Aurora limps back to shipyard after aborted cruise

P&O's stricken £200m cruise ship Aurora was last night slowly sailing back to Germany for repairs after limping to her home port of Southampton early yesterday to drop off 1,647 passengers.

Her maiden voyage to the Mediterranean was abandoned after a propeller shaft overheated 16 hours into the journey. The 76,000-tonne vessel is due to arrive at the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg on Friday. The cancelled two-week cruise will cost P&O's insurers an estimated £6m in compensation to passengers who will be offered a full refund plus a free cruise.

Some passengers expressed disappointment. Jill Turner, 37, from Bishop Auckland, Co Durham, said: "There was a general feeling that there should have been more rigorous sea trials before the voyage. People are disappointed but the compensation package is very generous."

Renee Tuftin, 70, from Southgate, London, said she knew the ship would be unlucky when the champagne bottle failed to break during the naming ceremony. She said the free alcohol offered by P&O had kept passengers' spirits up.

The ship's captain, Steve Burgoine, said the sea trials had been rigorous. "But who knows when you are going to get a flat tyre?"

Gwyn Hughes, managing director of P&O Cruises, said: "We are gutted. We are obviously disappointed, but not as disappointed as the passengers who were on board." He was confident that Aurora's next cruise, scheduled for May 15, will go ahead as planned.

Aurora is a mid-sized cruise ship, with an overall length of 270.0 metres (885 ft 10 in), moulded beam of 32.2 metres (105 ft 8 in) and draught of 7.90 metres (25 ft 11 in). Her gross tonnage is 76,152 and her deadweight tonnage is 8,486 tonnes . The ship can accommodate up to 1,878 passengers in 939 cabins, with a maximum crew complement of 936. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Aurora is powered by four MAN B&W 14V48/60 medium-speed diesel engines with a total power output of 58,800 kilowatts. These engines provide power for various ship's services and for two STN AEG propulsion motors. The propulsion motors drive two propellers , each of which measures 5.8 metres (19 ft 0 in) in diameter. For manoeuvring, the ship has three bow thrusters and a stern thruster. The ship's service speed is 24 knots (44 km/h; 28 mph), though during sea trials she reached a maximum speed of 29 knots (54 km/h; 33 mph). [6] [7]

Aurora was designed to appeal to the British market, and was built as an extended and improved version of P&O Cruises' Oriana . The ship's hull and superstructure were designed to be attractive to this market with features similar to more traditional ocean liners , such as her raked, tiered stern. [5]

The ship's passenger cabins vary in size and facilities. Outside cabins, with either a window or a balcony in the ship's side, compose 69 percent of passenger cabins on board. Passengers may book inside or outside cabins, cabins with balconies, suites or one of the ship's two penthouse suites. The two penthouse suites are situated at the forward end of the ship and provide accommodation on two levels. [6] [8]

Aurora ' s passenger facilities include numerous bars, public rooms and entertainment venues. These include a cinema , a theatre , a nightclub , a casino and a number of bars . The ship also has a spa and gym , as well as three swimming pools . Outside, passengers may use the promenade deck or the upper decks. Traditional deck games such as shuffleboard and deck quoits may be played, and a tennis court and golf simulator are available for passenger use. [3]

Passengers are allocated a table in one of the ship's two dining rooms—the "Alexandria" and "Medina" restaurants. Passengers may also choose to dine in "The Horizon" buffet restaurant, "The Beach House" or "Sindu", an alternative restaurant providing a fusion of Indian and British cuisine. "Sindu" is run in partnership with celebrity chef Atul Kochhar . [9]

Construction and naming

Aurora was built by Meyer Werft in Germany. Her keel was laid in December 1998 and she was launched in January 2000. She was delivered to P&O Cruises in April 2000. [4] [5] [10] [11] P&O Princess wanted Aurora to be built in the UK but there were no British shipyards left large enough to fulfil the order.

