Written by Shandley McMurray Updated Feb 10, 2023

Author Shandley McMurray lived in London and always enjoys her return visits.

Visiting London without shopping is like heading to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower—you're missing the best part! Whether you're a fan of window browsing, or prefer to shop 'til you drop, you can't go wrong with a shopping trip to London.

Shopping on Regent Street in London

That said, we'd suggest setting a budget before leaving home. With so many famous department stores to explore (hello, Harrods and Selfridges ) and a multitude of esteemed luxury boutiques, it's impossible to avoid temptation.

Whether you're hoping to hunt for bargains in a charity shop, or shell out for a designer one-off, you're sure to find the perfect place to practice a little retail therapy. The fact that the city's essentially divided into shopping sections makes it even easier to part with your cash. You could spend an entire day purchasing treats in a bevy of different shops within a 10-block radius.

Pack your reusable shoppers (bags for you, North Americans) and plan your trip with our list of the best places to go shopping in London.

1. Oxford Street

2. bond street, 3. regent street, 4. knightsbridge, 5. carnaby street, 6. king's road, 8. selfridges, 9. belgravia, 10. westfield london, 11. covent garden, 12. savile row, 13. camden market, 14. shoreditch.

Oxford Street

One of the most famous streets in London, Oxford Street is chock-full of shops to suit every taste and budget.

This is arguably the busiest (and best) shopping street in London, so you should be prepared to elbow your way through throngs of people if you visit on a weekend or even a weekday afternoon. Browsing the shops here is one of the best things to do in London.

With plenty of clothing stores to placate your inner fashionista and multiple tech shops, cafés, and restaurants to reward your tastebuds, it's easy to spend an entire day on this one street, although most move on to flex their shopping muscles on nearby Regent Street , but more on that later.

Massimo Dutti , Mango , Warehouse, River Island , and Zara will help modernize your closet. And if you're in the market for new kicks, Timberland , Sketchers , Clarks , NikeTown , or Asics can help. Department stores like John Lewis and Selfridges are major draws, selling everything you never knew you needed.

Primark is a low-cost department store offering cheap wares, ranging from makeup to home goods to super soft pjs. Close to Marble Arch and Hyde Park , it's found at the west end of Oxford Street. Head here early on a weekday, as it can get so packed there's a massive line to get inside.

Bond Street

A shopping trip to Bond Street can put a serious dent in your wallet. It's home to top luxury brands like Cartier , Gucci , Louis Vuitton , and Burberry —you probably won't get out of here without spending at least a couple of hundred quid (a.k.a. pounds).

If you're a fan of upscale wares, hobnobbing with celebrities, and rubbing elbows with some of the world's richest people, this is the place for you. This area consists of both Old Bond Street and New Bond Street and features stores so bright and sparkling, you'd think the sun was actually shining on them.

Speaking of sparkly, Tiffany & Co . has a shop here as well, so if you're looking to really impress your partner, head here for a find you'll both love.

Not a big spender? No worries. It's just as entertaining to window shop in this plush region, and you won't run the risk of later suffering from buyer's guilt.

If you're into even more unusual finds, head to Sotheby's , the oldest auction house in the world , to see what you can pick up.

Harrods

The name Harrods has become synonymous with London. The iconic department store's remarkable façade, dotted with emerald awnings and draped in flags, is impossible to miss. It's easy to see why this has been a beloved city landmark since 1849.

A visit to Harrods is an experience sure to excite all your senses, which is why it is considered one of the best places to shop in London. Whether you're hoping to rub your fingers on luxurious fabrics, buy a collectible toy for the kids, or indulge in luxurious scents, you'll find something to tickle your fancy.

Harrods Christmas Grotto is an experience they'll never forget, and you need to sign up a month or more in advance to ensure a spot. It boasts talking trees and a "train" to the North Pole.

Westfield London

You won't find large shopping malls in London—it's known more for its boutique stores and historic buildings. There's just no space, and to be honest, they'd be considered a blip on the city's beauty. In 2008, London was granted its largest shopping center in White City, which lies in the West end.

Westfield London is huge by UK standards. It's also incredibly modern, bright, shiny, and American-feeling. Big brands like Aldo , Apple , Lacoste , H&M , Tory Burch , and The North Face join the 300 retailers catering to the city's shoppers.

Since it's easy to spend multiple hours here, there are a slew of tasty restaurants, both sit-down and take away, that offer everything from sushi to ice cream to pizza.

Tailor shops along Savile Row

If you've ever wondered where Londoners buy their gorgeous, form-fitting suits, head to Savile Row in Mayfair. The city's hub of custom tailoring, this is the place to go if you're in the market for a bespoke suit. Geared mainly towards men, you'll find a few tailors who will make custom outfits for women as well.

