September 2018 - "I wanted to tell you that I see my advertising in your Go East of Edmonton magazine as a really successful marketing strategy. We had a great summer! We had quite a few guests this summer who said the choice not only to come to Cold Lake but also to stay at Waterfront Harbour B&B was because of your magazine. Also, we have had local families here who have told us that they just weren’t aware of some of the places, things and events in Alberta that they saw advertised in your magazine. They made small little trips to various communities in Alberta throughout the summer because of reading your magazine. I am hearing that Albertans want a different destination to the usual trips of Jasper and Banff. They state those areas have too many people and too much traffic to enjoy as a stress free vacation. That is a real positive for us out here! Thank you! In regard to having the magazine, I gave out some but not a lot as they seemed to have picked them up elsewhere! Thanks again! Waterfront Harbour Bed & Breakfast, Cold Lake, Alberta

September 2018 - "Thanks for all your hard work. I am talking up Go East all I can. Money well spent for the M.D. We see the results on our web page. And our businesses are happy with the results. All I can see is growth. The numbers prove that Go East is the one to go with." MD Bonnyville, Alberta

September 2018 - "We used to interview young adults who didn’t have a clue of anything out of the city. Your website is helping tremendously to change that. Lots of positive reasons to take a drive. For the rest of us small town folk, we get reinforcement about the reasons we are so proud to come from that life." Facebook Follower

September 2018 - "I certainly enjoyed following Go EAST on Facebook this summer. It was neat to see all of the locally owned and operated business and services. We have such a great province. So much value in going east for a vacation. I spoke to many people who already had a copy so word was definitely getting out there." Facebook Follower

September 2018 - "Great magazine for everything to see and do in the region! And great people!", Boom 95.3 Cold Lake, Alberta

September 2018 - A Vegreville town councillor told us of a couple from South Carolina, USA, that he talked to at the Vegreville Pysanka Park who CHANGED their trip from going to the mountains to Going East. ALL because they seen the printed copy of Go East of Edmonton Travel Guide!! They said they were in Edmonton and decided that they changed plans because there was lots to see and do in communities East of Edmonton. Town of Vegreville, Alberta

September 2018 - "We have no referrals from other Travel or Tourism Alberta websites. But we have referrals from Go East. The difference is stark. Go East is working for the municipalities and businesses, while other Tourism initiatives are not. We already budgeted for advertising in Go East and we are cancelling other tourism promotions cause they have no data or no results. You have some pretty powerful testimonials and metrics." From numerous Local Communities.

Edmonton, Canada: The Ultimate Travel Guide

Edmonton Canada

Find out the top things to do in Edmonton, where to stay, where to eat and drink, and some insider information to help you plan your dream trip to this cool city in Alberta, Canada.

When it comes to popular destinations in Canada, the same few come up time and time again. Banff and Jasper National Parks for their scenery, Whistler for skiing, and Vancouver and Toronto for being super cool cities.

Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton

Recently I visited Edmonton in Alberta, and can see plenty of reasons why it’s worthy of being added to the hot list! It’s fun, quirky, creative, buzzy and has an AWESOME food scene .

If you’re heading to Alberta to explore the stunning Rockies in Jasper or Banff , checking out Athabasca Glacier or Lake Louise, then consider visiting Edmonton too. It’s a worthy addition to any Alberta itinerary.

So time to reveal why underrated Edmonton is a worthy addition to your Canadian bucket list!

Views of Edmonton

Is Edmonton Worth Visiting?

Edmonton is one of Canada’s fastest growing cities, beating the likes of Vancouver and Toronto. It’s got plenty to see and do, diverse scenery and the most sunny days in the whole of the country. Yes, along with Calgary, Edmonton is the sunniest place in Canada – reason enough to visit in my opinion!

Edmonton city centre brings industry, culture, skyscrapers, plenty of shops and restaurants and the downtown buzz that city-lovers enjoy.

Edmonton city centre, Canada

But nature is so close too. The peaceful Elk Island National Park is under 30 minutes drive from the city, and is home to so much wildlife. Oh and the North Saskatchewan River Valley give you that feeling of countryside, right in the city itself.

It’s the food scene that was the huge draw for me. Friends in other parts of Canada had mentioned it before my trip. Sure enough, every night I enjoyed a different cuisine in some of the city’s coolest, most creative restaurants and bars.

Weather In Edmonton

The weather plays a huge part in Canadian holidays, and that’s no different in Edmonton! Winter sees lows in the -30s (ouch!) accompanied by several feet of snow, and plenty of icy activities.

