Travel Trailer or 5th Wheel: What’s Best for Your Road Trips?

Winnebago and Grand Design are famous for quality RV travel trailers. If you want to learn more about both RV brands and their differences, this guide is the right place for you.

Key Takeaways:

The primary distinctions between Winnebago and Grand Design RVs are the RV models, prices, customer service, construction quality, and maintenance. In general, Grand Design RV comes out as superior to Winnebago.

Although this is not mainly an apples-to-apples comparison due to Grand Design only offering non-motorized RVs and Winnebago offering a mix of motorized and non-motorized. We will strive to match and compare the items that matter most to future RV owners and current ones.

Read on to discover the detailed comparison, pros, and cons of both brands to decide which will be better for you.

Quick Brand Overview and RV Types Offered:

If you have ever considered paying cash for an RV thinking you might save some money, sorry to say that is not always the case. I highly recommend reading the following article first.

Can You Get A Better Deal On An RV If You Pay Cash?

Winnebago RV:

Winnebago, which has been around since 1958, is yet another recognizable brand in the recreational vehicle industry. Winnebago Industries is a supplier of a wide variety of RVs.

Motorhomes of the Class A kind, Camper Vans, Motorhomes of the Class C kind,  Fifth Wheels, and Travel Trailers are available. Also, two Class A motorhomes and one Class B motorhome from Winnebago are available with modifications to make them more accessible.

More individuals will be able to experience the freedom of RV travel, whether they wish to hit the road permanently or just take a holiday in their motorhome.

Winnebago offers a wide selection of RVs at various pricing ranges and with various floor plans.

Many cars are capable of towing lightweight travel trailers from Winnebago, like the Minnie, Hike, and Micro Minnie. Winnebago’s Class C View is one of the company’s best-selling RVs. It offers many high-end amenities and is based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis.

Grand Design RV:

One of the most rapidly expanding RV manufacturers, Grand Design has been around since 2012.

Grand Design is an RV factory in Middlebury, IN, that produces RV travel trailers, toy haulers, and fifth wheels.

For both seasoned RVers and newcomers, the company’s Reflection and Imagine lines of trailers and fifth wheels are solid choices. In addition, the company’s lightweight versions of its signature lines are compatible with a wide range of pick-ups and SUVs.

Build quality that can be relied upon is a hallmark of Grand Design products. One reason for this is that a dedicated inspection crew goes through a comprehensive 300-point procedure in addition to the regular factory checks.

RV owners can learn more about Grand Design products and get help with common problems by visiting the company’s online knowledge bases and forums.

Winnebago vs. Grand Design: Complete Brand Comparison

Maintenance and problems: winnebago vs. grand design.

With almost all RVs, you must expect some maintenance hassle.

Both Winnebago and Grand design can have several maintenance problems down the line. After all, we are talking about giant recreational vehicles with complicated systems, just like your car and house. So realistically, don’t expect to have a maintenance-free experience.

For instance, several Winnebago recreational vehicles were affected by separate problems, although only a few models had every issue.

Vehicles like the Fuse, Travato, Journey, Adventurer, etc., underwent several recalls. The majority of the problems were due to a blocked fire extinguisher; however, others were caused by loose roof racks.

Unfortunately, not all recreational vehicles had their solar charging ports fused, while some had their batteries and hydraulic connections incorrectly fastened.

Winnebago recalled the Micro Mini for the 2019-2020 model years due to a faulty axle, despite the fact that it is neither a camper van nor a motorhome. In addition, there was no emergency exit window in the bedroom of the Micro Minnee, which made it hard to get out in case of fire or other emergencies.

The Winnebago 2021 Revel, Vista, and Adventure were all recalled because of a problem with the electric bed. The bed’s motor gears may break, allowing it to expand unpredictably and crash down on people below.

There is still an abundance of 2021 model-year complaints. RV owners have complained about kinked plumbing, a jammed sewage tank, missing panels, and a lack of led lights in their RVs.

Bed frames falling apart and interior materials that don’t stand up to cooking liquids are just two examples of the poor quality control that some customers have reported.

Winnebago’s support staff seems sluggish to catch on to new ideas. As a result, consumers experiencing issues with products costing at least $100,000 are finding it difficult to resolve such issues.

Winnebago has been manufacturing recreational vehicles for a long time. They provide a wide range of sizes and configurations, but not all of their offerings are always good values. However, despite the many recalls, 2018 seems to be the strongest year ever for these recreational vehicles.

Ensure any potential RV you buy passes a thorough inspection. Unfortunately, communicating with Winnebago’s customer care department is not always easy.

Now, like Winnebago, Grand Design RVs also come with their own set of problems. Typically, water leaks, broken appliances, poor wiring, and loose screws are the most frequent issues with Grand Design RVs.

Issues with the slide-out may become more common if there are leaks in the plumbing or the slides aren’t properly greased. With time, your Grand Design RV will also develop a few issues.

In terms of problems, both RV brands are almost in a tie situation (although customer complaints of Winnebago RV are relatively more noticeable in this regard).

But when we talk about maintenance, Grand Design mostly offers RVs in the non-motorized segment. On the other hand, Winnebago offers both motorhomes and towable rigs. Usually, motorhomes are engine-based RVs, so the chances of maintenance occurring can more prevalent.

When comparing just the towable rigs of the two manufacturers, maintenance tasks like occasional electrical or plumbing repairs may be present with both brands.

Build Quality: Winnebago Vs. Grand Design

Overall, Winnebago RVs are claimed to have robust build quality to last longer. But with many customer reports in recent days, as well as the withdrawal of some of the models by the company themselves, Winnebago has a bit of a journey to rebuild RVer’s confidence

In general, Grand Design has a stronger reputation for construction quality than other RV manufacturers. According to our study, Grand Design provides RVs with above-average construction quality.

Customer Support: Winnebago vs. Grand Design

But overall, Winnebago tends to have more maintenance and issues than the grand design. And there are issues with customer support, as explained in the previous section.

On the other hand, if we talk about Grand Design, most customers agree that the company is trustworthy, and they have high praise for the quality of their items.

The firm seems to back its promises and provides excellent after-sale support. In addition, it seems that most of their clients are pleased with their RV purchases.

Cost: Winnebago Vs. Grand Design

To just give you an idea, as a general rule, the cost of an RV tends to be $10k – $300k based on the features of the RV and the type you choose. So in that term, Winnebago is relatively more expensive than Grand Design RVs.

On average, you can expect to spend $179,000 on a Winnebago Camper van. You should plan to pay between $115,000 to $237,000, with $115,000 being the low end.

