Best Overall

Kashwere travel blanket.

This blanket delivers the perfect combination of comfort, durability, and versatility.

The carrying bag is made of the same chenille fabric as the blanket, so it takes some effort to fit the blanket back inside the fuzzy bag.

If you’re a frequent traveler who values comfort, this travel blanket is worth every penny. We gave this Kashwere option a perfect score for being super cozy and comfortable, versatile, and durable. The blanket itself is made of a soft chenille yarn that feels like being wrapped in a cloud, providing a chef’s kiss balance between being warm but not heavy or too breezy. Size-wise, it might not be big enough to wrap you head to toe, but it covers all the important bits when you're sitting down — perfect for planes, cars, or just chilling at home. The fabric held up well after machine-washing and drying, and we thought the zipper on the carrying bag was sturdy. Bonus points: this blanket comes with its own carrying bag made of the same material, so you can double up the use for the packed blanket as a pillow, although it might not always be the easiest to tuck the blanket back inside the bag.

Best for Flights

Travelrest 4-in-1 travel blanket.

We love the wearability and portability of this Travelrest option.

We wish it came with a pillow, but it’s not a total dealbreaker.

This blanket feels just like that favorite throw blanket you'd fight your friends over at an Airbnb — soft, plush, and just right for keeping warm on chilly flights. Its standout feature is the poncho style with plenty of room in the sleeves, and it’s made from plush fleece that covered us from neck to ankles. Perfect for car rides, train trips, and flights, or even just lounging at home or at a sports event, this blanket was a breeze to unpack and repack thanks to its laptop case-like zip around and additional drawstring bag. When we rolled it and placed it inside, we were impressed that it packed down to the size of a water bottle. Snag this blanket if you're a busy traveler who hates lugging around bulky blankets!

Best for Camping

Yeti lowlands blanket.

From its waterproof material to its sturdy build, it doesn't get any more durable than this blanket.

This is way too large to use on a plane and is better suited for outdoor scenarios like camping trips, picnics, or beach outings.

First off, let's talk size: this blanket is massive, clocking in at about 6.5 by 4.5 feet and weighing nearly six pounds. While it might be a bit too big and heavy for squeezing onto your luggage for a plane trip, it's perfect for car rides or any outdoor adventure — especially camping. The blanket comes with its own carrying case, making it easy to throw with your other travel items.

One side of the blanket is soft to the touch, while the other is built for toughing it out on the ground. We love that it has a waterproof layer, making it so convenient against spills and soggy ground. We also noticed how durable it is, and we definitely think it will stand up well to pebbled surfaces while camping while still feeling soft and warm. While the price might seem steep at $200, it's worth the investment for its versatility and durability.

The Details: 78 x 55 inches | 5.8 pounds | 65 percent polyester/35 percent rayon (comfort side), 100 percent polyester (utility side)

Best Portable

Bluehills travel blanket pillow.

Priced at approximately $30, this is one of the best budget-friendly options on our list.

If you tend to run cold, this blanket might be too lightweight for you.

Why use a sad airline blanket when you can bring your own? While some of the other blankets on this list are too large to comfortably use on a plane, this one is the perfect portable size. We thought it was super soft and lightweight, but a tad thin — it’s ideal for keeping cozy on a plane or car ride, but maybe not quite warm enough for those who easily get chilly. We appreciated the stress-free packability when it’s time to deplane (no wrestling with a stubborn blanket here!). When you’re ready to pack it up, it folds neatly back into its plush carrying case, which doubles as a cozy pillow after you zip it up. It also features a luggage strap and a clip to attach it to a backpack that makes it convenient to carry.

Best Versatile

Away the travel blanket.

Featuring thermoregulating technology, this blanket keeps you comfy in any temperature while remaining lightweight.

Folding a blanket that's almost 6 by 4 feet into itself on a plane is not the easiest task, but once it's packed, it's super lightweight and compact.

Away’s The Travel Blanket is the Goldilocks of travel blankets on our list — it's never too hot, never too cold, and always just right. Made of lightweight nylon, we thought it was like snuggling up in a sleeping bag . It might not be the comfiest material out there, but its size (it stretches across three airplane seats!), breathability, and versatility for any occasion makes up for it. The blanket also has a foot pocket, but we noticed we couldn’t reach it comfortably without being overwhelmed by fabric while we tried it out on a plane because of how large the blanket is, so we think this blanket is better suited for car rides, Airbnb stays when you need extra blankets, or outdoor activities like picnics or camping trips.

The blanket features 37.5 thermoregulating technology to personalize climate control, and we did notice that we never felt chilly or overheated when using it. “If you get hot, 37.5 active particles help to cool you down. If you get cold, these same particles work to warm you up,” according to the product listing on the Away website . Plus, it has some pretty unique features like snaps to attach it to a travel pillow and a strap to hook onto a bag. We also love that the blanket folds into itself, so there isn’t an extra bag you have to carry around.

The Details: 69.5 x 44.5 inches | 1.05 pounds | 100 percent Cocona 37.5 Nylon

Best Cashmere Set

Naked cashmere 4-piece travel set.

Naked Cashmere

This travel set also comes with a pair of cashmere socks, a sleep mask, and a silk pillowcase.

It’s definitely a splurge as the priciest option on this list.

Look no further if you want to travel in style: this set is a luxury sleep kit in a pouch. It comes with cashmere socks and a silk sleep mask, and the silk pouch transforms into a pillowcase when the blanket's inside. Our T+L team member who tested this set was instantly sold when they slipped on the socks, wrapped up in the oversized blanket, and got comfy on a cross-country flight. They even continued to use it at their destination when they got chilly. This blanket feels like a dream — it’s so soft, it's like wrapping yourself in a designer sweater. Priced at $450, it is an investment, but we deem it worth the splurge (and it makes a luxurious gift for the traveler who has everything).

The Details: 82 x 50 inches | Cashmere

Most Durable

Eddie bauer packable synthetic throw.

Not only is this blanket highly packable and portable, but it also withstands all sorts of activities, from camping trips to sports events.

The color and style options are loud and bold.

What to Consider: The color and style options are loud and bold.

This travel blanket is the ultimate all-in-one travel companion. What sets this blanket apart is its perfect balance between puffiness and smoothness; it's soft to the touch, but when it's time to hit the road again, it rolls up effortlessly into its carry bag. It’s so lightweight that we forgot we were even carrying it! It is also clear that this blanket is built to last. Despite our rigorous testing, it stood up to everyday use — including cat claws, car rides, and wash cycles — while staying soft and cozy. It's the perfect blend of lightweight portability and maximum warmth, making it a top choice for travelers.

PAVILIA Travel Blanket and Pillow

With its velvety feel, portability, and budget-friendly price tag, this is a solid choice for anyone looking for bang for their buck.

This travel blanket lacks certain premium features compared to others on the market.

This travel blanket is wallet-friendly without compromising on comfort. Made from microfleece polyester, it's soft, lightweight, and velvety, perfect for covering up whether you're sitting or laying down. Its compact size makes it easy to wear on a train or a plane when you don’t want to encroach on the person sitting next to you, but it’s still large enough to cover you and keep you warm. To pack it up, simply fold it a couple of times, zip it into its carrying pouch, and voila — you've got yourself a pillow. Plus, the pouch has a strap for easy carrying, which you can buckle onto a backpack strap or luggage handle. While it might not be the fanciest blanket out there, it holds up well in the wash and should last a few years. And at its price, it's a steal for the comfort and convenience it offers.

The Details: 60 x 43 inches | Microfleece

Best Puffer

L.l.bean puffer blanket.

This do-it-all camp blanket is perfect for sitting around the fire, sleepovers, movie night, picnics, and more.

The available patterns might not fit everyone’s taste.

Wrapping yourself in this blanket is like snuggling up with a puffer coat: slick and water-resistant but still comfy to the touch. Despite being lightweight, we found that this option kept us nice and toasty without making us feel overheated. Its flexibility made it easy to fold down this blanket into its travel bag, compact enough to match the size of a 40-ounce water bottle. It also features elastic bands on each corner to turn this blanket into a makeshift cape or coat. We love that this blanket is tougher than it looks, holding up all our testing with no signs of wear and tear.

White+Warren Cashmere Travel Wrap

White+Warren

Suitable for either a flight or a fancy dinner, we love how practical, chic, and versatile this wrap is for several occasions.

Its material is cashmere, so you have to dry clean it.

This White + Warren wrap may just be our new favorite go-to accessory for chilly airplanes. What sets it apart is its versatility, doubling as a cozy blanket for travel or a shawl that you can wear over your shoulders. It's well over five feet in length and though it's not the widest when compared to more traditional blankets, it’s wider than a standard scarf so you can wear it draped over your body or lap to keep warm in transit. The wrap's premium cashmere material adds to its luxe appeal, and that means you can even wear it out to dinner while looking stylish — and you can’t do that with a regular airplane blanket. Bonus points for making it out of a 14-hour travel day packed into a personal item without any wrinkles!

The Details: 81 x 36 inches | Cashmere

Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket

This massive blanket offers ample warmth and coverage, and there’s a huge selection of color options.

It’s not the easiest to stuff back into its carrying case, and it’s too large to use on a plane.

We found your next camping companion with the Rumpl The Original Puff. The generous size of this blanket provides lots of cozy comfort whether you’re covering yourself to sleep or laying or sitting on top of it. With 30 color options to choose from, this travel blanket is great for anyone looking for an airy, breathable, and versatile blanket for outdoor use. The included stuff sack adds convenience, though packing it back up requires some effort akin to rolling and tucking a sleeping bag or camping air mattress back into its case. At $125, it's a worthwhile investment for warm camping trips or outdoor activities but may not be practical for frequent air travel due to its large size.

The Details: 75 x 52 inches | 2.1 pounds | Recycled polyester

Best Insulated

The north face wawona blanket.

The North Face

This lightweight blanket delivers on warmth and packability.

We found that this blanket is not the most cozy option.

We recommend this water-resistant North Face blanket specifically for outdoor activities and events, making it ideal for travelers seeking a lightweight, packable option that will keep you warm without taking up much space in your bag. The blanket features recycled synthetic insulation that provides warmth but lacks the soft feel of fleece or yarn. Packing and unpacking the blanket were straightforward, and though it took us a little bit of effort to fold the blanket neatly back into the attached carrying bag, once you get it back inside, the bag helps compress the blanket to a compact size that you can stow away in a backpack. The blanket showed no signs of wear or tear after multiple uses and washes, but we do think it has the potential to get snagged or tear if faced with anything sharp.

The Details: 72 x 55.9 inches | 1.5 pounds | Recycled polyester

Unhide Lil' Marsh Traveler

It feels expensive for how comfortable and soft it is but is super affordable.

It only comes in a few neutral shades of beige, and it does not include any straps or carrying cases.

Cuddly, comfortable, convenient, and cozy — and those are only the adjectives beginning with “C” when describing this blanket. Despite its ability to roll up small, the Unhide Lil’ Marsh Traveler proved to be a large blanket, providing ample coverage with plenty of extra room while sitting or lying down. This would make a great option for a plane or car ride for how thin and soft it is without any excessive bulk to bog you down or get in your neighbor’s way. We found that this blanket maintained its softness and durability throughout testing, remaining in pristine condition even after frequent use and washes. It can also easily fit into a tote bag or carry-on due to its thin material, making it easy to travel with when you have limited space but want something soft and snuggly to cover yourself with.

Other Travel Blankets We Liked

Four additional travel blankets we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list due to minor issues but still had notable features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Forestfish Fleece Throw Blanket : Priced at under $20, this blanket offers a good value for those seeking a smaller, lightweight travel blanket, especially suitable for shorter road trips. While it was adequate for drives, it may not offer enough insulation for plane or train rides with less temperature control.

Therm-a-rest Honcho Poncho Wearable Hoodie Blanket : This blanket maintains warmth without overheating, making it suitable for various outdoor activities. While its wearability adds convenience, it does not offer much coverage in poncho mode.

Sagefinds Soft Travel Blanket with Bag : Although deceivingly thin, this option offers a step up from airline blankets, providing warmth and breathability without being overly luxurious. It's deemed best for budget-conscious travelers seeking portability.

