Extreme are a metal band hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, U.S, who formed in 1985. They built a devoted fan following with their raucous mix of glam metal and funk rock, and then went stratospheric in the early 90’s, topping the Billboard charts with their power ballad “More Than Words”.

You know you’ve made it when you create a cliché, and Boston’s very own Extreme are perfect examples of this. The band had their fans back in the day, with some small radio hits and a decent selling debut album. However, might have remained nothing more than a surprisingly awesome curio had they not inadvertently perfected the longstanding tradition of hard rock bands releasing a preposterous, over the top acoustic ballad that can still get you singing along no matter what the occasion might be. Yes, they are partially responsible for “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing”, “November Rain”, and “To Be With You”, and let’s be honest, is the world not a brighter place with them in it?

Of course it is, and in a spectacular display of good things coming from insane pettiness, the band began with three different hard rock groups arguing about sharing a dressing room. Singer Gary Cherone and drummer Paul Geary both played in The Dream, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt was playing in a group called Sinful and bassist Pat Badger (not a stage name) played in “In The Pink”. These four men were the first four people in all three groups to get over themselves and struck up a friendship with each other, they started jamming together soon afterwards and decided to form a new group together.

Since Geary and Cherone both were late of the band The Dream, that obviously made the two men “Ex-Dream”, and in a stunning display of punning ability (pundamentalism? Sorry.), they named their new group Extreme as a result. The new group started writing, rehearsing and gigging soon after that, building a strong enough following around the Boston rock scene to with the “Outstanding Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Act” at the Boston Music Awards two years running before they’d even released their first album or signed to a record label. Their label deal would come in 1988 when they signed to A&M Records, and their self-titled debut album was released one year later, in1989.

All things considered it was an ideal first release, big enough to make a name for themselves, strong selling enough to secure a second album, but not so big that they had nowhere else to go but down. In hindsight, no-one at all could have predicted what happened next. Come August 1990, their second album, the preposterously titled “Extreme II: Pornograffiti” was released. Like their first effort, it sold modestly but unlike their second effort, the band had an ace up their sleeve. At first the album’s third single, “More Than Words” charted at number 81. However, then it started to climb, and climb and climb the charts until the band realized they had a bona-fide smash hit on their hands, hitting number one in June 1991.

In the dying days of hair metal, Extreme were the biggest deal of them all. They even had a second top five hit with the other acoustic ballad on their second album “Hole Hearted”, and ever since then they might not have ever been able to emulate that kind of success but then again, who has? What other rock band has had that kind of chart success ever since for that matter? The band split in 1996 but got back together in 2004, and their reunion shows have been a must see for any fan of 80’s metal. Yes it’s silly, yes it’s cheesy and yes, there are probably more tasteful ways of spending your time and money but the fact remains that no-one can deny Extreme’s charms, no matter how cool you might be. And twenty years after their heyday, they still come highly recommended.

Live reviews

Never thought I'd be able to see them live, and especially not so close to home! Still going strong in 2014 A.D., playing their repetoire as if it was still 1993. Now many of you know "More Than Words", maybe not by name, but you'd definitely recognize it if it came on the radio. Off of their second album, Pornograffitti, the rest is chockful of driving guitar riffs, memorable solos, amazing vocals, and musicianship across the board. Truly a masterpiece. The band played the entire album front to back on their last tour, and I was astounded at how tight, controlled, and energetic these guys still are. Then at the end, as a little treat, they played some fan favorites to round out the night. Seeing the opening "He-Man Woman Hater" solo played note-for-note (and I mean note-for-note) live in front of you and the dual bass/guitar 'battle' of Pat Badger and Nuno Bettencourt during "Cupid's Dead" were just two of the many highlights during the night. Gary Cherone's definitely still got those vocals, hitting some astounding highs, and Kevin Figueiredo should not be left out of the equation: he's definitely got the chops to drive things home and then some, which I was extremely pleased to find. If you even slightly remember these guys and still find yourself rocking out to old Def Leppard, Boston, or even Dokken tracks, do NOT pass them up. You might not find them together much longer. Come back to Buffalo when you can guys! It was killer!

Going to an Extreme concert is an "EXTREMEly" immense experience. Not only are you going to be listening to Extreme, but you get to watch Nuno Bettencourt shred on the guitar. The man is an incredible musician - I wish I could play half as well as that guy.

The atmosphere is always very lively. The audience is always pumped up; they dance to the music, the jump around, they sing along with Gary Cherone, etc. The band themselves don't dress extravagantly, instead opting for casual clothing. The stage set-up, like the clothes they wear, is very minimal, so as to remove all distractions from the music.

