What is Special About the Gua Tempurung Caves?

Gua Tempurung cave is a remarkable natural wonder; this stunning limestone cave dates back a staggering 400 million years. Millions of years ago, the whole of Kinta Valley was under the sea.

The shells of a vast amount (talking billions ) of tiny marine life were formed into limestone by the pressure of the sea water.

Underwater earthquakes pushed the ocean floor up, forming hills and Kinta Valley.

Millions of years of constant rain and water movement shaped the limestone further.

Stalactites and stalagmites are built up over time by dripping water that contains calcium carbonate particles.

gua tempurung tour 3

Gua Tempurung, located 25km south of Ipoh near Gopeng, is probably the largest cave in Peninsula Malaysia and has plenty to attract the serious caving enthusiast, the adventure seeker or just the casual visitor.

History of the Cave

A lot of work went into creating this massive cave. First of all this entire area, known as the Kinta Valley, needed to be covered by sea.

Billions of microscopic marine organisms had to die and fall to the ocean floor where their tiny shells were compressed into limestone.

Then the ocean floor had to be uplifted from under the sea by massive movements of the earth's crust.

Finally rainfall and flowing water had to work its magic for the next 250 million years or so, carving sinkholes, chimneys and galleries from the limestone rock.

Meanwhile millions of specs of calcium carbonate contained in drops of dissolved limestone coagulated together at an infinitesimally slow rate to create the wonders of stalagmites and stalactites.

That's why we humans have to look after our caves. If we break off a piece of stalactite it won't grow back in our lifetime (they grow at the rate of 1 inch every 200 years on average).

Stalactites near the main entrance of Gua Tempurung.

Apart from limestone, the cave contains deposits of tin, marble and other minerals. There was some small-scale tin mining in the cave at various times over the past century.

During the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), communist guerrillas used the cave as a hideout and some of their graffiti is still visible on the walls.

In 1995 work began to turn the cave into a tourist attraction and steel and concrete staircases were put in place, viewing platforms and railings added for safety and spot lights placed at strategic locations to illuminate the cave's most attractive features.

Facts about Gua Tempurung

The total length of the cave is 4.5km although the part accessible to the public is about 1.9km.

The cave contains an underground river of 1.6km in length.

The cave complex comprises 5 giant domes:

-  Golden Flowstone Cavern  Reaching 90 meters in height, this gallery includes a smoothed stone cascade which looks golden when the river is in flow.

-  Gergasi (Giant) Cavern  Contains a massive 15m high column.

-  Tin Mine Cavern  Excavations left by earlier tin miners can be seen here.

-  Alam (Universe) Cavern  A 72 meter high cavern.

-  Battlefield Cavern  Fallen stalactites and rock formations litter the floor of this gallery including one nicknamed the Fallen Warrior.

Looking back towards the mouth of Gua Tempurung.

Some of these domes are said to resemble coconut shells. Tempurung  is the Bahasa word for coconut shell.

The karst hill above the cave is sometimes called Gunung Tempurung and is about 500m high. Its spectacular size and shape make it clearly visible from the North South Expressway.

The cave is home to bats especially during the mating season from March to May. Their droppings have created bat guano artworks on some the dome ceilings.

How to Get to Gua Tempurung

The location of Gua Tempurung is marked on my interactive map on the  Caves page .  It was easy to find. I exited the North-South Expressway at the Gopeng exit. After the toll gate I turned left onto Federal Route 1 in the direction of Kampar. After 5km I turned left when I saw the large billboard pointing to Gua Tempurung. It was another couple of kilometres from there. There was plenty of parking.

While you are in Ipoh you could  take my walking tour.

The area near the entrance to Gua Tempurung.

Facilities at Gua Tempurung

There was a shop selling snacks, water and souvenirs. They were also renting bicycles at RM6 per hour (RM3 for kids).

Toilets and changing rooms are available.

It is possible to do  white water rafting  on the nearby Kampar River. There are a few adventure tour companies offering packages of shooting rapids and paddling along the Sungai Kampar.

Gua Tempurung- Malaysia’s top limestone cave tour in Gopeng

Gua Tempurung

During my recent visit to Kampar, a small town near Gua Tempurung. I came a day ahead and booked the tour of Gua Tempurung for the next morning.

Gua Tempurung is the largest limestone cave in Peninsular Malaysia.

