Interpol | Spoon: Lights, Camera, Factions Tour 2022 [Concert Review]

Brian Q. Newcomb | November 21, 2022 September 8, 2022 | Concert Reviews

Interpol | Spoon w/ Seratones; Lights, Camera, Factions Tour :  KEMBA Live!; Columbus, OH; Tuesday, August 30, 2022

Tuesday evening’s outdoor concert was not only a great way to end the summer concert season, but it was a case study in two very different approaches to live music performance from two very different bands. The co-headline bill started off with Spoon, originally from Austin, TX, led by vocalist and front-man Britt Daniel, who has embraced the traditional songwriting model with influences going back to classic rock and pop. Interpol came out of the NYC post-punk scene, developing their sound around the sonic interactions of bass, drums, and guitars as a propulsive unit.

Playing first, Daniel and his Spoon mates revealed their true colors right out of the gate, opening with “The Beast and Dragon, Adored,” which not only kicked things off with an energetic, good feeling rock groove, but repeatedly celebrating the idea that “when you believe, they call it rock & roll.” And if that title didn’t throw you, they kept that fun feeling going with “Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine,” which was lighter than the title leads you to believe, with Daniel emphasizing the “Oh yeah!” at the end of the verses.

Of course, a great front-man and vocalist like Daniel would look and sound foolish with the substantial backing of a great band, and Spoon is that. Drummer Jim Eno, the band’s other original member, started kicking out the punchy rhythm of “Got Nuffin,” followed quickly by guitarist Gerardo Larios, whose herkie jerky moves at the edge of the stage charged up the fans down front. Larios dove right into the opening chords of “Do You,” joined on harmonies by Alex Fischel on keyboards and bassist Ben Trokan, giving the hooky pop chorus plenty of punch. Both Larios and Fischel move back and forth from guitar and keyboards, depending on what a song requires, and both were on guitar with Daniel for the dynamic delivery of “The Fitted Shirt,” Larios still manifesting manic movements whether beating out the song’s rhythm or grinding out a solo. Both moved back on keys for “The Way We Get By,” another great pop song with a light funk and R&B feel, which led into “My Mathematical Friend” which built around the driving rhythm section of Eno and Trokan. Larios played a spooky synth solo, and Daniel added a bit of lead guitar as the song reached its climax, and that final word, “stop!”

Daniel moved to an acoustic guitar for the verses of “The Underdog,” with Larios again going a bit crazy on the keys. “My Babe,” a fun pop song and the latest single from the band’s 2022 release Lucifer on the Sofa , built from the synth intro and piano from Larios and Daniel’s acoustic rhythm, serving up the song’s hooky chorus, rocking a bit harder than the album version, with a guitar solo from Fischel. Daniel led into “I Summon You,” playing the song’s swinging acoustic rhythm, encouraging the crowd to clap along in an effort the help lift the “weight of the world.” Returning to the band’s trademark high energy rock & roll, they returned to electrics for the driving punch of “Jonathon Fisk.”

Finally getting around the title track of their newest album, they opened the song with Larios on piano, Daniel singing while the rest of the band took a brief break, only to return a couple verses in to add big bass notes as drums, guitars and bass began to build as they segued into “Isolation,” a cover of John Lennon’s solo composition, an appropriate choice given Lucifer on the Sofa’s pandemic shut-down vibe.

Staying with the newer material, “The Hardest Cut” cut a wide swath with its big guitar swagger, bordering on a metal riff, with a smoking guitar solo from Fischel. But Spoon can deliver a bold rock groove with strong R&B flavor without relying on guitars, as Larios and Fischel returned to their keyboards for “Inside Out,” the two trading synthesizer solo lines back and forth at the song’s tale end, with Daniel leading the audience in clapping along before leaving the stage briefly. The bass and drums kicked into the deep groove of “I Turn My Camera On,” with Eno digging into a fun drum solo break, cued by the lyric “hit me like a tom,” adding to the song’s strong dance vibe.