The ship was christened on 27 April 2000, by HRH Princess Anne. The champagne bottle did not shatter when it hit the ship's side and fell unopened into the sea. This type of occurrence is considered a bad omen among seafarers, and this incident has been blamed for the numerous setbacks that Aurora has encountered throughout her career. [12] [13] [14] [15]

Maiden voyage

Aurora departed on her maiden voyage on 1 May 2000—a 14-night cruise to various Mediterranean destinations. The ship's crew identified a major technical problem, and the cruise was abandoned after 16 hours at sea. The cause was a propeller shaft bearing which had been damaged by overheating and required urgent repair while the ship was out of service. [13] [16]

On 3 May 2000, the ship returned to Southampton, where passengers disembarked. Passengers expressed disappointment about the incident but reported that they were mainly satisfied with P&O Cruises' response to the situation. P&O Cruises offered all passengers a full refund and compensation package, worth about GBP£6 million. [17]

Aurora sailed to Blohm + Voss in Germany, where repairs were carried out. The ship returned to service on 15 May 2000, to undertake her second scheduled cruise to the Canary Islands . [18]

Pamela Dream rescue effort

In March 2001, Aurora was sailing through the Taiwan Strait on her first world cruise when she was called to assist Pamela Dream , a Cambodian registered ship crewed by Russian officers and crew which had capsized in rough seas. Aurora launched her fast rescue boats to retrieve survivors from the water. The crew were able to retrieve three survivors. A crewmember described the sea state as "very rough, with waves of about 5 m (16 ft)". One of Aurora ' s propellers was damaged by flotsam , an inspection of the propeller was carried out in Singapore where it was polished by divers. The damaged propeller was eventually replaced in dry dock in Southampton in December 2002. [19] [20]

World Trade Center attack connection

On the morning of 11 September 2001, Aurora was positioned approximately 80 miles south of New York City and 20 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey while a conference of IT executives and vendors hosted by Richmond Events was occurring on board. The ship had embarked from Pier 88 in New York City on the evening of 9 September. Following the attacks on the World Trade Center that morning there were concerns for the safety of the British owned ship. U.S. Coast Guard helicopters and vessels briefly protected the Aurora until it was determined that the vessel was not in danger. The ship was planned to return to Manhattan on 12 September but due to the closure of New York Harbour the ship instead steamed at full speed to Boston to disembark its passengers before the Port of Boston shut also. Originally the US Coastguard requested that Aurora left US waters but with so many New Yorkers aboard and with their connections to the Twin Towers special dispensation was made to allow the ship into Boston to disembark US citizens. Many of the executives on board were from the banking and financial services industries and it was estimated that as many as 50 executives worked in Tower 1 and Tower 2 of the World Trade Center and adjacent buildings. Reports from conference attendees were that several executives onboard were in communication via cell phones with their staffs in both Towers 1 and 2 who eventually perished in the collapse of those buildings.

Norovirus breakout

During a cruise around the eastern Mediterranean in October 2003, over 500 passengers suffered stomach infections caused by the highly contagious Norovirus . During the outbreak, the ship's passengers were denied the right to land at Piraeus , Greece , as the ship was held in quarantine . Aurora departed from Piraeus on 31 October having loaded medical supplies. [11] [21] [22] [23]

maiden voyage of mv aurora (2000) reaction paper

On arrival in Dubrovnik , Croatia , a health inspector boarded the vessel and ordered the sick passengers to remain in their cabins "as a precautionary measure". Those unaffected by the virus were allowed to leave the ship. There was uncertainty as to whether the ship would be allowed to dock in Gibraltar , the next scheduled port. [23]

Aurora was allowed to dock in Gibraltar on 3 November. A small number of passengers who were still recovering were required to stay on board. Passengers who went ashore were required to leave their passports behind. One passenger had died from a heart attack, unrelated to the norovirus breakout. The Spanish government decided to close the border between Gibraltar and Spain on advice from its health ministry. It was reopened a few hours after Aurora departed from Gibraltar. The incident caused some diplomatic tension between the United Kingdom and Spain. [22] [24] [25] [26]

Aurora returned to Southampton on 6 November, where passengers disembarked. There was a widespread expression of disappointment, with some passengers threatening legal action against P&O Cruises. P&O Cruises said that while they would not offer a standard compensation package, cases would be considered individually. [24] [27] [28] [29]

