Cruise control

  • Add to quote

What is Cruise Control with brake function? Is this automatic distance controlled cruise control, where the car applies the brakes when you approach a car in front? Or is is BMW speak for standard cruise control? On my recent test I was approaching a car in front and the car would have driven into the back of the car in front had I not braked. With the green button adjacent to the hazard light switch I thought this was the control for the warning on getting close to the car in front.

mini jcw adaptive cruise control

When you enable the cruise control it is an adaptive cruise control in fact. It will read the distance to the car in front via the camera and it will adapt its speed by breaking/accelerating alone. When/if the traffic comes to a stop, the car will slow down by itself till a complete stop and it will start by its own when the traffic moves. If the car is standing still more than a few seconds the automatic brake will kick in and the car will only move if you will accelerate. The adaptive cruise control can be turned off and only a regular CC can be enabled, via settings.

Thanks ro_explorer. I am looking at the brochure specs for 2019MY, the Classic model does not appear to have cruise fitted, whilst the Sport & the Exclusive have “cruise control with brake function” to fit cruise as an option to the Classic requires the “Driving assistant pack” which includes “Active Cruise Control” so I’m a touch confused is the standard cruise on the Sport & exclusive is actually Active cruise or not. The car I had on test a 2018 car had cruise but would have rammed the back of a car in front had I not intervened! I suspect that “Cruise control with brake function” is not active or adaptive, but what is the “brake function”?

Cruise with brake will slow you down going down a hill to keep to the set speed . Without it the car could go over the set speed . Adaptive cruise will adjust the speed to keep the distance from the car in front . Hope this helps.

"From 18 mph upwards, the cruise control with brake function automatically regulates the desired speed and maintains it even when driving downhill, applying the brakes when required. This function is operated via the multifunction steering wheel, and makes driving a MINI an even safer and more relaxing experience." Active cruise control is the following - "As well as maintaining a set speed, the camera-based active cruise control system regulates the distance from the vehicle in front on busy roads and motorways. The system operates between 18 - 87 mph." Hope this helps.

I have a 2022 F60 with the driver assistance package but not the adaptive cruise control with stop and go. What what I need is to find out if my Mini could be retrofitted have the ACC.

2018 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop review: Small and sporty, but a bit too sharp

Mini’s most powerful hardtop is a fun little pocket rocket, as long as you don’t mind the rough ride.

mini jcw adaptive cruise control

While the standard Cooper and hotter Cooper S are great fun in their own rights, the most raucous Minis wear John Cooper Works badges. You can get the go-fast JCW treatment on everything from the standard Hardtop to Mini's Convertible , Clubman and even supersized Countryman . It's the ultimate way to experience Mini motoring. But be warned: All that extra power comes with a lot more concessions in everyday drivability.

mini jcw adaptive cruise control

2018 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop

The bottom line.

The John Cooper Works has more than a few perks over its Cooper and Cooper S siblings, starting with a healthy power increase. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine puts out 228 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque in this JCW Hardtop, increases of 39 and 29, respectively, over the Cooper S. To keep that extra grunt in check, larger Brembo brakes handle stopping duty, a stiffer suspension offers improved poise and a larger rear spoiler improves aerodynamics.

The first thing I notice as I slip behind the wheel is a two-inch metal cylinder sitting in the cup holder. Turns out it's a Bluetooth-enabled remote for the optional Pro Valve Exhaust. Two clicks of the button opens a valve, allowing exhaust to bypass the muffler for a much louder sound. At speed, it sounds like there's a motorcycle trailing you -- it's awesome.

Flip the JCW Hardtop into Sport mode, and you get more weight to the steering, as well as improved throttle response and revised shift mapping from the six-speed automatic transmission (yes, you can get a manual, and you should). On the twisty roads of Northern California, it immediately becomes clear that this is not a car for softies. The suspension is stiff, and when paired with the no-cost-optional Pirelli P7 Cinturato run-flat, all-season tires, the overall ride quality is seriously harsh. The JCW crashes and jounces over even the smallest road imperfections, the hard sidewalls totally unforgiving. If I bought this car, I'd stick with the summer tires.

2018 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop

Small, sure, but most definitely mighty.

