An Overview of Nursing in Ireland:

1. The Career Pathway Salary of Nurses in Ireland  2. Working Conditions  3. How to Apply as a Nurse in Ireland  4. Documents to Comply 5. FAQs

Every country's population is aging, but Ireland's population is aging at a rapid rate. True enough, Ireland is in desperate need of trained healthcare professionals, but that isn't the only reason nurses are flocking to the nation. This location is unquestionably a fantastic place to work, live, and relax. 1NURSE.com's team has assembled all of the required information for international nurses interested in working and living in Ireland. To learn more, keep reading this article. If you're a foreign nurse who wants to work in Ireland, you must have/be:

  • Complete the academic requirements
  • Hold a Nursing license in your country
  • Nursing experience of at least 2 years is required.
  • Nurses from outside the EU must pass the IELTS exam in order to be considered for an interview.
  • Complete credential review

Section A: The Career Pathway

Nurses and midwives are in short supply in Ireland now, and the profession's overall age profile suggests that the shortfall will worsen in the coming decade as our population grows and demographics evolve. The Irish government's plan of depending on migrant nurses and midwives to fill the gap is unsustainable. In Ireland, there are numerous options for pursuing a career as a nurse. The following are some of the most popular job paths in this country. Clinical The clinical track provides you with the chance to work in a wide range of nursing and midwifery positions. The emphasis is on delivering direct patient care. It can lead to specialty or advanced practice positions.

Management Pathway to management Nurse and midwife managers assist patients by overseeing the personnel who look after them. This path can lead to positions in service or operations management. Their responsibilities include:

  • decision-making and planning
  • assuming command and leading
  • assisting and inspiring employees
  • being a good example

Section B: Salary of Nurses in Ireland

The average annual salary for an Entry Level Registered Nurse (RN) is €29,350 ranging from a minimum of  €21,000 to maximum of  €37,000. The average annual salary for a Mid Career Registered Nurse (RN) is €37,336 ranging from a minimum of  €32,000 to a maximum of  €50,000.

SOURCE: Average Registered Nurse (RN) Hourly Pay in Ireland. (2023) PayScale. https://www.payscale.com/research/IE/Job=Registered_Nurse_(RN)/Salary

Section C: Working Conditions

Nurse-Patient Ratio: While statistics on nurse-to-patient ratios in Ireland is sparse, it is reasonable to assume that during the afternoon shift, our nurse-to-patient ratios range from 1:6 to 1:15.

Hospital Equipment: Ireland has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. The country’s healthcare is of very high quality, with public satisfaction ratings of 90% for outpatient and 85% for inpatient services. General Practitioners are almost completely satisfied, with a score of 97 percent.

Working Atmosphere: Ireland's healthcare system is not only good for your career, but it's also good for your health. As a citizen of the country, you'll be able to take advantage of better healthcare. Working in healthcare in Ireland is an excellent step for your happiness. The Irish worker, according to a 2016 research, is the fourth happiest in the world. Furthermore, Dublin comes out on top as Europe's happiest city for employees. The United Kingdom was recognized as the 20th best country for workers out of 35 countries studied.

Shifting: Under the HRA, nurses and midwives' standard wor-week was increased to 39 hours. They are, however, allowed to keep the 37.5-week schedule with the resulting salary adjustment. Staff who did not choose this option will need to create new rosters that include the additional hours. Patient Safety: To improve the quality and safety of the care they offer, registered nurses participate in a variety of collaborative initiatives.

Section D: How to Apply as a Nurse in Ireland

You must first register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland if you are a foreign nurse or midwife who wants to work in Ireland (NMBI).

THE NMBI The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is Ireland's nursing regulatory body. Any nurse or midwife intending to practice in Ireland must be registered and approved by the National Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), which is analogous to AHPRA in Australia and NZNC in New Zealand.