World cruise 2005

In January 2005, Aurora began a 103-day world cruise with more than 1,700 passengers on board. While bound for Madeira , the ship repeatedly had problems with one of the propulsion motors. Since the problems could not be solved quickly, the world cruise was abandoned. During the ship's time waiting in Southampton, passengers were offered free drinks in the onboard bars and were able to exit the ship at any time. Passengers were also permitted to cancel their booking for a full refund. After P&O Cruises cancelled the cruise, the company donated all of the food purchased for the trip to local charities around Southampton. Aurora set sail for a dry dock in Bremerhaven , Germany, where her damaged motor would be taken out and replaced with one destined for another ship under construction at the time. Her broken motor was taken apart, reconditioned, and placed in an unknown cruise ship. [30]

The planned world cruise hence affectionately became known as a voyage around the Isle of Wight or "the largest ever Isle of Wight ferry". The cruise was also dubbed the "World Booze Cruise" as the Company offered free drinks, free excursions and a 50 percent discount for the 2007 World Cruise after reimbursing all the fares for the 2005 World Cruise. P&O Cruises also arranged for entertainers such as Elaine Paige and Paul Daniels to come on board. [31]

The cancellation of the cruise is reported to have cost the company GBP £25 million. [32]

World cruise 2009

During the 2009 World Cruise, Aurora again experienced problems with her propulsion system shortly after leaving Sydney , Australia. The ship continued to Auckland , New Zealand, to undergo repairs. The ship left Auckland for Hawaii on 12 March 2009. More than 600 passengers on the 93-night cruise attended an emergency meeting and formed a protest committee after the ship failed to dock at three ports in New Zealand and at two Pacific Islands. While P&O Cruises made offers of compensation, some passengers branded these offers "derisory" and threatened legal action against the company. [14] [15] [33]

In 2014, Aurora was repainted in P&O's new house livery with a stylised Union Flag on the bows, and the funnel painted dark blue instead of buff.

The ship was later heavily rebuilt as a cruise ship, and sailed under the names SS Fairwind , SS Sitmar Fairwind , SS Dawn Princess and SS Albatros before being scrapped in 2004. She was renamed SS Genoa for her last voyage.

<i>Norwegian Epic</i> Cruise ship

<i>Queen Mary 2</i> British 21st-century transatlantic ocean liner

RMS Queen Mary 2 ( QM2 ) is a British transatlantic ocean liner. She has served as the flagship of Cunard Line since succeeding Queen Elizabeth 2 in 2004. The ship was officially named Queen Mary 2 by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004 after the first RMS  Queen Mary of 1936. With the retirement of Queen Elizabeth 2 in 2008, Queen Mary 2 is the only ocean liner in service in the world. It has a regular service between Southampton, England, and New York City, United States, and an annual world cruise.

<i>Jewel</i>-class cruise ship Class of cruise ships

The Jewel class is a class of cruise ships operated by the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and was built by Meyer Werft of Germany. The Jewel class became NCL's largest ships, until the construction of Norwegian Epic , at 153,000 GT, in 2009 at STX Europe in St. Nazaire, which is also owned by NCL. The lead ship, Norwegian Jewel was delivered in August 2005 and the last vessel, Norwegian Gem was delivered in October 2007; however, the second ship of the class Norwegian Jade was originally intended for NCL America. After sailing for the line in two years (2006–2008), Pride of Hawaii proved to be unsuccessful as the intra-Hawaiian market could not profitably accommodate more than one cruise ship. In 2008, NCL decided to transfer Pride of Hawaii to their fleet, leaving Pride of America as the sole vessel sailing the intra-Hawaii market. After receiving her current NCL livery, Pride of Hawaii was rechristened as Norwegian Jade and sailed for NCL in 2008.

MS <i>Iona</i> P&O Cruise ship

MS Iona is an Excellence -class cruise ship in service for P&O Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc. Built by German shipbuilder Meyer Werft in Papenburg, she was delivered in October 2020 at a cost of £730 million. At 184,089 GT, Iona became the largest cruise ship commissioned for P&O and the British market upon delivery until sister ship Arvia was delivered in 2022. Iona was floated out on 18 February 2020 and delivered eight months later on 9 October amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed her debut by more than a year until 7 August 2021, when she sailed her maiden voyage from Southampton.

<i>Norwegian Encore</i> Ship of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)

Norwegian Encore is a Breakaway Plus-class cruise ship operated by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). She is the fourth Breakaway Plus-class ship in the fleet, following sister ships Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Escape , and Norwegian Joy, and debuted in November 2019.

