition team, one complimentary landing or shore excursion in each port, and outings by kayak, rubberized small boats, and Special Operation Boats (12-seaters that leave the ship via a protected marina and can convert from open seating to enclosed cabin). As on other Viking ocean liners, 24-hour room service, king beds, spacious baths with heated bathroom floors, complimentary wine and beer with meals, and specialty restaurant dining also rank high among included amenities. Ashore, you’ll find a mix of fascinating cities (like Quebec City and New York City) and spectacular scenery. Bike about Toronto, hike Canada’s La Mauricie National Park, kayak or bird-watch in Charleston. And who knew there were more than 300 resident Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the inlets, creeks and marsh flats around Charleston? Chances are, sightings will enchant on a guided tour.

Miami Stay & Miami Cruise

Experience Art Deco Architecture, Enjoy Cool Latin Culture and Explore a City with Real Attitude. Miami has more than just hot weather and beaches to offer.

A booming metropolis and food lover’s paradise, art deco delight and sporting mecca, Latin enclave and millionaires’ playground…there seems to be an almost unlimited number of ways to describe this ever changing city. At one time, Miami had a rather pedestrian reputation as the retirement centre for Easterners, New Yorkers in particular, fleeing cold and inclement winters. But much of that image has changed as the city has modernised, expanded and been influenced by a large influx of Latin Americans.

Las Vegas Stay & Full-Board Cruise

Every hotel has a swimming pool and all casinos are air-conditioned. The impressive Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is kept at 20C, a very chilled place to visit. Indeed many guests, on arriving in Vegas, never go outside. Certainly one option for ‘beating the heat’.

Another famous site in San Francisco is Alcatraz. This former prison has featured in many Hollywood movies and is located on an island in the bay. Although it was closed in the 1960s, you can tour the museum with audio commentary for a truly haunting experience!

Barbados Stay & Cruise

A shot of a mountain at Port Guam in Guam

Guam (US Territory), Guam

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese military attacked the United States. While Pearl Harbor got all the press, that same day the Japanese bombed three other military bases. The idea was to remove any possibility that the United States could join the war in the Pacific. Bad idea. The target that got hit the worst was Guam: Not only was it bombed, it was invaded and occupied for nearly three years, which turned the island into a kind of slave camp for the indigenous Chamorro. Because of Guam's history—and because it's a U.S. territory, not some fascinating foreign country—a lot of people pass the island by, looking for something more exotic. Another possible reason for the tourism lag was that the island was actually sealed off from visitors for many years. Yet somehow modern Guam, the largest of the Mariana Islands (yep, the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, is right out there), has become a sampler plate of the Pacific. Fully a third of the island, including the best beaches, is off-limits to anyone but military personnel, and roads near the base will make you think you're driving through suburban Des Moines. Yet the southern part of the island is wild enough that a Japanese soldier continued to fight WWII here until the 1970s. In between these two extremes, you'll find a beautiful island with a unique mix of American, Pacific and Spanish cultures.

Closed-Loop Cruises: Everything You Need to Know

By Sue Bryant

Last updated: April 30th, 2024

Closed loop cruise with Celebrity Apex

  • Find a Cruise

Have you ever found yourself with a few days to spare and an overwhelming desire to escape to the balmy Caribbean, or on an Alaskan adventure, then realized that you don’t have a passport, or your passport has expired? As a U.S. citizen, you can take advantage of the convenience of what’s called a closed-loop cruise—with no passport required.

What is a closed-loop cruise?

Closed loop cruise - Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

A closed-loop cruise is a cruise that departs and ends in the same U.S. port; for example, Fort Lauderdale to Fort Lauderdale, or round-trip to Alaska from Seattle .

These cruises have to meet certain criteria to qualify. Every voyage on a ship that’s not U.S. flagged, departing from and returning to a U.S. port must, according to maritime law, visit one foreign port of call. This is why you’ll find Alaska cruises stopping in Vancouver, or Western Caribbean cruises calling in at Cancun.

To qualify as closed-loop cruises, the places these itineraries can include must be contiguous territories of the United States. That includes Mexico and Canada, because both share land borders with the U.S., and several of the islands of the Caribbean .

Do I need a passport for a closed-loop cruise?

Man eating key lime pie

Key West, Florida

In most cases, you don’t need a passport for a closed-loop cruise. This is one of the reasons why these itineraries are so popular. You can, of course, use your passport or passport card as an ID if you have one. But in the case of closed-loop cruises, U.S. citizens are allowed to enter or depart the country with proof of citizenship.

