Great trip. Good variety and packed a lot in in the 10 days. Couple of long drive days, but just sit back and enjoy the scenery passing you by. Recommend going to the local restaurant in Bekopaka, for the avid ones, if you need a break from the hotel. Excellent local food. Our guide, Bruno, did an impeccable job

11 Days Customized Private Madagascar Vacation

We had a fantastic time in Madagascar. It’s a fascinating place to visit…. Not just for lemurs, though they are adorable both close-up (at Palmarium and Lemur Island) and on day and night ‘safari’ to find them in their truly natural habitat, where they are harder to see but you feel that you are experiencing them in the wild. We saw about 12 different species from the biggest (Indri) to the smallest (mouse lemur). The ones you see depend on the areas you choose. The east side (drive from ‘Tana) proved best for lemurs. The west side (fly from Tana) also had good lemur experiences…. on safari. The west was also an eye-opening cultural experience, seeing and meeting the friendly Madagascan people in their challenging environment. We had no problems with theft or hassle. The scenic sites made the west side trip, notably the Tsingies and also the baobabs. On the organisation, Agate Travel planned, organised and supervised the trip very well. Questions beforehand were answered overnight. The two pairs of guides/drivers were absolutely excellent. In the east, Fafa and Niner were top class despite the tricky roads and traffic. In the west, Martin and Hari ran everything equally well. Both guides (Fafa and Martin) were extremely personable, knowledgeable and strong in English, and they sorted any issues seamlessly. The 2 drivers were professional and kept us safe in demanding conditions. Things ran well to time. Ask for them!! The local guides they selected were also extremely good without exception- all speaking decent English. We met some independent travellers who were managing alone, but as experienced travellers ourselves, we felt that it was a place where the advantages of tour guides were significant and we were glad we didn’t try DIY. By booking fairly close to time, we were unable to get one internal flight arranged which necessitated a two day road trip…. But this had some benefits of seeing more of the country. Long car trips are a necessary evil for holidaying in Madagascar…. if you want to see multiple locations, which I recommend. The 4x4 was comfortable and up to the job. (We we’re just 2 plus the guide and the driver.) On the admin, the accommodation was 3* as advertised and was universally well-chosen. The actual standard varies as some is of necessity lodge-style and some is hotel. Our only gripe was that the Kiridi lodge, where there was really no other option, was a bit run-down and could improve itself… and we had most of one day there. Generally the food was decent enough. Choice isn’t massive but it was generally wholesome. They select local restaurants for lunch that are suitable for tourists. If you’re of a sensitive disposition, you might plan to carry your own lunch meals? Also, you’ll be well away from any medical cover so take your own tummy medicine. Living costs are cheap. We changed $100per day into local currency at the airport and this covered lunches, dinners, drinks, souvenirs and tips… well, nearly anyway…. Depending on your outlay on the last two. We didn’t try exchanging at hotels, or paying in dollars/euros or paying by card. Try to get some smaller notes than the wad of 20000s (approx ~$5) you’ll get at the exchange. Otherwise tipping gets expensive! It would be nice if the travel company offered a ‘small change’ pack for purchase on arrival to overcome this problem. We found that Agate were good at being flexible in tuning the trip to our timings and desires. I noted that many companies were limited in dates offered, while Agate offered considerable variability. However, I would say that they were responsive rather than proactive when it came to information about the trip and Madagascar once we had confirmed. They answered all my questions but I felt a lot of them were obvious questions and could have been covered in an info sheet at the start. Overall, it was a great experience; well-delivered by the company and their people on the ground. Madagascar is a wonderful destination for many reasons - but it’s big, so you spend a lot of time travelling. It was well worth it.
  • Book With Flexibility This operator allows you to rebook your dates or tours with them for free, waiving change fees.

Incredible tour experience with an amazing sight. We kind of planned world tour, we started with Madagascar throught HT Agency Tours for 5 days adventure to the western part to see especially Tsingy Bemara, it was incredibly amazing and adventurious. We were in touch with Garcihel who customized our program, he responded promptly at any time. Angelin was our tour guide, the atmosphere was totally different from the point he picked us up, he animated the group and always found things to surprise us, he is knowledgable. The visit corresponded to what we really wanted to discover. Thank you to the team for making this trip an unforgettable experience.

Baobab Safari Tour

Baobab Safari

The trip on the west side of Madagascar went very well. The professional drivers and local guides were very polite and made me feel very welcomed. We spoke French or English. Some road trips are quite long because the roads have a lot of holes or are not paved, so the trip might feel tiring (or adventurous, depending on your attitude). Madagascar is an interesting place to visit, especially if you like nature and are interested in learning about Madagascar's culture and history.

We just barely returned from a wonderful trip in Madagascar and I miss everything, we had a pleasant experience with Toky our tour guide who made us live in-depth a malagasy immersion with several stories, the cultures of each tribe’s group and specifically the nature that make the country so special and authentic. Of corse our schedule was hectic and exhausting but he was always positive and found something to entertain us; to ensure that the group stays always happy and does not get bored throughout the long tiring bad roads. We had a chance to have him as guide. The program was well executed and organized, the hotels we stayed was perfect. Speaking of nature, madagascar is the best destination for us, I suppose everyone in the group has the same opinion. I speak on behalf of the group in highly recommending this tour company for anyone who dreams to discover this beautiful big island and choosing Toky as a guide, he went beyond. Thanks Toky, you made this tour memorable!!! Riemelt (US)