They followed that up with the power pop of “Don’t You Evah,” a song written by the NYC band The Natural History,” that Spoon had covered on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga , to which Larios added a squealing, effect driven guitar solo. The followed the fast, guitar riff driven “Wild,” another from the newest album, that rocked hard and steady, Daniel egging on the audience. Daniel has a great rock voice and with his natural good looks, fitted white shirt, and engaging presence interacted freely with fans, applauding someone down front who was waving Spoon’s latest vinyl album. Thanking the crowd for coming out, the vocalists praised Columbus as “one of the great rock cities in the world,” while Eno snapped his snare for the intro for the set closing “Rent I Pay,” with it’s Stone’s vibe energy, Fischel trading back and forth from Hammond organ sounds to crunchy guitar lead riffs. As Spoon played the sun had set in the west, but even without a spotlight, the stage lighting was bright and the band personally engaging as they waved and left for the night.

Interpol, coming out of the NYC scene and influenced largely by European post-punk bands like Joy Division and Echo & the Bunnymen, take a very different approach than the poppier, songwriting focus of Spoon. Playing their entire set backlit, thus predominately in shadows, the five-person live band leans toward heavier, darker tones. Opening with the quieter keyboard opening of “Toni,” the first track from their 2022 release, The Other Side of Make-Believe , the music builds around the throbbing basslines played by touring bassist Brad Truax, and auxiliary keyboard player Brandon Curtis. Reaching back to their 2004 album, Antics , the bass intro to “Evil,” drew applause from fans, who joined singer and rhythm guitarist Paul Banks in singing the song’s catchy chorus. Much of the set followed this simple formula, “Fables” and “Narc” both opening with a guitar or bass intro, the band settling into the songs’ steady groove, often punctuated artfully by drummer Sam Fogarino, while guitarist Daniel Kessler and Curtis on keys bring texture and color as the propulsive beat builds toward a cathartic vocal chorus. On “Narc” there’s a modified reggae rhythmic feel, while on “Obstacle 1” there’s a bolder rock beat, with a room for a punchy drum break.

As lead vocalist, Banks sounds most comfortable on the louder, sing-songy melodies of the song’s choruses, but was pitchy and tentative in the quieter sections of “Pioneer of the Falls” with its brittle, tense rhythms and “Mr. Credit,” another from the new album. Things worked to the band’s benefit playing more familiar songs, like “All the Rage Back Home,” from 2014’s El Pintor , which thrives around its punk energy, fast, kicking rhythm that earned a strong chant along response from the crowd, and the steady, sturdy throb of “Rest My Chemistry. Kessler played the opening eight notes repetitively to kick off the trance-like “The Rover,” while Banks’ struggled with the vocals in the newer “Gran Hotel,” which ended with brief guitar solos. After “The New,” Interpol closed their 75-minute set with two more familiar songs from “ Antic ,” the throbbing clap-along “Not Even Jail,” and the bold, fast “Slow Hands,” which had long time fans singing and chanting along.

While the original advertised opener for the “Lights, Camera, Factions” tour was the now broken up Goon Sax from Australia, and then NYC duo Water from Your Eyes, a band from the nightclub on the corner, Seratones actually filled in at the last minute. While female singer AJ Haynes won extra credit for opening with a cover of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” which fit the late afternoon sun of this end of summer show, well, perfectly. Otherwise, she and another member of the band played unrecognizable folk rock, quoted some entertaining feminist poetry and did her best to entertain a crowd who was killing time waiting for the show’s main attractions.

Interpol and Spoon Announce Co-Headlining Tour

The Goon Sax open in a Matador triple bill

Interpol and Spoon Announce Co-Headlining Tour

Indie rock veterans Interpol and Spoon are going on tour together this summer.

The “Lights, Camera, Factions Tour” begins on August 25th in Asbury Park, New Jersey and wraps up with two shows at Portland’s Pioneer Square on September 17th and 18th. The Goon Sax are set to open every show, save for a stop in Toronto, where Metric will play instead. The three week run hits some pretty random places — Providence, Rhode Island and two dates in Ohio stick out — which is probably because both Interpol and Spoon have more extensive headlining tours of their own kicking off in April. Alas, it’s a great bill for those lucky enough to be in the bands’ path.

Tickets go on sale Friday, April 1st via Ticketmaster .

Interpol — who recently wrapped up recording their 7th studio album with producers Flood and Moulder — begin their own headlining tour April 25th. Tickets are available here .

Spoon released their great new album Lucifer on the Sofa   back in February, then followed it up with an EP called Wild   that features a remix by Jack Antonoff. Their headlining tour begins April 8th in New Haven, Connecticut, and you can get tickets here .

