Visit the Most Haunted Places in Baltimore

Baltimore is no stranger to heartbreak and tragedy, as contagious plagues and disasters have ravaged the town’s history. The spirits that succumbed to these painful deaths have remained close to home, attempting to cling to the life they lost.

Baltimore Ghosts is the ultimate thrilling experience that casts the city’s tourism into a much darker light and creates unforgettable memories at the most historic and haunted locations.

Max’s Taphouse

As a rowdy seaport town, local pubs once held a special place in the city’s culture. Max’s Taphouse, in the harbor-side neighborhood of Fell’s Point, dates back to the city’s early days when it operated as a slaughterhouse and brothel. Aside from an impressive beer selection, Max’s is a must-see for the old building’s otherworldly stories, fables, and haunted history.

The Horse You Came In On Saloon

The Horse You Came In On Saloon, established in 1775, is the oldest continually operating bar in the United States. As if that title isn’t impressive enough, it’s also the only bar in Maryland to have survived Prohibition. The building can tell a tale or two, just like the famed American gothic writer Edgar Allen Poe, who is said to have stopped her before succumbing to a mysterious death.

As another Fell’s Point institution, Rye brings Baltimore’s history to light with its innovative craft cocktail menu. The Prohibition-era drinks and repurposed industrial decor take Rye’s visitors back to when Baltimore got its name as “Charm City.” Its reputation gained from nautical misadventures makes it the perfect spot to hear a local ghost story or two.

Test your bravery, and join us!

What to expect on your baltimore ghost tour.

Baltimore’s rich history and beautiful neighborhoods came with a price. Unearth where soldiers from both sides fell in the gruesome battle of 1812. Many of these vengeful spirits still reside in the narrow houses, inns, and everyday structures that line the cobblestone streets. Traces of the sacrifices that were made remain in this haunted city.

Stand in the gaze of Edgar Allen Poe’s ghost as you walk through one of the oldest ports in the country. The gothic author’s mysterious death still haunts the streets of Baltimore to this day. Whether you believe he was murdered or not, his tragic life resulted in his spirit still being bound to this world. Baltimore’s Fells Point boasts a wealth of grim tales and hauntings that have built up over hundreds of years of riotous history.

Join Baltimore Ghosts to hear all the gruesome details, the human heartbreak, and the haunting spirits of Fells Point. We will take you on a journey to discover the famous and infamous ghosts whose stories shaped the nation.

Why You Should Book Your Baltimore Ghost Tour Tonight!

You Want to Immerse Yourself In The frightful History of Baltimore

THE EXPERIENCES YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT

Preview the most haunted locations in annapolis, james brice house.

Annapolis’ most haunted house, the James Brice House, belonged to John Brice Jr. and Sarah Frisby Brice, who lived luxurious lives as part of Maryland’s elite thanks to John’s position as the city’s mayor. They lived in the home with their sons, James and John, and enjoyed holding numerous balls and receptions. But behind-the-scenes, things weren’t so glamorous. Several family members were said to have struggled with mental illness, leading them to lock sick family members in third story rooms, where they would live out the rest of their lives. Today, visitors to the attic have been known to hear a ghoulish, disembodied voice cry, “I’m not mad!”

John Brice’s grandson, Thomas, was mysteriously found dead in the library of the home. The cause of his death remains unknown. Some of the family’s servants are also said to be lingering on the property as well, though the most famous member of the Brice house is the Crying Girl — the rumored spirit of a young Brice family member who “went mad” in her early teen years and can be heard crying out in anguish.

Middletown Tavern

In 1750, ferry operator Horatio Middleton turned his newly-acquired residence into a tavern, which quickly became a popular spot for locals to enjoy a pint. Middleton Tavern then provided lodging to George Washinton, Thomas Jefferson, and even Benjamin Franklin during the Revolutionary War era. Over 200 years of existence, the tavern has accumulated its fair share of stories — and ghosts. An unknown spirit called “Roland” is known to haunt the first floor dining rooms, in addition to several unexplained shadowy figures that kick around lanterns, tables, and chairs.

The Maryland Inn

Currently holding the title of America’s oldest continually operating hotel, The Maryland Inn has become synonymous with fearsome haunts. Built in 1772, it has 39 bedrooms and suites, with each room said to have come with its own ghost. Frightened guests often complain of smelling tobacco smoke during their stay. The Inn’s most famous ghost is known simply as “The Bride” — a spirit who allegedly witnessed the tragic death of her soon-to-be husband on the day of their wedding. Learn more about one of the country’s most haunted inns, and see for yourself if you could last a night under the careful watch of disembodied Union soldiers.

Welcome to Ghosts of Annapolis

A city whose violent past continues to haunt its present.

At the crossroads of ancient marshlands and the murky waters of the Severn River lies the historic waterfront town of Annapolis, Maryland. But before it was named Maryland’s capital city, Annapolis was already brimming with a bloody history that’s so disturbing, it’s often hidden from tourists who descend upon the city daily to visit its iconic and historic sites. Sightings of phantoms from nearly every era in the state’s history have been reported for generations, from the bloodied apparition of a drunk gambler, to the disembodied figure of a murdered Naval Academy Lieutenant who’s killer was mysertiously…never found.

