13 Game of Thrones-Themed Tours You Can Take Around the World

By rebecca pahle | apr 3, 2019.

Helen Sloan, HBO

If you lived in the world of Game of Thrones , chances are you'd be killed by either a dragon or a White Walker ... or maybe just by a plain old beheading. Luckily for all of you Thrones fans who are fond of being not-dead, plenty of travel companies offer guided tours that will let you feel like you’re inside the world of the HBO juggernaut, minus all the danger that the characters face.

Below are 13 great guided tours that you can take of Game of Thrones filming locations around the world. Note: You'll want to book before the final season premieres on April 14 to get ahead of the rush.

1. Brendan’s Road to Winterfell // Northern Ireland

Ballintoy Harbor in Northern Ireland served as a filming location for several Iron Island scenes.

Brendan Vacations offers a customizable tour through key Game of Thrones locations in Northern Ireland. The seven-day tour is on the pricier side—$4200 per person—but it’s worth it if you want to really geek out. In addition to sites of general historical interest, like museums and cathedrals, you’ll get to visit multiple Thrones filming locations, like the 18th-century mansion Castle Ward, the grounds of which were used extensively for Winterfell location shooting. The Stark kids frolicked there (relatively) happy and free of care early in season 1 ; later, Robb Stark’s army camped there. The tour will also take you to Ballintoy Harbor, which served as the filming location for several of the Iron Island scenes. It was at Ballintoy that Theon Greyjoy returned to the home he’d been taken from as a hostage by the Starks and re-met his sister Yara. (It was all downhill from there for poor Theon, but we hope your vacation will end on a brighter note.)

Book tickets on Brendan Vacations from $4200.

2. Game of Thrones Walking Tour of Dubrovnik // Croatia

Blackwater Bay’s real-life counterpart outside of Old Town Dubrovnik

Put on your comfy shoes for this three-hour walking tour of Dubrovnik, Croatia, the filming location for many of Game of Thrones ’s King’s Landing scenes. You can climb the city walls near Lovrijenac Fortress and look out at the sea—if the view looks familiar, that’s because it served as the location for Westeros’s Blackwater Bay, the site of season 2's unforgettable Battle of the Blackwater.

An upgrade to the tour will also get you a visit to the Trsteno Arboretum, which is often used as the filming location for King’s Landing's palace gardens. (Visit and let the spirit of Olenna Tyrell flow through you.)

Book tickets on Viator from $69.

3. Belfast Winterfell Trek // Northern Ireland

Castle Ward in Northern Ireland was used as a filming location for Winterfell.

On this daylong tour of Castle Ward (a.k.a. Winterfell) in Northern Ireland, you can see where the late King in the North was born, was crowned, and was murdered. A further stop at Tollymore Forest Park in Newcastle lets you see where the Starks first found their direwolf pups and where the Night’s Watch first found the White Walkers. Guides who worked as extras on Game of Thrones are on hand to break down the visual effects that transformed the real-life environs of Northern Ireland into Westeros. Plus, the tour is designed to be immersive, so Stark banners, cloaks, and swords are available for guests to use throughout the day.

Book tickets on TripAdvisor from $66.

4. Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour From Reykjavik // Iceland

Thingvellir National Park

Watch out for White Walkers on this eight-hour-long tour of Game of Thrones landmarks around Reykjavik , Iceland. Sites include Thingvellir National Park, which stands in for some of the show’s North-of-the-Wall content. (Don’t worry—there are no zombie bears.) You'll get to see Almannagjá Gorge in Thingvellir, which served as the shooting location for the Eyrie’s Bloody Gate—the site of Arya Stark’s season 4 giggle fit upon finding out yet another one of her relatives had died. Another stop on the itinerary is Thjorsárdalur Valley, site of the Wildling massacre of Olly’s village in season 4. (Olly, you’ll remember, gets his revenge .)

Book tickets on Viator from $110.

5. Seville and Osuna Guided Game of Thrones Tour // Spain

The Alcazar of Seville served as the location for Prince Doran Martell’s castle and its surrounding gardens.

Among avid fans, Game of Thrones ’s Dorne plotline was … well, let’s just say, not the most popular. But that doesn’t make Seville, Spain, where many of the Dorne scenes were shot, any less beautiful. The key site of this tour is the Alcázar of Seville, the palace that served as the shooting location for Prince Doran Martell’s castle and its surrounding gardens. On the bloodier side of things, this tour also includes an optional trip by train to the Spanish town of Osuna, where the Meereen fighting pit scenes were filmed.