According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth.

The Enhanced Driver’s License allows you to re-enter the U.S. from Canada, Mexico , and the Caribbean and is valid at land and sea border crossings but not airports.

Different documentation is acceptable for minors under 16, including an original, notarized, or certified copy of their birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization. Voter registration cards and Social Security cards are not considered proof of citizenship.

Falmouth, Jamaica

There are different rules if you’re a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) of the U.S. While the U.S. government does not require you to have a passport, destinations on the itinerary may have different rules, so it’s always advisable to check.

If you are an LPR, you’ll need your I-551, or Green Card, to re-enter the U.S. And if you’re not a U.S. citizen or a U.S. LPR, you’ll need a passport regardless of whether you’re on a closed-loop cruise or not.

If you do choose to take advantage of this opportunity to travel without a passport, there are a couple of warnings to bear in mind. Say, for example, something goes wrong and you have to return to the U.S. by air. In this case, you’d need a passport to board a flight.

Also, if you miss the ship in one of the ports, you’ll have to make your own way home or to catch up with the cruise, which could be difficult without a passport. If you book an excursion through Celebrity Cruises, that won’t happen, since the ship is guaranteed to wait for you.

What are some of the best closed-loop cruise itineraries?

Fort lauderdale to perfect day at cococay.

Closed loop cruise - CocoCay

CocoCay, Bahamas

Sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale to the sunny Bahamas on a getaway that includes the award-winning private island of CocoCay. Depending on the itinerary, you’ll also have time in either Nassau, Bimini, or Key West.

Historic Nassau combines fascinating colonial-era architecture, like the limestone-carved Queen’s Staircase and the candy-pink Parliament Building, with dreamy beaches and a thriving culinary scene.

Join a rum tasting at John Watling’s Distillery, shop for locally made trinkets in the Straw Market, and relax on the long, sandy sweep of Cable Beach.

View of the shipwreck of S.S. Sapona, Bimini

S.S. Sapona shipwreck in Bimini, Bahamas

Tiny Bimini is surrounded by the clearest seas imaginable. Join a tour to swim among reef sharks, or go snorkeling over the wreck of the S.S. Sapona, now colonized by marine life and thriving as a colorful reef.

CocoCay is for many the highlight of a cruise to the Bahamas. Fly down Devil’s Peak, the tallest waterslide in North America, or kick back on the adults-only Hideaway Beach, where a DJ spins tunes all day and the cocktails flow.

Elevate your experience with a private overwater cabana with a slide to propel you straight into the crystal-clear water.

Boston to Maine & Canada

Beautiful landscape of Fort Williams Park, Maine

Fort Williams Park, Maine

Sail round-trip from Boston in the late summer and early fall, just as the trees are beginning to take on their brilliant autumn colors.

You’ll cruise the coast of Maine, calling at pretty Rockland, its rugged coast inviting exploration on foot or on two wheels. As this is the self-styled “lobster capital of the world”, you don’t want to miss the chance to enjoy a lobster roll here.

Across the border in Canada , you’ll visit Halifax, famed for its maritime history and iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, as well as Sydney on rugged Cape Breton Island.

Old town of Québec City, Canada

Québec City, Canada

Our cruises to Maine and Canada also spend a night in beautiful Québec City on the St. Lawrence River. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the cobblestone streets and restaurants of the Old Town, established 400 years ago.

Don’t miss the outstanding Musée de la Civilisation and the famous Château Frontenac. While you’re here, remember to try poutine, the local specialty, which is French fries drenched in gravy and cheese curds.

Seattle to Alaska, the Inside Passage, and Dawes Glacier

Closed loop cruise - Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska

Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska

Spend seven nights exploring the wild beauty of Alaska on the innovative Celebrity Edge. It’s the perfect ship for such dazzling scenery, with its abundance of outside space and the thrilling Magic Carpet, offering uninterrupted views of Alaska’s forested shores and jagged mountains.

You’ll visit pretty Ketchikan, from where you could join a bear-spotting tour, try kayaking, join an expedition to fish for king crab, or just explore the colorful town.

Next, there’s a full day slowly cruising the 30-mile Endicott Arm Fjord, past tumbling waterfalls and chunks of floating ice that have broken off the magnificent Dawes Glacier, a 600-foot tall wall of blue-white ice. The spectacle of this vast river of ice meeting the sea is a highlight of the day.