Eversnug Travel Blanket and Pillow : We like the versatility of being able to use this item as both a blanket and a pillow. However, it’s not the best choice for taller people because it’s on the smaller size.

Our T+L team tested 19 travel blankets in everyday travel scenarios to assess comfort, ease of use, durability, and value. We followed a comprehensive examination to evaluate each option, including overall construction, fabric choice, design features, warmth, and packability. We used the blankets in a variety of practical scenarios including traveling by plane, train, and car; during outdoor events; and even while lounging at home to determine comfort, functionality, versatility, and durability.

We took notes on how heavy or lightweight the blankets felt, how warm or breathable they were, how large or compact they were, how easy it was to pack or fold them, and any unique features they had to make them more portable or comfortable. For the blankets that were machine-washable, we washed them at least once during the initial testing period to see how they held up and if the materials changed at all.

Our long-term plan includes testing for an additional six months to monitor each blanket’s performance and durability in different travel scenarios. As we continue to test the blankets in various real-world settings, we will continue to take notes on portability, practicality, and any wear and tear, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each travel blankets’ reliability. We will update these results if our findings should change.

Tips for Buying Travel Blankets

Think of your intended use.

When buying a travel blanket, consider your intended use carefully. If you're primarily using it for flights, prioritize coziness and a compact size — you won’t want something too large or too bulky that will take up too much space in your personal item or spill into the neighboring seat. Look for blankets made from soft materials that provide warmth without being too heavy to carry. Opt for lightweight options that can easily fit into your bag and keep you comfortable during long flights.

On the other hand, if you're planning to use the blanket for camping or outdoor activities, prioritize warmth and durability. Consider blankets that are larger, thicker, and possibly waterproof (or at least water-resistant) to withstand various weather conditions. Look for materials like fleece or wool that provide insulation and keep you warm even in chilly outdoor settings.

Additionally, pay attention to the dimensions of the blanket. Some blankets are designed for one person, while others are larger and suitable for two. Choose the size that best fits your needs, whether you prefer individual coverage or sharing with a travel companion.

Keep portability in mind

When you're on the hunt for a travel blanket, don't forget about portability. Look out for ones that come with a handy carrying case, especially those with luggage sleeves or clips that you can easily attach to your backpack or suitcase. Having a dedicated carrying case helps keep the blanket compact and protected when not in use, preventing it from taking up too much space in your luggage or personal bag. Some blankets can even double as pillows when you fold them up into their cases. Additionally, it helps to not carry one more additional item (look ma, no hands!) and makes it effortless to bring along during travel.

Look at special features

Traveling is hard enough, so when shopping for a travel blanket, consider special features that enhance functionality and comfort. Look for blankets with built-in footrest pockets, which provide extra warmth and coziness during long journeys. Zippered compartments are handy for storing small items like headphones or travel documents, keeping them within easy reach.

You can also opt for blankets that can fold into a pillow, offering versatility and saving space in your luggage. Waterproof blankets are ideal for outdoor adventures, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable in unpredictable weather conditions. Thermoregulating blankets help maintain a comfortable temperature, keeping you warm without overheating. Blankets with sleeves and hoods allow you to wear them like a garment, providing maximum coverage and warmth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ultimately, the size of your optimal travel blanket depends on your personal preferences, intended use, and travel requirements. Determine if you'll be using the blanket alone or sharing it with a travel companion. Look for a blanket that provides adequate coverage for your body lengthwise and widthwise, and think about whether you’ll be using the blanket draped over your lap or shoulders on an airplane or to snuggle your entire body under while sleeping in a tent. Check the dimensions to ensure it will fully cover you while sitting or lying down, especially if you're tall or prefer extra room.

It’s also best to consider how you'll be using the blanket. If it's primarily for air travel, a smaller size that fits comfortably in your carry-on bag may be ideal. For camping or outdoor activities, a larger size for added warmth and comfort may be more suitable.

Packing a travel blanket is relatively simple and depends on its design and size. If the blanket comes with a carrying case or pouch, fold or roll it neatly and tuck it into the case. Some blankets are designed to fold into themselves, transforming into a compact pillow or storage bag, making them easy to pack. If there's no specific carrying case, fold the blanket into a manageable size and place it in your luggage or travel bag like you would do for a sweatshirt or pair of pants. Consider using compression packing cubes or vacuum-sealed bags to further reduce bulk and save space if it’s a bulkier blanket.

Washing a travel blanket typically depends on the material and care instructions provided by the manufacturer. In general, most travel blankets made of synthetic materials like polyester or fleece are machine-washable in cold water on a gentle cycle. After washing, air drying is usually recommended to maintain the integrity of the fabric and prevent shrinking or damage from high heat. There are also some cashmere blankets on this list that are dry-clean only. Be sure to check the care label on the blanket for specific instructions and any additional precautions.

Your post-workout recovery toolkit may already include a sturdy foam roller and an ice pack—but what about a heated blanket? Research shows that heat (like the warmth from an electric blanket) can help improve your blood circulation, speeding up your recovery after a tough workout . For busy people or anyone living in a small space, a soft, cozy blanket that doubles as a smart way to rest up is a serious win-win.

The best heated blankets are comfortable, safe to use, and easy to care for. To find the top options, we first consulted fitness and medical professionals for advice on which key features to look for. Then, we tested 27 expert-approved heated blankets from top, trusted brands. Eight of our favorites received high scores for quality, feel, effectiveness, heat, durability, ease of use, and overall value. A certified physical therapist from our Review Board also reviewed this article for accuracy and how to use a heated blanket safely.

Are Heated Blankets Safe to Use?

Electric blankets emit extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs). Most people are exposed to ELF-EMFs daily through common objects like electrical wiring, electric shavers, and hair dryers. Studies have found a link between exposure to high levels of EMF and childhood leukemia, but this exposure typically comes from residential power lines (not heated blankets). Generally, ELF-EMF levels are so low at home that they are not a cause for concern.

Avoid using a heated blanket if you have neuropathy from diabetes or other nerve or circulatory conditions, says board-certified physical therapist Lindy Royer, PT, NCPT. You should not use a heated blanket over an acute injury that's swollen (like a sprained knee or ankle), adds physical therapist Kathleen Gassner, DPT. People who are pregnant should stick to low or medium settings to avoid overheating. When shopping, make sure to purchase your electric blanket brand-new (not second-hand) from a reputable brand. Also, check for an ETL Listed Mark or a UL Certification Mark —these signal that your blanket has been certified safe by a nationally recognized third-party testing agency.

Huddled up at a track meet? Eddie Bauer’s Heated Throw Blanket goes where you go, with a convenient battery-powered design . Built for the outdoors, this reversible blanket is made from water-resistant nylon on one side and weather-treated fleece on the other. We also love that the kangaroo pocket where the battery lives doubles as a hand warmer in cooler temperatures.

During testing, we loved that this blanket warms up quickly and lasts up to six hours , depending on which setting you’re using. The battery is easy to charge using the included adapter and even has a USB port for juicing up your phone in a pinch. And with a three-year warranty , you can rest easy.

  • After we tossed this blanket in the washing machine, we were disappointed to find that the controller didn’t work as well. We recommend spot-cleaning only to get the most out of your purchase.

“I love that it’s weather-resistant—everyone should have one.” —Polly Rodberg, Verywell Fit product tester

Sizes: 89 x 89 inches | Material: Polyester | Heat Settings: 8 | Power Source: 17-foot cord | Machine-Washable: Yes | Our Overall Rating: 4.2/5

Best for pairs, especially if someone’s always hot and someone’s always cold.

Never fight over the thermostat again with Shavel Home Products’ Micro Flannel Heated Blanket . When we tested the queen size, we found that it distributed heat evenly and had an intuitive controller , with up and down arrow buttons that control the temperature and a handy timer.

Made from velvety micro flannel and trimmed with a satin border , this thick quilt comes in a wide range of colors and sizes for different beds and couches. We especially like that if one person forgets to turn their side off, the blanket will automatically shut off after 10 hours. Well-constructed, ETL-tested , and covered by a five-year warranty , this blanket is also safe to use and easy to care for .

  • The wires are more noticeable in this blanket than in others we tested.

“Pro tip: Turn it on at a low temperature while you get ready for bed. That way, when you get into bed, you won't be sliding into cold sheets. I did this several times and it felt so cozy and luxurious!” —Brandi Fuller, Verywell Fit product tester

Best With Foot Pocket

Degrees of comfort micro-plush heated blanket.

Budget-friendly

Long power and controller cords

Shuts off after two hours

Cord connection is bulky and difficult to release

Sizes: 50 x 62 inches or 60 x 70 inches | Material: Polyester | Heat Settings: 3 | Power Source: 6-foot cord | Machine-Washable: Yes | Our Overall Rating: 4.4/5

Best for keeping your feet warm after walking or running in cold weather .

We didn’t know we needed a heated blanket with a foot pocket until we tried some—and Degrees of Comfort’s Micro-Plush Heated Blanket quickly became our favorite. In testing this oversized, UL-certified throw, we found it warmed quickly to 82.9 degrees F on the highest setting. Plus, its lightweight fabric hides the wires inside well and feels soft to the touch.

Once we kicked up our cold, tired feet, we appreciated how quickly we could get comfortable with this blanket’s long power and controller cords . The straightforward, ergonomic remote is easy to use and can be removed when it’s time to toss the blanket in the washing machine. We also love that it’s budget-friendly , costing seven times less than some of our other top picks. After using this blanket for two months, we (and our cats) are still happily reaching for it on chilly nights.

  • Most heated blankets on our list automatically shut off after six to 10 hours of use. But this one shuts off after two hours, which we found to be a little inconvenient.
  • During testing, we noticed it was difficult to release the heating element plug from the blanket. However, this does ensure a secure, safe connection.

“This heated blanket is incredible for its generous size, genius foot pocket, and heating abilities. My cat loved this blanket too, even when it was off—this is the only blanket she's ever snuggled up under.” —Amina Abdelrahman, Verywell Fit product tester

Heated Blankets We Also Tested

Through our rigorous testing process, we’ve tried dozens of heated blankets—but they can’t all make our list of favorites. While these blankets impressed us in some ways, they ultimately missed the mark:

  • Made from soft fleece and shearling, Woolrich’s Linden Mink to Berber Electric Blanket feels cozy to curl up under. But it’s on the smaller side, and the blanket’s edges don’t heat up. It also only warms up by 9 degrees—compared to around 15 degrees for some of our favorite blankets.
  • Pure Enrichment’s WeightedWarmth Blanket heats up nicely, and it’s weighted (unlike many of our top picks). But the fleece matted quickly after we spot-treated a stain. We also found that the controls were tricky to use.
  • Silky soft and budget-friendly, Comfort Classics’ Arielle Heated Metallic Print Throw heats up evenly. However, the fabric feels thin and the edges had some loose threads. Plus, we wish it was easier to spot-clean.

After testing 27 heated blankets, Shavel Home Products’ Micro Flannel Heated Blanket is our clear winner for its long-lasting heat and impressive memory function. We continue to test all of these heated blankets at home, and we’ll update our recommendations if we notice anything new that we haven’t already mentioned here.