Many of the shops on Savile Row have been in business since the early 1900s, and most are still family-owned. That means they really know how to make a well-designed custom suit. Anderson & Sheppard have been open since 1909, and Bernard Weatherill has been around since 1910. Beating them all on the longevity front is Dege & Skinner , who've been selling suits since 1865.

Among the other high-end luxury suit mavens located on this famous street are Gieves and Hawkes , Henry Poole & Co. , and Richard James .

Closest Tube Stations: Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Green Park

Dresses for sale at the Camden Market

If you're a fan of funky, unique, and interesting finds, head to Camden Market. In addition to handmade candles, soaps, and jewelry, you'll find vintage goods, lighting, children's clothes, T-shirts, souvenirs, hats, bags, and shoes. There are no big box or brand name stores in this neighborhood.

The Modfather is a must if you're in the market for mod gear, while those who are looking to unleash their inner hippie might prefer a visit to hunt for ponchos at Little Kathmandu . Collectif offers fun vintage finds, while Little Rebel Elephant boasts handmade clothes, jewels, and décor you'll cherish for years to come.

Technically a collection of six markets, this vast area is eclectic and lovely, set upon the sparkling water of Camden Lock. Grab a meal from one of the food vendors and eat at one of the outdoor picnic tables, or grab a chair at one of the on-site restaurants. Vegan and gluten-free options abound in this distinct spot.

Closest Tube Stations: Camden Town, Chalk Farm

Brick Lane Market in Shoreditch

Shoreditch is a haven for all things artsy, and it's the neighborhood that many of the city's best designers call home. In addition to a bevy of vintage shops, eclectic boutiques, and galleries, this East London shopping district is packed with cafés and restaurants to tempt your palate.

You'll find everything you never knew you needed in the shops that line this region, including plants at Shrubs & Dubs on Hackney Road, unique clothes in Vintage Basement on Cheshire Street, and everything from sweaters to pacifiers in Luna & Curious on Calvert Avenue.

Shoreditch is also an anchor for some of London's best markets . Tourists can sift through intriguing wares at flea markets, bargain with crafts sellers, or enjoy a curry at the Brick Lane Market . Or, they can head to the Columbia Road Flower Market on Sundays for a cheerful pick-me-up—here you'll find fresh blooms, soaps, candlesticks, cheese, and so much more on offer.

Be prepared if you're visiting on a weekend: Shoreditch has become a bit of a mecca for those enjoying their bachelor or bachelorette parties, so it can get a bit loud.

Waterstones-book-store-piccadilly-shopping-uk

Whether you want to flex your credit card or do a little window shopping, London is a shopper’s paradise. I’ve put together a list of 11 famous must-visit London shopping experiences that attract tourists from around the world. I’ve also included a map for each location.

Jump to section ↓

London shopping

Recognized internationally as one of the world’s most important fashion capitals, London is jam-packed with designer shops, luxury department stores, exclusive shopping streets and famous markets.

11 London shopping streets that are also tourist attractions

1) New Bond Street

For luxury shopping that rivals paris.

New-Bond Street-shopping destinations

New Bond Street is an 800-metre long street in London which links Piccadilly to the famous Oxford Street.

It’s where the rich and famous with expensive and extravagant taste clamour to find a concentration of sophisticated designer shops like Burberry and Hermes, exclusive jewellers like Cartier and Tiffany and high-end art like the kind found at Halcyon Galleries. The infamous Sotheby’s auction house is also located on New Bond Street. ( According to Westminster City Council, Bond Street has the highest density of haute couture stores anywhere in the world. )

In 2017, New Bond Street stole the first-place prize from the Champs Elysées in Paris as the most expensive and sought-after strip of real estate for retailers in Europe. Rents average $1,179 USD per square foot per year on New Bond Street.

Even if you can’t afford it, it’s worth a trip to do a little window shopping.

2) Fortnum & Mason ( Luxury fine foods )

Fortnum-n-Mason-shopping-destination-UK

Known as the best grocery store in England and the official grocer to the royal family for over a century, Fortnum & Mason or  Fortnum’s , as it’s known in the UK, was founded in 1707 as a small grocery store selling quality and exotic foods.

During the Victorian era, it grew and expanded to include homeware, beauty products, clothing and accessories to become what some people say is the world’s first department store.

The Fortnum logo and iconic turquoise packaging are known by everyone in the UK and are somewhat of a status symbol.

Be sure to check out their hampers, which are some of the best in the world and their impressive tea selection.

Located at 181 Piccadilly, St. James’s, London

3) Harrods (the largest department store in the UK)

Harrods--shopping-destination-UK

Charles Henry Harrod founded Harrods in 1849 as a humble grocery store, much like Fortnum & Mason.

