Chiang Mai Tours & Trips

Chiang Mai, a city located in the mountains of Northern Thailand , is a popular stop among travellers on their way to touring Southeast Asia . It is a city of contrasts, where the old town is filled with Buddhist temples, while the modern part of the city boats countless restaurants, cafes and shops. Chiang Mai is also a great starting point for exploring trekking routes going into the nearby mountains that will reveal tribal villages and ancient temples.

Northern Thailand: Hilltribes & Villages

This tour was the best week I have had in my entire life. No kidding, hands down! You start in the crazy fast-paced capital Bangkok and head on a sleeper train (don't worry, they are actually pretty comfortable and nice to sleep on) up to Chiang Mai which, for me, is the best place in Thailand. Here you can do a wealth of activities which I have actually compiled in my blog post here [external link removed in moderation] The main point of this tour is the trek, which is completely insane but brilliant! The friendships and bonds you make with people because of what you experience together is something that will stay with me for a very long time. Waking up to views of the jungle with home cooked, proper Thai food, which is some of the tastiest stuff you will ever eat! Pure magic, and for the price tag, it is a no-brainer! Keep tracking!

It was a far out experience indeed! This tour is full of exciting places visited and offered a variety in the itinerary. To add icing on the cake, we were so pleased with our tour guide, Suchin Temo who was an active, up to date, informative and fun person to be around with, to say the least. He's innovative and caring and his experience and mastery of his job is what is exemplified the whole time we were with him. We won’t mind booking another tour with him as our guide as we never had a dull moment with him at all. Our driver was an added bonus as he was an expert on the area as well as a safe chauffeur too. Overall it was an AAAAAAA+++++++ Experience! We are among the satisfied customers of Intrepid!

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days Tour

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days

We just returned from this amazing trip! We feel like we got to see so many things. Our accommodations were great, our tour guides were super nice and very helpful with anything we needed or any questions we had. Ate many delicious meals and did a ton of shopping. Every day was a new adventure. From the long boat ride to the temples and then over to Phuket which is simply stunning. Our full day boat trip snorkeling above beautiful coral reefs with tropical fish in beautiful green waters. Just incredible!! Pack very lightweight clothing, it's hot and you'll only get to wear things once. Totally safe to walk everywhere and the TukTuk's are readily available at a good price.

Thailand Highlights 10-Day Package Tour

Thailand Highlights 10-Day Package

We were hesitant to say the least about planning a trip halfway around the world with a tour company we did not know. All I can say is that our expectations were exceeded and then some. Every aspect of our trip was planned out for us and taken care of, either before our arrival, or right there on site as our requests were sometimes last minute i.e. a trip to a bank for cash exchanges; a visit to a reputable Tailor for some handmade suits and Kimonos; an afterhours visit to experience China Town; or a Thai massage. All with a personal guide that spoke the language and walked us through every turn. Our experiences at the Floating Market, the Train Market, the Grand Palace, the Pearl Factory, and Phuket Island were FANTASTIC! We were met at the airport by the most wonderful guide(s) and delivered right to our hotel(s) in airconditioned vans. We had exceptional personal guides at each location (Pond at Bangkok, Pim at Chiang Mai, and Ben at Phuket). Every accommodation was excellent with a spectacular breakfast each day. If you can afford the 5 star upgrade I think it would be worthwhile, but definitely not necessary. We will absolutely trust another vacation adventure to TOURRADAR. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Bangkok and Golden Triangle, Small Group Tour Tour

Bangkok and Golden Triangle, Small Group Tour

Great tour but the Bangkok to Chiang Mai journey could have been planned much better. You are told to take an early flight so we had to leave the hotel at 5am. They they collect you and transfer you to the hotel by around 10.30am. You can't check in until 3pm and the tour doesn't begin again until 1.30pm so you just have to wait in the lobby for 3 hours. We were going to book a flight that arrives at 11.15am but was told that it was too late; why? Luckily our tour guide and driver brought the afternoon tour forward to 12.40pm. It would have been better to charge slightly more and include the flight and have everyone arrive at around 12 Noon. Drop off the bags at the hotel and then go on the afternoon tour. Alternatively, allow the people to arrive on the 11.15 flight. That is still two hours prior to the afternoon activities.

