ATV & Trails

Keweenaw atv trails.

You’ve got a full fuel tank and your tire pressure is just right.  So which of the Keweenaw’s 160 miles of trail are you planning to check out?

There’s no better way to access the Keweenaw’s natural wonders, terrain, and history than by ATV or SxS. Glide along the coast of Lake Superior or ride through ghost towns hidden among the vast Keweenaw forestlands.  Trails on the peninsula run from Mass City in the south all the way to Copper Harbor in the north. Many of the trails use old railway grades that were built to transport copper ore and timber during the  Copper Country’s mining heyday. Most of our communities can be accessed by trail with plenty of opportunities for fuel stops, dining, and lodging.

So grab an ATV Map, buckle up, and read on for tips, recommendations, and resources to plan your off-road tour of the Copper Country.

LOCAL RECOMMENDATIONS

There are some experiences you just shouldn’t pass up.  Here are a few that our locals recommend:

  • High Rock Bay Photo Op :  Perhaps one of the most “Instagram-able” locations (that means “photo-worthy” in young-person speak) in the Keweenaw, riders should make the trip up to Copper Harbor and take the trail to High Rock Bay.  You’ll be rewarded with epic views of Lake Superior at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Seldom visited by most tourists, this breathtaking ride takes you along old logging trails and is well worth the effort.

Off Road vehicles entering High Rock on Lake Superior.

  • Get Out on the Big Lake :  Lake Superior is the world’s largest body of freshwater containing nearly 10% of Earth’s fresh surface water. In fact, it contains as much water as all the other great lakes combined…plus three more Lake Eries (and they call it a “great” lake…).  You can access the best of the great lakes by ORV and visit some pretty impressive sites like Fish Cove.
  • Visit a Ghost Town :  As you ride along our trails, you’ll pass through  quiet ruins of former mining towns  that churned out copper ore back in the 1800s and early 1900s. Much of the original stone and brick structures have been reclaimed by nature, but you can’t miss the towering smokestacks that mark forming mining activities like smelters.  If you choose to explore these areas, be very careful as the structures are almost completely unmaintained and unstable. Please also be mindful of private property rights, and do not trespass.
  • Sample the Local Brews : Whether it’s Michigan’s northernmost brewery, Brickside in Copper Harbor, or arguably Michigan’s oldest bar, Shute's 1890 Saloon of Calumet, the Keweenaw has a pretty impressive line-up of watering holes.   Enjoy responsibly.

PLANNING TIPS FOR YOUR KEWEENAW ATV EXPERIENCE

Plan, plan, and plan some more.

You can put a lot of miles on our ORV when traveling along the Keweenaw. With more than 160 miles of trail, it’s best to plan ahead and make sure you know where you can fuel up and  grab a bite to eat .  It can be a long walk to the nearest gas station.  As you drive north, you will encounter areas with little or no cell service, so do not rely on your phone to show for navigation.  Be sure to chart your course and bring a map. You can  download a Keweenaw ATV map  or  we can mail you one if you submit a request .

TRAIL CLOSURES AND UPDATES

Trails are periodically closed for repairs, safety, and commercial activity. Before you head out make sure to check with the  Michigan DNR  for updates on all current closures. The Keweenaw ATV Club will also post trail updates on  their Facebook page  and further details are available from  their website .

Due to the lack of available detours, some closures may be listed as ‘No Reroute Available’. Be prepared to trailer your equipment around these sections. Do not attempt to ride on closed trails, they have been barricaded off for the safety of the public. Always stay on signed trails. Remember, nowhere in Michigan can you ride on designated “M” or “US” highways. Be aware of where you are permitted to operate an ATV/ORV before you go. Each county has local ordinances that may allow ORV operation on select roadways. Before you ride on a roadway, check with the local sheriff’s office or a county office to verify roads open to ORV use.

GET YOUR PERMIT

Trails from Mass City to Calumet are State of Michigan DNR Rail-Trails and are multi-use.  That means other non-motorized users may be on the trail. Get your  Michigan DNR ATV license online  or use this map to find a  local retailer to purchase licenses and permits .  Doing so helps to provide financial resources to keep our trails in top shape.

