We’re on our third day of the Both Sides of the Jordan tour. America Israel Tours has taken very good care of us. I especially appreciated the representative who met us at the airport and made the trek through customs so easy for us! There was a rep waiting for us at the hotel, too, in case any problems arose. Yesterday was jam-packed with activities. We weren’t rushed at all, but I really would have appreciated some quiet time to enjoy the sites more. However, with many tour buses right behind us, I guess that wasn’t possible. Today has already been remarkable, with a memorable boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, with praise music and testimonials - and some of that quiet time I craved. Our guide Barak has an amazing knowledge of the Bible and this land, his land, and has made everything come alive for us. His passion for the tour and his kindness to all of us has made everything very enjoyable.

Both Sides of the River Jordan Nov 2022

The trip was worth the wait after Covid. Skylar & Regan from AIT answered all questions & sent pertinent paperwork as needed to get us started on a memorable journey. The first week is the Roots tour with Jordan as an extension. Forty-one started with 18 going on to Jordan. If you get Yair as a tour guide in Israel, you are getting the best guide. Not only is he knowledgeable & very personable, but also funny making each stop memorable. Menahem, the bus driver, uses his driving skills in difficult situations. If women had short sleeve tops, a shawl was not necessary, but definitely needed for sleeveless tops. No need to change dollars which were accepted when credit cards couldn't be used. Have plenty of $1 bills especially for water which was sold everywhere. Crossing the border to Jordan for 2 extra nights was definitely worthwhile. Jerash ruins show a huge ancient city, but Petra is a true wonder of the world. There is a lot of walking, sometimes on uneven surfaces & uphill. An electric cart (for a fee) can be taken between the Visitors Center & the Treasury if you are unable to walk long distances. You can ride a horse part way which is included in the ticket price, but the handler will expect a tip. Once reaching the Treasury, a very short camel ride can be taken (about $5). Our guide Saleh was knowledgeable and answered all our questions. This trip not only enriched my faith as so many others have said, but I got to see different cultures and met a lot of great people.

Both Sides of the River Jordan Sep 2022

Both Sides of the River was an amazing trip, one we thought about for several years. AIT couldn't have been a better tour company, as well as our tour guide Yair who was so knowledgeable, patient, considerate and pleasant to be with. It was physically demanding and HOT (beyond AIT's control !). Two people using canes did all with us & kept up. We marched on, looking and learning, trying to absorb as much as we could from all the sights and information. Everything was planned to a T, incredible logistics. And for our arrivals & departures too and crossing the Jordan border. It was a rigorous schedule; you certainly get your "money's worth." A great group of people too who also contributed to the trip. I would not hesitate to recommend this trip and AIT to anyone. Toda ! Shakrun !

What an amazing trip of a lifetime! This well organized tour has helped me see more of the Holy Land than I would ever have seen on our own. From the planning to the tour itself, my questions were promptly answered and I was always well informed. Our guide, Yahir, was quite knowledgeable and always entertaining. The baptism at the Jordan River was a moving experience both for those who chose to be baptized and for those who cheered them on. We floated in the Dead sea, heard the story of Masada while viewing where it happened, sailed on the Sea of Galile and saw the Jesus Boat, Caperniam, and Nazareth, and so many other amazing places. We are heading to Jerusalem today and after a few days there, on to Jordan and Petra. I would recommend this tour group to anyone.

We were referred to American Israel Tours by friends who are very experienced, discerning travelers and toured with AIT in 2018. Scheduled for our trip in May 2020 it was delayed by Covid for 2 years. Regan and Skyler, the AIT staff, did a wonderful job keeping us up-to date prior to our departure and navigate Covid requirements. Upon our arrival in Israel we met our fabulous guide, Lital, who was exceptional in every way. She was knowledgeable, thoughtful, considerate, and treated our diverse, wonderful group like family. This was a trip of a lifetime and enthusiastically recommend it. You should definitely extend your trip to Jordan if possible. Our visit to Amman and especially Petra was AMAZING and our guide Saleh was excellent.

