Pangasinan is not only about natural beauty — it also holds significant religious and cultural sites.

Manaoag Church (or Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag) is a revered religious site built in the town of Manaoag. According to local lore, a farmer saw an apparition of the Virgin of the Rosary in the area and since then the church receives thousands of local visitors and pilgrims each year.

In 2011, the Roman Church granted Manaoag Church a unique spiritual affinity to the Basilica of Sant Mary Major, which means that visitors get a full indulgence similar to when visiting a papal basilica in Rome. Locals also refer to Manaoag Church as the “ Catholic Mecca ” of the Philippines.

mapandan pangasinan tourist spot

The municipality was formerly a barrio of Mangaldan.  It was conceived into a municipality in 1909.

Mapandan (meaning plenty of pandan) got its name from “pandan”, a native palm which grew in abundance in the place at that time.  The leaves of the pandan add aroma to the cooked rice if cooked with it.  The leaves are also stripped and woven into mats.

Mapandan is also a Hall of Famer having been Pangasinan’s cleanest, safest and greenest municipality.  It is also the healthiest municipality for having the least number of malnourished children.

mapandan pangasinan tourist spot

3rd Class Municipality

Number of Barangay: 15

Mapandan got its name from the tropical plant abundant in the area called “pandan” which has a fragrant leaf commonly used in Southeast Asia and South Asia for cooking. Mapandan used to be part of the town of Mangaldan until December 28, 1887, when it was established as a pueblo through Direction General No. 39 Administration Civil No. 169-C by Governor General Emilio Bravo.

The idea of Mapandan’s eventual separation from Mangaldan was conceived by 10 local leaders: Antonio Morales, Sabino Prado, Andres Bongato, Ambrosio Calimlim, Valeriano Tamondong, Tomas Aquino, Fulgencio Nato, Filomeno Sarmiento, Jose Lalas, and Florencio Datuin.

Due to the outbreak of an epidemic, Mapandan was for a short time returned to its mother town of Mangaldan until its re-establishment as a town in 1908.

A part of the third congressional district of the province of Pangasinan, Mapandan borders the municipalities of San Jacinto to the north, Mangaldan to the northwest, Manaoag to the east, and the Municipality of Santa Barbara to the South. It has a total land area of 1,994 hectares and a population of 38,058 people according to the latest census.

Mapandan is an agricultural town with 75% or 2,520 hectares of its land area used for rice farming followed by corn and other vegetables.

At the heart of Mapandan is their municipal plaza which is considered to be one of the most beautiful plazas in the province. it is complete with facilities such as an open-air auditorium, tennis courts, a children’s playground, and a well-maintained landscaping that visitors can enjoy.

As a way of thanksgiving for the bountiful product of the town and in commemoration of its history, Pandan Festival was launched and has become a regular festivity of the town. Held every 2nd week of April, the festival is not just a celebration of the town’s bounties as it highlights the people’s industry, diligence, and commemoration of its colorful history.

PANDAN FESTIVAL

Pangasinan Pandan Festival

Mapandan was formerly a barrio of Mangaldan. It was before located in the hilly regions of the south where there used to be plenty of “pandan” a native palm whose leaves will add aroma to cooked rice. The leaves also are stripped and woven into mats. That’s why they call it Mapandan.

The Pandan Festival showcased the town’s agricultural wealth, a celebration of its people’s industry and diligence as well as a commemoration of the town history. Read More:   asensopangasinan.com

Pangasinan Pandan Festival

The municipality was formerly a barrio of Mangaldan. It was conceived into a municipality in 1909.

Mapandan (meaning plenty of pandan) got its name from “pandan”, a native palm which grew in abundance in the place at that time. The leaves of the pandan add aroma to the cooked rice if cooked with it. The leaves are also stripped and woven into mats.

Mapandan is also a Hall of Famer having been Pangasinan’s cleanest, safest and greenest municipality. It is also the healthiest municipality for having the least number of malnourished children.  Read More:  http://pangasinan.gov.ph/the-province/cities-and-municipalities/mapandan/

Pandan Festival Showcases Local Cuisine and Culture in Mapandan, Pangasinan

The local government of Mapandan, Pangasinan aims to enhance tourism in the area through a variety of activities for the upcoming Pandan Festival. The festival, which runs from March 18 to 25, is expected to attract more tourists this year as restrictions on crowd gatherings ease.

Mayor Karl Christian Vega shared that the festival highlights include the Pandan Cookfest, featuring various dishes that incorporate pandan leaves, and the Grand Street Dancing Competition among barangays. The opening of a Negosyo Center and Pasalubong Center will also take place alongside the festival’s launch, offering visitors and residents a chance to purchase various pandan products and other town items.

Pandan, historically abundant in the area, remains in high demand. Thus, the local government encourages more farmers to grow pandan and provides seedlings to the 15 barangays to plant in their community gardens, along with vegetables. The town also promotes sports activities such as the Biskeg-Peles Mapandan Triathlon and cycling, as well as water sports, with the recent grant of a slope protection project to improve the river system.

The festival also includes the Mutya ng Mapandan beauty pageant, the Alumni Night, the Balikbayan Night, and the Zarzuela to honor the native town of overseas Filipino workers.
