Kruger National Park is one of Africa's top game reserves . It's also the largest and oldest national park in South Africa and is famous for its incredible diversity of wildlife. The park covers more than two million hectares, and the province of Mpumalanga provides access to the popular southern section. The park is also part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park , an extensive wilderness area linking Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, and, in the future, Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe.

Many visitors come here to see the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino, however the park also protects more than 500 species of birds, 114 species of reptiles, and 147 different mammals including rare species such as African wild dogs. San rock art and Stone Age archeological sites provide insight into the park's original inhabitants.

Visitors can choose from a wide range of accommodation, including humble campsites, affordable government-run rest camps, safari tents, guesthouses, and plush private safari lodges. Most visitors explore the park in their own vehicles, but guided game drives and walks are also available.

Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga

The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve (also called Motlatse River Canyon) is a favorite stopover on the journey from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park . It lies on the edge of the plateau of the Eastern Transvaal Drakensberg, one of the most beautiful regions in South Africa. Here, the highveld falls steeply down from a height of more than 2,000 meters above sea level to the lowveld, a fertile region with a subtropical climate.

The central feature of the reserve is the Blyde River Canyon , a spectacular steep-lipped gorge. Sightseers can explore the reserve by car along the Panoramic Route and veer off on side roads to breathtaking viewpoints. Favorite sights include the Three Rondavels, towering dolomite pillars ; God's Window, a panoramic view point; and Bourke's Luck Potholes, where prospectors once searched for gold.

The floor of the gorge is only accessible on foot. Hiking, swimming, rafting, and abseiling are great ways to enjoy this magnificent reserve, which is also home to a diversity of wildlife.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Free State

At the foot of the Maluti Mountains, near the little tourist town of Clarens , Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a land of rolling green valleys and sandstone rock outcrops with spectacular views from their peaks. Iron oxides impart a rosy blush to the bizarrely shaped sandstone rocks, which contrast beautifully with the lush valleys, cloaked in green.

The park's namesake Golden Gate consists of two 100-meter crags flanking the road, which shimmer in gold at sunset. In earlier times, Bushmen occupied some of the hill caves, and during the Boer War, the caves sheltered many Boer families seeking to avoid the British concentration camps.

Today, the park also shelters antelope, zebras, warthogs, and 100 different species of birds, including the majestic bearded vulture and the black eagle. Sightseers can explore the park on the many hiking and horseback riding trails.

Early settler's cottage in the Free State National Botanical Garden

Called the "City of Roses," the Free State's capital, Bloemfontein, is home to the beautiful Free State National Botanical Garden , as well as the superb Oliewenhuis Art Gallery . The gardens blend natural landscapes of indigenous woodland with perfectly preened picnic spots, and the lake here is a lovely spot to pause and see some of the garden's many species of birds. Scenic self-guided wilderness trails weave through the bushland and gardens, and highlights include a traditional Sotho hut with a herb garden and an ancient settler's cottage.

Housed in a Cape Dutch mansion, the Oliewenhuis Art Gallery takes visitors on a journey through the history of South African art. The permanent collection ranges from the old masters to more recent works, and includes paintings and sculpture. Featured artists include Pieter Wenning, Willem Coetzer, and Thomas Baines. The gardens here offer an inspiring taste of alfresco art with sculptures of South African historical figures and a colorful carousel displaying European and African mythological flourishes in a nod to the country's multicultural roots.

Chimp Eden, Mpumalanga

About 15 kilometers from Nelspruit, the Jane Goodall Institute's Chimp Eden sits in a 1,000-hectare nature reserve and is South Africa's only chimpanzee sanctuary . The sanctuary has been featured on an Animal Planet documentary series, Escape to Chimp Eden , for their work in rescuing the chimps from traumatic and abusive circumstances and rehabilitating them back into social groups. Their mission is to educate visitors about these endangered creatures and foster a better understanding of their behavior, social structure, and habitat.

The handlers share some of the resident's rescue stories while visitors have the chance to observe the animals in their large semi-wild enclosures and visit them at foraging areas. No human interaction is allowed so that the chimps can remain as wild as possible. Budding conservationists and animal lovers will enjoy this heart-warming experience and help out a great cause at the same time.

In the African rainforest habitat, visitors can cross the Crocodile River via a suspension bridge and view the impressive cascades. The South African Forest displays mainly coastal vegetation and plants from the Limpopo Province. Well-marked walking trails thread through the forests, and the restaurant here is a great place to relax after exploring the gardens.

Lisbon Falls

Snuggled amid the stunning Drakensberg mountains, about an hour's drive from Kruger National Park, Sabie is a fantastic base for adventures into the lush wilderness. Waterfalls and mountain rivers surround this pretty little town offering fantastic opportunities for hiking, canyoning, fly fishing, birding, mountain biking, and rafting.

This area is home to the highest concentration of waterfalls in Southern Africa. The most popular cascades are the 68-meter-high Lone Creek Falls , about nine kilometers from Sabie. A short and easy walk leads through the beautiful fern-fringed forest to the falls, where sightseers can enjoy a picnic. A short drive from here, Bridal Veil Falls spray water from a high clifftop. Other cascades in the area include Sabie Falls , just north of town; Lisbon Falls , South Africa's highest falls; Horseshoe Falls ; and Mac Mac .