Irish Registry For Nurses and Midwives - Choose The Division That Best Suits You The NMBI's registry is broken down into several divisions. These include various nursing and midwifery specializations.  The nursing or midwifery training programs you have completed will influence your decision. For instance, if you have completed general nurse training in your home country, you would apply to the General Division of the register. Although you are allowed to apply for more than one division, you must have the necessary qualifications in each field.

Application Group It's critical to select the appropriate application group because it will influence which documents you'll need to send to the NMBI and how your application will be handled.

The three groups are as follows:

  • 1st Group. You trained as a general nurse or midwife in the EU/EEA and are eligible for automatic or acquired recognition.

The EU establishes minimum standards for nursing and midwifery training. When a country becomes an EU member, they must ensure their training programs meet these standards. If your training began after your country's compliance, you can qualify for Automatic Recognition, allowing NMBI to automatically register you upon application. Refer to page 9 of the PDF for the specific compliance dates. If you started your training before your country met the EU standards, you may be eligible for Acquired Recognition. To qualify, demonstrate that your post-qualification work experience as a nurse or midwife is sufficient for registration. Contact your country's nursing or midwifery registration authority for evidence of your professional practice.

  • 2nd group. You were educated in a division other than general nursing or midwifery in the EU/EEA, or you were educated as a general nurse or midwife but want to be recognized under the general system.

You are eligible for Group 2 if your training as a general nurse or midwife from an EU/EEA country does not meet Automatic or Acquired Recognition standards. Additionally, if you've trained in an EU/EEA country in a specialization outside general nursing or midwifery, you also belong to Group 2 because there are no agreed-upon EU standards for these specializations. If you fall into Group 2, the NMBI will evaluate your application using the 'general system,' conducting a comprehensive assessment of your training and education. They will compare your training to the applicable standards in Ireland for your specific specialization. Regarding English language requirements for Group 1 and Group 2 applicants, NMBI doesn't have official requirements. However, individual employers might request evidence of your English language proficiency, like an IELTS Certificate at a specific grade.

  • 3rd group. You received your education outside of the EU/EEA.

If you're a nurse or midwife trained outside the EU/EEA, you belong to Group 3. To apply for NMBI registration, you need full registration as a nurse or midwife in your current country of residence and completion of a recognized training program. For English language requirements for Group 3 nurses and midwives, if English isn't your first language, you must demonstrate sufficient proficiency to carry out nursing duties in Ireland. The only accepted proof by NMBI is an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) certificate. Your IELTS certificate should be no more than two years old at the time of application and must have an overall score of 7, with at least 7 in speaking and writing, and at least 6.5 in reading and listening.

Application Process 1. Download the Overseas Application Request Form, fill it out, and send it in. The application request form can be found here. You'll need to provide your contact information and specify the division(s) of the register you'd like to apply for as you fill out the form.

If you are a Group 3 applicant who has taken the IELTS exam, you must supply your TRF (Test Report Form) number so that the NMBI can verify the authenticity of your IELTS certificate. This number can be found on your IELTS certificate in the lower right corner. You will need to provide your credit/debit card details in order to pay your Overseas Registration Application Fee.

2. The NMBI will send you an Overseas Registration Application Pack once they have processed your application request form and received your fee.

3. You'll find certain forms in the application pack that you'll need to send to various authorities in your country (or any country in which you have been registered or have practiced). The authorities must fill out the forms and deliver them to the NMBI, together with any required documentation.

4. When the NMBI has received all of the necessary material, they will evaluate your application. Keep in mind that you can check the status of your application through your online account.

5. You’ll receive a decision letter from the NMBI.

Section E: Ireland Immigration For Nurses

You may require a visa to live and work in Ireland if you are not from an EU/EEA country. Because the immigration and visa laws are complicated, it's advisable to check the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service's website to see if you need a visa and which one is appropriate for you. Link: https://www.irishimmigration.ie/

Critical Skills Employment Permit For positions that will last at least two years, many nurses and midwives will apply for a Critical Skills Employment Permit, whereas for jobs that will last less than two years, they will apply for a General Employment Permit.