Hill Tribes of Northern Thailand: Environmental Conservation, Education, and Elephant Trekking

GIVE Thailand gave me the opportunity to travel to the other side of the world in an ethical manner. While I got to experience the beautiful views and explore the vast nature, I also got to support the local communities through volunteer projects and connecting with the townspeople. My favorite volunteer project was actually a mini project we did in a mountain tribe village. There, the villagers let us know what they would like help with and in this case it was collecting rocks so that they could repair their water pipe. I really appreciated that the place we visited was in control of our participation because it allowed for us to offer real help rather than assuming what they need.

What people love about Chiang Mai Tours

Fantastic trip ! I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Our guide spoke excellent English and was always explaining things to us, sharing information about plants or food or the history of the area and people. He had a great way of keeping the motivation and energy of the group high using laughter and fun. He’s just so good at his job. The local guides worked so hard for us as well carrying water and supplies and stepping stones if necessary. The host families were amazing preparing delicious foods and sharing their culture and customs. This is a really unique and challenging trip to take (from the perspective of opening your mind to a very different lifestyle). A few things to be aware of: you absolutely need proper water shoes or sandals as there’s a lot of river crossing and flip flops are too unstable, facilities in some places may be limited such as electricity, indoor plumbing or showers. Water may be boiled. The children in the villages are the best as they seem to really enjoy interacting with the tourists! Along with the introduction to traditional Thai cultural customs I got to make friends with a group of people of all ages who came from all over the world. So fun ! Just do it you won’t regret it !
I had an amazing time with G Adventures! The itinerary was perfect; there was a lot to do and see, but it wasn't overwhelming and there was a lot of free time provided. My guide, Prem, was one of the sweetest, loveliest people I've ever met! She is brilliant at her job, and brings so much enthusiasm to work. She is extremely knowledgeable, and was always willing to share her knowledge with the group. Miss her so much already!

Hinoki Land

Hinoki Land is a Japanese themed landscape and building compound in the remote northern Chiang Mai district of Chai Prakan. The site is dominated by a 4 level wooden building.

Hinoki Land

The main building is visually striking and makes for some nice photos. Newly opened, Hinoki Land will only increase in beauty as the gardens mature.

Hinoki Land is named after the Hinoki Cypress , also known as the Japanese Cypress ( Chamaecyparis obtuas ). As you might guess, this wood has been used for construction at Hinoki Land. The pine is also the basis of the owner’s wood product manufacturing and cosmetics business.

For Thai visitors, the main attraction here is renting traditional Japanese clothing and posing for photos. Currently there are no restaurants on site, but they have same wood products for sale (if you would like to bu a bed!), and also some handmade quilts and blankets.

Just a little further up the road in the town of Chai Prakan itself, we have sometimes stayed at these rice-field apartments:

Thailand is one of the most famous tourist countries in Southeast Asia but one of the destinations that's often overlooked in Thailand is Chiang Mai which is maybe because there is no beach in this city. However, Chiang Mai should be added in any bucket list because of its misty and evergreen mountains, colourful hill tribes, a variety of interesting activities, a paradise for shoppers with antiques, handicraft products and delicious cuisine.

Before covid this was part of the market after 6, but not now. It’s a walk along the beach front that only has a few stalls up till you arrive at the real part of the market. It’s a lot bigger than the one in Chewang and worth a couple of hours looking around. They sell lots of different things other than food. It is good to try different food and there’s plenty to try here. After buying your food from the many food stalls you can eat at the many tables that are put out by the people selling the drinks and cocktails for 100 Bart’s. There is no Sunday market in Lamai now so if you like a good market this is the one to go to. Read more Written March 7, 2023