Meanwhile summer brings lovely long days, plenty of sunshine (well this is one of the sunniest places in Canada!) and tonnes of arts, music and food festivals. The Edmonton International Fringe Festival is the largest in North America with over 850,000 people attending last year! It’s comparable to ours in Edinburgh, showcasing the best in comedy, theatre and more.

Where Is Edmonton, Canada?

Edmonton isn’t the first place that comes to mind for a holiday in Alberta, with most heading to Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise to enjoy the stunning Rockies. But there are plenty of great things to do in Edmonton too. When I visited, I travelled with Icelandair from London Gatwick to Reykjavik (Iceland), and then on to Edmonton.

Meanwhile, WestJet has twice-weekly flights non-stop direct from London Gatwick to Edmonton .

Edmonton airport is around 25 minutes from the city centre. Taxis aren’t too pricey in the city, and there is a decent public transport network. If you want to venture outside of the city to explore the national parks, consider hiring a car.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Edmonton, Canada?

This is a tricky one! As mentioned above, this is a city that dramatically changes from winter to summer. I visited in summer and after hearing about the extreme cold (lows in the -30s) and many feet of snow, I just don’t know how I’d cope. However, I spotted the guys from Hand Luggage Only visited in winter and it looks absolutely stunning (you can see what they got up to here ).

I loved that in June it was light until around 11pm at night and the temperatures were comfortably warm. I guess the nice thing with a destination like this, is that you could return again at a different time of year and have a totally different experience. And with that, let’s find out what there is to do.

Edmonton, Canada: Things To Do

I was really impressed with how much there was to do in Edmonton in the summer. From exploring the food scene on a food tour, to riding the historic streetcar, to shopping in the super mall and exploring the nature in Elk Island National Park, you’re bound to find something you enjoy.

There are also tonnes of events and festivals held in the city each summer, including  Edmonton Pride (June), Edmonton International Jazz Festival (June), Edmonton Folk Music Festival (August), The Edmonton International Fringe (August) and The Big Valley Jamboree (August).

Muttart Conservatory – I loved exploring these giant pyramid-shaped greenhouses. Not only is the architecture intriguing, but also inside are plants from across the globe. They run special events inside and theme one of the pyramids from time to time. When I visited it was as a Shakespearean theme.

The Muttart Conservatory, Edmonton

Edmonton Food Tour – Wondering what to do in Edmonton if you’re a total foodie like me?! How about learning history of Edmonton by eating your way around it! With a huge influx of Ukrainians in the early 20 th century, we enjoyed a big brunch of eastern European delicacies before venturing out to explore the 104 th  Street Market.

It was interesting to meet local producers and sample everything from gyozas and meat pies to indulgent salted caramels. It was refreshing to see actual Edmontonians on the tour too. They were just as keen as us to know more about where their food came from and pick up tips for places to visit in the city.

River Valley Parks – Edmonton seems to beat the rest of the country in plenty of areas… and here’s another! The city is home to the largest urban park in Canada, with more than 160 km of paths! Impressive huh? No trip to Edmonton is complete without a walk through the forests along the North Saskatchewan River Valley. I loved it, especially with views like this to enjoy!

Hop On A Segway – And a Segway tour is a really fun way to explore not only the River Valley… but also the rest of Edmonton, without exhausting yourself!

Street Art – I always love snapping pics of street art and am fascinated by the different pieces I find as I travel the world. There were some great artworks in Edmonton, particularly in Old Strathcona around Whyte Avenue.

A beautiful mural in Edmonton, Canada

High Level Bridge Streetcar – Several streetcars transported Edmontonians around the city between 1908 and the 1950s. It’s a lovely experience to pay a few $ and take the trip over the North Saskatchewan River. The interior is just as it would have been, with vintage posters for brands like Heinz.

Shopping – On my Edmonton holiday I shopped my way along Whyte Avenue and loved the mix of cute boutiques, vintage stores and quirky gift shops. I was visiting with one of my fave blogger pals Emily and we were SO excited to discover Gummi Boutique – an incredible sweet store with floor-to-ceiling displays of different sugary treats!

Elk Island National Park – This is the closest national park to Edmonton, and a wonderful escape from city life. It’s flat, tranquil and home to bison, elk, beavers and more than 250 species of bird. In the summer you can kayak and stand up paddleboard on Astotin Lake.