Today, Harrods is the largest department store in the UK and represents the height of British luxury.

The store’s motto is “Omnia Omnibus Ubique,” which is Latin for “All things for all people, everywhere,” and it delivers on its promise by providing everything a shopper could ever want, thanks in part to its size…

As the largest, most well-known department store in the UK, Harrods boasts over 1 million square feet of retail space spread over 7 floors and over 330 departments that showcase the best luxury merchandise, from high-end fashion and accessories to the finest homewares and latest technology. There is an acclaimed food hall with nearly 30 restaurants, a toy kingdom for the kids, an Ice cream parlour, a donut shop and more.

Wealthy Egyptian-born Al Fayad, who once owned Harrods, put many of his own personal touches into the building, such as the Egyptian elevator and glittering Egyptian room adorned with several busts of himself. Following the death of Mr. Al Fayad’s son Dodi and Princess Diana in a car crash in Paris, he also created a memorial to the couple in the store.

Plan on spending the whole day and braving the overwhelming crowds of people.

Located on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge, London

4) Selfridges (luxury department store)

The inventor of the modern window displays.

Selfridges-window-displays

Founded in 1908 by Harry Gordon Selfridge, Selfridges’ flagship store located on the famous Oxford Street is another high-end department store in London—the second largest department store in the UK after Harrods.

If you’ve ever caught an episode of the TV drama Mr. Selfridge (which I love), you know all about how this American-born businessman revolutionized British shopping and invented intricate and artistic window displays that all department stores now have adopted.

Located at 400 Oxford St, Marylebone, London

5. Liberty (Tudor-style luxury department store)

Liberty-London-shopping-destination-UK

Liberty department store, founded in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, is one of London’s most traditional-looking department stores—done in the mock Tudor style , also known as half-timbered or “colombage” in French.

When it originally opened, it sold ornaments, fabric and art objects from Japan and the East. Today, Liberty sells luxury goods, including men’s, women’s and children’s fashion, cosmetics and fragrances, jewellery, accessories, homeware, furniture, stationery and gifts.

Located at Great Marlborough Street in the West End of London.

6. Harvey Nichols (Princess Diane used to shop here )

Harvey-Nichols-department-store-shopping-london-uk

Founded in 1831 by Benjamin Harvey, Harvey Nicols was originally opened as a linen shop but expanded over the years to become an upscale department store.

Located just a few blocks from Harrods, some might say that Harvey Nichols is the younger, more fashionable version of the two.

Princess Diana often frequented the 5th-floor restaurant.

Located at 109-125 Knightsbridge, Belgravia, London

7. Mount Street ( Luxury shopping street)

Mount Street-shopping in London UK

Not to be missed when visiting London is Mount Street in London’s affluent Mayfair district.

The street is an aspiring mix of old-world charm and 21st-century niche, luxury, beauty, fashion, art, antiques and exclusive restaurants. It gives Bond Street a run for London’s luxury retail supremacy.

Prestigious brands that call Mount Street home include Balenciaga London, Lanvin Ladies Boutique, Goyard, Moynat, Marc Jacobs,  Oscar de la Renta, Stephen Webster (jeweller shop), and niche retailers like antique and cigar shops. There’s even a Porsche showroom.

Located at Mount Street in London

8. Saville Row (a street lined with stores f or finely tailored suits)

Savile Row-street-bespoke-tailoring-london-UK

If you’re interested in getting something tailored, then head over to Saville Row. A short little street that has become synonymous with good tailoring.

Henry Poole & Co., who is credited as being the founder of Saville Row and its reputation as THE PLACE FOR BESPOKE TAILORING, is also credited with creating the modern Tuxedo in 1864. The shop still exists at No.15!

Bespoke tailoring: clothing cut from a pattern drafted from scratch for the customer. Think of bespoke tailoring as the opposite of off-the-rack ready-to-wear suits.

In 2018, the website GQ British featured the article “Savile Row tailors: the GQ Guide,” which called “London the menswear’s global capital with Savile Row being the most important street in that world because it creates the best suits in this world.”

The street is so legendary for the quality of its tailoring that the Japanese word for a three-piece business suit is “Sabiro,” which is a Japanified way of saying “Savile Row.”

Located at Savile Row, Mayfair, London

9. Waterstones at Picadilly ( For Book Lovers)

Waterstones-book-store-piccadilly-shopping-uk

Waterstones is a British book retailer with over 200 retail outlets. The Waterstones flagship building at Piccadilly is the store to visit, though.

Be prepared to spend the whole day here because the book selection can’t be beaten, and the location is huge. It’s literally an 8 story department store of books —the largest bookstore in Europe.

There are comfortable sofas, an excellent restaurant & café on the 5th floor open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can even enjoy a glass of wine and settle down with a good book.