The Anglo Boer War Museum

The Anglo Boer War Museum, one of Bloemfontein's top attractions , details the history of South Africa's Anglo-Boer War, which was fought between the British and the Boer Republics of the Transvaal and Orange Free State between 1899 and 1902. The war museum tells the story of the war and how it affected the entire country in some way or another. It uses a mix of dioramas, exhibitions, and a unique article collection to do so. Sandstone church in Clarens

In the heart of the Free State is the charming small town of Clarens, which is well worth a visit. Set at the edge of the Maluti Mountains, where the prairie meets velvet green hills, the landscape is gorgeous and the town itself, dating back to the early 1900s, is as quaint as can be. It is also home to a number of inviting guesthouses, restaurants serving locally sourced menus, and local shops.

In fall, the trees put on a wonderful color show, and numerous local festivals are held. But Clarens is attractive year-round, known for some of the best trout fishing in South Africa, as well as outdoor activities from horseback riding to ATV trails to mountain biking and golf. There is also Class III white water rafting on the Ash River.

Leopard in Sabi Sands

Adjacent to Kruger National Park , Sabi Sands Game Reserve is the oldest of South Africa's private reserves and home to some of its most luxurious safari lodges .

One of the best parts about visiting a private reserve, as opposed to a national park, is the ability to get closer to the animals in open-air vehicles. The animals can travel between Kruger and Sabi Sands unrestricted (there are no fences), and expert guides and trackers lead guests into the thick of the action, whether this is seeing a pride of lions on the hunt or getting up close and personal with a herd of elephants.

There are dozens of lodging options in Sabi Sands, but Singita Sabi Sands is one of the top luxury experiences here. You can choose from three unique lodging experiences on the 45,000-acre property. It is also known for its leopard sightings.

The Vredefort Crater

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, The Vredefort Crater is Earth's largest verified impact crater and its second oldest. It was formed about two billion years ago, when a 10-kilometer-wide asteroid slammed into the ground by the town of Vredefort in what is now the Free State.

At the time of impact, the giant space rock created a 100-kilometer-wide and 40-kilometer-deep crater. But over time, it grew to between 180 and 300 kilometers in width, while getting shallower, as its walls collapsed.

Today the crater itself has long been eroded away, but you can still see a concentric pattern in the upturned earth here. This is because the numerous layers of upturned rock eroded at different speeds, creating geological structures now known as the Vredefort Dome.

Page Contents

Cheetah Route

The Cheetah Route takes you through the Mangaung District – the cultural and political heart of the Free State. Abundant historical, cultural and natural attractions make the region a top business and recreational destination.

Towns on the Cheetah Route are:

Born in Bloem

Did you know that the National Party, the African National Congress (ANC), as well as the legendary writer JRR Tolkien, were all born in Bloemfontein? The beautiful city, which is also the provincial capital and the legislative national capital, boasts a massive range of attractions, including:

  • The Naval Hill Precinct which is home to a Digital Planetarium, a Fragrance Garden for the Blind, the 250ha Franklin Game Reserve, the iconic 6.5m tall bronze statue of Nelson Mandela, and a picnic spot. The Hill with its viewing decks affords visitors the opportunity of a panoramic view of Bloem’s urban landscape.
  • Fantastic flora at the Botanical Gardens and the Orchid House.
  • King’s Park, home of the Bloemfontein Zoo and the 80,000sq m Loch Logan Waterfront – SA’s largest  inland mall, set alongside a picturesque lake.
  • Cultural hotspots including the Oliewenhuis Art Museum & Gallery and the Sand Du Plessis Theatre.
  • Museums galore – the Anglo-Boer War Museum, the Choet Visser Rugby Museum, the SA Armour Museum, the Fire Station Museum, the National Museum (which houses the famous Florisbad skull), the Queen’s Fort Military Museum and the National Women’s Memorial.

“Kasie” Tourism in Botshabelo

A visit to the Free State is not complete without experiencing “Kasie” (lokasie/location) tourism and a visit to a “Chisa Nyama” (traditional barbeque) or “shebeen” (bar). While you are in Botshabelo, pay a visit to the Moroka Chiefs Monument and some places of entertainment in the area. A number of buildings still stand as a reminder of the township’s role in the struggle against apartheid, and there is a connection between facilities in Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu and Bloemfontein. Some of these connections are found in places such as:

  • The Free State Youth Martyrs’ Monument.
  • The house of Me Moipone Mohlakoana (Free State President of the ANC Women’s League and a member of the 1952 Defiance Campaign).
  • Ramkraal Prison (where many freedom fighters were incarcerated).
  • Paradise Hall (the gathering place for the 1952 Defiance Campaign).
  • Mapikela House (Ulundi Khaya).