General Employment Permit Either you or your company can apply for a General Employment Permit. To obtain this visa, you must have a job offer of at least 12 months duration and a salary of at least €30,000 per year, though there are occasional exceptions.

Section F: Examination

Aptitude Test You will need to take the aptitude test if your hospital does not provide the adaption program. The Royal College of Surgeons for Ireland conducts a two-day test in Dublin (RCSI). The test is based on the skills that a newly qualified general nurse in Ireland should possess.

OET Exam The Occupational English Test (OET) is a specialized exam designed to evaluate the language skills of healthcare professionals who would be working in an English-speaking country. The minimum OET grade required of overseas-trained nurses to register and work in Ireland has been modified by Ireland's nursing regulatory organization. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has reduced the OET requirement for nurses and midwives from a B to a C+.

IELTS exam For overseas nursing applicants wishing to work and live in Ireland, the International English Language Test System (IELTS) is required. To be able to qualify, you must have an overall score of band 7 on the IELTS exam.

Section G: FAQs

Is nursing a viable profession in Ireland? Nurses can enjoy the following benefits in Ireland. Job flexibility, advancement opportunities, travel, just to name a few. Nurses in Ireland also earn an average annual pay of €38,000 per year.

Is it possible for a foreign nurse to work in Ireland? You must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland if you are trained outside of the EU and want to work as a nurse or midwife in Ireland. Nurses and midwives from other countries who want to work in Ireland can apply to have their information added to the NMBI register.

Nursing jobs in ireland: frequently asked questions, welcome to our nurse jobs page, featuring all the latest nursing jobs in ireland, as well as frequently asked questions below..

Nurse standing in a hospital

Nursing is one of the most demanding and fulfilling careers you could have. Along with the challenges come many advantages such as job flexibility with wide and varied career opportunities. It’s a job you can travel with, effectively giving you a passport to the world. It also gives good job security, excellent maternity plans and a true vocation for life.

How many nurses are there in Ireland?

There are currently over 82,000 nurses registered by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) of which over 65,000 are on the active register.

What are the types of roles available in nursing in Ireland?

There are seven nursing divisions within the register:

• General nurse

• Psychiatric nurse

• Children's nurse

• Intellectual disability nurse

And then - midwifery, public health and tutor.

Just on this website, there are normally over 1,000 nursing jobs available throughout Ireland in urban and rural areas within the Acute, Mental Health and ID (Intellectual Disability) Services.

Within these services there are a huge variety of roles available.

Whatever your temperament and personality, there’s likely to be a nursing specialty to suit.

The working environments can also vary enormously from fast-paced adrenaline-fuelled frontline emergency services to slower-pace environments giving you more time to bond with patients and their families.

Nurses are often under pressure to do a wealth of complex tasks quickly and perfectly every time with high stakes or they may work in a less critical, more relaxed environment with basically ‘well’ patients and more time to talk, listen and plan.

Career options available to registered nurses

You can choose to work with every age, demographic and level of acuteness from premature newborns to the elderly, from school children needing check-ups to adults who are undergoing critical procedures or elective plastic surgery.

The scope is endless. After qualifying, most nurses begin their nursing career as a Staff Nurse.

This is where the real experience and understanding of the world of nursing begins, typically within a hospital or care home environment.

With experience, more senior roles become available such as Nurse Practitioner, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and CNS (Clinical Nurse Specialist).

There are also educational roles to explore e.g. student mentors and management roles such as Ward Sister or Matron, where you’ll oversee a number of wards.

Nurses work in a wide variety of different settings such as hospitals, care homes, nursing homes, the community (going to people’s homes), at GPs, schools and in sexual health clinics.

What are the personal skills you need to be a nurse?

Wherever your career takes you, the following attributes will see you flourish.

Being a good listener

This will help you build trust and rapport with patients, clients and your fellow staff. It will also help you in your role as ‘detective’ in picking up clues to help with accurate diagnosis and appropriate care.