6. The Narrow Sea Boat Voyage // Northern Ireland

Audley’s Castle—located on the grounds of Castle Ward—was used as the basis for one of The Twins, where the Red Wedding took place. (The second tower was CGI.)

Have a little Greyjoy blood in you? Then you may lean towards Winterfell Tours’ Narrow Sea Boat Voyage. Lasting approximately 90 minutes, the private boat tour takes you past the shores of Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough. You'll sail past Audley's Castle—which served as one of The Twins—located along the shore on the grounds of Castle Ward. You’ll also get a view of the filming locations for House Bolton’s Dreadfort Castle, Hoster Tully’s Viking-inspired funeral pyre, and more.

Book tickets with Winterfell Tours from $522 for a private tour of up to 10 people.

7. Game of Thrones Tour in Split // Croatia

You’ll recognize Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia from Game of Thrones Meereen scenes.

If you need more Meereen content, take a 3.5-hour guided tour of Split, Croatia, where the mountain fortress of Klis was a filming location for the city conquered by Daenerys. After the fortress, the next stop on the walking tour is Diocletian’s Palace, built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century, which has also been used as a Meereen shooting location. It’s also the site of Daenerys’s throne room as well as where she keeps her dragons locked up so they can't eat anybody they shouldn’t.

Book tickets on Viator from $78.

8. Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour // Northern Ireland

The Dark Hedges stood in for King’s Road in Game of Thrones.

Brienne of Tarth fans, step up. The Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour from Irish Tour Tickets will take you to Larrybane Quarry, where viewers were first introduced to the fan-favorite knight in season 2. Other stops on this daylong trip include the Cushenden Caves, where Melisandre gave birth to the shadow baby that killed Renly; Dunlunce Castle, used as House Greyjoy; and the picturesque Dark Hedges , which stand in for the Kingsroad. Another stop is Carnlough Harbor, which stood in for Braavos in season 6—it’s where Arya Stark just narrowly avoided getting stabbed to death by the Waif.

Book tickets on Expedia from $51.

9. Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour // Malta

Mdina, Malta is where the final goodbye between Ned and Catelyn Stark was filmed.

Along with Dubrovnik, Croatia, the island of Malta was a filming location for many of the King’s Landing scenes in Game of Thrones . Stops on this tour include the city of Mdina, site of Ned and Catelyn’s final farewell, along with the season 1 fight between Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark that ended in the latter’s capture. You’ll see Malta’s Mtahleb Cliffs, which stood in for the Shadow Cliffs, the location of Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre and the birth of Daenerys's dragons . And you’ll see St. Dominic’s Convent in Rabat, Malta, which served as one of the locations for the Red Keep, the castle that contains the Iron Throne.

Book tickets on Viator from $67.

10. Archery Movie Set Experience // Northern Ireland

game of thrones tour viator

Ah, season 1, episode 1 … when the Stark children were practicing their archery instead of living under the constant threat of murder. (OK, there was still a little threat of murder.) At Castle Ward, Winterfell Tours offers the Archery Set Movie Experience , where Game of Thrones fans can practice their archery in the "Winterfell" courtyard. Both visitors and instructors—some of whom trained members of the cast—get costumes to wear.

A bundle deal gets you the Winterfell Cycle Tour (where you’ll see, among other places, the tower from which Jaime Lannister pushed Bran) and a meet and greet with the Northern Inuit dogs who played direwolves Summer and Grey Wind.

Book tickets with Winterfell Tours from $39.

11. Game of Thrones Tour in Girona // Spain

Sant Pere de Galligants, a monastery in Girona, Spain, stood in for Oldtown’s Citadel.

Girona, Spain, is yet another city that’s served as an ersatz King’s Landing over Game of Thrones ’s run. Explore Catalunya’s tour takes you through the medieval town, home to the monastery Sant Pere de Galligants, the real-life stand-in for Oldtown’s Citadel. The tour also features the Plaza del Jurats, site of a memorable season 6 scene where Arya watched a theatrical version of her family’s troubles. Many of season 6's Braavos market and training scenes (when Arya was learning to be a master assassin) were filmed here, as were scenes surrounding King’s Landing’s Sept of Baelor—also known as the Girona Cathedral.

Book tickets on Viator from $113.

