Italy’s top gay beach listed as one of Europe’s “best” 40 beaches

Punta della Suina, voted Italy’s top gay/LGBTQ+ friendly beach by Italy’s LGBTQ+ community in 2021 , has been named as one of “40 of the best beaches in Europe” by the UK’s The Guardian Newspaper.

The Gallipoli beach was one of only five Italian beaches to be included in the list (the others were Le Marche’s San Michele, Sirolo, Sa Colonia in Sardinia, Calamosche, Sicily and Sperlonga, Lazio).

Described by the Guardian as “wild” and “idyllic” , the article praised Puglia’s Ionian coast.

“Beaches on Puglia’s Ionian coast have more than a hint of the Seychelles, with multihued water and soft white sand.”

Punta della Suina was also voted our readers’ favorite beach in our 2020 Best of Puglia poll , though our own personal favorite gay beach is Campomarino’s D’Ayala beach.

Other countries whose beaches were listed in The Guardian’s Europe’s 40 Best included Greece, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Montenegro, Portugal, the Netherlands, France, Turkey, Croatia and Albania.

While the Catholic Church pulls back from LGBTQ+ progress, Italy maintains its allure among queer travellers with its dedication to high fashion, sublime pasta and a side helping of male eye candy. On the face of it LGBT Italy looks somewhat downbeat, but squint a little harder and you’ll soon find a diverse range of gay venues suitable for dancing, cruising and indulging in steamy sauna meet-cutes. You can’t go wrong with a city break exploring the religious architecture of Rome or the classy art galleries of Milan but venture outside your comfort zone to see what surprises Italy has in store. From the sizzling beach hangouts of Puglia to the colourful cliff towns of Tuscany, these are our seven favourite places to experience gay Italy.

The best beaches in Puglia cater to all orientations and it can be hard to distinguish between gay and straight locals. All come tanned and scantily dressed, treating the beach as nature’s catwalk and messing with our usually reliable gaydar. For your best chance at meeting like-minded people, venture to the southern part of Puglia known as Salento. Here you’ll find some of the best gay hangouts, with the ultimate gay beach Italy within a short ride of Gallipoli. To get your full kit off in good gay company, travel one hour north to D’Ayala nudist beach.

Besides the region’s beautiful beaches, you’ll find a bohemian vibe touting authentic culture, top-notch cuisine and a growing LGBTQ community, particularly within cities such as Gallipoli and Taranto. Revert to a better, simpler time in the old town of Gallipoli. Its name translates to ‘beautiful city’ and that’s exactly what you grow to expect soon after arriving on the Salento peninsula. 2. Taormina

A hilltop coastal town in the otherwise conservative region of Sicily, Taormina will delight visitors with warm hospitality and fair weather amid protected natural surroundings that lay embedded with ancient ruins. Known as ‘the Pearl of the Mediterranean’ from its elevated position overlooking Mount Etna and the gulf, Taormina Italy is the perfect place to take it easy. Walk with ease through town, passing by the charming shopping streets of Corso Umberto and dining on Sicilian specialities in any of the town’s restaurants, before eventually meeting popular beach spots such as Giardini Naxos and Mazzarò. Isola Bella meanwhile, a protected oasis with crystal-clear lake waters, offers a fun alternative swim spot at the foot of the town.

By day, Taormina keeps us busy with outpost viewpoints in nature peppered with medieval-style architecture and ornate churches showcasing the town’s unique cultural history. Roman and Greek ruins attract many to the area but it is the laid-back atmosphere that keeps us here. At night, the town becomes all the more gay-friendly, particularly at gay bars like Shatulle where both locals and international gather in good company. While gay-run businesses are few and far between, most nightlife in the town is to be considered gay-friendly, with Isoco Guest House holding a great reputation among the LGBTQ+ community.