Both Sides of the River Jordan May 2022

We took the both sides of the Jordan tour. The week we seen in Israel with Yair as our tour guide and Gabi as our driver was incredible. Yair is so full of knowledge and ability to put together knowledge with order. He accomplished putting together the Bible to the place where it happened He was clear to explain when it was a certain place or a Traditional. He read passages from the old and new testament pertaining to the places we went. When we finished this tour we could not believe all the places we went to. Gaby was an incredible driver who worked with Yair incredibly well. He always would try to adjust to what Yair asked and we went to a lot of places that I feel other people did not go to. the n we finished the tour all of us in the bus felt like a family and were sad toa ago!! Can't recommend this tour company enough. We are looking forward to another tour with them and hopefully Yair, even though the people that went with Barack liked him very much. Well done to all and thank you so much for making this such a great experience with a lifetime of happy memories!

Both Sides of the River Jordan Feb 2020

Recently returned from an AIT “Roots of Your Faith” tour with visits to both sides of the Jordan. WOW! It was amazing! Both the California and Israeli based administrative teams who planned and organized the trip did so with precision and made our way comfortable and easy. We wanted to see “everything” and we did. Yair, our tour guide in Israel, made historical sites and Biblical events come alive with his knowledge, insight and presentation; and he did so in a way that faded the hectic atmosphere of some crowded sites. Our guide in Bethlehem and Emdad in Jordan enhanced our visits as well. The accommodations and hospitality at our hotels and dining rooms was excellent, particularly in Jerusalem and in Aman. Would I go with AIT again? Absolutely, in a heartbeat!

Both Sides of the River Jordan Oct 2019

Yair is guiding us on a wonderful journey through the Holy Lands. Yossi is our super bus driver. Very informative and well organized. So far, very pleased with trip!

Both Sides of the River Jordan Nov 2019

My husband wanted to go to Israel 25 years ago but with young children we hesitated to do so. Now they are grown, so we decided to go and our dream was to make our faith come alive. It was such a blessing to have the opportunity to see, touch and hear all the sounds of life today in Israel and Jordan. There is nothing like seeing the history of the Bible come alive. It is where the old and new come together and it has deeply touched our hearts. A special thank you to our tour guide Lital who shared this experience with us. She gave us just the right amount of historical information but then left us time to contemplate for ourselves as we pursued our truth. So many amazing moments! God bless you Lital and your family, it was a joy to share this experience with you!

Both Sides of the River Jordan Sep 2019

We had a spectacular and memorable adventure with our tour to Israel and Jordan. Every day was special. It was like going to the most incredible history class for 10 straight days, only experiencing everything for yourself. One of the best parts of our journey was our guide, Lital. She helped bring the sites to life in a way I had not expected. If you are thinking about booking this trip, ask for Lital to be your guide. Much love and thanks to all who put on our trip. Ron B.

Israel & Jordan. Rich in Culture, Rich in Heritage.

' src=

Two of the most enchanting and hospitable countries in the Middle East welcome you with open arms. Israel & Jordan have been captivating visitors for centuries and it is time for you to make their acquaintance. Grand desert landscapes, ancient monuments, biblical sites and Bedouin and Arabic influences will mesh together and make these countries your new favorite travel destinations.

Gate 1 Travel knows Israel like no other travel company. Thanks to our longstanding and enduring relationships throughout the country, we can offer an unmatched experience that provides endless insight into its natural and cultural treasures, all at the best value you’ll find anywhere. There are as many reasons to visit Israel with Gate 1 Travel as there are historic and religious sites in this incredible nation, and there are plenty! Right across the border lies Jordan, or officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It sits in the crossroads of Asia, Europe and the Middle East so it has always had an excellent strategic and cultural location. It also lies in what Christians, Jews and Muslims call the “Holy Land.” Gate 1 Travel shows you one of the oldest cities on earth in Amman, the lowest point on land at the Dead Sea and so much more in this country.

Inspiration knows no bounds in Israel & Jordan. Culture, religion and history merge seamlessly within these countries like not many others achieve. We invite you to join us in these nations that Gate 1 knows so well.

Jerusalem : Few other cities in the world boast such a concentration of religious sites like Jerusalem. Many call this city the “Soul of Israel” and it’s easy to understand why. Powerful emblems of faith appear on every corner of the Old City, as you’ll see in the Stations of the Cross that line the Via Dolorosa, or Way of Sorrows. Jesus is said to have walked this road while bearing His cross. This pilgrimage route, and our own walk, ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on the site of His crucifixion. It’s a particularly moving visit, especially if you also pay homage at the place of His birth, Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, and at the Church of the Annunciation in the city of His youth, Nazareth.