12. GoT to Escape // Northern Ireland

game of thrones tour viator

Say you’re in Northern Ireland and you’ve already seen all the Game of Thrones filming locations. Or maybe you’re just looking for something a little different. GoT to Escape in Belfast boasts three Game of Thrones -inspired escape rooms and one mystery room. Your mission? Save King’s Landing. Each room takes an hour to complete and is designed for between two and six players. (The website notes that you don’t actually need any special knowledge of Game of Thrones to participate, so feel free to drag your non-fan friends and family members along.)

Book tickets on GoT to Escape from $53.

13. Westeros and Beyond // Iceland, Ireland, Spain, and Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Or maybe you just want to do everything . STA Travel offers multi-stop trips geared toward younger travelers and students (though they sell flights to people of all ages, their website notes that “some of our airfare is available just to full-time students, [t]eachers at accredited schools, and youth travelers under the age of 26”). If the price is right, you can start in New York City and travel across the world to several of the key cities where Game of Thrones is filmed—Reykjavik, Dublin, Barcelona, and Dubrovnik. Once there, STA provides day tours like the ones mentioned above.

Our guide Natasha did an excellent job covering Dubrovnik's history and Game of Thrones information. The tour was beautiful and took us through the heart of the Old City, as well as stunning overlooks of Dubrovnik. Would highly recommend!

We had a excellent tour guide! He gave us a background on the history of the city as well as where they shot Games of Thrones. We had a great tim .

Had planned this tour for over a year and it didn't disappoint, our guide was great, very experienced on the presentation of the filming locations.

Kay was sooo amazing!! Dubrovnik is not to be missed. Your covered history as well as Game of Thrones

Really enjoyed touring Dubrovnik with Natasha! It was fun to see where they've filmed Game of Thrones, as well as learn more about the city. Our guide even brought banners for us to take pictures with in front of "Kings Landing." The tour also included admission to the city walls, which was advantageous to use later on in the day to see more of the city on your own. Would definitely recommend!

Very informative. Great to see the filming sites and hear how it all happened. Worth doing if you are a fan.

Excellent tour, guide was very knowledgable. Got to see lots of locations where GoT was filmed along with pictures of the scenes to compare them to!

Our guide, Daniela, was just great. She was super nice and enthusiastic. It's a must if you are a fan of the show and want to see some of the locations with your own eyes, but also learn a couple of interesting facts about shooting and production and some of the real historical events that happened in the landmarks

Our cruise ship made a port call to Dubrovnik on June 21 while sailing the Adriatic Sea. In researching something to do besides the usual cruise sponsored city walking tour I came across this tour. My wife and I love the GOT series but I was not aware that Dubrovnic featured so extensively in the King's Landing scenes. Our guide was Natasha and she was great! She knew all things GOT and even confessed to watching the show four or five time :) Our group was about 15 people, so it was manageable. The city was very crowded and it was hot, but Natasha did a good job of finding shade for us when she needed to explain a certain scene. She had 8" x 12" color photos of the scenes to jog our memories of the characters involved, the context of the scene, and when and where HBO took the liberty of making CGI changes. My wife and I opted for the add-on tour to the arboretum, a 20 minute drive out of the city on the coast. This was the setting for the King's Landing Gardens, and it was well worth it IMHO...simply beautiful. Natasha's dry sense of humor made this tour so much fun. I would consider this a must do for any GOT fan.

The tour was amazing and Tea was a terrific guide with very interesting stories and insights to the show, filming, and the actors. What made my experience even better was that missed my initial tour and they let me reschedule with zero hassle. Fantastic customer service. Very appreciated!

If you are a Game of Thrones fan, you will love this tour! Our tour guide was an extra in an episode and had behind the scenes gossip. We toured all the major sites that were used in the series and the tour conveniently ends in the gift shop where you can sit in the Iron Throne! The tour was advertised as 3 hours in length but ended after 2 hours. We would have liked to have the extra hour of history and more of the tour.

Overall a great walking tour of the major Game of Thrones film sites inside the old Old Town plus the other important areas. Our guide Tea was very knowledgeable about Dubrovnik’s history and of course about the HBO hit GOT.

Great time of year to come. Not as busy as peak season. Tour was great! Tea (the guide) had great knowledge about GOT and also Dubrovnik. You also get a city wall pass to use at your leisure. Would highly recommend.