Watching sunset over the lake was totally magical, and I’ve been told you can sometimes catch the northern lights there. Find out all about visiting in Emily’s blog here: Discover Elk Island National Park In Edmonton

Exploring Elk Island National Park, Canada

West Edmonton Mall – I couldn’t quite believe that North America’s largest mall is in Edmonton! Pretty random… but along with 800 stores you’ll find a waterpark, ice hockey stadium, cinema, shooting range, hotels and Mindbender – the world’s largest indoor triple-loop rollercoaster! I braved it, and can officially say it was AWESOME! I’d also say that if the weather is bad outside, the West Edmonton Mall is a great place to keep warm and dry!

Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village – If, like me, wandering through stale museums with things in glass boxes bores the socks off you, then don’t worry! This living museum turns back the clock to the 1890s when there was a huge influx of Ukrainians to the region. By chatting to the character actors, eating traditional foods and exploring the unique village, you’ll develop a really good understanding of this big part of Edmonton’s history.

Edmonton, Canada: Where To Eat and Drink

This could take a while as Edmonton’s food scene is top notch, and constantly growing and evolving! I was amazed at how diverse it was. I had days that started with a photogenic brunch, followed by a noodle salad for lunch and then tacos or baos for dinner! I’ll summarise a few of my faves, but for the definitive guide on where to eat in Edmonton check out this post: Best Restaurants In Edmonton, Canada

El Cortez Mexican Kitchen and Tequila Bar – If you’re looking for the best tacos in the city, head to this gothic bar and restaurant! I loved the buzz here, and as the night goes on it’s all about cocktails and DJs.

Baijiu – Super stylish Asian restaurant serving tasty tempura, squidgy baos, spring rolls, grilled fish and more, in the trendy Mercer building. Don’t miss the delicious cocktails too!

Ampersand 27 – Super chic décor (not to mention pretty lights everywhere) and a truly international menu make this a spot well worth checking out.

L ittle Brick Cafe – The best brunch I had in Edmonton! This cute local spot has a chilled out vibe, great coffee and Instagram-worthy brunches.

MEAT – If you’re having a carnivorous day, this is the place for you! It’s man food through and through, serving big sharing platters of ribs, steaks, chicken and sides.

Where To Stay In Edmonton, Canada

oTENTik – I’ve only camped a few times before and was extremely happy to stay in one of these glamping-style cabins in Elk Island National Park. With 3 large squishy beds (you could probably sleep 6), a gas BBQ and a big campfire area, it was a lovely place to round off our time in the national park.

If you’re looking for other cool places to stay, check out my guide to glamping in Alberta – it’s packed full of quirky cabins, unique lodges and treehouses!

An Adventure Hub Plus So Much More: 8 Edmonton Must-Do’s

With a beautiful, lush river valley covering the city and close proximity to one of Canada’s national parks, Edmonton is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those who love to stay active.

But even if your idea of being “outdoorsy” is being outside on a patio with a drink — or some ice cream — in hand, Edmonton is great for that, too. Whether you want to eat, drink, enjoy live music, explore the great outdoors or shop, Edmonton has a number of experiences for all travelers.

Explore the River Valley

At 22 times the size of New York City’s Central Park, Edmonton’s stunning river valley has plenty of access points, paved pathways and amenities throughout. From downtown Edmonton you can take the funicular for free into the river valley and then explore via foot or bike.

Book a tour with River Valley Adventure Co. , and hop aboard a Segway for a guided group tour of some of the river valley’s most scenic spots. Head to the Keillor Point viewing area for a bird’s-eye view of the expansive river valley.

Rent a canoe or kayak and get a tour of the river valley by paddling through the North Saskatchewan River. If you’re looking for a more leisurely float down the river, book a ticket aboard the Edmonton Riverboat .

Relax on a Patio with Food and Drinks

beer glasses on a sampling tray

When the sun is shining, there’s nothing like enjoying food and drinks on a patio. Choose from 145 beers at Craft Beer Market to sip on the rooftop patio. Alchemy ‘s huge fifth-floor patio has sweeping views of downtown and is heated on cooler evenings; head up there to enjoy a unique cocktail

In Old Strathcona, MKT has one of the most popular patios in town — snag a seat and enjoy the people-watching while sipping a cold beer and eating pub fare. The hidden backyard patio at El Cortez Mexican restaurant and tequila bar is a fun spot to enjoy tacos and sip margaritas.

Immerse Yourself in a Festival

There’s a reason Edmonton is often referred to as “festival city.” Edmonton hosts unique festivals year-round, but things really pick up in the spring and summer months when not a weekend goes by without a festival.