HOW TO CROSS THE PORTAGE LAKE LIFT BRIDGE

The Portage Lake Lift Bridge is the only way (at least “by land”) to cross the Portage Canal from Houghton to Hancock.  You can trailer across the bridge, but it’s a lot more fun to ride your ORV over it! But you’ll need an escort if you choose to cross on your SxS or ATV.

The City of Houghton Police Department will give off-road vehicles escorts across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.  Please call 906-482-2121 from the intersection of Trail #3 and the Canal Road . You’ll be asked to sign a waiver and the officers will open the gate and allow you to go through the City of Houghton’s RV Park.

ATV Escort Times

Officers provide ATV escorts seven days a week, provided they are available, at the following times:

ATV’s and side-by-sides only. Sorry, no jeeps, pickups, full-size vehicles, converted 4X4s or dirt bikes. Minimum of 2 machines to be escorted.

Two SxS's follow trail through Keweenaw forest.

STAY ON THE TRAIL

The Keweenaw’s ATV trail system is built on state and privately owned land.  It’s through the trust and generosity of private landowners that we have the permission of crossing their property. It can be revoked at any time. STAY ON THE TRAIL, do not trespass, and practice responsible recreation as you ORV through Keweenaw forestland.

TRAILHEAD PARKING

If you’re hauling a trailer and need parking to access a trailhead public parking is available at the following locations:  Copper Harbor Marina, AmericInn of Calumet, The Ramada Inn of Hancock, and Kauppi’s Marina in Gay.

RENTALS & EQUIPMENT

Need to rent a ride?  Check out  Copper Country Rentals  in Calumet or  M&M Power Sports  in Hancock.

Outfitters & Equipment Rentals

Whether you’re hitting the slopes, trails, or water, you’ll find the Keweenaw’s outfitters and equipment rental shops are here to make sure you…

They rent ATVs onsite as well as snowmobiles, plus they run their own white water rafting trips all from the resort. If you’re looking for guided tour options, they offer those as well.

lake superior tours atv rental

IMPORTANT NOTE: Dirt bikes are not permitted at Northern Outdoors due to landowner restrictions on local area trails.

2. Glamis North Hot Springs (Niland CA)

Escape winter: hot springs, desert trails, plus Glamis Sand Dunes!

lake superior tours atv rental

If you’re looking to escape the snow and cold weather, then this is the perfect place.

With temperatures well north of 110 in the summer, this resort doesn’t even open until the Fall. It’s open from mid October – mid April.

lake superior tours atv rental

A full rental fleet of RZRs is available onsite with advanced online booking available. RZRs come preprogramed with GPS self guided tours to local landmarks, so you don’t get lost. Rates start at $435 for a 2 hour trip and go up from there.

Glamis North has well over 200 RV spaces with full hook ups. Like most campgrounds, they have standard sized camping sites, but they also offer super sized sites for big rigs or folks who simply want a bit more room.

They call these super sized campsites their “X sites” – X sites range from L to XXXL. Snob Hill has the largest sites (XXXL) at approx. 120′ x 55′ with views of the mountains and are perfect for catching the stunning sunsets.

lake superior tours atv rental

Cabins and cottages are also available for rent. Rentals range in size from studios to multi bedrooms / multi bath units that can accommodate larger groups.

Rentals vary in amenities, but most include a furnished kitchenette or kitchen, bathrooms, dining area, living room seating, TV and internet. Everything you need for a comfortable stay.

One thing you need to be aware of is that you do need to provide your own bedding and towels.

lake superior tours atv rental

Sassy’s Café, an onsite restaurant, is open for breakfast and dinner on Friday – Sunday and Holidays.

This ATV resort isn’t part of the Glamis Sand Dunes , but you can ride to the dunes from the resort, although it is a bit of a haul at 50+ miles.

lake superior tours atv rental

However, with all the great riding available in the surrounding desert, you may just decide to put Glamis on the backburner for another trip.