The band is present on the stage, with nothing but their equipment and various lights above them to make them visible to the audience. Now for the music itself. Extreme is a metal band. As their name suggests, they are not afraid to experiment with various subgenres; funk, glam, hard rock, heavy metal, you name it.

When the band performs "Get the Funk Out," Bettencourt starts off with a really cool solo. When the rest of the band joins in, the crowd goes nuts and screams with excitement. Watching Nuno play those solos live is reason enough to want to go see these guys live in concert. It is definitely an experience that takes you back to a time when metal music was much more popular.

This concert was amazing. I was quite surprised and happy that such a HUGE crowd showed up to support the group. Nuno never fails to delight with his incredible guitar playing. He was definitely the star of the show!!! Gary's voice was decent tonight as well. He's a great front-man. I could do without the "When I First Kissed You" song. I've hated that since the first time I heard it. It kind of put us to sleep. That was the ONLY bad part of the show...take that one out guys...it sucks. If I wanted to see Frank Sinatra...well, I never would actually.

One other thing...I really hate that people are holding up their cell phones and recording the entire show. STOP AND ENJOY THE SHOW PEOPLE!!!! It makes it hard to see over you. Kind of sad that people are doing that.

The bottom line...Extreme is AWESOME and they are DEFINITELY worth seeing live. I would go see them again and again and again.

The Band sounded amazing. The original 3 members, Gary,Nuno, and Pat were as tight as ever. The set list was so deep it was amazing that there were still like 3 songs I would have liked to hear. Crazy thing was I wanted them to do Queen's Hammer to fall, but got We are the champions so I can't really bitch there. Only thing else missing was if the boys would have done a couple of Van Halen III songs. Other then that AMAZING SHOW!! boys were dead on

Show muito bom! Nuno Bettencourt tocando muito! Vale a pena assistir... só faltou tocar a Stop the World.

Gary Cherone cantando demais também, baixo como sempre e o novo batera impressionando. A participação especial do Richie Kotzen na abertura também foi animal.

New music from Extreme is on the way, and lead vocalist Gary Cherone has recently spoken on the upcoming release – it sounds as though we’re in for an impressive record.

Extreme’s last recent full-length album dates back to 2008’s Saudades de Rock , so a new record has been a long time coming. The band has recently performed as a special guest for Cheap Trick at the Rolling Hills Casino earlier this month, with Cherone and bassist Pat Badger sitting down with the event’s host Eddie Trunk to talk all things new music and album release strategy.

On The Eddie Trunk Podcast , Cherone spoke of the potential sixth album stating, “It’s like the news cycle is so quick you [can’t] put out a whole record and not set it up, at least tease fans. I kinda lean towards trickling out a little bit.”

He continued, “I think this is some of the best stuff Nuno and I have written. I think he would say the same thing… There’s only one Nuno and he outdid himself on this record, his solos blow me away. I’m proud of a lot of the songs on the record.”

It looks like we’ll be waiting until next year for its release, but we should expect to see some single releases in 2022.

The band’s hit track Play With Me  also featured on Netflix’s mega-hit series Stranger Things  in the most recent instalment of the sci-fi drama – the same series which saw Kate Bush soar back into the UK top 40 chart with Running Up That Hill .

Extreme’s long-awaited sixth studio album is on the way, and as lead singer Gary Cherone explains, the songs featured are “some of the best stuff” he and Nuno Bettencourt have ever written.

In a new interview with Eddie Trunk on the Eddie Trunk Podcast , Cherone speaks highly of Bettencourt’s lead work on the record.

“I think this is some of the best stuff Nuno and I have written,” he explains. “I think he would say the same thing… There’s only one Nuno and he outdid himself on this record. His solos blow me away. I’m proud of a lot of the songs on the record.”

He also touches upon the band’s release strategy for the album – which will follow 2008’s Saudades de Rock – implying we might be in for a single or two in 2022.

“It’s like the news cycle is so quick you [can’t] put out a whole record and not set it up, [and] at least tease fans. I kinda lean towards trickling out a little bit.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Cherone remembers rekindling his friendship with Eddie Van Halen in the tail end of 2015 and beginning of 2016.

“I reached out to him and we picked up where we left off,” he recalls. “It was wild, because we went back and forth and we talked. And then when I went out to LA, I finally got to see him, and it was great.”

Gary Cherone served as the lead singer of Van Halen for three years between 1996 and 1999.

Cherone adds that while most of the conversations he had with Eddie at the time were the pair talking as friends, they did touch upon music, including the proposed “kitchen-sink” tour in which the band looked to recruit Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth for a massive reunion run.

“It was around the time [of their] 40th anniversary and they were talking about getting together to do something, I think with Dave [Lee Roth],” he says. During the conversation, Cherone recalls telling the guitar legend: “Hey, if it doesn’t work out, I know a singer for cheap!”