That said, on smooth roads, the JCW Hardtop reminds me how fun front-wheel-drive cars can be. The steering is crisp and accurate, with that typical Mini go-kart-like feeling. Torque comes on strong from just 1,250 rpm and remains plentiful up to 4,800 rpm, meaning there's plenty of juice in the majority of the rev range. On my favorite back roads, I can largely leave the car in third gear and know there's always plenty of power to rocket me out of a turn. Straight-line performance isn't too shabby, either, with Mini estimating a 5.9-second 0-60 time, which is the same as a Volkswagen GTI, and quicker than a Honda Civic Si.

As for driving aids? There aren't any. Blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist are absent. Adaptive cruise control is an option, but my tester doesn't have it. Boo.

Cute, useful tech

Mini's infotainment system is basically a cuter version of BMW's iDrive. You can control it with the rotary knob on the center console, or simply by touching the screen. Housed in an 8.8-inch screen inside a gimmicky color-changing ring on the dash, the Mini Connected system is as intuitive as any iteration of BMW iDrive, and while it features Apple CarPlay compatibility, Android Auto is unavailable.

The onboard navigation is easy to use and has no trouble with voice commands, even when asking it to send me to the hard-to-pronounce Cahuenga Boulevard (that's "ca-wang-ah") in Los Angeles. As a bonus, there's a quick search field for when you just need to find the closest pizza joint or grocery store.

Fun cabin, and not too small

If the Mini's ultra-cute exterior doesn't make you say "Awww," then perhaps the interior will. Everything is round and colorful, with cute little graphics everywhere (like the checkered flag pattern of the redline indicator). Climate control functions are operated by traditional dials and buttons on the center stack, but things like the engine on-off switch, parking sensors, stop-start, traction control and driving modes are all controlled by toggle switches. If you're looking for the window switch toggles, they're back on the doors, where they belong.

2018 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop

Flip the switch and make it go!

The Mini is a small car, but at five feet, nine inches, I have no problem with headroom, even with the optional panoramic sunroof. Sure, my six-foot-five video producer has to duck his head a bit, but he has no complaints about front-seat legroom. There is, in theory, room for two adults in the back. But let's be honest, you aren't going to put real people back there. Instead, fold those seats down, and you'll find 34 cubic feet of space, which is a big improvement over the 8.7 cubic feet that's available with the seats upright.

How I'd spec it

First, spend some extra coin on the Signature or Iconic trims to get the Dynamic Damper Control. No need for that harsh ride when you're just commuting, plus that's the only way to get driver's aids like forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. The good news is that even at the lowest Classic trim, there are so many ways to customize your Mini. Stripes, mirror caps, illuminated piano black interior details and more are all available. It can get pricey, sure, but at least you'll be unique.

The 2018 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop starts at $31,800, but with the optional automatic transmission, navigation system, premium audio and panoramic sunroof, my test car comes out to a lofty $39,850. Yeah, that's a lot.

Great car, bad value

There are lots of small, sporty cars out there, but nothing quite like the John Cooper Works Hardtop. The closest competitor, in my eyes, is the less-expensive, slightly less-powerful Volkswagen GTI . Of course, for the price of my test car, you could have a 292-horsepower Golf R with all-wheel drive.

2018 Mini Cooper JCW Hardtop: Mighty, tiny and full of sass

mini jcw adaptive cruise control

Other alternatives include the Honda Civic Si , which offers less power but a much lower price. The Mazda MX-5 Miata , Subaru BRZ  or  Toyota 86  are other good options if you want naturally aspirated grunt and rear-wheel drive. You could even get into something like a Fiat 500 Abarth , which sounds killer, but is super cramped inside and significantly down on power.

In hardcore John Cooper Works form, the Mini Hardtop is a blast -- darting through traffic and zipping around town to run errands is tons of fun in this little guy. But its harsh ride quality and expensive price point makes it a tough sell alongside traditional hot hatch competitors. It's a zippy little pocket rocket with a character all its own, but it comes at a pretty high price.

