Ford launched the all-new Maverick small pickup just a couple of years ago. With its affordable price point, base hybrid powertrain and versatility, it was an easy pick to make our GP100 list upon its release. The immediate thought for many, however, was how to convert the Maverick into a camper. And that’s way easier thanks to Go Fast Campers .

The Maverick isn’t ideal for generic, one-size-fits-all truck add-ons. It has a 4.5-foot bed, shorter than a typical body-on-frame truck bed. However, as The Drive first spotted , Go Fast Campers are offering a version of the brand’s pop-top Platform Camper that is custom-tailored for the Maverick.

The Maverick Camper is a precise fit for the 4.5-foot bed. It offers a low profile, adding just 6.5 inches to the vehicle height and only 255 pounds, well below the Maverick’s 1,500-pound-plus payload. Go Fast Campers says the combination “does not appear to impair fuel economy.” During our initial testing, the Maverick hybrid still averaged a fuel economy of 37 mpg while hauling a full pallet of mulch in the bed.

The Maverick Camper offers a 50 x 90-inch sleeping area. Gas struts provide easy setup and hold the pop-top in place during bad weather. The floor also offers reconfigurable panels that can reform the cabin into a bunk bed and provide room for a standing desk (or baby changing station).

roof top tent by front runner

Go Fast Campers says the Maverick Camper only costs $7,700, making it the market’s most affordable new vehicle-to-camp option. Theoretically, you can pair the Maverick Camper with a base XL hybrid Maverick and still come out under $30,000. But even if you switch to the straight gas powertrain to get AWD and level up with the Fx4 package, you will still come out below the base price for most mid-size trucks and off-roaders (and already have a slick pop-top camper).

It has been hard to find a Maverick since the launch with production issues and heavy demand. But Ford is doing its best to keep up with demand, including opening up 2024 model-year orders back in July of this year .

Alternatives

Go Fast Campers obviously is a great option for your Ford Maverick pickup, but it’s hardly the only option (as you can see in our guide to the best rooftop tents). Here are a few alternatives you can buy right now that are all great whether you drive a Maverick or not.

Ford Maverick-Ready Camper Weighs Just 634 Pounds and Sleeps Two

By James Gilboy

Posted on May 18, 2023 6:00 PM EDT

Not everyone wants (or can afford) a gargantuan camper like an Earthroamer . If the point of camping is to get away from the everyday, to simplify, then the smallest solution is likely the one that’ll work best. And it’s hard to get much smaller than the Scout Tuktut , a minuscule 634-pound camper that’s perfect for pickup trucks like the Ford Maverick .

Designed to fit midsize or smaller pickups, the Tuktut achieves its minimal weight using a combination of an aluminum exoskeleton and composite paneling. It’s around half the weight of some similarly sized campers, making it more suited to use on the lightest-duty trucks like the Ford Maverick. It won’t eat up much of the Maverick hybrid’s 1,500-pound payload capacity, leaving room for passengers or gear—and it might not even ruin its fuel economy either.

Scout Tuktut camper on a Ford Maverick

While the camper can wedge safely into the Maverick’s 54-inch bed, it’s less clear if it fits the smaller 48-inch bed of the Hyundai Santa Cruz . However, it may also work on the back of an imported kei truck , many of which have six-foot beds and payload ratings of around 770 pounds. This camper would probably push a kei truck to its limit, reducing its top speed and gas mileage, though it’d make for one of the cheapest campers you could get on the U.S. market.

Despite the Tuktut’s weight, it’s neither too tight inside nor lacking utility. Its ceiling is 74.5 inches (or six-foot-two), while its 69-inch sleeper berth can be optioned with bed extensions to more than comfortably fit two. Other options include Goose Gear modular storage, or bed runners to assist in unloading after getting home.

Scout Tuktut camper cutaway

The Scout Tuktut isn’t out yet, but the company says it’ll be available starting Q3 at a starting price of $16,500. A quick look at competing campers that fit midsize trucks shows that to be a competitive price and at half the weight of similar campers. Bed-mounted tents are still a far more affordable option, but they don’t offer the security a camper does—and that counts if you’re in bear country .

Can the 2022 Ford Maverick Tow a Camper Trailer?

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on November 13, 2021

It’s a new small truck for a new generation of drivers, but can the Ford Maverick tow an RV trailer?

Many trucks can handle RV trailers, but certainly not all.

Let’s find out if this much-anticipated addition to the Ford family has the power to take us camping.

maverick travel trailer

What Is the Ford Maverick?

The Maverick is Ford’s new small pickup truck. Some folks may remember a compact car with the same name in the 1970s, but this is a different animal entirely.

The recently unveiled 2022 Ford Maverick has a hybrid powertrain and a starting price of $19,995. It has a short bed that’s only 4.5 feet, but it’s long on legroom. It can comfortably seat three backseat passengers. It’s tempting to think of the Maverick as a downsized Ranger or F-150.

