Top Sights & Attractions in Los Angeles

Hollywood walk of fame.

There are over 2,600 stars along the 15 blocks of the boulevard, so you can easily spend hours searching for the names of your favorite movie stars. Next to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, you’ll also find the TCL Chinese Theater, where you can see how your own hands and feet size up to the over 200 handprints of Hollywood stars imprinted in concrete squares.

Griffith Observatory and Griffith Park

Griffith Park is the largest state park in California, covering over 4,300 acres. Enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline and leisurely hikes through the hills. Within the park, there are several attractions to enjoy, including the Los Angeles Zoo, golf courses, and the Griffith Observatory, a perfect place for stargazing and learning more about astronomy.

View All Los Angeles Shore Excursions

Top things to do in los angeles, play on the santa monica pier.

For a fun-filled day in Los Angeles, head to Santa Monica, a scenic neighborhood that is home to a long pier stretching out into the Pacific Ocean. Stop by Santa Monica Pier’s carnival, where you can ride the Ferris wheel, try your hand at carnival-style games, and grab a bite to eat. From the pier’s vantage point, you’ll be privy to gorgeous views of the ocean and California’s coastline.

Explore Malibu

Escape the hustle and bustle of LA and drive up the coast to the laid-back city of Malibu. Enjoy lunch at the end of the historic Malibu Pier at a farmhouse-style restaurant, then head down to the sand and check out Malibu’s gorgeous and rugged beaches, known for their light golden sand and rocky formations that jut out into the ocean.

Take a Picture of the Hollywood Sign

A trip to Los Angeles isn’t complete until you see the city’s famous Hollywood sign. Set high up on a hill overlooking the city, the Hollywood Sign is visible from several vantage points. If you’re looking for a way to get closer, go on a shore excursion that includes a nearby photo op, where you’ll be able to pose in front of the iconic sign.

Where should I eat in Los Angeles?

Cruises from Los Angeles give you the opportunity to try some of LA’s fantastic restaurants before you set off on your vacation. Los Angeles is full of trendy restaurants that are run by some of the most renowned chefs in the world. Look for authentic Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood, including everything from fish tacos to locally caught and exquisitely prepared whole filets of fish at waterfront restaurants. Southern California’s sunny weather and low chance of rain also makes it a fantastic place for outdoor dining. There are beer gardens, patios perched on the beachside cliffs of Malibu, and rooftop bars downtown, where you can enjoy a bite to eat or a refreshing drink under the California sun.

What's the culture and history of Los Angeles?

Los Angeles was originally home to the Chumash and Tongva people. Eventually, the area was claimed by Spain by explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. It wasn’t until 1781 that the city was officially founded by the Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. In 1821, L.A. came under Mexican rule after the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, the city was purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. A boom in the city’s population occurred several decades later when oil was discovered in the region in the 1890s. Today, Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, home to over four million residents. While a large number of the population works in the entertainment industry, L.A. is also the financial and commercial center of Southern California.

Where can I go shopping in Los Angeles?

If you have dreams of sauntering down Rodeo Drive with your arms full of bags, head to the famous Beverly Hills area, which is full of luxury boutiques and designer brands. If you want to do some serious shopping without dropping a small fortune, head to Venice Beach and Santa Monica, where you’ll find an assortment of popular brand names mixed with affordable boutiques and beachwear shops.

How can I get around Los Angeles?

The best way to get around in Los Angeles is by car, as there aren’t many public transportation options that will take you all around the city. The bus system has several routes, but it’s important to account for traffic delays, no matter what form of transportation you choose. Therefore, booking a shore excursion is a smart way to guarantee that you’ll arrive at your ship on time.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The official currency of Los Angeles is the U.S. dollar, and you will find many ATMs all around the city. Tipping 15% to 20% of your total bill is customary for restaurants and taxi service, and most locals leave closer to 20%. It’s common to see a tip jar at eateries and cafes with counter service. Loose change or a small tip isn’t expected, but is often left by locals and appreciated by the staff of those establishments.

Los Angeles

cruises from california in november

Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the largest and most populous city in the state of California and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed the "City of Angels" partly because of its name's Spanish meaning, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also one of the most substantial economic engines within the nation, with a diverse economy in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood, a major center of the world entertainment industry. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles combined statistical area also has a gross metropolitan product of $831 billion, making it the third-largest in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the event for a third time in 2028.

