Application for Vehicle Entry Permit Opens from 31 March 2022

Following the Multi-Ministry Taskforce’s announcement on the re-opening of land borders between Singapore and Malaysia, foreign-registered cars and motorcycles will be able to enter Singapore from 2359 hours, 31 March 2022.

2        Those driving foreign-registered vehicles into Singapore must ensure they have a valid Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP). Application of the VEP must be done online via VEP Digital Services on LTA's OneMotoring website.  They will not be allowed to apply for VEP/Autopass cards or update their road tax and motor insurance for their existing Autopass cards at Singapore’s land checkpoints. Instructions for applying for new VEP/ Autopass cards and updating road tax and insurance details for foreign-registered vehicles are as follow:

A.    To apply for new VEP/Autopass cards (https://onemotoring.lta.gov.sg) > Digital Services > Apply for VEP / Autopass Card; or

B.    To update the foreign-registered car and motorcycle road tax and motor insurance for existing valid Autopass cards (https://onemotoring.lta.gov.sg) > Digital Services > Update Road Tax and Insurance Validity for VEP (Foreign Cars and Motorcycles).

3        Drivers of foreign-registered vehicles must receive LTA’s VEP approval email before they travel. Those without Autopass cards must collect their Autopass cards at LTA’s Johor Bahru Service Centre (34, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak Susur 1, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor) before entering Singapore. Those with existing valid VEPs can continue to come across from 2359hrs, 31 March 2022.

4        Those who are unable to present valid Autopass cards together with LTA’s VEP approval emails at Singapore’s checkpoints will be turned back to Malaysia.

5        In anticipation of a significant increase in the volume of VEP applications, LTA will be conducting a system upgrade on its VEP Digital Services on LTA's OneMotoring website. The expected downtime will be from 24 March 2022 to 30 March 2022. Vehicle owners will be able to access the system from 31 March 2022.

6          Travellers are advised to plan at least two weeks ahead of their intended travel dates to allow sufficient time for VEP application and approval. Due to the expected increase in applications, we seek their understanding that LTA may take a longer time to process VEP applications during this period. Leisure travellers are encouraged to defer their plans to allow those who with essential travel needs, such as for employment or to reunite with their families, to make their trips.

This quick tour will bring you through the key enhancements.

Complete Guide: Singapore – Malaysia land travel from 1 April

Aaron Wong

Planning to cross the causeway? Here's all you need to know about the Singapore-Malaysia land border reopening, from 1 April 2022.

Singapore and Malaysia will reopen their land border from 1 April 2022, allowing fully vaccinated travellers to cross with no testing, quarantine or travel insurance requirement. This covers all modes of travel , including private cars, motorcycles and walking.

malaysia car travel to singapore

Prior to the pandemic, more than 415,000 people crossed the Woodlands Causeway and Tuas Second Link daily, with short trips making up the bulk of movements.

If you’re planning to join that number, here’s all you need to know about crossing the land border. For those planning to travel by air , refer to the article below instead.

Complete Guide: Singapore – Malaysia quarantine-free air travel from 1 April

Land travel to Malaysia

Fully vaccinated.

All travellers to Malaysia must be fully vaccinated , as defined by the following table:

For example, someone with 2 doses of Pfizer would be considered fully vaccinated if he/she is aged 18-59 years old, but partially vaccinated if he/she is 60 years or older.

Children aged 17 and below are considered to meet the vaccination requirement, regardless of actual vaccination status.

MySejahtera app

malaysia car travel to singapore

Travellers to Malaysia must:

  • download the MySejahtera app ( Android | iOS )
  • create an account (when registering, enter the Malaysia  address you’ll be staying at)
  • complete the digital pre-departure form via the “Traveller” icon on MySejahtera
  • verify their COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

Most of the steps are pretty self-explanatory, except perhaps the last one. Anyone who was vaccinated outside of Malaysia needs to upload and verify their digital vaccination certificate before departure.

malaysia car travel to singapore

This can be done via the MySafeTravel portal , and involves uploading the QR code of your vaccination certificate.

Singapore travellers are only required to upload a single QR code; the instructions say to choose the last EUDCC one on your cert (i.e. Dose 2 for double dosed travellers, Dose 3 for triple dosed travellers). In my case, my “offline QR verification (EU DCC-compatible)” code wasn’t accepted, so in the end I used the one labelled “online QR verification” and it went through just fine.

malaysia car travel to singapore

Take note that every comma, every hyphen must be included! If the name on your vaccination certificate is:

Tan Ah-Kow, John

be sure to enter it exactly that way on MySafeTravel, or verification will fail.

Once approved, it takes about two days for your MySejahtera app to be updated.

malaysia car travel to singapore

Those who were vaccinated in other countries can refer to this guide for the steps required.

Road Charge

Singapore-registered cars must pay a Road Charge of RM20 (~S$6.45) on entry, but this will be waived until 7 April 2022. From 8 April 2022 onwards, the Road Charge is payable.

This concession is meant to give Singaporeans the opportunity to top up their Touch ‘n Go cards, which may have become inactive during the two years the land border was closed.

Vehicle Entry Permit

The much-discussed Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is theoretically required for all non-Malaysian registered vehicles entering Malaysia, but enforcement has been delayed until further notice. The Malaysian government is urging motorists with Singapore-registered vehicles to register ASAP via this portal.

Registered vehicles will receive an RFID tag (cost: RM10 , excluding delivery and service charges), tied to an Touch ‘n Go e-wallet. This allows them to pay Road Charges seamlessly.

VEP registration is valid for five years starting from the day the VEP RFID tag is activated.

How is this different from VTL travel?

If you’ve travelled to Malaysia under the VTL-Land previously, here’s the key differences of the new arrangement.

It’s a much simpler process, now that all modes of transport are valid, the travel insurance requirement has been scrapped, and there’s no more pre-departure or on-arrival testing.

Land travel to Singapore

Travellers are considered fully vaccinated if they meet the following conditions at least 2 weeks before arrival in Singapore:

  • Received the full regimen of WHO EUL Vaccines (see below) and met the minimum dose interval period; or
  • Travellers who contracted COVID-19 before being vaccinated must have received at least one dose of any WHO EUL Vaccines (below) at least 28 days from their first diagnosis  of a COVID-19 infection. Travellers must produce acceptable proof of their first positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Children aged 12 and under in the current calendar year (i.e. those born in 2010 and later, for arrivals in 2022) are treated as fully vaccinated regardless of their actual status.