Sticking to the Sicilian coastline for a second, we make a stop at Catania, another of the region’s more inclusive destinations with its own horde of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and culinary delights beside the sea. Said to be one of the most gay-friendly cities in the region, Catania goes hand in hand with Taormina for gay travellers seeking culture, heritage and low-key partying. A bustling port city made famous by its proximity to Mount Etna and UNESCO-listed baroque architecture, Gay Catania attracts a young and dynamic crowd who breathe life into the old town with rainbow bunting and artsy community spaces. The gay scene here is a lively one, centred in and around Nievki, the meeting point of the queer community. One of the town’s most historic gay hangouts is Via Alessi, an alternative bar and restaurant which has welcomed LGBT people since the 1970s. The climax for gay Sicily and the queer calendar arrives in late June each year when gays and advocates take to the streets for Catania Gay Pride Parade. Make time for St Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, all of which lie close to elegant plazas providing the perfect space for Rome’s classiest bars, restaurants and high-end boutiques

Ah, Rome. How could we not talk about her? So-called capital of the world where art, café culture and ancient history collide in spectacular style, Rome lays down some serious power play. Masculine presenting and tanned to perfection, the city and its people are hard not to crush on. As culture grows more liberal, the vibrancy of the gay community grows with it, allowing for a seductive mix of gay dance parties, saunas and cruising spots among the capital’s many cultural hotspots. Make time for St Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, all of which lie close to elegant plazas providing the perfect space for Rome’s classiest bars, restaurants and high-end boutiques. If you want to keep it casual, take a break with a leisurely slurp of espresso at a curbside café, or picnic in the many serene green spaces across town. A beach day is also an option while in Rome; simply travel southwest for epic sunset views on golden sand beaches, stopping at Ostia, Anzio, Sperlonga or wherever takes your fancy.

Get your introduction to Gay Rome by fanning out east from the Colosseum along Via San Giovanni, a social street lined with gay-friendly bars, clubs and restaurants. Align your visit with the summer-long Gay Village festival, one of the most important events in the city’s gay calendar which sees Parco del Ninfeo and surrounding neighbourhoods become overrun with LGBT street parties, live music, performance art, film screenings and more. On all other occasions, start off in any one of Rome’s highbrow cocktail bars and microbreweries, lowering the tone later on at an underground fetish party, wild gay club or good ol’ fashioned gay disco. 5. Torre del Lago (Tuscany)

One of the more memorable small towns in Italy is Torre del Lago, found in Versilia within the romantic vacation region of Tuscany. With the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the tranquil Lago di Massaciuccoli to the east, Torre del Lago is in a prime place for relaxation, studded with cultural offerings such as heritage museums, manicured gardens and year-round musical tributes to home-grown composer Giacomo Puccini, culminating in the annual ‘Festival Pucciniano’. Tire yourself out with a cycle around town before settling for the night at a boutique hotel or B&B, or alternatively, retreating to the gorgeous Tuscan countryside for a spot of glamping.

Drawing comparisons with Mykonos and Sitges, Torre del Lago is a beachside town offering lush landscapes, rugged coast and a ton of gay-friendly nightlife offerings to keep you busy. Walk the promenade to find the village’s main collection of gay bars, pubs and clubs, an area which serves as both the location of the annual Mardi Gras event and gateway to the town’s biggest gay beach.

Model of the term ‘cosmopolitan city break’, Milan tops the lists of top gay Italy travel destinations, thanks to its status as the high-fashion capital of the world. More than simply a walking advertisement for Gucci, Fendi and Prada, Milan surprises first-time visitors with its raw creative energy and avant-garde culture. Home to the largest – not to mention the most glamorous – gay community in the country, Gay Milan offers a vibrant space for LGBTQ divas and fashionistas from all corners of the globe.