This was definitely an adventure of a life time. The tour was full of beautiful locations and scenery. The hikes were adjustable for all levels of fitness but could definitely challenge you depending on what you select. With the real take away from this tour being the upfront taste of the people, their daily existence and the wonder call Madagascar. We enjoyed the journey and three weeks later we are still talking about it with a twinkle.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Madagascar

Overall was a good tour ! Just read well ! You will not see the baobab avenue! There only 3 meals inc'ude in all the tour so its add on the budget !!! The restaureant we went were kind of expansive ! ( still ok for sure but if you were tight on a budget it male a big difference) Otherwise i really enjoy my tour and the time spend in the home stay this is the real higtlight of the tour for me ! The ceo was nice and the driver amazingly good we all feel really safe ! Most of the activity are walking tour ! So if you dont like to walk this is not for you ! But you will see a lot of lemurs! most hotels only have one power outlet so provide a double usb port. I loved my tour and can recommand it for sure !
The tour guide Patrick was outstanding. He went above and beyond his job. Always extremely helpful. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty when I needed him.. He took good care of his group and had a friendly and helpful attitude.
It was absolutely lovely to take a recent amazing private tour! The vacation was amazing because to the group of amiable native guides and our fantastic private driver.

Madagascar Explorer – 8 Days Lemurs & Baobabs

Must do adventure.

Travelling composes wildlife culture as well as experiencing the epic landscapes, and if you are the backpacker for the latter one, Isalo National Park in the lhorombe region is probably the best option to consider in Madagascar Tour. The nature of the park seems like the American desert, but with the sweeping oasis, canyons and surrounding palm trees make the region wet and tropical periodically. Though people don’t consider the park as a large bucket for flora and fauna, the Grey-headed lovebirds and Ring-tailed lemurs are there to welcome you in the sun-soaked morning.

While the Ranomafana National Park stretches 415 KMs of multiple ridges and valleys, the altitude ranges up to 1200 meters. The most favorable time to visit the park is the dry season, i.e., December. The mesmerizing contrast in temperature and scenic beauty of the wet rainforests of Ranomafana is the best part of the park. Though at first take it seems to be a dry landscape, there is not a single day that doesn’t witness rain. Isalo might not offer thrills of spotting wildlife, but Ranomafana boasts a tremendous collection of lemurs and mongooses. While heights of the hills are the best place to taste the exclusive breath of beauty, missing the golden Lemurs can be a bitter disappointment in Madagascar, and this park is the place that can offer you all.

Ile Santa Marie is probably the unrecognized paradise that people will never want to leave even they go out of resources. One of the main perspectives of the travelers in Madagascar is to enjoy whale-watching, and the islands here are the best place to have the flavor. Make sure to book a whale-tour with delegates affiliated to Cétamada. Fun is going to get to its Climax when you visit the island of Ile Aux Nates. Whether it is boat driving or kite surfing, Ile Santa Marie is the place to enjoy them all during the Madagascar Tour.

Bucket List Experience

Antananarivo | Bucket List Group Travel

Antananarivo

Most travelers see Antananarivo or Tana as just the entryway to the far-flung islands of Madagascar. Though Antananarivo is full of controversies and problems, the more you explore it, the more you enjoy the gastronomical aspects of the city. The Rova once was the historic parliament of the Malagasy emperors during French rulings. The steepest hills are located in the avenues of the ancient civilization here.

Avenue-of-the-Baobabs | Bucket List Group Travel

Avenue of the Baobabs

Avenue of the Baobabs, often called the Alley of the Baobabs, is one of the attractive places in western Madagascar. The area actually consists of numerous organized Baobab trees making the national highway N8. Though the road is not well-furnished, you can still feel the muddy scent when it rains here.

Tsingy-of-Bemaraha | Bucket List Group Travel

Tsingy of Bemaraha

Located in the district of Antsalova, the Tsingy of Bemaraha is considered as an integral natural reserve. It can be regarded as a part of the Melaky region. It contains the spectacular national park where you can feel the real taste of slogging over the savannas. The karstic plateaus known as the Great Tsingy and Little Stingy dominate over the land of the park. Arguably this place asks to be a UNESCO affiliated World Heritage Site.

Ifaty and Tulear | Bucket List Group Travel

Ifaty and Tulear

Tulear (Toliara), being the principal asset of the Southern part of Madagascar, makes a great layover before you explore the southwest coast and villages such as Anakao, where fishing is the central culture. The resort of Ifaty is at the heart of the country’s most precious ornament – the splendid coral reef. Ifaty is about 22 KMs distant from Toilara. Explore the most extensive region of spiny forest in the Arboretum d’Antsokay before you opt to enjoy the flavor of diving at the pools of the reef.

Nosy-Be | Bucket List Group Travel

Nosy Be is sometimes called with love as ‘The Perfumed Island’ because of its ylang-ylang nurseries. If you crave sea beaches, Nosy Be is the number one choice during Madagascar Tour. Whether you like diving or whale-tour, this is an ideal place for sure. Arguably, Nosy Be boasts numerous festivals over a year. Though it is a little island, festivals make it large throughout the years.

Lemur-Island | Bucket List Group Travel

Lemur Island

Lemur Island is a tiny reserve that protects a number of habituated lemurs. There are four species to see, the bamboo lemur, the black & white ruffed lemur, brown lemur and one diademed sifaka. It is located close to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park , a protected rainforest area in eastern Madagascar. The park’s rich biodiversity includes native species like the big Parson’s chameleon, plus rare orchids and ferns. Trail circuits weave through dense forest, past lakes and the Sacred Waterfall.

Culture and customs

Madagascar is a relatively young nation with inhabitants only traced back 1,300 years. Throughout its history, multiple nations and peoples have influenced the culture and customs of modern-day Madagascar. While some of this history can only be speculated, it's known that much of it has come from Indonesian origins, alongside neighboring African and Arab cultures.