Gua means cave, and Tempurung is a coconut shell in Malay. Gua Tempurung gets its name from the shape of the surrounding limestone hills that resemble coconut shells.

The cave is divided into four levels. Levels one and two are part of the show cave, with concrete steps and handrails on two sides.  Both levels are also lit up, making it suitable for anyone visiting the cave.

Gua Tempurung

Levels three and four are part of the wet tour, meaning walkways ens here. For casual visitors, the best part of the cave is an underground river run in this part, which spans about 1.6 deep into the cave. The shallow water level allows anyone physically fit to tread along the river and explore deeper into the cave.

On our first day in Kampar, we stayed at Adeline Villa, where we embarked on an exhilarating white water rafting experience along the beautiful Sungai Kampar. Our guide, Along, greeted us at the villa the following morning and set off for our next adventure – exploring the magnificent Gua Tempurung.

1. The Fascinating History of Gua Tempurung

Gua Tempurung is estimated to have formed 250 to 400 million years ago, based on the age of the rock formations in the area. The creation of this vast cave involved a remarkable process. Firstly, the entire area known as the Kinta Valley had to be submerged under the sea. Then, billions of microscopic marine organisms thrived and eventually perished, their tiny shells compressed into the limestone on the ocean floor over millions of years.

Gua Tempurung

Massive movements of the earth’s crust later uplifted the former ocean floor from beneath the sea. Over the next 250 million years, rainfall and flowing water worked their magic. Millions of specks of calcium carbonate in drops of dissolved limestone carve sinkholes and chimneys and gradually solidify to form the mesmerizing stalagmites and stalactites that grace the cave.

We arrived at Gua Tempurung around 9:30 am on a bustling Saturday, and we found the main parking area jam-packed with cars and tour buses. Along decided to use another parking area further from the entrance with ample space.

There is a prominent signboard displaying the various tour options right at the main entrance:

  • Tour 1: This tour takes us to the Golden Flowstone platform halfway along the dry path. It’s an easy yet walk, with concrete pathways and steel staircases, through the dimly lit showcase gallery.
  • Tour 2: If we choose this option, we will reach the Top of the World platform, the highest point in the cave, standing 125 meters above ground level.
  • Tour 3: This is the tour we opted for, encompassing all the features of Tours 1 and 2, with an added short river adventure. The river adventure entails sliding down slippery stones, crawling through holes, and experiencing a thrilling underground river passage on the return trip.
  • Tour 4: The ultimate adventure takes that will take anyone to the cave’s far end. However, it is known to be the most demanding and strenuous option.

We selected Tour 3, a memorable and exciting expedition to this magnificent cave.

2. Exploring the Marvels of Gua Tempurung

Gua Tempurung

Our guide, Along, has taken care of the entrance tickets. Filled with a unique blend of anticipation and trepidation for the unknown, we bravely ventured into the mysterious depths of Gua Tempurung.

Gua Tempurung

The first part is quite easy to walk. The concrete path ran alongside the underground river, revealing marble stones beneath the water and limestone form. We also saw some breathtaking stalactites near the main entrance. There are also marble and other mineral deposits besides limestone.

Gua Tempurung

Initially, the entrance area was bright, but as we moved past the only opening of the cave, it gradually became darker, with dimmed electric lighting throughout the walkway.

There are a few viewing platforms. Soon we arrive at the first one- The Entrance Platform.

a. The Entrance Platform– AIYAHHH

Gua Tempurung

The Entrance Platform has an intriguing name- AIYAHHH, but why it is called is remained unclear.

According to a signboard erected here, water can create huge caves in limestone rocks connected by underground tunnels. Sinkholes formed by water falling through them can carve out deep pools, while stalactites and stalagmites are common cave formations.

Marble is formed when limestone rock undergoes heating and squeezing underground, leading to changes in color and texture.

As we moved towards Platform 1, Along pointed out various rock formations, some resembling animals, but it required imagination to visualize their likeness.

Gua Tempurung

b. Platform 1 – Mr. Bat

Gua Tempurung

This part of the cave serves as the mating spot for bats from March to May each year. Although no bats were seen, as now is not the mating season, bat guano covered the floor bed. The area also boasted intriguing rock formations.

c. Platform 2 – Echo-Echo

gua tempurung tour 3

Throughout the past century, small-scale tin mining has been in the cave. Our guide showcased some tools used for tin mining here.

gua tempurung tour 3

Live stalactites were also present, growing only about an inch in a hundred years. This is precisely why we, as humans, must care for our caves. If we were to break off a piece of stalactite, it would not regrow within our lifetime.