Thaba-Nchu’s Rich Heritage

Thaba Nchu is named after the 2,138m-high Thaba Nchu mountain where the Barolong nation was centred in the 1830s. On a visit to the Chief’s Kraal you might even catch a glimpse of traditional tribal court proceedings. Ratlou Location in Thaba Nchu is the birthplace of Dr JS Moroka, President of the ANC from 1949-1952. His home, Moroka House, is now a national monument. Nearby are the Maria Moroka National Park and the Rustfontein Dam and Nature Reserve.

It starts in Harrismith and proceeds through the Free State to the Orange River after which it crosses the Eastern Cape to the N2 on the Wild Coast. It also includes Lesotho from the north to the south. In the Free State it passes through Ladybrand, Hobhouse, Wepener, Vanstadensrus and Zastron on the R26 Route.

Vredefort Dome

The Vredefort Structure in the Vredefort/Parys area has been declared South Africa’s 7th International World Heritage Site and is recognized worldwide as the oldest and biggest meteorite impact site.

Free State Climate

Almost uniformly at about 1,300m above sea level, the Free State climate is typical of the interior plateau with rain falling in summer, cold winters and lots of sunshine. The Free State is hot in summer, when most of the rain falls (between 600 mm and 750 mm in the east to less than 300 mm in the west), but it can be very cold in the winter, with heavy frost over most of the province. Snow often is recorded on the eastern mountains, and occasionally over the rest of the region. The average winter temperature is 7.7ºC and the average summer temperature, 23º C. The seasons in the province look as follows:

Summer: December – February Winter: April – July Spring: July – September Autumn: January – March

Areas in the east experience frequent snowfalls in winter, especially on the higher ranges, whilst the west can be extremely hot in summer. The south brings hot, dry summer days and long, cold winter nights. This semi-desert area also brings fluctuations of temperature from day to night. The west is warm and cold in equal measure, its inhabitants making use of the many man-made water recreation facilities to endure the heat as much as using heating facilities in winter’s low temperatures.

Attractions, Places of Interest & Popular Destinations

Embraced by several of South Africa ’s provinces and sharing a border with the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, the Free State lies in the heart of the country, between the Vaal River in the north and the Orange River in the south.

Did you know? The Free State’s major appeal is its natural beauty, open farmlands, and uninterrupted sky, quirky, idiosyncratic towns and villages, interesting road routes, and the vast rocky mountain area of the East Highlands.

The Free State is a rural province of wide horizons and blue skies, with farmland, mountains, goldfields and widely dispersed towns. This tranquil land of the windmill is famous for its warm South African hospitality and a mix of culture which is clearly evident in street names, public buildings, monuments and museums. Dressed sandstone buildings abound the highlands, while beautifully decorated Sotho houses dot the grasslands. Some of South Africa's most valued San (Bushman) rock art is found in the Free State.

The Free State is divided into 5 distinct regions and offers many 'must-see' attractions. Select a region from the brief descriptions below to view in-depth information about each region and to see popular attractions and destinations in these areas.

The Top Free Tourist Attraction in Each State

By michele debczak | sep 28, 2023.

Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Between flights, meals, and hotel stays, the costs of traveling can add up fast. One way to keep your vacation affordable is to prioritize activities without admission fees. From world-class museums to stunning national parks , here are the top-rated free tourist attractions in all 50 states.

The vacation rental company Casago dug into Tripadvisor ratings for attractions across the U.S. when putting together the map below. No matter what type of trip you’re planning, there’s a range of things to do in this country without spending a cent.

If you’re planning a New England road trip , you can peruse the Yale University Art Gallery in Connecticut before visiting the Boston Public Library in Massachusetts. The South is home to natural wonders like Falls Park on the Reedy in South Carolina and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee—both of which are open to the public. And while it’s hard to plan a Las Vegas vacation on a tight budget, it costs nothing to catch the fountain show in front of the Bellagio resort.

Choosing activities like free museums over expensive live shows is an easy way to keep costs under control when traveling. If you’re looking to save even more money on the road, it helps to choose the right accommodations, travel methods, and time of year for your trip. 21 free things to do in Seattle

Samantha O'Brochta

Feb 29, 2024 • 9 min read

Discovery Park, Seattle, Washington.

There's no need to break the bank on your Seattle vacation with our inside info on free things to do across the city, like a visit to Discovery Park. Photograph: Catie Bergman.

Seattle can be an expensive city to visit, but if you know where to look and how to entertain yourself, you can save a lot of money.  Between exploring lively markets and heading out on outdoor excursions, the Emerald City has a variety of activities that will leave your wallet in your pocket and your traveler's heart full.

Here are the top free things to do in Seattle .

Fish monger tosses a fish at a stall at Pike Place Market

1. Explore Pike Place Market

Touristy, but justifiably so, Pike Place Market is one of Seattle's top sights and absolutely free – except for the money you'll be tempted to spend here.

The range of stalls, from fishmongers and florists to food stands, demonstrates the Port of Seattle's importance and why it became such a valuable jewel in the Pacific Northwest's crown.  This is a great place to shop and people-watch any day of the year.

2. Enjoy Fremont's Public Sculptures

You don't need to pay museum entrance fees to see some of the city's best and most iconic art.  Fremont is an art gallery in and of itself, with public sculptures sharing sidewalk space with pedestrians and cyclists throughout the neighborhood.