Today, the city streets are still lined with the same colonial buildings and Georgian mansions that once saw countless deaths, tragedies, and suffering. Beneath the town’s seemingly quaint, historic charm lies years of this haunted history. Join us to discover the secrets behind the violent murders and bloody floggings that once occurred in The Old Annapolis Jail, to the mysterious death of one of the city’s most well-known bachelors. Thousands of the area’s inhabitants have lost their lives under strange circumstances, leading their souls to haunt the capital city to this day.

Annapolis’ Dark History and Bone-Chilling Truths

Affluent politicians, landowners, and wealthy landowners brought their families to Annapolis all throughout the 17th and 18th centuries to take part in the booming tobacco industry. But these society members’ luxurious lifestyles came with a gruesome price tag…human life.

The horrific treatment of enslaved plantation workers by slaveholders led to the suffering of thousands of men, women, and children for well over a century. With Annapolis’ access to the waterfront, the city went on to become one of the Chesapeake region’s earliest slave ports. See for yourself how this thoughtless cruelty and violence came to be in one of the United States’ most haunted towns, including found artifacts used by enslaved Africans practicing hoodoo to

control spirits by housing them inside nkisi bundles to harm the ruthless slaveholders that mistreated them.

Explore Annapolis’ Tormented Past and Current Day Hauntings

From the ghost of butcher Cornelius Brooksby, to the spirit of a young, mourning mother, these souls continue to lurk around some of Annapolis’ most gruesome historical sites. Many visitors have reported seeing ghastly apparitions of spirits who never left the physical realm due to their grief, or, their lust for revenge. This old waterfront town is oozing with dark mysteries, and waits for those brave enough to uncover its spine-tingling secrets.

Walk the eerie streets of the city’s historic district, an epicenter for ghost sightings thanks to its centuries of morbid history. Follow  Ghosts of Annapolis on this bone-chilling excursion while visiting Maryland’s capital city, and see for yourself how a place of bloody war history, pirates, and dark, devious taverns came to be one of the east coast’s most haunted destinations.

6 Reasons to Book the Ghosts of Annapolis Tour Right Now!

1: you want to delve into a more sordid part of annapolis’ history.

As fascinating as it is to see popular destinations like the Waterfront Warehouse and the Crypt of John Paul Jones while visiting Annapolis, you’re only scratching a surface of the city’s past when you choose to ignore its haunted history. Every nook and cranny of this colonial-era town is oozing with chilling mysteries and dark truths that can only be uncovered during an authentic, historically-accurate ghost tour. On this tour, you’ll be able to encounter some of the area’s famous ghoulish inhabitants. You might be able to hear the haunting last breaths of an innocent murder victim, or even the sound of a ghost singing a quiet lullaby, plus other unbelievable stories you won’t find on your typical walking tour.

2: You want to see locations from your favorite ghost podcast in real life

Let’s be honest: we’ve all been sucked into a gripping ghost or true crime podcast at some point in recent years. Why not take your expertise to the next level by traveling to some of these haunted locations in real life? Ditch your cell phone and join us as we experience firsthand the sites of some of the internet’s spookiest viral stories. Multiple stops on this tour have been visited by ghost hunters, travel show hosts, and yes, even podcasters…and for good reason. Even though you can certainly learn a lot from your favorite podcasts, there’s something truly thrilling about actually seeing the settings of these disturbing real-life events in-person — not from the screen of your iPhone.

3: You’re looking for a fun and unique idea for date night

Who says date nights can’t be daring? If you and your significant other are sick of your same old wine, roses, dinner and a movie routine, switch things up with one of Ghosts of Annapolis’s curated one-hour tours. It’s a great way to spend a night out for any couple looking to learn something new, or just bond over the adrenaline-rushing experience of seeing some of Annapolis’ most haunted sites firsthand. Plus, there’s plenty of perks to planning a ghost tour date for your next romantic outing even if you get scared, like the fact that there’s always someone — or something — closeby to hold your hand.

4: You want your night to keep going — way after sunset

Annapolis offers plenty of activities to do during the day. But what should you do at night? If you’re looking to keep your busy day in the capital city going even after the sun sets, look no further than one of our expertly-researched ghost tours. Our tour offers a different kind of night scene, though it still visits some of the city’s liveliest pubs, some of which haven’t been able to get rid of their gholish residents for hundreds of years.

Join us on a bar crawl not meant for the faint of heart, as a tour guide walks you to some of Annapolis’ most haunted taverns. Learn the stories of the spirits that haunt Reynolds Tavern, which is said to have been a favorite of founding father George Washington. Unravel the mystery of Galway Bay Irish Pub and Bar, and listen for the sound of a long-dead man’s footsteps running upstairs. There’s endless late night history to be learned  — even after last call.

5: You want to travel like a local

You’re a unique traveler looking to branch off from the typical tourist destinations Annapolis has to offer. So why miss out on some of Annapolis’ most legendary tales? Learn the terrifying history that locals have passed on for hundreds of years by going on an adrenaline-rushing adventure unlike anything else this historic city has to offer. Wow your friends and family back home with your impressive knowledge of the area’s haunted history, and even make some bone-chilling memories of your own as a souvenir. But don’t worry — if you’re also looking for magnets, tee shirts, and postcards, there’s plenty of gift shops along the way. Because even non-traditional tourists deserve a memento from their travels.