Emme's Comparable Picks

  • 2018 Volkswagen Golf R: VW's hottest hatch
  • 2017 Honda Civic Si: Can turbo power reinvigorate this sport compact?
  • 2017 Fiat 500C Abarth: The most fun you can have for less than $22,000

The New Technology & Features of the 2022 MINI Refresh

mini jcw adaptive cruise control

The 2022 MINI refresh isn’t just about design. There are actually a fair amount of new technology and features that will be rolled out in conjunction with the revised line-up. And when we say line-up we mean the entire line-up. Yes some of this new tech will also debut on the Clubman and Countryman starting with March production. So what’s new beyond the look? Lets dive into the details.

Heated Steering Wheel

After years of fielding requests, MINI is finally offering a headed steering wheel. For cold weather markets (especially on the Convertible) this has been a highly anticipated option that had been rumored for years. But it’s not just on the refreshed models. Starting with March 2021 production MINI will offer a single stage heated steering wheel across its entire range . The system is operated via a small switch on the left side of the steering column.

mini jcw adaptive cruise control

Lane departure warning

For the 2022 MINI refresh, the brand will offer a Driver Assistance Package, available as an optional extra for the MINI 3-door, the MINI 5-door and the MINI Convertible. The key new feature for MINI here is lane departure warning. This new technology helps the driver stay safely in their lanes between 70 KPH and 210 KPH. To prevent unintentional lane departure, the system registers markings at the edge of the lane and alerts the driver if there is a risk of deviation by vibrating the steering wheel. Unlike some BMW systems this version of Lake Departure Warning will not steer for you or tug at the wheel to correct.

2022 MINI refresh

New Active Cruise Control – featuring Stop & Go

This upgraded option is available for the first time for the MINI 3-door, the MINI 5-door and the MINI Convertible starting with March production.

The new Active Cruise Control (which is included in the Driver Assistance Package Plus) now also offers a Stop & Go function in conjunction with an automatic transmission. It automatically maintains the desired speed and the distance to vehicles ahead in four stages. The system uses data registered by the front camera installed in the upper part of the windscreen frame to adjust speed and distance according to the situation. The combined speed and distance control can be used in the range between 30 and 140 km/h. If necessary, the system can brake the vehicle to a standstill. To start up again from a standstill, you only need to briefly depress the accelerator pedal. This feature will eventually find its way to the F54 Clubman and F60 Countryman.

mini jcw adaptive cruise control

Frequency Selective Damping

There’s really only one mechanical change and it has nothing to do with the engine, transmission or even battery in the Cooper SE. All small MINIs now features frequency-selective damping as part of the optional adaptive chassis.

It achieves an optimized balance between sportiness and ride comfort through the use of continuous frequency-selective damping. An additional valve acting on the traction side takes over the task of smoothing out sudden pressure peaks within the damper. Making this possible is the speed of the adjustment – within 50 to 100 milliseconds.

Depending on the driving situation and road conditions, the damping forces can be reduced by up to 50 percent. This is intended to significantly increase ride comfort and handling composure over rough roads. The result should be that sport mode should be less punishing on rough roads while still delivering the aggressive feel of the current system. The new damper technology is available for all model variants except the MINI One First, the MINI One and the MINI Cooper SE.

The New Driver Assistance Package(s)

The Driver Assistance Package includes Park Distance Control with sensors at the rear and the rear-view camera, as well as cruise control with braking function and Driving Assistant including the new lane departure warning. With the Driver Assistance Package Plus, these functions are supplemented by the Parking Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.

2022 MINI refresh

Electronic Parking Brake

In the US market, all MINIs with automatic transmissions will get an electric parking brake as standard. It is activated and released with a button on the centre console as we’ve seen in the Clubman and Countryman previously. The best news to us is that models with a manual transmission retain the standard parking brake so e-brake turns are still on the menu for those that want them.

2022 MINI refresh

New MINI operating system with additional connectivity features.

The operating system of the MINI 3-door, MINI 5-door and MINI Convertible has been updated with a new visual design and interface. That new interface includes widgets which allow for quicker control of the audio system, hands-free telephone system, navigation and apps. The screen display with symbols and white text on new colour backgrounds has a very different look that in our eyes feels more modern and inline with the type of design we see in apps and newer digital experiences.