In the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem, the Temple Mount crowned by the gilded Dome of the Rock, is said to shelter the Talmudic source of life, the site from which God gathered dust to create man. In Islamic faith, it is the location of Mohammed’s ascent to heaven. It is a symbol of unity, as Gabriel brought Mohammed here to pray with Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. The Western (or Wailing) Wall borders the temple, a pilgrimage site where the devout worship and insert prayer slips of paper in the spaces between the mortar and rock. It is impossible to not be moved by the power of this place. Step outside the Old City for a breathtaking view from Mt. Zion, site of the ancient City of David. Jerusalem’s new city is no less inspiring, as you can choose to discover for yourself. At the Israel Museum, art and archaeology from the country’s millennia of history are on display, none more remarkable than the fourth and fifth-century Dead Sea Scrolls, housed under an impressive white dome. From inspiring to sobering, visit Yad Vashem, Israel’s memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Farther south, the towering massif of Masada tells the dramatic story of 960 Jewish rebels who committed suicide in AD 73 rather than surrender to the Roman Empire.

Tiberias : The River Jordan played a crucial part in Christian theology, as the scene of miracles, battles, and baptisms. Most notably, John baptized Jesus in its waters at a site that we’ll visit. The valley’s fertile history is on rich display and you can unravel it all, during an enriching stay in Tiberias, bordering the Sea of Galilee’s shores. Nearby Beit She’an, a city dating to the 15th-century BCE, invites you to stroll through 5,000 years of history.

Thousands of years of Canaanite, Egyptian, Roman, Arab, Byzantine, and Ottoman history blanket the shores of the Sea of Galilee. There will be ample time to explore Tiberias on your own, perhaps sampling one of its soothing thermal springs. In Safed, a mystical Kabbalah artists’ colony welcomes you, and in the Golan Heights, you may sample special vintages at a kosher winery. Perhaps choose to visit the remarkably historic port city of Acre, or Akko, where echoes of knights and crusaders whisper in Ottoman-era medieval streets. Next, explore the ancient ruins of Capernaum and the fabled spot where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount of Beatitudes.

Haifa & Tel Aviv : The Mediterranean Sea does not spring to everyone’s mind when they think of Israel but some of the country’s most beautiful places grace its sun-kissed coast. The splendid terraced Baha’i Gardens offer magnificent views of Haifa. Mt. Carmel was the spot of Elijah’s sacrifice by fire in which he miraculously ended a drought. In Caesarea, seat of Pontius Pilate and of impressive Roman and Crusader ruins, Herod the Great built a city to rival Rome. With the blue waters of the Mediterranean as their backdrop, these historic sites are all the more magnificent.

If Jerusalem is Israel’s soul, Tel Aviv is its beating heart. This young and vibrant city on the sea never sleeps and offers a fun and fascinating glimpse into the country’s modern lifestyle. Whether you prefer an hour on the beach or an afternoon shopping at the Dizengoff Center, Tel Aviv will not disappoint. By contrast, in the city’s southern districts, Jaffa or Joppa is a wellspring of biblical and rabbinical history.

Red Sea In the south of Israel, the Negev desert stretches to the Red Sea. The desert makes for a mesmerizing drive through arid plains, but it’s not all barren land. At Kibbutz Sde Boker, the first prime minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, retired and passed away. We’ll stop to pay respects at his grave. Farther south, the small town of Mitzpe Ramon sits on the northern ridge of the Ramon Crater. This once-forgotten enclave, built as a camp for the workers who laid the road to the Red Sea, is coming into its own as an eco-tourist destination.

The sea resort town of Eilat is at a geographic crossroads; Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia are all visible from this northern tip of the Red Sea. Our days here are unregimented, with lots of time to swim or snorkel. And there’s plenty more to explore: join optional tours to the magnificent ancient city of Petra or to the Timna Valley, home to incredible rock formations carved by desert wind and the once-active copper mines known as King Solomon’s Mines.

Dead Sea Welcome to the Earth’s lowest elevation on land. This body of water has long been said to have healing and therapeutic powers due to its high content of minerals in the waters. See for yourself while you are visiting the area. Perhaps pamper yourself with treatments or feel free to just enjoy the stunning surroundings on your own, the choice is yours in this incredible setting. No matter which you chose to do while here, make sure to dip your foot in the water or go for a float! Close-by lies the village of Bethany, the site of Jesus’ baptism by John. This is also the place where the prophet Elijah ascended to heaven on a chariot of fire. Bethany and the surrounding area formed the early Christian pilgrimage route between Jerusalem, Jordan River and Mount Nebo.