A booster dose is currently not required to be considered fully vaccinated.

Travellers vaccinated in Malaysia may upload their digital certificate for COVID-19 vaccination on the MySejahtera app during the SG Arrival Card submission (see below).

TraceTogether

malaysia car travel to singapore

All travellers to Singapore must download and register for TraceTogether ( Android | iOS ). This is required for checking into venues and displaying your vaccination status, which is necessary to access shopping malls, restaurants and other vaccinated-only venues.

Travellers who were vaccinated outside Singapore will be granted  temporary vaccinated status lasting about 30 days if they successfully uploaded their digital vaccination certificates as part of their SG Arrival Card (see below) or manually presented their vaccination certificates and the manual immigration counters.

Do note that if you’ve taken 2x Sinovac/Sinopharm doses outside of Singapore, you will still be granted temporary vaccinated status for 30 days, notwithstanding the domestic requirement for vaccination recognition is 3x doses.

SG Arrival Card

All travellers to Singapore (regardless of nationality) must complete an SG Arrival Card within three days before arrival in Singapore.

The SG Arrival Card has been simplified, and now features only three sections:

  • Personal particulars
  • Submission of vaccination proof (not required for those vaccinated in Singapore)
  • Health declaration

Completing the SG Arrival Card is free of charge , if you do it via the official website. Beware of lookalikes out there which charge a fee!

malaysia car travel to singapore

Drivers of foreign-registered vehicles require a valid Autopass card and LTA’s approval email to enter into Singapore, as well as valid road tax and a certificate of insurance for the vehicle.

Applications can be made via the OneMotoring website.

Autopass cards can be collected at LTA’s Johor Bahru Service Centre before entering Singapore, and serve as an electronic VEP to record entry, and pay all tolls. Each Autopass card  is tied to a single vehicle , and costs S$10 (with a pre-loaded value of S$4 and a non-refundable cost of S$6).

VEPs have a validity period of 14 days , starting from the date of entry into Singapore. To extend the stay of the vehicle in Singapore, renewal is required.

Entry Tolls

The following toll fees are charged for entering and exiting Singapore, and apply to both Singapore and overseas registered vehicles.

If you’ve travelled to Singapore under the VTL-Land previously, here’s the key differences of the new arrangement.

Singapore and Malaysia will be reopening their land border from 1 April 2022, with no testing, quarantine or travel insurance required. Travellers may cross the causeway whichever way they wish- even walking!

This should make mattress runs much easier, if nothing else.

Making Cashless Payments in Singapore

There is not enough emphasis on how convenient e-payments are and how much it saves you in terms of time and the hassle of getting cash exchanged in foreign currency.

Especially in Singapore where banking services are extremely easy and safe, and the banks there also partner with oversea banks to provide better services to travellers. In Singapore, there are many options you can pick to make cashless payments as a Malaysian visiting there.

What kind of e-payment options do you have in Singapore?

You can use SGQR, PayNow, credit and debit cards, as well as PayNow Corporate in Singapore. Whether you have a MasterCard, Visa card or UnionPay, they are all accepted here and you can use them to make purchases at supermarkets, pay your bill at restaurants, taxis etc.

Back in October 2019, Malaysia’s PayNet and Singapore’s NETS partnered with each other allowing the residents of both countries to make purchases in each other’s nations. There is no foreign exchange fee and you can easily make your cashless payments.

However, you will be charged a card fee every time you swipe your card in Singapore and that’s something to keep in mind. If you are not keen on paying these extra charges, your best option is to use cash for payments.

Tips : Let your bank know beforehand that you are going to Singapore and hence, many payments will be made. This way, your bank won’t flag your payments and freeze your account, seeing it as a fraud or malicious hacker’s doing. Cash Withdrawal at Singapore ATMs : Of course, having cash in hand, especially in a foreign country is crucial. That’s why while withdrawing cash, try an ATM of Bigger banks in Singapore like United Overseas Bank, DBS Bank and OCBC Bank. This is because these large banks tend to charge very little transaction fees as compared to others.

A complete guide to driving into Malaysia from Singapore

Borders between Singapore and Malaysia have been opened for over a year since the cessation of the COVID-19 outbreak. Many citizens seek to reunite with their loved ones more frequently after not being able to see each other for a long time.

You may be tempted to make a road trip from Singapore to Malaysia at any time. However, if you are driving to Malaysia from Singapore, you need to be aware of the rules and regulations.

In this Pacific Prime CXA article, we will answer frequently asked questions about the Singapore to Malaysia road trip, such as:

  • How to drive to Malaysia from Singapore?
  • How to apply for a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) for a Singapore car to Malaysia?
  • How do you stay safe and secure on your road journey from Singapore to Malaysia?

Driving to Malaysia

Unlike early to mid-2022, there are no entry requirements for Malaysia. As COVID measures lifted, all travelers are welcome to visit Malaysia regardless of vaccination status. You do not need to worry about needing to take additional tests or being quarantined upon arrival at the border.

Travelers may be requested to download and activate the MySejahtera application before or after arrival to Malaysia to indicate their COVID-19 risk status while staying in Malaysia. The COVID-19 risk status in MySejahtera may be checked upon entering the premises.

Essential Documents You Need to Carry with You

You won’t want your planned road trip to be canceled just because you forgot to bring a few sheets of paper. When traveling to Malaysia from Singapore by road, make sure to always carry the following documents with you, as they are mandatory:

Your passport must be valid for more than 6 months in order for you to enter Malaysia. Remember to check whether your passport has been properly stamped both at the entry and exit immigration checkpoints.

Driving License

You need to hold a valid driving license to be able to drive in both Singapore and Malaysia. Your National Driver’s License is accepted in Malaysia without the need to apply for an International Driving Permit. With that, you are then free to drive on Malaysian roads during your stay of less than 90 days.