Each of the 10 or so pieces here is totally unique, and you'll often find them dressed up for holidays or other special events. Together they represent a window into Fremont's golden era of counterculture bliss.

Local tip:  While in the neighborhood, pay a visit to the iconic Fremont Troll . The 18ft-high cement figure snacking on a Volkswagen Beetle is a popular spot for late-night revelry.

3. Head out on a pay-what-you-feel walking tour

Since 2012, Seattle Free Walking Tours has brought European-style informative strolls to the Emerald City. Organized as a nonprofit, these intimate two-hour walks give you a chance to learn more about corners of the city like Pioneer Square, the waterfront and downtown.

Visitors also hear the stories of many notable people who have called Seattle home, from the native Duwamish to the city's biggest celebrities. The tours may be free, but any tips you can spare at the end will be very much appreciated by the informed guides.

4. Stroll through Olympic Sculpture Park

The Space Needle isn't the only large-scale metal construction in the city; Olympic Sculpture Park , managed by the Seattle Art Museum , is home to over a dozen large artworks, with access free and open to the public every day from dawn until dusk.

From the sweeping red Eagle to the unusual Echo , this is a great place to partake of Seattle's art-loving culture.

5. Wander through Ballard Locks

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks , more commonly known as the Ballard Locks, are a valuable link for ships moving between Puget Sound and lakes Union and Washington. About 40,000 to 50,000 boats move through the locks annually.

Construction began in 1911, and thanks to a fish ladder that allows salmon to reach the spanning waters of the Sammamish River, sea lions are a constant presence.

People standing on rocks and looking at the sea

6. Go for a hike at Discovery Park

Covering 534 acres near the Magnolia neighborhood, Discovery Park provides a variety of terrains for those wanting a bit of outdoor time in the heart of the city.

Choose between forested trails, the rocky beach and exploring the West Point Lighthouse – as far west as you can be within the city limits. All are free and beautifully preserved by the city.

Planning tip: T he Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Cente r at Discovery Park is free and displays a permanent collection of Native American artwork and special exhibitions.

7. Join a neighborhood art walk

Throughout the summer months, Seattle's neighborhoods take turns opening their gallery doors for the artistic-minded to explore at will.

Pioneer Square galleries open the first Thursday, Belltown hosts on the second Friday of each month, and Capitol Hill's event is on the second Thursday. ( Full neighborhood schedule ).

Local tip:  In addition to free gallery access, many local businesses offer daily specials for these nights, making them perfect for a cheap evening out.

8. Tour the Frye Art Museum

This small museum on First Hill preserves the collection of Charles and Emma Frye. The Fryes collected more than 1000 paintings, mostly 19th- and early-20th-century European and American pieces, and a few Alaskan and Russian artworks.

Most of the Frye Museum's permanent collection is stuffed into a rather small gallery and comes across as a little "busy." Still, the Frye's tour de force is its sensitively curated temporary shows, which usually have a much more modern bent.

Three people sit on a bench looking out at the Seattle Skyline

9. Drink in the locals' view of the skyline

There are far cheaper ways to take in the Seattle skyline than forking out big bucks for the Space Needle.

Enjoy the view over Lake Union from Gas Works Park while families and dogs frolic on the grassy hills, or contemplate the free – but priceless – panorama of the entire skyline (Space Needle included) from Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill.

Another great spot is the 107-step Water Tower Observation Deck in Volunteer Park . Built in 1907, the deck provides beautiful vistas of the Space Needle, Elliott Bay and – should it be in the mood – Mt Rainier.

10. Stop by an open mic night at Hugo House

On the first and third Monday of every month, the mics at Hugo House are open to any and all writers in the city through an event called "Works in Progress."

Listeners are welcome, though we've heard that the stories are not necessarily family-friendly – it's a public open mic night, after all!

11.  Work up a sweat at Green Lake and Myrtle Edwards Park

With the great outdoors on their doorstep, it's no surprise that Seattleites love to exercise, and there are plenty of ways to stay active – many of them free.

If you need somewhere to get back in cycling shape, try a few circuits on Green Lake Park – a 2.8-mile loop. Runners should head for Myrtle Edwards Park and hit the paths along the shores of Elliot Bay.

12.  Celebrate the cultural side of the city at the Seattle Center

Nearly every weekend, the Seattle Center hosts various events, including cultural festivals collectively known as Festál .

From the Irish Festival in March to the Polish Festival in July and CroatiaFest in October, immerse yourself in international cuisine, dance and celebration, all without spending a dime on admission.

13. Watch the sunset or light your own fire

Pyromaniacs can indulge their fiery tendencies in Golden Gardens Park , one of the few public parks that allow open fires (in designated areas and during set times).

The park is also one of the best spots in the city to watch the sunset (on those days when Seattle is graced with a cloudless sky). The only thing you'll spend is time deciding on your favorite location to enjoy the moment.

14.  Hit the beach for some saltwater fun

Many of Seattle's plentiful parks also double as beaches, thanks to the bounty of salt and freshwater shoreline. Whether you're looking to swim, kayak, soak up the sun on a beach blanket, or even go ziplining, Seattle's beaches  have plenty of free and affordable activities.