All angles in the city centre nod to some era of architecture; be it art nouveau around Corso Magenta, rationalism in Piazza San Babila or the futuristic skyline shaped by the likes of Zaha Hadid and César Pelli. Move slowly through the city and keep your sights upwards to best enjoy the city’s incredible sights (and look cool while doing so!), but when night comes around it’s time to let loose. While much of the city’s nightlife is gay-friendly, the clubs and bars around the Porta Venezia district are community outposts that host nightly gay-themed events. All pastel hues and lemon-scented breeze, the Amalfi Coast will awaken the romantic within even the most grizzly of bears

7. Amalfi Coast

One more stop, one more UNESCO World Heritage Site to tick off the bucket list. The entire 50 kilometre stretch of the Amalfi Coast running along the southern edge of the Sorrento Peninsula is listed by UNESCO and for good reason. All pastel hues and lemon-scented breeze, the Amalfi Coast will awaken the romantic within even the most grizzly of bears. The atmosphere is another reason to smile, as Amalfi locals are among some of Italy’s most easy-going. The region’s collection of small beaches can be jagged and sloping but that’s just part of Amalfi’s charm, making it easier to grab a private moment on the pebbles! The nearby port town of Salerno, while not a beach town, offers some stunning places to stay in proximity to Amalfi’s best bits.

Moving inland from the coast, you’ll find steep winding roads rising into hills hosting hotels and residences with panoramic views across Positano and Amalfi. Not the most walkable of areas, explore the best Amalfi coast towns with ease by hiring a car or boarding a boat tour, with the latter allowing for a salty breeze with unmatched views of Amalfi’s lemon groves, terraced vineyards and sheer cliffs from afar. Capri Island is another must-see just a short sail away from the mainland, bringing utmost sophistication and tranquillity to the high seas. Despite the gay community here being somewhat spread out leaving the party scene muted, the Gay Amalfi Coast shows itself in small nods of acceptance towards same-sex couples and offers romantic vacations for all. 8 things to know before traveling to Sardinia, Italy

Ferries and resorts fill up during summer when crowds reach Sardinia to make the most of its dreamy coastline. But turquoise waters are just part of the allure. Ancient traditions blend with diverse landscapes on Italy ’s second island, where stretches of fine sand and soaring cliffs surround a mountainous interior covered in Mediterranean scrub.

Whether you are planning a road trip, a through-hike or a tour in search of the hidden coves that dot the rugged coast, here are some things you should keep in mind before visiting Sardinia.

1. Plan for at least a week to visit

Stretching for approximately 270km north to south, Sardinia may appear small on the map, but you’ll soon realize that covering each province could take weeks if you want to see all that this island has to offer. From exploring the ruins left behind by the ancient Nuragic civilization to diving into marine reserves dotting the coast and visiting wineries in the hilly interior, you’ll feel rushed if you plan to squeeze everything in just a few days.

Take at least a full week to travel beyond the highlights and make sure to organize each leg of your itinerary in advance if you are visiting in the high season, as many of the most popular destinations are likely to be fully booked months in advance.

2. Avoid crowds and high prices by traveling during the shoulder season

Traveling to Sardinia in July and August means facing the infamous Italian peak holiday season – this is not just the hottest time of the year, but also the period in which the great majority of Italians take their annual holidays and flock to the coast. Crowds are to be expected, and everything becomes pricier in the middle of summer, from ferry tickets to hotels and car rentals.

Visiting before or after the summer will make your trip to Sardinia much more enjoyable. The island is sunny for much of the year, and the swimming season can start as early as April and runs until October. By avoiding peak summer months, you’ll also have access to affordable accommodation and the chance to move around spontaneously, without too much planning.

3. Don’t underestimate the heat

The heat is not to be taken lightly. Global warming is hitting Sardinia especially hard and record temperatures have been registered year after year – in late July of 2023, the eastern coast of the island surpassed 48°C (118°F), with a high risk of forest fires affecting much of the dry interior.

July and August are the warmest months. If you are visiting during this time of the year, it’s best to avoid hiking or cycling in the middle of the day. Needless to say, always carry plenty of water.

4. Fly or book a ferry to get to Sardinia

Sardinia is well connected to mainland Italy and many European destinations, thanks to three airports – Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero – located on three corners of the island. Cagliari , Sardinia’s capital, is the main entry point, but Alghero has long functioned as Ryanair’s main Sardinian airport, offering frequent low-cost flights year-round.