Curse of the Aurora as passengers revolt

Angry cruise ship passengers have staged a revolt on the luxury British cruise ship the Aurora after the vessel visited just two ports in 22 days.

Rescuers searching for a British woman who fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Mediterranean have recovered a body, P&O Cruises said.

Holidaymakers compared their round-the-world voyage on luxury ship Aurora to being in prison after engine problems forced P&O Cruises to cut five stops.

It is the latest in a long string of bad luck to have hit the ship since the naming ceremony bottle failed to smash.

More than 600 passengers on the 93-night cruise attended an emergency meeting and formed a protest committee after missing three ports in New Zealand and two Pacific Islands.

P&O said passengers, who each paid upwards of £8,599 for the cruise, will receive compensation including £500 and a refund of the cost of four days' cruising.

But the protest group – dubbed the Aurora Committee – is now threatening legal action to compensate for the cruise, which some passengers had saved for 20 years to afford.

It is just the latest in a history of failings and bad luck for the ship after the naming ceremony bottle failed to smash.

Committee member Jennifer Dunthorne said: "This failure to visit three ports in New Zealand and two Pacific Islands has turned this cruise ship into a prison for some.

"Only visiting two ports in 22 days is not what I saved for 20 years to do.

"This beautiful ship which has been the pride of the P&O fleet has become a red hot bed of distress, frustration and anger.

"So many people worked hard for so many years to afford this cruise. It is truly unforgivable."

Aurora has had a chequered history since she was launched in 2000.

At her naming ceremony, by the Princess Royal, the champagne bottle did not break as the vessel was blessed, which was considered a bad omen.

On her maiden voyage, the ship broke down in the Bay of Biscay and had to return to port.

Passengers were compensated to the tune of 6 million pounds.

In 2003 the norovirus bug affected a high number of passengers.

And in January 2005 P&O cancelled a much-delayed world cruise because of propulsion system problems on the 200 million pounds ship.

The 1,759 passengers on board, who had each paid up to 40,000 pounds, were all set to leave Southampton for a 103-day "Grand Voyage of the World".

But the vessel had only made it to the Isle of Wight when engineers found a fault.

Last year hundreds of passengers had to undergo tests on board Aurora to see whether they had contracted a deadly strain of hepatitis.

A health probe was launched after seven passengers tested positive for hepatitis E.

The latest problems on the 76,000-tonne Aurora, whose home port is Southampton, Hants, began within hours of leaving Sydney Harbour when it developed engine problems.

The ship limped to Auckland, New Zealand, where the saga continued, with the 1,736 passengers on-board being told each day for six days the ship could not leave port.

This meant missing out on stops at Wellington, Napier, Bay of Islands, and Mooréa and Tahiti in French Polynesia.

A second committee meeting with the ship's captain Paul Brown was due to be held on Saturday night.

Mrs Dunthorne said: "P&O offered some free drinks and derisory payments to compensate for shattered dreams.

"Passengers are outraged at the company's apparent sole concern to concentrate on driving forward the ailing ship to pick up the next unsuspecting passengers on April 13 in Southampton by abandoning much of the cruise they had contracted to deliver."

A spokeswoman for P&O said: "Having sustained damage to a thrust bearing, Aurora sailed from Auckland at 5pm on Thursday 12 March after a delay of five days to enable repairs to be undertaken.

"We greatly value the support and loyalty of our passengers and very much regret the disruption to Aurora's World Cruise.

"In recognition of this we have since offered a compensation package which we believe to be a fair reflection of the disruption to the cruise, the actual amount of which will vary depending upon the fare paid."

After leaving Auckland on Wednesday, Aurora took the most direct course to Honolulu from where she is expected to continue as scheduled to San Francisco and then on to Southampton.

MV Aurora (2000) explained

Specifications.

Aurora is a mid-sized cruise ship, with an overall length of 270m (890feet), moulded beam of 32.2m (105.6feet) and draught of 7.9m (25.9feet). Her gross tonnage is 76,152 and her deadweight tonnage is 8,486 tonne s. The ship can accommodate up to 1,878 passengers in 939 cabins, with a maximum crew complement of 936. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Aurora is powered by 4 four-stroke 14-cylinder MAN B&W 14V48/60 (48 cm Bore, 60 cm Stroke) medium-speed diesel engine s with a total power output of over 78,800 BHP. These engines provide power for various ship's services and for two STN AEG propulsion motors. The propulsion motors drive two propellers, each of which measures 5.8m (19feet) in diameter.Fuel consumption at 24 knots is around 300 litres of heavy oil per Nautical Mile. For manoeuvring, the ship has three bow thruster s and a stern thruster. The ship's service speed is, though during sea trials she reached a maximum speed of . [6]

Aurora was designed to appeal to the British market, and was built as an extended and improved version of P&O Cruises' Oriana . The ship's hull and superstructure were designed to be attractive to this market with features similar to more traditional ocean liner s, such as her raked, tiered stern.