For those loyal to the Winnebago name but looking for something more manageable than an RV, the Winnebago Camper van is the way to go.

The camper van’s elevated vantage point makes it easier to see twists in the road and see farther in both directions.

You’ll have no trouble handling a camper van if you’re comfortable behind a big SUV or truck wheel.

You can accommodate sleeping, storing, putting away bikes, and stowing away golf bags in a small footprint. You are free to travel anywhere you want and take whatever you like, whether you choose to join a guided tour or hit the open road.

However, Grand Design RVs may cost anywhere from about $30,000 to $160,000 or more.

On the low end of the price spectrum are the Transcend Xplor and Imagine trailers, with fifth wheels from Solitude and Reflection beginning at roughly $75,000 MSRP(manufacturer’s suggested retail price).

Needless to say, if you buy used, you can save yourself a few thousand dollars.

Pros and Cons Of Winnebago

Pros and cons of grand design, what is the consensus of customers about both brands.

We visited different online RV forums to understand and analyze the consensus of other RVers on both of these brands.

As per some RVers, both brands have a fair enough leg-up compared to ordinary brands. They also like some specific features offered by each brand.

For instance, some of them highlighted that they really liked the strong frame offered by Winnebago. But, on the other hand, they also liked the modern look of Grand Design RVs.

In general, according to the reports and personal anecdotes of different RVers, Winnebago doesn’t have an appealing reputation regarding customer support or issues with the RV. In our research phase, we noticed many more complaints about Winnebago than Grand Design RV.

The consensus is that Grand design is preferable to Winnebago these days. If you are looking for a decent brand (but not the top level), then Winnebago is more suitable. However, if you are looking for good RVs, Grand Design is your way to go.

What Do Redditors Think About Winnebago And Grand Design?

The consensus among Redditors is quite mixed. But overall, the general theme of the Redditors’ discussion is that if you are looking for quality, both brands are almost similar. What makes a difference is customer service.

Grand Design is talked about more in the discussion threads as having great customer support.

Redditors also highlight that whichever brand you buy, you can’t get away with the problems of managing your RV issues with dealers down the line. But, in general, Grand design seems to be one of the popular RV brands in recent days since it is more often noticed on roads.

Final Verdict – Which Brand Is Better For You?

In short, unless you are a loyal fan of Winnebago and previously experienced some success using their RVs, it won’t be a great move to go with Winnebago RVs (considering all aspects from quality to customer support).

But let’s say you don’t have a vehicle to tow the trailer, and you want Class A, Class B, or Class C RVs. Your choice is limited to only these two brands. Then of course, you have to go with Winnebago (because Grand Design only makes towable non-motorized RVs).

However, in terms of travel trailers, you can have a great time RVing in a Grand Design as long as you have practical expectations about the build quality or the assistance you get.

With every RV, there will be some problems down the line. However, you should not allow this information to deter you from purchasing any RV. Before making a final choice, it is important to consider your needs and budget carefully and weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each company.

You probably take a lot of pride in your motorhome or travel trailer, as do most RV owners. It’s the door opener to exciting new experiences. It’s like having a home away from home, making you feel relaxed and at ease in any new environment.

Unfortunately, RV problems are pretty much inevitable for anybody who has been on the road for more than a couple of days.

In the end, it’s a mobile home. The technology is impressive, but this is a massive vehicle with a plethora of intricate parts. As a result, there will inevitably be some problems.

To make matters worse, the average cost of RV repairs and upkeep is not exactly pocket change.

Thankfully, we live in an era when a wealth of knowledge on RV upkeep is just a Google search away. Even better, instructional RV repair videos are available on YouTube.

9 Best & 3 Worst RV Brands Out There

If you’re considering buying an RV, you know that they are expensive. And that makes sense; after all, you’re buying a home on wheels. It’s a big commitment, and you owe it to yourself—and your pocketbook—to put in the requisite research. You want to make sure that you get the right RV for you, and from a brand you can trust.

Fortunately, we’re here to help. We’d love to introduce you to the 9 of the best brands, as well as three of the worst, so you can be sure to avoid purchasing an RV from a brand you can’t trust.

These brands are varied; some of them are some of the oldest RV sellers, whereas others are only a decade old or younger. Regardless of their age, however, each of the RV brands examined below has a great track record of designing and selling fantastic RVs. Innovation, quality, and craftsmanship are incredibly important. Keep in mind, of course, that this is our personal list, and you may choose to go with a brand not on this list. Ultimately, trust your gut and your research, as well as user reviews and other actual RV owners. Before buying any RV do a thorough walk-through, ask questions, and see if you can take it for a test drive. Many RVs can be rented, so you can try a model similar to the one you’re interested in purchasing and take notes.

Lastly, we’re listing the brands below alphabetically; each of the 9 is well-established, well-respected, and makes great RVs. Lastly, we’ll conclude with 3 brands we recommend not giving your business.

Alright, on to the 9 best:

Table of Contents

1. Airstream

Airstream is one of the oldest RV manufacturers, and as such, have long prided themself on continually pushing the boundaries and perpetually improving their designs. The original lightweight travel trailers, Airstream campers have long been ingenuitive in their use of space; everything in an Airstream is built with functionality in mind. And this has been true since Airstream’s first models hit the road in the thirties; those earliest models, should you ever get the chance to examine one, are still incredibly functional. It is that functionality that guarantees any Airstream you might purchase will never go out of style, because style isn’t the point of an Airstream. Instead, function is—and few brands are as reliably functional as Airstream.

So if you’re looking for timeless function, modern lines, and no wasted space, Airstream is the brand for you. Beside their travel trailer line, their touring coaches—the Atlas and Interstate lines—combine Mercedes-Benz quality and glamor with Airstream function. Like their travel trailers, Airstream interiors are elegant, well-furnished, loaded with amenities. And you can count on great views; Airstreams specialize in wide window frames, allowing for plenty of scenic views.