Roads and trails are extensive throughout the region, so you’ll have no difficulty finding great riding. Just pick a direction and head on out.

Bat caves, Red Canyon, historic miner cabins, old mangled railroad tracks and Glamis Sand Dunes offer plenty of riding adventure.

lake superior tours atv rental

After a day of hard riding, enjoy a relaxing soak in one of the 2 large mineral hot springs pools or 14 hot tubs. One great feature of these mineral rich hot springs is that they don’t have that strong sulfur smell like some other hot springs.

Glamis North Hot Springs

3. Ticaboo Lodge (North Lake Powell – Ticaboo UT)

Some of the best back country travel that Utah has to offer!

lake superior tours atv rental

This remote ATV vacation resort is located in the red sands of the Utah desert. Ticaboo Lodge is surrounded by BLM land with trails starting right next to the lodge, so you can ride directly from the lodge.

This is wide open desert with miles of county and BLM trails. You’ll find lots of off roading adventure – from hill top mesas to canyons and vast desert.

lake superior tours atv rental

They offer 2/4/6/8 hour rentals as well as guided tours. Rentals are done from the Adventure Center outfitter store, aka, Base Camp.

Rates start at $125 for 2 hours. Check rates

Technically it’s possible to off road year round at Ticaboo, but avoid the summers as it does get scorching hot.

Fall, from late September through early November, is about perfect.

lake superior tours atv rental

It does snow at Lake Powell, although it doesn’t stick around long. If you don’t mind the cold, bundle up for a winter ride when a light dusting of snow blankets the beautiful red hills and surrounding deserts.

Ticaboo Lodge hosted it’s first off road Rally in October 2019 and it’s still going strong.

Rally in Bullfrog Valley

lake superior tours atv rental

But ATVing isn’t all this lodge has to offer. Located just 10 miles from the shores of Lake Powell, Ticaboo is also the perfect location for planning some big lake adventure. The lodge rents party barges, ski boats, fishing boats, sea doos, wake boards, skis, tubes, SUPs and kayaks.

The surrounding red rocks canyons also provide ample opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, camping, photography, canyoneering, rock hounding and discovering historic petroglyphs.

Ticaboo Lodge

4. High Country Lodge (Big Horn Mountains – Lovell WY)

This is wide open nature – Wyoming at it’s best!

lake superior tours atv rental

I love Wyoming , so it was inevitable that I would have to include a Wyoming destination. During the summer season, tourists flood the Tetons and Yellowstone National Park, but the Big Horn Mountains don’t have that crazy tourist vibe.

The mountains still get a fair amount of use, but it’s a big area, so it never really seems busy.

There aren’t a lot of amenities, but that actually works in it’s favor!

Less amenities = less crowds!

lake superior tours atv rental

There are three main places to stay the night, all with their own restaurants – High Country Lodge, Elk View Inn and Bear Lodge Resort.

Of these three, High Country Lodge offers up the best overall experience – better location, better rooms, better food. (although I had a pretty respectable cheeseburger at Bear Lodge Resort on my last adventure)

ATV Resorts High Country Lodge

High Country Lodge is tucked away in the mountains with the road accessible by car from about mid May to the end of November. The resort can arrange a pick up for you when the roads are closed or you can snowmobile to the lodge.

This area gets epic snow and also offers up world class snowmobiling, so keep that in mind for future adventures.

lake superior tours atv rental

High Country Lodge recently started offering daily SxS rentals. Their rental fleet consists of two, 2 person Polaris RZR 900s, a 2 person and a 6 passenger Yahama Viking.

  • 2 passenger vehicles: $300 per day
  • 3 passenger Viking: $350 per day
  • 6 passenger Viking: $400 per day

If you bring your own ATV, the Big Horn area offers up a world of off roading possibilities. The Elk View Inn (also a full full service ATV resort) is less than 20 minutes away and rents ATVs and SxS for half and full days.