Construction and naming

Aurora was built by Meyer Werft in Germany. Her keel was laid in December 1998 and she was launched in January 2000. She was delivered to P&O Cruises in April 2000. [7] [8]

The ship was christened on 27 April 2000, by Princess Anne. The champagne bottle did not shatter when it hit the ship's side and fell unopened into the sea. This type of occurrence is considered a bad omen among seafarers, and this incident has been blamed for the numerous setbacks that Aurora has encountered throughout her career. [9] [10] [11] [12]

Aurora sailed to Blohm + Voss in Germany, where repairs were carried out. The ship returned to service on 15 May 2000, to undertake her second scheduled cruise to the Canary Islands . [15]

Pamela Dream rescue effort

In March 2001, Aurora was sailing through the Taiwan Strait on her first world cruise when she was called to assist Pamela Dream , a Cambodia n registered ship crewed by Russian officers and crew which had capsized in rough seas. Aurora launched her fast rescue boats to retrieve survivors from the water. The crew were able to retrieve three survivors. A crewmember described the sea state as "very rough, with waves of about 5m (16feet)". One of Aurora s propellers was damaged by flotsam , an inspection of the propeller was carried out in Singapore where it was polished by divers. The damaged propeller was eventually replaced in dry dock in Southampton in December 2002. [16] [17]

Norovirus breakout

During a cruise around the eastern Mediterranean in October 2003, over 500 passengers suffered stomach infections caused by the highly contagious Norovirus . During the outbreak, the ship's passengers were denied the right to land at Piraeus , Greece, as the ship was held in quarantine . Aurora departed from Piraeus on 31 October having loaded medical supplies. [18] [19] [20] On arrival in Dubrovnik , Croatia , a health inspector boarded the vessel and ordered the sick passengers to remain in their cabins "as a precautionary measure". Those unaffected by the virus were allowed to leave the ship. There was uncertainty as to whether the ship would be allowed to dock in Gibraltar , the next scheduled port. [20]

[21] [22] [23]

Aurora returned to Southampton on 6 November, where passengers disembarked. There was a widespread expression of disappointment, with some passengers threatening legal action against P&O Cruises. P&O Cruises said that while they would not offer a standard compensation package, cases would be considered individually. [24] [25]

Aurora set sail for a dry dock in Bremerhaven , Germany, where her damaged motor would be removed and replaced. [26]

The cancellation of the cruise is reported to have cost the company GBP £25 million. [28]

In 2014, Aurora was repainted in P&O's new house livery with a stylised Union Flag on the bows, and the funnel painted blue instead of the customary P&O yellow.

She underwent a further dry dock refurbishment during March and April 2019. [30]

During the 2020 coronavirus layoff , the vessel spent some time anchored off Bournemouth . [31]

On 28 March 2023, P&O Cruises announced that it will be updating the guest areas on Aurora including new balcony chairs, chairs in cabins and furniture on the open decks. These changes are expected to be completed by May 2023. [32]

P&O Cruises has also announced that Aurora will have a refit in April 2025.

Sylvia earle review, review of sylvia earle.

The 2022-built MS Sylvia Earle cruise ship is an ice-strengthened (polar class 1A / PC6) expedition vessel inaugurated in November 2022 (postponed from October 2021 due to delayed delivery).

The boat is owned by the Danish company SunStone Maritime Group (via its USA-based subsidiary SunStone Ships Inc) and is currently operated under charter by Aurora Expeditions ( fleet /1991-founded Australian company specializing in Arctic and Antarctic cruisetours).