What to Look for When Shopping for Heated Blankets

  • Heat Settings: Heated blankets may have anywhere from three to 20 different heat settings. The more, the better, according to Royer—she says variety creates a more comfortable experience. If you’re planning on sharing the blanket with others, consider a larger option with multiple heating zones, like Shavel Home Products’ Micro Flannel Heated Blanket . This can minimize disagreements and promote a restful night’s sleep for all, says Emeka Aludogbu, DC, CCN, CSCS, a chiropractic and sports medicine doctor.
  • Materials: Physical therapist Lalitha McSorley, BS, MS, PT, recommends looking for heated blankets made from polyester because they’re soft, durable, easy to wash, and fire-resistant. Microfiber is another great option that feels even cozier, rarely pills, and can also go in the washing machine, she adds.
  • Size: Heated blanket sizes start at throws (perfect for lounging on a chair or sofa) and go all the way up to California king (ideal for sharing with significant others and pets). Deciding where you’ll be using your blanket and how many others you’ll be sharing it with can help you choose the right size.
  • Features: Every blanket on our list has at least one remote control that adjusts its heat settings and an automatic shut-off safety function. Some have an LED screen that’s easy to read in the dark or a programmable timer. When it comes to design, you may want to look for pockets to stash cold feet, smartphones, or remotes.
  • Safety: “All new electric blankets are required to have safety features, like a rheostat control. A rheostat control is used to control the amount of current flowing in a circuit. Drastic changes in current are what usually causes fire and burns,” McSorley says. To ensure your heated blanket is safe to use, Royer and board-certified family medicine physician Laura Purdy, MD, MBA, agree that it should be purchased new—never second-hand. Also, check that it has an up-to-date warranty and a third-party certification.
  • Third-Party Certifications: According to Royer, Purdy, and McSorley, it’s important to buy a heated blanket that is certified safe by a nationally recognized testing agency. Check for an ETL Listed Mark or a UL Certification Mark. These symbols are a signal that the heated blanket you’re purchasing is safe to use.
  • Care and Maintenance: Look for a heated blanket that can be washed regularly, and always launder it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Most blankets on our list are machine-washable—but if your coffee or tea takes a tumble, you should use a damp cloth and some dish soap to spot-clean it.

How We Selected and Tested the Heated Blankets

To find the best heated blankets, we’ve tested 11 expert-recommended options from top brands. During testing, we evaluate each product based on the following key criteria:

  • Quality: When we first unbox each blanket, we consider how it looks and feels. Are there crooked seams and loose threads? Can we see or feel the cords inside, or are they well-hidden? We also check to see if the blanket has an ETL Listed Mark or a UL Certification Mark.
  • Feel: As we test the blanket, we assess how it feels. Is it soft and smooth to the touch, or is the material thin and scratchy? If the blanket has two different sides, are they both pleasant to use? Is it still soft at the end of the testing period, after multiple washes and spot-cleaning sessions?
  • Effectiveness: To earn a perfect score in this category, a blanket has to heat up quickly and evenly. If the blanket has any additional features, we also test those and note how well they work.
  • Heat: The best heated blankets have lots of heat settings that all work correctly. Some are automatic, while others require the user to control the heat level. If a blanket has multiple heating zones or other features, we make sure to test those, too. Do all heat settings match the manufacturer’s claims and specifications?
  • Durability: As we use the blankets, we note how easy they are to clean. After weeks of regular use, does the blanket still look and feel brand new? Do the controls still work?
  • Ease of Use: We make sure each heated blanket has settings and controls that are easy to use. Is the display easy to read? Can we work the remote without consulting the blanket’s instruction manual? Do we find ourselves continually reaching for it, or is there something that keeps the blanket from becoming a regular part of our routines?
  • Overall Value: To accurately rate each heated blanket’s value, we don’t look at its price until the end of each testing period, after we’ve evaluated it in every other category. How much would we pay for the blanket, based on its performance? Heated blankets with a high value score are often worth less than what we’d consider paying for them.

We consulted experts at every stage while researching and reporting this story. Some, like Royer, helped us determine how to use heated blankets safely. Others provided guidance on how using a heated blanket can improve your daily routine. We choose products independently, but input from experts helps us tailor our selections.

Best Heated Blankets of 2024

Whether you’re in search of a therapeutic heat source to treat an aching back or just looking for a cozy way to curl up with a good book, the heated blankets on our list are sure to keep you toasty warm all winter long.

Like heating pads, electric blankets have small heating components running through the material of the blanket, and many require an electrical outlet. Occasionally, you may find one that uses a rechargeable battery, which makes it perfect for chilly nights by a campfire or outside watching a sporting event.

According to pain specialist Dr. Rohan Jotwani, heated blankets are a “relatively recent” means of therapeutic pain management, and are successful because heat can improve blood circulation to alleviate some pain including lower back and muscle pain. With a wide array of sizes, colors, materials, and heating levels, there is sure to be a heated blanket that fits your decor and your temperature needs.

Ten heat settings, a programmable timer, and 10-hour safety shut-off

Dual controllers in queen and king sizes so each person can program their own ideal temperature

Machine washable

Five-year warranty

Stains can be hard to remove

On the pricier side

The seven-layer Shavel Modern electric blanket is made of micro flannel, a down-alternative fill, electrical cloth, and soft sherpa – all of which are sure to keep you cozy all night long.

The Modern electric blanket has 10 secure heat settings and temperature options ranging from 77 to 114 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s good for sleeping in a cooler room, as it heats up quickly to your desired temperature, but even at its top setting doesn’t get too hot, so you’ll be comfortably warm but not clammy or overheated. Dr. Matthew Ebben, a psychologist specializing in sleep medicine, says “temperature is really important when it comes to sleep,” and that “sleeping in a slightly cooler bedroom generally promotes sleep.”

There are two controllers in the queen and king sizes, perfect for couples, as each person can choose their own ideal temperature, with the added bonus that the blanket will remember favorite settings. Safety features include a 10-hour automatic shut-off feature. With four sizes and 12 colors and designs to choose from, this heated blanket is sure to add a pop of color and warmth to any room.

Six-hour shut-off safety feature

Lacks more advanced controls

The CureCure Electric Blanket is made of soft flannel, cotton wool, and sherpa with four heating settings between 95 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit for less than $40. Not only is the CureCure budget-friendly, but it is carefully designed with safety features including an automatic shut off (6 hours for the throw and 10 hours for the larger models) and overheating protection, so you can curl up, warm up, and not worry if you fall asleep with your blanket still on.

Though the CureCure electric blanket is on the smaller side – with just three sizes in throw, twin, and full dimensions – it evenly distributes lasting heat, with soft sherpa and flannel sides that successfully mask the wires, and a thinner weight ideal for anyone who wants to stay warm but avoid the bulk of a heavy blanket. The controller, while simpler and lacking some of the more advanced options of other heated blankets on our list, is intuitive and easy to use, something anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist Dr. Rohan Jotwani, M.D., M.B.A. recommends in particular for older individuals.

The 50-inch-by-40-inch size is large enough for camping or watching outdoor sports, while also small enough to be manageable on the go. The kangaroo pouch for the controller doubles as a hand warmer, ideal for outdoor spectating in colder weather. It is worth noting that while the Eddie Bauer heated blanket claims to be washer and dryer safe, it might be best to spot clean it as some users noticed the blanket was less functional after machine washing, with the power switch becoming harder to use.

With 10 heating levels to choose from and two temperature-adjustable zones, the Westinghouse electric blanket allows you and your partner to try out multiple temperatures and individually select the temperature that feels best for your body. Medical King Heated Blanket  »

Medical King Heated Blanket

Large, backlit setting display

User-friendly, easy-to-read controls

Quick to heat up with 10 settings and a 4-hour auto shut-off feature

Heat distribution can be a bit uneven

Wires may be noticeable

The Medical King Heated Blanket chases away the chill with a quick heat-up time and a dual-sided fluffy sherpa and soft flannel design that is thick enough to keep you cozy but not stuffy. Dr. Rohan Jotwani recommends older individuals choose heated blankets that are easy to use and have a range of options. The Medical King heated blanket fits both of those descriptions, as its controller comes with a light-up screen that makes it easy to change the temperature and heating time even when it’s dark in the room.

Noted for being user-friendly, the Medical King heated blanket is also machine washable, so clean-up is easy and convenient, and the non-adjustable four-hour auto shut-off feature offers excellent peace of mind. While the wires in the blanket can be noticeable, they don’t impede the soft, light feel of the blanket. It is worth noting that some may find the heat distribution of the Medical King blanket a bit uneven.

The Bottom Line

In researching the best heated blankets, we found that the two key features to look for are safety and setting variability. Safety certifications like ETL or UL certification ensure that your blanket has been tested for harmful substances. Automatic shut-off and timer features are important for fire safety. Multiple heat settings allow you to test out options until you find the temperature that works best for you, which is especially important for older individuals and those looking for pain relief, according to anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist Dr. Rohan Jotwani.

Things To Consider When Buying Heated Blankets

Safety Features: Safety comes first when shopping for your heated blanket. You’ll want to be sure to check the safety features included, such as timers and auto shut-offs Other safety features to look for are overheat protection as well as ETL or UL certification for low electromagnetic field emissions (EMF). Without having these safety features in place, the blanket may become a fire hazard over time.

Materials: The material of your heated blanket is important so you can ensure you stay comfortable and cozy. Heated blankets are usually made of polyester microfiber, fleece, sherpa, or flannel, and can be wonderfully plushy and soft. Some other common materials include acrylic, which tends not to be as comfortable, and cotton, which is more flammable. You will also want to consider what you’re going to use your blanket for. If you’re planning to cuddle under a heated blanket on a camping trip, you might want to consider a blanket with fabric that can stand up to the elements, like the Eddie Bauer portable heated blanket, which has a durable, water-resistant nylon side to protect it, as well as a plush polyester side for comfort.

Size and Dimensions: The size you want for your heated blanket depends on what you plan to use it for and where you’ll be putting it. Heated blankets come in a wide array of sizes including throw, twin, full, queen, and king, and most of the blankets on our list come in multiple sizes. If you’re looking to curl up under a heated blanket to read on the couch or wear it as a heated shawl, you likely want a throw-size blanket, which typically is around 50 by 60 inches.

Cleaning and Maintenance: Keeping your electric blanket clean is important, so you should always check your blanket if it’s been in storage to make sure it does not appear to be damaged, and follow the cleaning and maintenance care listed by the manufacturer. All the blankets on our list are machine washable, and some even dryer-safe. For machine-washable electric blankets, you want to keep an eye on your washing and drying cycles so you can limit the amount it is exposed to heat and water. You’ll want to use a mild detergent and keep your washing machine water temperature to a cool or warm water temperature and a shortened, gentle cycle. Depending on the instructions with your blanket, you might be able to partially dry it in a clothes dryer on a low heat setting, but even if it is dryer safe you will want to finish drying it by air-drying.

How We Chose the Best Heated Blankets

To compile this list of best heated blankets, our U.S. News 360 Reviews editors and contributors consulted several experts including a pain specialist and a psychologist specializing in sleep medicine. The takeaway? Prioritize blankets that are easy to use, have safety precautions, and offer a range of options, so you can find the setting that works best for you. Using careful, comprehensive research, we then narrowed down our options, taking into account factors like comfort, customizability, cost, materials, temperature control options, ease of cleaning, portability, durability, and safety features. Ultimately we found that you don’t have to sacrifice plushy comfort to find a safe, affordable heated blanket that will keep you cozy all night long.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

At U.S. News 360 Reviews, our editors and contributors have years of combined experience testing, researching, and reviewing products. To ensure we understood the relationship between pain, heat, and sleep, we interviewed top experts including Dr. Rohan Jotwani, M.D., M.B.A., an anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, Och Spine at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and Dr. Matthew Ebben, Ph.D., a psychologist specializing in sleep medicine at New York-Presbyterian and Associate Director of the Weill Cornell Center for Sleep Medicine. Sheli Paige Frank , the author of this piece, is a scripted TV writer, researcher, and New York Times-published journalist who has written multiple articles for U.S. News and World Report about sleep and pain-related products. A homebody who suffers from intermittent pain due to an autoimmune disease, Sheli knows the importance of balancing comfort, temperature, and safety in heated products – and finding that perfect cozy blanket to curl up under while you read!

The heated blanket size you need depends on how you will be using it. Heated blankets come in a wide variety of sizes including throw, twin, full, queen, and king. If you’re planning on using it on a bed, choose a blanket that matches the size of your bed, for example, a queen-size blanket for a queen-size bed. If you plan to use your heated blanket while curled up on the couch reading or watching TV or wearing it as a shawl, we recommend using a throw-size blanket, which usually has dimensions around 50 by 60 inches.

If your heated blanket does not have a timer and an automatic safety shut-off after a certain number of hours, it is not safe to use while sleeping, and you should instead turn it off before you fall asleep. While timers and safety shut-offs can improve safety, our experts do not recommend sleeping with a heated blanket, as according to sleep medicine expert Dr. Matthew Ebben, sleeping with a heated blanket can cause “increased fragmentation of sleep” which isn’t good for your sleep quality.

