Charity work abroad in Kenya

With volunteer program fees starting from $20 per day including accommodation, you will not find a more affordable and trustworthy charity work organization. But don’t just take our word for it, read these recent reviews from other IVHQ volunteers:

I felt very suited to the work I was doing, and left feeling very fulfilled. I felt that the locals who I was working with were appreciative of my time and effort. I could see how my physical presence and assistance was helping the community. I have learned so much about the world, people, different cultures and lifestyles and my horizons have definitely expanded. I returned home with a newly found sense of confidence in myself and a stronger sense of direction for my life. My trip with IVHQ transformed me and absolutely changed me for the better, I feel like I’ve become the person I want to be. Ella Capek, 21 (Volunteer in Kenya)
I recently returned from a great trip to Sri Lanka. It was everything I dreamed it would be. I was extremely lucky with my home stay and lived in the jungle next to the longest river in Sri Lanka. The family were extremely welcoming and took good care of me. The food was fantastic and the family did everything possible to keep us well fed. I chose to help in a disabled childcare center and because I am a therapist I was able to do physiotherapy with the babies and small children. I was so happy with the project I stayed the entire 3 weeks. All in all I had a wonderful, and sometimes challenging experience. As a mature volunteer I felt prepared for whatever experiences life brought up and I was well prepared and well travelled. I would recommend this type of trip to anyone who wants to travel alone. Ruth Cartwright, 62 (Volunteer in Sri Lanka)
My experience in Ecuador was great and it exceeded all my expectations. Volunteering opened my mind to several things and changed my perspective about many subjects. The help we gave to the children was very valuable, and I feel the connections we made with them really made a difference. Juan Hurtado, 19 (Volunteer in Ecuador)

“GIVE changed my entire life. From the very first day of reaching the island of Zanzibar, I saw the world in a different light. The cliche expectations of serving others and volunteering were achieved but I had no idea that I would experience the best 2 weeks of my life. Giving is a lot more than monetary handouts. If you want to change the world, go and get your hands a little dirty. But trust me when I say that the locals will help you more than you could ever help them. Don’t sit and wonder what it’s like or ask others what it’s like. Go. Go and give your time and effort with the best organization you could find.” – Chase, Tanzania.

GIVE has offered me the chance to grow as a person and help others who I believe are deserving of every possible opportunity I have, and they have given me more than I thought I would receive. They have given me a new family, a new home, and a new mission and passion in life… I have learned more about myself and who I am. You get to meet locals and natives of Hawai’i and learn their stories and ancestry lineage and work with them in helping with bringing back their culture. Wither by helping on sustainable farms or cleaning up on beach sides, you get to become connected to the land and the people you’re helping. You also get to meet new people from around the world and hear about why they are also there to help and what their own stories are as well. I honestly did not think I could learn as much as I did within one week, and the course was a perfect balance of learning and fun. Not only did we get to learn in the classroom, but we would venture out into the Cascade Mountains and do real-time Wilderness First Aid scenarios, which solidified our knowledge of the topics we discussed. The lodge staff was so kind and went above and beyond to ensure we had a comfortable stay, and the fellow students I met during the course were awesome and we have stayed in-touch with one another since! and why we do what we do

  • Our Mission & Methodology

GIVE’s Mission:  To inspire growth, empower global citizens,  and ignite sustainable change worldwide .

Give’s promise: people, projects & principles above profit.

With over 10 million people volunteering abroad each year and more than a  thousand different organizations offering volunteer programs abroad, it’s no surprise that one of the most common questions we hear is, “What makes GIVE different?”  In fact, it was  this very question that inspired GIVE’s founding in 2011.  After  witnessing the good, the bad and the downright ugly sides of the volunteer  tourism industry, we ultimately determined that there is real potential for international volunteers to have positive impacts in lower-income countries, but it would require a fresh, focused approach to truly foster sustainable change. That’s why we’ve made  a   lasting commitment to put  people, projects and principles above profit.   SEE MORE

GIVE’s Family: Happy People Sail Fast

This principle is clearly manifested in both our host community members and volunteers, and it all starts with our unrivaled team of staff. The GIVE family is a concept we’ve fostered since day one, as we’ve established a clear pipeline for international staff to learn and grow over several years of experience in the field. All of our international staff started as GIVE volunteers, gained necessary certifications and skill sets during GIVE’s WILD course, went on to increase their involvement as in-country interns, and are now facilitating an unparalleled volunteer experience as GIVE Guides and Project Coordinators. We are also proud to employ local Guides and Project Coordinators in each of our destinations, who act as a critical link between our volunteers and the communities we empower. These are truly some of the most passionate, responsible and inspiring human beings on the planet! SEE MORE.

