My birthday party on the Blackbird
I contacted Captain Warwick by email. His response was quick, informative and very inviting. I chartered the Blackbird for 20 people on a Saturday afternoon. I think it was the maximum number I could imagine, although the Captain says it holds 30. People were able to move about, even with a two meter table down the middle. The price was very reasonable. They had big bins for rubbish. I catered for the party. Hot chicken, dips, etc, and birthday cake champagne and soft drink. We left from the ferry terminal in Footscray and went upriver. Captain Peter's commentary was really informative. The cruise took 2 hours. I had fantastic feedback from my friends. The map provided by the Captain was spot on. The ferry terminal is close to buses and trains. The Maribyrnong river cruise passes some very historic sights. Thanks so much to Peter and Warwick, I had a fantastic birthday party that went without a hitch.
Loved the casualness and the views from he boat with good commentary. When disembarking the park is wonderful and the building are so interesting and informative
Was looking for an inexpensive new experience for 4 grandchildren during school vacation and they loved it! I have spent most of my life in the Footscray area yet learnt so much about the history of life on and around the River. We took our lunch with us and simply relaxed for a couple of hours. The youngest [5] while not interested in the history was delighted at the wild life and the river view of places he knew. [younger kids may need some entertainment] but the 7 & 9 yo's enjoyed following the map.
Peter & Warrick hosted an educational and entertaining two hour river cruise along Maribynong River from Footscray - Avondale Heights & return on the unique Blackbird - our experience was 10/10
We recently took the cruise with a group of friends on a wet and windy Sunday. As we were a large group the booking had been made in advance so we persevered with the weather. The boat is old but that doesn't matter, The captain and his support are very friendly and very knowledgable of the area. We cruised up the river towards Essendon sailing past Flemington racetrack on the way. Under bridges and many historic sights with the captain providing a running commentary on the interesting times in and around the river. On the way back down the river the boat was stopped sideways in the middle of the river so we could all take some photographs of the Melbourne skyline which was lit up with the sun streaming through the clouds. I would thoroughly recommend this cruise even if the weather is not perfect. The boat is covered and if you wish you can stand on the rear deck during the cruise to get an even better view.
Delightfully unhurried, uncomplicated, quiet, knowledgeable owner and son. Could be on the River Queen with Humphrey Bogart at the helm. It was business but mixed in friends and their kids as well. They go anywhere it is safe and if you want to know ask them to tell you all about where you are. Parking is easy depending on time and day of week. If you wanted polished chrome and huge load V8 engines don't book here!