Gua Tempurung

As we walked along the walkway, we noticed inscriptions in Chinese, likely left by the Communists during World War 2. More inscriptions can be found in another nearby cave called Gua Kandu. Throughout the Malayan emergency era from 1948 until 1960, the cave was a hideout and shelter for communists. Even today, evidence of their presence can still be observed through various graffiti adorning the cave walls.

d. Platform 3 – Golden Flowstone

gua tempurung tour 3

Situated in a cozier cave section with lower ceilings, the Golden Flowstone platform derives its name from the rushing underground river flowing over the golden-toned rock, creating a breathtaking sight.

gua tempurung tour 3

Upon reaching Platform 3, which marks the end of Tour 1, we enjoyed the best viewpoint to observe the golden flowstone cavern with huge domes. The area featured many stones with glittering minerals and stalagmites formed by continuous water dripping.

gua tempurung tour 3

e. Platform 4 – Wind Tunnel

gua tempurung tour 3

As the name implies, this part of the walkway is accompanied by a sudden blow of cold wind. Additionally, the area showcases interesting rock formations.

gua tempurung tour 3

f. Platform 5 – Top of the World

gua tempurung tour 3

This part of the walkway reached the cave’s highest point, marking the end of Tour 2. As we approached this platform, we noticed the rock ceiling hovering just a few feet above our head, while far below, the cave floor vanished into darkness. Unfortunately, few photos were taken here; the area is darker than the other platforms.

3. Get Ready for an Exciting Water Adventure

gua tempurung tour 3

Beyond this point, the walkway winds down until we reach a gate, which marks the beginning of Tour 3. From here, the dry tour ends, and we must venture into the cave in its natural state, with no human intervention. As the lights fade, we rely on our headlamps to light the way.

gua tempurung tour 3

We soon arrived at the renowned area of Tour 3, where each of us had to slide down a slippery rock.

gua tempurung tour 3

After the thrilling slide, we descended through a hole in the ground, emerging below the main cave floor, then passing through a tunnel of the cave.

This is where the excitement truly begins, as it becomes dark and wet!

gua tempurung tour 3

While treading the river, we observed many small stalactites hanging from the rock.

gua tempurung tour 3

The underground adventure was awesome! It involved navigating a series of tunnels with water flowing through them. Initially, we walked through shallow water, but as we progressed, we encountered sections where we had to waddle like a duck or crawl. Fortunately, we were well-prepared and rented their comfortable rubber shoes, perfect for wading through water.

4. Capturing the enchanting depths of Gua Tempurung with my mirrorless camera

Gua Tempurung

The space between us and the cave was minimal in some parts, and I even struggled to keep my camera from getting wet. Despite knowing the risks of damage, I decided to carry a mirrorless camera. I anticipated that a mobile phone camera or GoPro wouldn’t do justice to capturing the beauty of this dimly lit environment.

Gua Tempurung

I have successfully captured photos and videos of the darkest part of the cave. If you’re an adventurous bug like me, you’ll be captivated by these stunning images. The video is even more mesmerizing, and I’ve included the link at the end of this article.

We follow the river, which eventually emerges from underground. It brought us back to somewhere near the entrance. I do not know how long we spent inside the cave, but it took roughly 1.5 hours.

Gua Tempurung

The Gua Tempurung trip is one of the best outdoor trips I have been on recently. I recommend anyone who likes nature, like caving and is physically and mentally fit to take one such exhilarating experience.

Gua Tempurung

5. An Exhilarating Outdoor Adventure

Our journey led us along the meandering underground river, resurfacing again, bringing us back near the cave entrance. The sense of time was lost within the cave’s enchanting confines, but we estimated that the expedition lasted around 1.5 hours.

The Gua Tempurung trip is undoubtedly one of the most memorable outdoor adventures I’ve experienced recently. I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on this extraordinary expedition for anyone who loves nature and caving enthusiasts with good physical and mental fitness.

Getting Here & Parking

Gua Tempurung is located far south of Ipoh, about a 45-minute drive from the centre of town. If you have a car to drive here, the parking lot at Gua Tempurung is quite big and parking is free .