Mendenhall Lake with trail leading to the glacier

Mendenhall Lake in Juneau, Alaska

You’ll also visit Juneau , the perfect spot for whale-watching, hiking, and thrilling flightseeing trips over snow-covered mountains. In Skagway, you’ll have the chance to ride the spectacular White Pass and Yukon Route railroad, heading high over rugged passes, following the trail of hardy prospectors from the Gold Rush days.

As the ship heads back to Seattle, there’s a day on board to relax as the ship threads its way through the narrow channels of the Inside Passage , between forested islands and rock-strewn beaches, with great opportunities for spotting whales and bears from your vantage point on deck.

There’s also a call at historic Victoria on Canada’s Vancouver Island, where you can experience a pleasing blend of elegant, British colonial architecture, cool shops, and craft breweries before you return to Seattle.

Fort Lauderdale to the Eastern Caribbean

Colorful buildings in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

You’ll find a wide choice of itineraries and ships sailing from Fort Lauderdale to the islands of the Eastern Caribbean on itineraries ranging from seven to 10 nights.

Islands you could visit include pretty St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands , fringed by exquisite beaches. Across the water is Tortola, the epicenter of the British Virgin Islands, famed as a paradise for sailing and watersports.

Turquoise waters of Grand Case, St. Maarten

Grand Case, St. Maarten

St. Maarten , shared by France and The Netherlands, gives you a taste of two cultures, although the beaches are exceptional whichever side of the island you favor. Head to pretty Grand Case for fine French-Caribbean dining, or browse the duty-free shops of Philipsburg on the Dutch side.

At Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, the culture bears Spanish influences in the language and architecture. Venture into the island’s interior to explore the rainforest in a 4×4, or to visit a coffee plantation to learn how coffee is produced.

Closed loop cruise - Barbados

Bridgetown is decidedly British in influence, with fine Georgian architecture and one of the Caribbean’s most famous cricket grounds, The Oval. In Barbados , go sailing, snorkeling, or even surfing on the island’s wilder Atlantic coast, or head to the Barbados Wildlife Reserve to observe green monkeys.

You’ll find fascinating history on St. Kitts, too, if you can tear yourself away from its gorgeous beaches. One of the best day trips here is a ride on the vintage St. Kitts Scenic Railway, which snakes around the coast and acrossthe lush countryside, following the route once used to transport sugar cane to Basseterre, the capital.

White sands of a beach in Antigua

Beach in Antigua

Everywhere in the Caribbean has spectacular beaches, but perhaps nowhere more so than Antigua , which boasts 365, so you’ll have plenty of choice. Dickenson Bay is one of the liveliest, with soft golden sand, while dreamy Ffryes Beach is the archetypal Caribbean paradise, with sugary sand and coconut palms.

If your itinerary includes St. Lucia , meanwhile, one of the best ways to admire the mountainous coastline, dominated by the twin peaks of the Pitons, is by boat. Join a sailing trip from Rodney Bay and take in spectacular views, the breeze in your face and an iced rum punch in hand.

Cape Liberty to Bermuda

Couple in Jobson’s Cove Beach, Bermuda

Jobson’s Cove Beach, Bermuda

Charge your champagne glass and raise a toast to Lady Liberty on this seven-night voyage from Cape Liberty, New Jersey to chic Bermuda and back.

As your ship, Celebrity Eclipse or Celebrity Silhouette edges out of port, you’ll have magnificent views of the Manhattan skyline as you sail right past the Statue of Liberty and then out under the iconic Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, setting a course southeast to balmy Bermuda .

Here, on this enchanted island where the sand is pink and the policemen wear knee-length shorts, you’ll have two and a half days to explore, which means two overnight stays .

Couple hiking the Railway Trail, Bermuda

Railway Trail, Bermuda

There’s plenty to do, from snorkeling to golf, exploring the shops and galleries in Hamilton, the pastel-hued capital, and visiting the island’s forts. Hike the historic Railway Trail, consisting of 18 miles of scenic pathway following the course of an old railroad line.

Set sail on a catamaran trip at sunset, or join a pub crawl of Hamilton’s bars after dark. One of the most unique things to do in Bermuda is to sample a Dark ‘n’ Stormy, the powerful local specialty made of dark rum with ginger beer and a slice of lime.

