Mitski’s melbourne show showed why she is music’s most devoted maverick.

Supported by Moaning Lisa, this performance was captivating to say the least.

Artists rarely plan for adoration. Personal songwriting often inspires it, but if that were a guaranteed path to devotion, folkstars would still exist.

Japanese-American singer-songwriter Mitski Miyawaki, known mononymously as Mitski , has cultivated a devout following with an ever-changing frame of vulnerability and zany garage rock.

People adore Mitski – before doors opened, a line longer than any seen at The Corner Hotel in recent years snaked down the side alley. Charlie Versegi, bass-vocalist of Moaning Lisa , articulated the fandom best when she regarded it as an attitude.

“She taught me you could be emotional, hysterical and female and still be successful in the music business,” she said in dedication, before the band played ‘Carrie (I Want a Girl)’.

The crowd was more giddy than rowdy, with plenty of gushing over Mitski’s 2018 opus Be the Cowboy . The record launched her into the critical stratosphere and is her greatest pivot to the left yet, experimenting with narrative and a variety of musical guises such as disco, country, funk and R&B.

Canberra’s Moaning Lisa were well placed in the support slot, playing to a near full room. Their neo-riot grrrl pop is a rising star in the Australian scene, and they shared more than a passing influence with Mitski’s garage-rock beginnings.

A Charles Mingus tune and Euro-pop brought Mitski onstage, perhaps a deliberate reminder of the musical pedigree that brought her before us. A degree in studio composition gave her classical training but it also imbued her music with diverse stylistic control (briefly she was the vocalist for a progressive metal band).

Her current band arrangement is a guitarist with a four-foot wide pedal board, drummer, bassist/synth pad operator and keyboardist. They played with the adroit detachment of session musicians.

The static spotlight ensured Mitski as vocalist, now unencumbered with a guitar, as the sole focus from the outset.

Mitski began with ‘Remember My Name’, though her vocals didn’t quite arrive with her. It wasn’t until the shrill fuzz of ‘I Don’t Smoke’ that her dynamic voice burst through the mix. Beginning almost motionless, Mitski tightly choreographed actions to every song, bursting with energy both delicate and fretful.

The emotional frustration of ‘Francis Forever’ built up to an uncontainable level, as she paced back and forth across the front of the stage for two and a half minutes straight.

Mitski curled the eight-bit crunch of ‘Washing Machine Heart’ gracefully into what resembled emotional Tai Chi. It channelled Father John Misty’s Jim Morrison-esque parody, with greater intent.

Every song felt like a scene in a piece of micro-theatre, both transfixing the audience and guarding her identity. That is, of course, until she hilariously broke the fourth wall by sharing a conundrum she and the band had discussed backstage: ‘‘What’s worse, vomit or diarrhoea?’’

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only interruption; a bunch of overactive flash-cameras forced Mitski to ask people to stop.

Mitski’s last four records fitted seamlessly into the set list, creating something of a narrative in her personal and musical development.

‘Happy’ was the Puberty 2 highlight of the night, the band’s arrangement tending to an almost carnival twee. Her two greatest works of pop craftsmanship to date were punched into the setlist three-quarters of the way through.

‘Townie’ had a more thrashy edge to its cry of defiance than the recorded version. The intensity of the singalong made an impression on Mitski, who let out a laugh before the hi-hat roll of ‘Nobody’ began.

Live, the ode to loneliness gained a surreal power from an 800-strong crowd singing along in sheer joy.

The teen-movie shattering balladry of ‘Two Slow Dancers’ was the traditional start to the encore (hindered slightly in gravitas by a faulty sampler) though it was ‘Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart’ that formed the perfect oddball gift to an evidently devoted Melbourne audience – a bounding, misshapen guitar yodel from Retired from Sad, New Career in Business .

Mitski is a true maverick; if anyone is worthy of devotion, it’s her.

Highlight: ‘Francis Forever’.

Lowlight: Dickheads with flash cameras. Why?

Quite literally worth every cent of my money and moment of my time. Venue was very easy to get into, suprisingly well air-conditioned even with the close quarters of the crowd, and Mitski was simply phenomenal. The storytelling presented through the songs and her interpretive performance, especially with how often she was moving around the stage or on the tables, was mind blowing and made it easy to see her despite the countless other individuals in front me. Plus the band livr gave such a good sound to her already stunning discography, I suggest seeing her if you get the chance!

She is truly stunning. Her voice is crazy beautiful live and recorded, and her expressions on stage are beautiful. Such a well done show, would see her again in a heartbeat. Her openers The Overcoats were also stunning. They created so much energy with their set; I would also see them again.

Mitski Announces North American Acoustic Shows

In support of her new album, The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We

Mitski has announced a string of intimate North American acoustic shows in support of her upcoming album, The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We .