6: You want to learn more about the Chesapeake’s pirates and privateers

You can’t talk about the Chesapeake area without talking about pirates. Pirates ran rampant in the Chesapeake and eastern Atlantic for hundreds of years, with some of the most famous having frequented the city of Annapolis back in the day. Some of these swashbuckling pirates include Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, and Scottish Captain William Kidd. There’s even said to be secret pirate treasure buried on Gibson Island just north of the city — though it has yet to be found. On our tour, you might not find gold, but you will learn all about Hell Point, where for decades sailors have reported seeing the ghastly apparitions of pirates’ skeletons dangling in the cages they were placed in after they were caught.

Picture Fell’s Point, in Baltimore, Maryland, as it was- a rowdy seaport town. It was the birthplace of the sleek and dangerous clipper ship. Its streets were full of sailors from foreign lands spilling off ships and immigrants anxious to start a new life. There were also more than a few ladies of the night looking to make ends meet. Given this explosive combination, is it any wonder that many ghosts remained behind? Join Baltimore Ghost Tours on a walking tour or haunted pub crawl to explore many haunted sites in Fells Point. But don’t stray too far from the group because you never know when you’ll find yourself face to face with the unknown.

History of Baltimore Ghost Tours

The Original Fells Point GhostWalk is a Certified Authentic Baltimore Tour . We are members of the Baltimore Convention and Visitors Bureau and Fells Point Main Street .

When owners Amy Lynwander and Melissa Rowell set out to research ghost stories of Fell’s Point, they started knocking on doors, talking to residents and bar owners, and combing through documents at libraries. Their findings were revealed during The Original Fell’s Point Ghost Walk Tour in October 2001. A couple of years later The Original Fells Point Haunted Pub Walk debuted.

In July, 2005, they published their first book of Baltimore ghost stories, Baltimore’s Harbor Haunts: True Ghost Stories .

While researching their book, the duo uncovered stories from Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood and began the process all over again to create a new haunted walking tour, the Mount Vernon Ghost Walk Tour , which debuted in September, 2007. In 2016 The Mt Vernon Haunted Pub Crawl made its debut.

Explore the Ghostly Past of These 13 Haunted Places In Maryland

' data-src=

Are you ready for a spine-tingling adventure? Look no further than the haunted places in Maryland !

From the “Not So Spooky Ghost Tours” in Allegany County to the haunted homes and graveyards in Caroline County, there’s plenty of paranormal activity to discover. Take a walk through the historic streets of Frederick, known as the most haunted city in Maryland, or dine with a ghost at Adam’s Ribs restaurant in Calvert.

With so many eerie experiences to choose from, it’s the perfect time to explore the haunted side of Maryland.

13 Haunted Places in Maryland

Allegany county/cumberland.

Taking a show on the road and putting the “fun” into funeral, a theatre group in Allegany County, The Mountain Side of Maryland, escorts participants of the “Not So Spooky Ghost Tours” on a guided walking tour through Cumberland’s favorite haunts.

These family-friendly tours are offered on Thursdays in October.

montgomery history

Montgomery County

While you won’t find the Lizzie Borden House or Stanley Hotel here in Montgomery County , Maryland, we do have our own hotbeds of paranormal activity.

Head to one of these haunted sites and you might find yourself face to face with a spirit from the past: Beall-Dawson House, Clara Barton National Historic Site and The Maryland Mine .

Look for Mrs. Mary Patterson who haunts her historic home at Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum .

Dine with a ghost at Adam’s Ribs restaurant . In 1980 a woman by the name of Nancy was murdered at the establishment. She is thought to haunt the restaurant. Employees frequently report strange occurrences.

The incidents at the restaurant grabbed the attention of the Smithsonian, who sent people out to check for signs of paranormal activity.

Caroline County

Denton, the seat of Caroline County , is one of the most haunted towns on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Around the Courthouse green are five haunted properties including the jail, where “Shep,” the ghost of a man sentenced to hang, continues to roam, St. Elizabeth and St. Luke’s graveyards.

One so haunted that some locals won’t walk on that side of the street at night. There’s also Emerson House , Towers House , and Taylor House .

haunted house maryland tours

Often billed as the “ most haunted city in Maryland” Frederick is full of eerie experiences and haunted happenings. Are you a believer? See for yourself at some of the city’s most historic spots!

The National Museum of Civil War Medicine has a host of ghostly activity.

Given the nature of the museum and its former life as an undertaking business, it is no surprise that strange sounds are often heard in parts of the building where no one is working.

Employees of the museum have reported objects move by themselves or disappearing and then appearing again with no explanation.

Just down the street, the home of one of Frederick’s most famous residents is also known to be mysterious. An elderly Barbara Fritchie waved her union flag out the window of her home as Confederate troops passed on the street below, inspiring the popular poem “The Ballad of Barbara Fritchie”.

Witnesses report that the historic rocking chairs in the house often rock on their own. Lights can be seen flickering from the street outside long after the house has been closed and locked.