Yes, heated blankets can help alleviate muscle pain. According to pain medicine specialist Dr. Rohan Jotwani, “Heat is a well-known therapy to manage pain.” Heat like that from heated blankets helps relieve pain by improving blood flow to areas of the body, which can help with multiple types of pain, including muscle pain and lower back pain. Dr. Jotwani recommends combining heat with other therapies like exercise, physical therapy, massage, mindfulness, acupuncture, injections, and electrical stimulation for holistic pain relief.

When fully unfolded, you can slip this blanket over your head and wear it like a poncho. Made of plush polyester fabric, the Travelrest blanket weighs just 20 ounces and is machine-washable for long-term use. Reviewers love it too, one Amazon customer saying “Love the fact you can put it over your head so it stays on your body—I play a lot of games so a blanket that keeps me wrapped up while doing this is ideal. Very soft. My husband is impressed that it can double up as a cushion as well as he suffers with a bad back!”

How to choose the best travel blankets

line break

While you're shopping for your own travel blanket, there are some key details you should consider before purchasing. Here are some helpful things to be mindful of, according to textile experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute :

✔️ Material: If you're looking for an affordable, lightweight, and warm travel blanket, textile analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute suggest trying fleece or a synthetic microfiber made of polyester. They also share that nylon fabrics are lightweight, durable and smooth, which usually makes them ideal for camping, hiking, or other outdoor adventures, that natural fibers like cotton and linen aren't typically quite as warm but breathe well, and that merino fibers, while sometimes pricey, are quite warm and soft.

✔️ Size: For travel blankets in particular, it’s important to keep size dimensions in mind. You want to be sure to pick something that’s large enough to keep both your hands and toes warm but will also pack down small enough for your carry-on if you’re flying. Many of our picks offer plenty of coverage as well as packable into either a smaller pouch or convertible into a pillow.

✔️ Features: Many of our picks for travel blankets are designed with extra features. Some offer a case or pouch to keep your blanket compact, while others offer an attached loop, designed to be helpful for toting the blanket when you’re on the go. Some blankets offer wearability features, like a hole or snaps at the neck that allow you to use the blanket hands-free. Last, some blankets feature added pockets to provide extra space for your smaller belongings that are easily lost in the cracks of your car or plane seat.

Rich Gray

Updated January 2022

If you spend time in your car in the winter, you know that road trips and long commutes can be chilly, drafty affairs, even with the heat cranked. A heated travel blanket can help alleviate some of the colder aspects of winter driving, and it does so at a fraction of the cost of heated seats. Heated travel blankets are also a great way to let passengers choose their own comfort level. They’re a lifesaver if you find yourself stranded on a remote winter road waiting for help to arrive.

Before you choose the right one for you, consider factors such as construction materials and how these blankets are powered, in addition to features such as timers, temperature controls, and safety elements like auto shut-off.

heat travel blanket

Key considerations

Construction material.

Fleece is the standard construction material for heated travel blankets, although the type of fleece can vary considerably. Thick polar fleece and water-resistant polyester fleece are the two common types of fleece used, and both offer soft and comfortable surfaces that can help to keep you warm even when the blanket is not plugged in.

Whatever type of fleece you settle on, the material — and the electronic elements inside it — should be rugged enough to hold up to constant road travel.

Power source

Since they are designed largely for automotive travel, heated travel blankets are almost universally powered via a cord that plugs into your car or truck’s 12V (or cigarette lighter) socket. These used to be standard in nearly all vehicles and still largely are, but some car manufacturers no longer include them in select vehicle models. Be sure that your car has a standard 12V socket before getting one of these blankets.

Battery use

Overall, heated travel blankets don’t draw a sizable amount of power from your battery , but some manufacturers specifically note that their blankets are low-amperage. This shouldn’t be a huge issue when the car is running, but if you plan to use a heated travel blanket with the vehicle off, be sure that it draws minimal amperage so you won’t be draining your battery every time you use it.

Temperature

Heated travel blankets usually only become warm, not hot, so you shouldn’t have any issues with them becoming too hot. Some blankets have actually been criticized for not becoming warm enough, which kind of undercuts the whole point of paying up for a powered blanket. Make sure there aren’t any problems with your heated travel blanket under-heating.

The size of the heated travel blanket that you choose is important: too small and the blanket can’t wrap around you and keep you warm, too large and it may feel like it’s taking over the interior of your car. The majority of heated travel blankets are just under 60 inches long, with a width that varies between 30 and 45 inches. Note the size carefully and test out a similarly-sized blanket from your house to verify that such a size will work for you.

A general rule of thumb is to go larger if the blanket is for adults and smaller if it’s for children or pets.

Cord length

The length of the cord that runs from the heated travel blanket to the 12V socket can vary from blanket to blanket and is usually from five to eight feet in length. Get the blanket with the longest cord you can find — with a longer cord, the blanket can be used by anyone in the vehicle, regardless of where they’re sitting.

Temperature settings

Unlike electric blankets for your bed, the ability to select your own temperature with a heated travel blanket is not standard. Some heated travel blankets have a variable settings option, however. This is usually in the form of a switch where you can opt for “high” or “low” temperatures. Rarer still are heated travel blankets with a variable knob you can use to set the temperature across a range of temperatures.

Indicator light

Another non-standard feature you may run across is an LED indicator light. This shows you at a glance when the blanket is running (light on) and when it is not (light off).

Auto shut-off

While you won’t find many safety features in heated travel blankets, one that some blankets incorporate is an auto shut-off feature. This automatically shuts the blanket down when it becomes too hot.

Some heated travel blankets offer a timer feature, which allows you to select when the blanket shuts off, so you don’t have to remember to do it yourself. These timers are usually limited to two or three intervals, ranging from a half-hour to an hour and a half.

Select a heated travel blanket you find attractive. Heated travel blankets are manufactured in a variety of solid colors and patterns, with plaid being quite common. If you want more options in terms of style, choose a blanket that offers a variety of colors and patterns to choose from.

Heated travel blanket prices

Heated travel blankets start out at under $20 and can reach up to around $40.

Inexpensive: The majority of heated travel blankets are in the $25 to $30 range. At $20, you can find simple blankets with little in the way of controls — you plug them in, they work.

Expensive: At higher prices, blanket quality increases, both in terms of the fleece and the inner electronics. Here you can find larger blankets with longer cords and additional features such as temperature controls, auto shut-off features, and timers.

  • When looking for a heated travel blanket, try to avoid ones with too much white in it, as you may have a harder time keeping it looking clean on the road .
  • If you hang your electric blanket to dry over a clothesline, don’t use clothespins to secure it, as this can damage the internal wiring of the blanket.
  • So long as your car’s 12V cigarette lighter works when the car is off, so will your heated travel blanket. 12V adapters on some vehicles are not wired directly to the battery, so they cannot power a blanket when the car is off.
  • While it can take a car up to 10 minutes or more to produce enough heat to warm the vehicle’s interior, the majority of heated travel blankets are warm within a minute or two.
  • For ease of storage, seek out a heated travel blanket that ships with a zippered carry bag.
  • If you need more than one heated travel blanket, search for one that ships in packs containing multiple blankets. This is a great way to save a few dollars instead.
  • If you find yourself a 12V socket short when trying to run your heated travel blanket and other car accessories, consider picking up a 12V splitter.

heat travel blanket

Q. What is polar fleece? A. Heated travel blankets are usually constructed from fleece, a knit fabric that features one side that has been brushed out for a softer feel. Fleece is available in a variety of different types, and one popular type is polar fleece. Used largely in winter jackets and blankets, polar fleece is thicker than regular fleece, making it warmer for cold weather use. Q. How should heated travel blankets be cleaned? A. You would think with the wiring inside that you would not be able to machine wash a heated travel blanket, but this is not necessarily the case. Some manufacturers recommend that you wash your heated travel blanket by hand, while others claim that you can use a machine to wash their blankets if you take the proper care.

If a heated travel blanket can be machine washed, you should first remove any cords or controllers, then soak the blanket in cold, soapy water for 15 minutes to loosen any dirt. After soaking, run the blanket through your machine using cold water on the delicate or gentle cycle and let it spin at the end.

To dry the blanket, tumble dry it on low, or stretch it out over a clothesline or frame to air-dry it. The heated travel blanket should be completely dry before you plug it in and attempt to use it.

Reviews of The Best 12V Heated Blankets

1.schumacher 12v heated travel blanket.

best 12V Heated blanket

  • Ideal for cars, SUVs, RVs, and trucks
  • Can also be used as a seat warmer
  • Manual shut off only

Before mentioning anything else, let’s just get this out of the way – the Schumacher heated travel blanket does not have any automatic temperature settings or a timer function.

Even then, it found its way onto our list. Why?

This is a great blanket to have if you want to keep the heating on all night. Although there’s no electronic controller, you do get an indicator light. To turn the blanket on, plug it into the socket, and check whether the LED light is on.

If the light does not turn on, the unit is not connected properly. Once it switches on, you can expect it to start heating after a few minutes.

It draws 3.7 amps, so be careful about leaving it on all night.

Overall, we think this is a great blanket for areas where the temperature is not very cold.

Advantages:

  •  Works for a longer duration This heating blanket is a great gift for people who don’t need timers. This basic product works exceptionally well to keep you warm at nights while drawing a relatively low amount of current.
  • LED indicator light You’ll have no problem in telling whether the blanket is on thanks to the LED light. If the light is on, the blanket has already started heating up.

Disadvantages:

  • Takes a while to heat up This heated blanket takes a while to get warm enough. You can expect it to take approximately half an hour to heat enough to keep you warm.

2.Sojoy 12V Electric Travel Blanket

Sojoy 12V Electric Travel Blanket

  • Fast heat-up
  • Includes a shut-off timer
  • Equipped with a thermostat and a three-level heat control system

This 12V heated blanket by Sojoy ticks all the right boxes. The dimensions (60” x 30”) are large enough to cover two adults.

It is a soft, comfortable polyester fleece blanket and remains warm even when the power supply is not on. This material acts as an additional layer of insulation.

You get three levels of heat control. The blanket draws just 3.7 amps on the highest settings and reaches temperatures up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

This 12V electric blanket comes equipped with a shutoff timer. You can set it for 30/45/60 minutes to prevent your vehicle’s battery from draining if you fall asleep under this comfortable blanket.

Overall, this is a great blanket with exceptional heating capabilities for people on a budget.

  • Battery saving timer This is a handy feature to have. Simply set a timer to turn the heating mechanism in the blanket off. You won’t have to wake up to turn the blanket off. Or if you doze off the auto shut off function will save your car’s battery.
  • Good material and design As mentioned, this blanket is very soft and warm at the same time. Even when not connected to the power socket, it is extremely warm. The plaid design makes it even more attractive to have on board.
  •  There aren’t any!  This is a phenomenal product, to say the least. It’s affordable and extremely functional. It is easily one of the best-heated blankets in the market right now.

3.Stalwart Electric Heated 12 Volt Fleece Blanket

Stalwart Electric Heated 12 Volt Fleece Blanket

  • Long 96-inch cor
  • Lightweight and easy to use
  • Quick heat technology

This blanket comes with a longer-than-average power cable that measures 96 inches. It offers extra distance helping you reach remote corners of your vehicle (small or big).

It comes equipped with thin wires to keep it heated once connected to a power outlet. You also get a carry case to keep the blanket packed away when not in use.

Its soft and fleecy polyester material keeps you warm even when it is not plugged in. However, it is important to note that you don’t get any temperature control settings with this unit.

To sum things up, we recommend this heated blanket if you need one with a lengthy power cord and good heating capacity.

  • Low cost This 12V electric blanket is a reliable option, no doubt. You get a great product for a price that’s substantially lower than the other blankets available on the market.
  • Quick heating system Within a few minutes, you’ll start to feel the heat generated by this heating blanket. This makes it a great emergency blanket when paired with its reasonable cost.
  • No timer included If you want a blanket for regular bedtime use, this may not be the best choice. It doesn’t have a timer so you’ll end up getting out of bed more often.
  • No temperature control This may not be an issue considering the affordable price but if you need a controlled environment in your car, this may not be the electric blanket for you.