This was my first time in Dubrovnik and since my visit was for business I did not have much free time. Opted for the Game of Thrones Wlaking Tour and it did not disappoint. Ended up i was the only guest who signed up and had a personal guided tour. Diana was a great guide, very knowledgeable about Old Town and the GoT filming locations. Thoroughly enjoyed the walking tour and my visit to Old Town.

Delightful tour of the old city of Dubrovnik, especially since our tour group was small. I have never seen the HBO series, but that didn't matter. Our guide related all the Game of Thrones info, but she also knew her hsitory and gave us quite a lesson on the city and the country of Croatia. Lastly, she recommended a local favortie restaurant where we we had a delicious lunch!

Our guide was so knowledgable!! Dubrovnik is SO beautiful, filled with so much history and GOT tour was AWESOME!!

Had a good day viewing the old city and seeing where they filmed the game of Thrones scenes. Andrea our tour guide gave us some history of the old town as well as enough time to take pics . Would reccommend it to anyone who is a game of thrones fan.

The tour is a must for game of thrones fans.. Lana the tour guide was amazing and very informative; you will see best views of Dubrovnik.. then you end up on the throne for a picture.. i love the tour

Amazing tour. Nikola was a fantastic tour guide and really illustrated how Game of Thrones was shot throughout the Old Town of Dubrovnik. Super cool tour for any GoT fans! Was definitely a highlight of my time in Croatia. Also provides some historical background of the city of Dubrovnik, which is always nice. Highly recommend!

Game of thrones travel tour review from reykjavik, iceland.

Iceland is the perfect place for those of you who love amazing scenery and Game of Thrones. Visit Reykjavik, Iceland, for the Wildling camp, White Walkers stomping ground and Þórufoss waterfall where a local goat was attacked by one of Daenerys‘ dragons. I headed to Iceland to take a Game of Thrones tour Iceland from Reykjavik, and I’m here today to bring you my review.

Travelling to Reykjavik

First off, I wanted to say that Iceland is an amazing place for solo travellers. Reykjavik has some of the lowest crime rates in the world. Everyone speaks English and transport is so easy to use.

When I got off my flight at Keflavik International Airport, I was directed straight to a desk where I could buy a bus ticket to Reykjavik. This bus not only took me from Keflavik airport to Reykjavik, but also transferred me to another bus that took me straight to the door of my hotel! Easy or what? Not to mention the stunning scenery that I had encountered before I’d even checked in!

The only thing that I would forewarn you about in Reykjavik is that the cost of living is extremely high. We’re talking around £5 for a hot chocolate, £7 for a beer and £12 for a burger and chips.

Hire a Car or Game of Thrones tour Iceland?

Iceland is quite easy to drive around, and most of the key sites are found around Reykjavik and along Route 1, the main ring road. If you have a car, the main benefit is that you can see things at your own pace. You can also explore further than the basic GOT travel tour takes you, such as heading round the ring road to John Snow and Ygritte’s love nest – Grjotagja Cave.

However, I found that going on a guided tour gave much more insight into the characters and the scenes, and I thought that this insider knowledge was worth it. Also, costs of car hire and petrol can be expensive in Iceland, and getting a coach tour isn’t that much more.

**Spoiler Alert!**

Game of Thrones Tour Iceland with Viator Travel

I booked my tour online with Viator travel, who partner up with local tour operators in each destination. From Reykjavik bus station, I took a coach which was clearly labelled for the Game of Thrones travel tour. A tip is to get there about half an hour earlier than your departure time to give you the chance to find and board the coach.

The tour itself was around 6 hours, and we were accompanied by the fabulous tour guide Astor. He explained that a lot of the names in Lord of the Rings were Icelandic, such as Bilbo and Frodo. As Lord of the Rings was a great influence on writer of Game of Thrones, there would pretty much be no GOT without Iceland!

Highlights of the Game of Thrones Travel tour included Þingvellir National Park and Þjórsárdalur Valley. We also got a fantastic view of Lake Þingvallavatn. Please not that the ‘Þ’ in Icelandic is actually pronounced ‘Th’. So these sites pronounced correctly would be Thingvellir National Park, Thjorsardalur Valley and Lake Thingvallavatn.

Þingvellir National Park

At Þingvellir National Park, the first stop was Þórufoss to view the scene where the goat herder is throwing rocks and Danaerys Targaryen’s black dragon swoops down and toasts his goat! Later, the dragon is accused of killing a child, and the dragons are locked away.

