Travelling: Post-Pandemic FAQs

Written by: JOY! Travel  Article source: JOY! Magazine

1. Is International Travel Open For South Africans? Most countries have now opened to vaccinated travellers from South Africa. Israel has re-opened for vaccinated tour groups and JOY! Travel will be commencing tours from March 2022. Most countries in Europe are also accepting SA travellers – but you must check the country requirements before booking any trip, as they do differ. We will be conducting our popular Andre Rieu Maastricht Tour in the Netherlands in July 2022. We expect Turkey to open soon – and when they do, we will commence our 7 Churches of Revelation Bible Tours from May 2022.

2. Will I Need A Covid-19 Vaccine To Travel? At this stage, vaccine proof is required for (most) international travel destinations. We do not expect Israel to do away with vaccine proof for at least 3 years – and at present Israel requires that your vaccine be within 1 year prior to arrival – though this may change in 2022. Turkey may (or may not) ease their vaccine requirements in due course, but they are heavily influenced by Europe and as such, we expect nothing will change for at least 1-2 years. Most of Europe requires vaccine proof for entry, though some countries allow travellers (who have not been vaccinated) to enter with a mandatory quarantine period at a government-approved facility (at your own cost).

3. If I Have A Vaccine, Do I Still Need A PCR Test To Fly? Regulations differ by country and by airline; at this stage most airlines and countries require a negative COVID (PCR) test as well as proof of vaccination. We do not expect this to change for the next year, however once the pandemic reaches acceptable “epidemic” levels (hopefully towards the end of 2022), the international community may decide to ease travel requirements. JOY! Travel offers Christian Bible Tours to Israel, Turkey, Greece, (and Andre Rieu Tours in Holland and Christian Cruises on the Med in Europe) from March 2022 – and we will advise all our passengers of the requirements per tour.

You have waited patiently to travel – and very soon we will “lift off” with our Bible Tours. Read this guide and book your JOY! holiday with confidence.

4. What If A Lockdown Takes Place – Can I Still Travel? Regulations differ per country, however JOY! Travel has comprehensive travel insurance that we believe minimises the risks and costs in case of testing positive pre-tour / on tour for COVID, or should a lockdown (in South Africa or overseas) take place. There is always a risk with travelling, but we believe this risk has dropped substantially over the past 18 months, and we feel confident to arrange bucket-list Bible tours for our beloved travellers.

5. Can I Travel Internationally Without A Vaccine? There are a few countries that will accept unvaccinated tourists – however, they usually insist on a negative COVID test and a mandatory quarantine period in a government-approved hotel (timeframe ranges from 5-10 days and is an extra cost for the traveller). JOY! Travel is investigating non-vax tour options and you can obtain more information from our offices. We also have interactive “virtual tours” to Israel – which offer live teaching, ministry, guided info, and worship via Zoom.

6. What Kind Of Experience Can I Expect In A “Post-Covid” World? Our team has been planning life-changing Bible tours and Christian holidays for 15 years. During the “down-time” we have continued to craft special tours that are as easy and “stress-free” as possible for our valued travellers. Before signing up for a tour, we give you all the relevant info and requirements, as well as the details of what you are covered for (in case you test positive). • We have an app for every tour that offers extra info, Bible maps, sermons and pics, it also has all the travel rules at your fingertips. • We conduct a Zoom (and in person) group meeting before your tour commences and send out detailed FAQ travel advice in advance. • Our experienced tour leaders chaperone every tour and look after you! Masks are not required on tours overseas, but strict sanitising does take place. Tours are also smaller due to regulations.

Statement of Faith

  • We believe the Bible to be the inspired, inerrant, and only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
  • We believe in one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal bodily return in power and glory.
  • We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful men, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential. Salvation by the grace of God alone, on the basis of Christ's atonement on the Cross alone, received by faith alone.
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by Who’s indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a Godly life.
  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; of the redeemed to eternal life, and of them that are lost to eternal damnation.
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Finding Joy One Day at a Time...