4.Roadpro 12-Volt Polar Fleece Heated Blanket

Roadpro 12-Volt Polar Fleece Heated Blanket

  • 100% polar fleece sure to keep you warm
  • LED indicator on the plug
  • 8-foot power cord, ideal for smaller vehicles

Let’s start with the size of this blanket. Its dimensions are 58 by 42.5 inches, making it an ideal family model. If you prefer traveling with your significant other or your family, this is the best heating solution to keep them warm.

Although the material itself is pleasantly warm, you can connect it to your car’s cigarette lighter socket to enjoy it at its best. The blanket generates temperatures up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Coming to the energy draw, there are more efficient variants available. Yet, this electric blanket’s 4.6-amp draw does not run down your battery when used sparingly.

It is good for your battery life but, unfortunately, does not come with any other noteworthy features. The power cord is just 8 feet long.

This electric blanket is a good option if you want a basic heating blanket to keep you warm for a long time.

  • Low power consumption This blanket draws less power than most others. You can enjoy its warmth for a few hours at least without draining your vehicle’s battery.
  • Impressive size You can enjoy its warmth with your loved ones without worrying about the space.
  • No special features Don’t expect a lot of exciting features with this blanket. It is a good heating blanket but does not come with temperature control settings nor an auto shut-off system.

5.Car Cozy 2 – 12-Volt Heated Blanket

One of the best 12V heated blanket

  • Automatic shut-off functionality included
  • Plugs into any 12V power outlet
  • Made with 100% high-quality polyester fleece

If you’re looking for a super-soft heating blanket that you can take on road trips, this Car Cozy 2 12V Heated Blanket is for you.

It warms up within minutes and its size lets it easily accommodate two people.

With this heating blanket, you get its patented safety timer. Set it to 30 or 45 minutes, and the heating mechanism will be automatically cut off after the set time. This lets you sleep without having to worry about turning the heated blanket off to prevent your vehicle from running out of juice.

Alongside the timer, you’ll find a reset button and automatic temperature control. Also, you can easily check if it’s working thanks to the LED indicator light.

You get an average power draw of 4 amps and an 84-inch power cord with this amazing product. If you ask us, the Car Cozy 2 blanket has it all.

  • Timer, reset button, and automatic temperature control Simply slide the timer button to set it to 30 or 45 minutes based on your needs. After the set time, the machine turns off automatically allowing you to sleep without any distraction. You also get a reset button on the top right corner of the remote.
  • LED power light Some heated blankets are not easy to use right from the beginning. There’s no way to know whether they’re on until they start warming up. But this 12V heated blanket comes with an LED light to indicate that it is on.
  • A bit pricey This product is on the expensive side when it comes to heated blankets. But for all the great features, we would not mind spending a few more dollars on this one.

6.Maxsa Innovations Large Heated Blanket

Maxsa Innovations Large Heated Blanket

  • Durable and long-lasting design
  • Available in multiple colors and patterns
  • Automatic timer

There is so much going on with the Maxsa Innovations Heated Blanket that we don’t know where to start. It measures 41 x 57 inches and is big enough to cover two individuals.

Thanks to its automatic timer, you won’t have to worry about battery drainage due to leaving it on all night. Before you sleep just set the timer to 30 or 45 minutes and press the power button. The timer will automatically turn off the device after the selected duration.

Also, it has an in-built 10-amp fuse to ensure it doesn’t draw too much current and overheat. This is important in RVs since they have more flammable materials than typical houses. This electric blanket draws just 4 amps from your battery, so there won’t be any drainage unless you use it excessively.

It takes around 15 minutes to heat up but after that it holds the heat well.

  • 84-inch power cord This 12V heated blanket comes with a long and extremely useful power cable. This means you can easily use it to keep you warm even if you’re at a distance from your vehicle.
  • Built-in safety fuse and timer To prevent it from overheating, the fuse goes off if the current exceeds 10 amps. This saves battery and stops the product from overheating.
  • At the higher end of the price range You will end up spending a lot on this heated blanket. But it does come with several important safety features that justify its price.

7.Camco Polar Fleece Heated Blanket

Camco Polar Fleece Heated Blanket

  • Low amperage draw saves battery
  • A great addition to your car’s emergency kit
  • 100% polar fleece

With a heavy-duty 84-inch power cord that plugs into your dash or any 12V outlet, the Camco heated blanket measures 43 x 59 inches. It easily covers two people or wraps around an individual multiple times.

Automatic shut-off is a great addition for any heated blanket, but it’s not essential. If you don’t necessarily need this feature, then the CAMCO heated blanket may be a good fit for you.

This blanket does take a while to get heated, drawing slightly more power than some other electric blankets on our list.

Besides consuming more power, you also don’t get the choice of switching the heat settings. While there are other models with exceptional capabilities, this is a good option if you’re looking for a budget model.

  • Soft and warm fabric Made from soft polyester fleece material, even if it is not turned on, the blanket’s material will still keep you thoroughly warm.
  • Heavy-duty power cord Not many heated blankets come with such a long power cord. You can easily connect it to the cigarette lighter socket in your car and use it anywhere in the vehicle.
  • Not energy-efficient Most 12V heated blankets draw up to 3 amps of current. But this one from Camco sucks up a lot of your vehicle’s battery with a draw of 5 amps.

8.Zento Deals Electric Heated Car 12V Blanket

Zento Deals Electric Heated Car 12V Blanket

The blanket’s dimensions are 56 x 40 inches which leaves enough room to cuddle with your loved ones.

What we liked about this heated blanket was its safety. The approved wires used in it are extremely safe and nonflammable.

Overall, this product gets a big thumbs up from us despite its expensive price.

  • Temperature control With this heated blanket, you can adjust the temperature to your liking up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. This is not a common feature that you’ll come across in 12V heated blankets.
  • Safe wiring This product boasts approved wires that ensure maximum safety. These wires don’t burn.
  • A bit expensive The Zento Deals heated blanket is quite expensive. But when you look at the plethora of features it boasts, its high price is automatically justified.

9.Electrowarmth Twin Heated Pad

Electrowarmth Twin Heated Pad

  • No fumes or noise
  • Radiates heat from below
  • Low amp draw

Going on a long journey?

The Electrowarmth twin heated pad makes a great companion to take with you. It radiates heat from underneath letting you pass out in a peaceful slumber. A few improvements have come in since the initial release, but that just proves the brand’s determination to serve their customers.

The relaxing sensation helps relieve pain and stiffness. The manufacturer also claims that the product provides relief from body aches due to arthritis and fibromyalgia.

When you drive a truck, the struggle of taking a break is a menace. Stopping every few hours to stay warm can turn a rather short trip into a long painful journey.

To operate the warning pad, you get multiple comfort control levels. With levels from one to seven, it offers maximum temperature control.

What we liked was this product is hand washable and comes in many sizes to fit any mattress.

  • Multiple sizes available When it comes to heated blankets, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. With this model, you get to pick from five different sizes.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee In addition to the one year warranty, you get a 30-day money-back guarantee. If the product does not function properly due to a manufacturing defect, you’ll get a full refund.
  • Fuel-saving Instead of idling the truck for a little warmth, you can plug in this pad to remain warm without burning a lot of fuel.
  • Longer heating time This pad takes a while to start heating. So we recommend turning it on half an hour in advance.

Buyers Guide to Pick the Best 12V Heated Blanket

After you’ve bought a vehicle, buying a heating blanket may not seem like a big deal. However, you’ll rely on the blanket to keep you warm during long chilly rides. This makes it even more important to choose the right one.

There are many things you must consider before investing in a heated blanket. Some of these factors include the cost, size, shut-off mechanism, and the length of cord.

Factors to Consider Before Buying a Heated Blanket

You’ll be surprised to see that there are quite a few aspects to consider when buying a heated blanket. Let’s see what they are.

One of the deciding factors is the cost of the heated blanket. You don’t necessarily need to invest in an expensive heating blanket for your vehicle. Just get one that fits your budget and can keep you warm on road trips.

Spending more on over-the-top blankets is not recommended unless you’re a frequent traveler and can afford it.

Generally, the basic heated blankets will cost you anywhere between $30 to $50. But it is not guaranteed that getting a more expensive blanket will get you more features. So keep an eye out for the specifications and don’t pay more than the product offers you

Power Supply

Do you intend to use the blanket only in your vehicle or do you want to be able to use it at home too?

If you want a versatile option, look for a heated blanket that comes with different socket attachments. This is an easy way to get the most out of a heating blanket instead of leaving it in the trunk of your vehicle.

Most 12V heated blankets only connect to your car’s lighter socket. A multi-purpose blanket will, however, connect to both AC/DC sockets. This feature may increase the average cost of the blanket but will make a lot of difference.

Additionally, you can charge the battery at any power outlet with a flexible socket.

Automatic Shut-Off

Some heated blankets come with the auto shut-off feature. It kicks into action when the temperature rises above a specified level or after a period of time. This is extremely helpful since you don’t need to turn the blanket off repeatedly.

Not many 12V electric blankets include this amazing feature. Yet we’ve done our best to find the ones which do have the automatic shut-off capability for a reasonable price.

An average shut-off duration is 30-minutes. The electric blankets including this feature typically reach a good heating temperature and then turn off themselves to avoid overheating. Make sure you get a heated blanket with the auto shut-off feature to avoid the consequences.

Temperature Control and Heats Levels

Most 12V heated blankets have just an on and off switch. This doesn’t give you much control over the temperature.

If you like monitoring the temperature in your vehicle, this is not enough.

For people who like to be in control, we highly recommend getting a heating blanket with at least dual temperature settings – high and low.

The more heat settings you get with the electric blanket, the more temperature control you’ll have in your car.

This is a rare feature in 12V electric blankets especially when you’re on a budget. Yet, we’ve found a few affordable options for you.

Heating Speed

A heated blanket won’t be much help if it takes too long to start heating up. This makes it important to look at the speed of heating, especially if you’re driving in low-temperature regions. If you drive a truck, a fast-heating blanket can make a big difference. Of course, if it takes a little longer than you’d like, you can preheat the blanket before a trip to ensure that it is warm when you are ready to travel.

The Material and Comfort

Heated blankets come in various materials and sport attractive designs. Pick a blanket that is at least a little warm when it is not connected to a power supply.

Fabrics like polyester fleece are good enough to keep you warm on a road trip.

This may not be a critical aspect if the blanket is just a part of an emergency kit. In this case, get a blanket that heats quickly and effectively keeps your body heated during emergencies.

If you’re using it most of the time, you can get a heated blanket that matches your car’s interiors.

Length of Power Cord

The cable length is as important as temperature control. There is no point in owning a blanket if it does not reach your vehicle’s backseat to keep the passengers warm. Or if you own an RV and the electric cord does not reach the seating area.

Heated blanket cords are up to 8 feet long and sometimes come with extensions. The length of the cord must be enough to reach the right spot. For example, a shorter cable may not reach the back of your SUV. There’s no reason to own such a blanket as it won’t keep your passengers warm as intended.

Power Consumption

How long can you operate the blanket without draining your vehicle’s battery?

This is a big factor you cannot ignore. If the blanket draws too much charge, steer clear of it, especially if you expect to use the blanket for long periods of time.

A quality heated blanket has the potential to turn a long cold drive into a fun trip. Make sure you look at all the specifications and then decide. It is also recommended to weigh the product’s cost against all the features you get. There’s no point in paying more if the product has nothing to offer.

Invest wisely so you can count on it to keep you warm for a long time.

Reviews & Recommendations

Best Overall

Roadpro 12-Volt Polar Fleece Heated Travel Blanket

The Roadpro 12-volt heated car blanket is 100 percent polar fleece and plugs into a cigarette lighter socket. The blanket is 58 inches long by 42.5 inches wide and comes in a zippered storage bag. It includes an eight-foot power cord with an LED indicator and has a 4.6 low amp draw (55 Watts). The blanket is pre-set to reach a max operating temperature of 110 F to 115 F degrees.