Perhaps most haunting is the impression of a woman often found on Barbara’s bed first thing in the morning.

Another building with a long and somewhat troubled history is Frederick’s City Hall . At this site in 1765, nearly seven years before the Boston Tea Party, Frederick citizens burned effigies of British officials in protest of the Stamp Act.

The present building was constructed as the Frederick County Courthouse in 1862, after the previous courthouse burned down in 1861. This building became Frederick’s City Hall in 1985 when a new county courthouse was built nearby.

A great way to visit all of these stops and many more of Frederick’s most eerie, is with a ghost tour through historic Downtown Frederick.

Woven through historical accounts and true documented stories of the paranormal, master storytellers dressed in period attire from Frederick’s past lead visitors through the city’s dark streets and alleyways in search of the infamous, the unknown and the unexplained.

Guests will uncover politically savvy and defiant citizens, patriots from the Revolutionary War, beckoning soldiers from the Civil War, and so much more.

Annapolis Ghost Tours: Explore the City's Dark Side

haunted house maryland tours

There are some Annapolitans who walk the same hallways, to and fro, never leaving the house. They peer out windows, sometimes giving a little wave to passersby. They stomp, they moan, they throw things about...they are bored to the point of torture and tortured to the point of boredom.

I’m referring, of course, to the happy haunts that have been roaming Annapolis’ historic sites for hundreds of years. You can hear more about these spirits’ stories and explore the city's darker side on these Annapolis ghost tours.

WATERMARK TOURS

haunted house maryland tours

Watermark , a mainstay of Annapolis tours, has three spooky options: Special Historic Hauntings, Historic Ghost Tour, and Spirits & Spirits. Special Historic Hauntings runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings in October. This is a walking tour, where you will visit many of Annapolis’ haunted sites. The tour offers exclusive access to the Hammond Harwood House garden after hours so you can hear a 20-minute presentation on the supernatural connections of this historic site.

Historic Ghost Tours begin Saturdays in November. It is so easy to fall under the spell of these spooky stories with your guide, in period dress, leading you through cobblestone streets by candlelight.

haunted house maryland tours

Spirits & Spirits …because of course Annapolis has a ghost tour on a boat! This tour runs on Fridays and is a hybrid boat/walking tour. By sea, you’ll hear tales of pirates, Naval Academy ghosts, and nautical myths. By land, you’ll hear historic and haunting tales of downtown landmarks. And yes, as the title of this tour implies, you are welcome to purchase “spirits” from the onboard concessions on this tour! Due to the popularity of this tour and the small group size (14), this tour is often sold out.

ANNAPOLIS TOURS & CRAWLS

The W alking Ghost Tour (runs Tues. through Sun.) is PG and family-friendly if you book the 7:00 PM option. However, the more scandalous R-rated version runs at 9:00 PM. Your lively and informative tour guide will regale you with tales of naughty, troubled, and dark spirits who linger here, with a nice dose of history mixed in.

haunted house maryland tours

If you want to “drink in the history, crawl out the door” (as their website describes it), then the Haunted Pub Crawl is for you. This 2-hour pub crawl will show you a secret side of historic Annapolis pubs. At each stop, you’ll have time to order drinks and chat with your tour-mates, while also hearing tales of some cheeky spirits who refuse to leave their favorite pubs.

HAUNTED HARBOR TOURS

Aloysius Martin, owner and tour guide of Haunted Harbor Tours , warns you not to bring your children on this tour. He also wants you to know that his company is “not responsible for any possessions, hauntings, lingering spirits, injuries, or creeping madness which may occur during or following the tour.” This tour is not messing around.

haunted house maryland tours

On this 90-minute ghost tour (which runs nightly), Martin shares tales of hauntings, witches, murder, torture, and other truly horrifying historic tales. These are not just any folklore tales; Martin is passionate about historic research and bases all his tour material around historic documents like court records and newspaper archives. If you want to be scared witless, but with a focus on history, this tour is for you. And if you attend on Halloween, be sure to wear your costume—the best costume will win a deck of tarot cards on this special tour!

So if you’re tired of haunting your own house this Halloween season, grab your friends and brave the dark streets of Annapolis for a safe, fun, and unique tour experience!

The 10 Most Haunted Places in Maryland

Maryland, a state steeped in history and known for its scenic coastlines, is also a hub for paranormal activity. This article guides you through the most haunted places in Maryland, where historical events and supernatural tales intertwine, creating an eerie yet fascinating narrative.

From the infamous Goat Man of Fletchertown Road to the spectral soldiers of Antietam Battlefield, each location harbors its unique ghostly story. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a ghost hunter, or just curious about the paranormal, prepare to uncover the spectral secrets of the Old Line State.

1. Point Lookout Lighthouse, Scotland

Point Lookout Lighthouse in Scotland MD

In Scotland, Maryland is one of the most haunted locations in the state, Point Lookout Lighthouse. Point Lookout has been home to countless tragedies and disasters.

The area served as a prisoner of war camp, a hospital during the Civil War era, a hotel destroyed by a fire, and a lookout point during the Revolutionary War.

In 1830 construction on the Point Lookout Lighthouse was completed and it became a functional lighthouse.