There is no bus to Tempurung Cave. Other blogs mention bus 66 from Ipoh to Gua Tempurung, but as of the end of 2020, this route did not seem to exist any more when we were doing our trip planning. Even when it was in service, it was horribly inconvenient: you had to get to Medan Kidd bus station, which is far from any decent hotels, and the drop off point was about 5 kilometres from Tempurung Cave itself.

You should not rely on ride-hailing services like Grab to get to Gua Tempurung either. Tempurung Cave is in the middle of nowhere and no smart Grab driver would be willing to drive all that way for one fare. The only option for those without a car is to hire a driver . This is obviously not the most economical choice for the thrifty traveller, but it is incredibly stress-free: door-to-door service, the ability to leave heavy backpacks in the car, and bottled water provided in a comfortable air-conditioned ride.

Drivers can be hired for half a day. This is enough to get to Tempurung Cave, but if you hire one for the whole day, you can visit other inconveniently located attractions like Kellie’s Castle and Mirror Lake. There are many reputable drivers in Ipoh to choose from who have a respectable command of English. TripAdvisor is a good resource for this, and where we found recommendations for the driver we chose.

We hired a man named Paul Leong , a longtime Ipoh denizen making an honest living in his retired years as a tour guide and driver. He was jovial and knowledgable about the attractions we had planned to see that day. His fee was RM350 for eight hours , from pickup at our hotel at 9 am to drop off shortly after 5 pm. His phone number can be found in the Facebook post above. This number is contactable on WhatsApp and is still correct as of 2020. If you follow the link to his Facebook page by clicking the above image, you can find his email to get in touch, message him on Facebook, or make a booking directly on his page.

When To Visit Gua Tempurung

The usual strategy of coming here on a weekday to beat the crowds might backfire. I’ve read that if Gua Tempurung is too quiet – as in you’re literally the only tourist there – then Tour 2 will be unavailable and you’ll have to do Tour 1 instead. The minimum number of guests that Gua Tempurung needs to have is only 5 persons to open up Tour 2, so this will rarely be an issue. We came on a Monday at 10 am – arguably the quietest period of the week – and there were no problems. Even in the middle of a pandemic, Gua Tempurung had more than enough visitors to meet the 5 person quota. Visiting in the afternoon may have fewer crowds since Tours 3 and 4 do not run after 12 pm. By 2 pm, all of the people in these groups will be cleared out of the dry portions of the cave, and you’ll just have to deal with Tour 1 and 2 visitors.

Gua Tempurung Cave Gopeng Perak

Amenities at Gua Tempurung

There is a convenience store on-site that sells food and drinks, useful for fuelling up before your cave adventure or indulging in some much-needed snacks afterwards. You can also pick up a souvenir to remember your visit in case the memories aren’t enough. Near the parking lot, there were a couple of hawker tents set up. On this day there was a lady selling deep-fried food and a vendor selling drinks and fruit.

There is a toilet across from the ticket booth – two separate rooms with one toilet and a sink for men and women. There was no hook or shelf in the room, so I had to put my rucksack on the dirty floor. The toilet was sitting style, but there was no paper provided. At the sink, there was no soap and nothing to dry my hands with. Most annoying was that there were no lights in the room. When I closed the door, it was too dark to see anything so I had to turn on my phone flashlight and rest it on my backpack for a light source. Clearly, not the most comfortable facilities but there are no toilets in the cave so this is the only opportunity to go.

Gua Tempurung Dry Tour Overview

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cheryl (@charktales)

Tour 2 is completely self-guided and requires no special gear . Without a ranger guide, you are free to go at your own pace and spend as much time marvelling at the cave system as you want. This tour takes you to all five platforms, plus the obligatory entrance platform. Tour 2’s stated duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes round trip is surprisingly accurate. This is almost exactly how much time we took, even with lots of dawdling and long photo breaks. This duration time is not a rule but only an average. You could take twice that amount of time in the cave and no one will kick you out.

Tempurung Cave Dry Tour

The inside of Tempurung Cave is so grand that you won’t ever feel claustrophobic… at least not on the dry tours. The massive caverns have dripping stalactites that loom high overhead, yet are so large that some are beginning to join with stalagmites they have created. The long, unbroken passageway climbs up and disappears deep into the mountain, out of sight. While on the tour, remember to look back behind you periodically so you can get a view of how high you’ve climbed so far.