Dubbed “Amateur Mistake,” the tour includes performances in Mexico City, Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto throughout the month of September. Come October, Mitski will play previously announced shows in the UK and Europe. Check out her updated tour schedule below.

Tickets for the LA, NYC, and Toronto shows will be distributed via lottery beginning Wednesday, September 13th (fans can register here ). Meanwhile, tickets for the Mexico City show are currently on sale.

In addition to her upcoming tour dates, on September 7th Mitski will host a series of music and film double features that’ll take place at movie theaters in Chicago, Dallas, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Nashville, Sydney, New York, and Tokyo. At each event, fans will get to hear The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We in its entirety, followed by a screening of a film selected by Mitski. More information can be found here .

The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We , Mitski’s seventh album to date, arrives on September 15th via Dead Oceans. It’s described as her “most American album,” pulling from a vast pool of influences, including spaghetti western soundtracks, Arthur Russell, Igor Stravinsky, and more. The lead single, “Bug Like an Angel,” was named Consequence ’s Song of the Week .

Mitski Releases New Single ‘Working For the Knife’ And Announces Return To Touring

Mitski is back with the new single ‘Working for the Knife’. It’s the US indie rocker’s first official new single since her 2018 album,  Be the Cowboy .

Mitski followed  Be the Cowboy  with a couple of soundtrack contributions. In January 2020, she supplied ‘ Cop Car ’ for the soundtrack to the horror film,  The Turning . In March 2021, Mitski released  ‘The Baddy Man’ from the soundtrack to the graphic novel,  This Is Where We Fall .

In 2019, there was speculation that Mitski had quit music. In announcing a show at New York City’s Central Park in September of that year, Mitski posted to Twitter that “This will be my last show indefinitely, and I’m glad it’s ending in NY where I came up.” She continued: “It’s time to be a human again. And have a place to live.”

The internet turned itself inside out trying to discern if this was a retirement announcement, but Mitski quickly confirmed it wasn’t the end, just a much-needed break. “I’ve been on non-stop tour for over 5 years,” she wrote. “I haven’t had a place to live during this time, & I sense that if I don’t step away soon, my self-worth/identity will start depending too much on staying in the game.”

In conjunction with ‘Working for the Knife’, Mitski has announced her first tour since 2019. Between February and May 2022, she’ll mark a comprehensive trail across the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and Western Europe.

Mitski Is Bringing Her New Album ‘The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We’ On A 2024 North American Tour

“ My Love Mine All Mine ” musician Mitski is bringing her new album, The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We , on a 2024 North American tour. After treating fans to a host of film screenings and private project listening parties , they will get the chance to experience the music the way Mitski intended.

The 19-show run will kick off on January 26, 2024, in Miami, Florida. Tamino, Sunny War, Julia Jacklin, and Sarah Kinsley will join Mitski on the road as opening support on respective dates. The tour will make a few international stops in Toronto and Mexico City.

Fresh out of a pandemic, Australia’s 2023 touring calendar was one of the busiest in recent memory, as artists of all stripes took centrestage everywhere from stadium shows to intimate local gigs. With a starry schedule that included the likes of Post Malone , Red Hot Chili Peppers , and Mötley Crüe , it’ll be tricky for 2024’s schedule to outdo its predecessor – and yet, thanks to the likes of Taylor Swift , Blink-182 and Pink , plus Coldplay, Pearl Jam and SZA, it’s poised to do just that.

The legendary Nick Cave embarks on a solo tour of Australia (read: without the Bad Seeds) this April and May. Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood will be on bass duties for these shows, most of which are sold out.

Groovin The Moo sideshows When: April 29 – May 11 Find tickets and more info

Sadly, Groovin The Moo is no longer going ahead this year – but many of the artists who would have played the touring festival will still be forging ahead with their own Australian headline shows. Singer-songwriter Claire Rosinkranz, Wu-Tang Clan legend GZA (performing a set dubbed ‘Liquid Swords Live’) and Stephen Sanchez will all perform headline shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

UK prog metal outfit Tesseract are set to make the highly anticipated return to Australia in May 2024, marking their first shows Down Under since 2018. Between May 2 and May 9, the band will perform in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

With 2023 album ‘War of Being’ and songs from 2021’s ‘Portals’ not played in Australia yet, Tesseract are set to bring with them a fresh bounty of new music to Australia.

Melissa Etheridge is bringing her trailblazing heartland rock to Australian shores for the first time in five years in May 2024. The ‘I’m Not Broken’ tour kicks off in Perth on May 10, before heading through Adelaide, Melbourne and finishing up in Sydney on May 17. Cult-favourite mathcore/hardcore/metal band Botch from Tacoma, Washington reunited last year more than two decades after their split – and now they’re embarking on their first-ever Aussie tour. The jaunt will include two dates in Melbourne and Sydney apiece as well as shows in Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.