Santa Catalina

cruises from california in november

Just off the coast of Southern California is an island that looks much like California did two hundred years ago, a wilderness of oak, cactus, and sage, an island with secluded coves surrounded by ocean with lush kelp forests and abundant sea life. This is Santa Catalina Island, a wilderness preserved for all to enjoy. Yet, Catalina has all the accommodations and recreational activities of a modern beach resort.

San Francisco

cruises from california in november

San Francisco is a golden dream come true, a place where heart, mind and soul embrace, lost in the simplicity of delightful deliverance. Fog and sun mingle playfully above America's favorite city; the cool, cloudy comfort of early morning slowly dissolving into the peaceful warmth of a gentle afternoon glow. Touch it....it is real. Feel it.....it is the essence of escape. Savor it.....it is one of a kind. Little wonder why San Francisco has been named the world's top city twice by readers of Condé Nast Traveler; the top U.S. city seven times since 1988. San Francisco's neighborhoods comprise its inner beauty, enhancing daydreams, opening doors to new and exciting visions. The City is a cultural wonderland, an ethnic treasure chest where custom, tradition and history are preserved, celebrated, shared. So take your time and explore The City. You'll find that the Gold Rush days have never really ended here; there's still plenty of gold to be found. The restless spirit of The City's Barbary Coast past lives on, fueled by a desire to be different, nurtured by infinite viewpoints, personalities, styles. Magical moments abound. The echo of cable car bells from atop great hills. The rejuvenation of the soul upon crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. The splendor and elegance of a boat cruise on San Francisco Bay. The soft touching of wine glasses over a gourmet meal. The views. The people. The sights. The sounds. The City. So come and share the wealth. Let your heart, mind and soul wander. Stay as long as you like. San Francisco encourages lingering. It was designed with adventure, romance and pleasure in mind. It is one of life's great indulgences, so indulge. It is one of the world's most gratifying escapes, so escape. It is where the world comes to unwind. It is America's preeminent playground.

Hey, there's more to this town than it just being the finish line for the annual Newport-Ensenada Race! The City of Ensenada has completed a total renovation of Primera, the main street downtown. Enjoy a stroll down the cobblestone sidewalk complete with outdoor cafes, interesting shops, strolling musicians and street vendors. The malecon (harbor boardwalk) renovation was completed last year and provides a beautifully landscaped walk along the harbor front to the Ventana Del Mar Plaza with its huge Mexican flag. From there, you can look across the rio at the new small craft harbor nestled in the middle of the new cruise ship docks. It will be interesting to watch the progress on this new endeavor. The story is that in order to expand the cargo port on the north side of the harbor, the developers had to relocate the passenger ships' dock and provide some type of recreational asset for the city. It looks to be a good solution. Ensenada is also a swell place to take possession of your new boat (more on that later), get a new bottom job for your old boat or set as your destination for an extended coastal cruise, a fun weekend road trip or the start of some long distance cruising! The people of Ensenada are trying hard to improve their city, both for turistas, a big part of their income and for themselves and their families. We have seen improvements which are good, and yet some loss of the "Mexico-ness" in some of the tourist areas. We have met a lot of the residents and business people and want to thank them for their hospitality. As visitors, it is our obligation to live up to the Bienvenidos and the Mi Casa es Su Casa that have been extended to us.

Cruise driverless cars to slowly resume operations in Houston after 'leadership team was replaced'

Remember those self-driving Cruise vehicles that were operating around Houston last year?

Although the General Motors-owned company has been off the road for months, it just announced that it is slowly resuming operations in Houston.

It's been a tumultuous few months for the company following an incident last October when a pedestrian was hit and dragged by one of the vehicles in San Francisco.

That woman was hit by another car before being placed in the path of the Cruise vehicle.

She survived, but the accident led to a string of events that culminated in the company suspending its operations nationwide.

First, the State of California announced Cruise could no longer operate.

Then, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an ongoing investigation.

Finally, Cruise announced in November that they were taking all 950 of their cars off the road.

Pete Bigelow, who is a technology writer with Automotive News , discussed the series of events with ABC13.

