Diary of a Festival on Tour: WOMAD in the USA, 1993

WOMAD 1993

W ell, WOMAD came to the United States for the first time this past September, and I’m certain the country will never be the same. This was not the weekend-long cultural immersion party to which you may be accustomed, but nine single-day cultural dippings in cities across the country, all in the space of a mere 14 days. By the way— the U.S. is over 3,000 miles wide. It was a massive undertaking involving nine huge tractor-trailer trucks of equipment and 23 coaches for over 200 artists and crew. The idea was to convey as much of the WOMAD experience as possible in a third of the time.

WOMAD U.S.A. 1993 - Paul de Gooyer

Hi, I’m Paul De Gooyer. As the new label manager for Real World at Caroline Records, I’m their U.S. distributor, responsible for marketing the excellent recordings on the label to 220 million souls that inhabit this great, vast nation. For the tour, however, I was a mere cog in the WOMAD publicity machine. My mission was to secure as much publicity as possible for the seven Real World artists on the tour. This is my diary of the WOMAD Tour of the U.S. of A.

Monday September 6

Saratoga performing arts centre, saratoga, new york.

The day of the first ever U.S. WOMAD show starts at 4:30am for the production team. A squadron of trucks miraculously becomes a colourful city of tents showcasing crafts, technology and exotic food. A brisk morning gives way to a beautiful, breezy day as the two stages are set, banners are raised, and after years of waiting and months of pre-production, WOMAD U.S.A. is up and running.

I spend the early part of the show running around the site, making sure that journalists receive their credentials, but I pause long enough to see the Drummers of Burundi perform on stage 1. I had been told they were impressive, but I was truly unprepared for what I saw. Neither was the crowd— they went wild. No words can adequately describe the sheer power of the Drummers. They require no amplification. ‘Nuff said.

By mid-afternoon, press, radio and TV are swarming. We on the publicity team are frantic, shuttling artists from interview to interview all over the site. Any concern about the tour’s reception by the media evaporates; we can tell that they are enjoying WOMAD’s unique combination of intellectual and sensual stimulation.

Things taper off around 9pm and I have the chance to catch Peter Gabriel ’s set. His performance is inspired and inspiring and the set includes ‘Across The River’, a track originally from Music and Rhythm , the first WOMAD benefit album. The Drummers take the stage once again to end the show and the audience leaves smiling.

Later, Peter Gabriel , Sheila Chandra , Sinéad O’Connor , Ayub Ogada and Neil Finn from Crowded House appear on the syndicated radio show Rockin , answering questions about WOMAD, songwriting and other (sometimes trivial) matters from listeners all over the U.S. and Canada. The highlight of the show for me is an improvised performance of Ayub’s song ‘ Wa Winjigo Ero ’ with everyone joining in the chorus. Strange to think: there are ten million people listening to this intimate sing-along!

After  Rockin  Peter and Sinéad briefly drop into a fund raising party for the local chapter of Amnesty International. A great first day behind us, we board the coach for Pittsburgh at about 3am.

Wednesday September 8

Star lake ampitheater, pittsburgh, pennsylvania.

Beautiful weather again, and an enthusiastic crowd— they keep trying to sneak backstage. Geoffrey Oryema joins the tour and I make time to see his performance. Switching from acoustic guitar to lukeme (thumb piano) and accompanied only by guitar virtuoso Jean-Pierre Alarcen, Geoffrey captivates the audience. The material from his new record, Beat The Border , sounds great, even with pared-down arrangements.

Shortly after dark, Remmy Ongala plays on stage 2. The four guitarists in the band spin harmonic webs of sound over a tight rhythm section and everyone in the audience dances. Brilliant!

WOMAD U.S.A. 1993

FriDAY SeptEMBER 10

Buckeye lake music center, colombus, ohio.

Guess what— another beautiful day! This is the first venue that is not a manmade shed, just a stage set among gently rolling hills. WCBE radio interview Remmy live on air. The DJ asks the questions in English, Ayub translates into Swahili and Remmy answers in English. This is probably the first time many people in Ohio have heard Swahili, thanks to WOMAD.