Motor vehicles registered in Singapore need a VEP. It is mandatory to enter Malaysia via land border crossing. Now, if you are wondering how to secure a VEP for your vehicle, you need to register online via the VEP-JPJ portal and update your personal and vehicle details.

Once you have registered online, you will get the confirmation of successful registration, and then you will have to take the car to one of the following four official centers to get your tag installed:

  • Gelang Patah Southbound RnR (Rest & Relaxation)
  • Plaza Angsana Open Carpark C
  • Lima Kedai Toll Plaza

Before you go to the center, make sure to carry your VEP confirmation slip, VEP-RFID tag appointment, photocopy of your passport and insurance, and registration documents of your car.

Touch ‘n Go (TNG) card

When you are driving to Malaysia from Singapore, you will come across many tolls, and a TNG card can solely take care of all your toll payments. Note that the Ez Link x TNG – a dual currency smart card can be used in both countries for contactless payments at toll gates.

In Malaysia, you can use your TNG cards for:

  • Highway tolls
  • Checkpoint tolls
  • Retail and dining

Where Can You Find and Top-Up Ez Link x TNG Cards?

You can find these cards at selected 7-Eleven stores and petrol stations across Singapore. You could top up the card at one of the stores or via the Touch ‘n Go e-wallet app .

What is Driving Like in Malaysia for a Singaporean?

The roads and road cultures may differ in Malaysia compared to the Lion City. So, it’s better for you to mentally prepare yourself for possible traffic jams, occasional logjams, and long wait times at bottlenecks around the capital of Kuala Lumpur.

One thing to bear in mind is that you are now required to have at least 3/4th of your fuel tank filled before driving to Malaysia. Failing to do so can result in a hefty fine.

With that said, you will still be glad to know that the driving rules mostly overlap in both countries, including no phones while driving, headlights to be on from 7 p.m. – 7 a.m., and more.

How to Stay Safe and Secure on Your Road Trip from Singapore to Malaysia

Here are some safety tips that can come in handy during your road trip:

  • Check your headlights.
  • The tires are in good condition and not worn out.
  • The windshield wipers are functioning properly.
  • The brakes and other internal accessories are working.
  • Remember to lock your car every time you step away.
  • Do not keep any valuables in the car, including passports and electronics.
  • Park your car in validated and secured parking spots overnight.
  • Pick well-lit and often traveled roads, especially during the night.
  • The Emergency Response Service number in Malaysia is 999.

Secure Car Insurance and Health Insurance

Whether driving in your car or renting a car, car insurance will give you peace of mind in case of an unforeseen event along the way, such as vehicle theft, breakdowns, or road accidents.

And in case you fall sick on your road trip and need to consult a doctor, comprehensive travel insurance can take care of your hospital bills in Malaysia, so that you can feel financially safe without the need to pay anything within coverage.

Perak Adventure

Overview: Kuala Lumpur – Ipoh – Kuala Kangsar – Taiping – Kuala Lumpur

Driving Time: 6.5 hours total

Perfect For: People wanting great food and culture in some of the best places in Perak and who have 4-7 nights to spare.

Kuala Lumpur to Perak map

Perak, known as the Land of Grace, is the wonderful west coast state of the Malay Peninsula.  Follow our itinerary for an extreme road trip, Malaysia style!

Depart Kuala Lumpur travelling three hours to Ipoh, the state’s capital, and check-in for a couple of nights.  Once a small village, Ipoh is now one of Malaysia’s largest cities but has retained its gorgeous British colonial architecture.  Best discovered on Old Town’s Heritage Walk, marvel at the pretty buildings, relax at ancient shophouses operating as cafes, and admire the city’s more recent addition of colorful street murals.

In modern times Ipoh was known for its tin-mining industry – the focus of the wonderful Han Chin Pet Soo Museum.  However, the region is most noted for its centuries-old Buddhist cave temples (check out one with Neolithic images dating back 5000 years and others with stunningly large Buddhas), and dramatic limestone cliffs best discovered at Gunung Lang Recreational Park.

Streets of Ipoh

The Lost World of Tambun theme park will keep children busy, with its Tiger Valley, Water Park and Lost World, and families should stay at the onsite hotel to fully appreciate the park’s many rides and attractions.

Get discounted tickets for the Lost world of Tambun here .

Ipoh is perhaps most famous for its food culture, with hundreds of restaurants and hawker food markets mixing Malay, Chinese – Cantonese and Hakka – and Indian flavours.  Hawker stalls, dim-sum restaurants, speciality noodle shops will all tempt you with wafting aromas, and dine on iconic dishes such as nga choi kai, hakka mee, chicken ho fun and wanton mee… washed down with a mug of Ipoh White Coffee.

For those looking for a little pampering we suggest taking a suite (with balcony and lake views!) at The Haven Resort Hotel , Ipoh.  For families or those on a slightly less budget, M Roof Hotel & Residences is ideal.  Set a little outside of the main hustle and bustle of the city centre, the hotel has a variety of apartments and basic hotel rooms, and features a nice rooftop swimming pool.

Next stop is Taiping but en route take a side trip to Kuala Kangsar, the royal town of Perak.  This off-tourist-route town is home to some of the most impressive buildings we’ve seen in Malaysia, including the Ubudiah Mosque, the Royal Museum of Perak, the Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery and Istana Iskandariah, The Royal Palace.  And check out the markets for souvenirs in the form of locally made pottery items.

Reaching Taiping, check-in at your accommodation for another couple of nights, giving yourself time to appreciate this lesser known town.  Similar to Ipoh, Taiping was a centre of the mining industry for decades, with British and Chinese influences still strong today.

malaysia car travel to singapore

The town’s Heritage Trail, 11.5km, covers over 40 attractions including the British colonial clock tower and the National Heritage All Saints Church.  And pencil in at least a half day for the Perak Museum, with national history galleries and zoological specimens. For children, ensure to include a trip to the Taiping Zoo near to the city’s stunning Lake Gardens.  Home to over 1200 animals, the zoo supports endangered species and is active in conservation and research.

In the evening, return to the zoo for a Night Safari Taiping Experience or travel slightly out of town for a lovely fireflies river cruise at the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve.

