Bergen Cruise Port Guide: One Day, Three Ways

Bergen awaits with a rugged backdrop, colourful architecture, cobbled alleyways and a long history of maritime trading. Pack a lot into your day with this Bergen cruise port guide. This is a 3-part series on my Norwegian fjords cruise adventure. Check out the other two posts in the series:  Cruising the Norwegian Fjords  and  New to Cruising Tips .

WoW Contents At A Glance

NEVER MISS OUT AGAIN

Not many cruise ships visiting the Norwegian fjords skip Bergen, Norway’s second city known as the “gateway to the fjords”. Surrounded by seven mountains, Bergen is an enchanting mix of culture and urban life in harmony with nature.

cruise terminal in bergen norway

Uncover the delights of two contrasting ports on a cruise through the Norwegian fjords. CLICK HERE to read more.

Travellers to this part of Norway potentially have two images in their minds. The first is that of a notoriously rainy city – Bergen is after all a place that experiences 275 average days of rain per year. A good-natured local may tell you, though, that there’s no bad weather; there’s only bad clothing. So, whatever you do, pack practical clothing for your time in Bergen. The second is that of the iconic Bryggen Wharf area with its UNESCO-listed World Heritage cluster of colourful wooden merchants’ buildings.

Bergen Cruise Port Guide

Here are three unmissable highlights for one day in Bergen. Fortunately, all are within easy walking distance of the main cruise port.

1. Enjoy views of Bergen from Mount Fl ø yen

Head to the Fløibanen funicular station which is about 12 minutes’ walk from the main cruise terminal. On the way, allow a little bit of time to admire Bryggen, but do not be distracted yet. The goal is to get to the station before long queues build up. Take the funicular train to the summit of Mount Fløyen, one of the seven mountains which surround Bergen, for a 360-degree introduction. Ascending some 320m above sea level in up to eight minutes, the views of the city, harbour, ocean and fjords are spectacular. On days with rain or fog, views may be limited – but a moody overcast adds an extra layer of drama to the city, wouldn’t you agree?

cruise terminal in bergen norway

At the top, there are a number of walking routes, as well as a small shop and rest points available. Wander the nearby forest for a mischievous encounter with trolls carved into the many trees. Get the return ride back or skip it altogether and walk down the narrow mountain lane at your own pace.

WoW Tip: Book your tickets online at www.floyen.no or via the Fløibanen app to save yourself some time on the day.

2. Soak in the atmosphere at Bryggen

Back in the city, absorb the bustle of Bryggen on a stroll through intriguing alleyways filled with independent stores, restaurants and cosy coffee shops. Bergen’s strong shipping and trading tradition is palpable in Bryggen wharf, the harbour-side area where the city’s first buildings were built.

cruise terminal in bergen norway

The wharf was one of the overseas offices of the Hanseatic League, a group which dominated maritime trade in Northern and Central Europe between the 14th and 17th centuries. The colourful wooden structures are possibly Norway’s most photographed buildings. Today, the historic harbour is a melting pot of activities for locals and tourists alike.

Flavour stop: Duck into Baker Brun in Bryggen for a sweet treat (or an escape from the rain, who knows?).

3. Have a meal at the Fish Market

Surely it’s time for a meal now after all your exertions. Head to Bergen’s atmospheric Fish Market, situated next to the tourist office, for a sensory delight of sights, sounds and smells in abundance. Browse stalls with various fishes displayed on beds of ice. Marvel at large seawater tanks containing live lobster, king crab and many other seafood species. Sample a traditional Norwegian fish cake or perhaps sit down to a hearty pan-to-plate meal freshly prepared for you. Most stalls have no paper menus, choosing instead to plate the various meal options in what one stall owner jocularly called “3D menus”. At least it shows you exactly what you are getting for your money.

WoW Tip: Speaking of money, Norway is pricier than your average European city, and a meal at the fish market can be more eye-watering than expected. So, be prepared.

Cruises from/to Bergen, Norway

Bergen, norway cruise port.

Located in the western part of Norway, Bergen is a city filled with life. The city itself is surrounded by mountains, fjords and glaciers. Exploring these towering natural structures is the most popular of attractions in the city. However, historically Bergen has held a special place in Norway’s history as the first capital and a trading post for Hanseatic merchants. The remnants and history of these periods are preserved and represented in museums throughout the city.Featured below are a few of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Bergen, Norway:

  • Visit the Bergenhus Fortress which is comprised of several buildings, the oldest of which were built in the 13 th century.
  • Take a funicular ride up Mount Floyen, the city’s most central peak, for an incredible birds-eye view of the city and its fjords.
  • Head to Bryggen, a town with colorful wooden houses that are meant to be replicas of what this area looked like during medieval times up until 1750.
  • Experience the city’s fjords, which are narrow inlets of water between cliffs that were formed by glacial erosion.