The desired menu items are displayed as “live widgets“ and can be opened by swiping the touchscreen, whereupon they are shown in enlarged form in the centre of the display. .

Advanced connectivity features, audio and navigation features are combined in three further equipment packages that build on each other. The multifunctional instrument display, MINI Connected, ConnectedDrive and Remote Services are all components of the Connected Media package. The Connected Navigation Package adds the MINI navigation system including Real Time Traffic Information and Apple CarPlay preparation. The Connected Navigation Plus package also adds MINI Connected XL, Concierge Services, MINI Head-Up Display and telephony with wireless charging. Note some of the details of these packages might change based on specific markets.

mini jcw adaptive cruise control

The new MINI App

The new MINI App offers an advanced user experience that is designed to be more intuitive while offering more functionality. It allows drivers to contact their MINI at any time, for example to see information on the car‘s status or to prepare for a trip. The MINI App, which can currently be downloaded free of charge from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store in 30 European countries as well as in South Korea, serves as a universal interface between the smartphone or other personal devices and the car.

The new app carries over all the functionality of the previous app (like fuel level, navigation integration and location) but also adds the ability to lock and unlock doors. Service appointments can also be arranged very conveniently using the MINI App. Model-specific MINI Electric services are another component of the app. The charging process can also be controlled from a distance and – depending on the time of year – the auxiliary heating or auxiliary air conditioning of the MINI Cooper SE can be activated. By mid-2021, the MINI App will be available in more than 40 countries and 23 languages including the North American market.

2022 MINI refresh

Interior Design & Functionality Improvements

At first glance, the 2022 interior seems very similar to what came before it. However look again and the array of detail updates MINI has introduced become evident. Fewer joins and buttons give the cabin a more clean and modern feel. The clear cockpit layout with new multi-function steering wheel integrates more functions yet reduces the number of control surfaces. The digital instrument cluster on the steering column and iconic central instrument with all-new user interface   point the way into the brand’s digital age.

One feature that you can’t see is the use of 100% recycled material for the surfaces of the Light Checkered design sports seats

2022 MINI refresh

Improved Ambient Lighting

MINI has increased the amount of ambient lighting, adding a light strip in the dash (below the trim and above the belt-line) and in the doors. Additionally these lights respond to driving modes “Lounge” and “Sport” directly to further the concept of how those modes change not just the driving experience but the cabin environment as well.

2024 Mini Cooper Review: JCW Ticks All The Boxes For A Hot Hatch

If you’re looking for a hot hatch with high performance and motorsport heritage, there’s nothing quite like this one. On a racetrack, the 2024 Mini Cooper JCW can keep up with larger, more expensive, and more powerful cars.

The JCW badge on this car tells you exactly why this car is so fast. It stands for John Cooper Works and in this review article, we take a look at the design, performance, interior, technology, and more of the 2024 Mini 3-Door Hatch JCW.

The JCW Story

Before we talk about this car, let’s talk about JCW! John Cooper Works is the in-house tuning and racing division for Mini. JCW was started in 2002 by Michael Cooper, the son of John Cooper, a motorsport legend involved in several motorsport disciplines including Formula 1.

Mini Cooper JCW

The Mini Cooper was the performance version of the Mini hatchback, and it gained that name because it was John Cooper who developed the high-performance version. He even took the Mini Cooper racing and was quite successful at it. Read all about the history & generations of the Mini Cooper here . This is a name that brings motorsport heritage to the table and it’s quite visible on the 2024 Mini Cooper JCW.

Design & Styling

From the moment you lay eyes on the 2024 Mini Cooper JCW, it’s clear that this one’s all about performance. It retains the iconic silhouette that has made the Mini a recognizable and beloved car around the world. The front fascia features a more aggressive grille design with larger air inlets, which not only contribute to the car’s menacing look but also aid in cooling the engine. The signature circular headlights also feature LED DRLs.

Mini Cooper JCW

On the sides, the JCW’s flared wheel arches and side skirts emphasize its athletic stance. The red stripe on the grille and the stripes on the bonnet are exclusive to the JCW trim. It rides on sporty 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and the contrasting red colour on the mirrors and roof add to its sporty styling.