In addition to a new Extreme album, Nuno Bettencourt has been hard at work on numerous other projects, including two new solo albums – for which in January he announced he was holding open auditions to recruit a bass player, drummer and singer.

And last month, Bettencourt’s production company Atlantis Entertainment announced it would be holding a concert in an actual volcano crater in The Azores , with guest appearances from Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, Sting, Black Eyed Peas and Pitbull.

CONCERT REVIEW: EXTREME Transcends Space and Time at Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading, PA (August 8th, 2023)

extreme band tour 2022

Extreme ‘s headlining Thicker Than Blood World Tour kicked off in the US on August 2nd in Portland, and will conclude on December 16th in Italy, with shows in Australia, Japan, and Europe along the way. Their show at the Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading, PA, was the band’s fifth stop.

Gary Cherone [vocals], Nuno Bettencourt [guitar], Pat Badger [bass], and Kevin Figueiredo [drums]are touring in support of their chart-topping new album “Six” . In the US alone, “Six” has charted on five different Billboard charts, including Top Hard Rock Albums, #2; Top Album Sales and Top Current Album Sales, #10; Independent Albums, #14; Artist Top 100, #42 and Top 200, #67. “Six” is a godsend to the hard rock world. It is modern-vintage, ripe with unforgettable songs, roaring guitars, and fiery melodies. There are killer hard rock tracks, a few dark & stormy tracks, and a track that will put a smile on your face! If you put all songs into a musical blender and turn it up to high, you get Extreme “Six” .

Being the first new music from the band in 15 years, don’t think for one minute this is a comeback, as Extreme has never left and have no signs of slowing down. I asked Gary if fans would have to wait another 15 years for their next album; he laughed and said, “We already have songs recorded for the next release”

In Reading, PA, on a hot steamy night, Extreme came to rock hard and sounded ferocious. Aggression wins out over sentimentalism with their smoking-hot songs that are too powerful and passionate for even one audience member to show signs of tiredness. They hit the ground running with “#Rebel,” caught their collective breath, and decimated the crowd with “Decadence Dance.” Gary ‘s magnetic stage presence, Nuno ‘s guitar heroics, Pat ‘s pounding rhythms, and Kevin ‘s sonic thunder resulted in a compelling mix of rock & roll meets the Flying Wallendas. There was no safety net as rock & roll is supposed to be dangerous!

extreme band tour 2022

The band delivered a tremendous medley of songs that put them on the map within the 80s’ “Teachers Pet.” “Wind Me Up,” “Flesh n’ Blood,” and “Kid Ego.” They didn’t forget the 90s with “Cupid’s Dead,” “Rest in Peace,” and “Tragic Comic.” Highlights included when Kevin moved his drum kit to center stage while Nuno performed acoustical with his Washburn 12-string guitar to “Hole Hearted” and “ Other Side of the Rainbow.”

In the final stretch of their 2 ½ hour show, the most emotionally compelling song of the night came when they performed the brassy “More Than Words” as Nuno and Gary sat on stools to deliver the heart-wrenching love song. Prior to that, Nuno gave the fans “Midnight Express” while he tore up his acoustic guitar.

Gary did a remarkable job singing while he flew around the stage, sliding, spinning, and twirling his mic stand like a phallic baton. Like a pent-up tiger let out of his cage, he circled the stage singing every song with heart and soul. It’s almost as if he is processing the lyrics in real-time and conveying them to the audience. He is the consummate showman and performed for all the fans in the back of the venue.

extreme band tour 2022

Nuno ‘s guitar playing and stage acrobats were amazing, even with his right knee in a brace from an earlier injury this year. Like a fine wine, as he and the entire band are only getting better with time. He epitomizes sheer effortless virtuosity making his fiery fret-burning hammer-ons and alternate-picking look easy. The range of sounds he produced in his solos was impressive. His two-handed tapping arpeggios on “Get the Funk Out” was legendary to watch and awe-inspiring. His entire performance was a dazzling display of guitar-playing wizardry. Fans had to take a bow to the new guitar king.

Pat is the sonic ambassador between the rhythm of Kevin ‘s drumming and Nuno ‘s guitar playing. Kevin laid down a solid driving beat like a runaway train, while Pat was an unstoppable force with fingers flying at break-neck speed while taking on all the backing vocals. During their performance, they were in lockstep on every beat at the exact moment giving the band their tight sound. These little things make all the difference in a live show.