Fort Lauderdale to Southern Caribbean

Colorful street of Old San Juan

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

Sail to the sun-drenched Southern Caribbean on a round-trip cruise from Fort Lauderdale of 8, 10, or 11 nights. You’ll sail either on Celebrity Eclipse, perfect for this setting with its lush Lawn Club, or the new Celebrity Ascent, with magnificent outdoor spaces in which to soak up the sunshine.

Ports of call, depending on your itinerary, include vibrant Puerto Rico, where an afternoon and evening in port mean you’ll see two faces of charismatic San Juan .

Explore the chunky fortress, Castillo San Felipe del Morro, and the brightly colored streets of Old San Juan, or visit the Bacardi distillery to learn about and sample the famous rum.

Couple looking at the lush scenery of Mount Liamuiga

Mount Liamuiga, St. Kitts

You’ll find plenty of military history at St. Kitts , like the rugged Brimstone Hill Fortress, a massive compound built by the British in 1690. This tiny island packs a real punch, with an enormous variety of things to do.

Some of the best things to do in St. Kitts include trundling through the sugarcane fields on a scenic train journey, or hiking Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano at the island’s center.

Learn how to make your own gourmet truffles at a chocolate workshop. Visit neighboring Nevis to see the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the U.S.

In St. Thomas , you’ll find it impossible to resist exploring the crystal-clear water via snorkeling, kayaking, or sailboat. For an afternoon basking on the gorgeous Honeymoon Beach, the lush, low-key island of St. John is an easy hop across the water.

Cane Garden beach in Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Some itineraries include Tortola in the British Virgin Islands . Take a boat trip to sleepy Virgin Gorda and splash around at The Baths, where giant tumbled boulders conceal shady caves and shallow lagoons.

In Barbados, bask on the beautiful beaches of the Platinum Coast, where you can swim among wild sea turtles. Or explore Bridgetown, which is packed with high-end shops and art galleries.

Antigua, too, is famed for its beaches, like the wide sweep of Dickenson Bay. For history buffs, visit Nelson’s Dockyard, built in the early 18th century and beautifully preserved.

Beautiful landscape of St. Lucia

If your cruise takes you to St. Lucia, prepare to be awed by the twin peaks of the Pitons, ancient volcanic plugs draped in lush rainforest. From Soufriere, you can explore bubbling sulfur springs and wallow in a natural mud pool with healing properties.

Adventure lovers should pick an itinerary that includes Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. Here, you can swim in natural rock pools at the 27 Waterfalls, or fly over the forest on a zipline. For a more serene activity, join a kayaking trip through a manatee reserve, looking out for these gentle mammals.

Alaskan cruises stand out from other cruises because many of the destinations or ports they visit are only reachable by boat or by a long train or car journey. These cruises typically depart from Vancouver, Seattle, or Anchorage and provide a unique experience of sailing past glaciers, anchoring in National Parks, and docking in small towns offering various activities to explore.

The choice of cruise route will depend on what you and your family or friends want to see. Smaller cruise ships can visit the internal passages and national parks, where you can witness the stunning beauty of natural wonders such as the Hubbard Glacier.

Popular routes include Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Sitka and Whittier stops.

Russian military exercises in the Caribbean: Here's what to expect

By Alex Sundby

Updated on: June 12, 2024 / 8:15 PM EDT / CBS News

Three Russian ships and a nuclear-powered submarine arrived in Cuban waters Wednesday ahead of military exercises  in the Caribbean. While the exercises aren't considered a threat to the U.S., American ships were deployed to shadow the Russians, U.S. officials told CBS News.

The Russian warships  were seen arriving in Havana's harbor on Wednesday morning and were expected to stay in Cuba until Monday. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Air Force One on Wednesday the U.S. was closely monitoring the Russian ships.

"We have seen this kind of thing before and we expect to see this kind of thing again," Sullivan said.

The U.S. intelligence community has assessed that the submarine is nuclear powered but it isn't carrying nuclear weapons, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reported. White House national security spokesman John Kirby told CBS News senior White House and political correspondent Ed O'Keefe last week that there was no indication nuclear weapons would be "at play" during the vessels' time in the Caribbean.

What Russian ships are in Cuba?

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the three Russian ships are a frigate, a fleet oil tanker and a salvage tug. The three ships and the submarine headed across the Atlantic separately, Martin reported.