Put down your tarp on the hillside and enjoy live music and good vibes at Edmonton Folk Music Festival . Pick from hundreds of plays at dozens of venues during Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival , and enjoy the beer gardens, food trucks and other activities between shows.

Other highlights include K-Days carnival, the Taste of Edmonton food and drink sampling event, and The Works Art & Design Festival .

Enjoy Outdoor Attractions

undefined

Spend some time up close to more than 350 animals — including adorable red pandas — at Edmonton Valley Zoo . Climb and swing your way through more than 100 activities at the Snow Valley Aerial Park .

Take a short drive out to Jurassic Forest and stroll through a picturesque boreal forest to view realistic dinosaur animatronics. Stroll the beautiful, landscaped grounds at the Alberta Legislature — it’s even more picturesque when it’s lit up at night.

Retail Therapy

It’s almost impossible to visit Edmonton and not make a plan to visit West Edmonton Mall . Besides shopping at hundreds of retailers, visits to Galaxyland amusement park and World Waterpark are a must.

Shop for unique, locally created products (they make great souvenirs!) at TIX on the Square , Majesty and Friends , Glass Bookshop and The Makers Keep . If you’re a Wes Anderson fan, peek into The Prints and the Paper .

Locally Made Ice Cream

undefined

Hidden down an alley just off trendy Whyte Avenue is Made by Marcus , featuring unique sweet and savory flavors made from natural ingredients. At Yelo’d you’ll find soft serve ice cream made with Filipino flavors like ube and mango.

Kind Ice Cream scoops up hard ice cream in familiar favorites like salted caramel and strawberry and always has a few vegan flavors to pick from.

Take a Road Trip to Elk Island National Park

Just a 45-minute drive from downtown Edmonton is Elk Island National Park , which is full of outdoor adventures and cultural activities. Get active with hiking, boating and cycling, plus keep an eye out for wildlife like elk, porcupine and bison.

As a Dark Sky Preserve, Elk Island is a great spot for stargazing and, occasionally, seeing the aurora borealis (northern lights).

Take a Distillery Tour

Edmonton is home to three craft distilleries that offer tours and tastings of their spirits. At Hansen Distillery you’ll learn about a family history of moonshining and get to sample a variety of ryes, vodkas, gins, cream liqueurs and moonshines. Be sure to stay for one of their innovative cocktails in their tasting room.

Strathcona Spirits is the smallest (and cutest) distillery in North America and makes liquors with locally grown herbs and botanicals. Rig Hand Distillery makes dozens of varieties of liquors using entirely locally grown ingredients, including a unique sugar beet “rum.”

Edmonton travel guide

Oil deals are made at the head offices in Calgary; the actual work of turning black gold into commodities such as gasoline and diesel occurs in Edmonton, the capital and geographic heart of the province. The city flexes its industrial muscle along Refinery Row, a glittering galaxy of tubes, giant storage tanks, and gas flares that light up the night sky like a scene from a science-fiction movie.

But Edmonton is no blue-collar town. In fact, it seems more sophisticated in some ways than its southern rival, where the backyard mountains attract lots of outdoors types more interested in backpacking than Bach. Seat of provincial government and home of the University of Alberta, Edmonton has opera and classical ballet companies, a symphony orchestra, and several professional theatre groups. Crystal chandeliers even adorn a couple of its rapid transit stations.

After the Edmonton Oilers beat the Florida Panthers 5-3 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday , Game 6 ticket prices skyrocketed by nearly 97 per cent in the hours since Panthers GM Bill Zito threw a water bottle in anger , according to new data from Casino.org .

Stanley Cup Final: Ticket prices jump by 97% after Oilers force Panthers to Edmonton for Game 6 Back to video

The average Game 6 ticket now costs $9,203.83 on SeatGeek , Casino.org said. Oilers fans are willing to spend a maximum of $686.87 on a Stanley Cup ticket, meaning a Game 6 seat is 1,240 per cent above budget, Casino.org said.

The cheapest Game 6 tickets available start at $1,896 — 176 per cent above the surveyed fans’ budgets. The most expensive ticket is $87,452, according to Casino.org.

The most surprising thing was how fast ticket prices updated overnight, Rhiannon O’Donohoe, digital public relations specialist with Casino.org, told Postmedia Wednesday.

“Obviously, nobody knew if Game 6 was going to happen … but then finding out that it increased by almost 100 per cent overnight, I was like, ‘Oh my God, people really want to go but also really want to make money off of it too,'” she said, noting prices are higher this year compared to last.