Mount Nebo Moses is believed to have led his people here after wandering the desert for 40 years with the Israelites. Moses stood here at the summit of Nebo and first viewed the Promised Land of Canaan. This is the reputed burial site of Moses in the bible. Mount Nebo overlooks the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea beautifully and you will be surprised by how lovely this area is. On a clear day, you will be able to view the Dead Sea, Jordan River, Jericho, Bethlehem and the distant hills of Jerusalem.

Madaba The mosaic city of Madaba is where an ancient map of the Holy Land is set into the floor at Saint George’s Church. View this incredible site that is said to have been created in the 6 th century AD in the Byzantine-era style. The map contains the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem. It is comprised of more than two million differently colored individual pieces of stone. The map is not set towards the north like modern maps but faces east towards the altar so that it coincides with the actual compass directions.

Petra Petra will likely become one of the highlights of your trip due to its uniqueness and beauty. This “rose-red” city was hand-sculpted by the Nabateans right into the red desert cliffs in the 3 rd century BC. This group was originally nomadic but decided to settle in a number of places including Petra, Naqab desert in Palestine and northern Arabia. Make your way through the “Siq,” or long winding road, to the incredible Treasury building, or Al-Khazneh, that rises over 140 feet. The place gets its name because many locals thought it might contain hidden treasure within its walls. Continue from the Treasury and discover elaborate royal tombs, a theater and burial chambers, all of which are remnants of the great Nabatean culture that called this place home in ancient times.

Wadi Rum Travel through the alien-like landscape of the Wadi Rum desert, with its ancient river beds, wind-sculpted mountains and vast desert sands. This “Valley of the Moon” was an inspiration, and later filming location, for T.E. Lawrence’s novel, Lawrence of Arabia. This area also served as a filming set for the Star Wars movies, Prometheus, The Martian and more, to serve as the planet of Mars or an alien planet due to its red coloring and surreal landscapes. This incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site will lead you to the eroded sand dunes of sandstone known as “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom.”

Jerash & Amman Start just outside Amman in Jerash, the “Pompeii of the East”. This old city provides incredible insight into the lives of the Romans in one of their more remote outposts. Jerash is the best-preserved example of Roman civilization in Jordan and was part of the Decapolis (ten large Roman cities of the East). View the temples of Zeus and Artemis, Nymphaeum and a street lined with columns or a “colonnade.”

Proceed to Amman, the capital city of Jordan and the cultural hub of the country. It is often referred to as the “White City” due to the limestone used for the buildings. The city has many beautiful ancient sites including the Citadel, located on the highest hill in Amman. Occupied since the Bronze Age, this archaeological site includes the Temple of Hercules and Umayyad Palace. Visit the Archaeological Museum here and discover artifacts that date all the way back to prehistoric times. Next enjoy exploring the city and view the Roman Amphitheater, the souks and the city’s modern district. Quality and value go hand in hand in Gate 1 Travel’s Israel & Jordan. Conclude each inspiring day with comfortable accommodations, delight in local cuisine and gain in-depth knowledge from local guides with a boundless national pride that you’ll find contagious. One thing is certain: whether this is your first visit or your fifth, we’ll show it all to you at a price that beats any other tour operator. Join us in Israel & Jordan !

Anyone done a Gate 1 tour of Israel and Jordan

I have never taken a Gate 1 tour, but looking at one for 13 days for Israel and Jordan for an amazing price.

Can anyone who has taken such a tour comment?

My husband and I have done many Gate 1 Tours to many different parts of the world, but not Israel and Jordan. We have enjoyed every tour and like the people we have met on these trips. Accommodations have always been great and for the most part, the guides have been wonderful. Gate 1 is an inexpensive way to travel to places you might not want to visit on your own.

I've taken 2 Gate 1 Tours, one to Lisbon and Spain and the other to the Balkans. They are a great deal for the money and the itineraries are well thought out.

I just took an Israel and Jordan tour with them in November. I loved it. I would type more but I broke my arm yesterday...so check my bio on this site...there’s a link to my blog and I blogged the trip extensively.