Guitarist David Knudson has promised Botch will go all out: “We don’t want to half-ass it…we want to be fucking tight as we ever were, if not tighter. We don’t want to disappoint a fan that’s never seen us live. So you know, it’s all in or nothing.”

Peter Hook , the legendary bassist and co-founder of Joy Division and New Order is set to return to Australia in May 2024, just two years after his last tour of the country in 2022. Scottish indie rockers The Snuts will return for their second Australian tour in as many years, following their debut run of headline shows in 2023. Passenger’s first Australian tour in six years also serves as a celebration of his 2012 album ‘All The Little Lights’, which received an anniversary edition last year. This jaunt will feature Josh Pyke as supporting act and, notably, two shows at the Sydney Opera House (one of which is already sold out).

If you look at the pop charts for any given week in the 1980s, chances are Kim Wilde was on it. The ‘Kids in America’ singer is still performing, on a break from her new life as a gardener, and will play a whirlwind Australian tour this October. Wilde will begin in Brisbane on October 17, before heading through Tweed Heads, Sydney, Wollongong, Perth, Adelaide and finishing in Melbourne October 26.

The Buzzcocks , progenitors of “love punk” and pop punk before it even existed, are still going strong almost 50 years after their formation. With Steve Diggle on vocals, replacing the late Pete Shelley, the band will return to Australia for seven shows in late October to early November. The Buzzcocks will begin on the Gold Coast on October 24, before travelling through Brisbane, Adelaide, Fremantle, Newcastle, Sydney and finishing in Melbourne on November 2.

PinkPantheress was once an anonymous beatmaker going viral on TikTok – she’s anything but anonymous now, as she comes to Australia for the first time promoting her debut album ‘Heaven’. Between opening for Coldplay , the 22-year-old Brit will headline shows at Melbourne’s Festival Hall (October 29) and Horden Pavilion in Sydney on November 5.

Coldplay will bring their ‘Music of the Spheres’ tour to Australia’s east coast at the end of a more than two-year stretch. The pop juggernauts have already sold 9 million tickets – the most for any tour in history – and are set to play eight stadium shows in Melbourne and Sydney after playing in Perth in 2023.

Irish singer-songwriter Hozier will tour Down Under for the first time since 2019 this November, supporting his 2023 album ‘Unreal Unearth’ with a nation-wide arena sojourn. Aussie Depeche Mode fans are an incredibly patient bunch. The last time the British synth-pop titans toured the country was in 1994, meaning nearly three decades have passed since they last paid us a visit. But good things come to those who wait, and it seems there is a glimmer of hope for those hoping to catch the band Down Under.

In March 2023, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan told an Italian blog that the band were eyeing “as-yet-unannounced dates in Asia and Australia” as part of a touring run that would lead into 2024. The band have toured the world in support of their latest album, ‘Memento Mori’ , and a trip to Australia to cap off the jaunt seems more likely than ever.

Just a Few of the Biggest Concert Tours of 2024, from Olivia Rodrigo to Bad Bunny

Listening to your favorite musician at home is fun, but there's nothing quite like the experience of singing along with them, and tons of more fans, live. And as luck would have it, 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for some of the world's top musical acts, so chances are your favorite performer might be stopping at a city near you soon.

Ahead, we rounded up some of the biggest concert tours of 2024, ranging from Taylor Swift's mega-popular Eras Tour to Drake and J. Cole's exciting It's All A Blur Tour - Big as the What?—set to kick off this winter. You can also expect tour dates from classic icons like Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and more.

1) Taylor Swift

Undoubtedly one of the biggest concert tours ever, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will continue right through 2024. The international leg of the tour kicked off in Japan, where she played four shows in Tokyo. She'll also stop in Melbourne, Singapore, Paris, Madrid, London, Milan, and more before returning to the States to play in the fall.

There's nothing like seeing T. Swift IRL, but don't fret if you're unable to nab tickets—the Eras Tour movie is now available to stream from the comfort of your home.

2) Olivia Rodrigo

This is not a drill—"Drivers License" singer Olivia Rodrigo will be hitting the road on tour starting at the end of February. The Guts World Tour runs from February through mid-August and has dates in Nashville, Toronto, Chicago, and New York City, among others. Even cooler? Rodrigo will have a stacked list of special guests—like PinkPantheress, Remi Wolf, The Breeders, and Chappell Roan—with her.

3) Red Hot Chili Peppers

Did you hear the good news? The Red Hot Chili Peppers have extended their global tour through summer 2024. The buzzy stadium tour, which kicked off in June 2022, will now run until July 2024 and bring the California-based band to places like Los Angeles, Tampa, Toronto, and Salt Lake City.