Trísan play a riveting set on the stage. Their music is very dramatic live; even the CDs can’t capture the dynamic range of their performance. Lenny Kravitz joins the tour, adding 60s culture to the WOMAD melting pot.

WOMAD 1993

WOMAD: Giving the world back to the world

Looking back on the first ten years of the WOMAD organisation.

Sun, 21 June 92

Saturday September 11

World music theate, chicago, illinois.

I break down and have a smart drink. It doesn’t seem to make me smarter, but I solve a math problem that had been troubling me since 1978. Weird stuff.

I had only seen parts of Sheila Chandra ’s performance to this point, but here I make a point of seeing the whole thing. Once again, words can’t do justice to the performance. Her music is delivered acappella and to pre-recorded drones. The crowd, which might normally be milling about or talking, sits completely still. Many of them didn’t even know who Sheila was when she came on stage; when her set is over they give her a standing ovation.

The weather, co-operative to this point, treats us to a spectacular thunderstorm. James are driven off stage 2 and forced to play an acoustic set on stage one. (It turns out so well that they perform acoustically again, later on in Denver!) That night, Geoffrey and Ayub join Peter Gabriel in an extended version of ‘In Your Eyes’ at the end of Peter’s set.

SunDAY SeptEMBER 12

Marcus amphitheater, milwaukee, wisconsin.

The sun is back for the show. The amphitheatre is set right on Lake Michigan— very nice. I grab a smart drink and head for the Tower Records tent, passing through the workshop tent where a Chinese dance class is in full swing.

In the Tower tent, a customer is enquiring about Ayub Ogada ’s record En Mana Kuoyo which the sound men play between sets (Ayub is MC’ing stage one for the whole tour).

The conversation goes like this:

Customer: “What’s that thing he plays?” Tower guy: “It’s a kind of harp.” Me: “It’s called a nyatiti.” Customer: “What did you call me?” Me: “No, the instrument.” Tower guy: “He’s from the record company.” Customer: “You probably think you’re pretty cool, then, huh?” Me: “Uhh…” (thinking: smart drinks don’t work.) Tower guy: “It’s a kind of harp.” Customer: “Sounds like a banjo.” Me & Tower guy: “Yep.”

The Terem Quartet play an astonishing set. Somehow they blend absolute technique with a wicked sense of humor. And you can’t underestimate the appeal of a bass balalaika. Later, Sheila joins Peter, Ayub and Geoffrey for the wildest version yet of ‘In Your Eyes.’ Only at WOMAD.

WOMAD U.S.A. 1993

Monday September 13

Deer creek music center, indianapolis, indiana.

We’re starting to feel the effects of three shows without a day off. I dream I am a Drummer of Burundi, except I have a large stuffed duck instead of a drum. At breakfast, I accidentally eat a plastic fork. The smart drink girl smiles knowingly as she fills my glass.

It’s Ayub and Deb Heithersay’s (WOMAD’s marketing co-ordinator) birthday. WOMAD Music’s Annie Reed MCs stage 2 like a pro. I met a journalist who was so earnest and well meaning that he over pronounced the names of the Real World artists (example: Ayub Ogada became Eye-oo-bay Oh-gha-da-bay). He turned out to be very knowledgeable and was very gracious when I gently corrected him. I spend the rest of the day with a video crew filing the Real World performances. Another great show.

WOMAD U.S.A. 1993 Neil Finn of Crowded House

ThursDAY SeptEMBER 16

Fiddler’s green amphitheatre, denver colorado.

Denver is a strange place. Geoffrey and I are accosted by a man with a didgeridoo who insists that we listen to him play. He was clearly not qualified to operate the thing (a licence should probably be required). Another man has to get a message through to Peter about the ‘spacecraft’. A radio station asked the Drummers of Burundi their opinion of Monkees drummer Mickey Dolenz.

On the other hand, Sheila played her set with the sun setting behind the stage. Guo Yue of Trísan joined Crowded House onstage for another only at WOMAD collaboration, and Remmy delivered a really hot set on the improvised stage 3. On to L.A.