2. Dutchmen Brands

Dutchmen in and of themselves are a great RV brand, but they also make RVs under other brand labels. Among those best brands are the following:

  • Dutchmen themselves. One of the best manufacturers in the industry, they produce travel trailers, expandables, fifth wheels, and toy haulers. This brand offers travel trailers with extensive storage space, extreme comfort with a touch of coziness. The design and decor their trailers provide ensures they feels like a home. They are well built in mostly aluminum, and lightweight while producing good quality and reliability. A great number of these travel trailers provide bunkhouse floorplans, ideal for families of numerous occupants. Simultaneously, they are also offered in small sizes and in ideal floor plans for couples seeking comfort in camping. The weight of these travel trailers are average and as such, are most often best towed by a large vehicle.
  • Aerolite is a brand operated by Dutchmen, and offers astonishing travel trailers with up to 10 different floor plans. As the name implies, Aerolite is known for its lightweight builds, as well as for its easy towing and compact designs. Most of the floorplans provide great spacious room and entertainment, as well as extra storage space. The interior design and decor are offered in up to 3 various options to choose from, and essentially appear elegant in style, comfortable, and well furnished. This brand is ideal for any size families and couples seeking lightweight solutions with great living space and an almost luxurious touch without being extreme.
  • Atlas. With the features you’ll find in the Atlas fifth wheel and travel trailers, like the massive kitchen island and ample pantry storage, Master Chef kitchen, and residential-size 60×80 queen beds, you’ll have everything you need to explore the world that awaits.
  • Coleman. This line consists of 5 different models: Coleman Lantern LT, Coleman Lantern, Coleman Light LX, Coleman Light, and Coleman Light Elevated, each providing a range of floorplans to choose from. This brand offers trailers built in extensively aluminum framed walls, residential grade vinyl flooring, and hardwood maple cabinet doors. The style and decor of these trailers provide a warm and cozy feel with an elegant touch. They provide plenty of storage, particularly providing such space as under sleeping beds and in overhead cabinets. A few of these floorplans are designed uniquely and provide up to 2 expandable sofas, further used for extra sleeping space at night and immense living space throughout the day. The average shipping weight of this brand’s trailers starts from 3,000 lbs and works up to 7,000 lbs.
  • Denali. From the moment you step inside either a Denali fifth wheel or travel trailer, you notice functional quality, from storage space to high arched interior ceilings, LED lighting and solid surface countertops to the residential sized queen or king size beds. This is one of Dutchmen’s most popular lines.
  • Kodiak. Think of Kodiak as the love child of Coleman and Denali and you have a pretty good idea what to expect. This, too, is an incredibly popular brand, and offers a range of options to meet you where you are, whether that’s the expandable Kodiak Cub line or the Kodiak Ultimate.

3. Forest River Brands

Forest River owns quite a few brands, many of which have great reputations. Among the most favored are the following:

  • Coachmen is one of their RV lines, bought in 2008. Coachmen has been making RVs for more than 50 years, and that dedication shows in their motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers. With more than 30 options, odds are good they’ll have at least one (if not several!) RVs that might pique your interest.
  • Dynamax.  A longtime trusted brand, legendary product integrity and customer loyalty have combined to result in a new generation of RVs, offering casual, easy living interiors with fresh décor options designed to maximize comfort and value.
  • East to West. While a newer Forest River line, the quality is certainly there: the new Della Terra, for instance, was just awarded both RV Business’ 2019 Top RV Debut and RV Pro’s 2019 Best in Show.
  • Flagstaff. This brand of travel trailers is manufactured by Forest River, built specifically for the benefit of an easy tow with your daily vehicle such as an SUV. The models produced of this brand include: Flagstaff Classic Super Lite, Flagstaff hard side pop-up Camper, Micro Lite, Shamrock, Sports Enthusiast Package, Flagstaff Super Lite, and Flagstaff Tent Campers. Flagstaff E-pro trailers includes various floorplans such as E12RK, E12SRK, E14FK, E15TB, E16BH, E17PR, E19BH, E19FBS, E19FD, and E19QB. The construction of these models includes 6-sided aluminum cage construction, laminated roof and walls, tinted bonded frameless windows, and more. The interior design is very standard and provides efficient comfort for living space. These trailers are ideal for both, families and couples seeking a simple taste and style. The unloaded weight ranges from 1,100 lbs up to 3,200 lbs.
  • Palomino is a long-time RV manufacturer best known for their truckbed campers, but they also produce good quality travel trailers. Both their truckbed campers and trailers are affordable and utilize a lightweight construction with full amenities, as do their fifth wheels, destination trailers, and toy trailers. In general, you can expect an interior design that is immensely well furnished and includes maple hand-glazed cabinetry, which adds a comfortable feel to these lines.
  • Rockwood is similarly known for excellent quality and comfort. Rockwood trailers are offered in various styles and floor plan models, such as Ultra Lite, Rockwood Roo, Mini Lite, and Geo Pro. The difference between these models is the size they come in. Ultra Lite and Mini Lite appear large in length, Geo pro appears small and compact, and Roo provides slide outs. The similarities of these trailers include their relatively lightweight designs, which offer easy towing. The unloaded vehicle weight on these models starts from 1,100lbs up to 6,500lbs. The construction Rockwood provides is mostly aluminum, with great quality cabinetry in solid wood, and extra simple features that make a difference, causing this brand to stand out in the industry. This brand is ideal for those seeking comfort with high-quality design and furnish, but without a preference for high-end luxury.
  • Sonoma is yet another fantastic  brand owned and operated by Forest River, with a wide range of floor plans to fit whatever your needs are. All of their models are mostly aluminum built with laminated aluminum framed floors and walls, an outside shower, overhead cabinets with glass inserts and a laundry chute per floorplan. A characteristic of this brand is its options of bunkhouse floorplans for larger families and kids. They offer extensive comfort space for living, and are ideal for any size family, for those seeking good quality design, and more.

Now 50 years old, Jayco is one of the original names in trusted RVs, offering the same quality assurances now as decades ago. Even now, they still offer a 2-year warranty, twice the length of the industry standard, because they know their products are great and stand behind them in a way most companies simply cannot. Their incredible lineup includes everything from pop-ups to fifth wheels, motorhomes and toy trailers. No matter what you are looking for, odds are good Jayco can offer something that if not exactly what you need and want, sure is close if not better.

Four central tenets help Jayco maintain their status as the best of the best: Quality, in construction, engineering, and industry-leading warranty; family focus, with designs and floor plans that are just as family-centric as they were 50 years ago; awards, including the fact they’ve been America’s best-selling travel trailer 13 consecutive years now; and sustainability, including EcoAdvantage touches on every product and the little things that help you save money and gas mileage.

Newmar was created by RV people for RV people. As a company, they were founded under a singular, distinct vision: to make the best RVs possible. That’s because their founders, Marvin Newcomer and Marvin Miller, knew how much well-made, functional, innovative recreational vehicles mean to the people who own them. They were RV enthusiasts themselves and had experienced firsthand the passion and enthusiasm which a great RV can create.

And that passion shows in their RVs. An Amish and Mennonite company, Newmar takes the same quiet pride in their motorhomes you might expect upon learning their Mennonite and Amish heritage. As they say on their site, “we take pride in every rivet, weld, and mechanical function.”

