A Vision for Active Parish Communities

journey of faith conference

Where We’ve Been

What we’ve learned over the last few years, will help us understand how to embark on a new journey to live our Catholic faith in new, more outgoing ways.

Key Milestones

2019 – rural parish groupings pioneer new ways forward.

As we work together in families of parishes, we have a better understanding to  address the decline of available priests and active parish members.

2019 – Unite shows the power of community

This archdiocesan worship and festival event opened a door to new possibilities,  uniting thousands of northeast Nebraska Catholics across all demographics.

journey of faith conference

2020 – Archdiocese Pastoral Conference sets the BIG goal

The goal set by Archbishop Lucas at this diocesan-wide event guides our Journey of Faith. Throughout our work together, we share an overriding goal to become more missional,  outward-facing communities by 2026.

2021 – Archdiocese Pastoral Conference encourages active faith

Diocesan-wide progress continues with a focus on habits for living our faith: prayer,  compassion, friendship and invitation.

See your ancestor’s ‘journey of faith’ with new FamilySearch discovery experience

Journey of faith includes records from 9 collections — the first time familysearch has pulled this many church databases into one place.

journey of faith conference

For the early Saints, gaining a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ was not a one-time event — it was a journey of faith. And it’s the same for Church members today.

That’s what Kathy Warburton, FamilySearch marketing manager, hopes people see through the new Journey of Faith discovery experience .

“As we grow in the gospel, it is a journey that we take step by step, event by event,” Warburton said. “It’s little actions that we do that eventually will lead us to the temple and to the increased faith and testimony. And there are challenges and obstacles that we overcome in the process. … So it’s a journey of faith that we want to show — this is what our ancestors went through and it can strengthen us for our own journey of faith.”

The Journey of Faith experience — found at familysearch.org/campaign/journeyoffaith — invites Latter-day Saints to discover some of the faith-building milestones of their ancestors that helped shape their family story. It offers a broader view of an ancestor’s spiritual journey from a wide variety of sources.

What is the Journey of Faith experience?

Through collaboration with the Church History Library, Brigham Young University and other organizations, FamilySearch has tied nine collections of early Church records into one discovery experience — the first time FamilySearch has pulled this many Church databases into one place.

Russell Lynch, who works with the FamilySearch engagement division, said the beauty of the Journey of Faith experience is that “the information is not just in one place. So we’re hoping now to be able to highlight different sources or organizations that have information that could be helpful to people.”

Records in Journey of Faith come from the following nine collections:

  • Church History Biographical Database — a combination of the Missionary Database (missionaries who served between 1830 and 1940) and the Pioneer Database (pioneers who immigrated to Utah between 1847 and 1868).
  • Saints by Sea — a BYU database of first-person accounts of Saints who immigrated to the U.S. and traveled to the Salt Lake Valley from 1840-1932.
  • Joseph Smith Papers — images and transcripts of extant Joseph Smith documents from 1828 to 1844 with textual and contextual annotation.
  • Saints, Vol. 1 — the first of a four-volume narrative history of the Restoration.
  • Nauvoo Community Project — a BYU database of residents of Nauvoo, Illinois, from 1839 to 1846.
  • Wilford Woodruff Papers — images and transcripts of Wilford Woodruff’s documents from 1828 to 1898. (The Wilford Woodruff Papers Foundation is an independent, private nonprofit organization not affiliated with the Church. However, the Church History Department supports and encourages the Wilford Woodruff Papers Project.)
  • Diaries of Emmeline B. Wells — a collection of Emmeline B. Wells’ journals spanning 1844 to 1920.
  • The First Fifty Years of Relief Society — transcripts and annotation for 78 key documents that illustrate the development of Relief Society from 1842 to 1892.
  • Baptism and endowment information from FamilySearch Family Tree .

What does the Journey of Faith experience look like?