Flying is not the only way of getting to Sardinia. Ferries depart from the ports of Livorno and Piombino in Tuscany , from Civitavecchia (near Rome ), from Naples and from Palermo , allowing you to take the slow trip across the Tyrrhenian Sea to Sardinia’s eastern coast. Main operators include Moby, Tirrenia, Grandi Navi Veloci and Grimaldi Lines. You also have the option of continuing your overseas journey to Spain by taking the ferry connecting Porto Torres with Barcelona or by heading north to Corsica .

5. Driving is the best way of getting around, but there is a shortage of rental cars

Sardinia has a decent rail network, and buses go where trains can’t. Yet, traveling by public transport is slow and doesn’t allow reaching the more remote areas, where many of the island’s natural wonders are found.

Traveling to Sardinia by ferry means you can take your vehicle with you from mainland Italy. Still, it’s worth comparing the prices of sea transport with those of car rentals, especially if you are visiting in the high season when ships fill up and ticket prices increase significantly.

If you choose to rent a car on arrival during the high season, book in advance. In recent years, Sardinia has experienced a shortage of car rentals, due to a combination of the global ship shortages, the effects of the pandemic on the local economy and the growth in popularity of the island in recent years.

6. Be ready to speak (or listen to) different languages

Sardinia is not just geographically diverse, it’s also linguistically rich. While Italian is spoken everywhere, the local language is Sardinian, a neo-Latin tongue that has been officially recognized as one of Italy’s minority languages and declared endangered by UNESCO. But Sardinian is not the only language spoken by the 1.6 million people living on the island – head northwest to the area of Alghero, and you’ll hear people speak a version of Catalan, a remnant of Spanish domination in the 16th and 17th centuries.

7. Choose between wilderness or hyper-luxury

In the late 1950s, a development project backed by a group of large foreign investors began transforming the rural area of Gallura into one of Italy’s most luxurious holiday destinations. The Costa Smeralda , a 50km stretch of coastline in the northeastern part of the island, is now home to hotels where rooms cost thousands per night, exclusive nightclubs and restaurants, a yacht club, golf courses and dreamy villas hosting international VIPs.

The publicity received by this corner of Sardinia often overshadows its wilder heart, best experienced through long-distance hikes that cross the island’s majestic landscapes. Pack a tent and a sleeping back to tackle multiday trails such as Selvaggio Blu, considered one of Sardinia’s most challenging treks, or the Grande Traversata del Supramonte, running along the Supramonte mountain range in the eastern part of the island.

8. Take it slow and experience Sardinia on two wheels

Low traffic and roads running right by the coast have long contributed to making Sardinia a favorite destination for bike tourists. This has become even more noticeable in recent years as large investments have been put toward improving existing cycling paths and creating new routes for travelers who enjoy exploring on two wheels. Most cities now have bike rental services and the network of dedicated lanes is growing year after year, allowing both locals and visitors to travel safely and sustainably at a slow pace.

These Are the Safest Destinations for LGBTQIA+ Travelers in 2024, According to a Travel Index

The No. 1 spot is a five-way tie between Canada, Malta, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain.

For LGBTQIA+ travelers, safety and inclusivity are important factors in vacation plans, and the latest Gay Travel Index once again sheds light on destinations that exceed expectations, fit the bill, or fall short. Since 2012, Spartacus has used a meticulous rubric for grading and ranking countries from the most queer-friendly to the least, providing a reliable metric — for locals and travelers alike — for which countries are improving, and which are getting worse.

The intensive rating system features 18 categories that range from anti-discrimination laws and transgender rights to oppressive religious influence, prosecution, and the death penalty. Zero points are the neutral mark, with points added or deducted based on human rights — or lack thereof. Both positive and negative, points are weighed against the severity of local law or customs. For instance, countries that still punish homosexuality with the death penalty get more deductions than countries that have the death penalty but don’t act on it.