6. Northwood Manufacturing

Founded in 1993, Northwood is one of the best examples of Pacific Northwest ingenuity, as well as one of the first RV manufacturers to break through the stranglehold the Midwest once had on the industry. Located just outside La Grande, Oregon, beside the scenic Blue Mountains, Northwood RVs reflect the mountains they’re built alongside. Northwood builds sturdy, dependable, truly four-season equipment. Not only do the fully insulated holding tank areas circulate warm area around the suspended tanks to provide protection from freezing in frigid conditions, but the knife valves are also enclosed to protect them from freezing. A combination of rigid foam, batten, and reflective foil insulation helps keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Similarly, Northwood products are designed with energy efficiency in mind, making great use of LED lighting, and offering solar options.

And the interiors are similarly well built. Not only are the cabinets solid wood and beautiful, but they’re anchored to the RV walls, making both the RV and the cabinets stronger. Odds are good the cabinets in whatever Northwood RV you choose may well be better than the cabinets in your home!

7. Oliver Travel Trailers

While lacking the experience of some of these other brands, what Oliver can offer is absolute top-notch construction. For instance, ever Oliver travel trailer is built with four distinct fiberglass shells: two inner shells and two outer shells. This is in addition to the original aluminum frame! As a result, these travel trailers are perfect for four-season living in a way most other brands simply cannot match.

The double hull functions much as double pane windows would, and when combined with the Dometic Penguin 2 furnace that comes standard, the Oliver stays toasty even on the coldest nights. Additional composite materials built into the shells combined with the use of reflective and insulating materials and an air gap between the 2 shells not only helps keep the interior at comfortable levels it also helps to prevent condensation from forming on the inside.

Similarly, the unique double hull construction helps add additional towing stability, and marine-grade components help ensure everything lasts. As Oliver notes, “Even our frame and entry steps are built of aluminum for a ‘No Steel, No Rust, No Maintenance’ factor.” Incredible storage capacity is built seamlessly into the design, and Olivers are designed so that you can live in them off-grid if you so desire as well, with large freshwater and wastewater tanks, a battery bank, two 20-pound propane tanks (which can be upgraded to 30-lb tanks) and even optional solar packages and remote freshwater refill capacity.

8. Pleasure-Way

Pleasure-Way builds custom Class B motorhomes on completed Ford, Chevrolet, and Mercedes chassis’. They have a very high standard for quality control, every single coach made is audited, and every craftsman’s work must meet their rigorous standards and testing. And that sort of quality control comes through in their customers’ experiences; never have I heard a single person badmouth Pleasure-Way, so well-respected are their vehicles.

And with good reason! Not only is everything built to order (there are no construction lines with Pleasure-Way, only craftsmen doing great work), but it is all custom work. On average, it takes six weeks and over four hundred man hours to finish just one Pleasure-Way motorhome! Pleasure-Way’s unique construction process strays very far away from most recreational vehicles manufacturers that mass produce thousands of coaches in a fraction of the time, and that differences results in a higher quality construction.

The construction of Pleasure-Way motorhomes involves measuring, constructing and hand-fitting custom made parts onto each individual chassis. Even though all chassis of a particular make and model, such as Mercedes-Benz or Ram, appear to be identical to each other, there can be slight tolerance differences in the body by up to a quarter of an inch, and Pleasure-Way accounts for those differences with their custom work, by hand fitting and trimming each individual part, from running boards to wall partitions, to perfectly fit each particular coach. Once the specific piece has been custom fit, it will be serialized with that particular coachís chassis vehicle identification number and it will be installed later in the production process to that exact unit.

Oh, and did we mention they’re Canadian? You just get a different level of service with Pleasure-Way. Unfortunately, however, they at this time only make Class B motorhomes.

9. Winnebago

One of the oldest RV brands in the country (first founded in 1958!), Winnebago has more than earned the trust of RVers the world over. Not only are their coaches, fifth wheels, travel trailers, and more all well-built, but Winnebago also offers some of the best after-sale service in the industry, including extended warranties and 24-hour roadside assistance. Additionally, they do a much better job than most RV brands in supporting their customers in finding the right fit for their budget and lifestyle. For instance, they actually run a separate site designed entirely to help RVers determine what they need from an RV in four simple questions : 1)Will it meet my needs? 2) Is it built to last? 3) What happens down the road? And 4) What kind of company stands behind it?

Winnebago can help you answer all four of those questions for yourself, and their wide range of options means you can find what you need, regardless of your budget and travel plans.

For instance, they offer 4 different travel trailers, such as the Minnie Plus and Minnie, ideal for families of 4 occupants, and the Micro Minnie and Minnie Drop, ideal for single or couple adventurers. The floorplans and interior designs of all four models range from simple to average and are ideal for those acquiring a minimal taste in design. These travel trailers are equipped with all necessities for comfortable living. The average weight rating of the Winnebago models start from 2,000 lbs and work up to 6,500 lbs in dry weight. And that’s just their travel trailers!

The 3 Worst RV brands ( In Our Humble Opinion)

As for the worst? The worst RV brands tend not to stay in business very long, fortunately, as people notice when the quality isn’t up to par.

There are a few brands we recommend avoiding, however:

  • Gulfstream. Gulfstream used to have a good reputation; however, in recent years, a number of customers have complained of leaks. That’s not something you want to deal with on your camping trip. After all, isn’t part of the point of an RV getting out of the rain?
  • Fleetwood. Fleetwood again is a manufacturer that once held a great reputation. Now, though, customers are starting to note that their interiors don’t hold up, requiring expensive repairs as the wear and tear is greater than should be but generally occurs after the warranty has run out.
  • Hurricane. Fortunately, Hurricane RVs haven’t been around all that long, and at the rate they’re going, they won’t last long, either. Some customers report it appears as if their RVs were built with repurposed parts, and that’s not something any reasonable person is going to put up with for long.

Grand Design RVs: 11 Facts Owners & Buyers Should Know

' src=

Before purchasing a new RV, it’s vital to inform the facts surrounding the various brands in the RV world.

With the many options available to you, there is one in particular that is worth noting.

Grand design RVs have been around this last decade and have quickly risen to become one of America’s biggest and most trusted brands.

We will look at 11 key facts you should know about Grand Design, and we aim to discuss and explain the burning questions you may have surrounding this RV brand.

The Reason Why Grand Design RVs Are Becoming A Go-To RV Brand:

Grand Design RVs have become incredibly popular. Their creative well-thought-out layouts and affordability, as well as the brand’s attention to detail and utilization of quality materials in their models’ production, have many turning to Grand Design as their go-to brand.

Table of Contents

1. Where Are Grand Design RVs Made?

A popular question that those interested in purchasing an RV from the Grand Design company have is where the various models are produced?