"That's been the big story for Cruise over the past few months," Bigelow said. "Subsequently, their whole leadership team was replaced."

The cars in Houston will have people behind the wheel for now, but a spokesperson from Cruise said they hope to be driverless again in a couple of weeks.

What's changed since the incident in San Francisco?

Cruise declined an interview with ABC13 but said in a statement that they hired an outside company to review the accident, updated their fleet's software, and are consulting with third-party companies to improve overall performance.

Bigelow said they likely addressed this particular accident, but the changes' long-term implications are unknown.

"I think clearly they've addressed that particular aspect of their technology," he said. "Beyond that, it's yet-to-be-determined what they've done from a technology perspective to enhance their overall operation."

Bigelow said he'd feel comfortable getting into a Cruise vehicle but added he'd have to think about it when putting someone like his child in one.

The safest places to travel during hurricane season.

Some destinations pose less of a risk than others.

Travel During Hurricane Season

The Caribbean coastline of Grand Cayman gets battered in a hurricane.

Hurricanes can wreak havoc on countries in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as far as several miles inland. This includes destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico and U.S.

Hurricane season occurs between June and November , which means that for about half of the year, you may have to worry about a hurricane interrupting your travels.

This doesn't mean you can't plan a tropical vacation or cruise during that time, though. Read on to discover where to safely travel during hurricane season.

Best islands to visit during hurricane season

In 2017, hurricanes Maria and Irma devastated Caribbean islands including Dominica, Puerto Rico and St. Martin. Yet other islands were untouched by the storms, namely those outside of the "hurricane belt." These include what's known as the ABC islands: Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. There are also other islands you can visit with some confidence during hurricane season. The following Caribbean destinations pose the least threat of a hurricane:

  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago

Best places to cruise during hurricane season

It's not as crazy as you might think to book a cruise during hurricane season. In addition to cruises within the southern Caribbean (in the destinations noted above), you can avoid worrying about a hurricane by choosing one of the following cruise vacations:

  • Alaska cruises
  • Hawaii cruises
  • Mediterranean cruises

What's more is many lines offer last-minute cruise deals or deep discounts to those who are willing to travel during this time. Bonus: If you don't have school-aged kids, fewer crowds make this an especially good time to travel.

Also consider that cruise ships have onboard weather tracking systems that help them avoid trouble. Experts at Cruise Critic say it's not uncommon for cruises to be shortened or extended during hurricane season so they can work around a storm. Your cruise line might switch your itinerary to include a stop at a different island in order to stay out of a storm's path (assuming there's space). Stopping at an unexpected destination such as Grand Turk instead of the Bahamas doesn't seem so bad.

Tips for travel during hurricane season

If you've got your eyes on an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean or an East Coast beach vacation and are worried how hurricane season will pan out, you can save yourself time and stress by planning ahead. Consider these tips when planning your vacation:

Purchase travel insurance

No matter where you decide to vacation during hurricane season, you should consider purchasing travel insurance . You may be given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your trip, but you can also buy a separate policy through companies like Travelex and Nationwide .

In addition to travel insurance products that cover flight cancellations , lost luggage and illness, you can also buy cancel for any reason insurance (CFAR) that will do exactly what it says – let you cancel for any reason, including weather-related events like hurricanes (which aren't always covered by standard policies). CFAR policies will refund you for the cost of your prepaid airfare, hotels and more, but only if you buy them ahead of time.

If you have a credit card that offers travel insurance as a member perk, you might also rely on that coverage, provided you use your card to pay for the trip. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card offers a free travel insurance benefit that will refund you up to $10,000 per trip for prepaid travel (think flights, hotels and tours) if severe weather ruins your plans. The card also provides protections for lost luggage, auto rental collision damage and more.

Consider destinations closer to home

Maybe you don't even want to deal with the potential for canceled or rescheduled flights. In that case, it might make sense to plan a weekend getaway or vacation in a destination you can reach by car.

Book a refundable hotel rate

To make this strategy work, you'll need to book a hotel fare you can cancel without any penalty. Since the National Hurricane Center knows when a hurricane is forming and, for the most part, can predict where it's heading, you can cancel your accommodations with even a few days' notice and just stay home.
