David Gilmour Confirms First Tour Dates in Eight Years

David Gilmour has confirmed his first tour dates in support of his newly announced album, Luck and Strange .

In October 2024, the former Pink Floyd member will play six shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London. They mark his first confirmed live performances in eight years. Update: Gilmour has confirmed US tour dates in New York City and Los Angeles.

Previewing his upcoming tour dates in an interview with Uncut , Gilmour expressed a desire to avoid playing ’70s-era Pink Floyd material. “[Other decades] might be better represented,” he explained. “I mean, at least one from the Sixties. The one we’ve done in the past is 1967’s ‘Astronomy.’ That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start. There’s songs from [1987’s]  A Momentary Lapse of Reason  and [1994’s]  The Division Bell albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.” Gilmour didn’t cite a specific reason for avoiding Pink Floyd classics from Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall , but it’s presumably due to his estranged relationship with former Pink Floyd bandmate Roger Waters, who spearheaded these albums. (For fans who do prefer to see those classic Pink Floyd albums performed live, Brit Floyd is heading back on tour soon.)

Luck and Strange , Gilmour’s first new album in nine years, is set for release on September 6th. As a preview, he released “The Piper’s Call” as the album’s first single.

David Gilmour (born March 6, 1946) is a revered British guitarist, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Cambridge, England, UK. On top of being a successful solo artist, Gilmour is best known as the guitarist and co-vocalist in the seminal progressive rock band Pink Floyd.

Encouraged by his parents to pursue music, Gilmour took an early interest in the sounds of Bill Haley, Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers. Before long Gilmour began practicing the guitar, later meeting future Pink Floyd members Syd Barrett and Roger Waters at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys. The singer-songwriter went on to busk around France and Spain with Barrett in 1965 in a tumultuous period for Gilmour. By 1967 he had been invited to join Pink Floyd and along with Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, made musical history selling over 250 million records worldwide. After Barrett’s departure from the band in 1968 Gilmour provided lead vocals notably on the albums “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Wish You Were Here”.

10 years later, in an attempt to utilise all of his musical and songwriting talents, Gilmour turned his attention to recording a solo album. The 1978 self-titled release, marked by its bluesy, guitar-driven sound, earned strong reviews from critics and peaked at No. 17 in the UK. Gilmour’s sophomore album “About Face” was released in 1984 and became a tool to distance himself away from Pink Floyd and provide a commentary for his thoughts. In 1987 Gilmour took complete control of Pink Floyd with the departure of Roger Waters which resulted in “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” in 1987 and “The Division Bell” in 1994.

In 2005 Gilmour was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to music, after which he released his third solo album “On an Island” in 2006. The live album “Live in Gdansk” appeared in 2010 followed by a collaborated with the electronic outfit the Orb on the album “Metallic Spheres”. A year later Rolling Stone magazine ranked him the 14th best guitarist of all time.

Live reviews

David Gilmour - what can you write about such a name? A concert with the singer and guitarist of one of the most famous rock bands in the world - Pink Floyd - is an event that you will never forget and that you should never miss.

Although David Gilmour is now an old grey-haired man, his voice still sounds like it did in the best Pink Floyd days. Live, his rendition of arguably their most famous song "Wish You Were Here", is performed in such a powerful way, that you'd think time had stopped for some decades. Together with piano and strings this song is unforgettable live.

I can't imagine what it would have been like back in the day. Another song that was worth the long, long journey to hear it live was "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Especially in the acoustic version - it is unbelievable what Gilmour made out of this old classic. He started with a neverending intro morphing the song so that only experts in the audience recognized it from the initial strains.

All in all I can give everybody the tip to use the chance to go to a David Gilmour concert - You never know when it will be his last one. Forget songs like "The Wall" - these songs were made during a time Fink Floyd was successful - too successful in my eyes. The good songs were their earlier ones. And in concert, Gilmour reminded us of this fact.

David Jon Gilmour, CBE may not be a recognisable household name yet you only have to mention the name of his world famous band Pink Floyd and people suddenly realise David's importance to the genres of progressive and psychedelic rock.