The Grand Design company has more than  40,000 square feet of manufacturing facilities located in Middlebury, Indiana, in America.

These facilities occupy about 67 acres of land in the rural community of this area.

2. Who Owns the Grand Design Company?

Who owns the Grand Design company is another question with an interesting answer.

The company is privately owned and isn’t the oldest on the RV market as it was only established in 2011. Despite its relative newness, the brand has quickly gained the trust and positive recognition of many.

This is partly due to who the company owners are, as each of them has above 25 years of recreational vehicle experience in the RV industry.

In 2011 Don Clark and the brothers Bill and Ron French founded Grand Design, and each of them had a part in creating a company that has become incredibly successful in a short period of time.

Moreover, each of these individuals worked in recognizable companies such as Keystone RVs before deciding to branch out and provide an RV company with the people’s needs in mind.

3. What Types and Sizes of RVs Do Grand Design Produce?

The Grand Design company is known for producing three different types of RVs.

The company owners decided to focus their attention on producing toy haulers, travel trailers, and fifth wheels.

Below we will look at the popular brand names of a few categories belonging to Grand Design.

7. How Are Grand Design RVs Made?

Before we dive into exactly how Grand Design constructs their RVs, it’s important to note that they have a 3-year limited structural warranty to ensure you have the support you need if you encounter any issues with your RV.

Grand Design constructs their RVs slightly differently from the general norm amongst manufacturers. One of the ways the company proves this statement is with how they construct their laminated aluminum framing.

Grand Design laminates their RVs sidewalls and laminates each slide room’s rear wall, roof, and sidewalls.

The roofing utilizes residential-style wood trusses that provide the foundation for the fully walkable roof. With the use of wood trusting instead of aluminum trusting Grand Design RVs have better screw retention, which allows the elimination of metal on metal aluminum connections.

While we’re on the topic of roof construction, let’s have a closer look at what the roofing consists of.

Grand Design RVs utilize TPO roof coverings in the form of a seamless singular roofing piece that will not chalk or streak like the more common rubber roofing options from other manufacturers.

In addition to this, the roofing features an incredible 12-year warranty for your peace of mind.

Other Notable Facts about Grand Design RVs:

The Grand Design RVs are constructed with aluminum entry steps that are rust and bend resistant.

When manufactured, the company has designed the RVs to fully enclosed underbelly for the best possible protection against the elements.

Once construction has been completed, every single RV by Grand Design goes through a 100 percent 250+ point PDI inspection. This quality inspection ensures that the production process was completed to the highest standard so that the consumer receives the best product possible.

All Grand Design RVs are outfitted with heavy-duty tires filled with Nitrofill to extend their lifespan during the production process.

8. What Are The Most Popular RVs by Grand Design?

With the popularity of Grand Design RVs soaring, you may be considering purchasing one yourself.

Luckily, there are many to choose from but to help make the decision easier for you; we have listed three of the company’s most popular RVs:

  • Grand Design Reflection 313RLTS fifth wheel RV. (The Reflection models are the most popular RVs manufactured by Grand Design in North America)
  • Grand Design Solitude 310GK fifth wheel RV.
  • Grand Design Imagine 2150RB travel trailer model.

9. Have Grand Design Had Any Recalls Over the Years?

As with many RV manufacturers, Grand Design has had a few recalls over the years.

However, they have always acted promptly, and with integrity, and with the mindset, the client’s safety is their number one priority.

Below let’s look at a few of the RVs recalled and why they were recalled:

  • NHTSA recall number 15v-518: Reflection 337RLS, 323BHS, 317RST (2014 – 2016) – Recalled due to incorrect axle sizes.
  • NHTSA recall number 15v-822: Momentum 2016 model – Recalled because of incorrect Fed label information regarding unloaded vehicle weight and CCC.
  • NHTSA recall number 20v-523: Solitude fifth wheels (2017-2021) – Issues with the rubber propane supply line coming in contact with the refrigerator cooling unit burner tube on certain gas absorption fridges. Recalled due to concerns that the fridge burner tube’s heat could damage the propane line, create a gas leak, and create a fire hazard.

10. Are All Grand Design Keys the Same?

As with most RV manufacturers, many of the Grand Design entry locks are the same, which has been an issue for some consumers.

You can, however, with relative ease, replace the entry locks with unique keys to ensure your RV and your possessions are kept safe.

Notably, the deadbolt in your Grand Design RV will be a unique key, and it’s unlikely you will need to replace it.

11. Are Grand Design RVs For All Four Seasons?

The majority of grand design RVs are for all four seasons, and there are a few reasons why.

For efficient cooling grand design uses racetrack ducting, which allows for uninterrupted airflow from the front to the RV’s back and vice versa. This feature is available currently in the Solitude, Momentum, and Reflection models, so should you have one of these, you won’t have any issue traveling in warmer climates.

The wood truss roofing on many Grand Design RVs provides additional insulation for those traveling in winter.

Additionally, the materials used in RVs manufacturing by this brand ensure adequate warmth retention inside the RV.

Moreover, many of the Grand Design RVs feature fireplaces, which will ensure a cozy atmosphere, especially during cold weather.

Besides these features, the Grand Design RV company utilizes only the highest quality materials and appliances in their models to make sure that when you purchase an RV from them, it will likely be an investment.

Grand Design’s clam of building a four season RV with enclosed and heated underbelly is far from factual. My first camping adventure with the night temperatures in the upper 20′, the water froze in our Grand Design RV. Upon contacting customer service at Grand Design, I was told that I should have installed various types of protection around the RV to prevent freezing. Also, they denied their underbelly being heated. They DO NOT STAND BEHIND their products!

' src=

I’m very sorry to hear you’ve had this experience. Which Grand Design model do you own?

From my experience, most modern RVs with an enclosed underbelly are designed for extended season camping (early spring to late fall – conditions dependent), not necessarily sustained sub-freezing temperatures. I put together this article on winter RV camping to demonstrate some of the added precautions required when the mercury dips below 32 Fahrenheit: https://blog.campingworld.com/lifestyle-activities/winter-rv-camping-what-you-need-to-know/

7 Things to Know About Winnebago

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on May 8, 2024

The first name in camping has become a name for all RVs. Winnebago has been associated with the recreational vehicle industry for over 60 years. Its long and successful history has created a reputation for dependable vehicles that stand the test of time.

In fact, some use the term “Winnebago” to describe just about any RV today.

But we think the company deserves some specific attention! Let’s see what an American institution representing the RV lifestyle looks like from the inside out.

grand design vs winnebago travel trailer

What Is Winnebago?