We then headed to the rift valley, which was the entrance to the bloody gate. The rift valley is also of geological significance, as it is where the North America and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. The rift valley walk was made by Sansa and Lord Baelish (I hate that creepy man!) in Season 4.

Þjórsárdalur Valley

The next stop, Þjórsárdalur Valley, is home to an old reconstructed Viking settlement which was used as the Wildling Camp. Apparently, some of the actors were even asked to sleep wearing their prosthetics to speed up filming at this location!

Lake Þingvallavatn

Fákasel horse park.

If there’s time on the way back, your guide will make an extra stop at Fákasel Horse Park, for you to meet Iceland’s tiny horses, and see a horse riding show. Many of these Icelandic horses starred in the filming as Westeros garrons. You can also grab a yummy Icelandic hot dog on the way home!

How to book your Game of Thrones Tour Iceland

Book your Game of Thrones tour Iceland on Viator . Prices start from around €103 and the tour is bookable online. Remember to take money for food and drinks, as this is not included in the tour.

Do you need travel insurance for a Dubrovnik tour?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance.

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

Plus, as a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !

Best tours in Dubrovnik

Discover the old town of dubrovnik.

Discovering the Old Town of Dubrovnik is a must on any Dubrovnik itinerary , and it’s easy to see why.

The Old Town of Dubrovnik just exudes history and charm. It’s one of the best places to stay in Dubrovnik , and as a matter of fact, it’s even a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

While you can easily spend hours simply wandering around, admiring the architecture and gaping at the beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea, there are many unique spots to visit within the Old Town as well.

Arguably, the most popular attraction in the Old Town of Dubrovnik are the Old Town walls .

These walls were constructed between the 11 th century and the 13 th century to protect the city from war and disease. It’s undoubtedly one of the most amazing sites in town.

But that’s certainly not all that Old Town has to offer. You can also visit the Rector’s Palace, hop aboard the Dubrovnik Cable Car, or pop by the stunning Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Go kayaking in Dubrovnik Bay

One of the most popular things to do in Dubrovnik is go kayaking. As a matter of fact, many of the best tours in Dubrovnik are kayaking tours!

Not only will you get to paddle through the gorgeous turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea, you’ll also get to admire the historic beauty of Old Town and walls of Dubrovnik from the sea.

While you can take a Dubrovnik kayak tour at any time of day, I highly recommend going at sunset. After all, that golden glow just makes everything seem a bit more magical.

I did two kayaking tours in Dubrovnik, one in the morning and the other from the afternoon till sunset time and I much preferred the sunset kayak tour.

While it might be a bit cold to swim in the sea, the golden light over the sea and Old Town of Dubrovnik is a sight that should feature on every Croatia bucket list .

You’ll even get to see the Iron Throne, which HBO gifted to the city of Dubrovnik after filming concluded.

I wrote an article mapping all the filming locations of Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik , so that you can do a DIY walking tour. However I believe the best way to explore all of the Game of Thrones filming spots is by taking a guided tour.

Do a traditional Dalmatian cooking class

One aspect of Dubrovnik that is often overlooked is the cuisine. Broadly known as Dalmatian cuisine (after the Croatian region of Dalmatia), the food of Dubrovnik includes loads of fresh seafood, tasty vegetables, and rich olive oil.

There are two ways to get the most of Dalmatian cuisine during your visit. First and foremost, you can eat at some of the best local restaurants in town, including Pantarul, Kopun, and Moskar.

Second, you can take a wonderful cooking class! This traditional Dalmatian cooking class takes you out to the Croatian country side. While there, you can learn how to make (and eat) some of the most authentic Dalmatian dishes.

As for what exactly you’ll make during this cooking class, the recipe depends on the season. After all, you want to use the freshest ingredients!

You can make anything from Dalmatian-style bread to menestra (potato and cabbage stew) to peka (veal or lamb baked under an iron bell). Tasting the delicious local food is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Dubrovnik .

Best Dubrovnik day trips

Boat trip to the elafiti islands  .

If you want to explore beyond Dubrovnik, don’t worry! There are loads of wonderful tours that venture beyond the city, including to the Elafiti Islands.

The Elafiti Islands, also known as the Elaphiti Islands and the Elaphite Islands, are gems of Dubrovnik and a must-see on any Croatia itinerary .

With picture-perfect beaches, adorable fishing villages, and historic churches, a trip to the Elafiti Islands is one of the best Dubrovnik boat trips!