“I think because the Stanley Cup’s going to make history either way for either team, the prices are soaring right now … because people want to witness this in person.”

The nationwide study asked 1,000 Oilers fans — with an average age of 41 — one simple question on Monday: how much are you willing to spend to attend a Stanley Cup game?

“The range is about $100 to $1,000, typically,” O’Donohoe said, “but I saw one fan who’s willing to spend $4,000. One was willing to spend $5,000 — so, dedication.”

Inclusion Alberta’s Game 6 ticket raffle sold out — reaching its $20,000 goal — soon after launching Wednesday.

You can still experience the decibel-busting atmosphere without the price tag in Edmonton’s Moss Pit (officially called the Ford Tailgate Party in ICE District Plaza) for Game 6 on Friday.

McDavid and the Oilers drag Panthers back to Edmonton for a Stanley Cup Final Game 6

Connor McDavid wanted the Edmonton Oilers to drag the Florida Panthers back to Alberta, then he made sure that happened.

McDavid scored twice, including the empty-netter to seal it, and set up two goals to keep the Stanley Cup Final going with a 5-3 victory in Game 5 Tuesday night — avoiding elimination and sending the series all the way back across North America. Game 6 is Friday in Edmonton.

“Drag them back to Alberta” became the Oilers' rallying cry, started by McDavid after he led the way in avoiding a sweep and echoed by Connor Brown hours before puck drop in Sunrise. The other Connor scored short-handed five minutes in after Stuart Skinner made several big-time saves on the first few shifts as the Panthers opened with a strong push in their second chance to hoist the Cup.

That will have to wait thanks to the Edmonton power play that was 0 for the series at 5 on 4 building the lead with goals by Zach Hyman and Corey Perry, each one assisted on by McDavid. Hyman's goal was his NHL postseason-leading 15th.

Retired referee Kerry Fraser, who worked final 12 times during his lengthy career, posted on social media, “Connor McDavid reminds me of how Mark Messier could take over a playoff game and ultimately a series.” Fraser referenced Messier carrying the Oilers to the Cup in 1990 — the franchise's last championship, which capped that dynasty's run of five in seven years.

McDavid, who now has 42 points in this postseason, did not do the dragging by himself.

Brown’s goal made Edmonton the first time since the 1991 Pittsburgh Penguins (Mario Lemieux and Bob Errey) to score short-handed in back-to-back games in the final. And Skinner, whose play coming into the series looked like the biggest uncertainty, stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced.

Meanwhile, the Oilers again got to Sergei Bobrovsky, three nights after chasing the him from Game 4 midway through an 8-1 rout . McDavid’s goal in particular Tuesday night from a tight angle, a soft one to give up by the goaltender everyone just calls “Bob.”

More shaky Bobrovsky when the series shifts back to Edmonton could set the stage for a comeback not seen in more than 80 years. The Oilers became just the third team in Cup final history and first since New Jersey in 2012 to fall behind 3-0 and win the next two games, and the only team to come all the way back to win it all was the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs .

Edmonton staves off elimination again with Stanley Cup Final Game 5 win over Florida

Edmonton left wing Zach Hyman celebrates after scoring a goal in the second period of Game 5.

A slow start. Some bad decisions. A frantic but futile finish. A postgame vow that things will get better. The Florida Panthers have waited forever to call themselves champions, a wait that will now last at least a few more days.

And another long flight to Alberta awaits — with this Stanley Cup Final suddenly looking very tight.

The Panthers gave up two power-play goals and a shorthanded score, got into a 3-0 hole before trying to rally and wound up falling 5-3 to the Edmonton Oilers in Game 5 of the title series on Tuesday night. It was the second consecutive time Florida was thwarted in a chance to win the Cup, after an 8-1 embarrassment in Edmonton over the weekend.

Game 6 is there on Friday night.

“I’m not pumping tires. I’m not rubbing backs. I don’t think we need that at all,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. “Everybody feels probably exactly the way I do right now. I’m not feeling deflated. Neither’s the hockey team. They’re not feeling deflated. Little grumpy.”

Maybe a lot grumpy.

“We’re going to turn the page,” forward Evan Rodrigues said. “We’re going to learn from this one.”

Rodrigues and Matthew Tkachuk each had a goal and an assist for Florida, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored for the Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 19 shots for Florida, which will see its 30-years-and-counting wait for the franchise’s first Stanley Cup title last at least three more days.

“We get another crack at it on Friday,” Tkachuk said.