FriDAY SeptEMBER 17

Las vegas, nevada.

Our coach stops at a casino for lunch. Lo and behold, the Drummers of Burundi are there, looking somewhat taken aback. I hope someone takes the time to explain the Las Vegas phenomenon to them, lest they think that all Americans are insane.

WOMAD 1993 Remmy Ongala

Saturday September 18

Usc san dominguez, los angeles, california.

I hear the new Real World release, Ghorwane ’s Majurugenta , on the radio on my way to the venue. The TV crews apparently all live in L.A. and they are all at the show. Sheila performs vocal percussion countless times for the cameras. Ziggy Marley joins the tour here. The backstage scenes are wild, movie stars, television actors and other personalities mingle with the musicians and tour personnel. For the first time, I am able to look back on the tour and realize what a massive success it has been.

WOMAD U.S.A. 1993 Golden Gate Park

SunDay September 19

Golden gate park, san francisco, california.

The last show of the first ever WOMAD U.S. tour takes place at the largest-capacity venue yet, the Polo Fields in beautiful Golden Gate Park. It turns out to be a very fitting end for this very special tour. Drawn to the park by very positive advance press and another perfect day, people stream into the park in droves. Over 50,000 are in attendance when Sheila Chandra takes the stage to commence the last WOMAD U.S.A. festival of 1993. Inspired by the incredible crowd, she performs brilliantly and receives an overwhelming response. Not to be outdone, the other artists follow suit and deliver an absolutely electrifying series of performances.

The event is huge: a crowd of over 100,000 people is there by mid-afternoon and the gates are closed. The show’s statistics correspond well with WOMAD’s global perspective: we find out later that it was the largest paid concert of 1993 for the whole world!

When Peter Gabriel takes the stage in the early evening, a roar goes up from the crowd that I can feel in my chest, even backstage. It gets louder as ‘Come Talk To Me’ gathers speed and takes off. Ten songs and several encores later (100,000 Gabriel-crazed people can be so demanding!) and WOMAD’s first foray into the U.S. is over.

It’s difficult to say goodbye. On several levels, WOMAD is about community and even in the space of two weeks, a strong bond has developed among the artists, crew and production team. I have a feeling that we’ll all be seeing each other next year, when WOMAD returns to the States.

I was at this show! I had seen The Cult in '86 or '87 (??) and it was one of the most epic shows I'd been to in my very young life. This one, as you noted, was NOT. Except for Lenny Kravitz, who was great. I did not go to this with my future ex husband, but ironically enough, we fought at a Lenny Kravitz show several years later. Small world. :) Fun "project". I have so many old ticket stubs and crazy memories of shows. Fun to hear someone else's too. :)

Oh, shoot... I forgot I have a website to update! I really should get to doing that! I think I remember seeing you at that show. Lenny Kravitz: Making couples fight since at least 1992.

Hi. Awesome site! You've got me thinking. I saw Lenny Kravitz at Auburn University around 1990-1991. I'm a huge Craig Ross fan. Any more details available? Date? Can't find it on Google. Thanks!

Thanks for checking out the site! I wish I had more info for you, but I never followed Mr. Kravitz that closely. So I just don't know! Sorry, and thanks again!

The Ticket Stub Project

I've collected many tickets stubs from all the shows I've seen through the years.   There are shows I've seen that had no ticket, and I have lost a few stubs here and there.  This is my attempt to chronicle what I remember about each stub that I have. I'll post about each on the day of the year that the show happened! If you were at one of the shows, please share your memories in the comments! Here's the list so far!

Born Leonard Albert Kravitz on May 26 1964, Lenny Kravitz is a rock and soul singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and actor from New York, US.

Known for his unique blend of just about every music genre including rock, soul, reggae, psychedelic rock, R’n’B and ballads, Lenny Kravitz is a multi-talented artist whose craft has been perfected since 1978 (when he was just 14 years old). He won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for four consecutive years (1998-2002), which broke the record for most wins in that particular category and most consecutive wins in one category by a male artist.