Mini Cooper JCW

At the rear, you’ll find a large spoiler, signature Union Jack detailing inside the tail lamps, and a sporty bumper with twin exhaust outlets. The Mini 3-door JCW ensures you’ll turn heads wherever you go.

Engine & Performance

Under the bonnet, the 2024 Mini Cooper JCW houses a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four engine , producing 228hp and 320Nm. This powerplant is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth and quick gear changes. For purists, there’s also a 6-speed manual gearbox , which enhances the driving engagement and connection with the car.

Mini Cooper JCW

The performance credentials of the JCW are impressive. The car can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds, making it one of the quickest in its segment. The top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

The JCW also features sporty suspension , Brembo brakes , and an electronic differential lock, all of which contribute to its agility. The steering is incredibly responsive, providing excellent feedback and making the car feel lively and eager in the corners.  Whether on twisty back roads or urban streets, the JCW delivers a thrilling driving experience with precise steering and minimal body roll.

Inside the 2024 JCW, its performance pedigree is immediately apparent. It isn’t the most spacious hatchback out there, instead, it prioritises sportiness. You get sporty bucket seats that keep you in place while cornering hard.  The cabin features high-quality materials, including leather upholstery with contrast stitching, carbon-fiber trim, and metal accents.

Mini Cooper JCW Interior

The circular pattern is quite evident across the cabin. From the controls on the steering wheel to the climate control knobs, AC vents, and the infotainment screen housing, everything follows a circular theme.

The rear seats are best suited for shorter journeys or smaller passengers, and the hatchback design offers decent cargo space. This really isn’t a hatchback for one to haul luggage around. However, if the need arises, the split folding rear seat makes way for more cargo if needed.

The 2024 Mini Cooper JCW is packed with modern technology aimed at enhancing both convenience and entertainment. The centrepiece of the infotainment system is an 8.8-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay, however, Android Auto isn’t available yet. The system also includes navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium Harman Kardon sound system that delivers crisp and clear audio.

Mini Cooper Tech

The JCW is also equipped with a host of driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and parking sensors. These technologies not only enhance safety but also reduce the stress of driving in congested urban environments.

Safety has always been a priority for Mini, and the 2024 JCW is no exception. In addition to the aforementioned driver assistance features , the JCW includes a robust suite of passive safety features. The car is built with a high-strength steel frame that provides excellent crash protection. It also comes with multiple airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags, to protect occupants in the event of a collision.

The 2024 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works is a testament to the brand’s ability to blend heritage with modern features and incredible performance. It retains the iconic design cues that have made the Mini a beloved car while incorporating cutting-edge technology and performance enhancements. The result is a car that is not only fun to drive but also practical and stylish.

Mini Cooper

With its powerful engine, agile handling, and upscale interior, the JCW is a standout in the hot hatch segment. It offers a driving experience that is both engaging and exhilarating, making it an excellent choice for enthusiasts. For those in search of a compact car with a big personality and the performance to back it up, the Mini Cooper JCW is hard to beat.

Mini Cooper Price In The UAE

The 2024 Mini Cooper JCW is positioned as a premium hot hatch, and its pricing reflects its high-performance capabilities and luxury features. While it is more expensive than the standard Mini Cooper models, the JCW justifies its price with its powerful engine, sophisticated suspension system, and upscale interior.

Prices for a new Mini Cooper for sale in the UAE range from AED 119,000 to 175,000. Prices for a used Mini Cooper for sale in the UAE range from AED 16,000 to AED 209,000 depending on the model year and condition of the vehicle. Want to buy one? 2024 Mini JCW 1to6 Edition Review: The Last Shift

Kyle Patrick

This is it. The end of the line.

This is the 2024 Mini John Cooper Works 1 To 6 Edition, a final hurrah for the manual transmission for the entire brand. To bid farewell to the third pedal, Mini has crafted a send-off from arguably its purest model: the three-door hatch, in hot JCW trim.

A future collector’s model? Undoubtedly. But here in 2024, the Mini’s sky-high price makes it a tough sell against some seriously accomplished machinery.