Yes, read Valerie's blog! I have had NO interest in Jordan but her description of their walk in to Petra was jaw-dropping and makes me want to go!

Since she's got a hurt flipper, here's a link to her TR on this forum, but do go to her blog as well!

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/israel-and-jordan-with-gate-one-tours-november-2019

Thank you, Pam! The “hurt flipper” made me smile after my tremendously bad day yesterday:)

Thanks for the response. I believe that we will take the 13 Day Essential Israel and Jordan. Price is fantastic. We will likely do in Feb or March next year. https://www.gate1travel.com/mediterranean/israel/2019/escorted/israel-escorted-13diljoneb20.aspx

I enjoyed reading your blog Valerie. Speedy recovery.

February or March, excellent choice. February can be a little rainy (we always hope for lots of rain), but you'll mostly be in places that get very little rain. Days are longer and temps are generally higher in March, but February is far from cold.

If you can, book extra pre-tour nights in Israel to see some of what the tour misses and to get over the jetlag. The tour you linked to doesn't include Jerash. It's the best sight in Jordan, stay an extra day and take a tour there.

Upon arrival in Tel Aviv , we were greeted by a Gate 1 representative and directed to our shuttle van to the hotel. From the first moment of arrival, Gate 1 took care of us. All flights , accommodations, daily guided sightseeing tours were meticulously planned and on-time. We were impressed with the nice hotels chosen and the included meals were exceptional.

We had a great time with the tour-guide (Doran). He was knowlegable about all sites visited

in Tiberias, Sea of Galilee , Nazareth, Jerusalem , Bethlehem etc. and he enhanced our overall

experience.

I'm usually a do-it-yourself guy when it comes to planning and booking trips. After this experience, I'm kicking myself for not having chosen Gate 1 Travel earlier. This was a NO STRESS, NO HASSLE experience and everything about this trip was much better than expected. Needless to say, we're looking forward to book with Gate 1 again for

our next trip. I highly recommend booking with gate1travel.com.

This is almost certainly self-promotion. Let's flag this as such.

This is a dead giveaway as being a fake review:

<<I'm usually a do-it-yourself guy when it comes to planning and booking trips. After this experience, I'm kicking myself for not having chosen ********* earlier. >>

A good effort, though.

This is far from the first time that we have had a first time poster (and a recently new member) who comes and posts a glowing review of Gate1 Travel - they may have visited the forum often but have never asked a question, etc.

That makes any of these reviews suspect of being advertising that the tour company has encouraged people to post.

There is certainly nothing fake about my review. I can provide all trip documents and proof of travel at Tripadvisor.com request.

' class=

Am looking to book this trip for next year. Can you pls let me know more details of the trip? Do they let you get bauptized the day they take you there? Any additional info would be great

<<There is certainly nothing fake about my review. I can provide all trip documents and proof of travel at Tripadvisor.com request.>>

See, one of the things that doesn't add up is that you're "kicking myself for not having chosen ******** earlier"? Kicking yourself for not having chosen them earlier than what?

Lax--Please go back and reread what Oreet wrote in # 2. From past experience this is one of the people who DID travel with Gate 1 and who are responding to Gate !'s request that people write reviews. There is NOTHING WRONG with that and nothing against the TA rules!

Gate 1 gets some very positive reviews. I saw them in action when I stayed at a hotel where their groups were staying. The participants were very happy and everything looked very well planned and punctual. I think that they would be a good choice for a tour group judging from what I saw and the people I have spoken to.

<<Lax--Please go back and reread what Oreet wrote in # 2. From past experience this is one of the people who DID travel with Gate 1 and who are responding to Gate !'s request that people write reviews. There is NOTHING WRONG with that and nothing against the TA rules!>>

I guess we don't know for sure, but I'll go with your and Oreet's instinct on this one. In that case, it's worth pointing out that OP's review is so unhelpful to the TA readership that it may as well be propaganda by the tour company itself.

There is only one optional tour offered which is the Masada/ Dead Sea tour and we're planning to take it as well.

What types of clothing should we pack for a November trip? Looks like our day-by-day itinerary is packed. Is there some time to explore on our own? Is it safe to do so and what are your recommendations?

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators shut down airport highways and key bridges in major U.S. cities

CHICAGO -- Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked roadways in Illinois, California, New York and the Pacific Northwest on Monday, temporarily shutting down travel into some of the nation's most heavily used airports, onto the Golden Gate and Brooklyn bridges and on a busy West Coast highway.