In some ways, however, it’s more like a cargo-carrying Ford Escape.

The low-profile, unibody truck comes in three different trims, the XL, the XLT, and the Lariat. The standard trucks are FWD with a 2.5L, four-cylinder engine combined with a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

You can upgrade to a turbocharged 2.0L engine that provides 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The Maverick boasts up to 40 mpg in the city and 500 miles on a tank of gas.

What Is the Ford Maverick’s Towing Capacity?

The standard Ford Maverick tow capacity is 2,000 pounds. However, the amount doubles to 4,000 pounds with AWD models equipped with the turbo engine and a towing package.

The package also includes an improved engine cooling system, trailer brake controller, hitch receiver, and a seven-pin wiring harness.

maverick travel trailer

Can the 2022 Ford Maverick Pull a Camper Trailer?

The Maverick is capable of towing some RV trailers. They’re going to be on the smaller and lighter side, however, and you’re going to need that optional tow package.

Be mindful of the fact that, for safety’s sake, you’ll want to steer clear of the maximum towing capacity. Most RVers try not to exceed 80% of their vehicle’s total towing capacity.

That means the Maverick’s limit actually maxes out at 3,200 pounds.

What Kind of RV Can It Tow?

That lower and more realistic limit is going to reduce the number of camper options you have. Thankfully, there’s a trend in the RV industry toward smaller and more lightweight camper trailers right now.

We can easily see a new Ford Maverick pulling a nicely appointed teardrop trailer or maybe a small travel trailer.

Another option for Maverick owners is the time-tested pop-up camper. They weigh less than other RV trailers because they have collapsible sides made from canvas or a similar material. Unfortunately, they don’t have as many amenities as larger trailers, and storage is severely lacking, too.

Pro Tip: Before you go, know how much you can tow! This is how to How to Find Towing Capaci ty for Your Truck Or SUV .

maverick travel trailer

Can the Ford Maverick Pull a Fifth Wheel?

Unfortunately, the Ford Maverick can’t tow a fifth wheel. They’re much bigger and bulkier, with a dry weight that averages around 12,500 pounds.

You’ll need a much more powerful truck than a Maverick to safely move a fifth wheel safely.

Can the Maverick Carry a Truck Camper?

At first glance, it seems that the 4.5-foot truck bed might be a bit small to accommodate a truck camper. However, with the tailgate down, the bed expands to six feet.

In that case, your challenge becomes finding a truck camper that comes in under the Maverick’s payload capacity of 1,500 pounds.

This could be tough to achieve, especially considering you need to factor in the weight of your other cargo, including the driver and passengers.

maverick travel trailer

Will the New Ford Maverick Make a Good Tow Vehicle?

The Maverick has some cool innovations, and we love its price tag. It’s roomy, offers a smooth, comfortable ride, and can carry lots of cargo and passengers. It gets great gas mileage, too. In short, the Ford Maverick is a good tow vehicle as long as a small trailer suits your style.

Can You Use a Truck Bed Tent with the Maverick?

If you want to go even more minimal, a tent camper is another option. Tent camps are tents that secure inside the truck bed. They shelter you from the elements and let you sleep on a flat, level surface that’s off the ground.

On the positive side, they’re extremely economical and allow you to get into more remote places.

They have their disadvantages, too. There’s no bathroom or kitchen, and you have to take them down before you drive off from the campsite.

Pro Tip: No RV? No problem! This is How To Truck Bed Camp.

maverick travel trailer

Ford Maverick Not a Heavy Hitter

The new Ford Maverick has a lot going for it, but let’s face it: it’s no workhorse. The Ford Maverick’s tow ratings are impressive for a small truck but not enough to make it an ideal tow vehicle.

Whether the Maverick makes up for its shortcomings in other areas depends on your specific needs and lifestyle.

Unfortunately, with the frontal area limits, I might have to look into pop-up campers instead. I don't care for the extra work of them or the tent-style sides, but at least the modern ones have bathrooms.

Note that 1685 lbs doesn't include filled water tank or propane tanks. It may not even include interior fittings such as fridge, counter, cabinets, etc. RV manufacturers love to minimize the real world weight of their lightweight trailers.

All great things to know. I'm realtively new to this so I value all of your thoughts and recommendations. As for the propane tanks/water tanks, do you have to drive with them full? Or can you drive with them empty and fill up at the camp site? I really don't know the answer to that.

most of the weight call outs on travel trailers will be dry weight, trailer weight only.

So how in the heck would you know what the ACTUAL weight of any trailer is before you buy it? Is there like fine print saying actual weight?

you have to estimate. usually a good guideline is 800lbs to 1k lbs of "wet" gear weight allowance.