2024 Mini JCW 1to6 Edition Quick Take

The 2024 Mini JCW 1to6 is all about emotion. It’s still as riotously fun as ever, but there’s a cruel irony to making a final special edition dedicated to the manual: it highlights the deficiencies of the row-your-own setup.

What’s new for 2024:

The smallest Mini is still arguably the brand's most iconic model. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

Uh, not much, because basically the whole Mini family is new for 2025. Just last week, contributor Kunal D’souza drove the new three-door in Europe , in the now-more-powerful, all-electric SE form. The 1to6 Edition is the big news for the smallest Mini, limited to 999 units globally. Speccing this particular option package adds a smattering of badges outside and in to let folks know you splurged. The exterior can only be had in Midnight Black, with a patterned racing stripe running the length of the lil’ guy. Don’t forget the shift pattern sticker on the tail, the 1to6 roundel on the C-pillar, or the self-levelling wheel center caps on the black, 18-inch alloys. The cabin is much the same story, with badging marking this out as 1 of the 999.

After a brief absence, the manual transmission returned to a select number of Mini models last year. Here it hooks up to the most powerful engine available in the three-door: a 228-horsepower, 236-pound-feet turbocharged 2.0-liter. With a curb weight under 2,900 pounds (1,315 kilograms), the JCW is capable of sprinting to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.3 seconds.

Exterior style: any color, so long as...

Every 1to6 Edition comes in Midnight Black. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

It’s a Mini. You know what it looks like. Your aunt who doesn’t care about cars knows what it looks like, and so does your five-year-old nephew. The all-black treatment does sap some of the inherent fun of the shape, but on the flip-side, a Mini trying to be all mean and aggressive is its own kind of fun, right? Right. The red calipers and big rear wing signpost performance without shouting it. Long-term JCW styling cues, like the center-mount twin exhaust pipes and Union Jack taillights, still earn a nod of approval.

Powertrain and fuel economy: big power, small package

This is the last time we'll see this in a Mini. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

There is something innately fun about driving such a big-hearted car. The BMW-built 2.0-liter doesn’t just offer up plenty of power across the rev range, but it throws down its peak torque barely over idle. The result is a muscle car experience in a city car serving size, the JCW rocketing forward with authority. That pocket-sized footprint contributes to a surprisingly decent fuel efficiency rating too, though remember the JCW drinks premium. The auto will do 29 mpg (8.1 L/100 km) combined, and while the manual is rated lower at 26 mpg (9.0 L/100 km), I saw closer to the former after a week. Mini has found the 2.0's voice too: it isn't the smoothest, but there's an aggressive edge that suggests power without screaming it.

Oh yes, the manual, the 1to6’s entire raison d’être. The good news is that it’s a friendly one, with an easy clutch action and light, slightly-longish throws. Pedal placement makes heel-and-toe simple. There’s just so much isolation baked into that shifter. Rest your hand on it and there’s no real sense of a gearbox underneath, no fizz coming through. There is a numb rubberiness that can make it hard to find the right gear when on the attack. It’s a far cry from the steely precision of Honda boxes, and even the GR Corolla’s looser, laidback ‘box has more personality.

While the JCW’s muscle mostly masks it, the long ratios of this six-speed are still just that: too long.

Handling and drivability: party all the time

The go-kart comparisons aren't for nothing. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

Mini loves to draw go-kart comparisons for its hot hatches. It’s not without cause—although this hyperactive hot hatch is maybe more kart than some people will want.

The 1to6 earns big points for its engaging optimism and mid-corner adjustability. The light curbweight and square stance give it a flickability you’ll struggle to match in most anything else front-drive. This is an eager puppy of a car, and every sweeper the next bone. The small-diameter steering wheel gives good feedback while keeping the weighting natural and consistent from lock to lock. There’s plenty of grip from the front axle, even if those 18-inch wheels wear modest 205-section rubber.

With a boxy shape and low nose, the Mini is just as easy as ever to place on the road. Whether it’s your favorite scenic road or the bustle of downtown traffic, the JCW builds confidence.

Ride quality and comfort: harshing the vibe

We hope you have a good chiropractor on call. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

The flip-side to the fun is a punishing ride quality. Yes, even with an adaptive suspension, the Mini crashes over potholes and shakes its way over uneven surfaces. When Mini makes all those kart comparisons, this is probably not what it means.