Enjoying meeting new people

This is a big one as it is likely something you will do every day. Good communication skills are also essential in a nurse.

Open to learning and continual personal development

You also need to be committed to the idea of lifelong learning as every day presents new challenges.

Approachable

Being approachable is important too and ultimately being minded to assist people in any way you can to lead independent, healthy, happy lives.

What you need to work as a nurse in Ireland

In order to work as a nurse in Ireland, you will first need to be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). This used to be called the An Bord Altranais (ABA) so if you’ve seen that name mentioned it’s the same thing.

The NMBI website has all the information you need on registering as a nurse or midwife in Ireland.

All nurses and midwifes who practice in Ireland by law must renew their registration with the NMBI every year, which currently costs €145 per year.

If you trained as a nurse or midwife in the Republic of Ireland, you should qualify to register.

If you trained outside Ireland, the NMBI will assess your application and let you know if further training or education is needed.

The NMBI offers a guide for overseas applicants, which can be downloaded from their website.

There is also an English language requirement to be met before your registration can be approved.

Nursing Jobs in Ireland are open to all overseas nurses across all disciplines with a particular demand for general nurses in addition to mental health nurses, learning disability nurses, midwifery and paediatric nurses.

What qualifications do you need to be a registered nurse in Ireland?

How can an Irish nurse move to work in the NHS in the UK?

Irish nurses are highly sought after overseas and any qualifications and training you have received in Ireland are likely to be acceptable in UK, with the appropriate documentation. To work as a Registered Nurse in the UK you must first register with the NMC (Nursing Midwifery Council).

You’ll also need to provide evidence of a certain level of English.

Once you are NMC-registered, you are technically able to work anywhere in UK as a Registered Nurse or midwife.

Naturally, as in any sector, each individual job will require different skills, experience and qualifications.

What Salary can you expect as a Nurse in Ireland?

The average salary for a Registered Nurse in Ireland is €39,296 per year, affected by experience, job role, location, your specialism and whether you are in a Practitioner role or a Staff Nurse.

A newly qualified staff nurse or midwife, that is a nurse who has finished college, but has yet to be registered under the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), would start on an annual salary of around €24,850.

After tax, that’s around €21,700, or a net monthly income of around €1,800.

First Stop On The Travel Nursing Europe Express! The UK!

First and foremost to register as an RN in the UK you must be an RN in your home country.

Secondly, you must have 1 full year of experience in your home country before you can become an RN in the UK.

Third, if you are applying from a country that’s not in the European Union, you will be required to have an assessment of your training. thTe UK has only one licensing board: The Nursing and Midwifery Council. To become an RN in the UK one must pass three tests and apply.

  • A theory Test
  • Clinical Test
  • International English Language Testing System Exam (IELTS)

Once you pass these tests you can join the register of UK travel nurses. Passing all of the necessary tests, completing your application and beginning your first assignment in the UK usually takes 6 months.   But once you do complete the application process you can complete the NMC’s Overseas Nurses Programme (ONP)  While modern nursing was founded by the British, nurses in the UK do not have as much responsibility as their counterparts across the Atlantic. In the UK doctors are those that assess patients and nurses often don’t even analyze blood results, perform injections or read Electrocardiograms .

As with any international labor, you must have a valid Visa to work in the UK. But with the current nursing shortage in the UK right now your skill set is in very high demand so it is very possible for nurses to get a visa.

For any work Visa, you will need to be sponsored by a health facility where you will have to work for at least one year.

While there used to be are two tiers of Work Visas that travel nurses typically used, the General Skilled Migration Visa was closed in April 2011.

The only Work Permit Travel Nurses can apply for is a Tier 2 Work Permit. Since there is a nationwide nursing shortage throughout the UK, Nurses are often heavily considered for a tier 2 work permit since they are filling a position that cannot be filled by a British Citizen.

The only steps that experienced travel nurses have to worry about is getting a confirmed sponsorship by an Employer in the UK and travel nursing agencies should be able to help with that.