The official languages of Madagascar are Malagasy and French. French is still widely spoken across the country due to the nation being a former French colony.

Today, about 90% of the population identifies as Malagasy, further split into 20 ethnic groups. The largest of these groups is known as the Merina, who lived on the plateau. The country's religious practices are split between Christian and the traditional beliefs of the Malagasy people.

Geography and environment

This iconic island nation sitting off the coast of East Africa in the Indian Ocean, is home to one of the most precious and unique natural environments in the world. Its isolated location means that a distinct variety of animal and plant species have been able to thrive without outside genetic influences.

Possessing extinct volcanoes, hidden waterfalls, cool highlands, grassy plains, pristine beaches, and islands, Madagascar was once completely covered in forest - but due to high levels of deforestation, most forest cover has been lost. Some tracts of rainforest do endure today, but it's estimated that the current level of forest cover is only 1-2 percent of what it once was. Despite this loss, hundreds of species of plants and trees thrive all over the island, from huge, ancient baobab trees to thorny cacti and resplendent ferns.

Eating and drinking

Malagasy cuisine is highlighted by its fresh and tasty homegrown exotic produce alongside its unique local livestock, such as the zebu (a species of cow), and a variety of seafood. Many cultures across the world have contributed to the Malagasy cuisine of today including French, Indonesian, Indian, and nearby African nations.

Food to try in Madagascar

This national dish is made of cubed zebu meat (a local type of cow) and served with a light broth, tomato sauce, and rice. With all the bright colors, it resembles the Malagasy flag.

2. Henakisoa sy Ravitoto

This dish is made up of braised pork and pounded cassava leaves with an assortment of spices.

3. Malagasy chocolate

Because of the unique environment it's created in, Madagascan chocolate has a unique fruity, citrusy, and even forest flavor profile.

4.Henakisoa sy Amalona

One of the seven royal dishes, this traditional meal is made of pork and eel. While an unusual duo to most, this dish is a delicacy in Madagascar.

5.Tsaramaso Malagasy

A slow-cooked white bean and tomato dish cooked with zebu or pork as a stew.

Top things to do in Madagascar

Avenue of the baobabs.

Arguably one of Madagascar's most famous icons is the baobab tree. Walk under the towering trunks of the Adansonia Grandidieri variety, the tallest of the species, at the Avenue of the Baobabs found near the coastal town of Morondava.

Take a sunset stroll under these magnificent trees on our 11 days Madagascar Baobabs & Beyond tour.

Andasibe National Park

If you were hoping to see lemurs in Madagascar, Andasibe National Park is the place to be. Home to 11 species of lemur alongside many other native birds, reptiles, and frogs, the park feels alive with activity.

Enjoy Andasibe National Park by day and night on our 14 day Madagascar Adventure

The Small Tsingy and Great Tsingy

Come across the forest of rocks known as the Tsingys, roughly translated to ‘place where one cannot walk barefoot,' and you can definitely see why. Found in the Bemaraha National Park, these spiky natural limestone formations jut out from the ground. But don't worry; there are rope bridges to get you through.

Trek through and wander over the Big and Small Tsingy on our 24 day Madagascar in Depth adventure

Ranomafana National Park

A government-protected park, the Ranomafana is home to a huge variety of wildlife, from the world's smallest chameleon and striped civet to the famous golden bamboo lemur. Alongside the rare species, walk among stunning forestry and even some carnivorous plants.

Explore the Anja Community Reserve, Ranomafana, and Andasibe National Parks on a 14 day Madagascar Wildlife Adventure

Stop by the country's arts and crafts capital to see the beautiful creations handmade by the local people. See a woodcarver demonstration when you stop by a workshop to learn more about the region's crafts.

Meet the people and learn about their incredible craft during an Ambositra village visit when on our 24 day Madagascar in Depth tour

Chocolate making demonstration

Learn the secrets to the famous Madagascan chocolate during a hands-on demonstration class led by a local chef in Antananarivo.

What a perfect way to finish off your 14 day Madagascar Adventure than with a chocolate class.

Top 5 strange species of Madagascar

1. fat-tailed dwarf lemur.

Known to hibernate for up to eight months of the year, this cute critter lives off fat reserves stored in its hefty tail - saved especially for these months of inactivity.

This odd-looking lemur can be found mainly on the east coast of Madagascar. While it won't win any beauty contests, it can lay claim to being the largest nocturnal primate in the world. Its unique way of finding food (knocking on trees then gnawing through the wood to access the hidden grubs) makes the aye aye similar to the woodpecker.

With a cat-like body and a dog-like face, this strange beast endemic to Madagascar is actually closely related to the mongoose species. A carnivorous predator, the fossa roams forests day and night in search of prey - preferably lemurs, rodents, and other small mammals.

This bizarre little species can bear resemblance to many different animals due to the unique circumstances of its evolution. Sharing ancestry with animals as diverse as elephants, sea cows, and aardvarks, most tenrecs look like small hedgehogs or otters and can range in size from a tiny 4cm to a robust 39cm.

5. Satanic leaf-tailed gecko

Home to a whole raft of interesting and unusual reptiles, Madagascar's most devilish creation has to be the satanic leaf-tailed gecko. With red eyes, a tail shaped like a leaf, and a head like Lucifer, it's no wonder locals are afraid of them.

Madagascar is popular around the world for its specialty produce items such as coffee, chocolate, and vanilla, but there are many other unique souvenirs to find while on the Great Red Island.

