The city in 2019 had a population of 45,881, with as many again in the resort strips that extend for 20 km on either side.

Understand [ edit ]

This city was founded by Hellenistic people over 3000 years ago. They valued Cyprus for its copper and other metals, and mostly got around by sea, but the Romans from the first century AD carved a road right around the island and another inland through the mountains. As the chief port on this coast Kyrenia controlled trade and needed to be defended - the harbour castle you see today was built in 1540 and has been maintained ever since. Kyrenia had a Greek majority population until 1974, when Turkey invaded and most Greeks fled. After the ceasefire there was a population exchange, with Greeks deported and Girne, as it now became, settled by Turks from villages in the south.

The 1990s saw a thawing of the "Cold War" or frozen conflict between Greece, Cyprus and Turkey, and Girne became a popular resort for westerners. It's always called Kyrenia in tourist literature so that's the name used here.

By air [ edit ]

35.16 33.5 1 Ercan ( ECN  IATA ) is the airport for Northern Cyprus so most visitors arrive this way. Flights by Turkish Airlines and Pegasus connect across Europe but all make a stop in Turkey, see Northern Cyprus#Get in . Flights are hourly from Istanbul (IST and SAW) and frequent from Ankara, Izmir, Adana and Antalya.

Ercan is 42 km south and public transport is limited, you'd probably have to take the bus into Nicosia then out again. Hire a car unless your tour package includes a transfer.

You can also fly into Larnaca ( LCA  IATA ) in the south. Crossing the border is straightforward but your rental car will need extra insurance.

By boat [ edit ]

Fast-cat foot-passenger ferries ( Deniz Otobüsü ) sail May-Oct from the Turkish mainland:

• from Mersin Su Tu Th at 21:00, from Kyrenia M W F at 23:00, taking 80 min and operated by Akgunlerdenizcilik
• from Taşucu at 14:00 and from Kyrenia at 10:00, Friday only, taking 2 hr and operated by Akgunlerdenizcilik
• from Alanya is not sailing in 2023.
• from Hatay , operated by HADO [dead link] , is not sailing in 2023.

The only year-round ferry, and the only one to take vehicles ( Feribot ), is from Taşucu and takes 6 hours. It's operated by Akgunlerdenizcilik and in summer sails four times a week, usually at 23:30: from Taşucu on Su M Tu Th and from Kyrenia M Tu W F. Winter sailings are only once or twice a week.

The 35.342 33.3302 2 ferry terminal is 1 km east of the historic harbour and castle.

By bus [ edit ]

Buses here are like Turkish dolmuşes, they're minibuses that don't have a fixed timetable but set off when full, see Northern Cyprus#Get around .

Buses from Nicosia run every 15 min from Kyrenia Gate on Cemal Gürsel Cd, north edge of the city, and take 30 min.

Buses from Famagusta run hourly and take 90 min. From Güzelyurt they're every couple of hours and take an hour.

35.3397 33.3234 3 Kyrenia bus station is a fancy name for the drop-off / pick-up point on Mustafa Çağatay Cd, 200 m south of the castle. Don't go looking for the otogar shown on some maps 1 km south, it's just a bus parking lot.

Get around [ edit ]

The town is walkable, but you need a car to explore - there are a dozen rental companies in town if you didn't pick one up at the airport.

Minibuses ply along the coast resort strip but don't reach outlying sights such as St Hilarion Castle.

There's no longer a bicycle hire shop here.

• Ağa Cafer Pasha Mosque west side of the castle was built in 1590. The interior is fairly plain.
• St Andrews Church at the southwest corner of the castle is Anglican. Baldoken graveyard next to it has a few old Ottoman tombs.
• 35.3421 33.3187 2 Archangel Michael Church ( Ιερός Ναός Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ ) is Greek Orthodox. The church and its museum of frescos have been closed since 2018 for re-building.
• 35.3428 33.3241 3 Harbour breakwater is a good spot for views of the castle. Some sections are in poor repair and work is under way in 2023.
• Museum of Decorative Arts on Bozoklar Sk by the harbour remains closed in 2023. The Museum of Fine Arts has closed permanently.

• Bitter Lemons 200 m south of the abbey is the cottage where the writer Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990) lived in the 1950s. Shortly after he left he published Justine , the first part of his best known work Alexandria Quartet . The naturalist Gerald Durrell was his younger brother. In 2023 the cottage is derelict and for sale.
• 35.3137 33.3324 5 Noble Peasant Statue is a 40 m-tall metal structure visible from the Nicosia highway. The kneeling figure is meant to symbolise the common heritage of the warring factions of Cyprus, descendants all of humble farmers of the same soil, and thus promote reconciliation. Well, worth a go maybe.
• 35.2875 33.4102 7 Buffavento Castle is a similar Byzantine fortress, reached from its south side by a rugged trail.