Our values at work

We are committed to providing a diverse, inclusive, equal and safe work environment for all of our employees and the communities we work with. Our culture is shaped by our values, which reinforce what we care about and how we do things, not just what we do. Our main core values:  Empowerment, Inclusiveness and Accountability, drive everything we do.

As we strive to achieve Oxfam’s goals to end poverty, we try and lead by example in demonstrating the same values that we wish to see in the people we work with and those we aim to influence.

Our safeguarding commitment

Oxfam is committed to preventing any type of unwanted behavior at work including sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse, lack of integrity and financial misconduct; and committed to promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults. Oxfam expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment through our code of conduct. We place a high priority on ensuring that only those who share and prove our values are recruited to work for us.

Can you get paid for volunteer work?

Don’t let it weigh on your conscience—the words paid and volunteer CAN actually be placed side-by-side and be just as charitable as the unpaid variation. Paid international volunteer work is no myth, and although it usually requires a bit more work in finding, it will most certainly pay off in the end (both literally and figuratively).

Tired of scavenging the internet up through the 50th page of your search engine’s “Paid Volunteer Work” results with nothing but disappointment? There are plenty of deceptive volunteer abroad programs with hidden fees masking over a handful of legit paid volunteer jobs.

To make everyone’s life easier, we’re highlighting some genuine and inspiring avenues to help become an ace paid volunteer abroad, so you can set out to do some good without the financial hardships. Close your 45345 open tabs and read on for resources to find paid volunteer work overseas!

The road to finding paid volunteer work probably isn’t paved, but you’re excited to travel down it anyway.

Paid volunteer work FAQs

What is “paid volunteer work”.

Why do so many volunteer projects require a fee, if you’re doing a service by helping out? Many programs out there do ask for a modest program cost or at least enough to cover your room and board. It’s worth noting that this is not a ploy to cheat willing participants out of some hard earned cash, nor is it a money making machine (if you’re working with a legitimate organization).

There is definitely good reason why you should pay volunteer abroad , including covering unavoidable costs to be able to allocate more resources to the target cause. However, not everyone has the means to afford some good ol’ philanthropy along with an international flight, and this is where the magic of paid international volunteer work comes in.

To answer the question “ Do you get paid for volunteer work? ”, it’s a matter of how you view compensation. Reimbursement for your services as a paid volunteer abroad can cover a full spectrum of associated costs, such as accommodations, meals, monetary payment, and flight stipends. Whether it’s straight up receiving cash in the hand or a meal every day, paid volunteers can expect to receive some aspect of their personal cost covered without providing payment in return to participate in the volunteer experience.

[ Get matched with paid volunteer jobs abroad for FREE ]

Can you actually find paid volunteer jobs.

Yes. It’s very real. Paid community service isn't necessarily the norm, but it is out there if you're willing to work to find it.

What does paid international volunteer work look like?

Being on the receiving side of the volunteer spectrum, rather than the fee giving side, means that application competition is heightened and specialized skills may be a requirement.

Applications for large, competitive programs for paid volunteer work abroad for adults can be due several months to a year in advance, so you better have an insanely organized life plan! Because funds to support volunteers are limited, these organizations have to be very selective on which applicants they choose. This can also be your chance to finally use that college degree or put your medical license to good, global use. Depending on the program, you may need to have these professional credentials to even qualify. But hey, at least you won’t have to pay to volunteer abroad, right?

HOWEVER, not all paid volunteer jobs are credential doom and competitive gloom! It’s also a possibility to do paid volunteering abroad in much less competitive, short-term programs that work directly with project coordinators. Volunteering on a farm, for example, is a great option for a few week stay, compensates with full room and board, and may not require any previous experience.

You’re packed up and ready to dedicated your life to service (preferably, paid volunteer service).

Where can you get paid to volunteer?

Similar to unpaid volunteer programs, paid volunteer jobs are more common in regions of the world with emerging economies and a demand on financial and physical aid to boost community development efforts. Traditionally popular tourist destinations like Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand are more likely to offer short job stints instead of longer term volunteer opportunities.