The vessel (IMO number 9872327) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000867) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Sylvia Earle is the 7th in a series of ten "Ulstein CX103" design (Infinity-class) expedition vessels, with sisterships Greg Mortimer (2019-Sept, fleetmate), Ocean Victory (2021-March), Ocean Explorer (2021-Jan), Ocean Odyssey (2022-Oct), Ocean Albatros (2022-Oct), Ocean Discoverer (2025-August). Four more units were intended but eventually canceled and replaced by the new BOUNDLESS Class boats.

The patented ULSTEIN X-BOW design is one of the unusual for expedition ship features. The vessel also utilizes the latest technologies in naval engineering. The ship is technically managed by Cruise Management International ( Miami -based passenger vessel/fleet management company). CMI Leisure Miami handles hotel operations.

MS Sylvia Earle cruise ship (Aurora Expeditions)

Aurora Expeditions cooperated with the US-based shipowner SunStone Ships Inc to construct a custom-designed vessel for expedition-type voyages in the polar regions, providing the industry's best adventure travel vacation experiences and modern amenities.

Aurora Expeditions is among the pioneers of polar expedition cruising and a leading adventure travel company on the Australian market. The company was one of the first to introduce ship travel to numerous remote destinations in the polar regions. Established in 1991, in 2008 Aurora Expeditions was sold and the new owners remained true to the original expedition spirit. Initially offering small-group cruises to Antarctica, Aurora Expeditions now also operates expedition voyages to Norway's Svalbard Islands, Russia's Far East, Greenland, Papua New Guinea, Africa (Chobe River safari cruises in Botswana), Amazon River.

Ship technology

The major advantage of the patented "ULSTEIN X-BOW" design is the ship's ability to navigate with improved stability in comparison to traditional bow-design vessels. X-BOW vessels are less subject to vertical motions (induced by waves), continuing on course smoothly while maintaining high speeds. The ship's engines use less fuel, which results in reduced air emissions and fuel consumption.

The ship is equipped with the latest propulsion and return-to-port systems. It also has top-notch dynamic positioning technology - computer-controlled systems allowing automatic maintenance of the vessel's position through its own propulsion units (thrusters and propellers). This allows stable floating while maintaining the necessary stability for launching watercraft - and without using anchors.

With the highest for passenger vessel ice-class 1A (Polar Class 6 / PC6), MS Sylvia Earle has icebreaking capacity 1 m (3 ft) and complies with the maritime industry's latest polar code requirements and specifications. The boat offers unprecedented levels of safety and environmental protection. Exclusively designed for polar cruises, the ship allows Aurora Expeditions to continue to provide the company's authentic, top-quality small-ship travel experience.

For the interior designs of this entire series of SunStone-owned ships was contracted the Weston Florida-based company Tomas Tillberg Design. A new design concept implemented on the Sylvia Earle ship is the two-level (2-decks high) glass-enclosed Bar Lounge located at the bow (forward on decks 5-6).

Shipboard facilities

The cruise ship features dedicated outdoor observation areas (including fore-located Observation Deck with two Hydraulic Platforms / Viewing Platforms accessed from Deck 5 ), a stern marina (watersports platform serving the company's sea kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving programs), a fleet of 15x Zodiacs (large-capacity motorized boats used for passenger transportation - tendering and landings).

The aft-located Zodiac loading platform (accessed from either side on Deck 3 ) is a new design launching platform that allows easier and faster boarding for shoreside transportation. Sun Deck (top-deck forward) is furnished with premium garden furniture (sofas, armchairs, sun loungers) and used for both relaxation and wildlife viewing. At the top two decks' bow is the Observation Lounge (2-level lounge served by its own Bar) and midship on top deck is the funnel (with four smokestacks/engine exhaust pipes).

Other facilities include Medical Centre (Infirmary), Change Room (Mudroom), Bar Lounge (lecture theater forward on Deck 5), Dining Room Restaurant, Ship Shop, Lobby area (Reception Desk), Library, Art Room, Wellness Centre (Fitness, Spa, Sauna Room, Treatment Rooms for Massages), Lower Sun Deck (Deck 7 aft, with lifeboats and liferafts), Upper Sun Deck (Deck 8 midship, with sunbathing area and two whirlpool hot tubs).

Four Zodiac Docks (2 on each side, hull access at sea level) serve as boat launching platforms.