If you have time, extend your stay and visit the Orang Utan Island at Bukit Merah.  Easily enjoyed as a daytrip from Taiping, Orang Utan Island is a quiet sanctuary that’s home to endangered Orangutans. Spend a morning learning about efforts being made to protect the natural habitat of these wonderful primates.

Get discounted tickets for the Orang Utan Island Day Tour here .

The Novotel Taiping Perak , in the centre of town and minutes from Lake Gardens, is the ideal option for all travellers.  Equipped with a Kid’s Club and swimming pool, the hotel has a bar and international restaurant.

East Coast Malaysia Road Trip

Overview: Kuala Lumpur – Cherating – Kuala Terengganu (ferry to) Redang Island (ferry to) Kuala Terengganu – Kuala Besut (ferry to) Perhentian Islands (ferry to) Kuala Besut – Kota Bharu

Driving Time: 8 hours in total plus ferry times

Perfect For: People who love gorgeous beaches, tropical islands and interesting cities and have at least 9 nights

East Coast Malaysia Road Trip map

Let’s explore East Coast Malaysia!  Departing from Kuala Lumpur, it’s a 3-hour drive across the country on E8 highway to the coastal resort town of Cherating.

A popular beach resort area in Pahang, Cherating is a quiet fishing village opening onto a wide beach.  Indulge in snorkeling, surfing and kitesurfing.

Nearby, the Cherating River is good for kayak adventures or jump on a short cruise to explore the local mangroves.  Keep an eye out for snakes and monkeys along the way and head back in the evening for thousands of fireflies.  Drop by the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary in the north of the village, walkable from most accommodation, to see baby and rescued leatherback turtles.

Dotted with guesthouses and small hotels/chalets, Cherating is also home to Asia’s first Club Med – a 5-star all-inclusive beach resort.  Somewhere a little quieter to stay, the Royale Chulan Cherating Villa is excellent  with 34 beachfront villas and suites.

After a night or two at Cherating, travel north along Highway E8 (2h15m) to Kuala Terengganu.  The royal capital of the Terengganu region, this town was once a simple fishing village until developers discovered oil and rapid development took off!

It is home to one of the best Chinatowns in Malaysia with Kampong-style stilt houses, and the beautiful “Floating Mosque”.  Discover the history of the region at the largest museum in Malaysia, the Muzim Kompleks Negeri Terengganu.  And head to Bukit Puteri for a 200-metre hill climb for great views across the city, the Sungai Terengganu river mouth and the South China Sea.

Club Med Cherating review beach

Feeling hungry?  Head back to Chinatown and try some delicious Peranakan dishes at Madame Bee’s Kitchen or the Town City Food Court.   For your overnight stay, we recommend the Grand Puteri Hotel .  Only five minutes’ walk from Chinatown and with reasonably priced all-air conditioned rooms, it’s ideal for all travelers.

After a good night’s sleep, wake refreshed and ready for your boat trip to exotic Redang Island!  Ferries depart – usually in the morning – from the Shahbandar Jetty, within Kuala Terengganu.  Remember to check the timings directly at the jetty or have your hotel assist as schedules can be volatile.  See here for full details on travelling to Redang Island.

Reaching Pulau Redang – best visited between late March-October – you’ll gasp in awe at the stunning white powder beaches and crystal-clear waters, set to the backdrop of lush tropical rainforest.  This is paradise, Malaysian-style!

Check-in for 3 nights at our recommended hotel – Laguna Redang – located on one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. Spend your time relaxing beachside or poolside, snorkeling or diving with the onsite PADI team, sampling treatments at the D’Manja Forest Spa or trekking in the cool rainforest.

After 3 nights at Laguna Redang it’s hard to pull yourself away but there’s still much to discover.  Catch the return ferry to Kuala Terengganu and travel (1h40m) further north along the coast to Kuala Besut for your small ferry (15-pax speedboats) to the Perhentian Islands.

Expect the boat crossing to be a little wet and to stop at multiple locations dependent on where your fellow travelers are staying… which gives you a great chance to check-out hotels and the islands along the way!  Learn more here .

how to go pulau perhentian from singapore

Check-in for a 3 night stay at either Kecil – the party-backpacker style island and more livelier of the two, especially at Long Beach – or Besar, the more chilled and family-orientated.

Both islands have simple hotels usually opening directly onto the beach, serving Asian and some international cuisine.  Water sports are popular, as is exploring the interior jungle of the islands.

No super-luxury resorts on offer, but arguably in the best position and with a swimming pool – a rarity for Perhentian hotels – is The Perhentian Island Resort .  Located on Besar, it has its own stretch of beach with restricted boat access.

Enjoy slow, peaceful days where time almost seems to stand still until… it’s time to leave!  Jump back on the small ferry/speed boat to Kuala Besut and transfer 1 hour north along the coast to Kota Bharu.

The largest city in Malaysia’s north-east, we suggest a one-night stay at Hotel Perdana , Kota Bharu – 4-star accommodation near museums and markets.  The city offers a handful of tourist attractions, all located within walking distance of each other.  Discover our Things To Do In Kota Bharu guide, whilst you wait for your onwards connection.

A popular transit point with its well-established airport – the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport – and railway connection to the south, Kota Bharu is also near to the Thai border for those looking to extend their tour into Thailand.

Borneo Malaysia Road Trip Itinerary

Looking for a road trip in Malaysian Borneo? Here’s two great choices!

Overview: Kota Kinabalu – Poring Hot Springs – Sandakan – Sungai Kinabatangan – Tawau – Kota Kinabalu

Driving Time: 20 hours in total

Perfect For: Nature lovers who want to see the best Sabah offers on land with two weeks available

Sabah Loop map

On the northeast coast of Borneo is the Malaysian state of Sabah.  Most visitors fly into Kota Kinabalu International Airport and spend a few nights in the city before heading out for epic Borneo nature and wildlife adventures.  We suggest to check-in for four nights as Kota Kinabalu, its surrounding rural jungle, and beautiful coastline offer an awesome array of activities and tours!

Discover the town’s bustling markets selling locally made handicrafts, admire the beautiful City Mosque built on stilts above a lagoon, visit Chinatown, take in spectacular views at Signal Hill Observatory Platform, and don’t miss a ride on the famous Borneo Railway through leafy jungles along the beautiful Sabah coastline.