It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Madagascar

Vanilla is arguably one of the most famous exports to come out of Madagascar. Shop around for vanilla beans, paste, essence, and more.

Silk shawls (lambas)

Silk weaving is an important part of culture, especially in certain parts of Madagascar. In Sandrandahy villages, generations of mothers have passed the craft of making lambas to their daughters.

Wood carvings

Madagascan wood carvers are known for their woodwork. Find artwork, chess sets, wooden figures, and more.

Madagascan chocolate is shipped all over the world due to its rich and flavourful profile.

Just like chocolate, Madagascan coffee is world-famous and highly sought after.

Is tipping customary in Madagascar?

Tipping isn’t mandatory, but a little generosity will be received positively especially when considering the low wages that most service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change or rounding up the bill at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Madagascar?

Cyber cafes are found in some of the larger cities like Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa and Antananarivo. Smaller towns and remote areas will have far less access, so prepare to disconnect when traveling out of urban centers.

Can I use my cell phone while in Madagascar?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Madagascar's large cities and towns, but less so in rural areas and on remote islands. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your phone.

What are the toilets like in Madagascar?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Madagascar except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as this is rarely provided.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Short city bus ride = 650 MGA
  • Cappuccino = 5,500 MGA
  • Bottle of beer in a restaurant or bar = 6,000 MGA
  • A basic meal in a café or restaurant = 30,000 MGA

Can I drink the water in Madagascar?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Madagascar. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Madagascar?

Major credit cards like Visa are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants in the capital but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Madagascar?

ATMs that accept foreign cards can be found in large cities and the airport, although they're often unreliable or out of service. Be sure to carry a back-up method of payment in case ATM access becomes difficult.

Madagascar safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The age of consent for same-sex relations is 21. Same-sex marriage is not recognised. It is advised to be discreet and avoid public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

Travel to madagascar: lemurs, baobabs & more.

madagascar tour package from dubai

Known by titles such as ‘The Great Red Island’ and ‘Noah’s Ark adrift in the Indian Ocean,’ Madagascar emits an air of grandeur and exceptionality. This is a country where lemurs roam through verdant massifs and rugged deserts, hoping to steer clear of the sly, predatory fossa. Along the coast, windows of boutique lodges open to shorelines glimmering with aquamarine waters and alabaster sand. Indeed—for those who seek ethereal wonder and unconventionality, we point to Madagascar .

Madagascar Tours & Safari Packages

There is no other place like Madagascar. That might sound like brochure talk, but it is true. Madagascar is unique. Of roughly 200,000 known animal species found in Madagascar, 150,000 are endemic, meaning they occur nowhere else in the world. The same applies to the island’s weird and wonderful flora. How this incredible biodiversity came about is much up for debate. But there is nothing debatable about the sense of wonder one experiences when setting foot on this magnificently intriguing country, often referred to as the eighth continent.

6 Questions About Madagascar Tours

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

madagascar tour package from dubai

Why should I go to Madagascar?

“There are many good reasons to go to Madagascar. The immense tropical island of Madagascar is a special destination. For some people it’s the idyllic white sandy beaches and turquoise waters that are the main attractions. Others are lured by the fascinating animal world. There are cuddly lemurs, chameleons ranging from tiny to huge, slinky fossas, leaf-tailed geckos (the ultimate masters of camouflage), and much more. The wildlife is protected in a network of about 50 parks and reserves. These natural places are as diverse as the animals that live in them. Habitats range from pristine rainforest to dry spiny forest, dominated by the weird-looking octopus trees. Then there are oddities, such as the serrated limestone formations known as tsingy, and picture-perfect landmarks, such as the Avenue of the Baobabs.”

Where should I go on a Madagascar trip?

“Madagascar is a very big island and there is a surprising number of places to visit. When going on a road trip, you’ll probably need to choose between highlights of the north or the south. You can’t really do it all in one tour. If you incorporate one or more flights, your options to mix and match increase. Most tours start in Antananarivo. A popular tour takes you to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, the best place to see the world’s largest lemur, the indri. From there you follow the N7 south, spending time in Ranomafana National Park to see a large variety of lemurs and reptiles, and Isalo National Park for some hiking in spectacular sandstone formations. The tour ends on the west coast at Toliara or Ifaty, which are great places to relax on the beach. Highlights of the north include the rainforest of Amber Mountain National Park with its waterfalls, crater lakes and abundance of chameleons. Ankarana Special Reserve with its tsingy landscapes is another not-to-be-missed destination up north. Both parks can be visited from Madagascar’s most popular beach destination, Nosy Be. A great bush-and-beach combo is a tour combining time in two properties run as all-inclusive bush lodges: Mandrare River Camp at Ifotaka Community Forest and Manafiafy Lodge at Sainte Luce reserve. You’ll be spoiled for choice of guided activities on this tour. There’s lemur watching, night walks, cultural tours, whale watching, kayaking and much more.”

How long do I need in Madagascar?

“Unless you’re mainly going on a beach holiday in Madagascar, you’ll ideally need at least 12 days to visit some of the highlights. Many roads are in bad condition and the driving time between parks is often long. You might have to overnight in small towns along the way. Luckily, this is never wasted time. You’ll learn about the traditional cultures and the many crafts and arts the Malagasy people are known for. To take in the main highlights of the north and the south of the country, you’ll need about 20 days, even when making use of a couple of domestic flights. With limited time available, a return trip from the capital city, Antananarivo, to Andasibe-Mantadia NP is a great option. The driving time each way is three hours, and you can see a lot on a 4-day tour to this popular park. You’ll have a chance to see different lemur species and a variety of reptiles and amphibians. A night walk is a great opportunity to see some nocturnal species. This tour is a great introduction to Madagascar or a possible stopover on an Africa trip of a lifetime covering highlights of different countries.”