5. Ramada by Wyndam (Hancock MI)

Yooper ATV paradise with hundreds of miles of coastline!

lake superior tours atv rental

Featuring a beautiful location directly on the waterfront in Hancock MI right next to the bridge, this convenient location makes it an excellent jumping off point for exploring the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Most people probably don’t think of Ramada Hotels as an ATV resort, but this one checks all the boxes.

It offers up all the amenities you would expect from a Ramada – airport shuttle, complementary breakfast, indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, laundry facilities, on site restaurant and lounge, combined with convenient ATV rentals and excellent trail access.

lake superior tours atv rental

Plus, if you don’t want to eat on site, the central location also makes it easy to get around town to experience the local restaurants.

There is also an ATV/UTV rental shop directly across the street if you’d like to set up your own rental: MM Power Sports

The Upper Michigan Peninsula boasts some of the best ATVing in the US and the Keweenaw Peninsula is no exception. Renowned for it’s rugged remoteness and miles of Lake Superior coastline, the peninsula extends 125 miles.

Copper Harbor, Keweenaw Peninsula

There is an ORV route that starts next door from the Ramada Hotel. The trail initially takes you on a paved sidewalk through town where it connects with the off roading trail.

This trail is a combination of the Hancock-Calumet section and the Keweenaw section for a combined 64 miles (one way).

This ATV trail runs through the middle of the peninsula, goes all the way up to Copper Harbor and ends with a beautiful overlook of Lake Superior. Most of this trail is a converted railroad route with some hard packed dirt/rock sections. It’s primarily forested with some scenic Lake Superior views.

Michigan in Fall

In the Copper Harbor area, some local ATV clubs have put together an additional 66 miles of club sponsored trails. These club trails are on private land and most restrict unlicensed motorcycles due to land owner requests.

This route has easy access to gas, food and overnight accommodations if desired.

Check out the maps, see a few pictures of the route, plus there is also a link to a pdf that will open up a larger view of the map sections:

lake superior tours atv rental

Across the bridge in Houghton MI, you can also travel south on the Bill Nichols ORV Route , a 40 mile off roading route that travels south through the Keweenaw pennisula.

It is illegal to drive your ATV across the bridge without a police escort, but these towns are very ATV friendly, so they make it easy to set up an escort.

Officers will provide ATV/UTV escorts seven days a week, provided they are not on a call, at these times:

6. Mystic Hills Hideaway (Deadwood SD)

Off roading is a way of life in the hills!

lake superior tours atv rental

Located just outside of Deadwood SD, this year round ATV resort has everything you need to easily plan your next ATV adventure – ATV/UTV rentals, guided tours, cabins, a campground and an on-site restaurant.

You can just hop on your ATV and go, Mystic Hills Hideaway has direct trail access into the Black Hills National Forest. Plus, they also rent snowmobiles making this a fun winter destination.

lake superior tours atv rental

Tucked into the hills of South Dakota, the town of Deadwood is a town full of American history and well worth a visit. Deadwood is an old gold rush town established in 1876 which has done an excellent job of preserving it’s western vibe and history.

The main street still has some of its original brick and wood facades which now house small gambling establishments, hotels and restaurants.

lake superior tours atv rental

But even if you don’t gamble or ATV, this part of the country is full of natural beauty and wildlife and well worth a visit.

The Black Hills National Forest is the perfect destination for your next ATV trip.

There are over 700 miles of OHV trails, some of which connect to an additional 500 miles of forest service roads open to both OHVs and other vehicles.

lake superior tours atv rental

There are trails for all skill sets, loop routes and 21 designated motorized trailheads for easy access.

Check out all these trails: Black Hills National Forest ATV Trails (US Forest Website)

7. Harpole’s Heartland Lodge (Nebo, IL)

Midwest outdoor destination resort!

lake superior tours atv rental

Located in the rolling hills of Illinois, this resort has a lot to offer in addition to ATVing – a pistol range, hunting, fishing ponds, horse riding, Morel Mushroom hunting, a sporting clay course and searching for naturally shed deer antlers.