Gua Tempurung Tour 2 Dry Tour

There is no chance of getting dirty or wet on Tour 2. The walkways are all man-made and raised high enough from the water and muck. Still, you should wear appropriate walking shoes for this tour. It is an hour and 45-minute walk with a lot of stairs along the way, which would not be pleasant if you wore flip-flops to Gua Tempurung.

Gua Tempurung Cave Tour, Golden Flowstone Cavern

Speaking of stairs, Tour 2 at Gua Tempurung could probably be classified as mild to moderate exercise, depending on your fitness level. There are 640 steps to get up to where this tour ends, and the same 640 steps down to get out of the cave. This may sound gruelling, as it’s more than twice the steps of the brutal climb at KL’s Batu Caves, but the journey is broken up with flat stretches and viewing platforms. There will be lots of times when you’ll be resting. Not because you’re tired, but because of the amazing view in front of you.

What To See At Each Platform

Entrance platform – aiyahhh….

Gua Tempurung Cave Tour

After passing through the cave mouth and a short entry tunnel, the entrance platform is first. Built at ground level, it is just above the river that flows out of the cave. I’m not sure why it’s hilariously named “AIYAHHH…!” Perhaps there was an incident before the guard rails were put up when a tourist slipped and fell into the river.

Platform 1 – Mr. Bat

gua tempurung tour 3

The view from the Mr. Bat platform is back toward the cave mouth where you just came from. The limestone up top has been naturally tinged a beautiful seafoam green. The sun streams in through the cracks in the cave, and its daytime blue light brings oceanic colours into the cave. A very photogenic scene.

Despite its name, I didn’t see or hear any bats. They do take up residence at Tempurung Cave, and during the mating season between March and May maybe you’ll be able to spot one.

Platform 2 – Echo Echo

What to see at Gua Tempurung tour 2

Echo-Echo has a stunning view of the Golden Flowstone Cavern. The stairs worm their way into a teepee-shaped section of limestone, bending and snaking upward before disappearing into the bowels of the cave. From here, you can get a sneak peek at the next platform on the tour: a small flat section that reappears after the path enters through the tunnel.

Platform 3 – Golden Flowstone

Tours at Gua Tempurung Cave

Before you get to this platform, keep your eye out for the decades-old etchings in the rock. These are leftover from when communist rebels used Gua Tempurung as a hideout back in the 1950s during the Malayan Emergency. These are easy to miss since some just look like scratches in the rock, but the most obvious graffiti are these mysterious cars. This historic cave art is located at the top of the stairs that enter the teepee-shaped rock.

Graffiti art in Gua Tempurung Cave

The actual Golden Flowstone platform is within a cosier part of the cave where the ceilings are much lower. When the underground river is flowing, it rushes over the golden-toned rock, hence its name.

Platform 4 – Wind Tunnel

Gua Tempurung Cave Wind Tunnel

Platform 4 begins at – surprise! – a tunnel that’s windy! Even being this deep in the cave, you can still feel a refreshing cool breeze blowing through. The wind tunnel goes for quite a ways until you emerge into what looks like the old bones of a whale’s belly.

Platform 5 – Top of the World

Top of the World Gua Tempurung Perak

The “Top of the World” is where Tour 2 ends. The rock ceiling is just a few feet above your head and far down below in the darkness is the cave floor. For the final platform, there’s not much to see here. It is darker here than on the other platforms and chances are you won’t be able to get a decent photo of anything.

Tours at Tempurung Cave

If you’re lucky enough to catch them, the most interesting things at this stop are the geared up adventurers on Tours 3 or 4 descending into the cave’s creepy depths. Their bobbing headlamps give off an eerie glow, getting smaller and smaller before being swallowed up by the blackness of the cave. Once you’re done at this platform, there’s nothing else but to walk back the way you came to the cave entrance.

Saturday Worthy?

If you can find a reliable ride there and back, you should make time to go to Tempurung Cave for whatever kind of tour you fancy. This was an amazing, extensive cave where I felt like I got more than my money’s worth considering how long I spent there. I also loved how the dry tours were self-guided so that I didn’t feel rushed by a guide telling me it’s time to move on to the next stop. I’m already planning for a wet tour the next time I’m in Ipoh!