In a five-way tie for first place this year, as the most queer-friendly destinations with 12 points each, are Canada, Malta, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain, followed closely by Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Norway, and Uruguay. The U.S. earned a lukewarm ranking of 41, with a total of just four points. On the opposite end, the most hostile countries remain Saudi Arabia, Iran, Chechnya, and Afghanistan, all of which still practice the death penalty for homosexuality.

Notable this year was Norway, rising from 17 to 8, thanks largely to its reversal of conversion therapies . Estonia also leapt up from 15 spots to 32, due to the nation legalizing same-sex marriage . Meanwhile, the United Kingdom tumbled from 9 to 21, losing points for diminished LGBT marketing and hostile locals. The U.S. also lost ground, falling from 35 to 41 due to religious influence and hostile locals. Russia took the biggest plummet, from 177 in 2023 to 205, losing an additional five points for its increased prosecutions of LGBT people.

The index also ranks the 50 states individually, with unique-to-U.S. categories like hate crime laws, gay and trans panic defense, and queer infrastructure, while the censorship category reflects the various “Don’t Say Gay”-style laws across the country. With 14 points, New York earns the No. 1 spot for its LGBT protections, lack of censorship and conversion therapies, and concerted efforts put into LGBT marketing and infrastructure. California, Colorado, Nevada, and Oregon are all tied for second, followed by Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Mexico. Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Montana are some of the least queer-friendly states, with Oklahoma in last place for the second year in a row, due to censorship, lack of trans rights, and — as tragically evidenced by the recent murder of non-binary student Nex Benedict — hostile locals.

Located off the coast of Queensland, Australia , the world’s largest reef system is home to 1,600 species of fish, 134 species of sharks and rays, 30 species of whales and dolphins, and 700 species of hard and soft coral.  

If you’re interested in snorkeling, book a day tour with Wavelength Reef Cruises , an eco-certified company that offers smaller group excursions and is owned by local marine biologists. The company visits popular reefs such as Tongue, Opal, and St. Crispin (we spotted dolphins and whales en route), with the skipper picking the best spot based on the day’s conditions. Other companies, such as Quicksilver Cruises , offer excursions where you can choose between scuba diving and snorkeling.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Cairns and Port Douglas, gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, are very queer friendly.  

Where to stay:   The adults-only Pink Flamingo Resort in Port Douglas offers colorful private villas (with an outdoor shower and hammock). Turtle Cove is an adults-only beachfront resort (with clothing-optional sections) for LGBTQIA+ people and allies in Wangetti (about 30 minutes from Port Douglas). The queer-owned Gunnadoo Holiday , with views of the Coral Sea, is near the Daintree Rainforest in Rocky Point.

New York City, New York

New York City ’s history, especially in Greenwich Village, can be explored via Christopher Street Tours, which gives the inside scoop on historic sites and LGBTQIA+ pioneers. We could spend all day people-watching in Washington Square Park, but so many other great sites are nearby: the Stonewall Inn, a historic landmark where the 1969 riots helped launch the gay rights movement ; Marie’s Crisis Café , a classic LGBTQIA+ piano bar (dating back to 1929), where you can belt out show tunes; and Henrietta Hudson for lesbian karaoke and dancing. And don’t overlook the Museum of the City of New York, which details the city’s history and has a moving exhibit on progress for LGBTQIA+ rights.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   NYC has the largest queer population in the United States and is an essential location of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement in the country.  

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

In Cambodia , same-sex activity is legal and same-sex relationships are widely accepted, especially in major cities. The buzzing capital Phnom Penh has a small LGBTQIA+ scene with a few bars and restaurants central to the community.  