The Roadpro starts working as soon as it is plugged into a power source, and even when it's turned off, the blanket feels nice and warm. One advantage is that the cord stretches far enough to reach passengers in the backseat.

One downside is that the blanket is not machine-washable. Also, it can take a while to warm up to your desired temperature. The blanket does not have an adjustable temperature setting, and there have been a couple of reports that the wiring can catch fire.

Heated 12 Volt Fleece Travel Throw for Car and RV by Stalwart

The Stalwart 12-volt electric blanket is 100 percent polyester and features an eight-foot cord that plugs into car, truck and RV cigarette lighters. The blanket is 59 inches long by 43 inches wide and comes in a storage case with handles. It is lightweight and is easily folded for storage.

The blanket is very warm even when it is not plugged in, and it takes 10 minutes or less to reach a comfortable temperature. One benefit is that it does not get too hot to the touch. Also, it does not overheat. The material is durable, and the blanket is a decent size. In addition, it features an indicator on the plug that lets you know when it is on and working.

The blanket does not have an automatic shut-off switch, which may be a deal breaker if you want to keep the heat on for a long period of time without forgetting about it. Also, the blanket is not machine-washable and does not feature a high/low setting. Finally, the built-in heating elements struggle to reach high temperatures.

Honorable Mention

If you’re searching for a soft blanket that’ll cover multiple people on long road trips, the Car Cozy 12-Volt Heated Travel Blanket is just what you need. Sized just big enough to blanket two people with its warmth, it measures 58 x 42 inches and is as comfortable to the touch as it is cozy with a little extra heat.

Made with plush polyester-based polar fleece, this heated blanket is designed to work while plugged in or as a typical heat-free blanket. It’s a great road trip companion thanks to its 12-volt plug, which works with any 12-volt outlet (though you will need an adapter if you want to use it at home). And, its 7-foot power cord gives you plenty of room. Additionally, you can trust in its safety thanks to the built-in safety timer with automatic shut-off.

The only significant disadvantage of this heated car blanket is its lack of temperature settings. You don’t have the option to set a custom heating level — the blanket is on when it’s on, and that’s that. This sole heat level may not be warm enough for very cold weather.

AJP Distributors 12V Car Heated Blanket

With most heated blankets, you don’t have a lot of customization — but with the AJP Distributors 12V Car Heated Blanket, you get more choices. This soft blanket will literally wrap you up in warmth with extra heat delivered right from your vehicle’s 12-volt outlet. It offers three different heat settings so you can decide whether you want to be totally toasty or gently warmed.

Specifically designed to be used in cars, trucks, RVs, and other kinds of vehicles, this heated blanket is travel-ready. Its 12-volt plug works in any vehicle’s cigarette lighter or power outlet and plugs in directly. It measures 59 x 43 inches in size. When it comes to heat, you’ll be able to choose from three different settings: high, medium, or low. This allows you to adjust based on personal preferences or changing weather.

Although the product describes its material as flannel and wool fabric, it’s important to note that the blanket is actually made out of polar fleece, a polyester blend of fabric. While it’s certainly soft and cozy, it’s also breathable — but it’s nothing like flannel or wool.

Zone Tech Sherpa Fleece Travel Blanket

If convenience and handy features are what you want from a heated car blanket, you’ve got to get your hands on the Zone Tech Sherpa Fleece Travel Blanket. Made with premium materials for durability, smooth and reliable performance, and total comfort in the cold, this blanket goes above and beyond. It’s even more convenient, thanks in part to the handy remote control that’s included.

This travel- and car-ready heated blanket measures 60 x 50 inches in size and works with any vehicle’s 12-volt outlet. It features two different material textures, one on either side: a soft sherpa fleece and a velvet-like plush. However, the entire blanket is actually made out of the same polyester material for durability and total comfort as long as you enjoy its warmth.

There’s no denying that convenience is the biggest perk of this car blanket, though. You’ll have a smart remote attached to the blanket’s power cord, which features a power button plus temperature control buttons. A temperature indicator screen allows you to see the blanket’s exact temperature, and you can turn it up or down — it’ll even go as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit!

Best Large Blanket

MAXSA 20014 Large Heated Travel Blanket

MAXSA 20014 Large Heated Travel Blanket

The MAXSA Heated Travel Blanket provides gentle heat whenever you connect it to a 12-volt power outlet in your car, boat, or RV. It is warm and comfy and measures 41 by 57 inches. It is big enough to cover two people. The blanket also comes with a seven-foot cord that can extend to the back seat of your car. You can program it to automatically switch off after 30 or 45 minutes. That way, it won’t drain the car’s battery.

This heated car blanket will keep you warm as you camp, commute, or travel in cold weather. It is made of polyester fleece, a fabric with an exceptional ability to retain heat. Polyester fleece is naturally warm, so the blanket will stay warm even when it's not plugged in. It is available in three different colors: red plaid, leopard, and navy blue.

But here’s something you may not know: Most heated car blankets only use 12 volts. As a result, they don’t get very warm, and that’s the main issue with this blanket. Many people complain that it does not get warm and that they still feel cold when using it. Also, the plastic electrical cord insulation may get frayed after moderate usage, revealing the inner copper wire.

Our Verdict

Our top pick for the best-heated car blanket is the Car Cozy Heated Travel Blanket by Trillium Worldwide . It is large, soft, and warm even when it’s not turned on. If you’re looking for something a little less pricey, consider the Roadpro 12-Volt Polar Fleece Heated Travel Blanket .

Features To Know Before Buying

Automatic shut-off .

Some heating blankets for cars include an automatic shut-off feature. An auto shut-off can kick in when the temperature gets too high or after a specified amount of time, i.e., 30 minutes. This allows you to use the blanket and not have to worry about turning it off. Most electric heated blankets do not have this feature.

Number of Temperature Settings

If you like to control a range of heating options, consider purchasing a plug-in car blanket that has at least dual controls for temperature settings (high and low). The more heat settings you have, the easier you will be able to control how hot the electric travel blanket will get. Few 12-volt heated blankets have this feature.

Indicator Light

Some heated travel blankets have an indicator on the cord that lets you know when the product is functioning. The indicator lights up when the blanket is on. The light turns off when the blanket is off. This will allow you to look at the indicator to determine if the blanket is on without having to touch it.

Types of Heated Car Blankets

Cars, trucks, boats and other vehicles have 12-volt sockets, which are also known as 12-volt auxiliary power outlets or cigarette lighters. They deliver power to portable electronics, such as heated car blankets. A plug-in car blanket is powered up through the 12-volt sockets. Some vehicles contain multiple sockets to power several accessory devices at once.

With new cars, most have ditched the 12V accessory port for USB outlets. These can also power some smaller heated car blankets.

Heated Car Blanket Pricing

Heated car blankets aren't expensive and, typically, they cost between $30-$50.

You've got questions. The Drive has answers.

Q: How long does a heated car blanket take to heat up?

A: It depends on the product. Some heated car blankets will start to get warm shortly after you plug them into a power source. Others take several minutes before reaching the desired temperature.

Q: Do heated car blankets retain heat after they’re turned off?

A: Heated blankets can retain heat for a short time after they're turned off. Some can stay warm for 15 to 30 minutes. Eventually, they will cool off and act as a regular, non-heated blanket.

Q: Are heated car blankets safe?

A: Some heated car blankets have shut-off timers to prevent them from getting too hot, thus ensuring the user's safety. Electric blankets that stay on indefinitely have the potential to be problematic if they are not monitored during use.

Q: Will a heated car blanket stay on when the vehicle is off?

A: It depends on what type of 12-volt plug you have in your vehicle. Some plugs only function when the vehicle is on or when it is placed in accessory mode. If the 12-volt outlet works without the engine running, the blanket will stay on while the vehicle is turned off.

T hese materials have active particles permanently embedded which store and release heat to keep you comfy all night long . This cooling blanket from Elegear is double-sided — one side is 100% cotton, while the other features the brand's Arc-Chill cooling yarns for a cool-to-the-touch feel. You can enjoy the natural feel of cotton with the option for a chiller side in warmer weather. Available in eight colors and four sizes, this blanket is perfect for your bedroom or living room. Tester notes: When I put this blanket on my bed, it didn't look as stylish as my usual quilt, but it felt so much cooler. The thin, lightweight material had an instantly cool feel with a smooth, soft texture. I liked using this pick as both a couch throw and a bed blanket during the summer.

REST Evercool Cooling Comforter

Evercool Cooling Comforter

Moisture-wicking materials help keep you cooler by quickly moving sweat away to keep you dry. This thin comforter from REST has an immediately cool-to-the-touch feel and excellent moisture-wicking capabilities. Amazon is currently offering coupons for each of the three sizes —you can get the Full/Queen size for $84 off right now!

Tester notes: Testers were impressed with this pick's cooling abilities. One tester said, "It feels soft and cool (almost icy even), providing much-needed relief in hot weather" and another said, "I no longer wake up drenched in sweat!" This pick is available in three colors, but testers gave it lower appearance scores when used without a duvet cover.

The Citizenry Stonewashed Linen Quilt

Stonewashed Linen Quilt

Linen has an airy, natural feel that is ideal for hot sleepers. This linen blanket from The Citizenry is available in 13 stylish colors to complement your other bedding perfectly. When I evaluated this quilt, I was impressed with its high-quality construction and chic box stitching. I appreciated how soft it felt compared to other linen fabrics.

Tester notes: All testers shared that they loved the appearance of this quilt with some saying that it looked high-end and luxurious. "With this linen one, it doesn't overdo it with the heat, so I'm able to sleep with it on me all night," reported one tester who said she usually kicks off her quilt during the night. Another tester said, "I also often get hot at night, and this quilt feels lightweight enough that I don't get as hot as I do in a traditional duvet."

Bearaby Tree Napper

Tree Napper

A weighted blanket can help encourage sleep and relaxation, but added weight can mean added heat. Avoid overheating with this knitted weighted blanket from Bearaby. The thick knit allows ample airflow through the blanket, so you sleep cooler. It's made with Tencel, which wicks away moisture to keep you dry and comfortable, and cotton for a soft feel. It's available in three weights and seven color options. Note that the higher weights cost more.

Tester notes: "I like how the woven material allows for breathability while being nestled beneath it," said one tester. "I didn't overheat and wasn't cold either." All testers gave high marks for appearance, but some said it was challenging to clean as there's no cover. Another tester said, "I’m a super hot sleeper, and this feels cool to the touch, and the open structure makes it much more breathable than my other weighted blanket." She added, "I sleep so well under it."

Avocado Mattress Organic Cotton Gauze Blanket

Organic Cotton Gauze Blanket

If you want to outfit your bed in both organic and cooling bedding, look no further than this airy blanket from Avocado. It's made with four layers of GOTS-certified organic cotton muslin for a natural, lived-in look that's breathable and lightweight. You can pair it with a thicker comforter in the winter or use it solo in the warmer months. Don't worry about complicated laundering as this pick is machine washable and dryer safe.

Tester notes: "With this blanket, I was able to stay cool overnight," said one tester who identified as a hot sleeper. All testers said they would continue to use this blanket after testing, especially liking its lightweight feel that didn't trap heat. Some testers wished this blanket was softer. "This will be a great blanket for summer," noted another tester. "I can’t sleep without a blanket, no matter how hot it is, because I need the weight and feeling of a blanket." One tester appreciated that the blanket had no odor when it arrived and came with an included bag made of the same material for convenient storage.

Boll & Branch Waffle Bed Blanket

Waffle Bed Blanket

Cotton is the most popular bedding material because it has a soft, natural feel, but it absorbs moisture, which can make it feel sweaty. This blanket from Boll & Branch has a springy waffle weave, which allows more airflow. It's made with 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton fabric that's preshrunk with an oversized fit to drape beautifully on your bed. Because of the cotton material, this blanket is warmer than our other picks.

Tester notes: All testers gave this blanket high marks for appearance and comfort with most saying they will continue using it after testing. " I liked that the bed blanket was very soft," said one tester who used it both on its own and with a comforter. Another tester said, "It was breathable and the waffle texture is nice and comfortable." O ne analyst noted that the waffle weave adds visual texture to an otherwise smooth-looking bed.