By jennifer kornegay | photography by big dreamz creative.

joy magazine travel

C ancer has been—and still is—a big part of Susan Reed’s life. It’s a fact that’s hard to reconcile with her easy smile that appears so often and is so freely given to most anyone she encounters. Reed is a cancer survivor. Her husband died of cancer in April 2022. And she’s the Vice President of Oncology Services and Administrator at The Montgomery Cancer Center. Cancer’s kinda everywhere Reed looks. So how does she maintain the hope that’s evident in that aforementioned sunny disposition? How does she provide the care and compassion to others facing cancer that her career demands? And what wisdom can she share about outliving the love of your life? JOY magazine recently sat down with Reed to find out.

JOY: What was your journey to your position at The Montgomery Cancer Center? Reed: I was an accountant working for Price Waterhouse doing audits, and Baptist Health was a client. I spent months at Baptist doing that work, and what I witnessed made me want to be a part of that team. I saw such service. I saw how they shoulder the responsibility to take care of their community, and I felt like I had something to offer that mission. So, I called the CEO at Baptist and said, I don’t know if you have a position open or what that would be, but I want to come work for y’all. They found a place for me, and that was 2010. I was working at a physician’s practice, when in 2015, the administrator at the Cancer Center retired, and they moved me into that role. My husband became a patient here in 2013, so we kinda joked that I was uniquely qualified for the job. It was supposed to be temporary, but here I am. It’s the best job I’ve ever had. What’s your personal history with cancer? In 2011, when I was 31, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. At that time, UAB was the closest place offering the surgical treatment and radiation that I needed. The treatments worked, and I’m now 10 years cancer free, so it is really behind me. There are some lifelong implications when it comes to medicines I can take. My salivary glands don’t work so well anymore. So, I do still think about it, but not often. One thing that does stand out though: I sure wish I’d had the resources we now offer at the Cancer Center. Having to go to Birmingham just made everything more complex. I’m so glad we can now help Montgomery patients get treatment here at home.

Surviorship Starts on Day 1  I don’t really like the “lost the battle” analogy when someone dies from cancer. Cancer survivorship starts on the day of diagnosis, so every day you survive, you win; you are a survivor right then.

Tell us about your husband, Darren. Darren and I met at work; he was the IT guy for Baptist, and I had called the help desk. We got married in December 2011. In spring 2013, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He was an otherwise healthy 42-year-old. He’d noticed some issues but thought they were just changes due to him getting older or thought maybe he should eat a little better, and he didn’t get them checked out. But when he mentioned them to his primary care doctor, he told Darren to get a colonoscopy, so he did. Before they woke him up, they called me back and asked if we had a family surgeon. I was like, wait. What? Do people have family surgeons? They explained he had colon cancer, and he’d need surgery to remove it. When he woke up, I had to tell him. He had surgery that week, and the surgeon was adamant that we meet with oncologist Dr. Scott McDaniel. We did, and he ordered some imaging scans to make sure the cancer was gone. It wasn’t. It had spread to his liver and lungs. Over the next nine years, Darren underwent chemo and radiation and more surgeries and was amazing through all of it. He was a quiet, private person by nature, but he opened up about his cancer experiences to others, and I think him sharing his story really helped people. He died this past April. What do you want people to take away from his story? The face of cancer is changing. Cancer is developing in younger and younger people. You know your body better than anyone else; if something feels off or wrong, pay attention to that and go get it checked out. Darren said multiple times that in retrospect he should have known and could have found out earlier. How has Darren’s cancer affected your work at the Cancer Center? Me watching him go through treatment changed how I manage this place. It hammered home that our job here is as much about the caregiver and family as it is the cancer patient. So much of cancer treatment is outpatient today, and that means families are the ones providing so much of the care. How has losing Darren impacted your outlook on life? When cancer goes to your heart, it wins; don’t let it. And you can fight back by looking for the joy in every day. It is there, and it may be hard, but you can find it. We both kept working. We traveled and enjoyed great times together. Life is still moving around you, and it doesn’t have to be over before it’s actually over just because of cancer. This sounds odd, but a cancer diagnosis can even be a blessing. It changes your perspective in a powerful way; it did mine. Things I thought were important, I realized, they’re not. I set my priorities carefully now. I choose how I spend my time with a different mindset. Darren’s faith was important too. Never once did he question or say, “Why me?”. Because of that, he impacted so many people with his walk through cancer. He was an upbeat force around people who I know needed that, so there are positives there. And despite what we do here, there is still a lot of joy and hope at Cancer Center. I want people to know that. It is an incredible place providing amazing care. Darren had everything he needed here, and the nine years he got were more than anyone said he would have. He didn’t want to waste a moment of that time though in a car or on a plane, so the Cancer Center let us stay home.