The Next Stop On The Travel Nursing Europe Express! Ireland!

If you’re interested in international travel nursing, but want to keep speaking English, then travel nursing in Ireland is a great opportunity for you! You’d have almost all of Europe at your doorstep! Since the demand for nurses is growing stronger and stronger travel nursing in Ireland is growing increasingly popular.

Travel nursing in Ireland is not easy. To travel nurse in Ireland you have to register with the Irish Nursing Board, or the An Bord Altranais. Their information is listed below. Also, all overseas applications go through the NMBI, The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. They are rejecting applicants at a record rate. Marvel Williamson a nursing school professor and dean with an MSN, a PhD and extensive clinical experience.

Per the journal.ie there were 101 US applications for travel nursing in Ireland in 2015 and only 9 nurses were admitted. From 2013 there were 247 US applications and only 24 registrations.

One of the most important parts of your overseas application is that you’ve completed 1,533 theoretical hours and 2,300 clinical hours. During the course of a US BSN nurses on average clock 340 theoretical hours, or classroom hours and 1,000 hours of clinical instruction.

Marvel Williamson said that the application process focused on nursing school curriculum over recent work experience. In Irish nursing schools, the clinical hours are comprised of hours in which a student is an apprentice to a nurse without a professor. But in the US almost all clinical hours have professor supervision.

NMBI also understands that US nurses must pass the NCLEX before they become an RN so hours as a graduate nurse may be questioned thoroughly.

Unless you are an EU citizen you will have to get an employment visa.

The Travel Nursing Europe Express Keeps Going To Spain!

In the early 2000s, Spain had a glut, or oversupply, of both Doctors and Nurses. But while the glut of doctors has remained, the oversupply of nurses is fading as nurses in 2018 and beyond are in high demand according to the OECD .

The OECD, The Organization of Economic Co-Operation & Development, estimates the worldwide average nurse: inhabitant ratio as 9:1000. Spain today has 5.4 nurses for every 1,000 citizens. Part of that difference can be explained by the Spanish expectation of family members to take care of loved ones after operations, not nurses.

Visiting hours in Spanish hospitals are completely unrestricted as family members can, and often do, stay in the hospital with their loved one all night. Family members usually assume the responsibilities of changing bedpans, spoon feeding & giving the pills the doctor gave them.

The above can be explained, at least partially, by the fact that the Spanish have a public health system that is very underfunded. While Spanish Citizens get to enjoy very cheap healthcare, working with them would require Spanish language fluency.

But there are some coastal areas that can place English speaking nurses as there are pockets of internationals and expatriates. The Nursing agencies in Spain can be difficult to find, as they hardly advertise. There are some online directories of agencies, like this one on the Costa Del Sol .

Costa Del Sol has an aging population, so nurses will often work inside of people’s homes. So while the agencies are looking for qualified nurses, they’re also looking for compassion and care. The setting is a little bit more laid back than a hospital ward, but the tradeoff is that nurses in Spain have to be a little bit more flexible to the patient’s needs and timing. This kind of work is a lot less clinical than most countries.

One piece of advice for travel nurses interested in nursing in Spain is: learn Spanish. The Spanish Nurse’s Association, or La Organización Colegial de Enfermería , has a website that is only in Spanish for example. Also, communication in the medical field can be vital. As accustomed to internationals as the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council is the Spanish Nurses’ Association is not nearly as prepared for international nurses. But Travel Nursing in Spain is very possible, but also might be the last stop of the Travel Nursing Europe Express.

Does The Travel Nursing Europe Express do France?

First and foremost, Travel Nursing in France, like Germany or Sweden, requires complete fluency in the native tongue. No, if you’ve taken a French class in high school and haven’t spoken French since then you’re most likely not fluent.

If you can pass the French competency exam, then you must acquire validation of your medical profession. Unlike the UK, the French will not take your US training into account. French nurses have to go through their own rigorous trade school experience operated by Hospitals.