15. Visit the historic Alki Point Lighthouse

The focal point of one of Seattle's most popular beaches , Alki Point Lighthouse , dates back to 1913. The US Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse but offers limited seasonal tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

16. Attend a Ladies Musical Club performance

The Ladies Musical Club  exists to further interest in classical music in Seattle through free concerts throughout the city.

From West Seattle to Wallingford, this woman-only group selects and produces a variety of classical music styles, staging shows in smaller community venues. You can find the club's performance calendar on their website in addition to streaming them on LMC's YouTube channel.

17. Admire art at Roq La Rue

This gallery has secured its reputation by taking risks: the work on view skates along the edge of urban pop culture.

Since opening in 1998, Roq La Rue , owned and curated by Kirsten Anderson, has been a significant force in pop surrealism and is frequently featured in Juxtapoz magazine.

Couple canoeing on lake, Seattle, Washington, USA

18. Smell the azaleas at the Washington Park Arboretum

This wild and lovely park stretching from Madison Valley to Union Bay offers a wide variety of gardens, a wetlands nature trail and 200 acres of mature forest threaded by paths.

More than 5500 plant species grow within the Washington Park Arboretum's boundaries. In the spring, Azalea Way – a meandering trail that winds through the arboretum – is lined with a giddy array of pink- and orange-flowered azaleas and rhododendrons.

Planning tip:  Trail guides to the plant collections are available at the Graham Visitor Center.

19. Wander the rows at the Seattle Rose Garden

The 2.5-acre  Woodland Park Rose Garden , near the entrance road to the zoo off N 50th St, was started in 1924 and contains 5000 plant species, including heirloom roses and a test garden for All-America Rose Selections.

Local tip:   As the rose garden is pesticide-free, spent flowers are fed to the animals in the zoo next door. Apparently the gorillas love them.

20. Dive into history at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park

Eloquently run by the US National Park Service, this wonderful museum has exhibits, photos and news clippings from the 1897 Klondike gold rush, when Seattle acted as a fueling depot for prospectors bound for the Yukon in Canada .

Entry would cost US$20 anywhere else; in Seattle, it's free! The museum opened in 2006 and is housed in the old Cadillac Hotel (built in 1889). It was rescued from a horrible fate after nearly being toppled in the 2001 Nisqually earthquake.

Local tip: The best part of the Klondike Gold Rush Museum is its clever use of storytelling. At the outset, you're introduced to five local characters who became stampeders (Klondike prospectors) in the 1890s.  You're then invited to follow their varying fortunes and experiences periodically throughout the rest of the museum. Sound effects and interactive exhibits bring these stories to life.

21. Marvel at the botanical Spheres

Amazon's latest construction in the Denny Triangle opened in January 2018 and is quite different from the Amazon Tower I, which went up in 2015 down the street.

Relatively low to the ground with a sci-fi movie aesthetic, the name – the Spheres –  says it all. Constructed in white metals and glass, the spheres house a veritable botanic garden's worth of plants.

You can stop in the atrium (called the "Understory") for a small exhibit on the building's architecture and ethos.

Planning tip:  Visitors can explore inside the spheres for free on the first and third Saturday of every month. Time slots become available 15 days in advance, and they get snapped up quickly.

>> Read more trending news

USA Today is asking for readers to cast their votes for the top 10 free attractions.

This year’s ballot includes:

The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. It was a Roman Catholic missionary in the 18th century and was at the center of the Battle of the Alamo in 1936. You need timed tickets to see the church but they are free.

Cape May County Park & Zoo has giraffes, zebras and lemurs among its residents. Admission and parking for the zoo are free.

Visitors to New York City can stroll through Central Park . The Great Lawn has free live performances. If you want to work out, the trails are perfect for logging a run. There are also playgrounds, boating and Shakespeare in the Park.

Chicago Cultural Center has free exhibits and programs, but even if you don’t have time for a show, you can gaze upon the Tiffany dome in Preston Bradley Hall.

If you want to save your money for the slots (or if you lost it all) Las Vegas still has a free experience at the Bellagio . The resort’s fountain spews water 460 feet in the air set to music. The fountain show is performed every half hour during the day and every 15 minutes once the sun goes down.

You can learn for free in Boston on the city’s Freedom Trail . It starts at Boston Common but you can join the walk anywhere along the designated pathway. Stops include Park Street Church , the Old State House , Faneuil Hall , Paul Revere House and the USS Constitution . Keep in mind, you can walk the trail for free, but some of the stops on the way do charge admission fees.

The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, the strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. To see the bridge, you can visit either Golden Gate National Recreational Area or Golden Gate Park.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee is the most visited national park in the U.S. You can see wildlife, visit historic buildings and bike and hike the trails. You will need a parking tag however that are $5 (daily), $15 (weekly) or $40 (annual).

Most of the sites at the historical park are free, but you do need a timed ticket for Independence Hall which has a $1 per ticket handling fee. There are also fees at The Benjamin Franklin Museum and the National Constitution Center.

