The different nib strengths explained

F, B, M - these are just a few examples of abbreviations that we use to designate our LAMY nibs. They describe nib thickness - how wide the stroke of the fountain pen is on the paper. Exceptions are the nibs with the designations A and LH - these are specially designed for beginners and left-handers and tailored to their particular requirements.

LAMY Nibs

What are you looking for?

Lamy nib guide.

The perfect nib for every style of writing

Fine, medium, broad? Oblique or straight? When it comes to nibs there are a number of choices and with good reason: every person's handwriting is different! Lamy offers the perfect nib for every style of writing and every preference. Discover how to find the right one for you in our Lamy Guide.

In principle you can combine your favourite Lamy Fountain pen with any Lamy nib to create your perfect writing instrument. The LAMY 2000 is an exception to this rule as it has its own special nib. Please ask your trusted Lamy retailer to swap your nib for you, particularly in the case of sensitive gold or specialist nibs.

Entry-level nibs

lamy safari replacement nibs

The beginner's nib from Lamy is the perfect choice for early writers: it's particularly robust and is equipped with a spherical writing tip. This enables it to glide effortlessly over the paper and promotes a relaxed grip. Discover all fountain pens

All-round nib

lamy safari replacement nibs

M nib (Z 50)

This nib suits almost everyone: the M nib from Lamy is an all-rounder suitable for most scripts and writing styles. This is why we equip our fountain pens with an M nib as standard. The secret is its rounded tip: no sticking, no scratching and a line that is neither too thick nor too thin. Discover all fountain pens

Left-handed nib

lamy safari replacement nibs

LH nib (Z 50)

Especially for left-handed writers: the LH nib has the same properties as the M nib – with a small yet significant difference: it is slightly oblique making it ideal for left-handed writers who frequently tilt their hand when writing. Discover all fountain pens

Individual nibs

lamy safari replacement nibs

Fine and broad nibs: EF, F, B, BB

Writers with a straight grip will feel particularly at ease with these nibs: straight nibs are available from Lamy in sizes "extra fine" (EF), "fine" (F), "broad" (B) and "extra broad" (BB).  Tip: when choosing the correct nib width the important thing is the size of your own handwriting: the smaller your script, the finer the nib should be. A larger script on the other hand will generally look better with a broad nib. (Z 50, Z 52, Z 53, Z 55, Z 56, Z 57, 2000-nib) Discover all fountain pens

lamy safari replacement nibs

Oblique nibs: OM, OB, OBB

Anyone who tends towards a slanted grip when writing should try out one of these nibs: "left oblique medium" (OM), "left oblique broad" (OB) and "left oblique extra broad" (OBB). These nibs are ideal for anyone seeking to "balance out" a slanted grip, or writers who value the variations in stroke arising from the particular cut of these nibs. The width of the selected nib should be matched to the size of the script here, too. (Z 55, Z 56, Z 57, 2000-nib)  Discover all fountain pens

lamy safari replacement nibs

Calligraphy nibs (Z50): 1.1 mm / 1.5 mm / 1.9 mm

Calligraphy nibs are also known as cursive or italic nibs. Rather than having an iridium ball, they have a straight, flat tip. This permits the writer to create a script with different stroke weights – perfect for beautiful penmanship. Discover all fountain pens

Premium nib

lamy safari replacement nibs

Whether for writing comfort or good looks: a gold nib always makes the difference. In high-quality writing implements it contributes to creating a refined and harmonious overall look. The 14 carat bicolour gold nibs from Lamy are part platinised and ensure a particularly harmonious and rounded script.  (Z 55, Z 56, Z 57, 2000-Feder) Discover all fountain pens

Special nibs

lamy safari replacement nibs

Gold nib – LAMY imporium (Z 57)

The 14 carat gold nib from the LAMY imporium series has a sophisticated black and gold bicolour finish. It has a striking design with no breather hole and has a PVD finish. This means that the pen provides an extraordinarily soft feel when writing.  Discover the LAMY imporium

lamy safari replacement nibs

Gold nib – LAMY 2000

Striking shape, 14 carat gold and a silver coloured platinum finish: the nib of the LAMY 2000 is as unique as the pen itself. Its tip is straight and creates a soft, harmonious script. This specialist nib is only suitable for the LAMY 2000 series. Discover the LAMY 2000

lamy safari replacement nibs

Stainless steel nib – LAMY Lx (Z 52)

The black stainless steel nib for the LAMY Lx series is a stylish upgrade to your writing implement. To achieve its sophisticated look it is polished, PVD coated and laser etched. It is available in sizes "medium" (M), "broad" (B), "extra-fine" (EF) and "fine" (F). Discover the LAMY Lx

lamy safari replacement nibs

Stainless steel nib – LAMY aion (Z 53)

A uniquely curved contour is the characteristic feature of the nib from the Lamy aion series. Its unconventional shape provides an expressive accent for your Lamy writing instrument. The nib is polished and gives a soft feel when writing. Discover the LAMY aion

LAMY studio

The special elegance of the LAMY studio demonstrates just how close design and art can be. The propeller-shaped clip accents the pen’s innovative form.

