Leon Bridges (born July 13, 1989) is an American rhythm and blues, gospel and soul singer with a sound beyond his years reminiscent of ’60’s Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, however raised in Fort Worth, Texas, Bridges initially picked up the guitar as a vehicle for his songwriting. Whilst working as a dishwasher in a local venue, the singer would regularly perform at open-mic events around Fort Worth, noted for his retro style and silky-smooth vocals. With a rapidly growing reputation, Bridges met White Denim guitarist Austin Jenkins in early 2014, who subsequently watched Bridge perform a show in north Texas. With little time wasted, Bridges, Jenkins and White Denim drummer, Joshua Block, began recording and producing the soul singer’s early songs using old, authentic equipment.

In late 2014 Bridges released a pair of demo tracks, “Coming Home” and “Lisa Sawyer”, to his Soundcloud page, which earned significant international radio play. Following which the singer inked a deal with Columbia Records in December 2014, as well as embarking on his first national tour in early 2015. His track “Coming Home” was officially released in February 2015 earning widespread critical acclaim and going viral within the same month.

Bridges subsequently toured in support of Sharon Van Etten in New York and performed a number of shows alongside Jenkins and Block before they returned to their responsibilities with White Denim. In June 2015, Bridges released his debut studio album “Coming Home”, garnering both positive and nostalgic reviews from the critical press. Charting at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart, and No. 8 in Australia, the record catapulted Bridges to international success, aided by a extensive promotional campaign by Columbia Records.

Live reviews

Leon Bridges' Good Thing show at ACL Moody Theater in Austin, Texas was the for real BEST THING I've seen in a long time! (and I am not prone to hyperbole) He led the audience through quiet stories like "Georgia to Texas" and magical love stories like "Beyond" and sexy times like "Mrs." Also, his smooth moves stirred up things, and got the sold-out crowd on its feet for "Bad Bad News" and " Smooth Sailin." He brought new band members, a new fashion style, and new jazzy sounds to his live show; however, he also gave his faithful fans the songs we know by heart from Coming Home - "Better Man" and "Lisa Sawyer." We could especially feel the Leon Bridges love during the stop-the-show greatness of his encore performance of "The River" with Brittni Jessie! Folks were still groovin to "Mississippi Kisses" even as they exited the theater. Merci beaucoup to LEON BRIDGES and all of his team!

WOW!!!!! Leon Bridges kept the audience engaged, and everyone was into it! If you miss this artist, I feel sorry for you. The energy is wonderful...everyone who goes WANTS to be there and to support live music. Beautiful back up vocals by Brittni Jessie. I don't really know how to describe the experience except to say that young, old, all races and sizes were here. When Mr. Bridges asked everyone to hug the person next to them and say "I love you" AND we did just that,I was hoping he would run for president. lol!

Fantastic show, three song encore. Great musician with him. and amazing opening set by Lianne La Havas. Think about this...when was the last time you went to a show and everyone was in their seats for the OPENING ACT? An amazing talent with a beautiful voice and great original songs.

No wonder Leon's shows are selling out. he's GREAT!

Monday 28th September. Shepherds Bush Empire. Leon Bridges.

Short and sweet today which sums up Leon and Bridges. Bridges is the new kid on the block when it comes to sixties soul. His diminutive frame hides a powerful voice reminiscent of Sam Cooke.

Surrounded by a tight older band and an amazing backing singer Bridges rattles through his debut album and a few covers in a little over 75 minutes. The 3 minute pop songs segue into each other and it’s all over in a blink of the eye.

It’s a polished slick show with the standard between song banter which lets it down a little as ironically it does lack a little genuine soul and feeling. There’s a handful of very good songs on the album and it will be interesting to see how this clear talent develops over the next album or two.

On the whole a good night and certainly one for the future

I started following Leon online in London in 2015 and couldn't get enough of his soulful modern take on a genre of music that seems to have been forgotten. It's like he's breathed life into dusty old vinyls and has been transported from the 1930's (through 40's, 50's and 60's) Leon takes elements from all of these eras and gives them a unique charm all his own. His crowd banter and relationship with his band was warm and genuine and his vocals were impeccable. I would have liked to have seen him play guitar in a few more songs but he played so many songs that we were not left for wanting.

I was looking forward to hearing Leon Bridges live. I really enjoyed his CD.

It's too bad that I sat beside two semi-alcoholics who had to get up several times to either buy more beer or use the bathroom. And in front of two wankers who either sang along (not so bad) or yelled their conversation though the songs they didn't know the words to.

I had a great seat to see the show, but when everyone stood up, I couldn't see anything but people's backs.