If flowers are your thing then the International Rose Test Garden in Portland, Oregon, should be on your list. The Washington Park garden has more than 10,000 individual rose bushes of 600 varieties. There is a fee to park at Washington Park .

Another spot for plant lovers is the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, North Carolina where you can learn about gardening and plants or just walk around the grounds.

Redwood National and State Parks have some of the tallest trees in the world along with prairies, oak woodland and a rugged coastline. You can also camp and bike if walking or driving through the forest are not your style.

You may not think of visiting an area near a power plant to see wildlife but the TECO Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach, Florida is a protected marine sanctuary that allows people to see manatees in the wild and up close. The Tampa Electric Company’s plant takes water from Tampa Bay, uses it to cool through the system, then releases it into the bay where the manatees like to gather during Florida’s cooler winter months. 11 U.S. Tourist Attractions That Live Up to the Hype

  • Just because a tourist attraction draws the crowds doesn’t mean you should avoid it. A lot of the most popular U.S. tourist attractions are popular for a reason.
  • Here’s my advice to help you have a great experience at some of the country’s most popular spots, including the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and the Statue of Liberty.

What comes to mind when you think of popular U.S. tourist attractions? Crowds? Long lines? Souvenir stands? It’s no wonder many travelers go out of their way to avoid them. But … there’s usually a reason these places became famous in the first place. Here are my tried-and-true strategies to beat the crowds and make your visit to the best American tourist attractions a great one.

Tips for Visiting Popular U.S. Tourist Attractions

There’s a lot you can do to make a visit to a popular tourist attraction go more smoothly. One is to make sure you get your admission ticket ahead of time. Many tourist destinations in the U.S. allow you to buy in advance online, allowing families to avoid the lines at the entrance. And ticket-bundling packages like CityPASS will bundle admission to multiple attractions together into a single discounted price.

Also, consider visiting tourist attractions either first thing in the morning or towards the end of the day. The best chance of avoiding the pack is to get there before they do (or after they’ve left). Get the kids up early, and promise them a special treat for doing so—perhaps a favorite snack or a souvenir of their choosing after visiting the site. The throngs thin out toward the end of the day as well. Take the kids for an afternoon nap and head to the tourist attraction towards the end of the day.

BEST TRIP EVER: 50 Best Family Vacation Ideas for All Ages

Finally, don’t forget that many U.S. tourist attractions are open year-round. Families typically visit during summer vacations or holidays, but midweek and off-season will have many fewer people.

Here are the popular U.S. tourist attractions that are totally worth a visit and actually live up to the hype.

1. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

New york city, new york.

Perhaps the most recognizable symbol of New York City is Lady Liberty. This gift from the people of France was dedicated in 1886, and the Statue of Liberty is now both a national monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site . In 2019, a new Statue of Liberty Museum opened to illuminate the history, impact, and legacy of the site. The Statue of Liberty sits on Liberty Island, and is accessible only by ferry.

KID-FRIENDLY: 19 Best Family Resorts and Hotels in the U.S.

Ferry tickets can be purchased up to six months in advance at the Statue Cruises website or at the box office in Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Remember, the Statue Cruises ferry is the only service authorized to dock at Liberty Island. The Statue of Liberty Museum allows visitors to explore heirlooms and aspects of the site even when the Statue’s interior (pedestal and crown) are closed.

Ellis Island welcomed 12 million immigrants to America between the late 1800s and 1950s. This National Museum of Immigration allows families to get a sense of the immigrant’s journey via its collection of artifacts. Similar to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island can only be reached by ferry. Again, Statue Cruises is the only ferry service authorized by the National Park Service to dock at Ellis Island. Guests do not need a ticket to enter the Ellis Island Museum of Transportation, but there is a charge for the Statue Cruises ferry to the island.

In addition to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, New York City is loaded with iconic attractions from towering skyscrapers to world-famous museums and great food. Other famous New York tourist attractions perfect for a Big Apple family vacation include Times Square, Broadway, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, and Central Park.

Where to Stay in New York City

Midtown’s Kimpton Muse is less than a block from Times Square and Broadway and within walking distance to the Empire State Building, Central Park, and Grand Central Station to get you to other attractions.  All Kimpton hotels are family friendly, come with two-bed guest rooms and free use of bikes, are welcoming to pets , and host free evening receptions.

2. Niagara Falls

Niagara falls, new york .

America’s most famous waterfall isn’t just one of the most popular U.S. tourist attractions. It’s also the site of the first state park in the country, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (architect of New York City’s Central Park).  Niagara Falls State Park ’s manicured 400 acres allows visitors to experience the natural essence of the falls as well as some classic Americana attractions.

FIND A DEAL: 12 Best Hotel Booking Sites for Cheap Prices

Families will find a free observation tower with spectacular views of American and Bridal View Falls with Horseshoe Falls in the distance. The tower houses the elevator to the Maid of the Mist boat tour , in operation since 1846 and now operating with electric ferries. Brace yourself aboard the ship’s deck, and enjoy a ride directly into the white water spray itself. If you need to get even closer to Niagara Falls’ power, take a hike to the Cave of the Winds. Wooden walkways and staircases affixed to the gorge walls lead to a “Hurricane Deck” buffeted by tropical storm force winds and water.