At least the seats, done up in a combo of suede and leather, are up to the task. The Mini’s front thrones are grippy and supportive, keeping folks in place without feeling restrictive. That every adjustment is manual is a little shocking at this price, mind you.

Interior style and quality: showing its age

The 2024 Mini cabin still looks good, but material quality lets it down. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

Driving the 1to6 after spending some time in the new Minis did not do it any favors. There’s a lot of plain black plastic in here, enough to earn a comment from a passenger—one who doesn’t even drive. Yeah yeah, the JCW is all about sober performance, so a monochrome cabin is the point (as I witnessed in the new JCW Countryman). The issue is that the cabin quality doesn’t align with the price. Brittle plastics line the doors and center console. There’s also nowhere to easily store a modern, larger phone.

Rant over, there are still redeeming qualities of the current Mini three-door cabin. The rotary dials for the climate controls are fool-proof, and the series of switches below them for various functions remain a tactile delight. The steering wheel is the right size and oh-so-soft. I much prefer the lozenge-style instrument cluster over the wheel than the absence of any such setup in the new car. The only real issue it has is legibility during late (or early) hours due to glare.

Tech and safety:

The instrument panel is susceptible to glare. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

Mini’s insistence on a round infotainment screen has its foibles, but once you get to grips with this older version of the system, it’s easy to flit around and find what’s needed. Having a small rotary dial to control it keeps distraction to a minimum, though I will never understand why Mini reverses its directions compared to BMWs. Rotate clockwise to move up a menu? Madness. Wireless Apple CarPlay is included.

This generation of Mini does not go big on driver assistance features. Automated emergency braking, a mandated backup camera, and adaptive cruise control are the noteworthy inclusions; blind spot monitoring and lane-keep assist are not available.

Value, dollars, and sense: big money

There are 1to6 badges spotting the JCW inside and out. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

The 1to6 Edition pushes the smallest Mini’s price tag up to shocking heights. A regular John Cooper Works will set you back $36,395 ($41,876 CAD) including destination. In America, to get the 1to6 Edition means opting for the top Iconic trim as well, so all-in we’re talking $46,295.

Canada is even more shocking: The Premier+ Line 2.0 options package plus 1to6 adds $17,200 CAD. Throw in the optioned alarm system and the total is $59,576 CAD.

That eclipses the Civic Type R (and its fancier Integra Type S sibling). Same with GR Corolla. Staying within the family, that’s up there with the 312-horsepower ’25 Countryman JCW, and right between a BMW 230i and M240i. Oof.

Final thoughts: 2024 Mini JCW 1to6 Edition Review

The family DNA has stayed strong at Mini for over two decades. Image credit: Kyle Patrick

Is it sad that Mini is abandoning the manual transmission? Yes. Few brands have fun baked into their very DNA quite like Mini, and part of that fun is being involved in what’s going on. In that sense, the 2024 Mini JCW 1to6 Edition succeeds.

But it’s also sad that this was the best manual Mini could muster. This three-pedal setup isn’t as satisfying as others in the hot hatch segment. Paired with the too-harsh ride, the 1to6 Edition is a fun but flawed machine. It will become a collector's car, not only as a monument to what enthusiasts had, but what could have been.

I tried adaptive cruise control on these EVs — and it changed the way I drive

Drivers may be surprised trying it out for the first time

Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE RWD (2024).

Three EVs and one PHEV in, there’s one feature I’ve been constantly leaning on my quest to drive the best electric cars around. It’s adaptive cruise control (ACC), which is also commonly referred to as dynamic cruise control and smart cruise control depending on the car maker. They all basically follow the premise of maintaining your vehicle’s speed while driving, but with the ability to steer the wheel for you as well so that you stay centered in your lane.

I can’t tell you how it’s the single thing that’s changing my habits, which I explained in detail when I test drove the Lexus TX550H+ and let it take over the wheel for me . This feature isn’t just exclusive to EVs because it’s been in many gas-powered vehicles and hybrids for a long while now, leveraging different technologies, such as LiDAR, sonar, radar, and even the cameras around the car.