What is the best time of the year for a Madagascar safari?

“Madagascar can be visited at any time of the year. However, the wettest months of January, February and March are perhaps best avoided. September to November is a lovely time for a beach holiday, but the cool, dry months from May to October are better for hiking. The coldest months aren’t ideal to see some animals. Therefore, the best wildlife-viewing months are the shoulder months of April, May, October and November. These months are warm enough for all animals to be active, but not too wet. Having said all this, you have to keep in mind that there are wide regional variations. The east of the island sees the most rain, so avoiding the peak of the Wet season is more important here than in drier parts of the country.”

Do I need to be physically fit for a Madagascar safari?

“As all wildlife viewing in Madagascar is done on foot, you will need to have a reasonable level of fitness for a safari on the island. The rainforest parks tend to be wet and the paths can be very muddy and slippery. Walking in the dry parks in the southeast of the country is usually easier. There are different trails with different lengths and difficulties available in all the parks. Even the short trails are very rewarding and give great opportunities to see lemurs and other wildlife. There are also many sanctuaries and private reserves in the country where it is sometimes possible to see animals within the immediate vicinity of the lodge. So, while you’ll get the most out of a Madagascar safari with a level of fitness allowing you to take on some of the longer hikes, you can in fact see a lot without having to walk very far. However fit you are, it is important to come well prepared with good shoes, a hat and rain gear. A walking stick can also come in handy to keep you steady on slippery slopes.”

How much will this tour cost?

“There are many variables determining the price of a Madagascar tour. However, as a guideline, you can expect a 12-day mid-range package to start at around US$2,000 per person. The level of accommodation is a big factor. Taking a few local flights can save valuable time otherwise spent driving long distances, but it also increases the overall cost. Another variable is the choice between a private or group tour. Spending time on the beach is usually cheaper than moving around on tour. Taking all these variables into account makes for a wide range of prices.”

Unveiling the Mysteries of Madagascar: A Journey through Nature's Wonderland

A Madagascar tour is an odyssey into a realm of unparalleled biodiversity, unique landscapes, and vibrant cultures. The fourth largest island in the world, Madagascar stands as a testament to nature's creative prowess, boasting endemic flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth. Madagascar tour packages, meticulously crafted, beckon travelers from India, whether they embark from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, or other major cities. From the otherworldly Avenue of the Baobabs to the lush rainforests of Andasibe, a Madagascar tour promises an extraordinary adventure through this biological treasure trove.

Overview of Madagascar:

Before immersing ourselves in the details of a Madagascar tour package, it's crucial to appreciate the island's distinctive features. Isolated from continental land masses for millions of years, Madagascar evolved into a biodiversity hotspot, home to lemurs, chameleons, and countless other endemic species. The island's diverse ecosystems range from spiny forests and highland plateaus to pristine beaches and coral reefs, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

Madagascar Packages - Arrival in Antananarivo:

A Madagascar tour often commences in Antananarivo, the capital and cultural hub of the island. Travelers embarking on Madagascar tours from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, or other major cities find themselves in a city that blends French colonial architecture with Malagasy influences. Madagascar packages might include visits to historical sites such as the Rova of Antananarivo, a royal palace with panoramic views of the city, and the vibrant Analakely Market, where local crafts and produce abound.

Antananarivo serves as the gateway to the wonders that await on a Madagascar tour, offering a glimpse into the island's rich history and cultural diversity.

Madagascar Tours from India - Avenue of the Baobabs:

One of the iconic highlights of Madagascar tours is the Avenue of the Baobabs, a surreal landscape that seems transported from another world. Madagascar tour packages often include a visit to this majestic avenue, where towering baobab trees line the dirt road, creating an otherworldly and photogenic setting.

Travelers on Madagascar tours might witness the sun setting behind these ancient giants, casting long shadows and illuminating the landscape with warm hues. The Avenue of the Baobabs serves as a symbolic gateway to the unique wonders that define a Madagascar tour.

Madagascar Holidays - Lemur Encounters in Andasibe:

No Madagascar tour is complete without encountering the island's most iconic residents – lemurs. Madagascar tour packages frequently include a visit to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, a rainforest reserve that is home to a variety of lemur species, including the indri, the largest living lemur.

Madagascar tours from India might involve guided walks through the lush rainforest trails of Andasibe, where travelers can witness lemurs leaping through the trees, chameleons camouflaging on branches, and a symphony of unique bird calls filling the air. The biodiversity of Andasibe provides an immersive experience for those on Madagascar holidays, allowing them to connect with the island's extraordinary wildlife.

Accessibility and Connectivity:

Madagascar's Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo is the primary gateway for travelers arriving on Madagascar tours. Direct flights from major Indian cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Pune, connect seamlessly to Antananarivo. Once on the island, Madagascar tour packages often include well-organized transfers, allowing travelers to explore different regions with ease.

Madagascar Packages - Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park:

Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a surreal landscape of limestone formations known as "Tsingy." Madagascar tour packages might include visits to this otherworldly park, where jagged limestone pinnacles create a maze-like terrain. The Grand Tsingy, with its razor-sharp limestone needles, offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure for trekkers on Madagascar tours.

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park provides a unique opportunity for travelers to witness the island's geological wonders and discover the adaptations of flora and fauna to this harsh environment. Madagascar holidays in this park often include guided hikes, exploring caves, and encountering endemic wildlife.

