Please read the following precautions before visiting the campus. Individual visitors are welcome to the campus without making a prior reservation except during restricted periods, such as during summer break and the Year-end and New Years holidays.

Please use public transport as parking is not allowed on campus.

Groups (e.g. high school) wishing to visit the campus are requested to contact the Office of International Affairs beforehand. E-mail: [email protected]

Important notes when visiting campus

• A campus map for the self-guided tour, an SFC Undergraduate Program Brochure and a GIGA Program Brochure for prospective students are available on the first floor of the Media Center (library) or the Alpha Building (Main Building). Please feel free to take them.
• It will be a self-guided tour and there will be no tour guide. Please freely explore the campus on your own.
• If you have any inquiries about the GIGA Program, please visit the counter on the first floor in the Alpha Building (Main Building) between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. only on weekdays. Please understand that we may not be able to provide support depending on the situation.
• You may eat at the cafeteria and restaurants on campus when visiting. Please take thorough precautions for prevention of infections.
• Please use public transportation when visiting the campus (parking is not available). We ask that you check the bus schedule in advance.
• For visits to the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care, click here (Japanese only).

Visitor Guidelines

Please follow the guidelines below when visiting the campus. If you do not follow the guidelines you may be prohibited from entering the campus.

• There are no parking spaces on campus for visitors. Please use public transportation.
• Visitors are allowed to walk around the facilities, common spaces, and the Media Center (Library) on campus. All classrooms and laboratories are off-limits.
• To tour the Media Center (Library), present any proof of identification at the reception counter on the 1st floor. Be sure to check the   Media Center’s operating days and hours in advance.
• We ask that you please be quiet while on campus so as not to disrupt the classes and research activities.
• Photography is allowed during the visit, but we ask that you refrain from taking photos in some areas (such as the Media Center). Photos taken on campus are for personal use only and must not be used in any publications without permission. Commercial photography and filming are not permitted.
• Due to construction work or events on campus, traffic routes may be restricted. Please follow the instructions of the staff in such cases.
• Please note that campus visits cannot be used to attract customers for group tours or commercial purposes.
• Please note that Keio University will not bear any responsibility for incidents that occur during your visit. We kindly ask for your understanding.

Keio Student Exchange Program (Outbound)

The Keio University Student Exchange Program (Outbound) is a study abroad program based on university-wide exchange agreements between Keio University and overseas institutions. For this program, Keio University and its partner institutions aim to instill in their students an international understanding and a broad perspective by offering the opportunity to experience university life in a foreign country for one academic year. Credits obtained during the study abroad period may be transferable to be used towards graduation or completion of courses. Each year, approximately 300 Keio University students (including about 50 SFC students) participate in the programs.

Keio Short-term Study Abroad Programs (Summer/Spring)

Keio University International Center organizes short-term programs during summer and spring holidays. Participants can deepen their understanding of the topic set in each program through lectures and discussions.

SFC Study Abroad Courses

The Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies offer various overseas language programs to students. These programs are held in about 8 different countries and regions during the spring and summer. Approximately 150-200 students join these programs every year to earn credits.

The Master's program of the Graduate School of Media and Governance conducts the Double Degree Program with Yonsei University in Korea and Fudan University in China. Students can obtain two Master's degrees - one from Keio University and the other from Yonsei University or Fudan University - within a minimum of two years after enrolling in this program.

Overseas Activities Support

SFC offers its own subsidy programs, such as a grant for undergraduate students conducting fieldwork in China and Taiwan; and grants for graduate students to support independent research, making presentations at international conferences, etc. Graduate students also have opportunities to participate in internship programs and in international joint research/overseas fieldwork with faculty members. In addition, fieldwork and internships in Japan and overseas related to research activities may be registered for credits by completing prior designated procedures and passing screening.

The Ginkgos of Keio: Coloring the Seasons and Shaping Its History

Many in Japan will regard the ginkgo tree as a symbol of university campuses—Keio University is no exception. At Mita, a large ginkgo tree stands towering above the courtyard of the Mita Quad. At Hiyoshi, an avenue lined with dozens of ginkgos greets visitors as they make their way to the heart of campus. Here we focus on these mighty ginkgos, which have kept watch over Keio throughout its history as the school's closest companions since its campuses were founded well over a century ago.

Ginkgo in Mita Quad a Sanctuary for Keio Students

As one passes through the front gate of Mita Campus and ascends the stairs of the South School Building, a large ginkgo tree appears, towering above the Mita Quad. The benches surrounding the tree, donated by the Keio University Iji-kai (Support Group), provide the students with a place to rest, the arching branches sheltering them from the elements. It is unclear when the ginkgo tree in the quad was first planted, as it is not depicted in early Meiji illustrations. However, the tree appears to be in its infancy in a corner of a photograph, which is believed to have been taken on Mita Campus at some point during the Meiji period. The campus is also home to numerous other ginkgo trees, some of which have endured wind, rain, and disasters since the Edo period, when Mita was the residence of the Shimabara clan.