In the years since its construction, the lighthouse has been home to an extraordinary amount of hauntings. A man in Civil War-era clothing is one of the most frequently seen ghosts.

He is said to be in horrible physical shape, smells of gunpowder and mildew, and it is believed he was attempting to free himself from the Smallpox unit that once stood in the area.

Another ghost is that of an elderly woman who appears to be looking for something on the beach. It is believed she is looking for a missing gravestone.

Within the lighthouse people have captured voices on their recorders, ghosts of wounded Union soldiers have been spotted and temperatures drop dramatically.

2. Fletchertown Road, Bowie

Fletchertown Road in Bowie MD

Fletchertown Road is the home of an urban legend. It is said that the Goat Man lurks in the area. According to stories, the Goat Man escaped from the Department of Agriculture Research Center.

As the name suggests he is supposedly half-human half-animal.  The urban legend goes on to say that for two decades, the 1950s and 60s, the Goat Man murdered people who traveled the road with an ax.

After murdering them he would eat his victims. To this day people claim to have seen the head of a goat, or a man in tattered clothing in the area.

3. Dr. Samuel A. Mudd’s House, Waldorf

Dr Samuel Mudd's House in Waldorf MD

Dr. Samuel A. Mudd was the doctor that treated John Wilks Booth for his broken leg after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. John Wilks Booth received treatment at Dr. Mudd’s home.

Believing he was a co-conspirator in the assassination of President Lincoln, Dr. Mudd was tried and ended up spending years in prison. Thanks to his wife’s tireless efforts, Dr. Mudd received a pardon from President Andrew Johnson and returned to his home.

Dr. Samuel A. Mudd’s house is now a museum and historical sight. Stories claim to see Dr. Mudd’s ghost wandering his property and the home.

Other claims have stated the bed where Booth slept will show the impression of a body in the bed.

The museum is open from spring – fall from the hours of 10am – 4pm. Admission is is $10 for adults, and $3 for children. Unfortunately, there are no ghost tours on offer, but there are guided tours of the home included in the admission fee.

4. Baltimore County Almshouse, Cockeysville

The Baltimore County Almshouse in Cockeysville, MD

When the Baltimore County Almhouse opened in 1874 it was to serve as a home for the elderly, the mentally unwell, the indigent, and children. An addition was made to the Almhouse which housed prisoners.

People who have spent any time at the Almhouse have made claims of assorted paranormal activity. Some people claim that if you visit the third floor you may hear the voices of women talking.

Other people have stated that they have heard the sound of children in the building playing.

Further claims state that it is possible to see the faces of children not only in the windows of the house when standing outside but throughout the interior.

You can visit the building as it’s the home of the Historical Society of Baltimore County. Run by volunteers, the entrance fee is $5, and it’s open Fridays 10 AM to 2 PM, and Saturdays 10 AM to 2 PM.

9. Antietam Battlefield, Sharpsburg

Antietam Battlefield

The Antietam Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland, is a site that bears the scars of one of the bloodiest battles in American history.

On September 17, 1862, the Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee clashed with the Union Army led by General George McClellan in a day-long battle that resulted in over 23,000 casualties. This gruesome event, known as the Battle of Antietam, is remembered as the bloodiest single-day battle in the Civil War and in U.S. history.

The battlefield is marked by several significant locations, such as Bloody Lane, the Cornfield, and a stone bridge over Antietam Creek, where some of the most intense fighting took place.

Visitors to the site often report eerie experiences, such as the sensation of being watched, hearing phantom gunshots and drumming, and even seeing apparitions of soldiers. The battlefield, now part of the National Park Service, serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and is considered one of the most haunted places in Maryland.

The Antietam Battlefield is not just a historical site; it’s a place where the past seems to bleed into the present. Visitors can explore the battlefield through a self-driving tour that includes key locations like the Dunker Church, West Woods, and the Final Attack site.

The site is open 7 Days a Week from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m, and admission is $10 per person or $20 per vehicle.

10. Jonathan Hager House Museum, Hagerstown

Jonathan Hager House Museum

The Jonathan Hager House Museum, also known as “Hager’s Fancy,” is a historic landmark in Hagerstown, Maryland, with a history dating back to the mid-18th century.

The house was built by Jonathan Hager, the German immigrant who founded Hagerstown, and served as a residence, trading post, and frontier fort. Over the years, the house changed hands several times, eventually falling into disrepair before being restored and deeded to the city.

The house, which has been standing for nearly 300 years, is said to be home to at least 13 ghosts. Over the decades, curators and tour guides have reported a variety of paranormal experiences, including disembodied voices, objects moving on their own, and the sound of footsteps and heavy objects being dragged across the stone floor in the cellar.

The nursery is particularly active, with a rocking chair and cradle that move without any human intervention, and temperature fluctuations that have no apparent cause.

Visitors have reported seeing several apparitions, including a little girl who seems to be particularly drawn to women, a lady in green often seen looking out the window or as a flash of green in the hall, and a man in black who has been spotted both around the house and elsewhere in City Park.

The museum is open from April 7 – October on Fridays & Saturdays: 10AM – 4PM. Tours are on the hour, and no appointment necessary. Private tours are available if you call in advance.