Be sure to take advantage of the free Discover Niagara Shuttle to navigate the entire region along the Niagara River and also the historic Erie Canal.

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

Sheraton Niagara Falls is within walking distance to Niagara Falls State Park, and next door to the Conference & Events Center located on Old Falls Street, USA. This three-block entertainment district connects the conference center with the state park, and is often used for pedestrian-only outdoor festivals.

3. Walt Disney World

Orlando, florida.

At 40 square miles, Walt Disney World resort is nearly twice the size of Manhattan and packs in four world-class theme parks, two themed water parks, a shopping and entertainment complex, and more than 25 resort hotels ranging from basic budget style to ultra-deluxe. The Magic Kingdom is the classic castle-park, and celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021.

SAVE MONEY: Kids Stay Free at These 10 All-Inclusive Family Resorts

If you can only go to one Walt Disney World park, the fan-favorite Magic Kingdom is it, and features classic rides including Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, it’s a small world, and more.

But why limit yourself to one of the Orlando theme parks or Disney water parks ? The incredible Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios allows Star Wars fans to fly the Millennium Falcon and take on First Order Stormtroopers. Disney’s Animal Kingdom mixes live animals, rides, and attractions with fantastical lands like Pandora – the World of Avatar. Epcot gives families a glimpse of 11 different countries around the globe as well as futuristic attractions.

Where to Stay at Walt Disney World

Our family’s favorite place to stay is Disney’s Wilderness Lodge right on Walt Disney World property. It gives us the outdoor vibe of the best national park lodges , and even has a “geyser” that erupts hourly. Disney’s Wilderness Lodge has easy access to the Magic Kingdom by boat.

4. Hollywood Sign

Los angeles, california.

When most people think of Los Angeles, Hollywood comes to mind (might have something to do with the LA neighborhood plastering its name on a peak in the Santa Monica Mountains). Hollywood Boulevard is the center of LA’s film history and hosts a number of attractions including the TCL Chinese Theatre with celebrity footprints and handprints in the courtyard, the El Capitan Theatre (Disney’s historic 1926 theater with pipe organ and soda fountain), Dolby Theatre (home of the Oscars), a variety of stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, shops, dining, and plenty of other stops.

HIT THE ROAD: 11 Road Trip Ideas the Whole Family Will Love

In addition to Hollywood, Los Angeles is a destination with a little bit of everything—parks, beaches, museums, and theme parks. Pop culture fanatics ( especially teens ) will enjoy seeing the places where their favorite movies and shows are made. Other not-to-miss U.S. tourist attractions for a La La Land family vacation include: Beverly Hills, Griffith Park, The Getty Center, Santa Monica Beach, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Disneyland (technically not in LA, but too close not to include).

Where to Stay in Los Angeles

Santa Monica’s Shore Hotel is an eco-friendly boutique hotel that’s across the street from the beach and steps away from the iconic Santa Monica Pier . When your kids are tired of sand and saltwater, they can soak in the hotel pool overlooking the beach.

5. Golden Gate Bridge

San francisco, california.

One of the most immediately recognizable U.S. tourist attractions, the 1930s Art Deco Golden Gate Bridge spans the mile straight between the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The bridge offers an amazing walk, and both ends are located within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area filled with trails and overlooks.

On the San Francisco (south) side of the bridge is The Presidio , a national park filled with trails, beaches, and open space in the heart of the Bay Area. The Presidio has 24 miles of hiking trails and 25 miles of biking trails, as well as three miles of scenic coastline, eight overlooks, multiple picnic areas, and stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, city skyline, and Bay.

MAKE MEMORIES: 25 Best Family Vacation Spots in the U.S. for All Ages

The setting was the site of a Spanish military fort dating back to 1776 and became a U.S. Army post between 1846 and 1994 when the Presidio evolved into a national park. Today the grounds are home to lodging, dining, golf, multiple museums including the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center, Walt Disney Family Museum, Presidio Officers’ Club museum, Fort Point National Historic Site , and more. Great for kids is Presidio Tunnel Tops , a new 14-acre area with an Outpost playscape created by landscape architect James Corner Field Operations, makers of New York City’s High Line.

Where to Stay Near the Golden Gate Bridge

Families can stay in the national park at the Lodge at the Presidio . The location right across from the Parade Grounds and close to Presidio Tunnel Tops and the Walt Disney Family Museum makes it an ideal spot for families, and the rooms are comfortable and modern.

6. Las Vegas Strip

Las vegas, nevada.

The Las Vegas Strip is one of those U.S. tourist attractions that draws visitors from around the world, but it’s rightfully known as an adult destination. While the Las Vegas Strip is primarily for grown-ups, there are attractions for those under 21 including roller coasters, amusement parks, water parks, and even the Las Vegas Monorail , which is both a fun ride for kids and a handy way to get up and down the Strip. In addition, there are many family-friendly shows on the Las Vegas Strip that offer earlier performances (around 7:00pm) including the Cirque Du Soleil productions, Blue Man Group , and a number of magicians.