For those still driving much older vehicles, say 10+ years old, they could find the experience of using adaptive cruise control a bit jarring when they upgrade — which could dissuade them from using it entirely. After driving multiple EVs with adaptive cruise control, I realize it serves its purpose more often than not. Here’s when you should and shouldn’t use it.

Perfect for highways

Cruise control has always been a driver’s best friend for those long trips on highways. Adaptive cruise control makes it even better because today’s vehicles can intelligently identify other moving vehicles — especially the one right in front of you.

When I test drove the Hyundai Ioniq 6 for a week , I was impressed by its ability to distance itself from the car in front of me while driving the speed limit on highways. When it senses it’s getting too close to the vehicle in front of me, or when an adjacent vehicle enters my lane, the Ioniq 6’s adaptive cruise control system automatically applies the appropriate amount of braking.

Even when the highway’s making a bend further up in the road, the Ioniq 6’s driver assist mode moves the steering wheel accordingly for me — all while maintaining my lane and speed.

Even great when switching lanes

@tomsguide ♬ Lofi Vibes - Gentle State

Taking things to the next level, I was astounded by the lane change assist feature while test driving the Kia EV9. My colleague Kate Kozuch also tried this helpful driving feature out when she test drove the Mustang Mach-E GT very recently, which performed a lane change on its own thanks to Ford’s BlueCruise self-driving technology .

I tried out a similar lane changing assist feature with the Kia EV9 , and when paired with adaptive cruise control, I’m impressed by how it makes driving even easier (and safer too). Again, I think it works well on highways when you want to change lanes because adaptive cruise control continues to maintain the car’s speed — while also detecting other vehicles while it’s making a lane change.

Less burden with congestion driving

Kia EV9

During my commute back home from New York City, congestion on the roads eventually brought traffic on the highway to its usual stop-and-go flow. With adaptive cruise control and driver assist enabled on the Kia EV9, it’s the perfect pairing for congestion driving on the highway.

That’s because the EV9’s able to apply the appropriate amount of braking and acceleration to keep its distance with the vehicle in front of me. Gridlock traffic is already a burden for all drivers on the road, but I love how this makes it less of a hassle. Even when the vehicle in front of me comes to a complete stop, adaptive cruise control automatically gets the vehicle moving once it clears up.

Although, I always kept my foot lighting over the brake because you just never know . I recommend that you do the same when using adaptive cruise control because it's the fail-safe method to instantly give back complete control of your vehicle.

Tough on local roads with faint lines

chevy bolt electric car

Now, one of the times I found it challenging to use adaptive cruise control was on city streets with faintly painted lines on the road. That’s because both the Ioniq 6 and EV9 struggled to keep their respective driver assist modes on to keep me centered in the lane. I’m able to recognize this because the dashboard display would normally show green lines alongside the car to indicate that it can stay centered in the lane.

Of course, it would go green whenever it can reestablish those lines on the road, but I wouldn’t lean on adaptive cruise control a whole lot when they’re indistinct.

Winding roads are troublesome

a still from the Road 96 Steam trailer

And finally, I would absolutely tell you to disengage adaptive cruise control on those long, winding roads that have you hitting steep inclines and tight turns. One of the challenges I encountered while driving with it on winding roads is that it wants to maintain the vehicle’s rate.

Naturally, this works wonderfully on straightaways and such, but it’s jarring when it encounters an incline because adaptive cruise control lacks human perception to anticipate road changes. For example, I found adaptive cruise control accelerating a little after going up a hill to maintain its speed — rather than anticipating the incline and accelerating beforehand to help sustain the vehicle’s momentum.

Furthermore, tight turns are nearly impossible for adaptive cruise control because it doesn’t adjust the vehicle’s speed ahead of time. It’s jarring when it’s cruising at 35 mph and wants to take a bend in the road at the same speed, rather than dialing down as the speed limit sign suggests.

While it’s not perfect for all driving conditions, I still find more benefits with using adaptive cruise control. Even though some parts of the technology help to propel fully automated vehicles, I need to remind everyone using this that it’s still an assistive feature — so it’s not meant to replace you entirely as the driver.