Interpol and Spoon Announce Co-Headlining Tour

The post Interpol and Spoon Announce Co-Headlining Tour appeared first on Consequence .

Indie rock veterans Interpol and Spoon are going on tour together this summer.

The “Lights, Camera, Factions” Tour begins on August 25th in Asbury Park, New Jersey and wraps up with two shows at Portland’s Pioneer Square on September 17th and 18th.

Interpol bores, Spoon sparkles at uneven N.J. tour kickoff | review

  • Published: Aug. 26, 2022, 11:38 a.m.

Interpol Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Interpol performed on 8/25/2022 at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

  • Bobby Olivier | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Less than a week ago, Interpol celebrated the 20th anniversary of the band’s seminal debut album, “Turn On the Bright Lights,” a stark and biting flag-bearer of early ‘00s post-punk revival.

Named Pitchfork’s album of the year in 2002, the LP was instrumental in sustaining visibility for the burgeoning scene, largely based in New York, where bands like The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were also just coming on to the national stage. As famously portrayed in Lizzy Goodman’s “Meet Me in the Bathroom” oral history book, the Manhattan community was vibrant and impassioned, with Interpol honing its sound — drawing heavy influence from melancholic forefathers Joy Division and The Smiths — at the legendary Lower East Side haunt the Luna Lounge, jamming beside The Strokes, The National, TV on the Radio and many others. The Killers wouldn’t blast the genre skyward for another two years — and might have never soared without the intrigue surrounding Interpol and its cohort.

Two decades later, the trio of Paul Banks, Daniel Kessler and Samuel Fogarino has carved a successful career around their siren-like sound, earning generally warm critical receptions across seven LPs and filling venues with millennials clinging to the enduring tracks.

Interpol Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Enter the band’s latest 20-date tour, which kicked off Thursday night at a crowded Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park. The roadshow, titled the “Lights, Camera, Factions tour” is technically a co-headlining bill with Austin indie-rock stalwarts Spoon , though Interpol closed the show and it was clear Thursday most of the audience was there for them.

The band, which travels as a five-piece with touring bassist and keyboardist, delivered a visually striking 70-minute set, heavily backlit with dramatic strobes, torrents of fog and three low-lying disco balls to largely obscure the band, casting them in silhouette for much of the performance.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bobby Olivier (@bobbyolivier)

This was fine enough, as there wasn’t much to see. The ding against Interpol is that while they’ve clearly mastered (if not singularly defined) the modern post-punk aesthetic, their catalog lacks dimension — a great deal of their songbook, including July’s serviceable new record “The Other Side of Make-Believe,” does indeed sound like a facsimile of “Bright Lights.” One card, played over and over.

Such stasis might’ve been less overt Thursday if the band had better engaged the crowd of about 3,000, or offered a more energetic stage show. But that’s just not their style: They wear their tailored black suits, they stand there and play their songs; blank stoicism masquerading as intensity.

Interpol Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Sonically, it was a fine set: Banks’ slicing vocal tone perked up the audience for fan favorites “Obstacle 1,” “Evil” and “Rest My Chemistry.” Of the new tunes, the best was “Fables,” a more melodic offering with its humble pleading: “It’s time we made something stable / ‘’Cause we’re in the sights of perfect danger.”

Leagues more exhilarating was the preceding set from Spoon, a 70-minute foil of raw emotion and bounding humanity, led by steady frontman Britt Daniel. The Texas-bred outfit landed around the same time as Interpol, scoring huge critical praise for its albums “Girls Can Tell” (2001) and “Kill The Moonlight” (2002), which blended elements of indie-rock, classic rock and new wave. The latter album landed a minor hit in “The Way We Get By,” which was featured prominently in “The O.C.” on TV and in “Stranger Than Fiction” in film. Since then, the group has remained wholly consistent — and on my short list of the most underrated American bands of the last 25 years.

Spoon Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Spoon performed on 8/25/2022 at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ. Nick Scalera | For NJ Advance Media

Their latest album, February’s blues-heavy “Lucifer on the Sofa” is easily one of the year’s best rock records, and was rolled out Thursday with pumping renditions of the crunchy groove single “The Hardest Cut,” the hypnotic “My Babe,” and thrilling “Wild,” co-written by New Jersey superproducer Jack Antonoff in a rare indie-rock credit.