Go easy on yourself. As Darren was coming to the end of his life, I was very distraught by the fact that he wouldn’t eat or drink. I was trying so hard to make sure I was giving him food he liked. A nurse pulled me aside and said, “This is not about the food you are giving him; his body is preparing for the end. You need to let that go.” Second, just do the next right thing. And what I mean is, you don’t have to know what happens a year from now. You don’t have to know what next month looks like. Just know what you need to do today. You can’t let the future’s uncertainty overwhelm you. You have to accept that it is unknown. Finally, don’t compare your grief to others; don’t judge it. We’re all different.

One Comment

My Dad, Nathan Hamilton, was a patient at the cancer center. He had a stage 4 glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor. Watching him suffer through that was the hardest thing I have ever experienced. He had to do the maximum amount of radiation following surgery and chemo therapy. The chemo was a breeze compared to the radiation. It burned his face, and it destroyed any of the healthy brain cells he had left. Before the radiation, I still had something of my Dad’s personality. After the radiation, he was almost a vegetable. I wish we had gone with hospice rather than the radiation. Everyone at the cancer center was very nice, but I wish the doctor had told my parents that it would be more merciful to go with hospice. At least I would have had more quality time with him rather than months of extended suffering. I know he would have died either way, but at least he wouldn’t have suffered from the burns and radiation sickness. I still struggle this. Doing the maximum treatment isn’t always the right decision for every patient.

Theresia Gouw, Founding Partner of Acrew Capital and former board member of Hotel Tonight and Trulia, led the investment, with participation from NFX, Founder Collective, Forerunner, and Concrete Rose and angel investors from notable companies like TripAdvisor, Booking Holdings, and more. We will use the funds to grow the team and continue investing in product and customer success.

Dayo witnessed the problems facing travel entrepreneurs firsthand while growing up in the industry supporting his mom’s travel agency business. We knew Acrew was a fit for our vision not just for their travel expertise and investing track record, but also when we learned that Theresia and Maitree Mervana (Acrew investor) also have close family members who were or are travel advisors.

With the recent proliferation of AI, our next focus is to ensure that its use can be truly impactful in our members’ planning workflows. AI is here to stay, but for travel advisors, this is the beginning of an exciting time, not the end. With AI, there are two visions of the world forming. One is the ‘Terminator,’ which is the belief that AI/robots are going to come and control or destroy humans and tell us what to do. The other is the ‘Iron Man suit,’ in which humans will be able to produce more amazing results, faster, with AI and modern technology at their side.

Like our co-founder Chris likes to say, “we are all in on the Iron Man suit,” and we are aiming to flip the script for travel entrepreneurs. Running a travel business has been 80% administrative overhead and 20% curation for far too long. Our vision is to shift the focus back to what truly matters – ensuring that travel entrepreneurs can dedicate their time to crafting unforgettable experiences for their clients. Thanks again to all of you for supporting us on this journey. If you are excited about our mission and want to join our team, we are hiring for multiple roles!

Dayo and Chris

Iconic Idaho | Sponsored

V isit a place where you can discover reverting natural and human history, breathtaking scenery and outdoor adventure, and exemplary Northwest food and drink in Moscow and the Lewis Clark Valley.

Moscow is a vibrant college town with a palpable vibe. The downtown area is brimming with boutique shopping and eclectic dining options that showcase the bounty and seasonality of the region. Wine tasting rooms, brewpubs, and art galleries on par with those of considerably larger Northwest cities only add to the appeal.

Take to the roads for a bike tour through Hell’s Canyon.

Brad Stinson

Shop and Play

The Essential Art Gallery is a brick and mortar dream for lovers of art and gift-giving. Featuring a curated collection of exquisite glasswork and art spanning numerous mediums from producers across the country, it’s a must-visit.

The Moscow Farmers Market has been a tradition since 1976, and by summer the Saturday morning event is in full swing. Local farmers, artists, craftspeople, and musicians provide an inordinately robust array of fresh produce, meat, delicious baked goods, plants, flowers, handmade crafts, and live music.