• City Amphitheatre is a modern venue off Mersin Cd near the ferry port.
• Hiking: there are several trails in the mountain ridge separating Kyrenia from Nicosia.
• Scuba diving centres near town include North Cyprus British Scuba , Amphora Diving , Nautilus , Scuba Cyprus and Cyprus Underwater Explorers . They all offer training, equipment hire and trips for certified divers.
• Turtle watching: Loggerhead and Green turtles nest on Alagadi beach 30 km east of town. Females lay eggs in June and July, and hatchlings emerge in Aug and Sept. The beach is closed to the public on summer nights to protect the turtles, but you can join the volunteer rangers on guided walks.
• Boat trips potter along the coast, often in gulets and serving a meze lunch. Operators based at the harbour include Aphrodite, Derya Deniz, Happy Sea Yacht Tours and Vela Yachting .
• Paragliding: Highline have tandem paragliding flights, no experience needed.
• Golf: the nearest course is Korineum Resort, see Sleep.
• Northern Cyprus Music Festival is held at Bellapais Monastery mid-Sept to early Nov.

• The official currency is the Turkish lira (TL), but most businesses accept euro, British pounds, US dollars and bank cards.
• Supermarkets: a dozen medium-sized places, typically open daily 07:00-23:00, no dominating big store.

Kyrenia (Girne) – A Brief Guide

The origin of kyrenia (girne).

Kyrenia (Girne) has been host to a huge variety of civilisations over more than two thousand years, although the first human habitation in Cyprus as a whole can be traced back at least 10,000 years with artefacts of that age having been discovered in Akrotiri i n the south of the island.

The History of Kyrenia

Kyrenia has variously been colonised by the Egyptians, Hittites, Phoenicians, Persians, Alexander the Great, Romans, Byzantines, Richard the Lionheart of England, Lusignans, Genovese, Venetians as well as more recently the Ottomans. There are historic sites and relics from all these periods to be explored, all over Cyprus, which is a treasure trove for history lovers.

During the Roman period, Kyrenia was ruled by the East Roman Empire. Later, Orthodox Christianity was established in the region. King Richard the Lionheart of England joined the Crusades in 1191 and became ruler of Cyprus where he married his fiancée, Berengaria (who had been shipwrecked there) in Limassol Castle – the first and only Queen of England to be crowned so in Cyprus! The fabulous Crusader castles of St Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantaris date from this period.

The Venetians ruled Cyprus from 1489 to 1571, but sadly corruption and inefficiency marked the administration, despite the fabulous legacy of the Venetian fortifications of Kyrenia Castle, Famagusta and Nicosia (Lefkosa). In the meantime, the Ottoman Empire was expanding. In anticipation of attack from the north, the Venetians fortified the capital Nicosia (Lefkosia) with immense circular walls and built massive fortifications around Famagusta. Neither measures held back the Ottoman advance and, in 1570, Lefkosia (now known as Lefkosa in Turkish) was conquered. Almost a year later, after a long siege, Famagusta was taken by the Ottomans.

The Ottomans ruled Cyprus from 1571 for over 300 years until the British leased it in 1878. 20,000 Turkish settlers arrived during this time; the start of the Turkish language in Cyprus. An example of Ottoman architecture in the Kyrenia city centre is the Agha Cafer Pasha Mosque, built in 1589-90.

In 1914, Turkey and Britain were at war so Britain assumed outright sover-eignty of Cyprus without Turkey’s agreement at that time. This agree-ment did not come until the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. British control of Cyprus was initially welcomed by it majority Greek population, since it was assumed that Britain would ultimately work with the Greeks to help them achieve their dream of union (or Enosis) with Greece. The minority Turk-ish Cypriots, though, were of course less than enthusiastic at the prospect. You can read elsewhere about the sad period of war which developed from the 1950s onwards where the pro-Enosis EOKA terrorist organisation started to attack the British administration. These attacks eventually led to the troubles and eventually to the war which caused the division of the island. In November 2009, a war memorial to the 371 British servicemen and women killed during this period in Cyprus was unveiled in the centre of Kyrenia and is well worth a visit today.

Geography and Nature – Kyrenia Area

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, located in the Eastern end of the sea, south of Turkey. It has a surface area of 50 square kilometres and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. Kyrenia town is located in the centre of the north coast of Cyprus.