The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov, part of the Russian naval detachment visiting Cuba, arrives at Havana's harbor, June 12, 2024.

Russia has used the frigate, the Admiral Gorshkov, to test its Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles , according to the Reuters news agency.

Two American destroyers and two ships that tow sonar equipment behind them were shadowing the submarine, Martin reported. Another destroyer and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter were shadowing the three Russian ships. The U.S. Navy also used little sailboats fitted with cameras, known as sail drones, to shadow the Russian ships as they got close to Cuba.

The Admiral Gorshkov and the submarine carried out drills in the Atlantic that simulated a missile strike on enemy ships, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov takes part in an exercise on the use of high-precision weapons in the Atlantic Ocean, in this still image from video released June 11, 2024.

While the Russian ships are in Cuba, the U.S. Navy ships shadowing them are expected to wait for the Russians and continue shadowing them when they leave port, Martin reported.

The ships' arrival in Havana — which the Cuban Foreign Ministry said was expected to include the fanfare of one Russian ship firing 21 salvos in a salute to Cuba — comes ahead of Russia carrying out air and naval exercises in the Caribbean in the coming weeks, Martin reported.

The exercises, which will include long-range bombers, will be the first simultaneous air and naval maneuvers Russia has carried out in the Caribbean since 2019, Martin reported. The exercises will be conducted over the summer, culminating in a worldwide naval exercise in the fall.

"Clearly this is them signaling their displeasure about what we're doing for Ukraine ," Kirby told O'Keefe. "So we're going to watch it, we're going to monitor it, it's not unexpected. … But we don't anticipate, we don't expect that there'll be any imminent threat or any threat at all, quite frankly, to American national security in the region, in the Caribbean region, or anywhere else."

The Russian ships are expected to head to Venezuela after Cuba, but it's unclear what the submarine will do, Martin reported.

The Russian nuclear-powered submarine Kazan and the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, part of the Russian naval detachment visiting Cuba, arrive at Havana's harbor, June 12, 2024.

What was the Cuban missile crisis?

The events in the Caribbean are different from the Cuban missile crisis that happened over 60 years ago. The 1962 crisis unfolded after the U.S. discovered launch sites in Cuba for Soviet ballistic nuclear missiles.

Over the course of 13 days, the crisis brought the Soviet Union and the U.S. dangerously close to nuclear war. A potential conflict was averted when the Kennedy administration reached a deal with the Kremlin for the missiles to be removed from Cuba.

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

Putin's nuclear submarine detected off UK coast sparking emergency meeting

One of Vladimir Putin ’s nuclear submarines has been spotted off the coast of Scotland , it has been reported.

Prime minister Rishi Sunak and and defence secretary  Grant Shapps  were told at a ‘secret’ briefing that a Russian Yasen-class submarine was detected earlier in June.

An RAF surveillance plane trailed its movements along the west coast of Ireland to Scotland.

It is understood that the 13,800-tonne submarine Kazan crossed near to Britain’s nuclear naval base in Faslane without actually crossing territorial waters.

A senior government source cited by the Express said about the sighting on June 5: ‘The PM was informed – this is standard practice.

‘The Cabinet is also informed and if needed the defence secretary can give his direction.

‘I understand the submarine is a Yasen class – capable of launching multiple cruise missiles.

‘The sighting of this submarine will be a significant concern: is it trying to collate chatter to gauge the mood of the public during the election, or is its presence part of a wider information operation?’

Russia’s Kazan submarine has since arrived in Havana, Cuba, for a five-day visit on Friday.

Western leaders have downplayed the unusual deployment, some 100 miles from US territory.

It comes after the US and Germany lifted an embargo for Ukraine to deploy US-supplied weapons on Russia’s territory.

Ukraine war latest: Putin makes 'absurd attempt to seduce West'; leaders call for Olympics truce

Analysts have branded Vladimir Putin's proposals for peace negotiations "absurd" and "hollow", as Volodymyr Zelenskyy hosts a two-day peace summit with world leaders - excluding Russia. Meanwhile, the Group of Seven have unanimously backed a global conflict truce during the Olympic Games.

That's all for our live coverage today, but we'll be back with more live updates and analysis soon.

If you're just checking in, here is a recap of the key moments that occurred over the last 24 hours.