Bus Route 66 goes again (12/2022). Just go to the local Busstop on Platform 6 and tell the driver to stop at Gua Tempurung. From there it is 3km of Walking. On the way back you can stand at the drop-off street again and just wave the bus or you go a few meters on til the official Busstop. Takes around an hour and drives between 6am til 8pm. For the way to the cave grab can be a possibility as well. We paid around 36RYM one way.

Cool! Thank you very much for the updated info, Cleo!

Gua Tempurung

Gua Tempurung or Tempurung Cave

Located in Gopeng, about 24km south of the capital city of Ipoh in Perak, this limestone cave is one of the largest in Peninsular Malaysia. Though not as big as Niah Cave and Mulu Cave in Sarawak, beginners to caving exploration will be glad to know that this cave is easy to explore.

Gua Tempurung: Explore the Limestone Cave in Perak, Malaysia

Gua Tempurung: Explore the Limestone Cave in Perak, Malaysia

Gua Tempurung is a colossal limestone cave close to Ipoh and an amazing geological marvel. In fact, having been, I would say it’s a must-see for any visitor to the Perak region of Malaysia.

Visitors have several options for exploring Gua Tempurung. Self-guided tours, called ‘dry tours’, allow you to venture to the first three viewing platforms. The ‘wet tour’ involves discovering all five viewing platforms before scrambling through the cave river system.

We opted for the dry tour – number one, which took us as far as platform three and was suitable for those looking for less strenuous adventure. It took around 30 minutes each way to navigate. As you can see from my photographs, Gua Tempurung is impressive and a unique place to spend a few hours.

Table of Contents

Why is Gua Tempurung so special?

Gua Tempurung is special because it is 1.9 km long and 578 m high, making it the largest and most magnificent limestone cave in Peninsula Malaysia. It is concealed within limestone hills and is an intricate system of five massive caverns, each with unique formations of stalagmites and stalactites. The caverns also have different temperatures, water levels, and limestone and marble content depending on their position in the cave.

It is a popular tourist attraction in Perak for adventurers and those interested in geology. It also has a history of being used as a hideout during the communist war; etchings on the walls and rusty shovel heads are evidence of human activity in Gua Tempurung.

Getting To Gua Tempurung

Address: Pusat Pelancongan Gua Tempurung, 31600 Gopeng, Perak, Malaysia

Gua Tempurung is located in Gopeng, Perak. It can be reached from the North-South Highway by exiting through the Gopeng interchange (about 25km south of Ipoh). If you are driving to Gua Tempurung, there is on-site parking. From Ipoh, it is a 30-minute drive.

Which showcave tour should I pick?

If you want to take a quick peek inside Gua Tempurung Cave, the shortest tour you can take is simply called the ‘number one tour’. It will take you to the third viewing platform, where you will be met with a no-entry sign indicating it’s time to turn back. If you want to go on to the fourth and fifth viewing platforms, you will need a ‘number two tour’. These are both dry tours.

You can just turn up for the wet cave potholing tours, but be aware they are very popular. Come prepared with a head torch, as they are not provided. However, we did see a lady selling them from her stall in the car park for £5. Also, wear gloves and shoes with a good grip as the caverns get wet and slimy as you get deeper.

How much do the Gua Tempurung Tours cost?

Self-Guided Dry Tour One (40 mins ++): 8RM Locals / 20RM (£4) non-Malaysians

Self-Guided Dry Tour Two (60 mins ++): 12RM Locals / 30RM (£5) non-Malaysians

Guided Wet Tour Three (2 Hours ++): 15RM Locals / 40RM (£6.50) non-Malaysians

Guided Wet Tour Four (4 Hours ++): 30RM Locals / 50RM (£8.50) non-Malaysians

What time should I visit Gua Tempurung?

Cave tours commence at 9:00 a.m. The last admittance for the wet tours is 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for the dry tours.

Get there when it opens!! We arrived before the cashiers had even pulled up the blinds at the entrance counter, and it was full of people. Luckily for us, most people were there for the water caving adventure tour, known as ‘potholing’ or ‘spelunking’ in the UK and USA, and were being kitted out in helmets and wetsuits. We quickly got in line for our tickets as we wanted to be one of the first inside the cave. Don’t waste time once you arrive, or you might end up at the back of a long queue.

gua tempurung tour 3

Is it dark in the cave?