Located at 203-206 Piccadilly, St. James’s, London

10. Hamley’s ( For Toy store Lovers)

Hamleys-Toy-Store-Regent-St-London-UK

If there were a paradise on earth for kids, it would probably be Hamley’s—the oldest, largest and best-known toy shop in the world. This place makes Toys R Us look like a dump.

Set over 7 floors; it’s considered one of the cities’ top tourist attractions. Entering the store, you will be amazed. There is so much going on on every floor.

There are wonderful toy displays and live toy demonstrations by the staff renowned for their fun, friendly demeanour. There are also themed areas like the Harry Potter-themed area on the lower floor.

What else would you expect from the best toy shop in the world!!

Get there early; the shop fills up fast. And be prepared to spend a lot of money. Most travellers complain that this store is extremely expensive.

Located at 188-196 Regent St, Soho, London

11. Borough Market (Covered outdoor Food Market)

Borough-market-londons-best

This bustling covered market located next to London Bridge is London’s most renowned and oldest food market, dating back to the 12th century.

A visit to the market is like taking a culinary trip around the world, with its fascinating maze of stands, stalls and carts selling anything and everything from all four corners of the earth. From Spanish Tapas and spicy Thai Curry to favourite local dishes, you can’t go wrong here.

There is no smoking allowed, and no dogs are allowed, except for seeing-eye dogs.

Hours of Operation: Open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. On Fridays, the shops close at 6 pm.  (closed on public holidays). On Monday and Tuesday, not all of the traders are present, but still plenty of choices.

Located at 8 Southwark Street, London

In the search for the best bookshop in London, we asked several writers to share their favourite places. From multi-storey shops to small local independents, these are some of the most inspirational and charming places to find books in the capital….your biggest dilemma will be which one to visit first!

Cecil Court Bookshops

The Tourist England Team:

There’s a tiny street in London, a few minutes walk from Trafalgar Square called Cecil Court. This is a paradise for second-hand book lovers, with around eleven (!!)  bookstores on both sides of the street. A treasure trove from a bygone era, this should be the first stop on any serious book lovers itinerary! From here, take a right onto Charring Cross Road. It’s a long street, and there are about eight bookshops, mostly on the left-hand side. This includes Foyles, one of the most famous multi-story bookstores in the world.

the London review bookshop:

Unique bookshops in London

London Bookshop Review

Abegail from The Poetry Shed :

“So much more than just a bookshop, the London Review Bookshop stimulates all the senses.  I love losing myself in there, drifting into the solitary calmness you find when you ease open a brand-new book. Their shelves are so well organised it’s easy to navigate from contemporary poetry and fiction to their wide range of non-fiction… then of course there’s the Cake Shop for a catch-up chat with friends… and the fabulous evening literary events… It’s not “just” a bookshop, it’s the heart of Bloomsbury.”

Tourist England top tip: This little “pocket” of London by the side of the British Museum have about eight bookstores, including on Bloomsbury Street and Great Russell Street.

Address:  14 Bury Place, Bloomsbury, London, WC1A 2JL Nearest Underground Station:  Holborn or Tottenham Court Road

Daunt Books in Marylebone

Daunt Books in Marylebone

Merilyn   from Books Unpacked :

“Daunt Books for Travellers is so, so much more. The Marylebone shop especially is an aesthetic delight, thousands of well-chosen books in an Edwardian restoration with soaring windows, oak balustrades, and shelves. Not only travel guides, but literary travel writing, arranged by country (the way we travel!). The best fiction and nonfiction, too, plus a publishing arm bringing back classics by Jamaica Kincaid, MFK Fisher, John McPhee, Saki, and more. Staff are savvy and kind, making every visit feel like a voyage of discovery.”

Address : 83 Marylebone High Street, London W1U 4QW Nearest Underground Station:  Baker Street or Bond Street

Unique bookshops in London

Stanfords bookshop

Rohan from Travels of a Bookpacker :

“As a book lover and an avid traveller, Stanfords is my idea of heaven on earth. The world’s largest map and travel bookshop covers three storeys of anything you can imagine related to travel and books. Travel guides, journals, travel writing, gifts and of course an entire floor dedicated to maps and globes. There’s also a cafe if you need to recharge during your visit. Heywood Hill:

Unique bookshops in London

Heywood Hill

Dane from Social Bookshelves :

“I’d have to recommend Heywood Hill in Mayfair. It’s a delightful little bookshop that’s been there since the 1930s and a blogger friend of mine, Eleanor Franzen from Elle Thinks , is lucky enough to work there. They sell a mixture of old and new books and also offer subscription deals. Eleanor has great taste and the bookshop itself is stunning with something for literally everyone, so be sure to stop by and say hello if you get a chance.”