This blanket is also a 2024 Good Housekeeping Bedding Awards winner!

Buffy Eucalyptus Duvet Cover

Eucalyptus Duvet Cover

Buffy's duvet inserts are one of the most popular cooling comforters among our testers, and they also loved this duvet cover. Cool and incredibly soft to the touch, Buffy's duvet covers feature a smooth fabric made of Tencel lyocell fibers that's available in 30+ colors. While this duvet cover may have "eucalyptus" in its name, it's made with a regenerated cellulose fiber that doesn't have any eucalyptus in the final product. More information about misleading bamboo and eucalyptus claims can be found in our shopping guide below.

Tester notes: "It's soft and silky to the touch and was perfect for warmer nights," said one tester. She also appreciated its "luxurious look." When I used this duvet cover, I especially liked the fabric's slight sheen and lightweight, cool feel. The cover was a bit wrinkly after laundering, according to testers.

LUXOME Lightweight Cooling Blanket

Lightweight Cooling Blanket

This lightweight cooling blanket from Luxome is made from viscose, which has a silky smooth feel and easily wicks moisture away for a cooler feel. Note that viscose is a regenerated cellulose fiber that uses bamboo wood pulp at the start of production; but, because of chemical solvents, it doesn't contain any bamboo in the final product. This pick is available in six colors and two sizes: Full/Queen and King/Cal King.

Tester notes: " As a hot sleeper, the lightweight blanket has been a great relief to me," said one tester. All testers reported that this blanket helped regulate their body temperature all night, making it ideal for the summer months. " I loved the silky smooth finish and how lightweight the blanket is, " said another tester. "The blanket felt very cool to the touch, and I did not overheat during the night when using this blanket."

How we tested the best cooling blankets

line break

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , the Textiles Lab tests many different types of bedding — from cooling sheets and comforters to mattress pads. We work with consumer testers and conduct Lab tests to assess bedding and we have collected thousands of data points over the years for analysis. In our most recent blankets tests, we analyzed 68 blankets for appearance and performance properties with over a hundred at-home testers .

To determine the best cooling blanket options, I vetted each pick's cooling claims and analyzed thousands of data points from years of rigorous testing before making these selections.

What to look for when shopping for the best cooling blankets

line break

✔️ Cooling technologies: Certain blankets feature cooling technologies that store and release heat to keep you at a more stable body temperature throughout the night. Look for temperature-regulating technology like Outlast or 37.5 for a proven cooler sleep.

✔️ Breathable materials : While some fabrics hold onto moisture, others wick it away to keep you sweat-free. Opt for synthetic fabrics like polyester or regenerated cellulose fibers like lyocell. Cotton holds onto moisture more, so if you love the natural feel of cotton, go with a blended material or a lightweight option.

✔️ Lightweight construction : Blankets that are designed for the winter months will be thicker and more tightly woven. For an airier feel, look for looser knits or weaves without any added bulk.

✔️ Fits your home: In the end, the best cooling blanket for you needs to fit with your home's decor and your lifestyle. Make sure to think about where you plan on using the blanket before purchasing: Is it for movie nights on the couch? Sleeping? Year-round or just summer use? Then, make sure to pick a style that has the right dimensions and construction for your needs.

✔️ Be wary of "bamboo" or "eucalyptus" claims : These types of materials are actually known as viscose, rayon or lyocell and they're fibers made from regenerated cellulose, meaning the wood pulp from different plants is dissolved in a chemical solvent before being pushed through an extruder to form fibers. Because of this chemical process, the final product doesn't contain any of the original cellulose material. Regenerated cellulose fibers can help keep you cool because of their moisture-wicking capabilities, but you shouldn't buy them just because they claim to be plant-based or natural.

If you’re thinking, “Do infrared sauna blankets really work?,” we’re here to tell you that yes, they do. “A traditional sauna or dry sauna usually heats a room, either using an electric heater or burning wood to create heat, which then results in an increase in the room’s temperature and of your body’s temperature as a result,” explains Certified Holistic Health Coach at Parsley Health, Jessie Lucking . “Conversely, the infrared sauna blanket emits far infrared light to heat your body directly. This infrared heat penetrates deeper into the tissues which many feel provides more significant health benefits than a traditional sauna.”

Because sauna blankets use infrared technology to warm the muscles and deep tissue without overheating your entire body, you’ll sweat more at a lower temperature. The experience is totally different from a traditional sauna — you won’t be in a puddle of sweat by the end of your session in a sauna blanket. But you can rest assured you’re getting similar benefits: Even without the foggy steam, s auna blankets will help most people to break a good swea t, relax tight muscles, and calm a frenetic mind. Testing Verdict: Top 3 Sauna Blankets of 2024

Infrared sauna blankets vary in size, the number of heat settings and zones, and price points. The best sauna blanket for you will comfortably fit your body up to your shoulders and should include a temperature range that feels tolerable for up to 30 minutes of use. Because of the variation within the category and due to individual needs, we opted to highlight the three top infrared sauna blankets we tested versus one best overall option.

  • Sun Home Saunas Infrared Sauna Blanket : Our favorite infrared sauna blanket for beginners, this editor’s choice pick comes with all of the special features of the priciest option on our list, but for $200 less. The blanket features a built-in remote that allows you to quickly calibrate the heat before use, and features weighty, luxurious materials that have held up to a year of consistent use by one of our WWD Shop editors. We love the shoulder straps that help retain body heat while you’re using it, and that it’s easy to store.
  • HigherDose Infrared Sauna Blanket : The best luxury sauna blanket on our list, HigherDose’s option features layers of charcoal and clay that help disperse the heat evenly so you don’t experience hot spots during your session. It’s also slightly larger than other options on our list, making it the best choice for tall sauna bathers. The vegan leather material is easy to clean, and an industrial-grade zipper makes it easy to get yourself in and out.
  • LifePro BioRemedy Infrared Sauna Blanket : Our testers’ favorite budget-friendly sauna blanket was LifePro’s model, which delivered a similar intensity of heat as the pricier options on our list. The design includes two zippered openings to reach your arms through, which allows you to read or scroll while you’re inside, and makes it simpler to get in and out of the blanket.

Sun Home Saunas Infrared Sauna Blanket

Our WWD Shop editors were highly impressed with functionality and special features of Sun Home Saunas’ infrared blanket. With easy-to-clean materials and industrial grade velcro straps to seal in your shoulders, it’s a great beginner sauna blanket at a high-value price point. The device has a fully customizable timer, so you can set your session to the exact amount of time you have for relaxing (many other options have timers set at 15 minute increments). It’s made with a weighty, luxury material that feels akin to a weighted blanket when you use it, but its small profile folds down to a small enough footprint for slipping under the bed or in a closet. Editor testing and review notes: “A standout feature in this sauna blanket is the inclusion of shoulder straps that fall onto your chest — this allows you to fully seal your body into the blanket to contain the heat. It also lets me to scoot up in the blanket to free my arms for reading or scrolling during a session. I’ve worked my way up to the highest heat setting after a few months of usage, and even with a few sessions a week, the blanket feels good as new. My only complaint is that the remote is on the end of the blanket, so you have to sit up to adjust the temperature setting if you’re already in the blanket.” What testers say: “I’m really loving my new sauna blanket! It’s so easy to use, very compact, and very cozy. I have Fibromyalgia and this amazing blanket helps so much especially on my flare up days. It definitely helps with joint pain and stiffness. I have been using it before bedtime and it’s really helped me to relax and sleep deeper.” Price upon publish date of this article: $499

HigherDose’s option is the luxury sauna blanket that popularized the at-home sauna category. Crafted with grounding medical-grade magnetic strips and charcoal and clay layers, this top-of-the-line infrared blanket also promotes healthy blood circulation, relieves sore muscles and pains, decreases cortisol, and increases serotonin to aid your body in regenerative relaxation. This latest model is also roomier than previous iterations and comes outfitted with an industrial zipper that makes it easy to get in and out of the blanket. A handheld remote allows you to toggle through the device’s extensive heat settings while you’re inside for convenience, too. Editor testing and review notes: “I slide into HigherDose’s sauna blanket after a long day on-the-move or at my desk, and within 30 minutes on level 5, my hips feel looser, my back feels more flexible, and best of all, my head feels clearer. The temperature range makes the blanket feel soothing, never stifling. And the material has a nice weight to it, which helps enhance the calming effect while I’m laying inside. After owning and using the blanket for a year, it still works good as new, with no issues with the zipper closure or weathering of the material.” What testers say: “My husband and I both workout quite a bit and we both agree that using the blanket after a workout has definitely sped up muscle recovery. I have also been battling arthritis pain in my knees and hips and whenever I am in the blanket, I get so much relief. On top of all this, it is so relaxing. The minute I get under it, I feel like I could fall asleep right away.” Price upon publish date of this article: $699

An impressively high heat range makes LifePro BioRemedy Infrared Sauna Blanket a bona fide sweat machine. The blanket includes two disposable thermal wraps to slip inside before use — these optional inserts will help contain the blanket’s heat to give you an intense sweat. We love that this design features zippers to reach your arms outside of the blanket while you’re cooking, so you can click the remote or scroll away while you’re inside. The lifetime warranty is a major selling point, too. Editor testing and review notes: “While LifePro’s infrared sauna blanket doesn’t have all of the special features you’ll find with luxury options from brands like Sun Home Saunas and HigherDose, the blanket is an excellent starter set for those who want to test out the wellness tool without investing $500. The main difference is the thickness of the material and heat distribution: LifePro’s is thinner than pricier alternatives and prone to feel hotter in certain areas than others. Despite these minor kinks, it’s impressively effective and durable for the price.” What testers say: “All the sauna benefits without the sauna problems. This doesn’t burn my face, lips, or throat by breathing in scorching air. My sauna blanket heats up quickly so I get the most of the session. I relax on the bed, watch TV, and melt away the aches and pains.” Price upon publish date of this article: $169.99

A premium vegan leather exterior and waterproof lining make Hydragun’s HeatPod Infrared Sauna Blanket are just two reasons this sauna blanket is a luxurious pick that’s worth the spend. It also features safety elements like a heat protective layer that falls between the heated coils and sweat-resistant lining, which prevents flare ups in certain areas of the sauna blanket. The sleek black design includes a compact storage bag, remote control, and plush towel insert that makes clean up easy. And this top infrared sauna blanket has a nice weight to it, so you’ll be lulled into deep relaxation when you rest inside. What testers say: “This HeatPod blanket has been an essential part of my recovery from a fall that left my back and shoulder badly injured. Not only does it alleviate the pain, it also helps me mentally reset. I am a very active person and this has been helping me get back on track.” Price upon publish date of this article: $499

MiHigh’s Infrared Sauna Blanket competes with the top-rated sauna blankets in temperature range and high quality materials — it features a polyurethane leather exterior and a waterproof lining and a comfortable, efficient temperature range for those who like mild to high heat. This blanket is one of the easiest to clean out of all the options on our list. It fully unzips into a flat blanket-like shape that lets you wipe down every inch of the lining. This sauna blanket is compact, too, as it folds down into a flat rectangle for easy storage in the closet or under your bed. What testers say: “I love saunas and have done a fair share of reading in regards to their mental and health benefits. This is a fantastic alternative to a classical sauna. You will feel relaxed, calm, and break great sweat. It helps me recover after a workout or a long day at work and has impacted my sleep positively. I’m using it almost daily.” Price upon publish date of this article: $499

For those who can handle the heat, Reviiv’s Infrared Sauna Blanket can warm up to 185°F at full power, making it the hottest option on our list. However it’s also outfitted with safety features to prevent scalding, including a weighty lining and EMF blockers. It’s also one of the few infrared sauna blankets on our list that comes with a towel insert — this not only provides a comfortable, soft experience when you slip in, but also makes it a breeze to clean between uses. (You can throw Reviiv’s cotton insert in the washing machine with your load of workout clothes .) What testers say: “The sauna blanket comes nicely packaged in a portable bag. The blanket was of better quality than I was anticipating. It is very durable, easy to set up, use and clean. I was able to tolerate the 60 minutes but could not imagine increasing the temp until my body adjusts to this first. It was warm and snuggly but the longer I was in, the more the sweat started to pour. Loved it and can’t wait to incorporate this multiple times during the week.” Price upon publish date of this article: $299

Using advanced infrared technology to create a thermal effect in the body, the Ete Etmate Sauna Blanket promotes better blood circulation as it makes you break a serious sweat. Its upper double zipper design allows you to release your hands while the sauna blanket is in use while also providing a convenient user experience. On top of a comfortable temperature range, the device has an auto-shut off feature that prevents the blanket from exceeding 185°F. What testers say: “This sauna blanket has been a great addition to my stay-at-home time in the evenings after a workout in my stay-at-gym and then a shower. It gets hot and you sweat a lot but feel very relaxed afterwards.” Price upon publish date of this article: $96

Heat Healer Infrared Sauna Blanket

The Heat Healer is composed of 96 smooth jade and tourmaline stones that distribute heat with maximum infrared emissivity and EMF blocking technology. The sauna blanke t is made of amide fabric, the same material used for an astronaut’s spacesuit. It’s lightweight, durable and heat resistant, and this best infrared sauna blanket also comes with a waterproof head pillow for a full at-home sauna setup. Plus, the brand provides great directional videos with a fast response time to ensure users get the most out of what can be an intimidating gadget. Editor testing and review notes: What testers say: “I discovered this blanket after lots of research, and it’s the best I have ever tried. My previous ones broke easily. The Heat Healer has superb quality materials and manufacturing. I’m using it for 50 minutes, three times a week and it is helping me recover from a surgery. Is easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store. A great investment to improve life.” Price upon publish date of this article: $478.40

Are Infrared Sauna Blankets Safe?