Madagascar Tours - The Emerald Sea of Île Sainte-Marie:

Madagascar holidays often extend to the picturesque Île Sainte-Marie, an island off the east coast known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and rich pirate history. Madagascar tour packages might include boat trips to observe humpback whales during their annual migration, adding a marine adventure to the island experience.

Travelers on Madagascar tours can explore the island's pirate cemeteries, visit traditional villages, and enjoy water activities such as snorkeling and diving in the turquoise waters surrounding Île Sainte-Marie. The island provides a tranquil and idyllic setting for relaxation during Madagascar holidays.

Madagascar Packages - Avenue of the Palms in Manakara:

Madagascar tours often take a scenic journey on the Fianarantsoa-Côte Est Railway, traversing landscapes adorned with lush vegetation and dramatic valleys. Madagascar tour packages might include a stop in Manakara, where the Avenue of the Palms captivates visitors with its towering palm trees lining the railway tracks.

Madagascar holidays in Manakara offer a glimpse into the laid-back coastal life, and travelers can experience the local culture by exploring markets, engaging with the friendly communities, and embarking on boat trips along the Pangalanes Canal.

Madagascar Tour - Cultural Exploration in Antsirabe:

Antsirabe, a charming highland town, often features in Madagascar tour packages as a cultural stopover. Known for its thermal springs and artisan workshops, Antsirabe provides a unique blend of Malagasy and colonial influences. Madagascar tours might include visits to traditional pousse-pousse (rickshaw) workshops, where travelers can learn about this eco-friendly mode of transportation.

Antsirabe also offers opportunities to explore nearby lakes, thermal baths, and volcanic landscapes, adding diverse experiences to Madagascar holidays. The town's French-inspired architecture and friendly ambiance contribute to its appeal as a cultural gem.

Madagascar Tours - The Mystique of Morondava:

Madagascar tour packages might lead travelers to the coastal town of Morondava, known for its laid-back atmosphere and proximity to natural wonders. Madagascar tours often include visits to the Kirindy Forest, a unique dry deciduous forest, where travelers can spot the fossa, Madagascar's largest carnivore.

Morondava is also the gateway to the iconic Baobab Alley, an enchanting avenue bordered by towering baobab trees. Madagascar holidays in Morondava provide the perfect setting for witnessing breathtaking sunsets behind these ancient giants.

Madagascar Holidays - Relaxation in Nosy Be:

Nosy Be, an island off the northwest coast, is a popular destination for Madagascar holidays, renowned for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and vanilla plantations. Madagascar tour packages might include leisurely days spent on the pristine beaches, exploring underwater wonders through snorkeling or diving, and indulging in the island's vibrant nightlife.

Madagascar tours often include excursions to nearby islands, such as Nosy Komba and Nosy Tanikely, where lemurs, chameleons, and diverse marine life can be observed.

Madagascar Packages - Ranomafana National Park:

Ranomafana National Park, another biodiversity hotspot, is frequently included in Madagascar tour packages. Known for its dense rainforests and natural hot springs, the park is home to various lemur species, including the rare golden bamboo lemur. Madagascar tours might involve guided walks through the park's trails, where travelers can marvel at the diverse flora and fauna.

Ranomafana National Park contributes to the conservation efforts of Madagascar, and some Madagascar holidays may include opportunities for travelers to learn about local conservation initiatives and contribute to wildlife protection.

A Madagascar tour is a captivating journey through a realm of unparalleled biodiversity, unique landscapes, and vibrant cultures. Madagascar packages, whether originating from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, or other major Indian cities, cater to a spectrum of interests, from lemurs and chameleons to surreal limestone formations and pristine beaches. Madagascar tours from India offer a chance to witness the island's natural wonders, explore its diverse ecosystems, and connect with the friendly Malagasy people. Andasibe National Park

Andasibe National Park is a part of Toamasina. 140 kilometers from Antananarivo, and 200 kilometers from Tamatave. The surface of the area is 16,310 hectares (Analamazaotra Special Reserve is 810 hectares while Mantandia National Park is 15,500 hectares). The climate is very humid, the average annual temperature is 18 degrees Celsius, and the average annual rainfall is 1,700 millimeters spread over 210 hectares. The park consists of 80% primary forests and 13% secondary forests, subject to the impact of human activity. The special reserve is dedicated to the protection of the largest Malagasy lemur, the indri. An orchid park is also open to the public. There are three campsites and a hotel in the park.

Isalo National Park

Isalo is located in the south of Madagascar in Ranohira. The park extends over an area of 81,54 hectares. Isalo is home to a population dominated by the Bara ethnic group mixed with communities of various origins who settled there because of the exploitation of sapphire in the surrounding area of Ilakaka. The territory is also a historically rich archaeological site, as it retains the continental plate connecting Madagascar with Africa, two million years ago.

A true tourist attraction for its geomorphological singularities, at the same time varied and unique in the world, it is the most visited site on the island. The park is of rock structure that is globally shaped by the erosion of reddish mountainous sandstones dating back to the Jurassic era of 200 million years ago, extending for nearly 100 kilometers in the north-south direction. Its varied sculptural form is a chain of deep canyons, peaks up to 200 meters high, masses of granite and rock blocks of unstable appearance. There are currently 82 species of birds, 33 reptiles, 15 amphibians, and 14 mammals including seven primates. Among these, there are the maki, sifaka, and varika. As far as tourists are concerned, the main attractions are the pedestrian routes which, from the outset, are reminiscent of a decorative façade of the Far West.