Although this musician is considered one of the world's greatest guitarist by a number of celebrated publications, you really do have to watch him perform live in order to appreciate his musical talents. Although Gilmour is almost 70 years old, he does not miss one of those perfect notes all evening. Beginning with the spanning 'Breathe' followed by 'Time' he manages to hold the entire venue's attention with the simple movement of his guitar strings. The vocal also sounds really good considering that David was never a major vocalist in the original lineup. This is a fantastic way to hear the likes of 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Astronomy Domine' as Pink Floyd rarely tour anymore as a whole outfit. The addition of an orchestra gives a new dimension to the classic music and offers a new level of show to the whole operation.

The first Concert in Rome of the legendary guitar of Pink Floyd has been one of best live shows I've ever seen. The Playlist was incredible, ranging from the last tracks of Rattle That Lock up to the wonderful dreamy Fat Old Sun from "Atom Heart Mother".

The set of guitars Gilmour used included the relic sunburst Telecaster famous after his solo album "About Face", his Lap Steel, a blonde Gibson LA and the absolute rock legend "The Black Strat".

The dozen of guitar solos David played had his un-comparable taste and feeling. The second solo of Comfortably Numb, the best song in the human history, concluded the best event held in Rome for decades.

Thank you David for your art!

The concert was perfect. Gilmour is still able to sing like he's always sang. My problem was with the venue, eventhough the sound was amazing and much better than other venues, the entrance to the event was a total disaster. Without no particular reason, the security team kept us and almost have of the public, outside on line for more than half an hour, for we missed the first 5 songs, eventhough we arrived there before 8pm. I'd think twice going back to Radio City Music Hall for attending a concert there, and if so, we'd be sure to be there 2 hours ahead of the gig, to make sure we don't miss 30% of the show....

Thumbs down for Radio City security team!

Show espetacular.

The performance was awesome and that was what I was waiting for.

He played a mix of his and Pink Floyd's songs but I wish more visual effects on the big screen behind the stage. It showed movies only on some specific songs and not on all of them.

The ticket selling process was awful and I don't know if here is the right place to complain or not. We got three different place in three different tries for buying the tickets and the black market was huge outside the venue, and also many many fake tickets. The ID was supposed to be checked by the entrance but no one cared about it, funny!

5 Star Show all the way! One of the best shows I've ever seen. Sound was perfect, stage show was great and venue was ideal. He is the closest thing to the original Pink Floyd sound and feel as there original shows. I've seen the Wall Tour a few years back and this is what I've been missing all these years in my concert going experiences. This is one I will never forget and my buddies who didn't go are still kicking themselves! Best of wishes to David and his crew what a show!

Simply fantastic... he is not from this world. Worth every penny. Unforgettable show...perfectly produced...technically irretouchable. David Gilmour and his crew made me travel to the past through the classics Us and Then, Wish You Were Here, High Hopes, Astronomy Domine to the recent Girl on the Yellow Dress and Rattle that Lock to quote a few songs. If you have the opportunity and love Pink Ployd like me, you cannot miss this show...it will forever be in my mind...

Great show, started off a little slow but the fourth song was "Wish you were here" and that got the crowd going.

Very good sound quality, some excellent Gilmour solos, if you are a fan of great guitar playing don't miss David Gilmour and his Black Strat.

Finished off with a wonderful rendition of Comfortably Numb. It would be nice if he interacted with the crowd, more, there was very little crowd interaction.

In a world exclusive interview in this month’s edition of Uncut , Gilmour spoke about his tour plans, telling us there was “an unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the ‘70s”, but that he would be more likely to perform songs from other decades: “Yeah, they might be better represented. I mean, at least one from the ’60s. The one we’ve done in the past is ‘ Astronomy ’ [ The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn , 1967]. That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start.

“There’s songs from the Momentary Lapse Of Reason and The Division Bell albums. I mean, I think ‘ High Hopes ’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.”

Gilmour also spoke about amendments he has made to his touring band, says: “It was all too robotic, and some people would have been better off in a Pink Floyd tribute band. So I thought we’d get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space. That’s the plan. So we’re going to have some of the younger guys alongside Guy [Pratt ] and the Webb Sisters , who sang with  Leonard Cohen  on his last tours.”