It’s always best to check with your primary care physician before you test a new wellness device, especially if you have an existing medical condition. “Saunas may be contraindicated in pregnancy, individuals with certain autoimmune conditions, poorly controlled blood pressure, diabetes, abnormal heart rhythms, unstable angina and advanced heart failure or heart valve disease,” Lucking explains.

Also consider existing skin conditions: “Infrared radiation exposure is associated with worsening of conditions like rosacea and melasma,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner. “Heat exposure can cause flushing of the skin and a flare of rosacea.”

For most people, the biggest risk of using a sauna blanket boils down to dehydration . “The risks of using an infrared sauna blanket are similar to that of a traditional sauna and include symptoms of overheating and dehydration,” Lucking explains. So b efore you zip yourself in, be sure you’re adequately hydrated, keep a water bottle nearby, and continue drinking plenty of water after your session.

Be sure to read your device’s manual before you power it on to take note of any extra safety precautions, and keep your sauna blanket away from pets and children. When selecting your temperature, it’s recommended that beginners start with lower heat settings to ensure their safety; start at 100°F temperature setting and gradually build up to around 150 ℉ .

Exposure to electromagnetic field (EMF) from infrared light is another consideration; some consumer groups are cautious about EMF exposure. If you’re concerned about EMF exposure, opt for a sauna blanket marked low-EMF — many on this list fall in that category.

Infrared Sauna Blanket Benefits

Infrared technology and sauna blankets are still relatively new, so their benefits haven’t been widely studied just yet. Anecdotal evidence supports the notion that sauna blankets can support your health in the following ways:

  • Better circulation: “Infrared sauna improves nitric oxide production, which promotes vasodilation, allowing the blood vessels to dilate or expand as a result of the heat, which lowers blood pressure and allows for improved circulation,” explains Lucking. These circulation benefits can result in improved cardiac function, better vascular health, lowered oxidative stress markers, and reduced blood pressure levels.”
  • More radiant skin: “Sweating can help remove particulate matter and other soiling that builds up in the pores and on the skin,” Dr. Zeichner explains. On top of clearer pores, you may also experience a rosy flush glow similar to what you experience after a run (this likely boils down to the effects of better circulation). Just be sure to rinse off with warm water and a gentle cleanser afterwards to prevent breakouts, then follow up with a dry skin moisturizer .
  • Sounder sleep: “Beyond the active relaxation and stress reduction benefits which contribute to restful sleep, an infrared sauna in the evening may actually have a positive impact on our circadian rhythm, boost melatonin production, and improve thermoregulation as the body naturally cools down after the sauna session, all of which directly impact sleep quality,” says Lucking. Research supports a sauna blanket’s potential for better sleep, too: According to a 2019 survey published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, the majority of the 482 men and women polled perceived improvements in their sleep and stress levels with consistent sauna bathing. More data is necessary to support the claim, however sleep quality is an important marker for long-term health. So if a sauna blanket helps you get seven to eight hours of shut-eye, that’s a win.
  • Improved digestion: “Infrared sauna may be beneficial for digestion due to its general anti-inflammatory effects but likely more so due to the active relaxation it provides,” says Lucking. “When our body and nervous system are relaxed or in the parasympathetic state, this improves the function of our vagus nerve which connects the brain and the gut, and controls significant aspects of digestion as a result. This parasympathetic state also improves our digestive secretions like stomach acid, enzymes, as well as liver and bile flow which allows our digestive tract to function optimally.”

What to Look for in the Best Sauna Blankets

  • Materials: Due to their heating mechanisms, you’ll want to ensure the sauna blanket you choose is crafted with heat-safe and fireproof materials. Polyurethane leather is one of the most common materials you’ll find, however some luxury sauna blankets also include cotton or crystal layers that diffuse heat and make the experience more comfortable on a variety of surfaces.
  • Temperature range: The majority of infrared sauna blankets have a wide range of heat settings, with the majority falling somewhere between 70°F to 185°F. These allow you to customize your experience for a mild or more intense sweat session. Lucking suggests aiming for a temperature that allows for at least 15 minutes of significant sweating.
  • Heating zones: Some sauna blankets achieve a consistent temperature throughout the entirety of the device, where others have multiple heating zones that allow you to make small adjustments to the heat on certain parts of the body (i.e., if you’re looking to heat your legs more than your upper body to recover after a long run).
  • Portability: If you live in a small apartment or lack storage, you’ll want to consider the size and portability of the infrared sauna blanket you’re looking to buy. Most options are designed to be folded down once they’ve cooled between uses, however some have multiple layers of material that make them heavy and bulkier to store.

Sauna Blankets vs. Saunas

Accessibility is another key difference between traditional saunas and infrared sauna blankets. The most expensive sauna blanket on our list caps out at a cost of $700, and many on our list include a warranty and require minimal to no upkeep besides a regular cleaning (more on that below). At-home saunas, particularly outdoor saunas, are more of an investment, spanning from $2,000 for a one-person model and up to $9,000 for a two-person outdoor sauna. They also require careful maintenance, including watching out for proper ventilation to prevent mold build-up and regularly cleaning the walls, benches, and floor. On top of this, infrared sauna blankets can be folded up and stashed under the bed or in a closet when they’re not in using, catering to small space-dwellers.

Infrared Sauna Blanket FAQs

How do you use an infrared sauna blanket.

B eginners should start out by spending no more than 10 to 15 minutes in a sauna blanket , working up from a low temperature to one that feels steamy, but not suffocating. O nce you’re acclimated, you can stay zipped in for 20 to 30 minutes, or more if you can tolerate it without feeling lightheaded or dizzy. “Start slowly and observe how the body responds to both the duration and heat level of the infrared sauna blanket, particularly if you have not used other types of sauna therapy previously ,” Lucking recommends. Depending on your preference and schedule, it’s best to use a sauna blanket around three times a week to reap its full benefits . Before you tuck yourself inside, allow the blanket to pre-heat to your desired temperature. If you’re laying in your blanket for a longer session (30 minutes or more), keep ice water and a cold towel nearby to avoid overheating.

What should you wear in an infrared sauna blanket?

“It is very important to wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks while using an infrared sauna blanket which helps to prevent any discomfort or injury from the heat,” says Lucking. Exposing bare skin to an infrared sauna blanket can otherwise risk burns. We recommend a loose, breathable long-sleeved shirt or hoodie and sweatpants which will diffuse the direct heat.

Do infrared sauna blankets help you lose weight?

While you may feel lighter with regular use of a sauna blanket, you’re likely losing water weight versus body fat — so any weight loss you’re experiencing is temporary. And remember that losing too much water weight can increase your risk of dealing with severe dehydration, so don’t rely on excess sweating to see changes on the scale.

How do you clean an infrared sauna blanket?

Some sauna blankets come with machine-washable towel inserts that will absorb sweat during your session. If not, you’ll likely be left with a puddle of sweat after your sauna blanket session — first things first, wipe up any excess moisture with a dry towel. Then let the blanket cool completely before taking a gentle, non-toxic cleaner to the inside of the blanket. Let the blanket air-dry, then fold it up to store until the next use.

How We Tested and Selected the Best Sauna Blankets

Our article on the best sauna blankets began with in-depth interviews with two experts to learn the benefits of infrared sauna blankets and learn their tips for choosing the best tool for at-home use. The writer then conducted extensive research into the growing category of infrared sauna blankets, immersing herself in key features to look out for like low-EMF devices, safety features, and heat zones.

Using this knowledge, we drafted a shortlist of four bestselling infrared sauna blankets to try for a first round of testing for the article. A total of five testers, including three WWD Shop editors, conducted testing to contribute their unbiased thoughts and feedback on these infrared sauna blankets. Each sauna blanket was tested a minimum of six times over the course of one month to assess the durability, feel, and special features of each option. Our editors used the sauna blankets on each of their heat settings and on different surfaces, including on the couch, on a rug, and on hardwood floors to evaluate the comfort level. We took note of key design elements that contribute to the user experience, too, such as where the remote control is placed, if the blanket’s length suits tall people (our testers top off at 6-foot-4-inches tall), and how many heating zones the blanket has for more targeted heat therapy. Our testers also carefully assessed safety features during testing, ensuring that the options on our list are low-EMF, waterproof, fireproof, and have auto shut-off timers.

To provide authentic sauna blanket recommendations to our readers, our readers are currently testing more infrared sauna blankets from brands like MiHigh, Heat Healer, and Hydragun. We will update this article with our results.

My Dog Finally Stays Cool in the Heat Thanks to This $16 Blanket That I Take Everywhere

It packs into a compact carrying case for easy traveling

I bring my dog everywhere I can. Now that temperatures are rising and getting hotter each day, it’s important I’m prepared with everything I may need to keep him cool and comfortable at home and on the go.

PetSmart is one of my go-to retailers for dog supplies, and I just added the Arcadia Trail Water-Repellent Cooling Dog Blanket to my pet essentials. It’s been a major game-changer, and now that it's on sale for $16 with code SAVE20 , I keep recommending it for summer to all of my friends with pups. I truly wish I had gotten it sooner.

Ever since I got my dog, I noticed he struggles in the summer heat. He would do anything possible to avoid the sun and find shade. When I realized he often panted uncontrollably and preferred laying on the hard tile floor over his cushioned bed, I had to find a solution to make him more comfortable.

Since I introduced Arcadia Trail’s cooling dog blanket to him, it’s been his favorite spot to cool off. My favorite part is that it packs into a compact bag with handles I can bring anywhere we go. I’ve placed it on the ground in the park, across my couch, in my bedroom at night, and even in the back seat of my car.

The top features a cool-to-the-touch jersey fabric that’s incredibly smooth and soft on top of a thin filling for pillowy comfort. The back is made from a water-repellent sleeping bag-like fabric, ideal for placing over grass without worrying about stains. And even if the mat gets dirty, I can easily pop it in the wash, making it look new again.

One shopper with an older dog called the blanket “perfect for warmer weather,” adding that it’s their pet’s favorite place to plop down after coming in from outdoors. Another reviewer said it “packs up nicely,” making it ideal for hikes and picnics. It was a “lifesaver” for keeping a third customer’s dog cool when their house lost air conditioning for a week.

Grab the $16 travel blanket at PetSmart , and keep scrolling for more warm-weather finds to keep your dog cool this summer. Don't forget to use code SAVE20 at checkout for 20 percent off through May 16.