A song written and designed to showcase Nuno ‘s knob-whirling volume swells, phase-shifting prowess, epic delay, and whammy-bar fiddlin’ was “ Am I Ever Gonna Change,” as it was equally as fun to watch as to listen to. Of course, no Extreme show would be complete without Nuno performing “Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee.” In total, the band also performed five new songs off “Six” ,  and closed the show with “Rise” and its explosive guitar solo.

extreme band tour 2022

Fans have been starved for great hard rock, and Extreme fits the bill as they were present in-the-moment from the beginning to the middle to the end of the show. They have remained one of rock’s most unpredictable, undeniable, and unbreakable bands. The essence of them is their brotherhood which creates their fantastic music and drives their energetic live performance. Here’s to the winners! Their rabid Pennsylvania fans continuously showered them with gratitude and heartfelt applause as Nuno continually thanked them for helping reignite their career. In return, the band gave them an unforgettable concert.

There are still more shows available to see Extreme ; please check out the website for a show near you.

Extreme Announce New Album, Reveal Single “Rise”

It is the band’s first new record since 2008

Extreme band 2023

Extreme are back with a brand new studio album. The group will release SIX on June 9 via earMUSIC. It is the long awaited follow-up to 2008’s Saudades de Rock . Watch the official music video for the first single “Rise” below now, which was directed by lead guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.

“Musically, it’s aggressive,” says frontman Gary Cherone about album opener “Rise.” “Lyrically, it’s a cautionary tale on the rise and fall of fame. You get seduced into it. Once you’re on top, they’ll rip you apart and tear you down. That’s the nature of the beast.”

In addition to directing the music video for “Rise,” Bettencourt also produced the record.

“When Eddie Van Halen passed, it really hit me,” shares Nuno. “I’m not going to be the one who will take the throne, but I felt some responsibility to keep guitar playing alive. So, you hear a lot of fire on the record.”

The new album SIX will be available on black vinyl, limited edition marbled red and black vinyl, limited edition transparent red vinyl, CD digipak, and digital download. Fans can pre-order all editions and album merchandise now HERE . Click HERE to pre-save on streaming services.

Recently, Extreme’s music has appeared in the cult series Bill & Ted  as well as the Netflix juggernaut Stranger Things . They’ve sold 10 million records, topped the Billboard   Hot 100 at #1, packed major venues on multiple continents. In 1992, the band performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium in London. Today, they regularly average over 5 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

“With Extreme, there’s always a lot of passion and a little piss and vinegar,” Cherone says. “We’re not in competition with anybody else, but we strive to outdo ourselves. There are some moments on this album where we did. We’ve managed to stay together after all of these years. We feel like we have something to prove when we get on stage or in the studio. Because of that, I believe some of these songs are among the best we’ve written.”

“Whatever you think an Extreme album is after two or even three songs, it’s not,” Nuno adds. “That goes for every record we’ve ever done. True Extreme fans know to  ‘expect the unexpected.’   I feel like we need a good old school rock album. Six is definitely modern, but you can put on headphones and go on a journey from top-to-bottom. It’s like  ‘Extreme 2.0 .’”

Coldplay Pledges to Lower Carbon Emissions on 2022 Tour

On Thursday (Oct. 14), Coldplay announced the dates for its 2022 global tour in support of the upcoming album 'Music of the Spheres.'

By Gil Kaufman

Gil Kaufman

Coldplay announced the dates for an expansive 2022 world tour in support of the group’s upcoming Max Martin-produced album, Music of the Spheres  on Thursday morning (Oct. 14). The stadium outing is slated to kick off on March 18 with the band’s first-ever show in Costa Rica, at the Estadio Nacional, before moving on to the Dominican Republic and Mexico and then touching down in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on April 23 for a U.S. run slated to last through a June 14 gig at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

H.E.R. is on board to support the majority of the dates, with London Grammar booked to open a July 10 show in Berlin and an Aug. 16 gig at Wembley Stadium in London. Tickets for the U.S. dates will go on sale to the general public on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. local time here , with a release teasing that more dates will be announced soon.

Ed Sheeran Joins Coldplay to Perform 'Fix You' & 'Shape of You' at London Album Party

In an effort to make the tour as sustainable as possible, the band announced that all the shows will be powered by 100% renewable energy, with pledges to cut tour emissions by 50% from the group’s 2016-17 world tour and plant one tree for every ticket sold. According to a release, each venue will be equipped with solar installations and other renewable power sources including waste cooking oil and a kinetic stadium floor with kinetic bikes powered by fans that will store energy in the first-ever mobile, rechargeable show battery.

Coldplay are also encouraging fans to use low-carbon transport to and from shows through the official tour app, rewarding those who do with a discount at the venues, in addition to making sure that all merch is sustainably and ethically sourced. There will also be free drinking water and efforts made to eliminate plastic bottles at every venue; click here to see the full list of sustainability goals.

In a statement, the band said, “Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together. At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far. If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”