Upon signing into FamilySearch, the Journey of Faith experience will display up to 20 ancestors tied to early Church records. Each ancestor will have a timeline that shows some faith-building milestones of their life, such as when they were baptized, endowed, served a mission or immigrated to Utah.

If an ancestor is mentioned in the Wilford Woodruff Papers, Joseph Smith Papers, Diaries of Emmeline B. Wells or First Fifty Years of Relief Society, a link in the bottom left will go to the mention of their ancestor in that specific collection.

journey of faith conference

For example, Edson Whipple (image above) lived in Nauvoo, was baptized at age 35, served in the Joseph Smith Presidential Campaign Mission, was endowed at age 40, and traveled to the Salt Lake Valley with the Wilford Woodruff Company. He is mentioned in the Wilford Woodruff Papers.

Members can view photos and stories of their ancestor, share their discoveries, and add them to their ancestor’s page on FamilySearch.

What can I learn from the Journey of Faith experience?

Lynch said one benefit of this discovery experience is that members can see that their ancestors’ journey of faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ wasn’t easy.

When members today face spiritual challenges, they can see “it’s not just a 21st century problem,” Lynch said. “Other people in their family have also had challenges that they had to overcome.”

Warburton added: “I think at some point, in some way, we’re all pioneers. And we all have different experiences and different things that we do need to document and share so that family members — both those that are living and those that come after us — can be strengthened by our experiences. ...

“And even if we don’t have ancestors who were early Church members,” she continued, “we can still be strengthened by their examples.”

Faith and science directed ASU grad Rafael Ortiz on his undergraduate journey

Editor’s note:  This story is part of a series of profiles of notable spring 2024 graduates.

Faith and science led Rafael Ortiz III to success as an undergraduate at Arizona State University. His journey will culminate when he graduates in May with a bachelor's degree in astrophysics from The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' School of Earth and Space Exploration, with honors from Barrett, The Honors College.

“I came to ASU declaring astrophysics as my major, switched to ethics and digital culture, and then returned to astrophysics within three semesters. This return to astrophysics came through Bible studies, conversations with God and a realization that ASU is the place to specialize in space,” said Ortiz, who is from Elmhurst, Illinois.

He was selected Barrett Honors College's Outstanding Graduate for Research from the spring 2024 graduating class. He received the New American University President’s Scholarship, the 2020 Gold Medal in Science and the 2023 Barrett Honors College Award for Innovation.

Ortiz also was a finalist for Outstanding Undergraduate Student of the Year in 2023 and received the Dominic Frattura: School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership Scholarship, which is given to one member of Sigma Nu fraternity at ASU each semester. He was also an honorable mention for the Universities Space Research Association Scholarship.

He worked on the School of Earth and Space Exploration’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) PEARLS project and, as an ASU NASA Space Grant recipient and intern, assisted with processing JWST cosmic ray rejection data. He co-authored six publications in the Astrophysical Journal, a leading journal for astrophysics.

He interned at the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory during the summers of 2019 and 2022. In 2019, he received the Fermilab Science Award.

Ortiz served as a Barrett Honors College teaching assistant and completed an honors thesis titled “Why Do We See Beauty?” that included a self-published 51-page book of poems and a 96-page paper on the interdisciplinary interaction between Taoism, philosophy, Buddhism, spirituality and art.

He was a member of Honors Devils, a student organization that assists with recruiting honors students, and served as a student body senator and as the director of student affairs for Undergraduate Student Government on the Tempe campus. He was chief of staff of the Leadership Forum at ASU and president of the Order of Omega Leadership Honors Society.

As an ASU space student ambassador, Ortiz worked with the School of Earth and Space Exploration, the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and representatives of private industry to support student initiatives and research projects.

As the end of the spring semester approaches, we asked Ortiz to look back on his undergraduate experience at ASU. This is what he told us.

Question: What is an interesting moment, story or accomplishment in your ASU career?