Even Non-French Europeans have a hard time getting their nursing certifications to be taken seriously inside of France, and for Non-EU citizens, it’s even harder. Unfortunately, in order for the Travel Nursing Europe Express to continue in France, an American would have to re-train in France in their French. They’re very particular when it comes to their French language being spoken properly, especially towards Paris.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Politics latest: Gordon Brown says UK seeing 'destitution we haven't seen for years'

Former prime minister Gordon Brown has told Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge the UK's seeing "destitution we haven't seen for years", describing the youngsters suffering most as "austerity's children".

Hundreds of young men have died trying to use boats to get from Senegal to the Canary Islands.

On this episode of the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson hears about what's been called the "deadliest and busiest migrant passage in the world".

Niall is joined by our Africa correspondent Yousra Elbagir who has been to the fishing town of Mbour on the Senegalese coast to see the scale of the problem.

Plus, in the UK, our communities correspondent Becky Johnson has been speaking to asylum seekers who say they're considering not attending appointments which are a condition of their immigration bail.

It comes as the Home Office tries to trace thousands of missing asylum seekers, with a view to deporting some of them to Rwanda in a bid to deter illegal small boat Channel crossings.

In January 2023, Rishi Sunak made five promises.

Since then, he and his ministers have rarely missed an opportunity to list them. In case you haven't heard, he promised to:

  • Halve inflation
  • Grow the economy
  • Reduce debt
  • Cut NHS waiting lists and times
  • Stop the boats

See below how he is doing on these goals:

By Faye Brown , political reporter

Labour has launched the process to select a general election candidate to replace Jeremy Corbyn in the London seat of Islington North.

The former Labour leader has had the party whip suspended since 2020 over his response to a report into antisemitism, meaning he currently sits as an independent MP.

Last year he was  effectively blocked from standing  for Labour after the party's ruling National Executive Committee (NEC) backed a motion to prevent him from being endorsed for the seat he has represented for more than 40 years.

The veteran MP was first elected to represent Islington North in 1983 and has won it at each of the last 10 elections, often by a comfortable margin.

Mr Corbyn, who remains a Labour member, has still not said whether he plans to run as an independent. Doing so could result in him being suspended from the party he has been part of for 50 years.

You can read more from Sky News below:

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer are both facing a historic lack of popularity among ethnically diverse communities, new polling suggests.

While ethnically diverse community voting trends are incredibly complex and almost always hard to predict, some polling can give useful indications that can speak to the mood of the country.

A comprehensive set of data based on polling by Ipsos and shared exclusively with Sky News gives us a general sense of how the leaders of the two main parties are faring at this very specific time.

Mr Sunak was named the UK's next leader on the festival of Diwali, serving as a reminder of the milestone in Britain's evolution as a multicultural and multi-faith society.

He's the UK's first prime minister from an ethnically diverse background and the first Hindu prime minister, but in terms of how much ethnically diverse communities have rewarded him for these historic firsts, it's a somewhat surprising figure.

You can read more from Sky News here:

The British Medical Association and the government have mutually agreed to explore mediation, a step which could ultimately end strike action by junior doctors.

A mediator has been agreed between the two parties, and they will shortly the process in a bid to end months of disruption to the medical field.

Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said: "As Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, my duty is to patients and I want to pursue all avenues to resolve the dispute with the BMA junior doctors committee.

"This will ensure they can focus on delivering the highest quality care and help consolidate our recent progress on waiting lists.

"I am pleased the BMA have agreed to explore mediation and I am hopeful that it will provide a way forward."

Labour's attempt to specifically ban "ninja swords" in the UK has been defeated in the House of Commons.

MPs voted 272 to 171, majority 101, against new clause 59, which would have banned the weapon.

They also voted 275 to 167, majority 108, to reject new clause 44, which sought to replace "prostitution for gain" with "sexual exploitation of an adult".