Any Amount of Books

Daniel from The Reader is Warned :

“My Favourite bookshop in London is the inimitable Any Amount of Books , a wistful paradise of second-hand wonders. The staff are always welcoming and the shop is restocked daily so there is always something special to be found. Upstairs has the expensive and newer items, but the basement is where the real gems are. Three rooms of books stacked floor to ceiling, with that rich scent of time and forgotten history wafting throughout. I always leave here with a vintage treasure.”

A Historic Department Store in England Was Just Transformed Into a Chic Hotel With 101 Suites and a Rooftop Bar

The iconic Boswells is now The Store, a 101-key hotel which opened in Oxford in May.

england tourist stores

Adam Lynk/Courtesy of The Store

Boswells, Oxford's historic family-run department store dating back 280 years, has been transformed into a chic luxury hotel, which made its debut on May 14.

Spread over seven stories, the 101-room property has two interconnected buildings on Broad Street. It pampers guests to a range of modern facilities like a spa, a rooftop bar, a restaurant, and two bars, all largely influenced by the buildings' historic past and surroundings.

Conceived by Reef Group and EQ Group, The Store's interior design hints at Boswells by combining original features with modern interpretations. For example, the skylights from the store were recycled as flooring for the restaurant; the open-floor design is divided into smaller spaces with a distinct feel similar to a department store; and the signature scent is inspired by the store's lobby, blending leathery notes, sandalwood, and musk. Travelers will also find a lot of local references throughout the property, such as custom patterns and furniture that draw on Oxford's rich history and beautiful cityscape.

The rooms are a harmonious blend of timeless aesthetics and bold touches, such as velvet headboards and paneled walls, while oversized windows allow lush city views to peek in.

At the signature restaurant, Treadwell, guests can dine on "untraditionally British" cuisine, like creamy butter chicken curry with chili-infused potatoes and makhani jus. The eatery's name and its dining concept of offering British classics with a playful twist were inspired by Treadwell's Passage, a narrow street infamous for its dodgy reputation, which eventually became a part of Boswells.

The hotel is home to two bars. There's a brightly lit lobby-level space with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on Broad Street. There's also a chic rooftop terrace with stunning city views and a very extensive menu of handcrafted cocktails that nod to the building's past and Oxford's history and most prominent characters.

Lastly, guests can escape the hustle and bustle of the city at the spa, which boasts four treatment rooms, a steam room, a sauna, and a relaxation lounge. The hotel has partnered with British skincare brand Oskia for a number of face and body therapies.

You can learn more or book your stay at The Store on thestoreoxford.com .

The UK’s ‘town from the past’ opens several new attractions – with a bar, a toy shop, record store and retro cinema

ONE of the country's best-loved historical attractions has got a whole host of new features opening up this summer.

There are plenty of places across the country where people can get a taste of what life in the UK would have been like in the past .

A new toy shop is part of the offerings at Beamish museum

However, few places do it as well as Beamish in County Durham .

The open air museum tells the story of life in the North East from as far back as the 1820s, all the way through to post-war Britain.

The site has an old fashioned pit village, a 1900s town, a farm from the 1940s, all with working shops, bars, businesses and even a fair, recreating life from the past.

However, it has recently been working on a new 1950s town, with parts of it already open to the public.

And from the start of next month, several exciting new additions will also be available for visitors to explore to learn more about the time period in the country just after the second world war.

They include a toy shop, where visitors can see toys on display from the museum’s collection, see a dolls’ hospital and purchase 1950s-style toys.

A new record store has been added to the site, complete with booths where guests can listen to 1950s tunes as they take in the surroundings of the shop, recreated to look as it would've more than 70 years ago.

A radio rentals shop is also found beneath the record store, showing off the greatest advances in technology from the 1950s, including televisions, radios and other electrical appliances from the decade.

However, the best place to see what audio visual entertainment would have been like in those days is the retro cinema, which has been recreated to look exactly like the Grand from Ryhope in Sunderland .

Beamish visitors will be able to watch Pathé News reels, adverts and films from the 50s in the surroundings of the impressive theatre , which contains some of the original parts of the venue it's based on.

The Grand was a hugely popular cinema during the 1950s before it was repurposed as a bingo hall.

The original building underwent a full architectural survey to assess which materials could be salvaged and re-used.

Any such parts and features have incorporated into the cinema at Beamish, providing an extra layer of authenticity.

The cinema and the new features, which also include a milk bar, will be open to the public from July 6.

Iron Bridge Gorge

england tourist stores

Another place to sample life in the past in the UK is at Iron Bridge Gorge in Shropshire, which I was lucky enough to visit last year.