SUMMER FUN:   The Best Summer Vacation Ideas for Families

Only a 20-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. This park has a 13-mile scenic drive that combines spectacular landscapes and natural history including centuries-old petroglyphs. Speaking of natural wonders, Las Vegas makes for a great starting point for trips to some of America’s great national parks including Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, and Zion. Just keep in mind that Las Vegas is not called “Sin City” for nothing, and everywhere you turn on the Las Vegas Strip there’s temptation and adult imagery.

Where to Stay in Las Vegas

If you’re going to stay on the Vegas Strip, Bellagio Las Vegas is hard to beat. Families will be entertained by the fountain show that takes place every 30 minutes. The massive resort has nearly 4,000 rooms—standard accommodations are over 500 square feet with two queen beds. Fountain view rooms are available as well as suites for larger families.

7. Old Faithful Geyser

Yellowstone national park, wyoming.

The U.S. National Park system was described by noted film director Ken Burns as “ America’s Best Idea ,” and Yellowstone National Park was the first such park established not only in this country, but also the world. Old Faithful is Yellowstone’s most famous geyser, named for its frequent, regular, and predictable eruptions.

EPIC NATIONAL PARK STAYS: 12 Best National Park Lodges in the USA

Many people visit Yellowstone, watch Old Faithful erupt, and call it a vacation. However, those visitors miss out on so much of the Yellowstone experience. The park contains many different ecosystems including Mammoth Hot Springs, Canyon Village, Yellowstone Lake, and the numerous other geyser basins. Take a day to get away from the crowds, wander the boardwalks of the geyser basin to less regularly erupting features, sit and wait for the show. While you wait, there’s a good chance you’ll see tons of wildlife such as playful marmots, elk, bison, or perhaps even bears and wolves.

Where to Stay at Yellowstone

Old Faithful Inn defined the “Parkitecture” style with its massive stone fireplace and mission-style furnishings. The log structure is located just steps from the boardwalk surrounding Old Faithful geyser, making it easy to catch the display at many different times of day.

8. Grand Canyon National Park

Arizona .

A UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Grand Canyon is a vast spectacle of ongoing geological change continually carved by the Colorado River. Grand Canyon National Park is also a wonderful place for family adventures filled with activities such as camping, hiking, mule rides, river rafting, ranger programs, and just taking in the natural wonder itself.

Not everyone knows that the Grand Canyon is actually two distinct U.S. tourist attractions in one. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon gets the biggest crowds and heaviest traffic, and contains the most famous scenic views. The more remote North Rim of the Grand Canyon, by contrast, is only open seasonally and gets far fewer visitors. The North Rims views may not be quite as “grand,” but they are awe-inspiring nonetheless. Mule rides are offered from the North Rim into the canyon as well, and the dining room in the Grand Canyon Lodge offers dinner and a view that can’t be beat.

Where to Stay at the Grand Canyon

Treat the family to the historic El Tovar Hotel that sits on the South Rim of the canyon itself. The views are magnificent! The El Tovar was the epitome of style and elegance when it opened in 1905 hosting many dignitaries in its day. Family-friendly suites are available.

9. Zion National Park

Zion National Park is a natural wonder with mountains, canyons, rivers, arches, and other geologic formations located in the southwest corner of Utah. This is one of the most popular national parks in the system, and can get crowded during the summer tourist season as people line up to catch the park shuttle for the scenic drive into the canyon.

Popular hiking trails include the Riverside Walk and The Narrows. These trails allow you to wade into the river and cool off while you take a break from the desert valley sun. While the majority of crowds pack into Zion Canyon, there are less crowded and just as scenic regions of the park. Kolob Canyons is in the northwest sector of the park, and offers hiking trails and a scenic drive past the red rock formations. The Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway to the East Entrance of the park is another scenic drive peppered with turnouts where you can admire the view. And the Zion Tunnel, with its window views, is an engineering wonder unto itself.

Where to Stay at Zion

At the east entrance to Zion National Park is Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort . This expansive resort features plenty of activities including swimming, horseback riding, ATV rentals, and tours. In addition, there’s a wide range of family-friendly accommodations such as two-room cowboy log cabin suites, covered wagon glamping sites, and camping.

Not too far off the National Mall is the White House, and DC’s famous cherry trees ring the Tidal Basin to the Jefferson Memorial .

BLISSFUL BREAKS: 10 Best Vacation Spots for Couples

One of the best things about a Washington, D.C., family vacation is that most of the memorials and museums are all free. Colonial Williamsburg is the world’s largest living history museum and has exhibits, shows, and activities that replicate life in 18th-century Virginia. Families can take a carriage ride throughout the Historic Area, tour the Governor’s Palace and other historic sites, or fire a reproduction 18th-century flintlock musket. Be sure to take the family to dine at one of the historic taverns and take in a performance as well.

In addition to Colonial Williamsburg , the greater area also includes Yorktown, where George Washington secured victory in the American Revolutionary War; and historic Jamestown, site of the first English settlement in America in the 1600s. There’s plenty to do beyond these history-focused U.S. tourist attractions, too, including Busch Gardens Williamsburg theme park, Water Country USA , golf, and shopping.

Where to Stay in Williamsburg