Winnebago Industries is an outdoor lifestyle company that manufactures recreational vehicles and boats. It makes Class A, B, and C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels. Plus it also makes pontoons and powerboats.

Winnebago has been a leading builder of vehicles that travel on land and water for more than 64 years. Their brands include Winnebago RV, Criss-Craft, Newmar, Grand Design RV, and Barletta.

The History of Winnebago

Winnebago got its name from the county that manufactured the first travel trailers. John K. Hanson founded the company in 1958 in Forest City, Iowa. To control costs and improve quality, the company began to make its own furniture for its signature trailers. This quickly became a standard practice.

The first motorhome became available eight years after the company’s founding for half the price of its competitors. This of course made Winnebago RVs instantly popular. Soon Class A models like the Brave and Chieftain were seen around the country. By 1973 the manufacturer had released the Minnie Winnie, a 19’ Class C built on a van chassis.

Over the years, Winnebago has followed the trends in the RV industry like producing large diesel pusher Class A vehicles and smaller travel trailers. They were the first to push a Class B van to center stage with their Travato. It was built on a Dodge Promaster chassis. And their newer van, the Revel, has become the off-road vehicle of choice by many.

The company thinks outside the box by routinely contracting with other manufacturers to create new recreational vehicles. For instance, a joint venture with Volkswagen had Winnebago build the German company’s Rialto model. The two produced a diesel-powered RV that crossed the lines between a Class A and Class B vehicle. You’ll still see several on the road today.

By 2016, Winnebago expanded its recreational vehicle offerings by purchasing the existing brand of Grand Design RV. This added high-quality fifth wheels, toy haulers, and travel trailers to their lineup.

And by 2018, the company moved into powerboats. They bought Chris-Craft, a manufacturer of handcrafted premium boats. The following year Winnebago added the luxury motorcoach brand, Newmar, to its stable. Finally, in 2021 they established pontoon boat builder Barletta as another acquisition.

Did You Know: Winnebago also makes Electric RVs! Learn more about their electric model.

With such an established company as Winnebago, sometimes the details get lost in all of the fluff. So we’ve drilled down to the bare necessities to give you seven things to know about America’s most popular RV manufacturer:

1. Who Owns Winnebago?

Winnebago Industries is a publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange using the stock symbol WGO. Michael Happe is the current CEO that overseas Winnebago.

They employ over 2,850 people at four manufacturing facilities and administrative offices.

2. Where Are Winnebago Made?

Winnebagos were first manufactured in Forest City, Iowa, within Winnebago County. As their products grew in popularity, the company opened three other assembly line facilities.

These are located in Charles City, Lake Mills, and Waverly, Iowa. Recently, the company moved its headquarters to Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

3. Are Winnebago RVs Good Quality?

Most RVers would agree that Winnebago products are some of the best recreational vehicles today. Because the company began making its own furniture and RV products for its trailers and motorhomes early on, it could control the quality of such additions to each vehicle.

This also helps them keep prices lower than the competition. That practice has continued as the Winnebago lineup has grown. In fact, some consider the brand one of the top three most dependable RV companies.

4. What Type of RVs Does Winnebago Manufacture?

Winnebago produces Class A vehicles with gas and diesel engines. They also make Class B vans with pop-up tops and some luxurious and accessibility-enhanced model. It also makes Class Cs in various sizes and floorplans. And its travel trailers range from 20’ to 38’ long.

5. What Is the Average Cost of a Winnebago?

Depending upon the type of RV purchased, the prices of a Winnebago model can run from $38,000 to well over $450,000. Travel trailers are usually the least expensive.

They have an average MSRP of around $45,000. The Class A motorcoaches start at $175,000 and run to $450,000 before any upgrades. Finally, the Class B vans range from $115,000 to $205,000 without upgrades.

Winnebago travel trailers lined up for sale in parking lot.

6. What Is the Most Popular Winnebago?

The Winnebago Travato has been the best-selling Class B van for several years. Its popularity stems from its gasoline-powered engine and thoughtful interior design. It has floorplans that include double-duty amenities and built-ins. Due to this, it is the perfect road trip van. It is a great choice for full-time RVing in a small package.

However, a new RV model is inching up the ladder of success. Winnebago’s more recent entry in the Class B market, the Revel, has exploded onto the adventure van sector.

It’s a Sprinter van with a diesel engine. It was built to appeal to travelers who enjoy staying off-grid. Features include bump-outs for more bed space, all-wheel drive, and solar with all the bells and whistles.

7. What Are Winnebago’s Standout Features?

The company has always been known for its customer service and commitment to innovation. Plus, they listen to customer suggestions on design features. This has lead to great additions to newer models. This includes designing more functional interior amenities without taking up more space. In response to full-time travelers, Winnebago created desktops in some of its floorplans.

The craftsmanship on any of their RVs is above the norm, and the company has found a sweet spot in building coaches that allow campers to enjoy the outdoors in a rig that has what they need without what they don’t.

Alliance RV vs. Grand Design: What’s the Difference?

Well-known member

  • Jun 1, 2023

There is very little difference from one manufacturer to another. Most of these trailers are built in Elkhart Indiana, using the same (poor quality) manufacturing techniques, same component suppliers, etc. There are two major parent companies for most trailers. Forest River and Thor. Winnebago might still be its own company but I am not sure. Most names you see on campers are just marketing "brands" of these companies. Grand Design used to be its own company a few years ago but was gobbled up by Forest River, if I remember correctly. Alliance is still its own company, but if it gets too successful it wouldn't surprise me if one of the "big two" doesn't buy them out. A few other independents are Northwood MFG (Arctic Fox), Outdoor RV MFG, Lance. There are also a few high-end 5th wheel manufacturers, these are near custom manufacturers, so be prepared for sticker shock.

The Alliance owners are the ones that founded Heartland RV back in 2005–6. When it got big, it was sold to Thor. So…

Alliance RV vs. Grand Design: What’s the Difference?

Alliance RV vs. Grand Design: What’s the Difference?

If you’re in the market for a new RV, you may be wondering whether to choose an Alliance RV or a Grand Design. Both brands are top-of-the-line, but they do have their differences. In this blog post, we will compare and contrast these two brands to help you decide which one is right for you.

Table of Contents

Differences Between Alliance RV vs Grand Design

Another difference between the two brands is in their construction methods. Alliance RVs use what’s called “unitized construction” which means that the walls, floors, and ceiling of the RV are all one piece. This makes for a very sturdy RV that can withstand a lot of wear and tear. Grand Design RVs, on the other hand, use “stick built” construction which means that the walls and ceiling are separate from the floor. This makes for a lighter RV but one that is not as durable as an Alliance RV.