A Poetic Ode to the Ginkgos of Mita Campus

The ginkgos of Mita were a great source of inspiration for the literary figures of Keio. Among them was the poet Haruo Sato, who enrolled in the school in 1910. Sato left Keio a few years later, but twenty years after his departure, he published "Sake, Uta, Tabako, mata Onna" (lit. "Sake, Songs, Cigarettes, and Women"), featuring the subheading "Mita no Gakuseijidai wo Utaeru Uta" (lit. "Songs of My Student Days in Mita"). The poem features the lines: "A ginkgo leaf withers, Falling and blanketing the garden, Winter exams draw near, Not a single French verse grasped." While it is unclear whether the tree in reference is the ginkgo in the quad, Sato was undoubtedly aware of the tree as a symbol of Mita Campus.

In May 1949, Sato visited the campus to give a public lecture for the Mita Bungakukai (lit. "Mita Literature Society"), titled "Future Prospects of Modern Literature," and spoke of the lush and verdant ginkgos as follows: "...Long ago, I gazed up at the dense greenery of the ginkgo in the schoolyard, swaying in the fragrant breeze, its freshly fallen leaves underfoot. As I leaned in to touch the tree trunk, I said to this sturdy old companion: 'My great friend, your verdant green turns yellow with each passing year, only to become young again, while my hair grows whiter every year, never to regain its youthful hue.'"

Mizuho Aoyagi, who studied French literature at Keio University and later taught French at the school, was another poet who opined about the ginkgo. In 1928, he wrote the lyrics to the school song "Oka no Ue" (Up on the Hill). The lyrics contain the lines: "The sky is blue on the hill / the birds sing, sing, sing to the ginkgo trees." In the fall of the year when this song was completed, the Keio University Baseball Team achieved an outstanding victory, winning all ten games in the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League. "Oka no Ue" has since become the victory song at the Waseda-Keio baseball games, as it perfectly captures the spirit of students standing shoulder to shoulder and celebrating victory.

Hiyoshi's Ginkgo-Lined Promenade at the Center of a Student Urban Legend

Rows of ginkgos stretch along the gentle slope from the entrance to Hiyoshi Campus leading up to the Hiyoshi Commemorative Hall. Dozens of ginkgos, trimmed in a conical shape as if reaching towards the sky, serve as the symbol of the campus. The trees were planted in 1935, a year after Hiyoshi Campus was established, making them almost 90 years old. Every year, these trees welcome new students making their way to the Hiyoshi Commemorative Hall for their entrance ceremony. In the fall, the campus is adorned with magnificent yellow foliage.

Many Keio students are likely familiar with the campus urban legend that claims if a student doesn't have a sweetheart by the time the ginkgo leaves fall during their first year, they won't find one for the remainder of their four years on campus. Of course, this is just an urban legend, and its origins are unknown, but it continues to be whispered among Keio students to this day.

Aging Gracefully Under Careful Stewardship

The ginkgo trees on campus have grown with the history of Keio University, and in recent years, tree surveys and maintenance work have been carried out to protect them. The rows of ginkgos on Hiyoshi campus are routinely inspected for tree fall hazards. The school entrusts skilled tree experts to carry out pruning work, taking necessary precautions such as observing a tree's response to pruning for a year before trimming others to ensure safety and health.

At Mita Campus, efforts are made to maintain a pleasant campus environment surrounded by many trees, including the large ginkgo tree. During the fall season, the school works vigorously to keep the campus clean to prevent accidents caused by slipping on wet leaves.

The Keio Girls Senior High School Alumni Association, adjacent to Mita Campus, derives its name "Ginnan no Kai" (Ginkgo Association) from the lyrics of the aforementioned school song "Oka no Ue," which refers to the ginkgo trees atop Mita Campus. One hopes that these iconic campus trees, cherished through the centuries by the students of Keio University, will continue to grow together with the school for years to come.

Keio University Academics

The Keio International Program is suitable for undergraduate students who wish to focus on studying in various academic fields in English. Fields include economics, business, politics, history, culture, area studies, and the global community. KIP students with advanced Japanese proficiency may also focus on undergraduate courses taught in Japanese, offered by the Keio University faculties that are open to exchange students. In addition, they may choose to take up to four Japanese language courses. The main purpose of KIP is for students to attend a wide range of Japanese Studies and/or International Studies Courses taught in English, and/or attend regular undergraduate courses taught in Japanese, rather than emphasizing the study of Japanese language.

The Japanese Language Program , offered by the Center for Japanese Studies, is for undergraduate and graduate students who would like to focus on Japanese language learning. The curriculum is designed to assist students in attaining the high level of Japanese proficiency required for research and other academic activities in specialized disciplines.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