When it comes to the type of organization that facilitates paid volunteer jobs, you can almost certainly bet your bottom dollar that government- or large NGO-sponsored programs will have the means to offer reimbursement of some kind. These types of organizations have many more financial resources to pull from and often run long established programs, such as the Peace Corps or United Nations Volunteer.. Seeking out volunteer opportunities with similarly prominent foundations will save you a ton of time and guess work. You can stop asking “do you get paid for volunteer work” and start asking the important questions, like “what kind of work will I do?”.

Many smaller businesses offering volunteer programs abroad simply don’t have the same funds to grant participants the same assistance. This is usually where the fees paid by the volunteers themselves make the program possible!

Interview: One woman explains her paid volunteer work

Niki Kraska has spent the past few years doing international volunteer work in India after finding the perfect paid volunteer program.

Name: Niki Kraska Started Volunteering: 2014 Organization: Reaching Hand Location: near Bangalore, India Type of Paid Volunteer Work: Coordinator, caregiver, and educator at a home for orphaned and underprivileged children

Q: How did you decide on this organization for paid volunteering abroad?

A: I first came to volunteer with Reaching Hand in Nov 2014. A friend of mine was coming to volunteer through the placement organization Leave UR Mark and encouraged me to come with her. Leave Ur Mark connected us to Reaching Hand, where I first taught dance at the Home and worked on fundraising and events in the office. I've returned to Reaching Hand every year since, last year completing a six month volunteer placement with them. This is the first year I have come for a full-time, year-long commitment.

Q: In what form do you get paid for volunteer work?

A: Since I live on campus at the home, my housing and meals are provided. I get a monthly stipend to help pay for local travel expenses and necessities.

Q: Was the compensation for the volunteer work an influencing factor in choosing this organization?

A: The fact that I am able to feel secure in my housing, meals, and basic needs is a huge factor in being able to commit as a full-time volunteer. I am unable to make an income in any other way right now due to the amount of time and energy I am putting into my work here, so I wouldn't be able to survive if I wasn't getting some sort of financial support from the organization.

I wouldn't say it was THE deciding factor; I'm sure if my heart was leading me here I would have found SOME way to make it work. But that's because I already have a relationship with this NGO, children, and staff, and I knew for sure I wanted to come back. If it was my first experience with an organization, I wouldn't be comfortable making that big of a commitment on my own money.

Paid volunteering abroad: Not a pipe dream, but a possible reality—could it be yours?

construction in uganda

These resources will help you build your life as an international volunteer, so you can help with building projects abroad!

You can get funded to volunteer abroad, but it’s important to remember that paid volunteer work isn’t strictly a job abroad. You shouldn’t expect to get paid a grandiose sum in cash for your time and labor. Many programs will pay in the form of room and board, or a modest stipend to relieve the burden of financial barriers and allow many more people to lend a hand. The purpose of volunteering is to selflessly work toward a humanitarian or ecological goal, building a sustainable future for people and the environment.

If you’re certain volunteering lies in your cards, then explore every resource to…

Imagine spending your days guiding fellow travel lovers through a bustling European metropolis, or perhaps a small village is more your style. Wherever you want to go, popular travel destinations always need friendly, knowledgeable guides to lead tourists through city sights and cultural excursions.

This International Living article offers tips and inside knowledge for aspiring international tour guides.

13. Massage therapist

If you want to visit popular tourist destinations, you should consider gaining skills in massage therapy. You can work for hotel chains, spas, cruise lines or become self-employed.

Licensed massage therapists are always welcomed to soothe and de-stress travelers and locals alike. Although you may start at rookie rates, you can consistently raise them as your clientele and skills grow. Plus, massage therapists generally have a flexible schedule to work full or part time.

The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) can help you find training programs, business tools and even discounts on supplies.

14. Peace Corps volunteer

As the title "volunteer" might indicate, you won't exactly be making six figures working with the Peace Corps. But if you don't mind living on a budget, you can become part of a worthwhile organization that lets you travel the world and make a difference in others' lives at the same time.

Assignments typically last two years and involve advancing education, healthcare, and economic and agricultural development in a community abroad. The Peace Corps also provides housing and health benefits, not to mention an excellent resume talking point .

15. Photographer

Source: Rawpixel / Getty Images

If you're skilled with a camera, consider becoming a travel photographer. While news organizations such as the Associated Press need staff photographers, you can also make a living by freelancing .

Travel photographers are needed at a variety of locations, including tourist attractions, local events and high-end resorts. Begin your journey by following the steps at Worldpackers or taking a Skillshare course .