What’s wrong with my Safari Broad nib?

By redryder September 19, 2022 in Lamy

Recommended Posts

NOS (New Old Stock)

I bought a broad nib online and swapped it with a fine nib on my Lamy Safari. I checked twice that I installed the nib correctly.

It seems to write very dry and I need to exert pressure to get ink down onto the paper. See the photo I took.

Is there anything I can do to improve the ink flow? I’m using Iroshizoku ink already.

lamy safari replacement nibs

Looks like the tines could be too tight. Is it writing smoothly, or kind of scratchy?

These Lamy nibs are very inconsistent...and most of the time shipped with very poor packaging so that can play a part too (my stationer receives them in bulk, in a simple plastic bag, not sure that's common).

Rare

I have a Lamy B with a line width of 0.60 mm and it is very wet. Line widths range from 0.60 to 0.75 mm. By any measure they should be very wet. I'm sending you a photo so you can see how the tines are spaced. If that doesn't solve the problem, then you should remove the feed and check for clogged channels. Also check that the converter or cartridge is working properly.

Lamy B nib.jpg

My Safari Broad is a wet writer, with a line width of around 0.7mm. No issues with it.

I agree with the assessment of @Lithium466 .

I have about a dozen Safari/Al-Star/Lx pens in my collection, and two of them were very dry writers.  I finally bit the bullet and learned how to adjust nibs for flow (I recommend heartily part 1 of the 3-part series on YouTube by Matt from the Pen Habit, search on "matt pen habit ink flow" ) and those two problem pens now write perfectly.

My reference tutorial is Matt's. It has worked for me on several nibs, including a Lamy medium. The nice thing about Lamy nibs is that they are very easy to adjust and allow for corrections. When I opened the tines, I left a very large gap and following Matt's instructions, I reduced it a bit.

I began practicing flow adjustment on a batch of ultra-cheap Jinhao pens.  But a Lamy Safari is not a huge risk since you can't ruin the pen itself - the nibs are replaceable - and Lamy nibs are not very expensive on the scale of fountain pen purchases, so even if you ruin the nib you haven't lost a lot of money.  Plus, this type of adjustment is not likely to seriously damage the nib if you work carefully and gradually.

Antique

Almost all of my Lamy nibs were wet and smooth from the box. Sorry that to read that some of you have had bad experiences with some nibs. Have you complain to the factory or distributors of the pens? I think that  it can be useful for Lamy to know that they are making some bad nibs  and take some  actions to solve the problems.

From what I have read on a German forum, Lamy's customer service is quite good.

But in many cases these drawbacks are easily remedied with a small and simple adjustment. It's not worth sending the pen in to have the tines slightly separated. As for improvements, about two years ago, they started to do laser cutting of the channel. The nibs are recognisable by the fact that they no longer have a burn next to the breathing hole. At the moment I only have one of that type (good out of box), but I'm waiting for two new nibs, an EF and an F.

Did you flush it through when you 1st got the pen? or have you flushed it recently. I have a pen with a fine nib that that looks like the obvious solution try cleaning it through with luke warm water and flush it multiple times to get an gunk/ residue out of it.

Thanks for the photo! The tines on my broad nib are much closer together, I do not see that separation at all. They are touching.

Is there anyway I can spread them apart to look like yours?

I followed the "The Pen Habit" tutorial and found it very useful. I opened the tines of a medium nib by pressing them against a glass table. In my case, it took about 8 seconds, without too much force, and they opened wide. The result was very good for writing on Rhodia, but the flow was excessive on lower quality papers, so I closed the nibs a bit following the scissors technique that Matt Armstrong explains in the video. The tines were a bit misaligned, the solution is in the same tutorial. I have never handled a nib as malleable as the Lamy one. There is also a technique that uses brass sheets, but I have no experience with it.

The B nib shown in the photo is out of box, not fixed.

For Lamy nibs, I prefer the brass sheets method of widening the tines, but do go slowly. Also, remember that you still need a slight taper in the slit from the breather hole to the tip in order for capillary action to work best. In short, by inserting two brass sheets between the tines and using those to gently widen the slit, you can get good results without risking "springing" the nib. However, it's easy to splay or twist the tines if you aren't careful, and then you have quite the job ahead of you to untwist them (the hardest adjustment I've encountered personally without grinding). You'll also want to do a tine alignment after opening the tines, as they will often get a little out of alignment. For opening the tines on a Lamy nib, I prefer to take the nib off the feed, use the brass sheets method, align the tines, and then remount the nib onto the feed. At the end, make sure that the feed is touching the nib along the underside without a gap, and that the tines are aligned in their final position after mounting the nib on the feed. Then you're good to go.

  16. Can I replace a Lamy Safari nib with another brand nib?

I've no experience with this personally, but a few reviews (like this one) of the Hero 359 claim its nibs are interchangeable with the Safari's. I can personally confirm that the nibs on the Jinhao 599/Jinhao Safari knock-off (the metal version with Lamy-like nibs, not the 599A or 599C with more traditional nibs) do not fit on the Safari's feed.