Outside of the city, you can undertake a fairly easy (relative!) 1N2D climb of 13,000ft Mount Kinabalu, challenge yourself with white-water-rafting at Kiulu River, visit the Klias River for a wetland river cruise searching for proboscis monkeys, or the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park home to tigers, monkeys, gibbons and orang utans!

A full day is needed for island hopping at the spectacular Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, the “jewel in the crown” of Sabah.  Covering five islands just off the coast from Kota Kinabalu, enjoy your day snorkeling and lazing over a bbq beach lunch.

A final favorite of ours is the Monsopiad Cultural Village, 30 minutes outside of the city, which offers a fabulous fun glimpse of life in a traditional Kadazan village.

The city’s accommodation caters for all budgets with many backpacker style options, alongside more luxurious global-brand hotels.  The Magellan Sutera Resort is our top selection, located at the Sutera Harbour. This sprawling resort is set amongst tropical gardens and has beautiful South China Sea views.  If time allows, split your stay with a couple of nights at the 5-star Gaya Island Resort , set on an island within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia : Beautiful Infinity pool

Dragging yourself away from action-packed Kota Kinabalu, drive across Borneo to the northeast coastal town of Sandakan.  This long 330km travel is on well sign-posted but often pot-holed roads.  Passing alongside Mount Kinabalu, you’ll enjoy stunning views across the Kinabalu National Park.

Break up the journey with a few stops, including at the awesome Poring Hot Springs to float in their high sulfur pools, and the Sabah Tea Resort Restaurant is a good spot for lunch.

Reaching Sandakan and Sepilok check-in to your hotel.  There aren’t too many great options in Sandakan with the best options being in nearby Sepilok close to the wildlife experiences. Consider the Sepilok Nature Resort .

For most travelers, Sandakan is synonymous with The Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre , being the main draw for many tourists to Borneo.  Combined with a visit to the adjacent Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre , you’ll spend an interesting day learning about these endangered animals and their disappearing habitat.

Around Sandakan you’ll find many tour companies offering a myriad of wildlife day tours and encounters, such as visiting the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary or Turtle Islands National Park , special Rainforest Discovery Tours and exploration of the Gomantong Caves, home to millions of swiftlets.

Best arranged with the hotel as part of a package tour, depart Sandakan for possibly the highlight of your trip, with two nights at the Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort on the Kinabatangan River.  Stay at simple rainforest accommodation and spend your time enjoying day cruises and night treks in search of primates – such as the endemic proboscis monkey – birds, and other wildlife.

malaysia car travel to singapore

After two amazing nights depart on a very bumpy drive towards Tawau, where we recommend a 3 night stay.  Many tourists will use this time to head into the Danum Valley Conservation Area – approx. 2.5 hours from Tawau town and, unless you have your own 4WD, only accessible as part of a package with the Danum Valley Field Centre.

Stunning secondary forest leads slowly into the warm humidity of the primitive jungle.  Stay overnight at the basic Danum Valley Field Centre chalets and experience epic early morning birding, night jungle drives and ancient rainforest day and night guided treks.  Extremely remote, the Danum rainforest is one of Borneo’s most legendary adventures.

If long travel and muddy treks is not your thing, choose to stay in Tawau – Sabah’s third largest city – and check-in for 3 nights at the Borneo Royale Hotel .

Spend a day visiting the Tawau Hills Park (Taman Bukit Tawau) with several easy, low-altitude jungle treks, a canopy walk and bird-breeding centre.  22km north of Tawau, you’ll enjoy towering flora, a botanical garden, hot springs and swimmable waterfall, alongside the easy- trekking peaks and trails.

Another full day can be enjoyed at the nearer Bukit Gemok Tawau, only 10km from the town.  With untouched forest full of giant trees and some unique elusive creatures, hike for approximately an hour to the Titian Silara canopy walkway.

Back in the town, visit local markets specializing in dried salted fish, anchovies and prawns, or handicraft markets full of handwoven baskets and wooden souvenirs. And drop by the Teck Guan Cocoa Museum factory to watch first-hand cocoa processing into beverages and chocolate.

Return to Kota Kinabalu on direct domestic flight from Tawau Airport.

Capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, Borneo, the fantastic city of Kuching is slowly becoming a top tourist draw.  Charming, compact, with riverside walks, historic buildings and colorful street art, there are many options for easy day trips to the surrounding wilds of Sarawak.

Check-in to your hotel – with our top choice, the Hilton Kuching , centrally located with excellent views of Sarawak River- for 4 nights, giving ample time to discover the city and enjoy our suggested day trips.

One of the most charming cities in southeast Asia, the city’s architectural heritage of White Rajah Brooke-era buildings and 19th-century Chinese shophouses is well preserved.  Though  perhaps the focal point is the winding Sarawak River, flowing through the historic heart of the city.

Stroll along the river walkways and you’ll find historic buildings such as the Square Tower, Chinese History Museum and Sarawak Steamship Building.

Kuching also has some excellent museums and galleries, reflecting on the region’s fascinating history.  The Brooke Gallery at Fort Margherita is a must see, telling the remarkable story of the White Rajahs of Sarawak.  And visit the Sarawak Museum, said to hold one of the best collections in southeast Asia.

Cross Kuching’s famous Darul Hana Bridge for good views, and at night enjoy the Darul Hana musical fountain and light show.  Drop into the Main Bazaar and Carpenter Street at Kuching’s old Chinatown, for temples, Chinese medicine and food stalls.

Semenggoh Wildlife Centre ruby

Now it’s time to head out of town, travelling self-guided or as part of a guided tour for some terrific wildlife experiences!

For the best national park experience in Sarawak – and one of the best places in the area to spot those funny, long-nosed proboscis monkeys – spend a day exploring Bako National Park .  A hot destination for hiking, with a mix of easy and longer trails, and epic jungle rainforest, mangrove swamps and limestone cliffs.

To reach the Park, get an early start and travel approx. 1 hour outside of Kuching to the small pier next to the Bako Market.  A 20 minutes (often wet!) boat crossing takes you to the Park, where you’ll complete a quick registration at the National Park Headquarters and then you’re all set to explore!