I found myself standing in front of a Victorian blacksmith's hut, making way for a horse and carriage, feeling very much like I was in the late 1800s.

Its Blists Hill site offers a truly immersive experience, that lets people get a pretty good understanding of how life would have been more than 100 years ago.

The living town invites visitors to "step back and experience the sights, sounds and smells of Victorian life" through recreated buildings and staff dressed up in authentic outfits that would've been worn during the time.

The experience became all the more enveloping in places like the pub, the confectioners and the chip shop, where products can be bought and enjoyed on-site.

Away from the town centre, the village green provides more insight into Victorian life, with a fairground in operation.

Simple rides, coconut shys and dart games are accompanied by traditional fairground organ music that can be heard far and wide.

The well created exhibitions and the ardent members of staff really breathe life into their surroundings and make you feel like you're witnessing a day in the life of a real Victorian town.

So much so that it felt strange walking through the exit and getting into my car and driving off back to modern life when it was sadly time to leave.

A single entrance ticket to Blists Hill Victorian town costs £23.50 for adults and £14 for children and students.

However, there are other new attractions that have already opened at the museum, including a new pub and place to eat.

The new Drovers Tavern in the 1820s part of Beamish aims to tell the story of drovers who walked hundreds of miles moving livestock and carrying goods across the country.

On their journeys, they would often stop off at taverns, like the one that has been created at Beamish .

Guests can pop in and sample some of the food, and the booze, that they would have sampled while on their arduous journeys.

The tavern’s menu is is inspired by popular Georgian food and drinks, including potted ham, rarebit, soup, stew and salmagundi (a Georgian salad).

Meanwhile, at a new pottery exhibit, visitors will be able to learn traditional pottery skills, while also having a go at making some of their own pots.

Rhiannon Hiles, Beamish’s Chief Executive, described the new additions as "a major moment in the museum’s history ".

She said in a press release: “Our Remaking Beamish project is the biggest capital development in Beamish’s history and has brought many new experiences and co-curated stories to the museum.

“At Beamish, we welcome over 800,000 visitors a year from across the UK and the world and we can’t wait for everyone to experience these fantastic new additions."

Entry to Beamish costs £27.95 for adults and £17.25 for children, but visitors can re-use their tickets for free as often as they like for a whole year.

A guide to the very best shopping in Moscow

Sep 17, 2019 • 5 min read

While shopping in GUM department store be sure to check out its famous glass roof © Popova Valeriya / Shutterstock

Shopping in Moscow can be quite a daunting experience – you can walk for miles without finding anything but mass-market brands and overpriced boutiques. But, if you do it right, it can also be quite fun. Here are our top tips on how to get the most out of your shopping trip in Moscow.

An interior view of a wide open mall, with a domed glass roof above.

Shopping malls

There are many shopping malls all around Moscow, but there three that double as bona fide tourist attractions: GUM, TsUM and Detsky Mir, all within walking distance from each other. GUM is one of the oldest department stores in the country. It’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.  Today it serves as a high-class shopping mall. There are plenty of luxury shops, a supermarket that sells lots of signature Russian goods and several places to eat. Head to the more expensive  Bosco Cafe with a Kremlin view or, for a budget option, try the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 . GUM also occasionally hosts contemporary art exhibitions in one of its three main aisles.

The Red Square and beyond: a guide to Moscow’s neighbourhoods

TsUM  is another shopping mall from the pre-revolutionary times. It’s the most luxurious store in the city, famous for its paper bags that many Muscovites carry around or post pictures of on Instagram to let everyone know they shop there. Full of haute couture boutiques, TsUM also has a rooftop restaurant Buro , frequented by Russian celebrities. Tsentralny Detsky Mir  children's store is perfect if you are looking for a gift for a kid or want to check out its awesome viewing platform with good views over central Moscow. At just R50 per ticket it’s a steal.

Food stalls and markets

There are two food markets that are worth checking out in Moscow.  Danilovsky Market  became the trailblazer of Moscow’s foodie revolution when it got an uplift in 2017. As well as many trendy food stalls, the market also hosts lectures, film viewing and even theatre productions, and it recently opened an antiques section. It’s an architectural landmark, a masterpiece of late Soviet modernism that looks like a UFO. Food at  Usachevsky Market  tends to be a bit more pricey and upmarket. Both markets also sell plenty of fresh produce, local cheeses and cured meats.