For drinks, head to Blue Chilli, the longest running LGBTQIA+ bar in the country, with drag shows, dancing, and cocktails. At Space Hair Salon and Bar , you can get your hair done and your drinks poured in one place; the Pride of Phnom Penh is a bijou music bar with LGBTQIA+ crowds; and the Toolbox is “geared” toward gay men.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Pride week is typically in May. When in temples, make sure to wear appropriate clothing that covers your shoulders (shawls are not permitted in some places). Just as in some other areas of Asia, public displays of affection are not especially encouraged (for any type of couple).

Where to stay:   Arthur & Paul is a spa boutique hotel for men only. Mad Monkey Hostel has dorms and private rooms, plus a beer garden, restaurant, and pool. It also hosts Pride events and gives back to the community through clean water projects and beach cleanups. Palace Gate Hotel & Resort is on the riverfront with sophisticated rooms and a lush pool area.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio , in eastern Brazil , is world renowned for its Carnival celebration but its beaches, mountains, and other natural spaces beckon year-round. Start at Ipanema Beach, a hot spot for the queer community and one of the cleanest beaches in the city (here you’ll find Rua Farme de Amoedo, a famous LGBTQIA+ street with some of the city’s best queer nightlife). Also check out Copacabana Beach, which also has a lively queer crowd, music, restaurants, and bars. Or visit Praiade Abricó beach, the city’s only nudist option.  

LGBTQIA+ lowdown: Rio is the queer mecca of Brazil, priding itself on initiatives like vocational training courses for trans people, anti-bullying projects to support queer students, and legislation outlawing discrimination in the city’s nightclubs.

Where to stay: Praia Ipanema Hotel has modern rooms and balconies with sweeping views of the beach. MGallery Santa Teresa Hotel is a luxury boutique hotel on a historic coffee farm dating back to the 1850s. It boasts a spa and Michelin-listed restaurant. Or try LaSuite by Dussol , a minimalist and modern hotel with views of the beach, the landmark Christ the Redeemer statue, and the Cagarras Islands.

Cape Winelands, South Africa

In addition to hundreds of wineries (including some of the oldest outside of Europe), the Cape Winelands, South Africa , offers expansive estates and historic towns only an hour away from Cape Town . Award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Pinotage are among the varietals at M’hudi Wines , the first entirely Black-owned wine tourism farm in South Africa.

Between Cape Town and the Cape Winelands area, don’t miss Steenberg Farm , the first winery in South Africa to join the International LGBTQ+Travel Association   (IGLTA). Established in 1682, Steenberg Farm has some of the country’s best winery views and Sauvignon Blanc. While touring the wineries, let someone else do the driving with Vine Hopper (Stellenbosch) or the fun Franschhoek Wine Tram .

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   South Africa amended its constitution in 1996 to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation (the first country to do so) and legalized same-sex marriage in 2006. Still, there are ongoing incidents of racism and homophobia, so visit with caution.

Where to stay:   Maison Chablis Guest House is a quaint and inviting country house, with a pool. Queer-owned Holden Manz Wine Estate is a hidden gem where you can enjoy some Merlot or Syrah, and wine and dine in the Franschhoek Kitchen. Sugarbird Manor at Protea Heights Farm has serene views and an amazing infinity pool amid vineyards.

Nova Scotia, Canada

Nova Scotia is known for its rugged coastline, rolling hills, world-famous lobster, outdoor hiking and cycling, lighthouses, and the world’s highest tides. In 2023, it hosted the North American Indigenous Games , bringing together 756 nations to compete and connect through sports across 21 venues.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Nova Scotia is a queer-welcoming destination with Canada’s largest population of trans and nonbinary people and extensive protections for queer people. It also has a wide array of services, including First Love Yourself, Gender Creative Kids Canada, and Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project.

Where to stay: The Pebble Bed & Breakfast has charming rooms overlooking Northwest Arm, an inlet with bright blue waters for boating and fishing. The Wellshire Bed and Breakfast in Lunenburg is in the historic Old Town with a well-tended garden and pond. The Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel is eco-certified and has picturesque views of the water, plus an indoor pool and fitness center.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

A mountain town famous for its mineral springs and Victorian architecture, Eureka Springs, Arkansas , may not be the first place you think of as a queer-friendly destination, but with more than 30 percent of its population identifying as LGBTQIA+, the town is a leader in southern hospitality.  