16. Retail buyer

For the fashionista with wanderlust, a career in retail purchasing might be the ultimate dream job. In addition to monitoring in-store inventory, retail buyers attend vendor meetings, trade shows and conferences across the country – or even the globe, depending on where the company sources its products. The employee in this position identifies industry and consumer trends, and decides what products the company should sell.

Of course, it's not just clothing stores that hire purchasing agents; most large retail companies employ buyers to help them select and negotiate merchandise deals across various categories.

17. Scuba diving instructor

There is a whole other world beneath the ocean's surface, and you can live it by traveling and teaching the essentials of diving.

Scuba instructors have the opportunity to see parts of the globe that are often hidden. A great way to get started is with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) , which offers training courses and diving guides.

18. Ski instructor

Source: fisher_photostudio / Getty Images

If you love snow sports and traveling, consider combining your passions to become a ski instructor. There are openings at ski resorts worldwide, including in the United States, France, Switzerland and Canada.

You can look for other seasonal work when the ski season ends; many places stay open throughout the warmer weather for outdoor activities and still need staff. Begin your search for ski instructor jobs at the Season Workers website.

19. Stagehand/roadie

Theater productions and musicians go on tour all the time – and they take busloads of roadies and stagehands with them. While theaters and venues may have their own stagehands, some still travel with each act.

You can begin your search for stagehand jobs on the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) website by finding your local union.

20. Translator

Are you fluent in multiple languages? If so, you could become a translator and travel the world, helping people communicate. Translators must speak at least two languages.

According to Day Translations , other useful expertise includes computer and business skills. While becoming a translator requires education, the job can offer the chance to visit many countries.

The countries with the most language service providers (LSPs) include the United States, Great Britain, France, China, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

FYI: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for translators is expected to increase by 24% between 2020 and 2030.

21. Travel agent

Source: LightFieldStudios / Getty Images

Some people may think that the professional travel agent is a dead career in the age of Google searches and travel price comparison websites. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a slow growth rate in this occupation over the next decade, it's still a rewarding job for anyone who loves to travel.

Travel agents often visit popular destinations to get firsthand experience of the resorts and restaurants they recommend to offer honest, helpful advice to clientele. Whether your clients are business or leisure travelers, they'll thank you for your insider insight into local sights and activities.

Plus, travel agents can increase their income by starting a YouTube channel, writing a blog, and building relationships with travel products and related brands.

Tip: The five highest-paying travel agent jobs are tour consultant, travel sales consultant, vacation sales advisor, corporate travel agent and reservation clerk, according to ZipRecruiter .

22. Traveling nurse

Traveling nurses move around the country from hospital to hospital, bouncing from one temporary position to the next. You'll be sent to areas where nurses are needed most, and your housing, travel expenses and benefits are often covered .

As with any nursing position, you'll need credentials from a nursing program to become a registered nurse. Visit TravelNursing.org for more information.

23. Travel writer

Source: grinvalds / Getty Images

It might not be the easiest way to make a living, but if you've got a knack for writing you can share your knowledge about popular travel destinations. Though full-time travel writing positions exist, most of the work you would get is freelance, as publications typically want individuals who can submit firsthand accounts of the location they're writing about. You can search for and bid on freelance travel writing assignments on sites like Freelancer.com and Upwork .

You can also supplement your income by starting a YouTube channel or social media account like Instagram. Providing your travel-hungry fans with visuals can help you connect with your audience, and even build an email list to promote travel services or other products.

24. Truck driver

Long-haul trucking is an ideal job for those who prefer the open road to an office cubicle. Because of the extended time you'll spend driving solo, it's also a great career option for introverts.

You'll need to obtain a commercial driver's license to start working in this field, but once you have it, you'll be able to see the country as you deliver shipments from one destination to the next.

25. Virtual assistant

As many companies move their business online and employ remote workers, virtual assistants are in high demand.

Becoming a virtual assistant is enticing because the job can offer a flexible schedule in various niche markets. Workers might even have multiple clients, which will increase spontaneity – and income – in their lives.

Did you know? Hiring a virtual assistant can decrease a company's costs by 78%, because the position only requires the company to provide an hourly rate, not office space, equipment, or benefits. Plus, if you have work experience, you may not need a college degree to snag a VA career.

Virtual assistants can do an assortment of activities, including proofreading articles, providing content or social media strategy, and offering customer support. Some virtual assistants keep their clients organized by making appointments or travel arrangements, and even doing personal shopping.

Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) Senior Officer

Cities Alliance, which is hosted by UNOPS, is a global partnership promoting the role of cities in poverty reduction and sustainable development. Managed by a Secretariat based in Brussels, it is a unique partnership with a diverse membership that has come together to strengthen both impacts and coherence in urban development. Cities Alliance is a global leader with a strong track record in grant-making, which supports strategic city planning, slum upgrading strategies, and national policies designed to make cities more inclusive and sustainable. Through UNOPS, the Cities Alliance operates a Multi-Donor Fund supported by an efficient, flexible grant-making mechanism with global reach.

As per its Charter, the main objective of the Cities Alliance is to reduce urban poverty and promote the role of cities in sustainable development. To assess the extent to which its efforts and those of partners are making progress toward that objective, the Cities Alliance monitors, evaluates, and publicly reports its activities within an agreed-upon corporate results framework and through a dedicated result-based management system. The Cities Alliance is also strengthening its learning systems and approaches and integrating learning into the project cycle and Monitoring and Evaluation.

Project Information

Starting in 2024 for a period of 48 months, Cities Alliance (UNOPS) will be responsible for the indirect management of the “Sustainable Urban Integration of Displacement-Affected Communities” (SUIDAC) in Sub-Saharan African cities – financed by the European Union. The Action will address the nexus between forced displacement and urban development in five Sub-Saharan countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, and Uganda.

The Action aims to:

Improve social cohesion and self-reliance of Displacement-Affected Communities (DACs) in urban and peri-urban areas and expand legal protection (e.g., access to rights, documentation), with specific attention to forcibly displaced populations (refugees, returnees, and IDPs) and including persons with specific needs.

Strengthen local authorities’ capacities to adopt integrated approaches to forced displacement management in urban contexts and promote political and evidence-based policy dialogue at regional, national, and local levels to improve policy frameworks and influence future policy discussions on urban forced displacement.

The Action target beneficiaries are Displacement-Affected Communities (DACs), as well as their hosting cities. Cities are a new environment for the implementation of EU financed forced displacement programs. SUIDAC will be the first urban displacement program financed through the 'Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument – Global Europe' ('NDICI-Global Europe') in the SSA region.

The Action builds on and expands the EU Trust Fund program “CRRF: Inclusive Urban Development and Mobility” ending in 2023. Ukraine-Russia war latest: Putin picks ex-bodyguard for senior role - fuelling succession rumours

The Russian president has brought Alexei Dyumin, 51, closer to the centre of power since his re-election in March. Meanwhile, the leaders of France and Germany have said Ukraine should be allowed to strike targets in Russia - but on certain conditions.

  • The big picture : What you need to know about the war right now
  • Eyewitness: Russia producing shells three times faster than Ukraine's allies

We're pausing our live coverage of the conflict for the day, but if you're just joining us, here is a recap of the key moments.

  • Vladimir Putin appointed Alexei Dyumin, his former bodyguard, as secretary of the advisory State Council, fuelling speculation about his presidential potential;
  • France and Germany's leaders said Ukraine should be allowed to hit military sites inside Russia from which missiles were being fired at Ukrainian territory, but not other targets;
  • Police searched the office of a European Parliament employee in Brussels over suspected Russian interference;
  • Prisoner of war exchanges between Russia and Ukraine have been suspended for several months, Russia's human rights commissioner said.

A Russian airstrike has hit more than 100 houses in an eastern Ukrainian village, local authorities say.

The high-explosive aerial bomb wounded seven people in the Donetsk region, according to the Ukrainian National Police.

The attack took place seven miles from Kramatorsk, a key Ukrainian-held city.

A four-year-old child was among those injured.

Vladimir Putin has appointed Alexei Dyumin, his former bodyguard, as secretary of the advisory State Council, fuelling speculation about his presidential potential.

The president has brought Mr Dyumin, 51, closer to the centre of power since his re-election in March, having made him an aide overseeing the defence industry this month.

The details of his new role are unknown.

"Russia's elite is abuzz with the appointment of Dyumin," Sergei Markov, a former Kremlin adviser and Putin supporter, said on Telegram.

"This is seen as confirmation that Dyumin is the future president of Russia, Putin's choice," Mr Markov said, adding that this was something that had long been rumoured.