He has been nominated for and won awards from the likes of BRIT Awards, American Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards to name but a handful. Since 2011, Kravitz has also been an Officer of the Odre des Arts et des Lettres in France. His penchant for producing music that spans a plethora of genres and cultures could be attributed to his multi-cultured heritage (his mother, who played Helen Willis on the TV show The Jeffersons, was of Afro-American and Afro-Bahamian descent and his father, from a Russian-Jewish family originating from Ukraine). Then again, it could simply be down to growing up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York, with his parents taking him to concerts form an early age. These live concerts included a Madison Square Garden performance from The Jackson Five, which quickly became Kravtiz’s favorite group.

Other influences on his musical style are James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Following the family moving to the west coast from New York, Kravitz was exposed to rock music from Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, which then influenced his music further, later joined by inspiration from John Lennon and Bob Marley.

Kravitz’s refreshingly retro style (against the general brashness of the 80’s) saw the success of his debut album, “Let Love Rule” (1989) with its radio-hit title track responsible for its triumph. Kravitz also wrote Madonna’s hit single, “Justify My Love” and has collaborated with Guns ‘n’ Roses guitarist, Slash on “Always on the Run.” His most widely recognized album success is third album from 1993 named “Are You Gonna Go My Way” which saw radio hit singles like “Heaven Helo” and “Believe.”

Kravitz is famous for his elaborate stage performances and music videos, and has recently acted in The Hunger Games film series as Cinna.

Live reviews

His Royal Hotness oozing sexappeal, hot like a volcano and cool like an iceberg gave his all, to me when he (husband in my head) came up on stage my baby looked tired then like a bolt of lightning he gave us elements of his many different music genre rock, blues, soul, R&B, funk, jazz, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, pop, folk, and ballads, from start to finish he did not disappoint one song after another showed how much of a genius Mr. Kravitz truly is. 2 hours of none stop music that made you move your feet, hips and shimmy your shoulders, oooh girl when he grind his hips with “I belong to you” HAIL His Royal Hotness.

When he threw that tambourine at Mama and she caught it and start beating it with Zoe looking on it was a precious moment of real blood and bond.

While Lenny was presented with his many guitar’s. His presence was tall, he seemed very humble but also he looked cool calm and collected truly at peace holding his trusted guitar against his body. With this instrument he knows that he can conquer the world. He captivated and held us hypnotized, while he teased with his guitar, with our reaction to Rock N Roll what he wanted and needed he teased with “Taxi” and teased us some more with these three little words “New York City”

We jammed, we swayed, we pumped our fist and we even high fived each other, but most importantly we embraced this talented musical genius who is very much underappreciated with our undivided attention, and he rewarded us with his effortless cool and magnetism voice.

If Lenny aka Romeo-Blue aka His Royal Hotness is ever in your town or State do yourself a favour and buy a ticket. Money well and truly spent.

Lenny Kravitz is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist who has been famous since the 90’s. Some people might dismiss his music as lightweight or without too much substance, but odds are that they are only familiar with some of his more pop-oriented songs that were constantly on the radio in the early 2000’s.

He is actually a much more dynamic and talented performer than some would give him credit for – sort of a modern-day Prince. He actually can play just about every instrument featured on his albums, so you certainly have to give him props for that.

One great thing about a Lenny Kravitz show is that he attracts a very diverse audience. As a multi-racial individual who plays songs with a wide variety of musical styles, there will probably be some songs in any given set that will appeal to just about everyone. A Lenny Kravitz show draws an audience with people of all races and ages.

He also puts on quite an elaborate stage show, complete with a number of interesting costumes! Open-minded music fans will find that there is a lot more to Lenny Kravitz than his songs that get radio play. His eclectic, soulful music and surprising amount of technical chops will win over all but the most cynical individual.

Let me start with the basics...Event Venue, Civic Theatre San Diego, was great. easy parking, Sound amazing, seating good.