  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy kicked off a peace summit in Switzerland that excluded Russia;
  • Joe Biden skipped the event - sending vice president Kamala Harris instead - and China declined an invitation;
  • White House national security adviser branded Russia's latest so-called peace proposal a "completely absurd vision", after Vladimir Putin called for Ukraine to give up almost 20% of its land;
  • The head of the EU Commission said freezing the conflict as it stands was "a recipe for future wars of aggression";
  • But Saudi Arabia - touted as the potential host of a follow-up summit - said peace talks must involve "difficult compromise";
  • Meanwhile, Russia blamed Ukraine for attacks that killed six people in Belgorod last night, while Ukraine said Russia killed three people with cluster munitions in a Ukrainian village today;
  • The G7 unanimously backed a French proposal to request a global truce during the Olympic Games, the Italian prime minister said.

A draft statement at the Swiss peace summit recognises Russia's war in Ukraine continues to cause large-scale human suffering and destruction, Reuters reports.

"We reaffirm out commitment to refraining from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state... including Ukraine," reads the statement.

"Any threat or use of nuclear weapons in the context of the ongoing war against Ukraine is inadmissible."

The communique continues: "Ukrainian nuclear power plants and installations... must operate safely and securely under full sovereign control of Ukraine."

It calls for prisoners of war to be released, and all deported and unlawfully displaced Ukrainian children or unlawfully detained Ukrainian civilians to be returned to Ukraine.

The statement also pushes for "free, full and safe" commercial travel via sea ports in the Black Sea and Azov Sea.

"We underscore our commitment to upholding international law, including the UN charter."

The first batch of Russian and Belarusian athletes have been cleared to compete at next month's Paris Olympics, with a total of 25 making the cut.

Another 16 failed an International Olympic Committee vetting process over the war in Ukraine, the IOC said, the spaces for which will be distributed to other countries.

Russian and Belarusian athletes are allowed to qualify as neutrals so long as they have not actively supported the war in Ukraine and have not been contracted to any military or security agency.

The vetting process means the countries will have sportspeople competing in some events, like road cycling and trampolining, but in others neither country has qualified, such as taekwondo.

In this round of vetting, Russia cleared 14 athletes for 24 allocated spots, while 11 Belarusian athletes passed the process for 17 spots.

Once all applicants are vetted, the IOC said it expects to see about 36 Russian and 22 Belarusian athletes competing as neutrals, out of 54 and 28 spots respectively.

Russia has blamed Ukraine for attacks that killed six people in Belgorod last night.

Russia's emergencies ministry said four bodies were pulled from the rubble of a five-story apartment building in the town of Shebekino.

Pictures showed a crane clearing debris and a building's facade shattered, with one stairwell collapsed.

Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said a Ukrainian drone struck a car in a village near Shebekino, killing the driver.

He also said a woman was killed in her home when it was struck by rocket fire in the village of Oktyabrsky, further west.

There was no immediate comment from Kyiv.

Russia launched a fresh incursion across the border from Belgorod in Kharkiv last month, opening up a second front in the war.

While world leaders gather to discuss peace in Switzerland,  troops continue to fight on the frontlines in Ukraine.

Pictures show apartment buildings reduced to rubble in residential areas turned to ghost-towns to the east.

In Toretsk, Donetsk region, the frames of windows are all that is left of one block, hanging between two others.

Meanwhile, in Chasiv Yar, Ukrainian soldiers were photographed firing 120mm mortar towards Russian positions.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister says any peace talks will involve "difficult compromise".

The country is viewed as one of the leading candidates to host what is being mooted as a follow-up conference to this weekend's gathering of dozens of world leaders in Switzerland.

Speaking at the Swiss peace summit, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said any credible negotiations will need Russia's participation.

"We believe it is important that the international community encourage any step towards serious negotiations which will require difficult compromise as part of a road map that leads to peace."

World leaders are speaking throughout the day in Switzerland at a peace summit called by Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

We're bringing you the key moments from the talks, and this update includes comments on nuclear safety, war crimes and Vladimir Putin's "absurd vision".

Emmanuel Macron

The French leader says one of the key priorities of the talks must be about securing nuclear safety around the Zaporizhizhia power plant.

Allies must also "not to accept any complacency vis-a-vis the attacks targeting civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine. These are war crimes", he said.

Russia has denied all allegations of war crimes.

"What is at stake is our international rules and the possibility to have peace everywhere. Because in launching this war, Russia decided first to be an imperialist regime," said Mr Macron.

"This summit is a milestone to reiterate our attachment to the core principles of our international laws."