They are everywhere in Bangkok but here is the tip which is going to save your skin: Dont do any program in this city without pré booking online, or group tours. My family was scamed with táxi and unbelievable expensive tickets, when getting there ( in a civilized word, there would be fixed rate at entrance?) Not there, leaving me without any money to spend at market...they have an agreement with táxi drivers who bring turist as baits and will take all your money when you get at hotel! This is not a market at all but a tour of cheap souvenir shops all selling the same thing for an outrageous price of $43 per person. The canal water is very polluted and I was thinking that if I don't get malaria in this place it will be a miracle. The boats have these very, very loud motors with smelly exhaust. My eyes were burning from all the smog. Imagine a tour where the guide/driver of the boat does not speak a word of English. What a total waste of time, I wish I had read reviews about this place, I was blaming myself for not doing so. I will know better next time. So please, try to pass on this pathetic attraction to avoid a total disappointment!!! Read more Written December 16, 2022

First of all we thought that the return fare is reasonable and rather cheap. It seems to us the driver was honest but after arriving the area we were surprised that he took us far awya from real place to a distance pier. A boat manager came and asked for 2000 bahts per person, we were three so he damanded 6000 bahts. Before arriving that place I got some ideas from trip advisor about scam, but I have become victim of this situation. Due to drivers Commission from boat agency he( driver) misleads us.We wanted to change our discission and wanted to leave the place. Driver was unhappy with this, then we asked him to take us at another adjacent pier.As we are not known about the real place he took us at another place to the next. The another agent demanded 2000 bahts for a whole boat for 3 persons. We are happy at that price though it is rather high from actual place. The weather was hot, the narrow canals were full of dirt and the shops were almost closed.we concluded our trip for one hour. It was an unpleasant journey with family.I will not recommend anyone to go there by taxi cab rather suggest to go there by tour operators package. Read more Written May 9, 2022

Calls to rekindle 'red car' service in Chiang Mai

PUBLISHED : 14 May 2024 at 09:36

NEWSPAPER SECTION: Business

WRITER: Molpasorn Shoowong

The rot daeng ('red car') service is a popular form of local transport in Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai tourism operators are urging the local government to help revive the transport service provided by the province's iconic rot daeng ("red cars") as more passengers have switched to other forms of transport.

An online discussion saw a Facebook user post concerns about the future of rot daeng services in Chiang Mai as they are now facing fierce competition from ride-hailing services.

A unanimous number of netizens said they had experienced a poor level of service or had been overcharged by drivers of these vehicles in the past.

Punlop Saejew, president of the Tourism Council of Chiang Mai, said it was inevitable that rot daeng have been disrupted by ride-hailing services, which provide more convenience in terms of people being able to book them with a clear price provided ahead of departure.

The problem stemmed from cases that involved rot daeng being requested to travel somewhere, with no guarantee that the driver would be able to pick up new passengers on the way back. In such a case, the driver may have to raise the price for passengers in order to compensate for the higher fuel cost.

Mr Punlop said some drivers, therefore, chose to reject passengers or requested a higher fare.

He said the Department of Land Transport sets the ceiling price at 30 baht per ride, while only 100 of the red vehicles are still active in the city, compared to 1,000 registered in the system.

The 30-baht ceiling may need to be reconsidered to comply with today's living costs, fuel prices and changing tourism behaviour.

"Rot daeng is still an icon of Chiang Mai tourism, as many foreign tourists put it on their must-do list while visiting the province, the same way they want to ride a tuk tuk in Bangkok," he said.

Many hotels booked private tours for tourists by such vehicles to visit different spots in the city.

Therefore, the relevant authorities should help regulate this form of public transport, along with upgrading outdated transport regulations in the province.

Mr Punlop said it was good to see some of these vehicles being included in ride-hailing applications.

However, the government should still create more opportunities for drivers of these vehicles, along with allowing them to serve tourists from Chiang Mai's airport. They would earn income from local passengers who want a lower fare than a taxi or air-conditioned bus.

As the vehicles serve as non-regular public buses at present, the authority should consider allowing them to serve as public buses with regular routes.

In the long run, Mr Punlop said the efficient public transport network citywide is crucial for lifting tourism standards to those of other destinations such as Taiwan and Japan.

Although the city has seen an improvement in public buses, such as the new RTC City Bus which operates between the inner city and airport, it does not yet cover enough areas.

Without a long-term plan, traffic could deteriorate with higher accident rates, especially among foreign tourists who rent motorcycles.