1. Antietam Battlefield

  • Location: Sharpsburg, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The Antietam National Battlefield is part of the National Park Service and is open to the public year-round. You can take self-guided tours to learn more about its history and hauntings.

The Antietam Battlefield witnessed the brutal Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War in 1862. It was a battle that left behind more than 23,000 casualties and injuries. It is thought to be the bloodiest battle of the war. It’s no wonder that this historic site is believed to be haunted. Visitors have reported hearing phantom gunfire, seeing apparitions of Civil War soldiers in tattered uniforms, and even feeling sudden drops in temperature. The Dunker Church, a focal point of the battlefield, is a hotspot for paranormal activity, with tales of ghostly figures seen in and around the church.

2. Point Lookout Lighthouse

  • Location: Scotland, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The lighthouse is part of Point Lookout State Park and is accessible to the public during park hours.

Point Lookout Lighthouse, situated at the confluence of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay, has a history riddled with tragedy, making it a very likely place to encounter ghosts. It reportedly served as a POW camp, a lookout during the Revolutionary War, and a hospital during the Civil War. Legend has it that the spirit of a Confederate soldier, known as “The Keeper,” roams the lighthouse. Visitors have reported mysterious footsteps echoing through empty corridors, unexplained noises that send chills down your spine, and even sightings of the ghostly keeper himself. People say he smells of mildew and gunpowder and is quite mangled from a battle injury. Aside from the Confederate soldier, other visitors have reported an elderly woman searching for her grave and a singing lighthouse keeper.

3. Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House

  • Location: Waldorf, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: Also known as St. Catharine’s, this haunted house offers guided tours, but they aren’t technically ghost tours. They generally focus on the history of Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth, but docents are willing to answer any questions on the paranormal aspects of the home, as well.

Dr. Samuel Mudd is infamous for his involvement in treating John Wilkes Booth’s broken leg after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The Mudd House , with its connection to this dark chapter of American history, is said to be haunted by the ghost of Booth himself, who reportedly appears in various forms, including coming back to sleep on the bed where he once convalesced. Visitors have heard whispers in empty rooms, seen apparitions lurking in the shadows, and even experienced objects moving, seemingly on their own.

4. Maryland State House

  • Location: Annapolis, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The Maryland State House is open to the public and offers guided tours.

The Maryland State House, the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use, holds a rich history within its walls. Urban legend states that it’s home to the spirit of Thomas Dence, a plaster worker who tragically fell to his death during the construction of the dome in the 18th century. Witnesses have reported hearing unexplained footsteps echoing in the empty chambers and hallways, and some have claimed to see shadowy figures moving through the historic halls. It’s as if Dence’s spirit still lingers, overseeing the state’s affairs from beyond the grave. Aside from Dence, an unknown spirit haunts the Senate chamber where George Washington resigned his office of the presidency, and some visitors have reported seeing a Revolutionary Soldier in full attire on the grounds, as well.

5. Fletchertown Road

  • Location: Bowie, Maryland

This historic road has a reputation as a hotspot for paranormal activity, including one of Maryland’s favorite ghost stories—the legend of the goat man! This strange satyr-like creature reportedly escaped from the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. Some say he was a sort of mad scientist who performed experiments on himself, resulting in his half-beast transformation. In the 1950s and 1960s, several murders were pinned on the goat-man, who apparently chose an axe as his mode of destruction. It’s said that he viciously murdered travelers on the Fletchertown Road before devouring their corpses. Creepy urban legend or true story? Guess you’ll have to wander down Fletchertown Road for yourself to find out!

6. Jericho Covered Bridge

  • Location: Kingsville, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The bridge is accessible year-round and is a popular spot for photography and ghost enthusiasts.

The Jericho Covered Bridge, spanning over the Little Gunpowder Falls, is a picturesque wooden bridge that dates back to 1865. While on the National Register of Historic Places, it is also known for its eerie reputation. The ghost stories surrounding this bridge are varied and numerous! Some see a woman in 19th-century dress wandering the bridge. Others state that it’s guarded by a monkey-like creature or a red-eyed demon. Some say they see the bodies of enslaved people or soldiers hanging from the bridge’s rafters. Apparently, if you’re of the poltergeist variety, Jericho Bridge is the place to be!

7. St. Paul’s Cemetery

  • Location: Chestertown, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The cemetery is located outside of St. Paul’s Kent Church and is open to visitors.

St. Paul’s Cemetery is a well-kept graveyard dating back to the 1700s. It lies on the grounds of one of the oldest churches on the East Coast and is reportedly one of the most haunted cemeteries in North America. Visitors have reported encountering the apparition of a sorrowful woman in Victorian-era clothing, wandering through the old tombstones, seemingly in search of a lost loved one. Others have witnessed flickering lights, shadowy figures, and inexplicable cold spots. Most visitors report feeling as if someone was stalking them through the cemetery on their visit.