Pink Floyd fans in the United Kingdom are in for a very special treat this fall! Pink Floyd’s iconic guitarist and bassist David Gilmour will kick off a short residency in London at the Royal Albert Hall this October. It will mark his first series of live performances in about eight years. The tour dates will support his upcoming album, Luck And Strange , set for release on September 6.

Videos by American Songwriter

Fans shouldn’t expect too many Pink Floyd renditions on this tour. According to an interview with Uncut Magazine, Gilmour revealed that he is not interested in performing 1970s-era Pink Floyd material on his upcoming tour. However, fans can still expect some Pink Floyd songs as well as Gilmour’s solo tracks.

The first performance of David Gilmour’s upcoming residency will be on October 9 in London, England at the Royal Albert Hall. The short tour will end after six dates on October 15.

David Gilmour Reveals Plans for a UK Tour in Support of ‘Luck and Strange’

David Gilmour Reveals Plans for a UK Tour in Support of ‘Luck and Strange’ | Society Of Rock Videos

via Sonic Perspectives / YouTube

In an exciting development for fans across the United Kingdom, Pink Floyd’s legendary guitarist David Gilmour is setting the stage for a series of live performances. This announcement comes hot on the heels of news about his latest solo venture, ‘Luck and Strange,’ marking his first album in nearly a decade. Officially slated for release on Friday, 6th September via Sony Music, the album has already begun to stir significant anticipation among his audience.

Just a day after unveiling ‘Luck and Strange,’ Gilmour treated fans to a first listen of the lead single ‘The Piper’s Call,’ accompanied by a visually captivating music video. The reveal further amplified excitement and speculation about the possibility of live shows.

Glimpses into Gilmour’s Upcoming Live Acts

Hints about Gilmour’s return to the stage were subtly dropped to those pre-ordering the album via his official webstore. A message promising early access to future UK live dates for anyone ordering ‘Luck and Strange’ in any format caught the eye of eagle-eyed fans. To keep the momentum, a ‘Register for Access’ form was made available on the webstore, encouraging fans to sign up for more information on the anticipated concerts. Those who registered received an email confirmation stating, “We’ll be in touch once live dates are announced,” fueling further speculation and excitement.

In a candid discussion featured in the latest edition of Uncut magazine, the 78-year-old Gilmour shared insights into his plans for the live performances, hinting at a refreshed line-up and approach. He expressed a desire to move away from the overly mechanized feel of past tours, aiming for a dynamic that fosters creativity and spontaneity.

“I changed the band around last time for a number of reasons, one of which was it was all too robotic, and some people would have been better off in a Pink Floyd tribute band. So I thought we’d get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space. That’s the plan,” Gilmour explained.

A Fresh Ensemble and a Nod to Rock’s Rich Tapestry

He also revealed that the upcoming shows would feature a blend of seasoned musicians and fresher faces, including bassist Guy Pratt and the Webb Sisters, known for their contribution to Leonard Cohen’s last tours. This mix promises to bring a unique energy and vibrancy to the live renditions of Gilmour’s work.

Gilmour’s last musical outing in the UK was during the Rattle That Lock Tour in September 2016, which included a memorable six-night residency at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The forthcoming tour, therefore, marks a much-anticipated return to the UK stage for the celebrated musician, adding a new chapter to his illustrious career.

Aside from his imminent tour, the article briefly delves into the fascinating origins of rock band names, including Pink Floyd. The name draws from the forenames of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, showcasing Barrett’s tribute to his musical influences. This segment touches on several other bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, named in a cheeky nod to a strict high school gym teacher, and The Yardbirds, highlighting the creative and sometimes rebellious spirit behind the naming of these iconic groups. Such stories lend a glimpse into the eclectic and often personal facets of rock history, anchored by Gilmour’s own legendary status within it.