Rising up behind Kyrenia is the steep Besparmak (in English “Five Finger”) mountain range to the south of the town, with the Selvili Peak being the highest point of this range at 1023 metres above sea level. The north face of this range is covered with dense Aleppo Pine trees, with the flat coastal lands being rich in citrus, olive and carob trees. There are three mountain passes (or “Bogaz” in Turkish) – routes over the mountains to the Kyrenia shoreline, which has a mixture of beaches and coves. The main pass is known as Girne Bogaz (the route from the capital Nicosia over the mountains to Kyrenia). The other passes are the Mersinlik-Tatlisu road (half an hour to the East of Kyrenia) and Gecitkoy (half an hour to the West of Kyrenia).

Kyrenia Climate

Kyrenia (Girne) has a typical Mediterranean climate with approximately 326 days of sunshine per year. Summers are long and rainfall rare at this time. Winters are short , but with regular rainfall (10 days of rainfall per month in January and February). Snow is rarely seen on the Kyrenia mountain range. The lowest average temperature in January is 8 degrees centigrade (46F) and the warmest average temperature in July is around 38 degrees centigrade (100F). The shore areas are the coolest places to be in the summer, with lovely Mediterranean Sea breezes, however, there is quite high humidity in summer. The average sea temperature is 21C and the average humidity is 68.8%.

Within the historic harbour of Kyrenia you can find the Public Arts Museum, which is built in an old 18th Century building. Olive oil presses, traditional agricultural implements and tools, weaving looms and traditional Cypriot clothing is all on display.

Kyrenia Castle

The first reports of a castle in Kyrenia come from the Roman period, and the original castle was then fortified by the Byzantines and again by the Lusignans. However, what is most in evidence today are the fortified walls built by the Venetians during their rule of Cyprus to guard against the possible invasion by the Ottomans.

In 1965, divers off the coast of North Cyprus discovered what has been found to be the oldest shipwreck ever recorded. The vessel dates back to 300BC and was a trade ship, carrying cargo that included amphorae full of almonds and wine as well as other items. The wreck was brought to the surface and is kept in a specially-controlled atmosphere to ensure its continued preservation.

The 12th century Byzantine church of St George the Castle has been preserved within the castle walls. As fate would have it, when the Ottoman invasion finally occurred in 1571, the Venetians seem to have given up without a fight!

Today, you pass through the entrance in the northwest corner of the castle and walk along a long ramp, leading to the central parade ground area of the castle. On the way, you pass a tomb of an Ottoman admiral. The central area is lined with military guardrooms, living quarters and stables, with more ramps leading up to defences on the castle walls. You can also climb steps that take you to the Lusignan royal apartments and the small chapel. In the depths of the castle, dungeons have been graphically equipped with large models of hapless prisoners. The battlements of Kyrenia Castle are worth the climb for the view alone.

The Kyrenia New Harbour

The economy of Kyrenia depends mostly upon tourism with visitors arriving from all over the world. There is a huge boom in the town at present with new apartments, hotels and restaurants springing up every month. Despite offering the best of modern tourism , happily, Kyrenia old town retains all of its traditional charms.

“University tourism” also plays an important role in the town’s economy. Girne American University was established in 1992 and now nearly 2,300 students contribute to the commercial and cultural activities of Kyrenia.

Events in Kyrenia

In September every year, an International Theatre Festival is organised. Plays are performed in all three major towns and cities of Kyrenia, Lefkosa and Famagusta. The Kyrenia Municipality Studio is a main organiser of the festival.

In October every year, the International Olive Festival takes place in Zeytinlik village to the North West of Kyrenia It has taken place every year since 2001. At this festival, the folklore team of Kyrenia as well as the Turkish Art Music Team perform their shows. Various exhibitions of handmade lacework and traditional Cyprus Pottery are exhibited. The festival also hosts the Olive Food competition.

Bellapais Abbey

History of bellapais.

The site of Bellapais may have been an early residence of the Bishops of Kyrenia, as well as their refuge during the Arab raids of the 7th and 8th centuries.

In 1187, Jerusalem was captured by the Saracens and the Augustinian canons fled to Cyprus. Aimery de Lusignan founded Bellapais Abbey for them in around 1200. It was initially consecrated as the Abbey of St. Mary of the Mountain.