Decks and Cabins

Sylvia Earle staterooms (71 total) allow max capacity 132 passengers. Most cabins (80% of all, except only Aurora cabins with portholes on Deck 3) are with a private, step-out balcony accessible from the living area via sliding, floor-ceiling glass door. Each balcony is furnished with a small table and two deck chairs. 60% of all cabins can be booked with triple occupancy (accommodate a 3rd person on pull-out couch/sofabed).

The boat has 8 decks , of which 6 are passenger-accessible and 4 with cabins.

Hotel beds (King-size or two twins, size 200 x 160 cm, ample under-bed storage space for suitcases), sleeping couch (sofabed), bedside cabinets, mirrored vanity (writing desk/dressing table) with chair, built-in dressers with drawers, mini-bar / refrigerator, 42-inch smart HDTV (local and satellite reception), phone (onboard communication only), digital clock/alarm, seating area (small table with 1 or 2 armchairs), spacious wardrobe (closet with hangers, drawers, electronic safe), individual climate control, medical emergency button.

Each stateroom has a private, full-size bathroom with shower / WC, hairdryer, premium bath amenities. Suites are in 3 categories - CS-Captain's, JS-Junior and BS-Balcony. These are the largest staterooms, with double-size balconies and offering extra amenities, such as in-room dining service (continental breakfast served on the balcony).

MS Sylvia Earle cruise ship (Aurora Expeditions)

The ship has a total of 20 pairs of connecting cabins (balconied rooms) that can be booked as one stateroom ("family cabin") for up to 6 persons. The boat has no wheelchair-accessible cabins (for passengers with disabilities).

Itineraries

In mid-November 2020, Aurora Expedition announced only the destinations planned to be included in Sylvia Earle's itinerary program 2021-2022. The vessel was to be deployed in Alaska, Pacific Mexico (Baja California) and Asia - including Russia's Far East and Indonesia's Raja Ampat islands and West Papua.

In late-January 2021, Aurora Expeditions announced voyages planned for 2022, with an Early-Bird promotion (25% discounted pricing). The sailings visited Raja Ampat Islands (Indonesia),  Kuril Islands Russia , Aleutian Islands (Alaska) , Baja California (Mexico), Greenland. A total of 12x new itineraries were included in the 2022 programs of the chartered ships Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle.

For MS Sylvia Earle were scheduled a 16-day Wrangel Island cruise (from Nome AK to Wrangel Island Nature Reserve Russia), a 9-day Gulf of California cruise (Baja California and the Sea of Cortez) and a 13-day Alaskan cruise that visits Haida Gwaii Islands (Canada) , Annette Island (Metlakatla) , Misty Fjords National Monument, St Lazaria Island (Saint Lazaria Wilderness, part of Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge).

In early-February 2021, Aurora Expeditions announced a themed voyage to be attended by Dr Sylvia Earle. The 9-day (May 4-12, 2022) "Baja California and the Sea of Cortez" itinerary is roundtrip from Port Pichilinque (Baja California Sur, Mexico).

For winter 2022-2023 Antarctic season, Aurora Expeditions scheduled for Sylvia Earle a total of 26 itineraries. Early bookings (made by March 31, 2021) received up to 30% discount.

In late May 2022, Aurora Expeditions announced that Sylvia Earle's Maiden Voyage is a 16-night "Subantarctic Safari" itinerary (November 4-20, 2022) during which the ship will be also officially christened. The inaugural cruise (from Valparaiso-Santiago Chile to Ushuaia Argentina ) visited the British territories Falkland Islands and South Sandwich Islands (South Georgia) . Sylvia Earle's inaugural voyage to Antarctica departed from Ushuaia on December 10th.

Sylvia Earle Wiki

Ship's name honors Sylvia Alice Earle - 1935-born US marine biologist, oceanographer, conservationist, world explorer, author (National Geographic books) and renowned lecturer. She was the first female chief scientist of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration / scientific agency within the US Department of Commerce). In 1998, Time Magazine named her "Hero for the Planet". Sylvia Earle is also a member of the 2011-founded activist group Ocean Elders dedicated to protecting the oceans and wildlife globally. Ocean Elders includes renowned scientists and many celebrities (including royalties, business tycoons, country leaders, pop artists).

On June 6, 2019, was signed the charter agreement between Aurora Expeditions (represented by Robert Halfpenny, company's Managing Director) and SunStone Ships Inc (represented by Niels-Erik Lund, the company's CEO).