Lenny Kravitz, Holy Shit! He is out standing!!! I go to 3-6+ concerts a month. He rates in the top 15! He is super talented, entertaining, totally into the music, creates an amazing space, has a great variety of fan of all ages, super easy on the eyes! Good I have to say he is super sexy :o)

His lyrics are amazing, the BAND is crazy talented, unbelievable musicians. His interaction with the crowd is in the top 3 concerts, his message is brilliant he definitely brings the crowd into unity, which i personally enjoy. I would see him again and again. I have always enjoyed his music, interviews and what he stands for. I decided 1 hr before his sold out show, to see if I could grab a last minute ticket and go on an adventure and sure enough one ticket populated at the last minute. Man am I soooooooo glad I grabbed it! I generally don't care to go to concerts alone, but I didn't feel alone once I got there. LOVED this concert, highly recommend, super inspiring. Aloha XO...dm

Lenny Kravitz is a sexy sexy beast, that let my 20 year old self in a state of frenzy when the concert was over.

He was entertaining on so many levels that I simply could not behave during his performance. His musicality and sheer stage presence astounded me, even though I had been a fan of his for years. He sang some of his classic songs, much to everybody's delight, leaving out some of my favorites though like "Again" and "Stand by your woman".

The set could have been longer, with less musical solos, as amazing as they were (that trumpet and sax solo gave me life), but then again as much as Lenny was dancing and gyrating on stage he probably couldn't have sang more.

However, I'm greedy.

It was an all around beautiful (his rendition of "let love rule, and "sister" were just awe-inspiring), entertaining (the man can move, and entice everybody to move with him), and thrilling (I repeat he is a sexy sexy beast).

Hands down one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

I took my eight years old son to appreciate an artist that his mama has been listening to for over 20 years and I wish his reaction to when Lenny came on stage went viral, though I did not record him at the time :oD

He was ecstatic to see a rock and roll artist performing live for the first time in his life! He asked me if he could meet Lenny and I will sure do what I can to make it possible:o)

Lenny is a true artist! That was also my first time watching him live and more than a dream come true, it was a real satisfaction to realise how amazing he is on stage!

My only regret about the show was no to be near the stage. Did not expect that ge would get so close to his fans!

Thank you Lenny! I will be there again with my boy! Lots of love and keep raising vibration!

Lenny still has what he has always had, big heart, decent voice and a great band. His interaction and willingness to go out into the crowd, to great people, slap hands sign autographs on stage, to share with the audience was fantastic! Never really seen an artist get into the crowd like he did, but he pulled it off! I might add, without being surrounded by tough security guards knocking people out of the way.

The sound set up was perfect, the stage show a little week, the new music not quite what the old stuff was, but honestly, he is worth the ticket price. Not one of my all time top 5 shows, or even 10, but well worth the money and if you are a true Lenny fan, you will not be disappointed.

I love Lenny Kravitz and I have seen him more times than I can count. This show is not on the top of my list, it was different. I love the Fonda Theater and the "up close and personal" experience, but I am not a fan of continuous 20 minute jams on a few songs. He didn't do any of my favorites and jammed for ever and ever. I still love you Lenny!!! The band is amazing.. Glad I could be there.

vanessa-self-ruzin’s profile image

Frickin awesome! A night of great music, love and unity that Lenny created right from the moment he hit the stage. Supported by amazing musicians and at one point a choir, he played his hits and a few new songs. The man is definitely charismatic and his voice is in peak form. He he even signed autographs for some of the lucky front row fans. Catch this show! You will not be disappointed.

Excellent show with a magnificent band.A set list of greatest hits with two songs of the new album.the artist was swept by the magnificent atmosphere in Poble Espanyol.Incredeable when he sang Let Love Rule walking through the people.

Maybe the only negative point was the price of the tickets according to the running time of the concert (less than two hours)

Absolutely the best concert I have ever been too and I’ve been too a lot. The way he interacted with the crowd and then walked around the arena was unbelievable. Never experienced that at a concert before. I think the music was the loudest as well. Loved the light show. Had so much fun. Will definitely be going back to see him again! Loved it and Love him!