You can snorkel at Sipan Island, pop into the Franciscan Monastery, dine on fresh seafood, and suntan on the sandy shores of Sunj Beach.

And while the islands are absolutely beautiful, the boat ride there is nothing to balk at either. Not only will you get to enjoy views of the Adriatic Sea, you’ll also get to admire the storybook-worthy town of Dubrovnik from afar.

Day Trip to Montenegro

The gorgeous Elafiti Islands aren’t the only Dubrovnik excursions away from Dubrovnik that are worth your time. You can also take a day trip to Montenegro.

Montenegro is a neighbouring country known for its beautiful natural landscapes. Going on a day trip to a different country might sound weird, but it will actually be well worth it.

From Dubrovnik it’s just a short drive to Montenegro, and even if only for one day, you’ll be able to get a glimpse of this gorgeous country, which features on every Europe bucket list !

You can visit St. Nicholas’ Church in Perast, hike to St. Giovanni Fortress in Kotor, and soak up the sun at Drobnji Pijesak Beach in Budva.

Mostar and Kravica Waterfall in Bosnia-Herzegovina

So far on this list of the best Dubrovnik tours, I’ve already included one excursion suggestion outside of Croatia – to Montenegro. But you can easily make your way to Bosnia-Herzegovina as well.

There are two main highlights of Bosnia-Herzegovina that are within driving distance of Dubrovnik. The first is the city of Mostar. This city is most well-known for the eye-catching Ottoman bridge known as the Mostar Bridge.

But you can also climb to the top of the Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque’s minaret, find a few treasures in the Old Bazaar, and check out the War Photo Exhibition.

The other is the Kravica Waterfall. This 83-foot-tall waterfall is absolutely picture-perfect. Spread over 500 feet, the Kravica Waterfall is separated into dozens of different cascades and framed by thriving green plants.

Final thoughts on the best tours in Dubrovnik

There you have it, the ultimate compilation of all the best tours and day trips in Dubrovnik! Have you done any of these Dubrovnik tours? How did you find them? Let me know in the comments below!

If you’ve read my blog before you’ll know I’m not a huge fan of guided tours. However there are some situations where taking an organized tour is easier, cheaper and more fun than doing it yourself.

Dubrovnik is one of those places. Across my three trips to Dubrovnik I’ve taken a variety of tours and day trips, and can confidently say they’ve all been a great addition to my time in Dubrovnik.

Whether you want to learn to cook traditional Dalmatian cuisine, or head on an adventure to discover all the Game of Thrones filming locations in the Old Town, there’s a tour in Dubrovnik for you.

Some travellers only visit Dubrovnik on a day trip from Split , and they don’t know just how much they’re missing on! Make sure to plan a separate Split itinerary , and make the best of both cities.

I hope you find my guide useful in choosing the best Dubrovnik day trips and tours for your trip! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

Covid-19 safety measures

We here at Irish Tour Tickets would like to thank all our customers for their patience and cooperation during this difficult time. It is a difficult time for the tourism industry as COVID 19 has impacted the world in ways none could have thought. Taking the smallest things for granted is something that will not be done when this pandemic passes us. That is why Irish Tour Tickets has been busy at work to make sure that when you want to enjoy the small and big things, we will be there to help you!

What have we done since lockdown?

During our time in ‘lockdown’ we have taken the time to complete an impeccable clean of our vehicles. We sterilised every seat, floor, and railing that our passengers could encounter. This is being done daily. Risk assessments have been carried out and updated regularly, so we are in line with local regulations.

Our shop where you will come to visit or check in is also receiving regular deep cleans so when it is time, our colleagues can come into help with your inquiries in a safe, sterile environment.

We have been keeping up to date with all recent advice and changes to help stop the spread of COVID 19. Therefore, we will be implementing changes for when we are ready to show you Belfast once more.

To combat the spread of COVID 19, we will be implementing the following:

There will be a limit on how many passengers will be seated on our vehicles for our day tours. We have a range of coaches that go from 16 right up to 50 seats. Social distancing measures will be implemented to ensure that our passengers are safe whilst visiting Northern Ireland. Seats will be blocked that are too close to other passengers or our colleagues. Face to face seats will be blocked.

We will be providing liquid hand sanitizer for passengers getting on and off the coach as each stop of the tour. Our buses are being cleaned daily to help stop the spread. Our colleagues are to wash their hands every time before they board a vehicle. Masks will be providing when joining our tour.