Tsingy of Bemaraha National Park

Located in the western part of Madagascar, about 200 kilometers from Morondava, the protected area of Bemaraha covers more than 150,000 hectares. It is home to the famous Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, one of the most spectacular landscapes of Madagascar and even of the world. The famous Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is the first tourist attraction that makes the western destination of Madagascar a popular destination for tourists.

Indeed, the Tsingy are a group of limestone rocks whose formation began several million years ago when the sea still covered the region. Thus, corals and shells have stacked and welded together to form thick layers which have subsequently raised. In the open air, the limestone cracked to give rise to diaclases and canyons. Rainwater that has an acid characteristic has also contributed to erosion by shaping tapered slats and deep tunnels with concretions on the surface.

UNESCO Haritage

It is a true limestone cathedral characterizing one of the most spectacular natural landscapes of the Great Island and even of the world, hence it’s inscription to the world natural heritage and national cultural heritage of UNESCO. Tsingy de Bemaraha is strongly regarded as a place of endemism because of their richness in plant and animal species where scientists have recorded a high level of endemism of around 80-90%.

Refuge of endemic animal

The protected area of Bemaraha is a true refuge for rare and endemic animal species. There are 17 rare species of reptiles, including the very small chameleon scientifically called the Brookesia perarmata and a species of rodents, Nesomys lambertoni, found only in the park. There are also 11 species of lemurs, six species of birds, and two species of local endemic amphibians. On the flora side, the park abounds with more than 600 species of plants, but the baobabs, aloes and flamboyants remain the first stars.

The climate is tropical, but cooler in the highlands (dropping as low as 5°C at night in July/August in Antananarivo and Andasibe). The dry season is March to October continuing into November in most areas. The east coast is best March-May and September-November, January-March is cyclone season. The south west area is hot, dry and semi-arid. March-April is the best time for flowers and reptiles. November (spring) is generally the best time for wildlife and birds, but lemurs can be viewed all year round. Seasonal weather patterns can be unpredictable

  • Antananarivo : 1300m
  • Andasibe : 964m
  • Isalo : Varies from 800m to 1200m
  • Morondava : 22m maximum and an average altitude above sea level of 6m
  • Bekopaka : 334m

HT Agency Tours offers torches for nocturnal wildlife walks, a water bottle. Please bring camera film (and spare batteries), binoculars and a beach towel and swimwear. Rain proof pants are very handy for walks in the rainforest. Walking poles maybe useful in Ranomafana NP and Andasibe NP. Lightweight walking bootshoes and trainers is recommended. Clothing should be lightweight, but a warm sweater or jacket is advisable as nights at altitude and under desert conditions can be very cold, even in summer and especially in July to September. Rainwear is highly recommended on all tours for the occasional shower. Warmer layers will be required during the winter months.

Madagascar: An entry visa is required by USA citizens and can be obtained on arrival. The visa is chargeable at 40USD and issued for 30 days. Please ensure your policy includes medical emergency helicopter evacuation in the event of illness or injury and covers the entire duration of your holiday. If you are trekking at altitude, please ensure that there is no upper altitude limit which may limit or exclude cover for your trip.

Nothing compulsory, but we recommend protection against malaria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A plus, Polio and diptheria. Please note that all travellers aged over 9 months old that have travelled from or have transit via a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, will need to present a Yellow Fever certificate at immigration/borders in Madagascar for inspection. Consult your travel clinic for latest advice on different prophylaxis available against malaria.

We recommend

Following the advice given by the Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, we strongly recommend the wearing long sleeved shirts and the liberal application of insect repellent as a precautionary measure to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. These precautions should be taken at all times as the mosquitoes are also active during daylight hours. Please check the latest requirements with your travel clinic or doctor prior to departure.

Why visit Madagascar?

Remember ‘Madagascar’ – the movie, which captured our hearts not so long ago. Who can forget King Julien – the comic lemur singing ‘I Like to move it, move it’!

Lemurs, baobab trees, rainforests, unique rock forests, deserts, hiking, diving, whale watching, dreamy beaches: Madagascar is a dream destination for wildlife and nature enthusiasts.

To quote Sir David Attenborough: “Madagascar is a curious wonderland. It’s an unrepeatable experiment, a set of animals and plants evolving in isolation for over 60 million years. We’re still trying to unravel its mysteries.”

You will realize how true this quote is when you journey through the ‘8 th Continent’ of the world. The flora and fauna of Madagascar is absolutely unique due to its isolated evolution – a nature sanctuary as well as the cradle of endemic species. The Madagascan landscape is equally fascinating, with terrains ranging from tropical jungles, palm-fringed white sand beaches to the knife-edged karst Tsingys ‘stone forests’, to dry arid landscapes.

The uniqueness of this place makes it a one-in-a-kind destination and an essential bucket list item for the discerning wildlife traveller. Why visit? Let’s make a case:

Exotic Wildlife

The long isolation of this island has created some unique species of animals. Lemurs are the most famous inhabitans (courtesy Dreamworks), but then they are not the only animals worth sighting on this island; it is home to many unique and ‘weird’ animals and plants; the eerie-looking fossa colourful and camouflaged chameleons (including the world’s smallest chameleon), oddly shaped insects (hissing cockroaches and the Giraffe Weevil), vivid frogs, colourful birds– the list goes on.

Spectacular Landscapes

Matching the incredible specie diversity, the landscapes are equally varied within a small region. Go from rainforests (east) to the deserts (south west) – Sandstone canyons, limestone karsts, mountains, rivers cutting across gorges, forests of every kind – rain, dry, spiny and of course the spectacular coastal regions – the palm fringed white sand beaches!

The most iconic photograph of Madagascar has to be the Avenue of Baobabs!