What I did see (during the times that people were seated) and heard was great!

It was his first show of the year and it showed. His vocals were noticably off (went flat a shocking number of times) and he was also less than emotionally intense. I'd attribute a lot of this to working-out-the-new-set kinks and that Municipal Auditorium has terrible acoustics. I'd like to give him another chance later in the tour. But I have a feeling that his Houston Rodeo show tonight is not going to go well. It's a big room, he hasn't sold many tickets and he's not quite ready yet. I hope I'm wrong.

Overcrowded. Went with my girlfriend who ended up panicking because of the amount of people. To us it was far too crowded. I’ve been to festivals where it was similar. Just seemed unsafe in the O2 Academy. We ended up leaving to the entrance and just listened from there. It seems like many others were the same, leaving to get some space. It’s a shame since it ruined it for us because the music sounded amazing. I’m just a bit skeptical and think more tickets were sold than the venue could handle.

lewis-henry-1’s profile image

Wow! Wow! Wow! I had heard one or two of Leon's songs before the show and loved them. But it didn't prepare me for the full onslaught of his energy on stage and his music getting the crowd fan I g in the aisles. The Hippodrome in Baltimore added to the feeling of witnessing the rebirth of the Motown sound with a modem twist. I can't wait to see him again when he passes through town.

I highly recommend everyone to catch one if the hottest young acts before he rises to playing much larger venues.

kevin-martini’s profile image

Very handsome, beautiful, soulful voice, Great energy and funky dance moves. He should be thankful to have an extremely talented band and backup vocalist, but i absolutely loved the saxophinist. Wish the set was longer. Would have been nice to hear a few covers but I understand he wants to build his own identity/brand. Love, love, love the venue and the dance party right after. Great crowd, everyone acted like they had sense.

tashamac89’s profile image

I wouldn't go to see him again. His music and performance style suits smaller intimate venue. He didn't really connect with the crowd unfortunately and the sound wasn't great. His dancing and vocals were incredible though but he was more interested in the band then the audience. We cam out in the rain and travelled from the highlands of scotland to be blown away ...but it was too polished.

Leon Bridges’s New Tour Is Filled With Intentional Style

By Christian Allaire

Leon Bridgess New Tour Is Filled With Intentional Style

Singer Leon Bridges has been embarking on his Boundless tour throughout Europe since June, playing tracks from his 2021 album Gold-Diggers Sound. It’s his first time touring since the pandemic began, and Bridges says he’s very much missed being on the stage. “I missed being with my band and crew and the camaraderie we have on the road,” says Bridges. “The stage is where I come alive. I’m naturally an introvert, so that alone time [during the pandemic] was healing—but I missed touring. There’s nothing like being with the fans and connecting with them from the stage.”

With stops in major cities like London, Berlin, Paris, and Madrid, Bridges has been doing tons of sightseeing while traveling.“My favorite was probably the two nights in London, it was just a massive crowd,” says Bridges. “I also premiered [my song] ‘Chocolate Hills’ at Glastonbury with Khruangbin, and the response was great.” Bridges’s fashion choices on the stage have paid homage to the locations he’s playing in. He and stylist Gabriela Tena wanted to specifically support and spotlight local designers through his stage style.

At his London shows, for instance, Bridges wore a crisp white suit with pleating detail by Hong Kong-born, London-based designer Robert Wun. In Vigo, Spain, he also wore a black, embroidered western-style suit from Palomo Spain, the luxury Spanish label known for its fabulously flamboyant pieces. “I like supporting the up-and-coming brands and the underdogs, in all areas of my life,” Bridges says. For the star, taking an intentional approach to clothing is always important. “I love things that are well made, have character, and will stand the test of time,” he says. “Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work with many women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ designers, as well as sustainable, luxury, and heritage brands.”

On stage in Lisbon wearing Behen. When I was preparing for the European dates of my world tour, my stylist Gabriela Tena and I wanted to support local designers in every city. Behen caught my eye because of their amazing tailoring and patterns. I love that they use vintage textiles and have such a vibe-y store. It's always about the details for me.

When it comes to his fashion tastes in general, Bridges adds that he often enjoys mixing both the high and low—like pairing Gucci with Adidas, or Bode with Wrangler (he has an upcoming collaboration with the latter). He also loves incorporating vintage pieces into his looks, like the cream vintage denim jacket he wore for his Munich show. “I still love to thrift and collect vintage—I think it’s cool when fans go visit some of my usual spots and tag me,” he says. “I love to shop in different cities when I can.”