They also offer home-cooked meals plus ATV and RZR rentals which make it super easy to get out of town and onto the trails.

lake superior tours atv rental

There are two ATV parks with a variety of terrain and trails including the advanced terrain of the Timbers area which is open to skilled UTV riders only (no ATVs allowed).

The original ATV park is now connected to a whole new section of riding opportunities in what is called the new ATV park. Not only are the riding areas connected, but the trails also connect all the lodging options.

lake superior tours atv rental

This ATV resort has some pretty upscale lodging options. They have three large lodges that can accommodate 1 – 28 guests.  There are also four cabins available for smaller groups of 1 – 4 people. You can book a whole lodge or cabin for a group, but single room rentals are also available.

The older park section offers more challenging riding including the Timbers area, but outside of this area there are some beginner level trails.

The new section includes riding for all skill levels with a more open riding area and another area with some scenic views of the Mississippi river bottoms.

lake superior tours atv rental

With about 60 miles of OHV trails divided almost evenly between the two separate riding areas, you’ll find plenty of trails to keep you busy. There’s even some mud holes for riders who like to mix it up. Most trails are wide enough for UTVs/SxS.

Trail Map Of the ATV Parks

The two ATV parks are open almost year round with some short seasonal closures to accommodate hunting season.

Heartland Resort is also a full service hunting resort offering outfitting and guides. Whitetail Deer, quail, pheasant, turkey and waterfowl are plentiful in this region, so this resort is well situated to offer an excellent hunting opportunity.

Harpole’s Heartland Lodge

8. Twin Hollow Campground & Cabins (Gilbert WV)

Ultimate off roading destination on the Hatfield McCoy Trail System!

lake superior tours atv rental

Put this one on your bucket list.

Twin Hollow is one of the best ATV vacation resorts in the country, serving one of the best off-roading trail systems in the US – the Hatfield McCoy Trail.

In addition to 11 cabins, they also have a campground with full hookups. They also offer ATV/SxS rentals, trail guides and a BBQ restaurant on-site.

lake superior tours atv rental

After a rough day on the trail, what could be better than a hot shower and a comfortable bed? Rent one of their fully equipped cabins for an easy comfortable stay.

The cabins are smallish and rustic, but they have everything you need for a great stay – heat, a fully outfitted kitchen, linens, Direct TV, a charcoal grill, comfy beds and your own bathroom. They also have plenty of parking for your trailer and toys.

lake superior tours atv rental

The Hatfield McCoy Trails have 700 miles of professionally maintained trails spread across 8 towns (soon to be 9). The 8 sections each have their own name, rules, amenities and trail difficulty breakdown.

Check Out: Trail Difficulty By Section

Twin Hollows offers direct access to 3 sections of this trail system: The Rock House, Devil Anse and Buffalo Mountain Trail System. This means you can drive right from the resort to 300 miles of ATV trails without having to trailer.

The remaining sections are a short trailer haul away allowing you complete access to all the Hatfield McCoy Trails.

Check out the Appalachian ATVenture Festival, a 5 day ATV event held on the Hatfield McCoy Trails to help support a summer feeding program for WV children in need.

9. Saratoga Hot Springs Resort (Saratoga WY)

High end luxury resort with a spa & natural mineral hot springs !

lake superior tours atv rental

This resort offers deluxe amenities in wild Wyoming. With a full service spa, natural mineral hot springs and an on-site pub/brewery with an outdoor Biergarten, this is definitely not your typical roughing it ATV resort.

Saratoga Hot Springs Resort is located close to Wyoming Highway 130 which is part of the Snowy Range Scenic Byway. This southern Wyoming scenic road includes the 29 miles of road that passes through the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest.

lake superior tours atv rental

This road is all Wyoming – remote, uncrowded, sharp mountain peaks, rugged wilderness. Harsh, but beautiful. The scenic byway closes for the winter in mid November, but the resort is open year round and can be accessed by other main roads.

lake superior tours atv rental

Rent an ATV and explore the miles of trails available in the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. There are plenty of ATV trails and dirt roads available for all skill sets. The front desk has maps available to get you on your way.

lake superior tours atv rental

But ATVing is just one of the many fun activities available at this resort, they also offer golf, trout fishing, horse back riding, river floats, hiking, mountain biking, Jeep adventures, scenic drives, wildlife and bird watching.

