The LRE backing band is composed of accomplished professional studio and touring musicians. It all starts in the engine room with the heartbeat of the group Berklee alumni drummer percussionist Eth an Leff, and the band's founder and bassist Paul “Junior” Boyne. Newest additions to the group are multi instrumentalist Brad Goff on piano keys, guitars, vocals and Curtis Killian guitar and vocals. Rounding out the band’s sound on pedal steel, guitars, mandolin, and vocals are Chris Tarrow and alternating shows are seasone d with  multi-instrumentalists Andy Santospago and Cody Nielson each contributing pedal steel, acoustic guitar, lap steel ,harmonica, mandolin, banjo and vocal harmonies.

With 11 Grammy’s, over 30 studio albums and having collaborated with: Bette Midler, Frank Zappa and Johnny Cash, it’s no surprise that alternative singer and songwriter Linda Ronstadt (born 15 July 1946) from Arizona, U.S. has earned the title as one of the most successful female recording artists in America.

Ronstadt’s career began back in the mid 1960’s amidst the emerging folk and country rock scenes which would have a significant impact on her distinctive qualities. Spending most of her time performing alongside Bobby Kimmel and Kenny Edwards in the folk-rock outfit known as The Stone Doneys, the latter half of the sixties saw Ronstadt set time aside to work on her solo material. In 1969 she released her debut solo “Hand Sown… Home Grown” and saw Ronstadt embrace elements of country rock. The album featured a few Bob Dylan covers and the single “(She’s a) Very Lovely Woman” and although the album wasn’t a commercial success, it wasn’t long before she was widely recognised for producing the first alternative country record by a female singer.

With backing from her label, the seventies presented Ronstadt as the ‘First Lady of Rock’ as her sound embraced the genre producing hits such as “Heart like a Wheel”, “Simple Dreams” and “Living in the USA”. Having appeared on the front of Rolling Stone magazine a total of six times, Ronstadt walked, talked and breathed the rock n’ roll lifestyle. Which made the eighties a bit of a stark contrast as she made her Broadway debut in “The Pirates of Penzance”. Despite the unconventional dabble in theatre, Ronstadt’s career still flourished as she still continued to produce hits such as “Hurt So Bad” and “Don’t Know Much”.

In an incredible career spanning over six decades, touring with the legendary The Doors and Neil Young, over 100 million records sold worldwide and multi-platinum statuses here there and everywhere, Ronstadt’s influence and talent has not only lent itself to hundreds of tracks but continues to resonate through American recorded music history while inspiring generations.

I'd always seen Linda Ronstadt on TV and I thought she was a beautiful lady. The TV just didn't do her any justice though. In person, she is breathtaking. Just stunning.

Opening up with You're No Good, I was fighting back the tears. I definitely wasn't sad. I was overwhelmed with emotion though. I was just elated beyond belief to be seeing Linda live and in person. My god, her voice. She is the real deal. Woman can sing, like really sing. Nothing forced. She makes it just...effortless. No gimmicks, no fancy pyrotechnics, no backup dancers. Just Linda and the mic. That's it. That is all that is required. Her voice is so strong, needs basically nothing other than the accompaniment of instruments.

This particular night the brunette bombshell did an extended version of some of her biggest hits. And you know of course what we all longed to hear. Yep, Blue Bayou. She knew this. She knew how to command her audience and hold us captive to our will. She waited to perform Blue Bayou on her encore. It was phenomenal. Linda is just spectacular. She is the real deal, a true living legend. I'd give nearly anything to see her live again.

The Portland Conversation With Linda Rondstadt was excellent! Revolution Hall was packed and her fans very enthusiastic. It was captivating to hear of her childhood roots and musical family, with photos of her mom, dad, grandparents, aunt, brothers, and Linda at different stages of her life growing up in Tucson. She captured her career beautifully with quips, stories, & video of her recordings and more. I was amazed by her diverse influences and impressed with her refusal to be cast into a single musical genre. Her 2013 Memoir “Simple Dreams” has more. The event lasted 1.5 hours and she was assisted on & off the stage by a longtime friend and former manager/producer. I am SO glad we travelled from WA State to see her in Portland! (She said she liked Portland much more than Seattle).