Connor McDavid had two goals and two assists to become the first player in NHL history to have back-to-back four-point games in the Stanley Cup Final, and Evan Bouchard added three assists for Edmonton. Connor Brown, Zach Hyman and Corey Perry also had goals for the Oilers while Stuart Skinner stopped 29 shots.

McDavid said it was a total team effort. It was, but it was also another superhuman effort from McDavid, the game’s best player who is doing things never before done in the title series.

The four points gave McDavid 42 in these playoffs, the fourth-most in a single postseason in NHL history. The only players ahead of him are the ones everyone would expect: Wayne Gretzky had 47 points in 1985, Mario Lemieux had 44 in 1991 and Gretzky had 43 in 1988.

McDavid will have at least one — and, he hopes, two — games to add to that total. If there is a Game 7, it’ll be in Sunrise on Monday night.

“Any time you’re in the same realm as those two, it’s always a good thing,” McDavid said.

It was the first time in Panthers history that they played a home game with a chance to win the Cup. Another sellout crowd came, some of the paying more than $1,000 apiece for tickets on the secondary market — the crowd pushing Florida’s total attendance for the season over 1 million for the first time.

They came to see the trophy.

The Oilers just wouldn’t let it happen. And when it was over, Tkachuk was asked if the Panthers feel the pressure.

“No. No. No,” Tkachuk said. “It’s not an elimination game for us. We’re going up there, we have a 3-2 series lead, just got to take care of business like we did in Game 3.”

Connor McDavid, approaching Gretzky heights, drags the Stanley Cup finals back to Edmonton for Game 6

Connor McDavid wanted the Edmonton Oilers to drag the Florida Panthers back to Alberta, then he did everything in his power to make that happen.

McDavid scored twice, including the empty-netter to seal it, and set up two goals to keep the Stanley Cup Final going with a 5-3 victory in Game 5 Tuesday night — avoiding elimination and sending the series all the way back across North America. Game 6 is Friday in Edmonton.

“I love playing in the playoffs,” McDavid said. “I love playing with this group. It’s been a fun ride, and we’re glad it’s going to go one more day. But that’s all we’ve earned here: Another day, another flight. We’ll be ready to go in Edmonton on Friday.”

With back-to-back four-point performances, McDavid joined Wayne Gretzky in 1985 as the only players to have four or more in two games of a final. His eight over this span are the most for a player in consecutive games for a team on the brink.

“Connor doing Connor things,” said linemate Zach Hyman, who scored his playoff-leading 15th goal with an assist from McDavid. “That’s what makes him special. He’s able to elevate his game at the most important time, the biggest reason why we’ve come so far. We’re not here without him. He continues to drive the bus.”

“Drag them back to Alberta” became the Oilers’ rallying cry, started by McDavid after he led the way in avoiding a sweep and echoed by Connor Brown hours before puck drop in Sunrise. Brown, the other Connor, scored short-handed five minutes in after Stuart Skinner made several big-time saves on the first few shifts as the Panthers opened with a strong push in their second chance to hoist the Cup.

That will have to wait thanks to the Edmonton power play that was 0 for the series at 5 on 4 building the lead with goals by Hyman and Corey Perry, each one assisted on by McDavid.

“He puts this team on his back,” Perry said. “When we’re against the wall, he puts us on his back and he plays. You see why he is the best player.”

Retired referee Kerry Fraser, who worked the final 12 times during his lengthy career, posted on social media, “Connor McDavid reminds me of how Mark Messier could take over a playoff game and ultimately a series.” Fraser referenced Messier carrying the Oilers to the Cup in 1990 — the franchise’s last championship, which capped that dynasty’s run of five in seven years.

McDavid now has 42 points on this run. Only Gretzky (twice) and Mario Lemieux have more in a single postseason. His 42nd into the empty net with 19 seconds left set off the Oilers’ victory song, “La Bamba,” playing all over Edmonton.

“We believe,” fan Trevor Savage said after watching Game 5. “We all knew it was possible. We knew Connor could lead us. We knew the team was going to be ready, and we’re just excited for Game 6 back home.”

McDavid did not do the dragging by himself.

Meanwhile, the Oilers again got to Sergei Bobrovsky, three nights after chasing him from Game 4 midway through an 8-1 rout. McDavid’s goal in particular Tuesday night from a tight angle, a soft one to give up by the goaltender everyone just calls “Bob.”

“It’s been a crazy story this whole year,” Hyman said. “We’ve got to continue to write it. It doesn’t make for a good story unless you finish it.”