Trails from 0.5km to 5.8km, with varying difficulties, spread out through the park with usually a wide range of wildlife easily spotted not too far from the Headquarters.  Keep binoculars at the ready for cheeky monkeys, Bornean bearded pigs, large monitor lizards and many colourful birds.

If you prefer to explore the park by kayak, join an organized tour from Kuching for a peaceful 11km river kayak.

Next up, how about meeting the orangutans at Semenggoh Nature Reserve ?  Probably the most popular day trip from Kuching, whilst there is no guarantee of seeing these semi-wild intelligent primates, there is a fairly good chance outside of the fruiting season (Dec and Jan).  Previously rehabilitated at the centre and returned to the wild, the animals regularly return for twice daily feedings.

Sarawak River, Kuching

Check latest schedules but expect a 9-10am and 3-3.30pm feeding schedule, with the best chance of viewing them at the earlier session, and also be aware of the 1.5km walk from the main building to the feeding area.

Another great day out is a full day at the Santubong Peninsula , only 35km outside of Kuching.  A popular weekend destination for locals, enjoy the beach and swimming in the South China Sea.

Take lunch at the gorgeous Damai Beach Resort and walk over to the Sarawak Cultural Village, an open-air “living” museum featuring a collection of longhouse replicas and traditional instruments.  Aim to catch their twice-daily splendid cultural show.

In the late afternoon make your way to the nearby Kuching Wetlands National Park, with over 6000 hectares of mangrove forest.  A mosaic of small rivers, creeks and streams meander through the Park, and are best explored on a Santubong Wildlife Cruise.  Cameras at the ready in search of Irrawaddy dolphins, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, and as the light fades fireflies come out to play…

This option is the cheapest because you can save more money compared to private taxi. The downside here is that you may need to wait in the queue – hence, you will need to make time allowance for that. Getting off and on the bus along with your luggage is another problem too.

Also, there is scope for many delays at the border when all passengers will be checked for their travel documents. Hence, this is an alternative for those who are a budget-friendly traveller and doesn’t mind the long wait.

Singapore Airlines: British man dies in severe turbulence as flight from London Heathrow forced to land in Bangkok

The plane is believed to have hit an air pocket - with images showing debris in the cabin and passengers saying people not wearing seatbelts hit the ceiling.

A 73-year-old British man has died from a suspected heart attack after "sudden extreme turbulence" on a London-Singapore flight.

Dozens more have been injured after passengers described people being "launched into the ceiling" and overhead lockers.

Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from Heathrow was forced to make an emergency landing in Thailand.

The plane left London on Monday night but diverted to Bangkok, landing at 3.45pm local time on Tuesday.

Singapore Airlines said the pilot declared a medical emergency and landed in Bangkok after "sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin at 37,000 feet about 10 hours after departure".

Passenger Dzafran Azmir, 28, described the chaos on board.

"Suddenly the aircraft starts tilting up and there was shaking so I started bracing for what was happening," he said.

"And very suddenly there was a very dramatic drop so everyone seated and not wearing seatbelts was launched immediately into the ceiling."

"Some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it," he added.

"They hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it."

Briton Andrew Davies told Sky News "anyone who had a seatbelt on isn't injured".

He said the seatbelt sign came on, but there was no time for crew to take their seats.

Mr Davies said "every single cabin crew person I saw was injured in some way or another, maybe with a gash on their head... One had a bad back, and was in obvious pain."

Kittipong Kittikachorn, head of Bangkok airport, told reporters a British man, 73, had died from probable cardiac arrest.

He said it's believed the turbulence hit while people were having breakfast and that an "air pocket" was to blame.

"Seventy-one people needed treatment and six of them had critical injuries," said Bangkok's Smitivej Srinakarin Hospital.

However, Singapore Airlines seemed to contradict those numbers and said only 30 people had been taken to hospital.

In a statement, the UK Foreign Office said it was "in contact with the local authorities".

Forty-seven Britons were among the 211 passengers and 18 crew onboard the plane, a Boeing 777-300ER.

Flight tracking data showed the plane cruising at 37,000ft (11,280m) before dropping 6,000ft (1,830m) in around three minutes.

However, a spokesperson for FlightRadar24 said this appeared to "just be a flight level change in preparation for landing".

Ambulances surrounded the aircraft on the tarmac after landing, with images showing some passengers taken away on stretchers.

Turbulence can hit without warning

Weather producer

There are a few forms of turbulence – where there's a sudden change in airflow and wind speed.

Turbulence can often be associated with storm clouds, which are usually well forecast and monitored, allowing planes to fly around them.

Clear-Air Turbulence (CAT) is much more dangerous as there are no visual signs, such as clouds.

This invisible vertical air movement usually occurs at and above 15,000ft and is mostly linked to the jet stream.

There are clues on where CAT may occur, but generally it can't be detected ahead of time, which means flight crews can be caught unaware with no time to warn passengers and put seat belt signs on.

It's been understood for some time that climate change is increasing turbulence during flights, and the trend is set to worsen according to reports.

"Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased," it said in a statement.

"We deeply apologise for the traumatic experience that our passengers and crew members suffered on this flight."

It said it was working with Thai authorities and "providing all necessary assistance during this difficult time", including sending a special team to Bangkok.

Passport-free travel in Singapore is here — but only for certain travelers

  • From Tuesday, people traveling via car between Singapore and Malaysia can show self-generated QR codes rather than handing over their passports at two checkpoints.
  • Authorities estimate the new procedure will reduce immigration processing time by more than 30%.

Singapore made global headlines last year when the government announced that biometric processing will replace travel document verifications at Changi Airport in the first half of 2024.

But the city-state is going "passport-free" in another area: its land border with Malaysia.

From Tuesday, people traveling by car between Singapore and Malaysia can show self-generated QR codes rather than handing over their passports at two checkpoints.

The new rule , which applies to those traveling via the country's Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, will expedite immigration clearance "without compromising on security," according to Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority.

Who is eligible

Singapore residents and foreign travelers can generate QR codes via the government's MyICA mobile app. Group codes for up to 10 people can be generated for passengers traveling in the same car too.

Like before, travelers are then subject to a face-to-face check by immigration officers.

However, the QR-code clearance is not available to two groups of travelers: those entering Singapore for the first time and those using a different passport from previous visits.