4) Bad Bunny

It's fitting that "Monaco" rapper Bad Bunny titled his tour Most Wanted —it's slated to be one of the year's hottest tours. Planned to help promote his latest studio album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana , Most Wanted will kick off in Salt Lake City on February 21 and run through May 26.

5) Billy Joel

If you haven't yet seen Billy Joel perform live, there's still time! The Piano Man has added more tour dates to his schedule, stopping in cities like Tampa, New York, Denver, and St. Louis this year. Even more exciting? He'll share the stage with fellow iconic performers Sting and Stevie Nicks for some of these dates.

Mitski recently announced that she's expanding her North American tour dates , and we couldn't be more excited. The months-long tour, which supports her 2023 studio album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has a long list of stops, including Miami Beach, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Paris.

There's nothing quite like a Madonna concert, that's for sure. The singer's Celebration Tour , which started last October, continues straight through the spring with dates in Seattle, San Francisco, Mexico City, and more. Besides her eye-catching sets, chart-topping songs, and impressive choreography, concertgoers also get a glimpse of the performer's fantastic costumes, which include looks from Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier.

8) Bleachers

The New Jersey-founded rock band, which is fronted by Jack Antonoff—known for producing albums for top acts like Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey—not only has announced a new album but a new tour , too. The tour will start in the UK in March, ending fittingly in the band's home state of New Jersey in mid-June. 9) Nicki Minaj

Nicki fans rejoice: the rapper and singer might be coming to a city near you soon as part of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. The massive tour will include performances in Brooklyn, Oakland, and Baltimore, with stops at Dreamville Festival and Rolling Loud California along the way.

10) Blink 182

Live out all of your nineties and early aughts pop-punk dreams with one of Blink 182's One More Time Tour dates. The tour, which supports the band's ninth studio album, One More Time..., will bring the trio to cities all over the globe, including Sydney, Santiago, Portland, and Boston. The tour's supporting act is Pierce the Veil, which is also worth checking out.

11) Stevie Nicks

The oh-so-magical Stevie Nicks continues her touring streak with a bunch of 2024 concert dates . Set to begin in Atlantic City, NJ on February 10, Nicks will visit a dozen cities throughout the U.S. this year, such as New Orleans, Omaha, and Chicago. "Let's keep this party going in 2024," the singer-songwriter posted on her Instagram in September to announce the newly added tour dates.

12) The 1975

The 1975 is showing no signs of slowing down. The British band, famous for hits like "Somebody Else" and "Robbers," has extended their 2023 tour through 2024. Titled Still...At Their Very Best , the 22-date tour will open in Glasgow on February 8 and conclude in Amsterdam on March 24.

13) Drake and J. Cole

Rap greats Drake and J. Cole come together for the It's All a Blur Tour – Big As the What? which is guaranteed to be a good time. Drake, fresh off his 2023 It's All a Blur tour with 21 Savage, is set to hit dozens of cities starting in February, many of which J. Cole will also be in tow for. Scoop up tickets ASAP, as Drake's shows are known to sell out.

14) Janet Jackson

Superstar Janet Jackson is also extending her 2023 tour, Together Again , into 2024 with dates in Anaheim, Austin, New Orleans, and Hartford. Even cooler? Jackson's supporting act is the 2000s southern rap legend Nelly.

15) Rolling Stones

If you've ever dreamed of seeing the Rolling Stones perform live in person, now's your chance. The iconic rockers, who released their studio album Hackney Diamonds this past fall, are returning on the road for a 16-date tour with shows throughout the United States and Canada. Concertgoers can expect a mix of new tunes and Stones classics.

16) Bruce Springsteen

Famous for countless listenable hits like "Born to Run" and "Glory Days," Bruce Springsteen is set to embark on a massive world tour this year with his band, The E Street Band. The much-anticipated tour will take the Boss and his crew to cities such as Phoenix, San Diego, Dublin, and Madrid, from March through November.

17) John Mayer

Be sure to catch John Mayer's solo tour this year, which will bring the guitarist and crooner to cities throughout Europe. This leg, an extension of his popular 2023 solo tour, will kick off in Stockholm on March 13 and finish in Dublin on March 29.

18) Shania Twain

Okay, this one is technically a residency , but we're excited nonetheless. Shania Twain, most known for her incredible outfits (her hooded leopard print look, anyone?) and hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" is setting up shop in Vegas starting May 10. Twain's residency will take place at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood on and off throughout December 2024.

All good things must come to an end. The Eagles, known for "Hotel California" and other amazing rock songs, began their final concert tour this winter. It launched in Phoenix on January 20, with March 16 as its last date in the United States. Eagles fans won't want to miss this one.

20) Alanis Morisette: The Triple Moon Tour

Alanis Morisette joins forces with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for their 2024 Triple Moon Tour , which has dates in North America and Canada. This tour is a great one to catch this summer, as it's slated to run from June through August.