The White Canons (also known as Premonstratensians) came next, and this was the rule that was adopted from 1206 onwards. Their white habits gave Bellapais one of its names— it was called the “White Abbey” in the 15th and 16th century. French King Hugh 3rd was a benefactor of the Abbey and his tomb is said to be in the grounds. The Abbey became very wealthy, with King Hugh 4th living in the Abbey.

The Venetians shortened the name, Abbaye de la Paix (Abbey of Peace), to De la Paix, which eventually became Bellapais.

The Ottomans gave Bellapais Abbey to the Orthodox Church. The buildings were neglected and fell into disrepair, but the abbey church was used as the parish church for the surrounding village (presumably populated by descendants of the monks).

The abbey fell further into disrepair over the years, its stone being used to build houses in the village. In 1878, the British Army cemented the floor of the great hall and used it for a military hospital. The ruins were repaired in 1912 by George Jeffery, Curator of the Ancient Monuments of Cyprus.

The lovely Kybele Restaurant, set in the grounds, has a historic flavour, where guests can sit and enjoy classical music whilst admiring the floodlit Abbey and Mediterranean Sea below. The Bellapais International Music Festival www.bellapaisfestival.com is a major cultural attraction of north Cyprus , every year in May and June, with concerts of the highest standard taking place in the great hall.

The bulk of visitors to Cyprus rely on tour-company coaches to get around. Independent travellers have a choice of renting vehicles, catching buses, or taking taxis. For the more intrepid, walking and cycling are also options. The transport system in the north is nowhere near as well-developed as that of the south, and your best bet here is to rent a car or book a tour.

By car and motorcycle

Following reorganization in 2010, the south now has a good urban and intercity bus system . Buses are modern, usually on time, and although run by different companies in each district (Zinonas in Larnaka, OSEA in the Agia Napa/Protaras area – sometimes called “free Famagusta”, EMEL in Lemesos, OSYPA in Pafos, and OSEL in Lefkosia) fares are standard and simple: single journey €1.50, daily ticket €5, weekly ticket €20, monthly ticket €40, daily intercity €15). Each company has its own contact number and website: Lefkosia (77777755), Lemesos (77778121), Larnaka (80007744), Pafos (80005588), Gazimağusa (23819090). You can also access information about Intercity Buses and airport shuttles on 80007789, intercity-buses.com . A very useful combined website at cyprusbybus.com pulls all the information together. Rural buses , especially in the Troodos Mountains, are less frequent and less reliable.

Bus services in the north are unreliable, don’t seem to follow a timetable, will often wait until the bus is full before setting off, and are little used by visitors. Indeed, native Turkish Cypriots rarely use them either, so you’re likely to find yourself sitting next to Turkish mainland settlers or Turkish army personnel. If you decide to brave this rather chaotic system, note that fares fall into the €3–4 range.

The best and most efficient way of getting around Cyprus is to rent a car or, if you’re not put off by their poor safety record, motorcycles, quad bikes, scooters or beach buggies. Car rental starts at around €50 per day in summer, €25 per day in winter – the longer the rental period, the lower the rate – but it’s worth prebooking and shopping around. And if you intend exploring the remoter parts of the island, it is well worth splashing out on a 4WD , especially as normal rental agreements often exclude driving on dirt roads. Petrol and diesel cost around €1 per litre, and there are plenty of filling stations. Bear in mind, though, that some may be closed in August, so it pays to keep your tank as full as you can.

Motorways (prefix “A”) and main roads (prefix “B”) are of good quality but side roads, especially in the mountains, might be unsurfaced. Visitors from the UK will feel particularly at home because driving is on the left, cars are right-hand drive, and there’s a whole host of familiar street furniture, from Belisha beacons to zebra crossings. Speed limits (strictly enforced) are as follows: motorways max 100km/h, min 65km/h. Unless otherwise indicated main roads have a limit of 80km/h; built-up areas 50km/h.

Parking is free in many villages, while town-centre car parks charge €0.50 to €3 for half a day. On-street parking in major towns is meter controlled, falling in the range €0.80–2 during office hours. Parking is free on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and public holidays.

Driving in the north is similar to driving in the south: cars keep to the left, signs are international, there are plenty of petrol stations, road signs are usually in kilometres, though sometimes in miles. Because development has been patchy, you might well come across bottlenecks where good new roads disgorge traffic onto narrow unimproved ones.

Driving tips

Contrary to popular belief, Cypriots are usually courteous drivers. However, some drive very fast, while others, especially in rural areas, drive insanely slowly. While the fatality rate on Cyprus’s roads is higher than the UK’s (particularly low) figure, it still compares well with, for example, Greece and the US.