A view of the houses along Port Bergen in Norway

Bergen, Norway

Beautiful Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city, is one of the most popular ports of call on a cruise up the fjords. Step off the ship into the medieval Bryggen wharf area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, where small boats line the harbor and wooden gabled buildings stand proud along the waterfront. Bergen’s rich maritime tradition goes back nearly 1,000 years, including the years the town played an important part in the Hanseatic League, the trading empire that dominated maritime commerce in the region between the 14th and 18th centuries. The city is one of Europe’s oldest settlements, and its cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways lead to emerald-green parks, medieval cathedrals and stone fortresses that kept enemies at bay centuries ago. It's also eminently walkable, with historic buildings and excellent markets selling everything from fish and produce to trinkets and souvenirs.

Surrounded by mountains and thick forest, and sitting halfway between Geiranger to the north and Stavanger to the south, Bergen offers plenty to do outside the city too. Whether you sign up for a guided excursion or venture out on your own, you’ll be sure to fall in love with Bergen.

Where does Viking dock in Bergen?

I have a Northern Lights cruise booked for next year (if it goes) and was wondering where Viking ships tend to dock?  I've been in Bergen on other cruise lines - once docking about a mile or so from city center (large ship) and once right at the end of the old town harbor (small ship).  Just wondering before I look into booking a room for overnight since I want to stay an extra day after disembarking.

Right at the Bryggen waterfront.  Its a 5 minute walk from the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel or Thon Hotel Orion.  The Thon is the closest and we chose to stay there on our own pre cruise because it was quieter then the Radisson Blu where Viking puts up guests.  The location is fantastic.

USUALLY,  Viking docks here:

image.png.d96e0d7974122eb6b71aaa8ca4f2e677.png

But it has been known to dock at other places.

Here is a link to the Port of Bergen cruise call schedule: https://bergenhavn.no/en/cruise-en/call-schedules-cruise/

Two hotels in suitcase dragging distance of the dock are a Thon Hotel and a Radisson. Unfettered it takes about 15 minutes to walk from the ship to the Hanseatic Museum. Also, the Airport Flybussen has a stop on the Bryggen, not far from either hotel, from what I have been able to figure out on a map. Was hoping to see for myself this past June, but had a small change of plans and never got to Bergen.

Excellent Advice!

If the ship docks in its normal location, as per the comments above, another hotel choice to consider is the Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz.  It's just a little farther away from the dock than the Radisson or the Thon Orion, but still within easy walking distance, even dragging suitcases.  We stayed there before departing on our "In the Wake of the Vikings" transatlantic in September 2018, self-booked, because we got an excellent price on the room, including dinner the night before and breakfast the morning of check-out.

Flybussen last stop was at the Raddison from the airport.  You can use a card for payment.

Okay, there is an excuse for staying at the Radisson. Not only a short walk to the bus, but if your flight is later in the day, you can store your luggage at the hotel while you wander about a bit.

Thanks, everyone.  Exactly what I needed to know!

BUT, if you aren't heading to the airport but are planning on taking the train to Oslo (the ride is said to be magnificent) then maybe you want a hotel that is closer to the train station. If, you have never been to Norway, why rush to leave?

I do not see Viking Venus on the schedule for arrival on 13/14 February 2021 for our Northern Lights cruise (starting on 2 Feb at Tilbury). Rather, it looks like that spot is being held by Viking Star. Is that possibly SOP until a ship actually enters service?

Or am I just being nervous?

[Update] Maybe I'm not just being nervous - I searched for Venus and her first Bergen port call is listed as 29 May 2021.

So, it looks like your will be sailing on Viking Star, not Viking Venus.  A change of vessel is allowed under the terms of carriage*, so don't expect any recompense for the change. You should be getting some sort of notification from Viking, eventually. In the meantime, check MVJ to see if they made any changes there.

If you chose your dates because you wanted to sail on the new ship, then you should be looking at making some changes before the penalty phase begins (120 days prior to sailing) which means soon for your 1/26/21 departure. The exact dates should be spelled out in your Viking invoice.

That's what I was thinking. I tried Viking Chat but got nowhere: the agent responded " I've double checked my sources and your ship is Viking Venus ". I'll probably contact Viking Social for a more authoritative interpretation of the situation.

Other than the potential to find ourselves boarding the oldest Viking Ocean ship, rather than the newest , our decision to board in Barcelona was predicated on being on the "maiden voyage" of Venus. I would not have considered adding the Iberian Explorer to our booking otherwise.

Of course, the feeling among our party is that these cruises are not at all likely to sail, so what am I worrying about?

Yes, the website still says Venus so that is the only info that the Chat people probably have access to. But, somehow, I like the vibe coming from the Bergen harbor master.  I think Viking Social (aka, TellUs) are the people to connect with, especially if you all want to sail on the maiden.

I checked Barcelona but they are not publish a schedule of cruise calls because of Covid. When they do start publishing, http://www.portdebarcelona.cat/en/web/port-del-ciudada/cruceros

Cartagena shows nothing: https://www.puertocartagena.com/en/cruise-ship-terminal/cruise-ship-schedule

Malaga port schedule is not up to date: https://www.puertomalaga.com/en/cruise-forecast/

I sent the query and will post if any new information is forthcoming.

Thanks for the links - those are going right into my cruise file.

The other consideration is that the port lists are not 100% accurate. I checked Bergen for our June 2021 cruise on Star, noting an error in the dates.