Answer: I remember my spring semester as a freshman in 2021. COVID regulations had prevented a lot of in-person activities and no one was really on campus, but it was one of the most pivotal seasons in my life as I began my honors thesis, picked up poetry and built many relationships within Barrett.

Q: What’s something you learned while at ASU — in the classroom or otherwise — that surprised you or changed your perspective?

A: I've grown so much in my faith thanks to my lord and savior Jesus Christ. Ever since my first semester here at ASU, I've been actively engaged in Bible studies with so many different networks on campus, and it's been beautiful to see how my time at ASU has not only been an academic journey but a spiritual one too. God is so good, and I could not be where I am today without him, the people who brought me closer to Jesus, and the mentors that influenced the man that I am today.

Q: Why did you choose ASU?

A: Palm trees and sunsets! Plus, ASU has an amazing relationship with NASA too, of course!

Q: Why did you choose Barrett Honors College?

A: I loved how Barrett offered the benefits of a small school at one of America's largest universities. Being able to create relationships with all of my professors and my peers is much more possible when you're in a place like Barrett that fosters a sense of community. I also knew I wanted to engage in an undergraduate thesis, and Barrett offered the tools, resources and support to make that happen.

Q: Which professor taught you the most important lesson while at ASU?

A: Stephanie deLusé , teaching professor and honors faculty fellow in Barrett Honors College, taught me invaluable lessons during my time in her Human Event course, both as a student and as a teaching assistant. The lesson that I carry with me day to day is one about meaning: No matter what the circumstance or where we're at, we always have the freedom to be responsible about the meaning we get to create in life. Whether creating or experiencing art, championing our sufferings or sharing life with those that we love, we always have the choice to make this life meaningful.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to those still in school?

A: Keep God first and become a sponge on campus because there is so much to learn, see, try and do at a place like ASU!

Q: What was your favorite spot on campus, whether for studying, meeting friends or just thinking about life?

A: Barrett Honors College was my favorite place. I did lots of studying, meeting friends and thinking about life there.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

A: I'd love to get into the workforce for a year or two before going back to school and pursuing a PhD in astrophysics.

Q: If someone gave you $40 million to solve one problem on our planet, what would you tackle?

A: I would put it all toward ending child sex trafficking.

We want to make your first visit to Journey as easy as possible! We have answers to most of your questions listed below. If you’d like someone to reach out to you before you attend, fill out a Connect Card.

If this will be the first time attending with your kids, you can speed your check-in process by pre-registering before you arrive.

We can’t wait to meet you!

On a typical Sunday our parking team will wave hello and direct you as you enter our parking areas. Just follow the smiling faces in the bright orange vests.

As you’re walking toward a building, a greeting team member will help you find where the auditorium, restrooms and kids areas are located. Check out these links to learn more about our students and kids environments.

If you need anything throughout your visit—directions, or have a question—feel free to ask anyone with a volunteer lanyard for help. We’re a friendly bunch, and we’d love to make you feel welcome!

Kids from infants to fifth grade have their own unique and fun experience of learning about Jesus on their level in a separate age-appropriate environment happening during the Sunday Services. Each Sunday kids have their own service with singing, a Bible lesson, crafts and small group time.

To see what your kids are learning, check out the  Journey Kids webpage . For nursing mothers, our Manhattan Beach campus also has a family room where moms and infants can watch the service together.

Middle school and high school students experience the adult service on Sunday, but have their own midweek gatherings on Tuesday evenings. Check out the  students page  to learn more.

Our Sunday services typically last about 60 minutes. We start by singing a few songs, then you’ll hear a message from one of the members of our teaching team. To get a feel for our teaching style, check out a recent message series.

Most people dress casually, but you are welcome to wear whatever makes you comfortable.

We all have something we could use to fill in that blank, right? You may be from a different faith background… or no faith background at all. You may be divorced or a single parent. You may be broke, addicted, a skeptic, and the answer will always be the same: everyone is welcome!

So come as you are, and we’ll see you on Sunday!