• Alcohol limits are low – 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood (compared with 80mg per 100ml in the UK) – and punishment for exceeding them severe. The only way to be sure of not falling foul of the law is not to drink at all if you’re driving.
• Children must use restraints appropriate to their height and weight. In taxis, they can use rear seat adult seat belts if that’s all that’s available. Rear-facing baby seats must not be used in front seats protected by air bags, unless the air bags have been deactivated.
• Jaywalking in towns seems to be endemic, often because the pavement is obstructed by telegraph poles, restaurant tables and chairs, eccentrically parked vehicles and so on.
• You’ll often see several people crammed onto a single moped – treat them with caution.
• Donkeys (often heavily laden) and goats can be a hazard on country roads.
• Don’t cross double lines to overtake.
• Don’t acknowledge courtesy by holding out your hand palm outwards. This is, in Cyprus as in Greece, a very rude gesture.
• For roadside assistance call the Cyprus Automobile Association (22313233). In case of accidents, call 112.

Main towns and cities are well served by rental agencies , both local and international. Those in holiday areas like Pafos and Agia Napa offer a range of vehicles in addition to cars – scooters, motorcycles, quad bikes and buggies.

Drivers under 25 who have been driving for less than three years must inform the rental agency so that special under-age insurance can be provided.

If you rent a car in the south, many companies will not allow you to cross to the north – check when arranging the rental. Where companies do allow you to cross into the north, most will not arrange insurance – you’ll need to arrange your own at the crossing point – there will be a booth where you can do this. Petsas Rent a Car will, however, arrange insurance for the north on your behalf.

Since none of the big international car rental companies covers North Cyprus , you’re limited to local firms. However, most will deliver and pick up from your hotel, or from Ercan Airport, and some now include that service for Larnaka. Note that to rent a car in North Cyprus you must be at least 25 years old.

The TRNC Rent a Car Association produces a booklet annually with advice on renting cars in the north, and the phone numbers of about forty rental companies. Otherwise, try British Rentacar or Sun Rent a Car .

In the south taxis are numerous in larger towns and cities and can either be hailed from the street or picked up at ranks. All urban taxis should have meters and fares are controlled by the government. In rural areas taxis do not have meters, so it’s as well to agree a fare before setting off. The fare structure for urban taxis is complicated: it is divided into day (6.01am–8.30pm) and night tariffs, with an initial charge (day €3.42, night €4.36) and a fare per km (day €0.73, night €0.85). There are also charges for waiting (per hour), for luggage (per item) and during public holidays. In the north , taxis (marked by a “Taksi” sign on the roof) do not have meters, so you should agree a price before getting in. Taxis are not allowed to cruise, and operate from official ranks which are closed at night. In both the south and the north you can also use shared taxis , which carry between four and eight passengers, between main towns. In the south (where they are also called Transurban Taxis) these operate on a fixed half-hourly timetable from 6am to 6pm (Sundays 7am to 5pm); in the north (where they are known as dolmuses), they usually wait until they are full.

Cyprus’s mild climate is ideal for cyclists, though during midsummer the obvious precautions – helmet, sun cream, plenty of drinking water – should be taken. Most towns in the south have bike rental companies, and mountain and road bikes are readily available, with charges usually being around €50 for three days, €100 for a week. A new cycle track has recently been established in the Troodos Mountains, with nearly 60km of well-signposted surfaced and unsurfaced track. For information on cycling in Cyprus, contact the Cyprus Cycling Federation , 21 Amphipoleos Street, Nicosia (22449870). The renting of bikes in the north is less developed than in the south, but a number of hotels will be able to help arrange this.

For such a small island, Cyprus offers a remarkable variety of exhilarating drives , from the ups and downs of the Troodos Massif to the off-road excitement of the Akamas Peninsula.

Lemesos to Pafos

Take the old road B6 west from Lemesos, first through the Home Counties tidiness of the British Akrotiri base, then past the castle at Kolissi and the ancient sites at Kurion and the Sanctuary of Apollon Ylatis, to the beautiful coast at Petra tou Romiou.

Pafos to Pano Panagia

A steep climb up from Pafos, along the E606, brings you to rolling upland vineyards, pretty villages and monasteries, and the birthplace of Archbishop Makarios III.

The Akamas Peninsula

The empty wilderness of the Akamas Peninsula can be explored by car (though only a 4WD will do), from the Avagas Gorge in the south to Lara Bay in the middle and the Baths of Aphrodite in the north.

Güzelyurt to Kykkos Monastery
