HHS interactive map offers virtual tour of campus

map allows new staff, students to explore campus from afar

By Miya Liu , Sahil Venkatesan , and Allen Zhang | August 19, 2020

The first week of school is usually filled with a flurry of students getting to know their teachers and each other, all while trying to figure out where everything is located on campus. With school starting virtually this year, freshman and new staff members don’t even have the opportunity to get lost looking for the closest bathroom or making their way to the cafeteria.

The Epitaph created this virtual map to help you – all students and staff – get to know the campus a little bit better. With the new GSS building now in full swing and new construction already underway on the A Building, navigating campus is more confusing than ever.

Explore our campus virtually with this interactive map, which features photos, interviews with teachers, administrators and office staff, and descriptions of commonly visited places around campus.

Pro tip: clicking on the photos will expand them!

Junior High (7th-9th Grade)

The Homestead Junior High program embraces the creative power of the adolescent. To support this transitional period into adulthood, the Homestead offers a rich curriculum that centers on understanding oneself and one’s relationship with the world.

The opportunities for hands-on learning and community engagement multiply as students transition from the Glen Spey campus to the Hurleyville campus. The high school campus is located on Main Street in Hurleyville, NY a 35 minute drive from the Glen Spey Campus. A shuttle bus is available to transport students from the Glen Spey campus.

“… above all it is the education of adolescents that is important, because adolescence is the time when the child enters on the state of [adult]hood and becomes a member of society.” – Maria Montessori

Why Choose Montessori Junior High School?

The early adolescent years are a precarious and potentially powerful time, a time of metamorphosis when the individual sheds the identity of childhood and begins the transition into adulthood. The Homestead offers a close and caring environment where teens can focus on the important work of becoming well-rounded and empathetic adults. Close, supportive peer relationships develop quickly, and students find that they can take off their armor and express who they are in an environment free of bullying and constant status-seeking.

Their days are filled with friendship, collaboration, and meaningful service as we balance classroom time with real world application. Students work closely with experts in the various fields of study to gain first-hand experience and guidance as they begin to solidify the learning track that they will follow during the remainder of the junior and senior high years.

Because of the exceptional ratio of teachers to students, our junior high schoolers are given one-on-one nurturing as they develop organizational tools, test-taking strategies, and are taught how to effectively interact with adults and advocate for their interests, goals, and ideas. We place a high level of emphasis on individual development and nurturing the talents of each unique child.

Collaborative College Courses Begin in 9th Grade

Professors from neighboring SUNY Sullivan begin instruction at the Hurleyville Homestead campus beginning in 9th grade. During their 7th and 8th grade years students are already familiar with the SUNY campus through their use of the sports facilities and special programs. It is in 9th grade that students are eased into the pace and expectations of college course work. The Homestead teachers work closely with the SUNY faculty to support the students academically and organizationally.

Learning Through Service

Students are supported in finding multiple avenues for serving their community, both locally and globally. A multi-year business project fosters the creative and entrepreneurial spirit, with the goal of raising funds for a cause of the student’s choice. In permaculture, you might find them planting and tending perennial gardens or designing and building a sustainable geodesic dome structure. Through the inspiration of special guest speakers, trips off campus, and collaborative projects, junior high students have the experience of being effective agents of change in their world.

Embracing the Creative Power of the Adolescent

During these years, a healthy questioning of the status quo arises, and if supported constructively, can lead to a sense of self-worth, competence, and betterment of the world. If thwarted, it can lead to rebelliousness, apathy, and lost opportunity. To support students in this transitional period into adulthood, our junior high program integrates academics and an exploration of the world around us to create an educational experience that fosters purpose, vision, deep creativity, and the acquisition of the necessary skills to implement change.

homestead high school tour

Across the curriculum areas, students are challenged to apply their hearts, minds, and hands to solving problems they have identified. In the process, they come to know their own personal power and appreciate the abilities of others. Through our integrated curriculum and community service, the students create products and implement projects with real-world impact.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The Homestead School is a 501(c)(3) Montessori school focused on humanitarian and sustainable education with campuses located in Glen Spey and Hurleyville, New York.

Homestead High reaching out for assistance with college tour

Homestead High reaching out for assistance with college tour

Homestead Senior High School, under new principal Samuel J. Louis, is reaching out to the Homestead-South Dade community for assistance in funding a tour to five Florida colleges for 40 seniors.

The tour, which is scheduled for Mar. 19-21, includes the University of Florida, Santa Fe College (Alachua), Florida State, Florida A&M and the University of Central Florida and marks the first college tour in the school’s 45-year history.

“A college trip like this, as you can imagine, is a pivotal step to ensure that our students are equipped with the resources and information they need — and don’t have access to — to continue their educational journey,” Louis said. “With 90 percent of our graduating class being first generation college students — and the first in their lineage to pursue post-secondary education — we believe it is in the best interest of the entire community to support these outstanding young men and women, who have the GPA (grade point average) but are not able to pay out-of-pocket for a trip like this.”

Heading up the program for Homestead Senior is Michelle Conde, College and Career Club sponsor.

“Currently 95 percent of our current students qualify for free or reduced lunch and our school is unequivocally a home away from home for all of our students, especially the at-risk-youth we serve so dearly,” Conde said. “The goal of the trip is to expose our young adults to the many post-secondary options that Florida can offer them in order to encourage their success when applying to colleges. The long-term goal is that these students pay their success forward and bring it back to Homestead to continue enriching the community. Thus, this is a long-term investment for our community that will definitely pay dividends for everyone.”

Total cost for the three-day trip is nearly $13,000. So far the school — through chocolate bar sales and other activities — has raised approximately $5,500. This total includes a $1,000 donation from the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, one of South Florida’s most active community service organizations.

“We think it is important to support efforts like these,” said Kiwanis president Arnold Perez.

“This is not just an investment in these students but in the future of the Homestead-South Dade area. This is why we have chosen not only to support Homestead Senior High in this effort but are asking for the support of our fellow community service organizations and the entire community.”

According to Conde, “With the contribution of the community, the Homestead-South Dade area will be providing an opportunity our students only dreamed of. Donors will be reiterating the support, belief and faith our community has in our local students and help them inch one step closer to graduation, and, more importantly, the possibilities beyond.”

Tax-deductable donations to the Homestead Senior High School College and Career Club College Tour can be made by contacting Principal Louis at 786-920-5017 or Conde at 305-338-4233.