For hikers, the Idlers Rest Nature Preserve is a true community gem that shoehorns a ton of biodiversity into only 35 acres and showcases it with 5-plus miles of hiking trails. Or get on your bike and explore the interconnected Palouse Recreation Trails. Between the Latah Trail, Paradise Path, and Chipman Palouse Trail, you’ve got more than 38 miles of smooth, paved pathways to enjoy.

Moscow Farmers Market is a summertime favorite.

Eat, Drink and Stay

For breakfast, try a scratch-made meal from the Breakfast club. Enjoy a lunch of homemade soups and sandwiches from Stax or fresh made tacos from Patty’s Kitchen on sixth street near campus. On Main Street, Colter’s Creek Winery Tasting Room pours a wide array of reliably elegant reds in a stunning and architecturally inviting space. And for dinner, Maialina Pizzeria Napoletana provides an authentic Italian meal, while the Nectar Restaurant & Wine Bar nails well-executed and inventive small plates and entrees alongside the town’s best hand-crafted cocktails. Beer lovers also have options. The Moscow Brewing Company is a small brewery and taproom with beers ranging from a Kolsch to kettle sours. With good beer, good food, and great times, The Moscow Alehouse is the consummate Northwest brewpub. At Hunga Dunga Brewing, you’ll find a full lineup of classic craft beer accompanied by an elevated, restaurant-worthy pub grub menu. And when it’s all said and done, the Monarch Motel, a classic roadside inn that received a mid-century modern facelift, is a prime downtown home away from home.

The In-Between

The drive from Moscow to the Lewis Clark Valley is only about a half an hour time-wise, but you’ll experience some dramatic scenery that belies the trip’s lack of distance. After miles of soothing terrain in the form of the rolling plains of the Palouse, Highway 95 dives down into the valley below, where the Clearwater River pours into the Snake. A few pullouts offer panoramic views of the whole affair.

The Lewis Clark Valley

This is where history, adventure, and the modern-day amenities of the Northwest exist in experiential harmony. Enjoy whitewater in the deepest canyon in America, explore several fascinating chapters of human history, and sample the wine being produced by one of the region’s newest and most exciting American Viticultural Areas – all in the Lewis Clark Valley.

History of the Land and those who Call it Home

According to legend, Nimiipuu, “the people,” were created in North Central Idaho at the dawn of time. French fur traders would later refer to them as the Nez Perce. By any moniker, the indigenous people who have called the land home for more than 12,000 years have a rich history and the Nez Perce National Historical Park Visitor Center details it. Take in a poignant and visually striking video that describes their relationship to the land and peruse the engrossing interpretive displays. In October of 1805, the Lewis & Clark Expedition made it to the valley. Located in the Hells Gate State Park, the Lewis & Clark Discovery Center provides insight into the entire expedition. The two-acre outdoor interpretive center on the banks of the Snake River sports educational displays, a gift shop and an original documentary about the Expedition’s visit to the area. The park also affords some excellent water-view hiking and a remarkable basalt rock formation known as the Devil’s Slide.

Don’t miss out on honoring the indigenous community at the Nez Perce National Historical Park Visitor Center

Vino Pairs Well with Adventure

The jaw-dropping scale of Hells Canyon is best experienced from the river. Try a fast and furious jet boat tour with Snake River Adventures in a half or full-day excursion. To get a little more intimate with the Snake or Middle Salmon Rivers, grab a paddle and take a whitewater rafting trip with Northwest River Adventures that lasts anywhere from a half-day to three days. The outfitter also offers bike rentals for those that prefer to stay dry while taking in the winding river on a paved path through town.

The Lewis-Clark Valley became an official AVA (American Viticultural Area) in 2016. For great insight, tastings, and a designated driver, book a tour with Twisted Vine Wine Tours. Whether on a tour or going it alone, stop in to enjoy a tasting at the Idaho Century Farm that is home to Clearwater Canyon Cellars, winners of Wine Press Northwest 2020 Pacific Northwest Winery of the Year. Or partake in chocolate and wine pairings at the sprawling estate of Lindsay Creek Vineyards. If you want to stay close in, head to any number of tasting rooms, including Jovinea Cellars in the thriving Morgan’s Alley section of downtown.