Differences Between Alliance RV vs Grand Design

Finally, Grand Design RVs come with a lot of standard features that you would have to pay extra for on an Alliance RV. For example, all Grand Design RVs come with LED lighting, stainless steel appliances, and solid surface countertops. So if you’re looking for a luxury RV but don’t want to spend top dollar, a Grand Design may be the way to go. [1]

Alliance RV Overview

Alliance RVs are available in a variety of floor plans and styles to suit your needs. Whether you’re looking for a travel trailer, fifth wheel, or motorhome, Alliance has an RV that will fit your lifestyle. And with plenty of standard features like LED lighting and stainless steel appliances, you’ll be sure to find an RV that has everything you’re looking for. [2]

When it comes to financing an Alliance RV, there are a few options available to you. You can finance through a bank or credit union, through the dealership, or through a private lender. Whichever route you choose, make sure to shop around for the best interest rate and terms before making a decision.

Alliance RV Build Quality

Alliance RVs are known for their high build quality. Alliance RVs are built on a custom chassis and use unitized construction which makes for a very sturdy RV. And with plenty of standard features like LED lighting and stainless steel appliances, you can be sure that your Alliance RV will stand the test of time. If you’re looking for an RV that is built to last, consider an Alliance RV. When it comes to customer service, Alliance RVs have a good reputation. Because the RVs are extremely popular, experienced technicians and knowledgeable staff work on them. If you have an issue with your RV, the business is generally quick to respond and resolve it.

Alliance RV Build Quality

Alliance Warranty

Alliance RVs come with a limited warranty that covers the RV for one year. This warranty includes coverage for the chassis, engine, and drivetrain. Additionally, it covers the structure of the RV as well as any factory-installed appliances and components. If you have any problems with your RV during the first year, Alliance will take care of it.

After the initial warranty expires, you can purchase an extended warranty from Alliance or from a third-party provider. These warranties typically cover major components like the engine and drivetrain for an additional two to three years. So if you’re looking for peace of mind after your initial warranty expires, consider purchasing an extended warranty. [3]

Alliance Customer Support

If you have any problems with your RV, Alliance customer support is typically quick to respond and resolve the issue. However, keep in mind that because Alliance RVs are luxury RVs, they may not have as many dealerships or service centers as other brands. So if you have an issue with your RV, discover where the nearest service center is located.

Alliance customer support can be reached by phone or email. The company also has an extensive FAQ section on their website that can answer many of your questions. Additionally, Alliance has a network of authorized service centers across the country that can help you with any problems you may have with your RV.

Alliance RV Reviews And Ratings

With a good reputation and plenty of standard features, Alliance RVs are typically well-reviewed by customers. On average this brand receives four out of five stars from those who’ve tried them! The company’s reputation for customer service is top notch. If you have any problems with your RV, they are typically quick to respond and resolve the issue without much hassle on their end!

Alliance RV Review: Is It Worth The Money?

Alliance RVs are the perfect blend of luxury and craftsmanship. However, they do not come cheap. Alliance is a solid choice if you’re searching for an RV that will last and has lots of basic features. Although Alliance RVs are luxurious, they might not have as many dealerships or service centers in comparison to other brands. If you have an issue with your RV, knowing where the nearest service center is located is important.

Alliance RV is a fantastic choice if you can afford the high price tag. Before you buy anything, be sure to conduct extensive research and compare costs and features.

Grand Design Overview

When it comes to customer service, Grand Design has a good reputation. If you have any problems with your RV, the company is typically quick to respond and resolve the issue. Although Grand Design RVs provide a luxurious experience, there are generally fewer dealerships and service centers for this brand in comparison to others. Having an RV can be a wonderful experience, but it’s vital to know where the closest service center is in case you run into any issues.

Grand Design RVs have a good reputation and are typically well-reviewed by customers. On average, Grand Design RVs receive four out of five stars. And with plenty of standard features like LED lighting and stainless steel appliances, you can be sure that your Grand Design RV will stand the test of time. If you’re looking for an RV that is built to last, consider a Grand Design RV. [4]

Grand Design Overview

Attention to Detail

One of the things that sets Grand Design apart from other RV brands is the attention to detail that goes into each and every RV. From the moment you step inside a Grand Design RV, you’ll see the difference. Every aspect of the design, from the flooring to the fixtures, has been carefully considered. And it shows.

If you’re looking for an RV that is luxurious, well-built, and comes with plenty of standard features, then Grand Design is a good option.

If you can afford the high price tag, then Grand Design RV is definitely worth considering. Just be sure to do your research and compare prices and features before making a decision.

Grand Design Superior Quality

The first thing that you’ll notice when stepping into a Grand Design RV is the superior quality of craftsmanship. From the moment you walk in, you can tell that no detail was overlooked in terms of design and functionality. Everything from the furniture to the appliances feels upscale and well-made.

On the other hand, Alliance RVs don’t quite have the same level of finish or attention to detail. While they may be more affordable, it’s important to keep in mind that you get what you pay for in terms of quality.

If you’re looking for an RV that will feel luxurious and last for years to come, Grand Design is definitely the way to go.

Are Grand Design Rvs worth the money?

If you’re searching for an RV that will last and has a lot of premium features, Grand Design is well worth considering. However, keep in mind that because Grand Design RVs are more expensive than other kinds of RVs, they may not be represented by as many dealerships or service stations.

Also, because Decatur is home to so many RV manufacturers, there are plenty of service centers and dealerships in the area.

Comparing Grand Design vs Alliance RVs can be tough because they’re both such great brands. However, if you take into account your own needs and preferences, you should be able to decide which one is right for you.

Do your research and take your time making a decision – after all, an RV is a big investment! But ultimately, we’re sure you’ll be happy with whichever brand you choose.

How long has Grand Design been around?

Grand Design was founded in 2011, making it one of the newer RV manufacturers on the market. However, in that short time, they have quickly become a leading RV manufacturer. If you’re looking for an RV from a company with a proven track record, Grand Design is definitely worth considering.

As you can see, both Grand Design and Alliance RVs offer a lot of great features. It really comes down to personal preference when deciding which one is right for you. Be sure to do your research and compare features before making a decision. Whichever brand you choose, you can be confident that you’re getting a great RV.

If you’re looking for a basic model that will still provide all of the features you need on your camping trip, go with an Alliance RV. But if you want the best of the best and don’t mind spending a little more, then go for a Grand Design. Whichever one you choose, we know you’ll have a great time out on the open road!

Winnebago expanding grand design brand, predicts rv industry to improve in spring and summer.

Winnebago's Grand Design brand was all towable recreational vehicles — until now. By next fall, there also will be new motorhome options.