The new procedure is expected to reduce immigration processing time by more than 30% — saving around 20 seconds for cars traveling with four passengers and up to one minute for cars with 10 people, according to authorities.

One of world's busiest border crossings

The checkpoint linking the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru to Woodlands in Singapore is one of the busiest international border crossings in the world.

From March 7 to 10, more than 1.8 million travelers crossed Singapore's two checkpoints that link the island with Malaysia, according to its Immigration & Checkpoints Authority.

On March 8 — the Friday preceding a week-long break for Singapore public schools — a record-breaking 495,000 people crossed the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, exceeding the 485,000 travelers recorded on August 2019, it said.

Singapore plans to roll out the QR code clearance to more travelers crossing checkpoints via other modes of transport at a later date.

Part of a larger push

The QR clearance program is part of a larger push to modernize border control and security procedures in the city-state to manage higher traveler volume amid the crunch of its aging workforce.

Changi Airport's "passport-free" immigration clearance, which is based on biometric verification, is undergoing trials, a representative of Changi Airport Group told CNBC Travel.

A launch date for this program has not been released.

Passport-free travel is underway in Singapore.

Malaysia Airport Privatisation Deal Clouded by Protests Over Gaza War

Reuters

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -A group of prominent Malaysian civil society bodies have started a protest against a bid by a consortium including a firm in the process of being acquired by BlackRock to take the country's airport operator private amid boycott campaigns against some U.S. firms over the Gaza war.

Around 22 organisations have issued a joint statement urging the government to reconsider and block BlackRock's participation in the deal worth about $2.6 billion to take Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) private, alleging the firm has ties with Israel.

A consortium led by Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd and state pension fund the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) announced on May 15 an offer for the shares of MAHB it doesn't already own.

Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) are also part of the consortium.

BlackRock announced in January that it would buy GIP for $12.5 billion, with the acquisition expected to close in the third quarter.

In a letter to EPF management on Thursday, the civil society organisations, including the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations and Viva Palestina Malaysia, urged the pension fund to cease ties with BlackRock.

The privatisation plan has also faced criticism from some opposition and ruling party lawmakers over BlackRock's involvement.

BlackRock, Khazanah, EPF and MAHB did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment on Friday.

The deal is the latest to face protests in Malaysia, a majority-Muslim country in Southeast Asia and a staunch supporter of the Palestinians.

Some Western brands in the country including Starbucks and McDonald, as in some other Muslim nations, have been targeted by boycott campaigns over Israel's military offensive in Gaza.

Malaysian's QSR Brands, the operator of fast food chains KFC and Pizza Hut in Southeast Asia, has indefinitely shelved plans to list on the local stock exchange as its businesses have been affected by the boycott campaigns, Reuters reported in April.

On May 17, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said claims that 25% of MAHB would be owned by a pro-Zionist company are baseless, without naming the company, local media reported.

Anwar's office did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment on Friday.

If the deal is completed, Khazanah and EPF would jointly own 70% of MAHB, while the remaining 30% would be held by GIP and ADIA.

Shares of MAHB have climbed 36% so far this year, giving it a market value of $3.55 billion, LSEG data showed.

BlackRock is the world's largest fund manager. The New York-headquartered firm manages $9.09 trillion in assets globally as of March 2023, according to its website.

Follow our news, recent searches, expect heavy traffic at singapore-malaysia land checkpoints during vesak day, june school holidays, advertisement.

The motorcycle lane on the Johor Causeway will also close intermittently until Jun 5.

This audio is AI-generated.

SINGAPORE: There will likely be very heavy traffic at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints in the coming weeks, as more travellers are expected to cross the Singapore-Malaysia land border during the Vesak Day public holiday and June school holidays.

In addition, heightened security measures are in place in the wake of the attack at a Johor police station that killed two police officers .

The land border crossings between Singapore and Malaysia are among the busiest in the world.

During the recent Good Friday long weekend from Mar 28 to Apr 1, close to 2.3 million travellers crossed Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Monday (May 20).

This was an increase of close to 30 per cent compared with the same Good Friday long weekend period in 2023.

During peak periods, those travelling by car had to wait up to three hours before they were cleared through immigration, due to traffic tailback from Malaysia, said ICA.

"With the stepped-up security measures at the checkpoints due to the heightened threat situation, travellers should expect delays and factor in additional time for immigration clearance," the agency added.

"We seek travellers’ understanding and cooperation to be patient, observe traffic rules, maintain lane discipline and cooperate with ICA officers."

INTERMITTENT MOTORCYCLE LANE CLOSURES

The motorcycle lane on the Johor Causeway will also be closed intermittently until Jun 5 to facilitate works for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link .

This will affect lanes both ways - Singapore and Malaysia-bound.

The Singapore-bound closures will take place from 8pm to 3am, while the Malaysia-bound closures will be from 10pm to 5am.

Riders will be diverted to another lane during the closures.

Road users are advised to follow the traffic signs and the instructions of the traffic controller during the lane closures, said Malaysia's rail operator MRT Corp.

Construction of the 4km RTS Link has seen roughly 65 per cent of structural works on the Singapore side done, while the project has also reached 65 per cent completion on Malaysia's end, as reported in January.

The RTS Link is expected to start passenger service by the end of 2026.

Travelling in and out of Singapore by car? QR code immigration clearance begins Mar 19

Things to take note of.

ICA reminded travellers to ensure that their passports have a remaining validity of at least six months. Singapore permanent residents who have renewed their passports should ensure that their re-entry permits have been transferred to their new passports.

Long-term pass holders should notify ICA or the Ministry of Manpower of any change in their passport particulars before re-entering Singapore.

People travelling by car are encouraged to use QR codes instead of passports for faster immigration clearance, said ICA.

Drivers of foreign vehicles should ensure that their Vehicle Entry Permits (VEP) are still valid as those without a valid Autopass card, a VEP approval email from LTA or valid insurance will be turned back.

ICA added that drivers of foreign vehicles with outstanding fines with government agencies should settle these payments before entering Singapore as those with outstanding fines may be denied entry into Singapore.

Motorists should avoid cutting the queue as it can cause severe congestion and compromise the safety of other drivers.