In Chicago, protesters linked arms and blocked lanes of Interstate 190 leading into O'Hare International Airport around 7 a.m. in a demonstration they said was part of a global “economic blockade to free Palestine,” according to Rifqa Falaneh, one of the organizers.

Traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area was snarled for hours as demonstrators shut down all vehicle, pedestrian and bike traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge and chained themselves to 55-gallon drums filled with cement across Interstate 880 in Oakland. Protesters marching into Brooklyn blocked Manhattan-bound traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. In Eugene, Oregon, protesters blocked Interstate 5, shutting down traffic on the major highway for about 45 minutes.

O'Hare warned travelers on the social platform X to take alternative forms of transportation with car travel “substantially delayed this morning due to protest activity.”

Some travelers stuck in standstill traffic left their cars and walked the final leg to the airport along the freeway, trailing their luggage behind them.

Among them was Madeline Hannan from suburban Chicago. She was headed to O'Hare for a work trip to Florida when her and her husband's car ended up stalled for 20 minutes. She got out and “both ran and speed walked” more than a mile (1.6 kilometers). She said she made it to the gate on time, but barely.

“This was an inconvenience,” she said in a telephone interview from Florida. “But in the grand scheme of things going on overseas, it’s a minor inconvenience.”

While individual travelers may have been affected, operations at the airport appeared near normal with delays of under 15 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Inbound traffic toward O’Hare resumed around 9 a.m.

Near Seattle, the Washington State Department of Transportation said a demonstration closed the main road to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Social media posts showed people holding a banner and waving Palestinian flags while standing on the highway. State authorities urged people to use light rail instead.

About 20 protesters were arrested at the Golden Gate Bridge demonstration and traffic resumed shortly after noon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency said officers were making arrests at two points on the interstate, including one spot where roughly 300 protesters refused orders to disperse,

“Attempting to block or shut down a freeway or state highway to protest is unlawful, dangerous, and prevents motorists from safely reaching their destinations,” the agency said in a statement.

Oregon State Police said 52 protestors were were arrested for disorderly conduct following the Interstate 5 protest in Eugene, Oregon, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Portland. Six vehicles were towed from the scene.

New York Police made numerous arrests, saying 150 protesters were initially involved in the march around 3:15 p.m., but that number quickly grew. The bridge was fully reopened by 5 p.m.

In Chicago, dozens of protesters were arrested, according to Falaneh. Chicago police said Monday that “multiple people” were taken into custody after a protest where people obstructed traffic, but they did not have a detailed count.

Protesters say they chose the location, in part, because O’Hare is one of the largest airports. Among other things, they’ve called for an immediate cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Anti- war protesters have demonstrated in Chicago near daily since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people. Israeli warplanes and ground troops have conducted a scorched-earth campaign on the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli offensive has killed more than 33,700 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead.

Associated Press writers Janie Har in San Francisco, Claire Rush in Portland and Pat Eaton-Robb in Hartford, Connecticut, contributed to this report.

‘We saw an immediate drop’: Jordan’s tourism industry is suffering amid the Israel-Hamas war

Jordan’s economy relies heavily on tourism but since Hamas’ attack on Israel in October and the ongoing war in Gaza, tourism in the country has slowed down. This is also the case in other countries in the region, including Israel itself, Lebanon and Egypt.

  • By Shirin Jaafari

A general view of the ancient city of Jerash, north of the capital Amman, Jordan, Dec. 6, 2023. Jerash is one of the most popular attractions in Jordan behind Petra. It is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside of Italy, and its history goes back more than 6,500 years.

The ancient Roman ruins of Jerash, on the outskirts of Amman, Jordan, represent one of the best-preserved Roman cities.

Here, gladiators once competed in chariot-racing contests as spectators watched from the stone seats.

Dhirar Atmeh grew up in the area.

“When I used to come, and you know, see people come in as tourists, I said ‘this is my thing. This is where I should go,’” he said.

ruins

Atmeh has been working as a tour guide in Jordan for the past two decades. He said that nothing brings him more joy than telling foreign visitors about the long history and the splendor of this site.

But these are tough times for Atmeh and the thousands of others who work in the tourism industry in Jordan and neighboring countries. The war in Gaza has brought his business to a near standstill, he said: “I lost 80% of my job. I mean 80% of my reservations were canceled.”