Millions come for the Great Passion Play, the “Christ of the Ozarks” statue, and Thorncrown Chapel , an architectural gem with 425 windows. According to architect E. Fay Jones, it’s a place to “think your best thoughts.” In downtown Eureka Springs, stroll the Historic Loop, a 3.5-mile (5.6 km) walking tour with 300 Victorian-era buildings. Don’t miss the rainbow steps on North Main Street for a Pride photo spot.  

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Nicknamed the “gay capital of the Ozarks,” Eureka Springs has long advocated for equality. Before the United States legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, Eureka Springs residents formed domestic partnership registries, and the town enacted laws banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender expression.

Where to stay:   Gay-owned options include Magnetic Valley Resort, an all-male (including trans men) retreat in a serene setting, and the pet-friendly Wanderoo Lodge , which has a bar, restaurant, and the town’s largest swimming pool.

Barcelona, Spain

Northern Spain’s only coastal city, Barcelona has it all: history, art, Gaudí-designed landmarks , gastronomy, and Instagrammable sites at every turn. Trendy neighborhood, Eixample, known by the locals as Gaixample for its large LGBTQIA+ community, is great for craft beer bars, art galleries, high-end stores, modernist buildings, and the Arc de Triomf, designed as the entrance to the 1888 Barcelona World Fair. You should also visit the Gaudí houses: Casa Batlló (“House of Inspiration”) and La Pedrera Casa Milà, Gaudí’s last private residence project (completed in 1912), for immersive hologram experiences. Mar Bella Beach (with a clothing-optional section) is popular with the LGBTQIA+ community.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Barcelona, the Catalan capital, is particularly welcoming to the spectrum of the queer community, with multiple LGBTQIA+ events, queer-friendly districts, and inclusive hangouts.

Where to stay: Kimpton Vividora in the Gothic Quarter is a pet-friendly favorite with a pool. Hotel Ohla , in the same area, is known for the 1,000 ceramic eyes on its facade and its Michelin-starred restaurant. The hetero-friendly Axel Hotel in Gaixample is also quite popular with the LGBTQIA+ community and houses Sky Bar, which features a fan of feathers representing diversity

Cologne, Germany

Few places do Christmas markets better than Germany , and the progressive university town of Cologne is no exception. Each market offers a chance to sip warm glühwein, browse handmade arts and crafts, take in ornate decorations, and sample Wiener schnitzel. The biggest and most famous Christkindlmarkt can be found in front Cologne Cathedral, where a giant Christmas tree and pretty overhead string lights set a jolly atmosphere. In the (holiday) spirit of inclusiveness, don’t miss Heavenue , a queer Christmas market featuring sexy St. Nick, live shows, and stalls bursting with color.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Cologne competes with Berlin for the most queer-friendly city in Germany. You’ll find one of Europe’s biggest Pride festivals, two distinct LGBTQIA+ neighborhoods (Rudolfplatz-Schaafenstrasse in the west and Heumarkt-Mathiasstrasse in the east), and lots of queer spaces.

Where to stay: The Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom is a five-star luxury option steps from the Cologne Cathedral. Maison Marsil is a family-owned boutique hotel with lots of character in the heart of the city.

Los Cabos, Mexico

On the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, the Los Cabos region includes the popular towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, connected by the Corridor: 20 miles (32 km) of walkable beaches, golf courses, resorts, and great spots for snorkeling and fishing.  

Visit Cabo San Lucas’s popular Medano Beach, crammed with oceanfront hotels and plenty of places to sip margaritas all day. Just across from the beach, you’ll see the landmark El Arco, a three-story limestone arch where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Take a water taxi to Lovers Beach, a beautiful swimmable spot on the Sea of Cortez side of the arch.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Cabo San Lucas is particularly welcoming, hosting an annual LGBTQIA+Pride march. It’s also home to many inclusive resorts and businesses.