Vouchers will be shown on technological devices so there is no cross contamination. We will have posters on vehicles to remind our customers of the social distancing regulations. We will direct you to where your coach will be waiting, and no bottles of water will be given.

As an extra procedure, Irish Tour Tickets will now be carrying out temperature checks on all passengers boarding our coaches/buses. This is to ensure the spread of COVID 19 is lessened when taking our tour. Please be ready for your temperature to be taken.

If your temperature is above NHS guidelines, you will be denied entry onto the coach/bus and advised to go home and self-isolate.

If this was to happen to you, your booking will be cancelled and refunded within company guidelines.

We hope that this information puts your mind at ease, and we hope to see you soon! We will all come out stronger after this and will enjoy life to its fullest! We thank our customers for their support and understanding during this uncertain time. A last thank you to our staff who are working so hard to make sure that we are ready to go once this is all over.

We look forward to seeing you all soon! IRISH TOUR TICKETS TEAM.

2. Carrickfergus Castle

Carrickfergus Castle

Carrickfergus Castle, located in the town of Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland, is a magnificent medieval fortress with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. This iconic castle has also played a role in the popular television series Game of Thrones , further adding to its allure.

In Game of Thrones, Carrickfergus Castle served as the backdrop for the Castle Black , the stronghold of the Night’s Watch . The castle’s formidable stone walls and imposing architecture perfectly captured the essence of Castle Black, bringing the world of Westeros to life.

Visitors to Carrickfergus Castle can explore its impressive towers, gatehouses, and battlements, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding town and coastline. Inside, the castle houses a museum that showcases its intriguing history, including its role in various conflicts and sieges over the centuries.

Stepping through the castle’s massive gate, visitors can immerse themselves in the medieval ambiance and envision the lives of knights, soldiers, and nobility that once occupied these historic walls. The castle’s strategic location on the shores of Belfast Lough adds to its allure, providing a picturesque backdrop for photographs and a sense of awe-inspiring beauty.

Whether you’re a Game of Thrones fan or a history enthusiast, a visit to Carrickfergus Castle is a journey back in time. It offers a glimpse into Northern Ireland’s medieval past, while also serving as a testament to its enduring cultural significance.

3. Carnlough / Braavos

Carnlough Harbour

Carnlough, a picturesque coastal village nestled along the Antrim Coast of Northern Ireland, served as the stunning backdrop for the city of Braavos in Game of Thrones. Its idyllic charm and unique features made Carnlough the perfect choice to bring the mystical city to life.

Braavos, one of the significant locations in the Game of Thrones universe, is a city known for its vibrant culture, intricate canal system, and iconic landmarks. Carnlough effortlessly embodied these qualities, transforming into the enchanting city of Braavos with its own distinct character.

The village’s picturesque harbor, lined with colorful houses and small fishing boats, served as the central point of Braavos, creating a visual spectacle that captivated viewers. Its narrow streets and quaint buildings were adorned with intricate designs and architectural details, reminiscent of the rich tapestry of the Game of Thrones world.

Visitors to Carnlough can immerse themselves in the essence of Braavos by exploring the village’s charming streets and harbor. They can stroll along the water’s edge, imagining themselves as characters from the show, and take in the awe-inspiring coastal scenery that enchanted both viewers and filmmakers alike.

The transformation of Carnlough into Braavos highlights the incredible fusion of fantasy and reality that Game of Thrones achieved through its use of Northern Ireland’s diverse landscapes. Carnlough’s portrayal of Braavos will forever be etched in the hearts of fans, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a touch of magic from the world of Westeros.

4. Cushendun Caves / The Stormlands

Game of Thrones - Cushendun Caves ~ A Cove in the Stormlands (02)

The Cushendun Caves  helped to create some of the eerie settings near Storm’s End . These 400-million-year-old caves provided the perfect rocky, coastal landscape to represent the Baratheon  homeland.

In the GOT TV series , the Cushendun Caves feature in one of the show’s most famous and mystical scenes. Here, Melisandre gives birth to the Shadow Assassin , much to the amazement of Davos Seaworth . This smokey spectre travels through the air to find Renly Baratheon , killing him in his tent. For viewers, this was the first time they saw how powerful Melisandre could really be. It also showed how far Stannis Baratheon would truly go to sit on the Iron Throne .