As a life long resident of Duluth, I thought I had tried everything Duluth had to offer. That is, until I experienced the serene beauty of Duluth's shoreline from my "Time Out" sailing adventure. It was fabulous! And I was like a little kid again when Captain Jake let me take the wheel while we sailed under the famous Duluth Ariel Lift Bridge with hundreds of "fans" waving at us as we passed through the boat canal. I was in 7th heaven!

Tom S

Gracious hosts with immense knowledge of Lake Superior. Their years of experience is obvious as they always seem to know the best place to go depending on the conditions. Each day was a new adventure with beautiful islands and deserted beaches to choose from for our next destination. Jake and Kelly sail the boat with skill and ease, never missing a chance to share the history of places you cruise by. They happily handed over the wheel and ropes to allow us the full experience of sailing. Our trip withTime Out will never be forgotten and we hope to return for another trip soon.

Dom & Jenny

Sailing with Time Out is a wonderful experience. We sailed the Apostle Islands with them and had an unforgettable time. They are very knowledgeable, down to earth and were so accommodating, ensuring that we were able to see and explore all the wonderful things Lake Superior has to offer.

Atv adventures in cook county mn.

Experiencing the  Superior National Forest  with an ATV can be a great way to reach some of the more remote areas of the region. Please respect both private and public lands. Stay on the designated trails and areas to ensure ATV usage in the future.

Find GeoPDF maps for ATV/OHV friendly roads in Cook County by using the  Avenza Maps  app on your cellular device. Download the Cook County ATV/OHV map  or stop by the Visitor Center in Grand Marais for a copy.

Suggested routes from the  Cook County atv Club

Timber Frear Loop (A)  –  Something for everyone! Approximately 25 miles of old railroad grade with some rough terrain, mud puddles and a couple of gravel pits to play in. Lovely places to stop along the meandering Cross River and Timber Frear area lakes.

  • To get there:  From Tofte,  turn off Highway 61 onto the Sawbill Trail. Head north for about 14.5 miles. Turn left onto Four Mile Grade (Forest Road 170). Travel about 2 miles to Whitefish Lake Road. The gravel pit there has plenty of room for parking and unloading trailers—and even for self-contained campers, if visitors want to stay overnight.
  • From Schroeder,  turn off Highway 61 to the Temperance River Road (Forest Road 343). Drive 4 miles to the 600 Road (Forest Road 166). Drive about 1 mile to Forest Road 346 and then 5.5 miles for Four Mile Grade (Forest Road 170). Travel about 2 miles to the gravel pit near the end of Whitefish Lake Road.

Pancore-Rice Lake Loop (B)  –  This scenic loop is an approximately 13 mile changing path of wider forest road to close-in riding experiences, with a mix of deciduous and evergreens. Lots of nice water views with two crossings of the Poplar River. Maintained by the Cook County ATV Club, this is also a favorite of mountain bikers.

  • To get there:  From Lutsen:  Take the Caribou Trail to the Clara Lake Road turnoff (about 7 miles). Go another 4 miles to the start of the Rice Lake/Pancore Loop, just opposite the turnoff to the Clara Lake campground. A good starting spot is the North Shore State Trail parking lot about six miles up the Caribou Trail. Unload there and ride the Caribou Trail for about 1 mile to the Clara Lake Road.
  • From Tofte:  Take the Sawbill Trail to the Grade Road turnoff and head east about 2 miles, crossing over the Temperance River and in about a half mile, turn right onto the Rice Lake Road.