Michael Happe, the Eden Prairie-based company's CEO, announced the new lineup during Winnebago's fourth-quarter earnings call.

"[It] will be a differentiated and complementary offering to our current Winnebago and Newmar brand motorized businesses," Happe said on the call with investors. "We cannot wait to bring these exceptional motorhomes to market, thereby further enriching our portfolio and delighting our valued customers."

The news came as Winnebago works through some hard quarters, as leisure sales overall are down after a pandemic high.

For the quarter ended Aug. 26, the company's net income was down 47% to $43.8 million, or $1.28 a share. Revenue was down 35% to $771 million, a bit below Wall Street expectations. Adjusted earnings of $1.59 a share beat expectations.

For the full year, Winnebago had sales of $3.5 billion, down 30% from a year ago, while net income of $219.5 million was down 45%.

So the introduction of new options is important. Happe said Grand Design teams have already started working on designs as well as the workflow, supply-chain issues and dealer communications for the motorhomes.

Winnebago acquired Grand Design in 2016 when it was the fastest-growing brand in the towable RV segment. As the brand evolves, one piece of good news, Happe said, was a new five-year employment agreement to keep Grand Design's founder Don Clark heading the brand.

Grand Design has yet to announce what kind of motorhome it would introduce. The Winnebago brand produces Class C camper vans and full-sized Class A motorhomes, and the Newmar brand focuses on higher-end luxury full-sized Class A motorhomes.

The company believes that a year from now, the RV industry should be in another upswing.

Despite the tough conditions industrywide, Winnebago has continued to deliver new offerings across its portfolio of recreational vehicles and marine products.

Happe said on the call the company anticipates current market conditions to continue through the winter. In the second half of the fiscal year, though, Happe thinks dealers will be ready to add more to their inventories — a welcoming environment to Grand Design's new offerings.

In other news for the quarter, Winnebago closed on its acquisition of Lithionics, a lithium-ion battery company that will be integrated within Winnebago's products to power the "house" portion of their RVs.

And last week Winnebago and Camping World, the world's largest RV retailer, held a grand opening of a new store in Green Bay, Wis., that will only sell Grand Design RVs.

It's the first store in a partnership between Winnebago and Camping World and could lead to more brand-specific stores that could open under Grand Design or Winnebago banners.

"We are excited to bring a Grand Design exclusive store to our customer community in a new and immersive way," Clark said in a news release.

Shares of Winnebago closed Wednesday at $56.72, down 3.2%.

Winnebago to Acquire Grand Design RV

Press Release

Winnebago Industries, Inc. today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Grand Design Recreational Vehicle Company (“Grand Design”), a manufacturer of towable recreation vehicles (RVs), for approximately $500 million in cash and newly issued Winnebago shares.

Founded in 2012 by Don Clark, Ron Fenech and Bill Fenech, a management team with over 80 years of combined leadership experience in the RV industry, Grand Design is a fast-growing manufacturer in the towables segment with rapidly expanding market share. The Company generated $428 million in revenue over the last twelve months ending August of 2016, representing a compound annual growth rate of over 80% since 2013, and a top tier EBITDA margin of 14%. Grand Design is a portfolio company of global growth equity investor Summit Partners.

The acquisition is expected to be immediately accretive to Winnebago’s growth profile, profit margins and earnings per share (EPS), excluding transaction costs and before giving effect to anticipated synergies. The transaction is expected to close by the end of Winnebago’s first fiscal quarter of 2017, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

“ Grand Design has built a tremendous reputation and position in our industry by delivering quality products and high levels of customer satisfaction, and we are excited to welcome them to the Winnebago family,” said Michael Happe, Winnebago’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Grand Design’s differentiated and nimble approach to serving today’s towable consumer, proven ability to deliver exciting new products and deep industry expertise complement our existing capabilities and Winnebago’s iconic brand. The addition of Grand Design will accelerate our expansion in the towables business, creating a broader and more balanced portfolio well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities across the RV market and to drive improved profitability and long-term value for stakeholders.”

Mr. Happe continued, “I look forward to working closely with Don, along with the rest of the Grand Design team. With a shared focus on quality products, dealer relationships and customer service and satisfaction, together we will be even better positioned to serve dealers and customers well into the future.”

Don Clark, Co-Founder and CEO of Grand Design, commented, “This is an exciting day for Grand Design and reflects the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in our rapid growth and success over the past several years – the Grand Design team, our valued customers and our investors. We have incredible respect for Winnebago and are honored to join an iconic company that shares our dealer-centric, customer-focused

culture. This shared foundation makes our two companies an ideal fit, and we look forward to maintaining our unique identity as an agile competitor as we leverage Winnebago’s strong platform to broaden Grand Design’s reach and deliver the best possible product and service to our dealers and our customers.”

“We are proud to have partnered with Don and the entire Grand Design team and congratulate them on the exciting new partnership with Winnebago,” said Jay Pauley, a Principal at Summit Partners.

(Pro forma metrics represent unaudited financial information)

  • The combined company will have approximately $1.4 billion in pro forma revenue along with a broader and more balanced portfolio well-positioned to deliver growth, improved profitability and value.
  • The transaction is expected to be accretive to Winnebago’s growth profile, profit margins and EPS, excluding transaction costs and before giving effect to anticipated synergies.
  • Annual run-rate cost synergies are anticipated to be $7 million, phased in over three years, to be achieved through identified opportunities in purchasing and the elimination of redundant processes with additional upside potential from sharing of manufacturing best practices.
  • The $500 million purchase price includes tax assets valued at over $75 million. After adjusting for the value of the tax assets, the purchase price implies a multiple of 7.1x Grand Design’s last twelve months EBITDA of $60 million.
  • Winnebago expects to fund the transaction through a combination of $395 million in cash and $105 million in newly issued Winnebago shares. J.P. Morgan has agreed to provide committed financing for the transaction. Upon closing, Winnebago expects to have a debt to EBITDA ratio of approximately 2.5x, inclusive of anticipated annual run rate synergies.
  • The combined company is expected to generate significant cash flow that will facilitate rapid debt reduction. Winnebago expects to reduce its debt to EBITDA ratio to below 1.5x by the end of Fiscal 2018.
  • Immediately following the transaction, Grand Design shareholders will own approximately 14.5% of Winnebago shares outstanding.
  • Don Clark will continue to lead the Grand Design towables business post-closing as its President; he will also serve as a Vice President for Winnebago and be a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Grand Design will operate as a distinct business unit within Winnebago with headquarters remaining in Middlebury, Indiana, and its portfolio of brands will remain in place.