Tours from the US, Europe and Australia were canceled one after another. People stopped coming.

ruins

Atmeh has five kids and he said he’s struggling to provide for them. For him, what’s happening now brings back difficult memories of the early days of the pandemic, when he lost most of his assets.

“I had a car. I had to sell it. I had a house, I sold it. Many things … I had a piece of land also I sold. So, it wasn’t easy.”

Atmeh said that he’s worried about the weeks and months ahead, as there seems to be no end to the fighting.

Already, Jordan’s unemployment rate, as of last year, was about 23%, according to the World Bank.

man near ruins

If tourists don’t come back, he said, it’s not like he can just find another job.

Tours here are typically part of a package that includes Jordan, Israel and Egypt. Conflict in one of them means that people cancel their whole trip.

Ben Julius is the founder of Tourist Israel, one of the largest tour agencies in Israel.

“From the beginning of the war, we saw an immediate drop, close to zero, from what was expected to be one of the best and busiest periods ever.”

In Israel, flights have been canceled, tourist sites have been closed and hotels have been empty .

ruins

“It’s been very difficult for us. Around 70% of our team — we immediately had to send to furlough again. Many of them only came back into the tourism industry and back into the company in the last year because of the recovery from COVID.”

Julius operates tours in Egypt as well, and he said that they’ve had many cancellations there, too.

In Lebanon, the Christmas season is also shaping up to be a loss this year .

tourists in the ruins

Juliuis is seeing signs of improvement for next year. He said that people are booking their trips in advance.

“That’s giving us a little bit of hope going into next year.”

tourists

Meanwhile, back in Jordan, the minister of tourism, Makram Mustafa Queisi, predicts an even bigger drop in the number of tourists in the coming months if the war doesn’t stop.

“The problem is that people in the West and elsewhere, actually, when they look at the map, they don’t differentiate between Jordan and the neighboring countries. People don’t understand that we are not in a war zone.”

people at a stand

He said he wants to change that perception and help people understand that Jordan is a safe place to visit. When tourists don’t come, he said, that affects a wide swath of the economy.

“We talk about the bus drivers for example, we speak about restaurants, we speak about hotels, we speak about the tour operators, and the people who work with the tour operators.”

For tourism to survive, he said, this region needs stability and security.

man in office

“This aggression has to stop because at the end of the day there’s no winner.”

In the meantime, Jordan is using this unexpected break in tourism to renovate some of its historical sites.

Urgent warning issued against travelling to 16 countries after missile barrage on Israel

Travel advice for top holiday destinations has changed amid warnings about ‘ uncontrollable regional escalation ’ in the Middle East.

Britain’s Foreign Office warned against travelling to parts of the region after Iran deployed at least  300 missiles and drones  towards Israel overnight on Saturday.

Fears of a wider conflict have been rising since October 7 and Israel’s assault on Palestinians in Gaza, and strikes on Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon.

RAF jets were used to shoot down the missiles, part of Iran’s retaliation to Israel’s incineration of a consulate building in Syria on April 1, in which some of Iran’s top commanders were killed.

Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that Israel ‘must be punished and it shall be’, but that the matter can be deemed ‘concluded’. It is yet unclear if Israel is planning to respond with power.

As a result of the rising tensions, the FCDO has updated advice for a number of countries.

People are being urged to take extra care when travelling to:

Saudi Arabia

  • United Arab Emirates

Scroll down for further information on individual countries on the list.

The Foreign Office said: ‘On April 13, 2024, Iran carried out military action against Israel.

‘Monitor this travel advice and other media as the situation is changing fast.

‘Follow and contact FCDO travel on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. You can get email notifications when this travel advice is updated.’

It comes as foreign secretary Lord David Cameron said ‘it is right for Israel not to escalate’ after Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel.

‘Israel has every right to respond as an independent sovereign country being attacked in this way,’ he told Times Radio.

‘But I think we’re very anxious to avoid escalation and to say to our friends in Israel it’s a time to think with with head as well as heart.

‘And in many ways this is a double defeat for Iran. Not only was their attack an almost total failure, but also the rest of the world can now see what a malign influence they are in the region and understand their true nature.

‘And so I think it is right for Israel not to escalate, but obviously they’re a sovereign, independent country and they’ll make their own decisions.’