A Liberal Democrat proposal designed to make it an offence to fail to meet pollution performance commitment levels was defeated by 268 votes to 17, majority 251.

Consideration of the Criminal Justice Bill has ended for the day, with the second day of report stage yet to be scheduled.

Ninja swords are "difficult to ban" as straight-edged swords can be held for commemorative purposes, justice minister Laura Farris said.

Responding to shadow justice minister Alex Cunningham, she said: "I wanted to just provide the reassurance that there are both straight-bladed ninja swords, which I know that his amendment is directed at, but also curved swords.

"They're both covered. Curved swords were banned by the government in 2008.

"He will know that possessing a sword or any knife, even a kitchen knife, in a public place without good reason is already a criminal offence punishable by up to four years in prison."

The UK will spend £140m next year helping starving people in Yemen who are suffering one of the most "acute humanitarian crises in the world", the deputy foreign secretary has said.

Speaking exclusively to Sky News, Andrew Mitchell raised the plight of the Yemeni people, whom he said were living "on the margins of subsistence" following nearly a decade of civil war.

Mr Mitchell promised that the UK's bilateral support for Yemen would increase by 60% and that any money provided would be designed "directly to help people who are in a very perilous humanitarian position".

"It is Britain doing good, going to the rescue of the most desperate people in the world and helping them," he said.

The deputy foreign secretary's intervention comes following months of reporting from Yemen from Sky News' special correspondent Alex Crawford, who has detailed how the war in Gaza has had an adverse impact on the Yemeni people.

Yemen's Houthi militants, backed by Iran, have targeted ships in the Red Sea region which they claim are linked to Israel or helping its war effort.

"Chaos" in the UK's prisons was a point of focus for Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister's Questions earlier today.

Shortly after, it was announced an emergency measure has been triggered by the Ministry of Justice to deal with prison overcrowding in England.

Operation Early Dawn will see defendants in police custody remain there - and not be transferred to magistrates' courts for bail hearings - in case there is no space in jail cells for that prisoner if they are remanded into custody.

Sky News understands the measure is just being used in London and the North East, at the moment.

The Law Society, which represents solicitors in England and Wales, says many magistrates' court cases will be delayed as a result, with the most serious cases given priority.

Read more from our  political reporter  Alix Culbertson :

Still on the topic of the current Labour leader, Gordon Brown tells Sir Keir Starmer to "stick to his principles".

Asked what his advice would be to Sir Keir, the former prime minister says: "To stick to his principles.

"Keir Starmer I know as a very talented but also very principled person.

"I do think the pressures of politics are such that you have to deal with problems every day that you never anticipated, but you must never lose sight of why you're there in the first place.

"And if you do lose sight of that, then you will fail.

"If you don't lose sight of it and commit to your principles in implementing them, then I think you'll succeed, and I'm sure he will."

That ends our coverage of tonight's Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge . Stick with us for more news and analysis from Westminster through the evening.

Gordon Brown, the former Labour leader, has urged Sir Keir Starmer to undertake a "root and branch review" of Universal Credit.

In a conversation with  Sophy Ridge , Mr Brown was asked whether the current Labour leader should commit to scrapping the two-child limit on the benefit.

Claimants of Universal Credit - with some exceptions - are only able to claim child benefit for a maximum of two children at the moment.

He says: "You've got to look at every aspect of Universal Credit which has gone wrong. And it's not, of course, just the two child rule that is causing problems.

"It's the caps that have been placed on, for example, housing benefits. And it's the deductions that are taking place.

"If you go on to Universal Credit, you don't get any benefit for five weeks. Therefore, you've got to take out a loan.

"Therefore, half of the people on Universal Credit are now paying back loans that they took out because they didn't have any benefit under the system's rules.

"And that means the DWP, the Department of Work and Pensions, it's now the biggest debt collector in the country, and some people are having 25% of the benefit cut every week, some people 30%.

"And that means they're forced further and further into poverty."

Mr Brown says: "All these rules have got to be looked at."