Jake Sullivan

The White House national security adviser branded Russia's latest peace proposal a "completely absurd vision."

It would only lead to further domination of the country, he said.

China's absence from the peace summit was probably a result of entreaties from Russia not to attend, Mr Sullivan added.

Finnish president

Finland's president Alexander Stubb called for follow-up talks as soon as possible because "peace is... always a process".

"We have 1,300 kilometres of border with Russia... Russia invaded Finland in World War Two, we lost 10% of our territory, including the land where my grandparents were born and where my father was born."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Moscow was not invited to the Swiss summit because the Kremlin is not interested in peace.

European commission President Ursula von der Leyen told world leaders accepting Russian troops on Ukrainian land was a "recipe for future wars of aggression".

And Rishi Sunak was asked whether the West has been too scared of Vladimir Putin to help Ukraine defeat him.

Here are the details...

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

"There is no need to reinvent the wheel when the UN charter already defines the foundations of peace and normal co-existence of peoples," he told leaders gathered near Lucerne.

"There is no Russia here - why? Because if Russia was interested in peace, there would be no war.

"We must decide together what a just peace means for the world and how it can be achieved in a truly lasting way."

Ursula von der Leyen

"Freezing the conflict today, with foreign troops occupying Ukrainian land, is not the answer.

"It is a recipe for future wars of aggression.

"Instead we need to support a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace for Ukraine. One that restores Ukraine's sovereignty and its territorial integrity."

Rishi Sunak

Asked if the West has been too scared of Vladimir Putin to help Ukraine defeat him, he said the UK was " not going anywhere" and Kyiv's allies are "with Ukraine for as long as it takes".

"Crucially at the G7 summit over the past few days we reached a landmark agreement to make sure it's Russia who pays for more military support and economic reconstruction of Ukraine using trapped and seized Russian assets".

Vladimir Putin's purported interest in peace negotiations is a hollow attempt to "seduce" the West, war analysts say.

His "absurd ultimatums" are part of a campaign to sabotage the Swiss peace conference and mislead Kyiv's allies to permit the violation of Ukrainian sovereignty, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The Russian leader's so-called peace plan included Ukraine surrendering almost 20% of its territory and abandoning its aspirations to join NATO, and the West lifting all sanctions and recognising part of Ukraine as Russian.

"The Kremlin is not interested in good faith negotiations with Ukraine and only feigns its interest in negotiations as part of a wider informational effort intended to convince the West to pre-emptively make concessions that violate Ukraine's sovereignty," said the ISW.

Mr Putin's demands would "irrevocably damage the principle of state sovereignty and the inviolability of international borders".

The ISW called Mr Putin's promise to respect a ceasefire "particularly hollow following months of Russian war crimes against Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war".

Russia denies allegations of committing war crimes.

The International Criminal Court has issued a warrant for Mr Putin's arrest.

"Putin's demands continue to reflect his long-demanded ultimatums that are based on presuppositions that deny the existence of an independent and sovereign Ukraine and that seek to seduce the West to pre-emptively compromise on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," said the ISW.

Demonstrators have travelled hundreds of miles to plead their case as world leaders arrive in Switzerland.

Some 250 people, many of them relatives of Ukrainian soldiers, waved banners and shouted slogans in Lucerne to draw attention to the fate of troops taken prisoner by Russia.

Many do not know if their loved ones have been killed or taken.

"I must do everything in my power to get my husband back," said Svitlana Bilous, 34, from Kharkiv.

"I'm clinging to the idea that my husband is still alive... that's what keeps me going. If I could send him a message, it would be simply that I love him."

Anatoliy went missing in April last year and Svitlana has only heard he is alive but has had no direct contact with him.

"We want specific actions regarding the return of prisoners of war, admission of the International Committee of the Red Cross to all places of detention," she said.

The families want the world powers in attendance at Volodymyr Zelenskyy's peace summit to find ways to press Moscow to hand over information, improve the conditions of any captives and send them home.

Approximately 8,000 people - civilians and soldiers - are in Russian hands, Ukrainian officials said in February.

"All of us have the same dream," said one women at the demonstration.

"We want our relatives to be found and returned from captivity."

Ukraine appears to have used US weapons to take out targets on Russian soil, kicking off a new stage in the war

  • Ukraine appears to have struck a prized air-defense system on Russian soil using a US-supplied HIMARS.
  • The attack came amid a flurry of reports suggesting a major Ukrainian attack over the weekend.
  • It also came hours after Biden approved the limited use of US-supplied weapons on targets in Russia.