The most spine-chilling account involves a ghostly figure resembling a Civil War soldier, seen standing near the graves of other fallen soldiers, eternally guarding their resting place. Many of the fallen from the Battle of Caulk’s Field, during the War of 1812, are buried there, along with both Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers. Tench Tilghman, a Revolutionary War Officer, is said to patrol the cemetery by lantern light, and if you lie down on the grave of actress Tallulah Bankhead, you can reportedly hear her raspy voice calling out from beyond the grave. Creepy!

8. Hell House

  • Location: Patapsco Valley State Park
  • Visiting Information: The park is open for hiking, picnicking, and exploring.

Patapsco Valley State Park, with its beautiful landscapes and hiking trails, is also home to ghostly tales. The ruins of the old Ilchester Paper Mill and nearby structures have become hotspots for paranormal activity. Visitors have reported hearing disembodied voices, seeing shadowy figures, and feeling a sense of unease as they explore the abandoned buildings. The tragic history of the mill workers and accidents in the area have contributed to the park’s haunted reputation.

One of the most haunted locations in the park is lovingly referred to as Hell House. It was once St. Mary’s College, but the ruins have been taken over by graffiti artists and sinister spirits. Local legends claim that the remnants of the old altar are now used for evil rituals, such as animal sacrifice. A fire set by vandals resulted in the remaining structures being torn down a few years ago, so all that remains now is a haunted pile of rubble.

9. The Admiral Fell Inn

  • Location: Baltimore, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The Admiral Fell Inn operates as a hotel, offering guests a chance to stay in a haunted room.

The Admiral Fell Inn, located in the historic Fell’s Point neighborhood of Baltimore, has gained a reputation as one of Maryland’s most haunted hotels. In the late 1800s, the area was known for being a little rowdy, full of drunk sailors and lively brothels. The Port Mission was opened as a safe haven for fishermen and others seeking a safer night’s rest. It became popular and expanded over the years, taking over neighboring boarding houses. It’s still a popular hotel for the living, but some of the former guests never left.

Current guests claim to have seen floating soldiers in the hallways, a ghostly butler, and apparitions who knock on the doors before disappearing. One hotel manager even claimed she heard strange noises in the hotel, as if there was a massive party raging, but the hotel had been completely evacuated for days due to a hurricane.

10. Baltimore County Almshouse

  • Location: Cockeysville, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The museum is open to the public for visits.

The Baltimore County Almshouse , once a place of refuge for the poor and destitute in the 19th century, also held prisoners for a stint, which has given rise to some awful tales. The almshouse cared for neglected children, the mentally ill, and the elderly, but some of them never left. Ghostly reports from this site include disembodied voices, eerie apparitions, and unexplained footsteps.

A group of women are often heard talking on the third floor. The sound of children playing is often heard in the halls and on the grounds. Children’s faces are also seen in the upper-story windows. Some believe that the restless souls of those who suffered in the almshouse continue to linger, seeking acknowledgment for their pain. The historic place now serves as the home of the Historical Society of Baltimore County. They operate a small museum that displays the history of Baltimore County for all Marylanders to enjoy.

11. Fort McHenry

  • Visiting Information: Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is open to the public for tours.

Fort McHenry, famous for defending Baltimore Harbor from the British in the War of 1812 and inspiring the National Anthem, has plenty of spooky spots to allure ghost hunters. Visitors and park rangers have reported unusual occurrences, including spectral sightings of soldiers in period uniforms. The ghostly apparitions are believed to be the spirits of soldiers who bravely defended the fort. Perhaps these spirits still stand guard over this historic landmark, forever protecting it from unseen threats.

12. Jonathan Hager House

  • Location: Hagerstown, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The museum is typically open from April to October and offers guided tours on the hour.

The Jonathan Hager House Museum dates back to 1740 and was home to the founder of the towner. The Hagers hailed from Germany, and their home served as a frontier fort and trading post in the mid-18th century. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operates as a museum, but that doesn’t stop the poltergeists from hanging around.

The historic home is said to be haunted by two families: The Hammonds lived in the home in the 1840s, and so did the Downins, who resided there during the Civil War. The Downin children like to move a doll around the house. The cameras in the house never seem to work properly. Visitors often hear phantom footsteps, children playing upstairs, and heavy objects being moved about in the cellar. The nursery is a hot spot, and the rocking chair and cradle are often seen rocking on their own. The house may include as many as 13 specters, including a lady in green, a man in black, and a little girl who may be looking for her mom, as she is known to follow and tug at women who visit the museum.

13. Lord Baltimore Hotel

  • Visiting Information: The Lord Baltimore Hotel is a functioning hotel, and guests can stay in rooms with a haunted reputation.

The Lord Baltimore Hotel, an elegant and historic accommodation, is not only known for its luxurious ambiance but also for its ghostly residents. Guests staying in the hotel have reported strange occurrences, including flickering lights, unexplained noises, and encounters with a ghostly figure. The hotel elevator seems to have its own agenda. A young girl with a red ball often calls it to the 19th floor. Guests report a presence watching them as they sleep and even tugging at their bedsheets. Hotel staff report encountering the ghosts of a couple who committed suicide in the hotel in 1929 after the stock market crash. They are thought to be the parents of the crying girl with the red ball.

14. Clara Barton House

  • Location: Glen Echo, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The Clara Barton House is part of Glen Echo Park and can be visited during scheduled tours.