The set’s scene stealer, however, was touring keyboardist Alex Fischel, who morphed his side stage positioning into a magnetic spotlight, absolutely hammering his keys on “Inside Out” and playing spark plug as a second guitarist on “I Summon You.” Few emotions translate better onstage than hunger for and joy derived from a memorable performance and the early crowd was hooked as the sun set over the Jersey Shore town.

Spoon Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Spoon performed on 8/25/2022 at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Daniel, meanwhile, was strong and propulsive at center stage, his voice forever reminding of John Lennon; Thursday’s cover of Lennon’s “Isolation” might’ve been a little on the nose.

Late in the set, Daniel’s rig experienced some technical difficulties, with several stagehands fiddling with his pedals and amp. But even as the guitar cut in and out, the sweat-soaked frontman soldiered on, never mentioning it or delaying the show, a consummate pro.

INTERPOL + SPOON  Lights, Camera, Factions Tour with support from Water From Your Eyes

Interpol began in New York in 1997, when guitarist Daniel Kessler recruited bassist Carlos Dengler and singer/guitarist Paul Banks to form a band. In 2002, with Sam Fogarino on drums, the band signed to Matador records and released Turn On The Bright Lights, which made it to 10th position on NME’s list of 2002’s top releases and Pitchfork named it the year’s #1 album. Over the next decade and a half Interpol would go on to wide critical and commercial acclaim, with five subsequent high charting records on the Billboard 200; earning rave reviews across the map from Rolling Stone to TIME; performing on late night television shows and playing major festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury and headlining Mexico’s Corona Capital. The band (Banks, Kessler and Fogarino) have just finished recording their latest studio album with legendary production duo Flood & Moulder, due for release this year through Matador Records.

Spoon’s tenth album, Lucifer on the Sofa, is the band’s purest rock ’n’ roll record to date. Texas-made, it is the first set of songs that the quintet has put to tape in its hometown of Austin in more than a decade. Written and recorded over the last two years – both in and out of lockdown – these songs mark a shift toward something louder, wilder, and more full-color. Halfway through the recording process, the pandemic hit. The studio shutdown, but frontman Britt Daniel continued writing. “There are songs I wrote last spring [of 2020] that I wouldn’t have come up with otherwise,” he says. “It was that first-of-its-kind moment.” Lucifer on the Sofa is the sound of that moment, a record of defiant optimism, the sound of a band cracking things open and letting them spillout onstage. At a time fraught with uncertainty, it’s shutting the door on the devil you know and never looking back.

Rolling Stone Has a New Album Rating System. It’s the Old Rolling Stone Album Rating System

By Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone

Like every publication that has ever existed, Rolling Stone has thrown its share of editorial curveballs that didn’t quite make it over the plate — from sending out free roach clips to readers in 1968 to putting the very hairy band Blind Melon on the cover, completely naked, in 1993. What’s important about these odd decisions is that we saw the error of our ways and learned from our mistakes (usually). There was never a Rolling Stone coke-spoon promotion, and we didn’t follow the naked Blind Melon cover with a naked Candlebox cover.

Taylor Swift Indirectly Reminds Dave Grohl That Her Eras Tour Band Does Play Live for Over Three Hours

Another maga republican is accused of misrepresenting military service, trump joked about nazi 'ovens' to his jewish employees, says former trump org vp, snoop dogg earns his olympic stripes with 200-meter sprint.

Now, for a little refresher, here is a guide to the Rolling Stone critical cosmology.

Five:  A classic. This album is perfect in every way and is destined to exert a massive influence on the course of music for years and years to come. Four and a half: Incredible, but we need more time to tell if it’s a classic. Look for it at the very top of our Albums of the Year list. Four: Excellent. It’s important and impactful and nearly every song on the album is great. Even listeners who don’t always like this artist or genre will immediately recognize how good it is. Three and a half: Great. If you like this genre, you will like this record. If you like the artist in question, you’ll love it. Three: Good. The artist did what they do, and it turned out fine. Two and a half: Eh. Either the artist tried something different and didn’t quite pull it off, or they just weren’t on their game this time out. Two: Fair. Even if you’re a pretty big fan, you’re gonna have to engage in some pretty high-level magical thinking to make this one seem good. One and a half: Skip it. One: Poor. You’re definitely going to want to check this one out, if only to bask in the breadth and scope of its manifest horribleness.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

interpol spoon tour 2022

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

interpol spoon tour 2022

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

interpol spoon tour 2022

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