"Errant motorists caught queue cutting will be turned away and made to re-queue," ICA said.

What is in-flight turbulence, and when does it become dangerous for passengers and crews?

The death of a British man and injuries impacting dozens of others on a Singapore Airlines flight that hit severe turbulence Tuesday is the latest incident to spotlight the potential dangers of flying through unstable air.

NEW YORK (AP) — The death of a British man and injuries impacting dozens of other people aboard a Singapore Airlines flight that hit severe turbulence Tuesday highlighted the potential dangers of flying through unstable air.

The exact cause of the 73-year-old man’s death is under investigation. Authorities said he may have suffered a heart attack, though that hasn’t been confirmed. Based on witness accounts, the number of injuries and the airliner’s sharp descent, experts point to the significant safety hazards that in-flight turbulence poses to airline passengers and crews.

While turbulence-related fatalities are quite rare, injuries have piled up over the years. Some meteorologists and aviation analysts note that reports of turbulence encounters also have been increasing and point to the potential impacts that climate change may have on flying conditions.

Most incidents of planes hitting bumpy air are minor, however, and airlines have made steady improvements to reduce accident rates from turbulence over time. Experts advise air travelers to stay vigilant, stressing the importance of wearing a seat belt whenever possible as a first line of protection.

WHAT IS TURBULENCE?

Turbulence is essentially unstable air that moves in a non-predictable fashion . Most people associate it with heavy storms. But the most dangerous type is clear-air turbulence, which often occurs with no visible warning in the sky ahead.

Clear-air turbulence happens most often in or near the high-altitude rivers of air called jet streams. The culprit is wind shear, which is when two huge air masses close to each other move at different speeds. If the difference in speed is big enough, the atmosphere can’t handle the strain, and it breaks into turbulent patterns like eddies in water.

“When you get strong wind shear near the jet stream, it can cause the air to (overturn). And that creates these chaotic motions in the air,” Thomas Guinn, chair of applied aviation sciences department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, explained.

HOW COMMON ARE TURBULENCE-RELATED INJURIES?

Tracking the total number of turbulence-related injuries around the world is difficult. But some individual countries publish national data.

More than one-third of all airline incidents in the United States from 2009 through 2018 were related to turbulence, and most of them resulted in one or more serious injuries but no damage to the plane, the National Transportation Safety Board reported .

Between 2009 and 2022, 163 people were injured seriously enough during turbulence events to require hospital treatment for at least two days, according to NTSB figures. Most of them were flight attendants, who are particularly at risk since they are more likely to be out of their seats during a flight.

Investigations are underway into what happened during Tuesday’s Singapore Airlines flight. The carrier said the Boeing 777-300ER descended 6,000 feet (around 1,800 meters) in about three minutes after hitting severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean.

Preliminary casualty figures from the airport and a hospital in Bangkok, where the plane headed from London to Singapore landed in stormy weather, indicated that in addition to the one death, six or seven passengers were severely injured. Dozens of other travelers and crew members were reported to have suffered moderate or less serious injuries.

“It’s not uncommon to have turbulence encounters that cause minor injuries up to, say, a broken bone,” said Larry Cornman, a project scientist at the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Atmospheric Research who has long studied turbulence. “But fatalities are very, very rare — especially for large transport aircraft.”

According to Stuart Fox, director of flight and technical operations at the International Air Transport Association, the last clear air turbulence-related death reported from a major carrier took place in 1997. A few fatalities on smaller planes have been reported since, including a death on a private jet last year, Fox said.

Now-standardized safety procedures have significantly helped prevent more cases of serious injuries over the years. Fox noted. They include reviewing weather forecasts, having pilots report when they encounter turbulence and suspending cabin service when planes hit rough air.

CAN PILOTS AVOID TURBULENCE?

Pilots use a variety of methods to avoid turbulence, including using a weather radar display. Sometimes they can simply see and fly around thunderstorms.

But clear-air turbulence “is altogether another animal,” according to Doug Moss, a former airline pilot and safety consultant. It can be devastating, he said, “because the time before the incident can be very calm, and people are caught off-guard.”

Air traffic controllers will warn pilots after another plane runs into clear-air turbulence, Moss said. Many pilots also look at the upper-level jet streams along their route for signs of wind shear, then plan to fly above, below or around those areas, he said.

Modern planes are strong enough to handle just about any turbulence. Cabin areas such as overhead bins may receive cosmetic damage, “but these don’t impact the structural integrity of the planes,” Moss said.

IS CLIMATE CHANGE CAUSING TURBULENCE TO INCREASE?

Some scientists note that reports of turbulence encounters are on the rise. There are a number of possible explanations for that, but several researchers have pointed to potential climate impacts.

Guinn, of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, explains that some predict climate change could alter the jet stream and up the wind shear, which would consequently drive up turbulence in the air.

In a statement Tuesday, Paul Williams, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Reading in England, said there was “strong evidence that turbulence is increasing because of climate change.”

Williams said his research team recently discovered that severe clear-air turbulence in the North Atlantic has increased by 55% since 1979, for example. The team’s latest projections signal that severe turbulence in the jet streams could double or triple in the coming decades if global conditions continue as expected, he said.

Still, others say other factors could also be at play. Cornman notes that there could be a rise in overall air traffic — which may increase turbulence encounters as the number of flight tracks, including those in areas of more turbulence, goes up.

HOW CAN TRAVELERS STAY SAFE?

In short, buckle up. Turbulence can be tricky to predict, but experts stress that the first line of defense in the air is keeping the seat belt fastened, whenever possible.

“Planes are generally built to withstand turbulence,” Guinn said, noting that passengers not wearing their seat belts is a large source of injuries from in-flight turbulence. While no precaution is foolproof, wearing a seat belt greatly increases an individual’s chances of avoiding serious injuries, he said.

“Wear your seat belt,” Guinn said. he stressed. “That’s just a really quick fix to prevent injury.”

Chalida Ekvitthayavechnukul in Bangkok and David Koenig in Dallas contributed reporting.

This story was first published on May 21, 2024. It was updated on May 22, 2024 to make clear that Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University professor Thomas Guinn intended to say that strong wind shear causes air to overturn, not overflow.