Diverse Flora

Trees and plants are just as impressive, be they the distinctively shaped baobabs, the fanning  ravinala  (travellers’ palm), the hundreds of orchids, the spiny forests of the desert south or the wet tropical rainforests of the east. Remember that 83% of the floral species are endemic to this island.

Pristine, Dreamy beaches

The beaches and islands in this Indian Ocean island will make the beach junkies cry! Go to the popular region northern region of Nosy Be or the less crowded island of Ille Saint Marie.

The Rock Forests

The Tsingy rock forests are one of the most spectacular (and unique) landscapes of Madagascar with its network of rifts, crevasses, and limestone blocks that are carved in sharped blades. A visit to Madagascar is not complete without visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Tsingy de Bemaraha.

Antananarivo

Called “the City of thousands, referring to 1000 treasures to discover,  the capital city of Antananarivo (Tana for short) is a potpourri of eating, shopping, culture and history. (and of course, the traffic!). Explore the various restaurant options to taste true Malagasy cuisine here.

  • Watch Lemurs in the wild: The only place in the world, where you can find wild lemurs – a primate – found across the island.
  • Discover exotic mammals, insects and chameleons: Do remember that nearly 70-80% of the flora and fauna on Madagascar are endemic meaning that they are found only in Madagascar.
  • Sunset in the Avenue of Baobabs: The most iconic image of Madagascar – the Avenue of Baobabs.
  • Whale watching in Ile St. Marie: Watch the gentle giants – the Humpback whales on their annual migration route.
  • Do nothing on pristine, dreamy, palm fringed golden beaches in Nosy Be and Ile St. Marie.
  • Marine adventures around Nosy Be: diving, snorkeling, kite-surfing, parasailing in azure waters.
  • Climb the Tsingy of Bemaraha and swing on the suspension bridge! Not for the faint hearted!
  • Boat Trip on the Tsiribihina River: Why take a boring flight to the west? Rough it out on an old tobacco transport boat and camp on the river beaches!
  • 4X4 on any unpaved road in Madagascar interiors! Or if you are more adventurous – drive along on the RN5! Cowards call it the worst road in the world and the brave-hearts call it an adventure!
  • Dhow or Canoe cruises (Catamaran or Sail boats for the less adventurous) in the north.
  • Birdwatching : “Only” 258 species – but a staggering 150 species are endemic! Good way to bump up your life list!
  • Gorge on the Malagasy Cuisine a potpourri of influences of South East Asia, Africa, India, China and Europe! An insight into the history and diversity of the people here!

Things to note

best time to visit

Madagascar is a large island with different landscapes and eco-systems. So the question of time would also depend on the places you want to visit. The dry season is from April to October (winter). The ideal time for most destinations would be April to mid December  (but be prepared for low availabilities and high prices!). For Whale Watchers – the best time would be June to September during the northern migration of the Humpbacks. For good animal sightings – the time just during the first rains i.e. November would be the best. For diving and snorkelling, August – October would be a great time!

The eastern part and the Central highlands (colder) are the ‘wet’ areas, the west is warm and dry, the north is hot and humid and the south can be semi-arid. As a rule, avoid the summer rainy season from November (or maybe later to January) to March – you will also encounter vicious cyclones especially during February.

Our travellers say.

Radhika & Amit Beyonder Traveller - Africa - Kenya & Tanzania

As our fantastic guide Elijah put it, Kenya gave us a taste of the “Real Africa”. And what a taste it was. It has taken me almost a month after our trip to truly put our experience into words. Beyonder went beyond and more- Srini, and Anand – to you a big thanks! ”More(+)” We experienced safari game drives, the Masai and the Samburu reserves, the Big 5, the beautiful sunsets and vastness of the savannas in a spectacular beauty that we can only attribute to the uniqueness of Kenya. The glorious beauty of the mountains at a distance and the sun rising and setting in the horizon with the silhouette of the giraffes is an image that has stayed with me. The lovely hotels, and service, and the fresh vegetables and food at the resorts were all superb. We planned a trip through Beyonder on the recommendation of a friend, and I have to say it was the best decision we made. From when we landed at Nairobi, through traveling to the different reserves and lodges, the game drives, and experiencing the country, the arrangements were flawless. The itinerary, the choice of hotels and lodges, the attention to detail and the host of little insights and advice that come from an intimate knowledge of the country and empathy for the traveler – all that combined to give us easily the best holiday experience we’ve had so far. Right at the end, when our flight back home was cancelled because of a technical flaw and we found ourselves with an extra day in Nairobi, Srini and co. went above and beyonder (!) to make sure we had a great experience, and we were able to put our unexpected extra day to good use. I would unhesitatingly recommend Beyonder to anyone looking for an away from the ordinary ”Less(-)”

Mandar Salunkhe Beyonder Traveller - Africa - Kenya & Tanzania

You handheld us right from the initial itinerary planning and air ticket bookings. Your expert advice was surely valued and this made sure that our trip started in the right way. The accommodations as well as the tour partner at Kenya were great and quite up to our expectations. ”More(+)” This was probably one of the best tours we had done together as a family. Africa’s wilderness makes you realize why animals should be free rather than in a zoo. The energy and vitality shown by the free animals is seldom seen by zoo animals, and hence makes this an unforgettable experience. This is the Lion King and National Geographic documentaries all rolled in one. The only thing missing is David Attenborough explaining about the animal albeit the tour guide arranged by you did quite a good job with his Attenborough style explanations on the numerous animals that we saw. Africa’s wilderness should be a must visit place in everyone’s tourism bucket list, and Beyonder is doing a damn good job in making it happen. ”Less(-)”