Aesthetics aside, practicality is always a key feature when thinking about his performance attire. “Movement and dance are important to me, so I love clothes that allow me to move,” Bridges says. He adds that clothes are always a secondary thought—his stage energy comes first. “I try to match the energy of the city and give back to the audiences. I remember what it was like to busk on the street, so when I get to headline an overseas arena or amphitheater, I want to make sure I put on a good show.”

Up next, meanwhile, Bridges will be continuing on with his tour throughout the summer. His next stops are focused on North America (perhaps we will see him wearing American and Canadian labels!). Off the stage, Bridges will also be making his way to the big screen, too. “I also just completed filming my first full length feature film with an actual role, as compared to a smaller cameo or singing scene,” he says. “I’m looking forward to that making its way to screens.”

London was one of the first international cities I ever performed in. London shows me so much love and I wanted to return that energy. Robert Wun is a crazy talented designer; he’s really into futurism and has great music taste. Musicians love him: my labelmates Solange, Celine Dion, and Rosalia wear his designs. Dance is super important to me and I prefer outfits that have movement and allow me to express myself without bounds. Walking onto stage in that all white outfit, flowing around me, was a moment.

Playing the Mad Cool Festival in Madrid in an outfit by Paloma Spain. The shirt reminded me of zebra print, which historically has been a favorite print of R&B musicians, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. That was sort of a subtle nod to classic R&B culture.

Going to Boston Calling this weekend? Here's the schedule and everything you need to know about the 2024 festival

By Riley Rourke

Updated on: May 24, 2024 / 6:26 PM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON - It's Boston Calling weekend. From the lineup, to parking, to the bag policy, here is everything you need to know about the three-day festival at the Harvard Athletic Complex.

Boston Calling 2024

Boston Calling 2024 is set to ring in summertime on Memorial Day weekend. Starting Friday at 1 p.m., head to the Harvard Athletic Complex to watch all the hottest artists and some up-and-coming musicians.

The festival runs from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Over two dozen local food vendors will be present, as will plenty of sponsored stalls from places like Dunkin'. The iconic Ferris wheel will also return this year for all your photo needs.

Make sure you dress accordingly for the weather . The festival recommends that people bring a hat and sunglasses with them.

Are there any tickets left?

There are one-day tickets left for Friday and Saturday, but Sunday is sold out. One-day tickets for general admission start at $196.

But don't worry if you really want to see Sunday's lineup, there are still three-day passes available! Three-day passes start at $392 for general admission.

Friday lineup

Ed Sheeran will be headlining on Friday at the Green Stage. Renée Rapp, who may or may not hate Boston , will also be on the Green Stage earlier in the day. You'll have to make some serious decisions later on because Leon Bridges and Young The Giant have a significant overlap in their sets.

But make sure you check out The Wolff Sisters from Canton on the Orange Stage just before 3 p.m.

Saturday lineup

Boston Calling brings country music to the city on Saturday. Headliner Tyler Childers will perform on the Green Stage at 9 p.m. Before Childers, listen to plenty of other artists, like Phish's Trey Anastasio & Classic Tab and Jessie Murph.

Check out Bad Rabbits on the Happy Valley Red Stage at 3 p.m. as they make their return to Boston Calling 13 years later.

Sunday lineup

Sunday, the only sold-out day, is clearly in demand for festival lovers. Headliner The Killers will take the Green Stage on the final day at 9:10 p.m.

Make sure you have your best shoes on because there are plenty of quick turnarounds on Sunday if you want to catch the most popular artists. New pop sensation Chappell Roan will play on the Green Stage at 4:05 p.m. before Megan Thee Stallion takes it over at 6:25 p.m. But make sure you hustle after Megan's performance to Hozier at the Happy Valley Red Stage at 7:35 p.m.

If you missed out on tickets to see The Killers, they will perform a special show at Paradise Rock Club on Saturday night.

Boston Calling address and parking

Whether you are taking an Uber or a friend is dropping you off, it's important you know where to go to get into the festival. The official address for Boston Calling is 65 N Harvard St, Allston, MA 02134.

As for parking, there are no official parking lots nearby, and festival officials recommend that people take the MBTA Red Line to Harvard Square and walk ten minutes from there.

All bags will be checked by security upon entry. There are several items you should not bring in your bags, such as weapons, aerosol containers, smoking products, including vape pens, outside food, and alcohol. You are able to bring in your own water bottle, but it must be empty upon arrival.

All small clutches and fanny packs that are 6" x 9" or smaller are allowed in. They do not need to be clear, but they must only have one pocket.