David Gilmour's prestige venue Luck and Strange tour now includes his first US dates in 8 years

Stellar live band includes Greg Philinganes on keys, Guy Pratt on bass and Adam Betts on drums

David Gilmour performing

David Gilmour is taking to the road in some style, and has announced his first US dates for eight years. The ex-Pink Floyd man has also confirmed a stellar line-up for his backing band, including Guy Pratt on bass, Greg Phillinganes and Rob Gentry on keyboards, Adam Betts on drums, and Ben Worsley on guitar. That’s a line-up we’d pay to see, Gilmour or no Gilmour.

The deluxe tour is in support of forthcoming album Luck and Strange - Gilmour’s first solo offering since 2015’s Rattle that Lock - which itself features contributions from a stellar cast of players, including most of the above, plus luminaries of the stature of Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums. Ambient maestro Will Gardner is on arrangement duties. First single The Piper’s Call (below), was released in April.

What was going through my addled brain I don’t know – it was fucking freezing in that barn... David Gilmour

Sadly departed Pink Floyd co-founder Rick Wright also makes a surprise posthumous appearance on keys.

“I toured in 2006, and Rick asked if he could be in my band and I said ‘of course’,” said Gilmour. “And when we finished that tour, in January, I got together that touring band and said, “Come down to the house and we’ll jam for a week in the barn”. What was going through my addled brain I don’t know – it was fucking freezing in that barn."

Chilly it may have been, but that impromptu session forms the core of the new album's title track.

"The first jam we did on the Monday morning was the one that became that song," Gilmour continued. "I added a chorus and middle-eight, rebuilt the stuff on top with different chords.

"There’s bits where Rick’s playing a Hammond lick and I’ve put guitars on since and I’m playing with him, bouncing off his keyboards and it is a bit weird, but I’m not phased by that element of Rick being there at all at the moment.

"I just think: “Ah, it’s Rick, it’s me, we’re playing.”

Those US dates comprise just two each at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and New York’s Madison Square Gardens and join the previously announced European leg, at similarly prestigious venues.

Rome’s Circus Maximus (or Massimo), which will host five dates is an ancient chariot racing amphitheatre, and London’s Royal Albert Hall is arguably the UK capital’s highest-status stage. Gilmour last performed live as a solo artist in a Royal Albert Hall residency in 2016.

So, tickets will be highly sought after. To increase the chances of securing a spot, you can sign up for first access Gilmour's webiste . Early access opens on 15 May, before tickets go on general sale this Friday, 17 May.

David Gilmour Luck and Strange

David Gilmour has announced his new album ‘Luck and Strange’, to be released on 6th September and 21  Tour Dates at The Royal Albert Hall in London, The Circo Massimo in Italy, The Intuit Dome, The Hollywood Bowl in CA, and Madison Square Garden in NY.

'Luck and Strange’ was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with alt-J and Marika Hackman. Of this new working relationship, David says, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on ‘Luck and Strange’, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour elaborates, “We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things.” Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating, “He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who’s playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason.” The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points’ and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt & Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry & Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David’s house. Some contributions emerged from the live streams that Gilmour and family performed to a global audience during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021; Romany Gilmour sings, plays the harp and appears on lead vocals on ‘Between Two Points’. Gabriel Gilmour also sings backing vocals. The album’s cover image, photographed and designed by Anton Corbijn, is inspired by a lyric written by Charlie Gilmour for the album’s final song ‘Scattered’. Of working with his family on ‘Luck and Strange’, David says, “Polly and I have been writing together for over thirty years and the Von Trapped live streams showed the great blend of Romany’s voice and harp-playing and that led us into a feeling of discarding some of the past that I’d felt bound to and that I could throw those rules out and do whatever I felt like doing, and that has been such a joy.” Luck and Strange 1. Black Cat 2. Luck and Strange 3. The Piper’s Call  4. A Single Spark 5. Vita Brevis 6. Between Two Points - with Romany Gilmour 7. Dark and Velvet Nights 8. Sings 9. Scattered

You won’t need to travel to “The Dark Side of the Moon” to see David Gilmour live in 2024.

The long-time Pink Floyd member has ten concerts lined up this fall as part of his ‘Luck and Strange Tour’ in support of his upcoming album with the same name.