There is no public debate or reliable information about who might eventually succeed Putin, who is 71 and is expected to rule for years, but his appointments are scrutinised for signs of whether he is lining up a potential candidate to one day take over from him.

Being publicly identified as a potential successor carries certain risks attached to being seen as a challenger.

Asked about Dyumin's appointment, the Kremlin said it was part of a rotation - he is taking over the role from Igor Levitin, 72 - and said he would look at how the State Council would function.

A German government spokesperson says agreements on how Ukraine deploys weapons supplied by the West are confidential.

They batted away questions on whether Ukrainian forces could use them to strike into Russian territory.

The government was pressed on the issue at a news conference after French and German leaders said Kyiv should be allowed to hit military sites inside Russia from which missiles were being fired at Ukrainian territory.

Yesterday, Vladimir Putin tried to frame his invasion across the Kharkiv border, opening up a second front, as a result of the West failing to prevent Kyiv from attacking Russian targets.

Ukrainian drones have the capability of striking a target up to 1,550 miles away, but Moscow has been protected, a senior Russian airforce official has said.

The comments, made by Dmitry Bogdanov, head of the radio-electronic warfare department of the Russian Aerospace Forces, suggest a wide swath of Russian territory bordering Ukraine is vulnerable to attack.

"The enemy is not standing still," Mr Bogdanov was quoted as saying by state news agency Tass.

"Now unmanned aerial vehicles can traverse an area of up to 2,500 kilometres, and many [Russian] regions are aware of this."

It comes after a Kyiv source told Reuters on Monday that a Ukrainian drone had attempted its deepest strike yet, targeting a Russian early-warning military radar system in the Orenburg region, almost 1,000 miles away.

Since the start of the year, drone attacks have also struck critical oil refining infrastructure in Russia.

Ukraine does not officially confirm or deny it is attacking refineries inside Russia, but it says such sites are legitimate targets as they aid Moscow's military effort.

A major barrage in May last year saw two drones fly towards the Kremlin complex overlooking Red Square before they were destroyed.

Police have searched the office of a European Parliament employee in Brussels over suspected Russian interference, Belgium's federal prosecutor's office says.

Officers also raided the employee's residence and the EU Parliament's French headquarters.

It comes after an investigation was launched last month by the Belgian prime minister, who said his intelligence service uncovered a network trying to undermine support for Ukraine.

"The searches are part of a case of interference, passive corruption and membership of a criminal organisation and relates to indications of Russian interference, whereby members of the European Parliament were approached and paid to promote Russian propaganda via the Voice of Europe news website," prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said they believe the employee played "a significant role in this".

This comes less than two weeks before polls open on 6-9 June to elect a new EU parliament.

"According to our intelligence service, the objectives of Moscow are very clear," said Belgian leader Alexander De Croo.

"The objective is to help elect more pro-Russian candidates to the European Parliament and to reinforce a certain pro-Russian narrative in that institution."

The Swedish government will donate military aid to Ukraine worth £960m.

It is the largest package of the 16 Sweden has agreed to so far.

"It consists of equipment that is at the top of Ukraine's priority list," deputy prime minister Ebba Busch said.

This includes air defence, artillery ammunition and armoured vehicles.

Sweden's defence minister Pal Jonsson said the country has ruled out sending any Swedish-built JAS 39 Gripen jets for now, saying Ukrainian is focusing on implementing the F-16 programme.

Several countries have said they want to donate F-16s, with Belgium pledging 30 yesterday.

Mr Jonsson said Sweden "is still working on possibly being able to contribute with the Gripen system later."

Prisoner of war exchanges between Russia and Ukraine have been suspended for several months, Russia's human rights commissioner says.

Tatyana Moskalova blamed what she called Kyiv's "false demands", the state news agency Tass reported.

It was unclear precisely when swaps ceased. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Moscow and Kyiv have carried out periodic prisoner swaps via intermediaries since Moscow launched its invasion.

Outside Kyiv, manufacturers have been demonstrating their answer to the challenge of rescuing injured soldiers from the battlefield.

Several remote-controlled stretchers were being tested in these pictures taken by Reuters at an undisclosed location.

Russian guided bombs killed two civilians in the eastern Ukrainian city of Toretsk yesterday, Donetsk's regional governor has said.

They heavily damaged two multistorey apartment buildings, said Vadym Filashkin.

Mr Filashkin said Russian forces attacked the city with three bombs, located north of Russian-held Donetsk.

Rescue teams were on site to determine the extent of casualties.