Anything larger than 6" x 9" has to be smaller than 12" x 6" x 12", and it must be clear.

You are allowed to bring in a hydration pack, but it must only have two pockets, and it cannot have any liquid in it when you enter the festival.

For a full list of things, you cannot bring into the festival go to  Boston Calling's website.

How many people are attending?

The festival is expected to have around 40,000 people attending throughout the weekend!

Carín León Unveils ‘Boca Chueca Vol. 1' Tracklist Featuring Kane Brown, Leon Bridges, Bolela

Carín León recruited a number of musicians to help bring his música mexicana and country crossover album to life. Boca Chueca Vol. 1 is scheduled to arrive on May 30, and the record's newly-revealed track list has unveiled collaborations with Kane Brown, Leon Bridges, Pepe Aguilar , Panteón Rococó, and Bolela.

Boca Chueca Vol. 1 will span 19 songs, with the bulk of the featured guests appearing on the second half of the album. Bridges will join on "It Was Always You (Siempre Fuiste Tú)," while Brown and Aguilar are featured on "The One (Pero No Como Yo)" and "Lamentablemente," respectively. Rococó performs alongside León on "No Sé," with Bolela joining on "Aviso Importante."

"We're dropping it in two parts because it's a long one, as I like," León recently told Rolling Stone . "There are so many great songs that were saved from over the years because we hadn't found the right place for them in our genre, but I think it's a very revelatory moment for my music. The album will have a lot of romantic tracks, lots of exciting lyrics, some rock, some flamenco. There are a lot of mixes that I think work well together. It all tells a beautiful story."

The musician will support the release of the album with an accompanying tour of the same name. "It's about sharing a different side of myself," León added. "Very focused on the music and the concept and all those details. I want to bring the music to an alternative crowd, but also playing our original albums with lots of love. We're going to rest and be ready to agarrar el toro por los cuernos (grab the bull by the horns)."

Leon Bridges says he ‘needed alcohol to perform’ but that he was ‘never an alcoholic’

Singer says he made ‘new rules’ to cut back on his alcohol dependency, article bookmarked.

Singer Leon Bridges has opened up about his struggles with alcohol , revealing that he needed to drink to perform live.

The Texan singer-songwriter said that during his worst moments, he could be found drinking between five and 10 shots as well as a beer each day.

In a new interview with ES Magazine , the 30-year-old said he had only used alcohol to make himself “less self-aware” during his performances.

“I wouldn’t call myself an alcoholic, but for me, I couldn’t perform without drinking because it made me less self-aware when I was on stage,” he told the publication.

“It was just one of those things that, with the lifestyle, was just so easy, like, to drink every day.

Alcoholic drinks: a less calorific alternative

“When I was out it was usually five to 10 shots, a beer, and that was happening every day. Maybe a couple of shots before the show, then after the show, more drinking. Then when I’m at home, more.”

Singer Leon Bridges performs as a special guest on the Outdoor stage during week 1, day 3 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 15, 2018 in Indio, California.

According to the NHS , men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week in order to keep health risks from alcohol to a low level.

Dubai tourists can now buy alcohol from shops

A unit of alcohol is 8g or 10ml of pure alcohol, which is the equivalent of half a pint of lower to normal-strength lager/beer/cider (ABV 3.6 per cent) or a single small shot measure (25ml) of spirits (25ml, ABV 40 per cent).

The “River” singer credited his strong friendship group for helping him overcome his issues with alcohol and said that he cut back on how much whisky he now asks for on his tour rider.

“I made new rules when I was like, okay, don’t drink during the week,” he added.

“Because there have been moments in the past when I’d literally get drunk, and get super emotional and start bawling, because I’m bottling up all this anxiety because of all my insecurities.”

Having previously performed for former US president Barack Obama , the Coming Home singer opened up about his seemingly less than positive views about the current Head of State, President Donald Trump .

“No one cared about politics until the orange man, I miss a president who can dance, or who had flavour,” he said.

“I’ve never been huge into politics, you know what I’m saying? But it’s crazy that I was able to play for and meet the first black president.”

The full interview appears in this week’s edition of ES Magazine, out now.

'Share their stories': Pause to honor sacrifices on Memorial Day | Candace McKibben

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3308 continue their long tradition of honoring departed comrades on Memorial Day at the VFW Post Cemetery.

When my husband and I took our grandson to Washington, D.C., for Spring Break 2024, I learned something about the National Park Service that I had either forgotten or never knew. And that is that this governmental agency of the United States manages not only all the national parks, but also most national monuments and memorials, as well as other natural, historical, and recreational properties, with various title designations.