A whopping five (!) of those ten Gilmour gigs will be in New York City when he takes on a short residency at Madison Square Garden from Nov. 4-10.

At all shows, fans can expect the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer to deliver cuts from the new record as well as more obscure Pink Floyd tracks that might not normally make the set list.

“Yeah, that might be bette represented,” he told Uncut Magazine, according to Jambands.com . “I mean, at least one from the 60s. The one we’ve done in the past is ‘Astronomy’ [“Astronomy Domine,” track one from 1967 debut ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’]. That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start. There’s songs from the ‘[A] Momentary Lapse of Reason’ and ‘The Division Bell’ albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.”

If this sounds like your dream classic rock deep dive, tickets are available for all shows as soon as today.

Some are quite affordable, too.

At the time of publication, ticket prices start at $66 before fees on Vivid Seats.

His New York shows have seats starting anywhere from $102 to $196 before fees depending on the gig.

Curious how much tickets cost for the Gilmour gig of your choosing?

We’re here to help.

Our team has everything you need to know and more about David Gilmour’s 2024 ‘Luck and Strange Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to flucutation.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

The last full concert Gilmour performed was back in September 2016 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Here’s what he took to the stage that evening, according to  Set List FM :

01.) “5 A.M.”

02.) “Rattle That Lock”

03.) “Faces of Stone”

04.) “What Do You Want From Me” (Pink Floyd song)

05.) “The Blue”

06.) “The Great Gig in the Sky” (Pink Floyd song)

07.) “A Boat Lies Waiting”

08.) “Wish You Were Here” (Pink Floyd song)

09.) “Money” (Pink Floyd song)

10.) “In Any Tongue”

11.) “High Hopes” (Pink Floyd song)

12.) “One of These Days” (Pink Floyd song)

13.) “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V)” (Pink Floyd song)

15.) “Coming Back to Life” (Pink Floyd song)

16.) “On an Island”

17.) “The Girl in the Yellow Dress”

18.) “Today”

19.) “Sorrow” (Pink Floyd song)

20.) “Run Like Hell” (Pink Floyd song)

21.) “Time” (Pink Floyd song)

22.) “Breathe (Reprise)” (Pink Floyd song)

23.) “Comfortably Numb” (Pink Floyd song)

Gilmour’s new album “Luck and Strange” is due out Sept. 6.

Prior to the record’s release, he dropped three singles; the gentle, rockin’ “The Piper’s Call,” the foreboding, haunting “Zero Hour” with Michael Berkeley and Neil Tennant and the introspective ballad “Between Two Points” featuring his daughter Romany Gilmour on vocals.

You can listen to the trio of tracks  here .

According to a press release, here’s who will be performing with Gilmour this year:

Guy Pratt   bass and background vocals

Greg Phillinganes   keyboards

Rob Gentry   keyboards

Adam Betts   drums

Ben Worsley   guitar

Louise Marshall   background vocals

Hattie Webb   background vocals

Charlie Webb   background vocals

In regards to this troupe, Gilmour said he mixed things up because “it was all too robotic, and some people would have been better off in a Pink Floyd tribute band,” and wanted to “get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space.”

Gilmour isn’t your only rock hero from yesterday on the road this year.

Here are just five more of our favorites that just may be coming to a venue near you these next few months.

•  Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band

•  Robert Plant with Alison Krauss

David Gilmour didn’t just take the blues and transform it into epic psychedelic prog – he changed the way we play guitar solos

We examine how the Pink Floyd guitar hero altered the way we approach the blues – and it’ll whip your phrasing and feel into shape

A B/W image of David Gilmour performs with Pink Floyd in 1977, playing his Black Strat

Few players have taken the blues vocabulary and incorporated it into progressive and psychedelic rock with such eloquence. David Gilmour’s tone, note choice and sense of rhythm elevated Pink Floyd – and solos in general – to a different level when he joined the band in 1967.

As the era of the epic guitar solo dawned, David established himself as a soloist few could match, with a strong sense of melody and a knack for creating memorable parts – even in some of the more ‘out there’ freeform jams that were so characteristic of the early Floyd.