No. Each cavern on the number one tour is well-lit to help visitors navigate along the walkways. The lighting also illuminates the natural patterns and beauty of the rock formations. I believe the caverns further on are not lit and are a lot harder to navigate.

Angie walking inside Gua Tempurung.

Do I need to be fit to climb the stairs in Gua Tempurung?

If I am honest, it’s not going to suit everyone. There are a lot of metal stairs to climb, and some can be quite slippery, so you need to be sure-footed. We found climbing the stairs tough in places and weren’t alone. Quite a few people were stopping for a breather along the walkways. All the tours start in the same place, but Tour Number One is the shortest, so opt for that if you are unsure about your capabilities.

Is it cold in the cave?

No, the complete opposite. I expected the cave to be chilly, as in other caves I have been in worldwide. Gua Tempurung was warm and humid – in fact, it got a little uncomfortable due to the number of stairs we had to climb in the heat. My tip would be to bring plenty of water and wear light cotton clothes.

gua tempurung tour 3

What can I see on Gua Tempurung tour number one?

Once you have entered the first-level walkway, you will ascend via many metal stairs until you reach level three, where dry tour number one finishes. Along the way, you can view the enormity of the caverns you are passing through.

If you opt to do dry tour number two, you can climb another two levels to viewing platform five.

Along the way, look out for the remnants of metal shovel heads found in the cave. Also, read the information boards, as they will tell you more about the cave’s geological aspects.

metal shovel heads displayed in Gua Tempurung.

How long does it take to complete tour number one?

From start to finish, tour number one in Gua Tempurung takes about an hour. The part that takes the longest is getting back to the entrance the same way you came in.

There will now be a trail of people who have entered after you, heading towards you as you try to return to the beginning. It’s quite hard to get past people on the narrow walkways, and as you can imagine, no one wants to move aside, so if you have a fear of heights, don’t look down!

Where will I get the best view of Gua Tempurung?

When you reach platform two, also known as the Echo-Echo Chamber, for obvious reasons, you will get a superb view of the cave’s karst features and formations.

Intrior of the Gua Tempurung Cave viewed from platform one.

Is Gua Tempurung Worth Visiting?

I would recommend visiting the cave if you are in the Perak region. It is an easy 30-minute journey from Ipoh by bus or Uber. I visited Gua Tempurung and Kellie’s Castle during my transfer between Ipoh and the Cameron Highlands , which worked well as neither of these attractions took too long to see.

Gua Tempurung

Tempurung cave, ipoh overview.

Gua Tempurung is a beautiful limestone cave located in Gopeng in Perak. Popular for caving, it is the largest cave in all of peninsular Malaysia. A part of this 3-kilometer-long cave has been developed as a show cave, complete with walkways and electric lighting. It is quite easy to explore and has a 1.6-kilometer-long river passage running through the hills.

The tunnel of Tempurung Cave is made up of five gigantic domes, the ceilings of which resemble coconut shells; other than this, there are also some spectacular stalactites and stalagmites worth witnessing here. The caves are also well known worldwide for their rock formations and these speleological wonders are found only in this part of the world.

  • The caves are 4.5 kilometers long, while only 1.9 kilometers of it is accessible to the local public.
  • Five huge domes make up the caves, and all of these domes have their own unique calcium formations and marbles, which exist at different temperatures and water levels.
  • All of these caves are located under limestone hills, and they form tunnels that run from east to west.
  • The hills above the cave are known as Gunung Tempurung, and are about 500 meters in height.
  • Thanks to their gigantic shape and stature, they are easily visible from a great distance.

Tempurung cave tour, how to reach tempurung cave.

  • Wear comfortable clothes along with socks and shoes. Clothes made up of poly-pro or wool are the best for caving.
  • Make sure that your shoes have a good grip. Flip flops are a strict no when it comes to caving.
  • It is strongly recommended to wear gloves and kneepads.
  • Put all expensive and important items in waterproof bags so that they don’t get wet or soaked.
  • There is no need to carry food along, since there are multiple local stalls outside Gua Tempurung.
  • All cavers should be free from any allergy related to limestone and bat guano. Additionally, heart patients and claustrophobic people should indulge in only limited activities at the cave. Ensure that you inform the guide beforehand of any similar or related medical condition.