Thanks Newbernwolf & Elephantrider. Lots to think about.

^ this guy gets it.

I've read your trailer's GVWR should not be more than 75% of your vehicle's tow rating. Not sure if this is to allow for all the stuff you load into the trailer or what, but probably so. Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk

So do we know what the GCWR is for the Maverick yet? How does that play into effect? Say for instance my wife, my child and myself weigh 500 lbs just to keep the math simple. Does this subtract from our towing amount? I.e. instead of 2,000 lbs we can now do 1,500 lbs?

GCWR and max tow weight are two different weights. Your trailer tongue weight would go into your GCWR A good rule of thumb is to not tow more than 80% of your max tow capacity. Therefore look at total weight around 3200. If you have to go to 3500# Teardrops, squaredrop and pop up trailers are ideal for the Maverick IMO. if you can do without a bathroom in RV it is a real plus. Use the campground showers/toilets and carry an enclosed toilet with privacy tent

So, it's a bit tricky without knowing exactly which Maverick you're wanting or how much cargo you anticipate hauling, but I'll give it a try. I'll assume 150 lbs of cargo and go with the 500 lbs of family. For the Hybrid FWD, you have a GCWR of 6,010 lbs and a curb weight of 3,674. (Curb weights are found on the first link of technical specs on page 4) 6,010 - 3,674 - 2,336 - 500 - 150 = 1,686. You can pull up to 1,686 lbs with your family and 150 lbs of cargo in the truck. For the Ecoboost FWD without the tow package, you have a GCWR of 5,900 lbs and a curb weight of 3,563 lbs. 5,900 - 3,563 - 500 - 150 = 1,687. You can pull up to 1,687 lbs with your family and 150 lbs of cargo in the truck. For the Ecoboost AWD without the tow package, you have a GCWR of 6,145 and a curb weight of 3,731 lbs. 6,145 - 3,731 - 500 - 150 = 1,764. You can pull up to 1,764 lbs with your family and 150 lbs of cargo in the truck. For the Ecoboost FWD with the tow package, you have a GCWR of 7,900 and a curb weight of 3,563 lbs. 7,900 - 3,563 - 500 - 150 = 1,764. You can pull up to 3,687 lbs with your family and 150 lbs of cargo in the truck. For the Ecoboost AWD with the tow package, you have a GCWR of 8,145 and a curb weight of 3,731 lbs. 8,145 - 3,731 - 500 - 150 = 3,764. You can pull up to 3,764 lbs with your family and 150 lbs of cargo in the truck. I hope this helps.

Another thing I should point out is the frontal area. It's about halfway down on the left side of the Towing Guide. Without the trailer tow package, the Maverick has a maximum frontal area of 20 sqft. With the tow package, it has a maximum frontal area of 40 sqft. What this means is that you should limit the height and width of your trailer, because if you don't the front of it will create too much drag and wind resistance and strain the truck. So if your trailer is 6 feet wide and 6 feet tall, it has a frontal area of 36 sqft. If your trailer is 6 feet wide and 8 feet tall, it has a frontal area of 48 sqft, which is too much. This doesn't take aerodynamics into account, so a well designed trailer, such as a teardrop trailer or a boat would be less problematic than a square trailer of the same dimensions. But that pretty much limits you to a pop-up trailer unless you get the 4k tow package. Even then, it has to have a fairly small profile.

I would definitely be really conservative with size and weight. You might find a tiny Rpod or something similar, but this truck isn't really designed to tow anything substantial, in spite of the videos. BUT you can buy something really small for the grownups, and put everybody else in a tent. 😃

Honestly, I just want a teardrop trailer with a kitchen on the outside and a full bathroom on the inside. I'm fine with tent camping, but my wife won't go if we have to dig a hole.

How do truck campers work? Like those ones that fit in the bed of the truck? Do those have a frontal area coverage that needs to be dealt with?

Only the part that sticks up above the cab is measured as frontal area. Since there's no Gap between the cab and the part that sits in the cab, there's no wind resistance on most of it.

Honestly, I hadn't even considered those. We'll have to wait and see if they make any for the short bed of a Maverick.

Mind if I toss a question in here, about the frontal area specs? In the towing guide, there's a footnote on the 20 sq ft frontal area line, that says "Base vehicle frontal area". Does that mean that the Maverick's frontal area is 20 square feet, and the trailer can't add anything additional (i.e. can't stick up above the cab or be wider than the truck)? If not, what does that footnote mean?

The frontal area of the trailer cannot exceed 20 foot.

Hey! That's great news that you found a brand that offers travel trailers within your weight limit. It's always good to do your research and find a reputable brand. Out of Canada sounds interesting, I'd love to know more about the brand. As for traveling, it's always a good idea to be cautious, but it's good to know that crime rates are low in certain areas, like in New Zealand. Happy travels!