Insider Today

Ukraine appears to have used US-supplied weapons on Russian soil in a wave of reported attacks — signaling that a new phase of the war may well be underway.

Russian media outlets said on Monday that Ukraine fired M42 missiles from M270 and HIMARS rocket launchers — all of which are US-made — over the border into Russia, the Kyiv Post reported .

The paper added that Russian officials said that cross-border attacks took place, but gave no details as to what weapons were used.

If confirmed, the strikes would represent the first known instance in this war of US-supplied weapons being used on Russian territory — a red line that President Joe Biden only pulled back on late last week.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged on Sunday that his forces had fired HIMARS from the northern Kharkiv region, the Kyiv Post reported.

On Monday, Ukrainian government minister Iryna Vereshchuk shared an image of burning military equipment on Facebook, saying that a prized Russian S-300 air defense system had been struck, CNN reported .

She noted that it took place in the "first days after permission to use Western weapons on enemy territory," without giving further details, per CNN.

The image appeared to have been taken from the pro-Russian Telegram account Dosye Shpiona , which said that a HIMARS had been used.

BI was unable to find Vereshchuk's post on either her Facebook or Telegram accounts, suggesting it has since been deleted.

But the Institute for the Study of War, citing prominent pro-Russian military bloggers, also concluded that an S300 or S400 system had been struck in Russia's Belgorod region, some 60 miles from the border, on either June 1 or June 2, saying it was "likely" hit by a HIMARS.

The target was well within HIMARS range but exceeded the range of the systems Ukraine usually uses to strike over the border, the think tank said.

The Kyiv Post cited a flurry of other Russian media reports — both unofficial and state-sanctioned — detailing dozens of strikes aimed at artillery systems, troop concentrations, and a bridge as part of the attack.

The reports came shortly after Biden said that Ukraine could fire HIMARS against targets on Russian soil, in limited circumstances .

The change in policy came after several of Ukraine's Western allies — including the UK and France — gave similar go-aheads.

The Biden administration's decision came after months of appeals from Ukrainian officials.

One Ukrainian soldier complained of having to watch helplessly as Russia built up its forces over the border ahead of a renewed offensive in the Kharkiv region, held back by the US restrictions on the use of its weapons.

Depriving Russia of these "sanctuary zones" could be of "huge" assistance to Ukraine, Keir Giles, a senior consulting fellow at Chatham House's Russia and Eurasia Programme, told Business Insider's Thibault Spirlet last week.

But the decision was long past due, he said.

And faced with other problems — including recruitment and ammunition shortages — the US decision is "clearly not a silver bullet to win the war," Alexander Libman, a professor of Russian and East European politics at the Free University of Berlin, told BI.

Despite his imposter syndrome, Johnny Depp beat out some of the biggest names in film (and music) for his breakout role.

The Academy Award nominee revealed he beat out the likes of Tom Hanks , Tom Cruise and even Michael Jackson for his eponymous role in Tim Burton ‘s 1990 gothic fantasy Edward Scissorhands .

The actor said Burton and Caroline Thompson’s script “passed through everything, anything, solid and went to the very core of whatever I am. The writing was beautiful. The character was beautiful. What I suppose [attracted] me emotionally was that Edward was me. It’s exactly what I should be doing.”

Coming off his 1987-1990 stint on 21 Jump Street , Depp felt “pigeonholed” as a teen idol. He “had to fight” the label, noting that his starring role in John Waters’ 1990 cult classic Cry-Baby “was the first solid step in the direction I wanted to go.”

But given Burton’s rising star following Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985) and Beetlejuice (1988), as well as Hollywood’s interest in the project, Depp thought, “He’s never going to cast me when everyone in Hollywood is after the part.”

“Tim’s really juggling because he’s getting hit by his agent, the studio, everybody. So I called my agent after reading the script and said, ‘Please cancel the meeting, I’m not going,'” recalled Depp. “She said, ‘Are you f***ing nuts?'”

After Depp “finally gave in” and met Burton, he got the part, which ultimately earned him his first Golden Globe nomination.

Depp has since worked with Burton on Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Dark Shadows (2012).

The untitled Tim Burton docuseries premieres Monday, June 10 at the Tribeca Film Festival.