Where to stay:   ME Cabo on Medano Beach puts you near all the action; walk to town or sit by the pool with views of the sea and El Arco, then join the parties along the busy beach strip at night. It also holds the Queer Destinations Committed distinction, an internationally recognized standard of inclusivity for the LGBTQIA+ community.

11 Places In The World Where You Can See Megalithic Structures

• Megalithic structures are fascinating due to their prehistoric origins and mysterious creators. The Carnac Stones in France are surrounded by myths.
• Different places around the world have unique megalithic sites. Argentina has megaliths with engravings, Germany has ancient tombs, and Laos has giant stone jars.
• Sardinia, Italy, and the United Kingdom, particularly Scotland and England, are known for their impressive and ancient megalithic structures like tombs, stone circles, and stone villages.

Megaliths are giant stone structures either standing alone or combined to form a structure or monument. These massive structures are quite peculiar due to their prehistoric backgrounds dating back to the Stone Age.

Also, some of these megalithic structures around the planet are dipped in mystery, as there is no concrete evidence to determine who created them and how they were created. For instance, the Carnac Stones of Brittany in France are surrounded by a myth that they were pagans turned to stones by Pope Cornelius.

That's just one megalithic site, though, and there are hundreds of these sites scattered around the world, with each having its own mysteries. Without further ado, here are some of the many places to see megalithic structures around the world.

Los Menhires Archaeological Reserve, Argentina

These megaliths constructed by the tafi people have engravings that look like human faces, animals, and different objects.

The Los Menhires Archaeological Park in Tucuman province of Argentina is home to around 50 menhirs (standing stones). These stones were constructed by the Tafi people, and they date back to the period between 820 BC and 780 AD .

Although they are not as tall and massive as their counterparts in Europe, these megaliths are unique. They are characterized by different engravings, making them look like human faces, animals, and different objects. In the past, they were used for fertility rites by the Tafi people.

Strasse Der Megalithkultur, Germany

The megalithic structures on this route were built by people who lived in northwest germany 5,000 years ago.

Northwest Germany is home to tons of megalithic structures across a tourist route known as Strasse See Megalithkultur or the Route of Megalithic Culture in English. This route comprises the old towns of Meppen, Oldenburg, Osnabruck, and several other towns, and it stretches for about 330 kilometers.

The route features several archeological sites, which are filled with megalithic tombs. These megalithic tombs are said to have been constructed between 3,500 BC and 2,800 BC.

Phonsavan, Laos

A local legend claims these megalithic structures in laos were built by giants.

Near the town of Phonsavan in Laos is a mysterious megalithic archaeological site that's home to thousands of giant stone jars, named the Plain of Jars of Laos . These jars date to the period between 1500 and 2000 years ago, and no one knows who created them.

Some say they were built by a race of giants, while others claim they were built by a culture that once thrived in the area but has long gone extinct. The exact purpose of these jars is also not known but they are said to either be used for burial rites, to store food, or to brew wine.

Drenthe, The Netherlands

The megalithic structures in drenthe, said to have been built by the funnel beaker people, are some of the most unique in the world.

The Drenthe region of the Netherlands has the highest number of megalithic structures in the country. The region is also known all over the world for hosting unique megaliths known as hunebeds , which are mostly stone tombs (dolmens).

There are about 52 hunebeds in Drenthe, and they were said to have been built by the Funnel Beaker people who once inhabited the region between 3400 BC and 2850 BC.

Indonesia is home to numerous ancient sites with megaliths

While most megaliths are located in Europe, Indonesia does fairly well to represent Asia with a handful of megalithic structures. The country boasts megalithic sites such as Lebak Cibedug Temple, on Java Island, consisting of several megaliths, standing stones, and stone tombs.

Another prominent megalithic site is Gunung Padang also on Java Island and comprises a complex structure of terraces that lay at different angles.

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia hosts a type of megaliths that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