It was not a concert but more of a conversation with Linda. She sat on stage with Dan Guerrero and talked about her life from her early days in Tucson to her meteoric rise to stardom in the 70's, 80's and beyond. Linda talked about her days in rock and roll, classics with Nelson Riddle and her famous Spanish albums. I have been a huge Linda fan since her days with the Stone Poneys, loved her book and thought this evening was fabulous.

Mile high stadium in denver, us on sun, 08 aug 1976.

Linda performed between Pure Prairie League and The Eagles, on their first tour with new member Joe Walsh. Linda was fantastic. She played her hits and kept admonishing the crowd to stop shooting her with water guns. Really great show for all three bands.

That amazing big voice echoing around a big barn of a field house. She blew the crowd away that night. So sad to know that we never will hear that voice live again. Incidentally, Dartmouth is in HANOVER, not Manchester.

The Monkees’ Mike Nesmith Said Linda Ronstadt Heard ‘Different Drum’ and ‘Made Us All Rich’

The Monkees ‘  Mike Nesmith  understood the music industry. He learned early on that the way to make even more money as a performer was through songwriting. While Nesmith pushed for songwriting credit on some of The Monkees’ early releases, one song moved Nesmith into the stratosphere as a songwriter outside the band. He claimed Linda Ronstadt heard his 1964 song “Different Drum” and “made us all rich.”

Mike Nesmith was a songwriter before The Monkees

Nesmith started writing and performing music after a stint in the Air Force, recording under the name “Michael Blessing.” It was there that he found some small success as a songwriter.

During that period, Nesmith wrote tunes recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys (“Different Drum”), and the Greenbriar Boys recorded it in 1964. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band recorded “Mary Mary” before it was a hit for The Monkees.

In late 1965, Nesmith read a magazine ad seeking “four insane boys” to play in a Beatles-inspired band on a new TV show. This job switch set Nesmith on the path of a television career, but he always knew how important and lucrative songwriting could be. Therefore, he rallied against the powers who ran the behind-the-scenes machinations of  The Monkees .

In fact, during  his last tour  with The Monkees, bandmate Mickey Dolenz discussed Nesmith’s songwriting during the concert. Dolenz told the crowd that Nesmith once encouraged him to write songs, saying, “that’s where the money is.”

“Boy, I wished I had listened,” Dolenz said.

Mike Nesmith thanked Linda Ronstadt for hearing ‘Different Drum’ and ‘making us all rich’

In an interview with Nesmith published by  Rebeat Magazine , the songwriter discussed the success of “Different Drum” and how it impacted his life.

Nesmith discussed the differences in his version of the song versus the one Ronstadt made famous.

“Well, that was how I wrote the song — how it is on  Hits . It’s got the twang, and it’s got the balance, and it’s got all that stuff. That’s a real kind of mountain music,” he shared.

Nesmith continued, “That’s home-style backyard, a hot Saturday afternoon, and fruit jars full of ice tea. That’s where that comes from. I sang ‘Different Drum’ for John Herald of the Greenbriar Boys like that. He took it home and turned it into the ballad that it became. Linda heard the ballad and made us all rich.”

“Different Drum” would reach No. 13 on the U.S. charts and usher in Ronstadt’s career as a pop and country artist.

Nesmith said writing songs created ‘movies of the mind’

In an interview for the  Wall Street Journal  regarding “Different Drum” in 2013, Nesmith likened writing songs to making “movies of the mind.”

“Whenever I wrote, I liked creating little ‘movies of the mind.’ I was thinking about two lovers—one of whom decides they love different things. In later years, comedian Whitney Brown referred to ‘Different Drum’ as the first ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ breakup song,” he explained.

“The lyrics, about a breakup, came fast—but they had nothing to do with my personal life. I was newly married, with a pregnant wife,” Nesmith clarified.