National Parks are set apart by Congress for use by the American people because of an outstanding natural feature that inspires, educates, and supports recreation.

National Monuments are reserved by the Federal Government because they contain objects of historic, prehistoric, or scientific interest. Created in 1916 under President Woodrow Wilson, the NPS today manages 429 units (usually called parks), 150 related areas, and numerous programs that help conserve the nation's natural and cultural heritage for the benefit of current and future generations.

While we certainly did not see all of the 25 NPS units in the District of Columbia, we did see the iconic ones on the mall, and were especially moved by those memorializing fallen soldiers.

Military memorials

There are 11 military memorials designated on or near the National Mall, two of which are still in progress, including the Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial Site and the Global War on Terror Memorial Site.

The considerable sensitivity and thought that is spent in developing each memorial is deeply evident in the sacredness felt upon entering the space they occupy. And this Memorial Day weekend, many visitors to DC will be moved by these memorial sites as they reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice made by so many through the years on behalf of our nation and the republic for which it stands.

In particular, a group of people associated with Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), will be present in numbers. The President of TAPS, Bonnie Carroll, says that for survivors of a military loss, every day is memorial day.

But the national holiday “is an important opportunity for a grateful nation to acknowledge the men and women who served and died. It ensures that Americans never underestimate the high price of freedom and never forget the heroes who bravely defended it.”

Carroll implores us all “to say their names, share their stories, and support those they left behind."

Special activities

This year, as every year since TAPS inception in 1994, the organization that Carroll founded has a weekend of meaningful activities planned in the DC area for those remembering a fallen hero on Memorial Day.

According to their website, taps.org , which is replete with helpful resources, thousands of survivors will gather with TAPS at the Annual National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp in Arlington, Virginia, this weekend.

Survivors will also participate in the National Memorial Day Concert hosted by PBS at 8 p.m., May 26, and the National Memorial Day Parade hosted by Boeing at 2 p.m. on May 27.

In our area, citizens can tune in to either or both the concert (WFSU-TV) and parade (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW stations). We might also attend the Memorial Day Ceremony at The National Cemetery on Apalachee Parkway at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 26, or the AARP Memorial Day Walk at Maclay Gardens at 8 a.m. Monday, May 27, among other local events to commemorate the day.

Preserving a dream

For many, Memorial Day has become a day to find great sales on big ticket items, to kick off the summer with the first barbecue, or to otherwise enjoy a holiday.

But at its heart, Memorial Day is about remembering those who died to preserve a dream of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all people, the dream of liberty and justice for all.

For centuries great thinkers have come to the same conclusions about how a people treat their heroes and sheroes. Cicero, Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, and writer, who lived in the century prior to Christ said, “Poor is the nation that has no heroes, but poorer still is the nation that having heroes, fails to remember and honor them.”

Centuries later, President Abraham Lincoln said, “A nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure.” When President Harry Truman was in office he concurred, vowing, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices."

Early celebrations

When Memorial Day was founded in our country as Decoration Day, it was at the end of the Civil War, when more than 622,000 Americans, from the North and the South, had died. While several cities claim to be the first to have a Memorial Day celebration, one of the earliest and perhaps largest ceremonies was held in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865.

Historian, Dr. David Blight, writes that in May 1865 newly freed African Americans reburied 257 Union soldiers who had died in a prison camp and were hastily buried, so that they might have a proper interment. The new graves were blanketed by flowers and dedicated, with thousands of people parading down the racetrack that had once been the site of the prison camp.

If not the first Memorial Day celebration, it seems to me to have best captured the intent of the day, to honor those who died in war.

Amidst the distractions we may face this Memorial Day, including the mixed emotions many of us have about war as we see it being played out in our world, I hope that, like the newly freed African Americans in 1865, we can find ways to meaningfully honor those who died in service to our country, no matter how they died.

Prayer and reflection

And I hope that like Truman, who both ordered the horrific bombing at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, and proclaimed Memorial Day, Tuesday, May 30, 1950, and each succeeding Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace, we will look for the paradoxes of war and peace in our own spirits and pursue peace.

In 2000, a “National Moment of Remembrance” was added to the ways Americans were asked to celebrate Memorial Day. At the bidding of Congress, Americans were asked to pause on Memorial Day for one minute, at 3 p.m. local time, to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.

Suggested as a simple and unifying way to commemorate our history and honor the struggle to protect our freedoms, it also is a symbolic wave of hope as Americans around the globe, each in their own specified time, pause to remember.

To “re-member” is to unify, to reconcile, to make whole, and it is my prayer for our nation and our world this Memorial Day.