Like all sisterships, Sylvia Earle was constructed in China - at CMIH-China Merchants Heavy Industry's Haimen Shipyard (in Jiangsu). The shipbuilding order for the 7th INFINITY Class unit was signed on May 29, 2019, in Hong Kong .

The vessel's construction started with the steel-cutting ceremony held on March 16, 2020, at CMIH Haimen Shipyard. On the same day was launched (floated out from drydock) the sistership Ocean Victory . The keel-laying ceremony was held on July 17, 2020. The ship's launch (float out) was on March 18, 2021. On the same day (at CMIH Haimen Shipyard) was held the keel-laying of Ocean Odyssey .

The South China Sea trials were successfully completed in the period October 17-22.

Sylvia Earle's official inauguration (christening ceremony led by godmother Sylvia Earle) was scheduled for February 15, 2023, before starting the 9-day "Antarctic Climate Expedition".

Unlike the sisterships, Sylvia Earle is the first in the "INFINITY ULSTEIN CX103" series to have bow-facing windows.

In late-February 2018, Aurora Expeditions announced a deal with "CMI Leisure Management" ( Miami -based company). The MS Sylvia Earle ship management (by CMI Leisure) includes staffing, hotel services, housekeeping, onboard food and beverages, purchasing supplies, logistics. CMI Leisure is among the world's leading companies providing small-ship management services. The company was first contracted by Aurora Expeditions for managing the SunStone-owned ship MS Polar Pioneer .

On March 16, 2017, SunStone Ships Inc signed the 4-shipbuilding agreement with the Hong Kong -based company "China Merchants Industry Holdings" (abbrev CMIH) for the construction of 4 vessels. SunStone is the world's largest (by tonnage) shipowner chartering exclusively expedition vessels to the cruise travel industry. , Since there is an option for an additional 6 units, by this so-called "ULSTEIN CX103" project could be built up to 10 vessels.

CMIH is a subsidiary of China Merchants Group (among the country's largest groups of companies). Following the contract with SunStone Ships, CMIH signed an agreement with the Norwegian company Ulstein Design (part of Ulstein Group, headquartered in Ulsteinvik Norway ) to supply the ship design and equipment package (ULSTEIN COM / Navigation Bridge system, and the integrated automation systems ULSTEIN IAS and ULSTEIN POWER), and also to supervise the shipyard works. For the ship's hotel design was contracted the Florida (USA)-based company Tomas Tillberg Design International (specializing in passenger vessel design). The design features Ulstein's patented X-BOW (providing fuel efficiency and significantly improved stability in rough weather). The vessel complies with the 2009-issued SOLAS requirements for "Virtual Anchorage" and "Safe Return to Port" (SRtP) implemented via Dynamic Positioning System (computer-controlled, automatically maintains ship's position) and Zero Speed Stabilizers (roll reduction system).

CMIH also signed an agreement with the Finnish company "IS Makinen Inc" to pre-fabricate the vessels' cabins, wet units and interior public spaces. For this purpose, Makinen established a cabin assembly plant and an interior workshop facility at the shipbuilding yard in China.

The project's shipbuilder is the subsidiary company "China Merchants Heavy Industry"/CMHI.

The ship is powered by 4x "Wartsila 20" diesel engines (two 6-cylinder plus two 8-cylinder) running on HFO (heavy fuel oil). The 6-cylinder engines are fitted with the exhaust gas cleaning system "Wartsila NOR" (NOx gas reducing technology). The propulsion system is diesel-electric (twin-screw) and designed by Brunvoll Volda AS (Volda Norway-based company specializing in marine propulsion, positioning and maneuvering systems). For the ULSTEIN CX103 project, Brunvoll contracted DMC (Damen Marine Components, Hardinxveld Giessendam Holland-based marine equipment manufacturer) to produce and supply the vessel's two rudders (model Van der Velden ATLANTIC) and two steering gear systems (model Van der Velden COMMANDER).

The USD 260 million shipbuilding order for the 4 boats was signed in June 2017. The first vessel of the series (Greg Mortimer) was scheduled for delivery in August 2019, followed by one ship every 6 months after.

Eventually, Sylvia Earle (together with Ocean Odyssey ) was delivered to SunStone in 2022, on October 21st, at CMHI Haimen.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