An outdoor stall selling Russian dolls painted in bright reds and blues, some with recognisable figures on them, such as Donald Trump and Marilyn Monroe

Antiques and flea markets

Shopping can also be a way to get away from the major landmarks and explore some sights off the beaten path. Moscow’s #1 flea market is  Izmailovsky , located in and around the pseudo-historical complex 'Izmailovsky Kremlin' with its colourful walls and domes. Open daily, it’s best to come here on the weekend to catch better deals. Admittedly tacky, Kremlin has a handful of weird museums like the Vodka History Museum or Baba Yaga Museum (Baba Yaga is a Russian fairy tale character). Part of the market had been gentrified into creative cluster Vernissage , with hipster coffee shops, various workshops and Svalka , an enormous two-floor secondhand shop with everything from used books to vintage clothing.

For high-class antiques, rare books and icons head to Antikvarnaya Lavka (Antique Store) just off Bolshaya Nikitskaya street (5 Kalashny Pereulok). Here you can snag a real masterpiece – a painting or a sculpture – but the prices are quite steep.

Four great day trips from Moscow

Russian memorabilia including a picture of politicians Brezhnev and Honecker, three small trucks and a bust of Lenin

If you are looking for a more authentic place with less hustle, one option is the antiques market on the premises of vodka distillery Crystal (4 ul Samokatnaya), which you can reach by taking tram 20 to Samokatnaya ul from the exit of metro Chkalovskaya. The market is located in the basement of one of the red-brick factory buildings. There are plenty of antiques, books and various Soviet-time memorabilia, such as Stalin and Lenin busts. While at Crystal, be sure to check out great works of street art – they are all around the factory premises.

For die-hard antique collectors there’s also a place right outside of Moscow – Novopodrezkovo market (also know as Levsha market). Take a suburban train from Leningradsky station to Novopodrezkovo (approximately half an hour), cross the tracks to the other side and there you’ll find it – a treasure trove of used books, vinyl records, clothing, paintings and antique furniture.

Where to shop for Russian designs

Gosha Rubchinskiy might be the only Russian clothing designer of world renown, especially after his collaboration with Kanye West, but there are many more up-and-coming fashion stars worth checking out. One of the places to do it is KM20 , the place Moscow fashionistas, with streetwear brands from all over the world and a lot of very rare items. There's also one of the best vegetarian cafes in Moscow on second floor.

GUM shopping mall has a two-storey store devoted to Russian designers –  Sektsiya (Section). Section sells products made by 50 Russian brands, from accessories to Heart of Moscow souvenir pins. Plus there’s a bar overlooking the Red Square.

If you are not into high fashion, but still interested in getting a cool outfit with Cyrillic script, check out the creative cluster centred around two abandoned factories: Flakon and Khlebozavod . One of the biggest stores is Zaporozhets Heritage  at Flakon , which sells clothing and accessories styled after various Soviet pop culture icons. The northern part, Khlebozavod, hosts several shops like Yunost  and Khlebny  that take a more punk-rock approach to streetwear. After shopping, have a pint at a great local craft beer bar Svoboda  or a coffee at Floo .

Sputnik 1985 is a Russian clothing brand specialising in hoodies and hats with quotes in Cyrillic and retro prints. The store is located in a courtyard on Pokrovka street (19 Ulitsa Pokrovka).

Windy City Sweets

This beloved neighborhood candy and coffee boutique is co-owned by actors Paul Rudd and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, plus a few other longtime customers, who all stepped in to save the store from closing after the original owner passed suddenly in 2014. As far as the goodies go, expect to find tasty options ranging from classic candy and chocolates to baked goods.

Specialties run the gamut from a variety of chocolate truffles to peanut brittle and salted caramels, all of which guests can watch being made via viewing windows flanking the side of the shop.

Sweet Pete's Candy

No. 3: Sweet Pete's Candy - Jacksonville, Florida

From Pete's Famous Sea Salt Caramels to caramel chocolate apples to an assortment of packaged candies, Sweet Pete's Candy offers quite the variety of sweet treats. Even your dog can enjoy the store's offerings thanks to the dog-safe white chocolate-dipped dog biscuits.

The Taffy Shop

No. 1: The Taffy Shop - Estes Park, Colorado

Since 1935, visitors have popped into The Taffy Shop to watch candymakers create the store's iconic Estes Park Salt Water Taffy. Not only can you get your favorite tried-and-true flavors such as lemon, vanilla, and peppermint, but also daily flavors such as blueberry, chocolate cherry, and orange creamsicle.

Thrift store shopper bought an ‘old-ish’ vase for $3.99. It turned out to be a priceless 2,000-year-old Mayan artifact

It’s the find of the millennium - well, two. It turned out to be much more. The vase dated back 2,000 years, and her

Anna Lee Dozier knack for second-hand shopping near her Washington, DC, home paid off big time. She was in a Maryland thrift store in 2019 and found a vase on the clearance rack for just $3.99.

“I saw this vase, and I assumed it was like a tourist reproduction,” Dozier told The Independent . “It did look old, but I was thinking a 20- or 30-year-old tourist reproduction.”