Grand Marais to Mid-Gunflint Trail (C)  –  A pleasurable 70-mile there-and-back ride starting right from downtown Grand Marais! This route uses some paved county roads, some scenic gravel roads (Meridian, Pine Mountain, South Brule and Lima Grade Roads) and a bit of snowmobile trail paralleling the historic Gunflint Trail. Consider dining at Cook County ATV Club business supporters along the way: Skyport Lodge, Trail Center, and Hungry Jack Lodge.

  • To get there:  Park your trailer and ride your wheeler! You can ride from your lodging in the core downtown area (ATVs not allowed on Highway 61), but hotels such as Aspen Lodge and Best Western have parking and are across the highway from streets leading to this route. There is also parking in the city’s municipal parking lot off Broadway Avenue or on Artist’s Point.

Hovland Woods from South Brule (D)  –  After trailering up the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway, park at the South Brule parking lot and ride minimum maintenance (AKA rocky and muddy!) forest roads to the stunning Hovland Woods ATV Trail, a scenic jaunt through a hardwood forest—the ONLY ATV trail in the state that passes through a Minnesota Scientific and Natural Area (SNA).

  • To get there :  From Grand Marais:  Trailer approximately 17 miles up the Gunflint Trail. Just after the South Brule bridge is a parking area with plenty of room on the right. Unload and start off from Blueberry Road for the 21-mile ride to Hovland Woods.
  • Or, from Hovland:  Trailer approximately 8 miles up the Arrowhead Trail. Turn left onto Irish Creek Road. Find the Hovland Woods Trailhead in approximately 1.2 miles.

Hovland Woods from Grand Marais  –  This approximately 75-mile round trip takes you from downtown Grand Marais via a variety of county and forest roads to the one-of-a-kind Hovland Woods ATV Trail, the ONLY Scientific and Natural Area in Minnesota with an ATV trail. This is a truly multiple use trail – the ATV grant-in-aid trail is shared with the Superior Hiking Trail, mountain bikers, horse, and in the winter, snowmobilers and mushers.

  • To get there:  Park your trailer, unload and ride! You can ride from your lodging in the core downtown area, from hotels such as Aspen Lodge and Best Western. There is also parking in the city’s municipal parking lot off Broadway Avenue or on Artist’s Point.

These are suggested routes, enjoyed by  the local ATV Club . There are many other forest roads available for riding, as you can see on the overall map. Feel free to get out and explore if you wish, just watch for “private property” and “No motorized traffic except snowmobiles” signs.

ALMOST all county roads are open to Class 1 ATVs, except for a portion of the upper Gunflint Trail. All roads (except Highway 61) are open to Class 2 ATVs (side-by-side machines).

One important requirement for riding Cook County roads is you MUST have a rear-view mirror on your machine. And to follow state statutes and to be safe, ride with headlights ON at all times.

Here are some of the most common questions asked about the UTV tours at Lake Lure Outdoor.

How long does the UTV tour last?

It takes at least one hour to complete the course.

Who can participate?

Our UTV course was designed to accommodate a wide variety of participants, ages 4 and up. All participants should be in good physical condition and be prepared for a bumpy adventure. Animals are not permitted on tours and cannot be left unattended on CRF property, so please make other arrangements for those loveable pets while you play.

What about non-participants?

Due to the nature of our mountainous park, non-participants are unable to watch UTV guests beyond the initial gear-up / practice area. Non-Participants are welcome to enjoy our relaxing river deck (perfect for picnics) or take a short drive down the road to explore the many shops, restaurants, hiking trails and entertainment options nearby. Animals are not permitted on tours and cannot be left unattended on CRF property, so please make other arrangements for those loveable pets while you play.

Are reservations required?

Advance reservations are highly recommended. Each tour has a limited number of spots available, so we cannot guarantee a spot for your party without a reservation. You can make a reservation online or by calling us at 828-625-4500. If you do not make an advance reservation, we will do everything we can to work you into a tour, but we cannot guarantee availability.

Can I bring my phone/camera?

Yes, you may capture your memories with your phone/camera at your own risk. If you’re worried about dropping it, we sell universally sized silicone phone holders for $8 and rent GoPro’s for $30.