But the Cushendun Caves are more than just the backdrop for Storm’s End. They are a thing of natural beauty and undeniable proof of the picturesque qualities of the Northern Irish coastline. When visiting the cave featured in the show, make sure to take the time to soak up the verdant green landscape, and breath in some fresh Irish Sea air.

5. Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge (28098)

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, located along the stunning Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland, is a captivating attraction that draws visitors from all over the world. Suspended high above the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean, this iconic rope bridge offers a thrilling and unforgettable experience.

The bridge, which spans 20 meters and stands 30 meters above the rocky shoreline, was originally built by salmon fishermen over 350 years ago. It was used as a means to reach the Carrick-a-Rede Island, where fishermen would cast their nets for the abundant salmon population. Over time, it has transformed into a popular tourist destination, known for its breathtaking views and exhilarating crossing.

The surrounding area of the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is equally enchanting. Nestled within the wild and untamed beauty of the Causeway Coast, the bridge is part of a larger nature reserve, rich in biodiversity and natural wonders. Visitors can explore the rugged cliffs, hike along picturesque trails, and spot seabirds nesting on the cliffsides.

Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure seeker, or simply someone who appreciates natural beauty, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge offers an unforgettable experience. It’s a place where history, breathtaking views, and the thrill of crossing a swaying bridge come together to create an extraordinary adventure that will be etched in your memory forever.

6. The Dark Hedges / The Kingsroad

The Dark Hedges / The Kingsroad in Game of Thrones

The Dark Hedges  looked like a place straight out of a fantasy novel long before it became the backdrop of The Kingsroad in Game of Thrones . The interlocking canopy of trees covering the road naturally creates a sense of magic and mystery.

James Stuart originally planted the beech trees lining this road in 1755 . He wanted them to grow and line the entranceway to his home, Gracehill House .

According to local legend, a ghost named the Grey Lady haunts the Dark Hedges. Some say she is the spirit of James Stuart’s daughter , or possibly a housemaid who died mysteriously. Others speculate that the Grey Lady is a spirit from a nearby abandoned graveyard. People say that on Halloween night, her fellow graveyard residents join in on the haunting fun!

While James Stuart originally planted 150 trees, only around 90 are still standing. In 2016, Storm Gertrude fell two trees and damaged a third. The timber from these trees made 10 bespoke doors . Each one features a Game-of-Thrones-inspired design. You can find them throughout Northern Ireland .

7. Giant's Causeway

Giant's Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and one of Northern Ireland’s most popular historical landmarks. It draws in hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Situated on the County Antrim coast, Giant’s Causeway is the product of two natural forces coming together. It formed when molten lava cooled down as it met with the cold sea water, around 50 to 60 million years ago. The result was a sprawling bed of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, that covers just under 5km of coastline.

Some legends also talk about how Giant’s Causeway came to be. The most popular features the Irish mythical character Fionn mac Cumhaill , who was feuding with a Scottish giant,  Benandonner . Fionn built the causeway between the two islands so that they could fight it out.

However, when he saw how big Benandoner really was, he retreated back to his wife for help. She quickly wrapped Fionn in a blanket and laid him across her lap. When the Scottish giant arrived she told him that this was, in fact, the infant son of Fion mac Cumhaill. Seeing how big the toddler was, Benandonner figured that the father must be enormous. So, he ran away, destroying the causeway as he went.

8. Dunluce Castle / Pyke Castle of House Greyjoy

Dunluce Castle / House Greyjoy

Exterior shots of Dunluce Castle were used in Game of Thrones for Pyke Castle of House Greyjoy on Pyke Island . But that’s not the only exciting thing about this 16th-century structure. It has many other claims to fame and tales from within its walls.

Featuring on the HBO TV series wasn’t the first time that Dunluce Castle was shown to the world. In the early 70s, it also featured on the inner sleeve of the Led Zeppelin album Houses of the Holy . It was also the one-time home of the famous Scottish warrior chieftain  Sorely Boy MacDonnell . It was during Sorely’s reign that the Girona , a vessel from the Spanish Armada , was caught in a storm and wrecked on nearby rocks. The canons were taken from the ship and installed as the castle’s security system.

A local legend also claims that at one time, due to cliff beneath the castle eroding, the castle’s kitchen suddenly plummeted into the sea . The only member of staff left alive was the kitchen boy. He was sitting on a stool in the inside corner of the room when it fell.