It turned out to be much more. The vase dates back two millennia. Her thrifty find was, in fact, priceless.

Anna Lee Dozier purchased a priceless ancient Mayan artifact, pictured, at a Maryland thrift store for less than $5.

For five years after finding the vase on the clearance rack, Dozier kept the vase at home, she said, not thinking twice about it until she went on a trip Mexico ’s Museum of Anthropology in January. There, Dozier said she saw vases that reminded her of her thrift store find, so she asked the staff what to do if she might have an artifact.

The museum staff told her to contact the US embassy.

“I came back to DC not thinking it could really be something, and I didn't want to bother the embassy, so I googled some professors who were experts on Mayan or Mexican history,” she told The Independent . When no one responded, Dozier reached out to the embassy, where staff asked her to send detailed pictures of the vase.

A month later, Dozier learned it was a ceremonial urn from the Mayan community dating anywhere from the year 200 to 800.

After learning she had thrifted a priceless, ancient artifact, Dozier was connected with the Cultural Institute of Mexico, where a ceremony was held Monday for the vase’s return. It will now make its way to Mexico’s Museum of Anthropology for analysis.

Dozier, who works as a human rights advocate for Mexico’s Indigenous communities, said she was glad to be a part of the vase’s journey home.

“Human rights extend to culture and history,” Dozier said at the event on Monday.

Dozier isn’t the first to accidentally stumble upon an ancient artifact.

In 2017, an Italian marble expert discovered a 2,000-year-old Roman mosaic was being used as a coffee table in a Manhattan apartment for the last 50 years.

The apartment owners thought nothing of it when they purchased the table from an Italian noble family in the 1960s, they said at the time. It has since been returned to the Italian government.

Manchester Airport has started resuming operations after cancelling all fights from two of its three terminals due to a power cut this morning.

Passengers departing from Terminals 1 and 2 had been told to stay away until further notice after a power outage impacted ‘important systems’.

Now the airport is starting to resume flights this afternoon, but it advised passengers to check with their airlines before travelling to the airport.

The process of resuming operations will continue into the evening, according to the airport, which expects tomorrow’s flights to run as normal.

In a statement, Manchester Airport said: ‘Following the power outage earlier today that caused disruption to Terminals 1 and 2, we are now in the process of resuming operations and expect flights to restart during the remainder of this afternoon and evening.

‘It remains important that passengers check with their airlines before travelling to the airport.

‘We are also working closely with airlines to reschedule cancelled flights in the coming days.

‘Flights scheduled for tomorrow should be unaffected and passengers due to travel should plan to come to the airport as usual.

‘We thank passengers for their patience and our resilience team and customer service colleagues for their hard work.’

Today’s power outage affected the processing of boarding cards and baggage screening, leading to long queues, a backlog at Border Control, and luggage piled up in the airport.

Manchester Airport had initially advised passengers to check with airlines before arriving.

But, despite power being restored, it later urged them to stay away until further notice as only flights for which passengers were already checked-in would be departing.

Some flights arriving at Terminals 1 and 2 have also been diverted due to the chaos caused by the power outage.

But a backlog meant some passengers flew off without their luggage as it had not made it to the planes.

Airlines will organise any onward journey for those whose flights are cancelled.

Terminal 3 has remained running, but passengers flying from there have been warned they might still face delays.

Announcing the cancellation of flights earlier, the airport said: ‘Manchester Airport was affected by a significant power cut in the early hours of this morning.

‘Power has been restored but the outage affected important systems, including the processing of boarding cards and baggage screening, which has caused significant delays, particularly in Terminals 1 and 2.

‘ All flights from Terminals 1 and 2 are being cancelled until further notice and passengers due to travel from those terminals are advised not to come to the airport and to stay in touch with their airlines.

‘Passengers due to fly from Terminal 3 should come to the airport as normal unless advised otherwise by their airline but could be affected by delays.

‘Flights for those passengers already checked-in are departing but are subject to delays. The disruption means some baggage may not be on those flights.

‘We will work with airlines and handling partners to reunite affected passengers with their luggage as soon as possible.

‘Some arriving flights are being diverted to other airports meaning people due to pick passengers up from the airport should check before setting out.

‘We thank passengers for their patience and our resilience team and customer service colleagues for their hard work.

‘We apologise for the inconvenience and are working hard to restore normal service as soon as possible.’

easyJet, which operates flights from terminal one, said there are ‘very long queues’ for security and disruption to hold bag processing, meaning passengers can only board flights with cabin luggage.

It said: ‘Although outside of our control, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience experienced as a result.

‘We are doing all we can and working closely with the airport team to minimise the disruption.’

The disruption comes at the start of the busy summer holiday season at the UK’s third-busiest airport.