From this time up to and including The  Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, there were strong echoes (pun intended) of Jimi Hendrix in David’s Fuzz Face’d ambient solos. From Wish You Were Here onwards, he refined his tones a little more.

There was still lots of edge when required, but he developed a more controlled sound, often featuring the latest gadgets as they became available: for example, the MXR Phase 90 features on Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Have A Cigar .

Though David is famous for his complicated multi-amp rigs and effects racks, he maintains that it’s possible to get the essence of his sound with relatively simple and easily available gear. This may seem hard to believe, but it is certainly true to say that David’s playing would be recognisable whatever he plugged into.

The example solo/licks here are inspired by his solos on tracks such as Comfortably Numb , On An Island and What Do You Want From Me . I’m using the bridge pickup with medium/high gain (not too much, though).

David is known for playing at high stage/studio volumes and gets most of his sustain from this, so be prepared to tweak and maybe add a little compression before any drive. A digital echo/reverb gives a nice finishing touch.

David Gilmour blues lesson tab

The first phrase establishes a strong beginning with the held bend, before playing around more rhythmically in this same area (shape 1 C# minor pentatonic) and reiterating the bend to finish.

Be very mindful of details such as vibrato, short staccato hits and bluesy quarter-tone bends. These are marked in the transcription, but in an ideal scenario you’ll eventually find yourself adding this sort of stuff in without thinking too consciously. That’s when you’ll know things are really coming together!

David Gilmour blues lesson tab

Beginning in a similar manner to Example 1 with a held repeated bend, we soon kick things up a gear, shifting between shapes 1 and 5 of the C# minor pentatonic. A particularly notable feature here is the repeated use of that doublestop at the 9th fret of the third and second strings.

Pull this slightly sharp and you’re using one of David’s favourite devices, featured in many of his solos. Elsewhere, keep an eye out for little details like staccato notes and even a touch of palm muting.

David Gilmour blues lesson tab

Reusing the last note of Example 2, we then rake quickly across a C# minor triad. You’ll recognise this as another favourite move of David’s; it’s a great way to add an exciting flourish without feeling the need to zoom around the fretboard.

We follow up with some funky doublestops and muted rhythmic hits. Maybe try a few different ways to finish this phrase using different rhythms or string bends. This could be the way to incorporate some Gilmour into your own style.

David Gilmour blues lesson tab

Starting with a rake across the second and first strings, we then tackle a couple of held melodic bends. Be particularly careful when pitching these, as you’ll need to hold them there. The same goes for the following bar just before the staccato triplets.

We finish with the busiest passage of all, but it’s all taken from shapes 1 and 5 of the C# minor pentatonic, so we’re on familiar ground. Just take your time and don’t feel you need to duplicate exactly what is being played here. The vibe is what matters most.

Hear it here

Pink floyd – the dark side of the moon.

Perhaps an obvious choice, but it would be difficult to justify not citing this one. Continuing somewhat from where 1971’s Meddle left off, David is still using a very Hendrix-influenced fuzz sound, though he’s already refining it with the liberal use of a Binson Echorec.

Check out his searing solo on Time , contrasting approaches on Money and some funky rhythmic Uni-Vibe (set to its fastest setting) on Any Colour You Like .

Pink Floyd – The Wall

Though tensions were apparently developing in the band by this point, it contains some of David’s finest recorded moments with a respectful nod to the Wish You Were Here album.

Check out In the Flesh? just to hear the power of his Strat tone, then The Thin Ice for a great example of how refined his lead tone had become at this point. Inevitably, we must mention the great Comfortably Numb , but do also check out the break on Young Lust .

David Gilmour – On An Island

This solo album is absolutely full of classic Gilmour solos. Particular highlights are the two contrasting solos on the title track, but be sure to listen to The Blue for some very wacky moments courtesy of the DigiTech Whammy pedal.

Take A Breath features a satisfying amount of aggression, and honourable mention should go to the almost hi-fi clean soloing on the final track Where We Start . Having an orchestra to back you probably helps with the inspiration!