The Clara Barton National Historic Site, once the home of the renowned humanitarian and founder of the American Red Cross, has a storied past and is believed to be haunted by its former resident. Clara Barton’s dedication to helping others in times of crisis is well-documented. Perhaps she just couldn’t let go of her passion for the people of Earth. Visitors and staff at the house have reported hearing unexplained footsteps, the rustling of papers, and even the faint sound of a woman’s voice, continuing her work from beyond the grave. Clara spent the last 15 years of her life in the gigantic home, and she doesn’t appear to vacating any time soon!

Laurel Haunt @ Laurel, Maryland

Laurel’s House of Horror occupies the “Old Movie Theater” cinema complex, nestled in the back corner of Laurel Centre Mall. The historic theater was abandoned by its former occupants years ago. Having had their own paranormal experiences on the property, the owners first invited the Chesapeake Ghost Hunters to do an analysis of the property. During their investigation, they found that there are indeed signs of other-worldly activity at the location. Since then, many other ghost hunting groups have spent time investigating and observing. Recently, Charm City Paranormal has documented their own experiences and activity in the complex. This winter, M & M Paranormal will be conducting new investigations privately and with the public. BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Governor Wes Moore hosted members of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, Biden-Harris Administration's Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young, senior U.S. Department of Transportation officials, and executives from the Moore-Miller Administration to tour the Francis Scott Key Bridge recovery and salvage operations.

The tour allowed members of Congress to see the devastation firsthand and learn more from Unified Command about their progress.

“The collapse of the Key Bridge isn't just about Maryland – it's about our country, our people, and our economy. Everyone has a role in helping us fully reopen the Port of Baltimore and rebuild the bridge," said Gov. Moore. "Maryland is grateful for the partnership of leaders from both sides of the aisle and all levels of government, who have raised their hands to help us respond to a tragedy of national importance. We can – and we will – rebuild, together.”

  • Rep. David Trone (D-MD)
  • Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA)
  • Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC)
  • Rep. John H. Rutherford (R-FL)

“As appropriators and local community leaders, it is vital that we understand the magnitude of this situation and determine the best path forward. In the near term, we are focused on recovery efforts, rebuilding costs, and ensuring port operations are fully resumed," said the delegation of House Appropriations Committee members. "We continue to send our condolences to the families who’ve suffered immeasurable loss and are grateful to the first responders who quickly responded in the face of tragedy. We remain committed to navigating this situation together.”

Luke Combs, Lil Duval, Shrimp Fest and other fun things to do this weekend

haunted house maryland tours

About 90,000 or so folks in the Jacksonville area have at least part of their weekend planned out — they'll be at EverBank Stadium for one of Luke Combs' two concerts .

Tickets to the Friday and Saturday shows are still available, but it's OK if that's not your thing. There's also a massive shrimp festival, Jacksonville's own Lil Duval at the arena, a pair of Jacksonville Symphony shows and one of the few haunted houses you're liable to find anywhere in May.

Luke Combs concerts

Luke Combs was a rising star in country music, then he did a cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 song “Fast Car” and quickly became the rising star in country music. He’s doing two shows at the stadium with a different supporting cast each night (Cody Jinks, Charles Wesley Godwin, Hailey Whitters and the Wild Blue on Friday; Jordan Davis, Drew Parker and Colby Acuff on Saturday). Showtime is 5:45 p.m. each day. $59-$329. Info: everbankstadium.com

Halfway to Halloween

It seems like a long way to Halloween, but not for the folks at 13 th Floor, who have cooked up a weekend of off-season frights Friday and Saturday nights. They’ll also have axe throwing, escape games and zombie shooting to keep you busy. Tickets are $24.99-$79.99 and are sold on a timed basis. Info: 13thfloorjacksonville.com

Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival

You can use the full name if you want (eight flags have flown over Amelia Island in its long history) but just say “shrimp festival” and everyone will know what you’re talking about. There’s more to it than just shrimp — a pageant, a parade, a 5K run, a beard contest, an ice cream-eating competition, fireworks, a pirate invasion, a shrimp-fleet blessing and, of course, the Swingin’ Medallions. Admission is free. Festival hours are 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Info: shrimpfestival.com

May madness: Jazz Fest, Shrimp Fest, stadium concerts and other fun things to do in Jacksonville in May

Jacksonville Symphony

A pair of symphony performances this weekend have very little in common. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Greg Zelek fires up the giant Bryan Concert Organ for the final time this season, accompanied by string and wind players from the symphony ($27-$57). On Sunday, the symphony's inaugural Jazz Series wraps up with a performance by trumpeter Terence Blanchard with his band, the E-Collective, and the Turtle Island Quartet (6:30 p.m., $38-$57). Both shows are in the Jacoby Symphony Hall. Info: jaxsymphony.org

We Them Ones Comedy Tour

7 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. $69.50-$249.50.

Tickets aren’t cheap, but they might just be worth every penny for an evening of laughs with Mike Epps, Lil Duval, DeRay Davis, Chico Bean, Mojo Brookzz, Moneybag Mafia and DC Young Fly. Showtime is 7 p.m. Sunday at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. $69.50-$249.50. Info: jaxevents.com
